Although this success wasn't limited to tech titans as smaller companies such as chip designer AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) as well as social networks Snap (NYSE:SNAP) and Pinterest (NYSE:PINS) also delivered strong results, Big Tech showed it is on the ride of a lifetime as in every minute of the first three months of this year, Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft combined sold products and services worth about $2.5 million. Profits before tax for the period came in at $88 billion which translates to more than $1 billion of profit for every working day. But with its latest venture into healthcare, Alphabet could possibly reach even new heights.
\n
The Success Scale Of Big Tech Means They Can Rival Countries On Some Metrics
\n
Alphabet, Apple and Microsoft combined spent $50 billion on their R&D efforts in their 2018 financial years. To give you a better idea, that was equivalent to R&D spending by the whole UK economy, according to the most recent data by Office for National Statistics.
\n
Online Advertising Is Booming
\n
Facebook said demand is so high that the average price it charges for ads rose by 30% YoY compared with the start of the pandemic. Alphabet's revenues rose by a third-year thanks to Google's advertising business. Moreover, Alphabet was also helped by fast growth in cloud services under which it offers companies access to data centers, as it thrived during the pandemic-induced home office trend.
\n
Directing Funds Into Pushing Boundaries
\n
Although Alphabet has scaled back some of its spending on the so-called \"moonshot\" programs, it is still investing heavily in an effort to push the boundaries of what computers can do. Under the partnership, Google Cloud will work to develop algorithms based on the provided patient records with the aim to improve the efficiency of the provided services as well as patient outcomes. At the moment, the healthcare industry has a ton of electronic medical records that aren't being fully utilized. But harnessing them in any way that generates more empirical data that can be of use to practitioners while diminishing reliance on anecdotal evidence could truly make a difference and help patients. So, if Google can pull this off- it will be a big deal or more precisely, monumental.
\n
Regulatory Clouds On The Horizon
\n
Tech companies are facing increased regulatory pressures across the globe with Germany, France, and the Netherlands complaining that the EU is not tough enough on Big Tech and called on regulators to make it harder for big tech to rule the world. France fined Google 100 million for breaching rules related to online cookies or in simple words, advertising trackers. Amazon was fined 35 million euros in the same incident in December last year. According to the WSJ, Google has offered to remove the offending technical barriers for competitors to settle the antitrust lawsuit but even if it manages to settle, the tech giant is still likely to pay a fine for its practices till now. Google is also facing similar lawsuits in Texas and a class-action lawsuit over gender-based wage disparity in California.
\n
Outlook
\n
Since Covid-19 started its relentless march across the globe, Big Tech quickly went from a defensive mode in times of uncertainty to impressive growth. It is clear that the digital revolution is here to stay, and whether regulators like it or not, these businesses have embedded their products and services deeply in our lives. As has been the case for most of the past year, Buffett was active in the financial sector, mostly reducing Berkshire Hathaway's positions in banks. At the company's annual investor day earlier this month, Buffett provided some explanation for all the stock selling he's done in that sector.
\n
\"I like banks generally,\" he said, \"I just didn't like the proportion we had compared to the possible risk if we got the bad results that so far we haven't gotten.\"
\n
Let's review the three big changes Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway made to their bank holdings in the first quarter.
\n
\n
1. All but eliminating Wells Fargo
\n
Everyone knew it was coming, but Buffett all but made it official last quarter, nearly eliminating his position in his onetime favorite bank, Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC). Berkshire Hathaway sold 51.7 million shares, dropping its stake to a mere 675,000 shares valued at $26.3 million.
\n
This essentially ends what was an epic run for the Oracle of Omaha and Wells Fargo. Buffett first purchased shares in the large U.S. bank in 1989, and by 1994, he had acquired more than 13% of its outstanding shares. At the end of the third quarter of 2019, before the pandemic, Buffett's stake, which had a rough original cost basis of just below $9 billion, was worth close to $20 billion. And at one point back in 2017, it was reportedly worth as much as $29 billion.
\n
But as the fallout of Wells Fargo's phony accounts scandal and other revelations about its consumer abuses continued to play out, Buffett began to lose faith in the institution and started trimming his position. It looks like Buffett ultimately ended up making much less on his Wells Fargo investment than he could have, considering he sold more than 323 million shares between the end of Q1 2020 and the end of Q1 2021. During that 12-month period, the bank's shares traded from a low of $21.45 to a high of $39.07. At the end of 2019, they traded north of $53.
