Chapek, Walt Disney chief executive, has rejected calls by activist investor Dan Loeb to sell or spin off the ESPN sports television network, vowing to restore the business to its onetime status as a growth engine of the company.Loeb, whose Third Point hedge fund revealed in August that it had bought a $1bn stake in the company, called for ESPN to be spun off to reduce Disney’s debtload — just one element of a sweeping plan to shake up the media company. In an interview with the FT, Chapek said Disney had been “deluged” with interest from companies seeking to buy ESPN earlier this year amid rumours that the company was weighing a sale of the cable network.“If everyone wants to come in and buy it or spin it with us, I think that says something about its potential,” Chapek said. “I think its potential is within the Disney company.”ESPN broadcasts live sports in the US, including games of the National Football League, National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball.“We have a plan for it that will restore ESPN to its growth trajectory,” Chapek said. “When the rest of the world knows what our plans are they will be as confident about that proposition as we are.”Bob Chapek speaks at the 2022 Disney Legends Awards during Disney’s D23 Expo on Saturday © REUTERSChapek said he has “regular conversations” with Loeb, who also took a stake in Disney in 2020 that he sold early this year. He characterised the conversations as “very collaborative, non-antagonistic and collegial”, including around Loeb’s recommendations to change the composition of the Disney board. He defended the board, saying that the average tenure is four years and has a broad “range of skillsets”.But he added: “We’re so consistent with Dan’s thinking that everything he’s talked about are either things we have considered in the past or are considering for the future.”Loeb has also called on Disney to purchase Comcast’s 33 per cent stake in the Hulu streaming service earlier than January 2024, when Disney has the option to purchase the remaining stake. Some analysts on Wall Street are also calling for Disney to settle the Hulu ownership soon.Chapek said he would “love” to settle the matter sooner but that Comcast has seemed reluctant.“We have talked to them numerous times over the past year-plus,” he said. “If that were in the cards we would love to do that, but it takes two to tango.” He noted that market sentiment has changed significantly since the agreement was struck, when investors were more bullish on streaming.Chapek spoke on the sidelines of the annual D23 conference in Anaheim, California, where the company revealed its streaming and theatrical slate to thousands of Disney fans. Disney showed off trailers of two highly anticipated films coming this autumn, the Black Panther sequel Wakanda Forever and Avatar: The Way of Water. It also previewed a run of original series on Disney Plus, including the Star Wars prequel Andor and the Marvel series Secret Invasion.Chapek said the autumn slate represented the end of a Covid-induced production bottleneck. “This is our new steady state (of production),” he said, saying that both the pace of production and the size of its content budget — currently about $30bn — would remain level.Disney has continued to add new customers to its streaming services this year, and by some measures its overall streaming operations have surpassed Netflix in subscribers. But Netflix’s revelation that it has lost more than 1mn subscribers this year has cast a pall over the entire streaming business, with investors growing concerned over high content spending and clamouring for a clear path to profitability.Disney’s theme park business is also recovering strongly despite the closure of parks in China, analysts said. But shares are down 26.5 per cent this year, compared to a decline of 15.2 per cent for the S&P 500.Chapek said Disney has “commercial momentum that is enviable” both in its content and theme parks businesses, but was suffering from investor “malaise” around streaming due to Netflix’s problems.“For a long time we benefited from being just like Netflix because we were a streaming company,” he said. “It’s not unexpected that we would get painted with the same brush [but] we’re not the same company.”","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"DIS":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1541,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9077716554,"gmtCreate":1658580424478,"gmtModify":1676536178844,"author":{"id":"3578208726596445","authorId":"3578208726596445","name":"tbp","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6a3a91ebceb5224e3c4a05d72721b9a8","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3578208726596445","idStr":"3578208726596445"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$First Trust Global Wind Energy ETF(FAN)$nice","listText":"$First Trust Global Wind Energy ETF(FAN)$nice","text":"$First Trust Global Wind Energy ETF(FAN)$nice","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/3c71fe46624ce6523f41f19b3cecb7ff","width":"1080","height":"2191"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9077716554","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1569,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9077716684,"gmtCreate":1658580413048,"gmtModify":1676536178844,"author":{"id":"3578208726596445","authorId":"3578208726596445","name":"tbp","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6a3a91ebceb5224e3c4a05d72721b9a8","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3578208726596445","idStr":"3578208726596445"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Neurocrine Biosciences(NBIX)$wew","listText":"$Neurocrine Biosciences(NBIX)$wew","text":"$Neurocrine Biosciences(NBIX)$wew","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/3eece0586bbe0f76ba9ffb567dd416c1","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9077716684","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1492,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9077716900,"gmtCreate":1658580375235,"gmtModify":1676536178836,"author":{"id":"3578208726596445","authorId":"3578208726596445","name":"tbp","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6a3a91ebceb5224e3c4a05d72721b9a8","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3578208726596445","idStr":"3578208726596445"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like pls","listText":"Like pls","text":"Like pls","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9077716900","repostId":"2253066929","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2253066929","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1658542584,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2253066929?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-07-23 10:16","market":"us","language":"en","title":"The 2 Safest Energy Dividends Right Now","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2253066929","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"These passive income stalwarts will let investors rest easy no matter what the market is doing.","content":"