\n
The stock closed at $45.73 on Thursday, and many investors still believe Wells Fargo is undervalued these days, trading at 135% tangible book value (equity minus intangible assets and goodwill). Bank valuations have shot up in recent months, and Wells Fargo in particular could see more tailwinds when the Federal Reserve lifts the $1.95 trillion asset cap that the bank has been operating under since 2018.
\n
2. Dumping Synchrony Financial
\n
Last quarter, Berkshire Hathaway also eliminated its entire stake in the consumer finance credit card company Synchrony Financial (NYSE:SYF), selling its 21.1 million shares. Synchrony uses what it calls a \"partner-centric\" business model under which it teams up with leading retailers and digital brands that promote Synchrony's credit cards. Consumers can get deals on specific purchases by opening Synchrony credit cards, which are often branded under a retailer's name.
\n
While I wouldn't say I saw this move coming, it doesn't entirely surprise me. Over the last year, Buffett has become even more selective about which banks he wants to own. He seems to be picking a winner or two in each banking industry subcategory -- for instance, he sold his stake in America's largest bank, JPMorgan Chase, and loaded up on America's second-largest bank, Bank of America.
\n
Considering that Buffett already has a huge position in American Express, and loves the brand, that is likely going to be his pick for a credit-card-focused holding. Berkshire Hathaway likely made a good profit on that Synchrony investment, though, considering that the stock hit its highest level ever during Q1.
\n
3. Trimming U.S. Bancorp again
\n
Berkshire Hathaway also sold about 1.45 million shares of U.S. Bancorp (NYSE:USB) in the first quarter -- but it still owns nearly 129.7 million shares. The Oracle of Omaha has sold small quantities of shares of the Minnesota-based regional bank a few times over the last year, and it's a bit unclear why. It does appear that he has made U.S. Bancorp his regional bank pick, though. He sold off his other regional bank holdings, including his stakes in PNC Financial Services Group and M&T Bank, in the fourth quarter of 2020.
\n
One possible explanation relates to Buffett's well-known desire to keep his stakes in those banks below 10%, so he can avoid the additional reporting requirements that a higher ownership level would trigger. At the end of the first quarter, Buffett owned about 8.7% of U.S. Bancorp's outstanding shares. So his stock sale may have simply been a move to prepare for the bank's planned share repurchases, which should accelerate later this year. Last quarter's adjustment should maintain Berkshire Hathaway's stake at a level comfortably under the 10% threshold, even after U.S. Bancorp's total share count is reduced.
\n
Overall, I still feel confident that Buffett plans to stick with U.S. Bancorp, although I will continue to watch his moves in upcoming quarters to see if he further reduces his stake in it.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Here Are the 3 Bank Moves Warren Buffett Has Made So Far in 2021
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nHere Are the 3 Bank Moves Warren Buffett Has Made So Far in 2021\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-05-21 23:36 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A) (NYSE:BRK.B) recently filed its 13F form for the first quarter of 2021, detailing what stock sales and purchases the conglomerate and the legendary investor in charge, ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"BRK.B":"伯克希尔B","SYF":"Synchrony Financial","BRK.A":"伯克希尔","WFC":"富国银行","USB":"美国合众银行"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2021/05/21/here-are-the-3-bank-moves-warren-buffett-has-made/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2137906121","content_text":"Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A) (NYSE:BRK.B) recently filed its 13F form for the first quarter of 2021, detailing what stock sales and purchases the conglomerate and the legendary investor in charge, Warren Buffett, made during the period. As has been the case for most of the past year, Buffett was active in the financial sector, mostly reducing Berkshire Hathaway's positions in banks. At the company's annual investor day earlier this month, Buffett provided some explanation for all the stock selling he's done in that sector.\n\"I like banks generally,\" he said, \"I just didn't like the proportion we had compared to the possible risk if we got the bad results that so far we haven't gotten.\"\nLet's review the three big changes Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway made to their bank holdings in the first quarter.\nImage source: Getty Images.\n1. All but eliminating Wells Fargo\nEveryone knew it was coming, but Buffett all but made it official last quarter, nearly eliminating his position in his onetime favorite bank, Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC). Berkshire Hathaway sold 51.7 million shares, dropping its stake to a mere 675,000 shares valued at $26.3 million.\nThis essentially ends what was an epic run for the Oracle of Omaha and Wells Fargo. And at one point back in 2017, it was reportedly worth as much as $29 billion.\nBut as the fallout of Wells Fargo's phony accounts scandal and other revelations about its consumer abuses continued to play out, Buffett began to lose faith in the institution and started trimming his position. At the end of 2019, they traded north of $53.\nThe stock closed at $45.73 on Thursday, and many investors still believe Wells Fargo is undervalued these days, trading at 135% tangible book value (equity minus intangible assets and goodwill). Bank valuations have shot up in recent months, and Wells Fargo in particular could see more tailwinds when the Federal Reserve lifts the $1.95 trillion asset cap that the bank has been operating under since 2018.\n2. Dumping Synchrony Financial\nLast quarter, Berkshire Hathaway also eliminated its entire stake in the consumer finance credit card company Synchrony Financial (NYSE:SYF), selling its 21.1 million shares. Synchrony uses what it calls a \"partner-centric\" business model under which it teams up with leading retailers and digital brands that promote Synchrony's credit cards. Consumers can get deals on specific purchases by opening Synchrony credit cards, which are often branded under a retailer's name.\nWhile I wouldn't say I saw this move coming, it doesn't entirely surprise me. Over the last year, Buffett has become even more selective about which banks he wants to own. He seems to be picking a winner or two in each banking industry subcategory -- for instance, he sold his stake in America's largest bank, JPMorgan Chase, and loaded up on America's second-largest bank, Bank of America.\nConsidering that Buffett already has a huge position in American Express, and loves the brand, that is likely going to be his pick for a credit-card-focused holding. Berkshire Hathaway likely made a good profit on that Synchrony investment, though, considering that the stock hit its highest level ever during Q1.\n3. Trimming U.S. Bancorp again\nBerkshire Hathaway also sold about 1.45 million shares of U.S. \nOne possible explanation relates to Buffett's well-known desire to keep his stakes in those banks below 10%, so he can avoid the additional reporting requirements that a higher ownership level would trigger. \nOverall, I still feel confident that Buffett plans to stick with U.S. Bancorp, although I will continue to watch his moves in upcoming quarters to see if he further reduces his stake in it.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":74,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":186184385,"gmtCreate":1623478559947,"gmtModify":1704204791085,"author":{"id":"3578306475134606","authorId":"3578306475134606","name":"Apipu","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578306475134606","authorIdStr":"3578306475134606"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Senseonics(SENS)$sooooo goood","listText":"$Senseonics(SENS)$sooooo goood","text":"$Senseonics(SENS)$sooooo goood","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cca22126f613d9793ca1d1fdfa9f13e7","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":1,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/186184385","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":126,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":197890730,"gmtCreate":1621437407420,"gmtModify":1704357691847,"author":{"id":"3578306475134606","authorId":"3578306475134606","name":"Apipu","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578306475134606","authorIdStr":"3578306475134606"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Cool","listText":"Cool","text":"Cool","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/197890730","repostId":"1134860607","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1134860607","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1621436642,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1134860607?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-05-19 23:04","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Alibaba: The Stock Set To Outperform","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1134860607","media":"seekingalpha","summary":"Summary\n\nAlibaba is currently trading at ~18.7x EBITDA, which is an attractive multiple for a busine","content":"
Summary
\n
\n
Alibaba is currently trading at ~18.7x EBITDA, which is an attractive multiple for a business that's growing at double-digit rates.
\n
The most recent earnings report shows the business is growing strongly, despite facing a one-time fine from the Chinese government.
\n
Alibaba stock is set to outperform as it is sitting well below its 200-day moving average.
\n
BABA has generated juicy returns over the next 12 and 24 months every time it has been here.
\n
\n
Photo by Andrew Burton/Getty Images News via Getty Images
\n
Mr. Market is not happy with Alibaba Group (BABA) these days and has been quoting the stock at significantly lower prices than its all-time high just 8 months ago. BABA hit an all-time high of $319 in October 2020. As of this writing, BABA is trading at ~$214, which is 34% below its all-time high.
\n
In my opinion, Mr. Market is giving investors a great opportunity to grab shares of a great company with strong growth potential at highly attractive valuation. Simply said, BABA looks like a good buying opportunity when considering recent growth trends as well the stock setup and valuation. Therefore, I upsized my existing position.
\n
This article covers Alibaba's most recent earnings results, the stock setup going forward, a valuation update using EV/EBITDA, and key risks in the investment. Without further ado, let us dive in.