\n
The energy industry had some of the hottest stocks on the market over the past two years, but with fears of a recession potentially dampening demand for oil and gas, the S&P 500 Energy index is down ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; But upstream, midstream, and downstream energy stocks are still taking a beating. That makes it a critical time to consider where you've been putting your money to work and whether you should be investing in dividend stocks to protect your downside. History shows income-generating stocks outperform non-dividend stocks even in the worst of times, so if we're heading into a new period of market turbulence, it may be the right time to find companies that pay a safe dividend and can pad your pockets during this uncertainty.Chevron and Enterprise Products Partners offer two of the most dependable dividends in the energy sector right now.Chevron As one of the biggest integrated energy companies, Chevron stands to benefit from the global need for fossil fuels that will last for years, decades even. Despite alternative fuel sources filling an increasing percentage of our energy needs, there isn't the capacity available for wind, solar, or biofuels to displace oil and gas as our primary providers.Even though oil's price has dropped from its highs, it remains elevated and will likely stay elevated for some time to come. Chevron has told investors that even if oil drops to $50 a barrel -- what it deems its break-even price -- it would be able to maintain its record-setting stock buyback rate of $10 billion annually plus finance its dividend without worry, while a price of $75 a barrel would allow for further increases in both.It also noted that during the depths of the pandemic lockdown with oil averaging $30 a barrel (there was a point where the price even went negative), Chevron maintained its payout while still investing in its business even as many of its rivals suspended their dividends. The oil giant has a record of increasing its dividend for 35 consecutive years, most recently in January when it hiked the quarterly payout 6% to $1.42 per share, or $5.68 annually. With a healthy yield of 4.1% annually, Chevron is a Dividend Aristocrat, and its payout remains one of the industry's safest.Enterprise Products PartnersUnlike Chevron having its hand in all aspects of the oil and gas supply chain, Enterprise Products Partners specializes in the midstream channel, owning one of the largest pipeline networks in the U.S. with over 50,000 miles of pipeline, 14 billion cubic feet of natural gas storage, and 260 million barrels of storage capacity for natural gas liquids (NGLs), crude oil, refined products, and petrochemicals. It also has 21 NGL processing plants.Enterprise Products Partners is also one of the largest publicly traded partnerships in the country. As the middleman in the process, it thrives because it has a stable stream of revenue and predictable cash flows. Much of its revenue is derived from long-term, fixed-fee, or take-or-pay contracts that mean it gets paid whether its customers accept delivery of the product or not.Although the midstream player doesn't yet have the same longevity as Chevron in raising its dividend, at 23 consecutive years and counting, it is fast closing in on the 25-year threshold needed to become a Dividend Aristocrat. It's also a very safe dividend as its distribution-coverage ratio, or the amount of cash flow available for distribution compared to what the company disburses to its shareholders, of 1.8. The ratio should not fall below 1 as that implies the payout is unsustainable. But even during the pandemic, Enterprise's distribution-coverage ratio never got close to 1 and ended the year at 1.6.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"CVX":0.9,"EPD":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1929,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9074918431,"gmtCreate":1658281747223,"gmtModify":1676536134161,"author":{"id":"3578208726596445","authorId":"3578208726596445","name":"tbp","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6a3a91ebceb5224e3c4a05d72721b9a8","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3578208726596445","idStr":"3578208726596445"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Neurocrine Biosciences(NBIX)$ooo","listText":"$Neurocrine Biosciences(NBIX)$ooo","text":"$Neurocrine Biosciences(NBIX)$ooo","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/8ff0abc376a269d794a6ae3cd917d699","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9074918431","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1140,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9074911526,"gmtCreate":1658281675665,"gmtModify":1676536134119,"author":{"id":"3578208726596445","authorId":"3578208726596445","name":"tbp","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6a3a91ebceb5224e3c4a05d72721b9a8","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"3578208726596445","idStr":"3578208726596445"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like pls","listText":"Like pls","text":"Like pls","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9074911526","repostId":"1110268821","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1110268821","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1658278927,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1110268821?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-07-20 09:02","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Apple: Music Needs To Be Louder","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1110268821","media":"Seeking Alpha","summary":"SummaryThe last report by MIDiA research estimated that Apple Music has a market share of 15% in the","content":"