\n
Earnings Report Highlights
\n
The latest quarterly results showed Alibaba's core businesses continue to higher revenues and higher profits. All key metrics are growing at double-digit rates. Here is a summary of the key metrics that I am most focused on from the report, along with my opinion on what it means:
\n
\n
Annual active users and monthly active users grew by 32 and 23 million, respectively. This means that as e-commerce continues to take market share, more people continue to flock to Alibaba ecosystem. This indicator suggests the business keeps adding new users, which is surely a positive factor for the stock.
\n
Quarterly total revenue growth was 64% over the prior year, driven by inorganic growth due to acquisitions as well as organic growth. Organic growth was roughly 40% over the prior year. This is also a positive as it shows the business continues to grow at strong rates, along with reaping the benefits of recent acquisitions.
\n
Quarterly Adjusted EBITDA grew by 18% over the prior year, and its growth rate stands at 25% over the TTM (trailing twelve months). Although 18% of EBITDA growth is quite high compared to most other businesses, the deceleration is not ideal. This implies lower profit margins as it is tracking lower than revenue growth. My take on this is goldilocks. Not ideal, but not terrible.
\n
\n
In addition to the strong business metrics, there was something unique in last quarter's result. Something that seems to be impacting BABA negatively.
\n
The last quarter was unique because it included a big fine from the State Administration for Market Regulation of the People's Republic of China due to monopolistic behavior. After a long investigation, the government fined Alibaba approximately $2.8 billion as a result of engaging in monopolistic tactics that suppressed competition. The fine caused Alibaba to report a rare operating loss. Unlike many fast-growing companies, Alibaba does not typically report operating losses because it is a highly profitable business. That makes this fine stand out.
\n
In my opinion, this fine is a critical factor that explains why Alibaba stock has been declining. Receiving a big fine from the government is no good thing. However, I do not believe the fine is a big deal because it represents more of a \"slap in the wrist\" than a real threat to the long-term viability of the business. Here is why.
\n
First of all, the fine is relatively small. Yes. $2.8 billion is a lot of money, but in relative terms, it is not that much. It represents only 2.5% of global revenues and less than 1% of EV (enterprise value). Relative to the size of Alibaba, it is small potatoes. No big deal.
\n
Secondly, the fine is technically a one-time expense that will not probably repeat in the future. That means Alibaba should be reporting an operating profit next quarter as Alibaba promised the Chinese government to \"serve our responsibility to society and will operate in accordance with the law with utmost diligence\". Furthermore, Alibaba holds more than $49 billion of cash, meaning the fine will be easily paid and won't break the bank.
\n
The stock setup for the next 12 and 24 months
\n
As of this writing, BABA is currently trading well below its 200-day moving average (about 18% below to be precise). Historically, every time BABA has been in this spot it has performed very well in the future.
\n
Most investors probably know that Alibaba is still a relatively young stock. It has been trading publicly for about 7 years. Its IPO was in September 2014. Since its IPO, BABA has traded this far below its 200-day moving average only a couple of times, as shown in the chart below by the green circles.
\n

\n
Every time the stock was there was because of some bad news that impacted Mr. Market sentiment. In late 2018, the trade war between US and China that former President Donald Trump started impacted Alibaba along with many other Chinese stocks. This time, it seems to be the big fine from the government coupled with decelerating profit growth that's causing negative sentiment.
\n
As I show in the table below, every time the stock has been there, buyers of the stock were handsomely rewarded by strong returns over the next 12 or 24 months. The table below shows total return over the next 12 and 24 months, after Alibaba has gone this far below its 200 day moving average.
\n
Source: Seeking Alpha, Author computations
\n
To make things even better, BABA outperformed the S&P 500 each time it has been trading this far below its 200-day moving average (except on the 12 months following July 8, 2015), which means today's setup is great for both absolute and relative returns.
\n
Given that BABA is in a similar setup this time around compared to those dates, will BABA outperform the S&P over the next 12 or 24 months? Will it produce enormous returns like it did last time? My bet is it will because history suggests BABA is on the cusp of staging a meaningful rally. But as everyone here should know, there are no guarantees. Time will tell.
\n
Valuation
\n
My preferred valuation method is using EV/EBITDA (aka EBITDA multiple) because it eliminates biases from different tax bases as well as capital structure. Given Alibaba is mostly a Chinese company, this valuation method allows for comparison with other US companies.
\n
Using the actual EBITDA of $30.04 billion over the TTM, the current stock price implies an EBITDA multiple of 18.7x. For a business that is growing at double-digit rates, that multiple seems quite cheap.
\n
My calculation of EV and EV/EBITDA is shown below, using the RMB/USD exchange rate as of the balance sheet date.
\n
Source: earnings report, author computations
\n
Attentive readers will probably wonder if the $30 billion of EBITDA includes or excludes the fine discussed above. Because that fine is most likely a one-time expense that won't repeat, it is excluded from the last 12 months EBITDA.
\n
Risks
\n
The main risk with Alibaba is political risk. As mentioned above, the Chinese government has recently fined Alibaba. Because Alibaba generates most of its revenues in China, there is a chance the Chinese government launches one or more investigations, which means there could be more fines coming. The next one could be more damaging.
\n
Additionally, Alibaba generates most of its revenues from China, and its functional currency is the Chinese RMB (Renminbi). Therefore, investors that are focused on generating returns in USD are taking currency risk by investing in Alibaba. If the RMB depreciates relative to the USD, then the stock could be negatively impacted even if revenues and profits keep growing.
\n
Investor Conclusion
\n
The most recent earnings results show once again that Alibaba's growth machine is robust. Revenue and profits keep growing at double-digit rates, and the fine from the government is now in the rear-view mirror. These growth rates alone are a great reason to buy the stock.
\n
Additionally, BABA is trading about 34% below itsall-time high and 18% below its 200-day moving average. BABA hit an all-time high of $319 in October 2020. As of this writing, BABA is trading at ~$214, which is 34% below its all-time high.\nIn my opinion, Mr. Market is giving investors a great opportunity to grab shares of a great company with strong growth potential at highly attractive valuation. Simply said, BABA looks like a good buying opportunity when considering recent growth trends as well the stock setup and valuation. Therefore, I upsized my existing position.\nThis article covers Alibaba's most recent earnings results, the stock setup going forward, a valuation update using EV/EBITDA, and key risks in the investment. Without further ado, let us dive in.\nEarnings Report Highlights\nThe latest quarterly results showed Alibaba's core businesses continue to higher revenues and higher profits. All key metrics are growing at double-digit rates. Here is a summary of the key metrics that I am most focused on from the report, along with my opinion on what it means:\n\nAnnual active users and monthly active users grew by 32 and 23 million, respectively. This means that as e-commerce continues to take market share, more people continue to flock to Alibaba ecosystem. This indicator suggests the business keeps adding new users, which is surely a positive factor for the stock.\nQuarterly total revenue growth was 64% over the prior year, driven by inorganic growth due to acquisitions as well as organic growth. Organic growth was roughly 40% over the prior year. This is also a positive as it shows the business continues to grow at strong rates, along with reaping the benefits of recent acquisitions.\nQuarterly Adjusted EBITDA grew by 18% over the prior year, and its growth rate stands at 25% over the TTM (trailing twelve months). Although 18% of EBITDA growth is quite high compared to most other businesses, the deceleration is not ideal. This implies lower profit margins as it is tracking lower than revenue growth. My take on this is goldilocks. Not ideal, but not terrible.\n\nIn addition to the strong business metrics, there was something unique in last quarter's result. Something that seems to be impacting BABA negatively.\nThe last quarter was unique because it included a big fine from the State Administration for Market Regulation of the People's Republic of China due to monopolistic behavior. That makes this fine stand out.\nIn my opinion, this fine is a critical factor that explains why Alibaba stock has been declining. Receiving a big fine from the government is no good thing. However, I do not believe the fine is a big deal because it represents more of a \"slap in the wrist\" than a real threat to the long-term viability of the business. Here is why.\nFirst of all, the fine is relatively small. Yes. $2.8 billion is a lot of money, but in relative terms, it is not that much. It represents only 2.5% of global revenues and less than 1% of EV (enterprise value). Relative to the size of Alibaba, it is small potatoes. No big deal.\nSecondly, the fine is technically a one-time expense that will not probably repeat in the future. That means Alibaba should be reporting an operating profit next quarter as Alibaba promised the Chinese government to \"serve our responsibility to society and will operate in accordance with the law with utmost diligence\". Furthermore, Alibaba holds more than $49 billion of cash, meaning the fine will be easily paid and won't break the bank.\nThe stock setup for the next 12 and 24 months\nAs of this writing, BABA is currently trading well below its 200-day moving average (about 18% below to be precise). Historically, every time BABA has been in this spot it has performed very well in the future.\nMost investors probably know that Alibaba is still a relatively young stock. It has been trading publicly for about 7 years. Its IPO was in September 2014. Since its IPO, BABA has traded this far below its 200-day moving average only a couple of times, as shown in the chart below by the green circles.