Summary

The last report by MIDiA research estimated that Apple Music has a market share of 15% in the subscription-based music streaming industry.

Amazon is quickly catching up with Apple and has a market share of 13%.

Google is also showing strong progress with a very high growth rate and has over 8% market share in this segment.

Apple needs a strong music streaming service that it can use as a must-have anchor service to sell other subscriptions.

The big chunk of future service segment growth will depend on how much growth and market share Apple is able to maintain within this segment.

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is facing challenges from Amazon (AMZN) and Google (GOOG) within the music streaming industry. Amazon last reported Music Unlimited subscriber number at 55 million in early 2020.

Google has been the biggest surprise within the streaming music industry. It reported over 50 million paid subscribers in Premium and Music subscription which is slightly behind Apple Music's last announcement of paid subscriber numbers. YouTube has a massive user base and it is trying to promote the Premium services in almost every region. There are several levers available with the company which can help it increase the paid subscriber base. It has already announced another big price increase. This is a sign that the management is confident in customer retention and attracting new customers. At the current subscriber base and growth rates, the Premium and Music subscriber base could reach over 100 million by 2025.

It is very likely that we could see a change in market share ranking in the rapidly changing music streaming industry. Apple Music at the second spot could be a big loser as Amazon and Google ramp up their efforts to gain more subscribers by leveraging their ecosystem.

Impact on Apple stock

It needs to be noted that the contribution of music subscription business to Apple's top line and bottom line is very low. If we take the annual average selling price of $100 for Apple Music and a subscriber base of 75 million, it will lead to revenue base of $7.5 billion. This is a mere 2% of its fiscal revenue base. The margins in this business are wafer-thin or negative. Hence, the contribution to bottom line would be even more insignificant.

However, there is a big impact of the music streaming subscriber base on future subscription services launched by Apple. The management has not released any subscriber numbers in this service for over two years. If other third-party estimates show a decline in Apple Music's market share, it will send a negative signal to Wall Street on the ability of the company to enter new services and deliver good growth. We could also see a bearish sentiment towards the overall moat of the company and its long term growth projections.

Ycharts

Figure 3: Apple's PE ratio over the last few years. A poor performance in music streaming business can have a negative impact on the overall subscription business which will pull down the growth trend for Services segment.

Apple's higher PE ratio has been due to the growth potential of Service segment. If there is a major headwind within the Service segment it can lead to a strong bearish sentiment toward the stock. Investors should closely look at the evolving music streaming space to gauge Apple’s next move and its impact on the stock.

Investor Takeaway

Apple has been losing market share in the music streaming business as Amazon and Google increase their presence. Both Amazon and Google have a strong ecosystem of services and are leading in smart speaker market share. Amazon has over 50 million paid subscribers in its music streaming platform and Google also has over 50 million subscribers for its Premium and Music service. At this base, these services are moving the needle for these tech majors and we should see a massive increase in their effort to gain more subscribers.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; It reported over 50 million paid subscribers in Premium and Music subscription which is slightly behind Apple Music's last announcement of paid subscriber numbers. YouTube has a massive user base and it is trying to promote the Premium services in almost every region. There are several levers available with the company which can help it increase the paid subscriber base. It has already announced another big price increase. This is a sign that the management is confident in customer retention and attracting new customers. At the current subscriber base and growth rates, the Premium and Music subscriber base could reach over 100 million by 2025.It is very likely that we could see a change in market share ranking in the rapidly changing music streaming industry. Apple Music at the second spot could be a big loser as Amazon and Google ramp up their efforts to gain more subscribers by leveraging their ecosystem.Impact on Apple stockIt needs to be noted that the contribution of music subscription business to Apple's top line and bottom line is very low. We could also see a bearish sentiment towards the overall moat of the company and its long term growth projections.YchartsFigure 3: Apple's PE ratio over the last few years. Source: YchartsDespite the recent correction, Apple's PE ratio is significantly above the long-term average PE ratio. A poor performance in music streaming business can have a negative impact on the overall subscription business which will pull down the growth trend for Services segment.Apple's higher PE ratio has been due to the growth potential of Service segment. If there is a major headwind within the Service segment it can lead to a strong bearish sentiment toward the stock. Investors should closely look at the evolving music streaming space to gauge Apple’s next move and its impact on the stock.Investor TakeawayApple has been losing market share in the music streaming business as Amazon and Google increase their presence. Both Amazon and Google have a strong ecosystem of services and are leading in smart speaker market share. Amazon has over 50 million paid subscribers in its music streaming platform and Google also has over 50 million subscribers for its Premium and Music service. At this base, these services are moving the needle for these tech majors and we should see a massive increase in their effort to gain more subscribers.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"AAPL":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1238,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":374704080,"gmtCreate":1619480023540,"gmtModify":1704724471471,"author":{"id":"3578208726596445","authorId":"3578208726596445","name":"tbp","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6a3a91ebceb5224e3c4a05d72721b9a8","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578208726596445","authorIdStr":"3578208726596445"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like and comment pls!","listText":"Like and comment pls!","text":"Like and comment pls!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":7,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/374704080","repostId":"1184404050","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":603,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3569839276167842","authorId":"3569839276167842","name":"T20250527032","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/86e2b5022bef98be4604a365cb3154c7","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3569839276167842","authorIdStr":"3569839276167842"},"content":"reply my comment, please","text":"reply my comment, please","html":"reply my comment, please"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":161901160,"gmtCreate":1623898794050,"gmtModify":1703822973761,"author":{"id":"3578208726596445","authorId":"3578208726596445","name":"tbp","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6a3a91ebceb5224e3c4a05d72721b9a8","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578208726596445","authorIdStr":"3578208726596445"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like and comment pls!","listText":"Like and comment pls!","text":"Like and comment pls!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":6,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/161901160","repostId":"2144713861","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2144713861","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1623883569,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2144713861?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-17 06:46","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Wall Street closes lower as Fed officials project rate hikes for 2023","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2144713861","media":"Reuters","summary":"June 16 - The three main Wall Street indexes all closed down on Wednesday, as U.S. Federal Reserve officials unnerved investors with indications that the central bank could begin rising interest rates in 2023, a year earlier than expected.New projections saw a majority of 11 of 18 U.S. central bank officials pencil in at least two quarter-percentage-point rate increases for 2023. Also yesterday,Walt Disney(NYSE:DIS)announced its quarterly earnings report, and CEO Bob Chapek noted \"increased production at our studios.\" While that is a positive for theater operators, Disney also reported disappointing subscriber growth in itsstreaming services.
\n
Now what
\n
Lower streaming subscriptions could be a positive sign for the theater business. So, most fintechs tend to partner with licensed banks to do things like hold the deposits they gather from their members (unlicensed banks can't hold deposits on their balance sheet) and originate loans for them in some cases. This typically involves some kind of revenue share. Additionally, because banks can't use deposits to fund loan originations, they have to use higher-cost funding. One of the main benefits of the bank charter will be enabling SoFi to lower its interest expense, which is the interest SoFi pays on the debt it uses to fund assets such as loans. According to its recent regulatory filing, the company's current funding sources for originations include securitization debt and funding from warehouse facilities. SoFi pays interest on this funding of nearly 4% and 1.6%, respectively. This funding is also not as reliable in certain market conditions. Currently, most savings and checking accounts pay out very little interest, and even a lot of high-yield savings accounts pay much less interest than these higher-cost sources. With the bank charter, SoFi will be able to transfer all of the deposits in its cash management SoFi Money product that it currently sends to a partner bank back into SoFi to hold. SoFi Money accounts topped 1.16 million at the end of the third quarter, so they should offer a decent source of funding that will also grow in the future. This will significantly lower SoFi's cost of funding loan originations, or it can maintain both sources if it needs them to grow.Additionally, having a bank charter will make it easier for SoFi to hold loans on its balance sheet, whether that means holding loans for longer periods or to completion. Most fintech consumer lenders sell loans they originate right away to an investor or bank for a fee. But when you hold a loan on the balance sheet, you can collect interest payments every month, and that loan ends up being more profitable over its life, as long as it doesn't go into default. With a bank charter, SoFi will have more clarity from a regulatory perspective on its operations. It is also another signal to investors that SoFi is a trustworthy lender. While the company has a good reputation, given that it has been originating loans for several years now, I think investors see it as a good sign that a fintech company is willing to take some risk on its balance sheet, although I am not yet sure how long SoFi plans to hold its loans. In its first presentation, management showed the impact of the bank charter on earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA). While the numbers have likely changed, as this presentation is now roughly a year old, I think this is illustrative of how helpful the bank charter can be.SoFi January 2021 investor presentation.Hitting a key milestoneWhile the bank charter has been long anticipated, there was some question over it, given some of the regulatory uncertainty in the banking arena in Washington over the past few months. It is also no easy feat for any fintech to obtain a bank charter. The charter will make the deposits that SoFi gathers much more valuable and greatly help the unit economics in its lending division. Ultimately, expect revenue and EBITDA to be higher this year and going forward with the bank charter now secured.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"SOFI":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":453,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":803290921,"gmtCreate":1627439485663,"gmtModify":1703489988130,"author":{"id":"3578208726596445","authorId":"3578208726596445","name":"tbp","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6a3a91ebceb5224e3c4a05d72721b9a8","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578208726596445","authorIdStr":"3578208726596445"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like pls","listText":"Like pls","text":"Like pls","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":9,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/803290921","repostId":"2154991792","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2154991792","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1627428087,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2154991792?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-07-28 07:21","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Wall St snaps five-day up streak as caution rises before tech earnings, Fed","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2154991792","media":"Reuters","summary":"NEW YORK, July 27 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Tuesday, ending a five-day winning streak in the t","content":"
NEW YORK, July 27 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Tuesday, ending a five-day winning streak in the three major indexes, as investors were cautious before results from top tech and internet names and Wednesday's Federal Reserve announcement.
\n
The Nasdaq led the day's declines, registering its biggest daily percentage drop since May 12, but the three indexes pared losses heading into the close and ended well off the lows of the session.
\n
Shares of Apple Inc, Microsoft Corp and Google parent Alphabet Inc , which all reported earnings after the bell, dropped and weighed the most on the Nasdaq and S&P 500 along with Amazon.com Inc , which is expected to report results later this week.
\n
Also, electric-car maker Tesla Inc fell 2%, a day after it posted a bigger-than-expected second-quarter profit but said a global chip shortage that led to temporary factory shutdowns for the automaker remains serious.
\n
Shares of the heavily weighted tech and internet companies have run up recently and last week regained leadership in the market, putting their results even more in the spotlight.
\n
\"Expectations are so high. For leisure and travel stocks like Airbnb that got slammed by pandemic shutdowns, the lifting of Covid curbs means adjusting to a whole new world.

Some tastes people acquired last year as they looked for escapes from lockdown are proving durable, like traveling to national parks by RV. Others, such as boating, grew out of surges in wealth that the stock market rally provided. As the summer travel season heats up, Americans are making new choices in where they go, when they go, how they get there and who joins them.

\"The world is never going back to the way it was,\" said Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky on an earnings call in May. \"And that means that travel is never going back to the way it was either.\"

One major trend is travelers have become more flexible about when and where they go, especially as remote work allows people to blur when they are on and off the clock. Airbnb stock rose May 24, when the company updated booking features, including an option to search for listings without fixed dates or locations.

And consumers aren't the only ones changing their habits. While tourism-dependent destinations suffered last year, the less-packed streets also showed locals the benefits of quieter communities.

Residents and local officials in normally packed hot spots like Italy and Hawaii are considering limiting the number of tourists. Such a seismic change could make visiting these places prohibitively expensive for many people. If the mix of travelers tilts more heavily toward the wealthy, travel stocks will nudge further toward luxury.

Leisure, Travel Industry Stocks

Shares across the sector have rebounded from last year's pandemic lows. The stocks' recent chart action is mixed. But many travel stocks have outperformed the market the past week and could present buying opportunities for investors.

Airline stocks like American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines surged earlier this year on the Reddit stock short squeeze. Then they sold off because business and overseas travel remained weak. Since then, they've consolidated and are approaching buy points.

Cruise stocks like Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line are showing similar patterns.

Meanwhile, shares of boat makers MarineMax and Brunswick as well as RV makers Winnebago and Thor Industries need to regroup after some failed breakouts. They are no longer in buy zones but could form new bases if earnings and sales growth remain strong.

Hotel leader Marriott has been less volatile and is forming a base, though earnings and sales have yet to fully recover.

Airbnb stock has had a more difficult year. It surged after going public in December but began to slump in March as competition from Expedia rival Vrbo rental service reduced the availability of hosts. A mixed Q1 earnings report and the end of a post-IPO lockup period also weighed on Airbnb stock, which popped up 6% Thursday on higher volume but remained 35% off its 2021 high.

When Luxury Means More Privacy

Luxury travel, once the purview of only the ultrarich, may have won over those who might have had the means but not the need to travel lavishly. As travelers sought to avoid crowds during the pandemic, those with the means turned to options like private jets.

Arnie Weissman, editor-in-chief of Travel Weekly, says the pandemic opened luxury travel to a wider customer base. \"Some people developed a taste for it, and it's likely to continue.\"

Kim-Marie Evans, who writes the blog \"Luxury Travel Moms\" and plans travel for high-net-worth clients, told IBD she booked a trip for a family to Anguilla.

They stayed in a four-bedroom villa at the Four Seasons. And rather than flying commercially, they used a private jet service.

Private jet bookings are at or near their pre-pandemic highs, according to Elite Traveler, citing industry tracker FlightAware's data.

In May, private jet company Wheels Up said membership jumped 58% in Q1 to nearly 10,000. And VistaJet, another leading private jet company, said membership climbed 29% from a year ago.

Private jet leasing company NetJets, which is owned by Berkshire Hathaway, says its flight volume dropped to as low as 10% of 2019 numbers at the start of the pandemic.

Now the company, which also offers fractional ownership of its jets, says it's operating at 85% of its 2019 volume. NetJets said in a statement that commercial airlines have reduced their schedules. Consumers also are prioritizing their health and safety, choosing the seclusion of a private jet over a packed jetliner.

Vacation Shift Favors These Travel Stocks

Hotel chains implemented stringent Covid-19 protocols to convince visitors their properties were clean and safe. Still, many travelers opted to rent private homes through Airbnb, where they could avoid mingling with strangers in hotel lobbies, Weismann says.

Travel trends favor Airbnb stock long term, though it currently is slumping. On May 27, analysts at RBC Capital Markets rated shares at outperform, citing secular tailwinds that have yet to be fully appreciated by the market such as its dominant customer engagement.

The pandemic also shed light on the market potential of travel stocks like Marriott, which operates home-rental service Homes & Villas by Marriott International, catering to ultra premium short- and long-term stays, CFRA Research analyst Tuna Amobi says.

The Homes & Villas platform, which offers professionally managed private homes, had around 2,000 units at launch less than two years ago. Today, it lists nearly 25,000 properties.

\"They're where we don't have hotels, and many of them are in more remote locations, which really was quite attractive during Covid,\" said Marriott International President Stephanie Linnartz in a recent call with investors.

Airbnb also finds that customers are visiting smaller cities, towns and rural communities — not the same 20-30 cities that were most popular pre-pandemic. People are traveling outside the peak seasons and staying longer.

\"There is a mass shift from mass travel to meaningful travel,\" CEO Chesky said.

Seaworthy Travel Stocks

Luxury cruising should also come back with a bang. Nearly every cruise line's around-the-world luxury voyage is fully booked two years in advance.

One cruise line, Silversea, said its 139-day around-the-world cruise sold out in a single day.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected $1.3 billion.