\n\nEvery time the stock was there was because of some bad news that impacted Mr. Market sentiment. In late 2018, the trade war between US and China that former President Donald Trump started impacted Alibaba along with many other Chinese stocks. This time, it seems to be the big fine from the government coupled with decelerating profit growth that's causing negative sentiment.\nAs I show in the table below, every time the stock has been there, buyers of the stock were handsomely rewarded by strong returns over the next 12 or 24 months. The table below shows total return over the next 12 and 24 months, after Alibaba has gone this far below its 200 day moving average.\nSource: Seeking Alpha, Author computations\nTo make things even better, BABA outperformed the S&P 500 each time it has been trading this far below its 200-day moving average (except on the 12 months following July 8, 2015), which means today's setup is great for both absolute and relative returns.\nGiven that BABA is in a similar setup this time around compared to those dates, will BABA outperform the S&P over the next 12 or 24 months? Will it produce enormous returns like it did last time? My bet is it will because history suggests BABA is on the cusp of staging a meaningful rally. But as everyone here should know, there are no guarantees. Time will tell.\nValuation\nMy preferred valuation method is using EV/EBITDA (aka EBITDA multiple) because it eliminates biases from different tax bases as well as capital structure. Given Alibaba is mostly a Chinese company, this valuation method allows for comparison with other US companies.\nUsing the actual EBITDA of $30.04 billion over the TTM, the current stock price implies an EBITDA multiple of 18.7x. For a business that is growing at double-digit rates, that multiple seems quite cheap.\nMy calculation of EV and EV/EBITDA is shown below, using the RMB/USD exchange rate as of the balance sheet date.\nSource: earnings report, author computations\nAttentive readers will probably wonder if the $30 billion of EBITDA includes or excludes the fine discussed above. Because that fine is most likely a one-time expense that won't repeat, it is excluded from the last 12 months EBITDA.\nRisks\nThe main risk with Alibaba is political risk. As mentioned above, the Chinese government has recently fined Alibaba. Because Alibaba generates most of its revenues in China, there is a chance the Chinese government launches one or more investigations, which means there could be more fines coming. The next one could be more damaging.\nAdditionally, Alibaba generates most of its revenues from China, and its functional currency is the Chinese RMB (Renminbi). Therefore, investors that are focused on generating returns in USD are taking currency risk by investing in Alibaba. If the RMB depreciates relative to the USD, then the stock could be negatively impacted even if revenues and profits keep growing.\nInvestor Conclusion\nThe most recent earnings results show once again that Alibaba's growth machine is robust. Revenue and profits keep growing at double-digit rates, and the fine from the government is now in the rear-view mirror. These growth rates alone are a great reason to buy the stock.\nAdditionally, BABA is trading about 34% below itsall-time high and 18% below its 200-day moving average. Historically, there have been two times when BABA traded this far below its 200-day moving average. Both times BABA staged a strong comeback and produced enormous returns for those who bought the dip.\nAlibaba is trading at 18.7x EBITDA, and that multiple looks highly attractive to buy the stock. Despite the risks, the rewards seem to be worth it.\nFor those reasons, BABA seems to be a great buy opportunity currently.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":137,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":345489804,"gmtCreate":1618329614408,"gmtModify":1704709324833,"author":{"id":"3578306475134606","authorId":"3578306475134606","name":"Apipu","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578306475134606","authorIdStr":"3578306475134606"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Apple(AAPL)$keep rising!!","listText":"$Apple(AAPL)$keep rising!!","text":"$Apple(AAPL)$keep rising!!","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/621f17872cc20969274e2d922c5bac36","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/345489804","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":83,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":893092009,"gmtCreate":1628219093401,"gmtModify":1703503399947,"author":{"id":"3578306475134606","authorId":"3578306475134606","name":"Apipu","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578306475134606","authorIdStr":"3578306475134606"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Waiting for Friday report","listText":"Waiting for Friday report","text":"Waiting for Friday report","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/893092009","repostId":"2157456017","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2157456017","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1628204156,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2157456017?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-08-06 06:55","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Nasdaq, S&P 500, set records as jobless claims decline","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2157456017","media":"Reuters","summary":"* Nasdaq, S&P 500 close at record highs\n* Layoff at lowest in over 21 years\n* Healthcare and materia","content":"
* Nasdaq, S&P 500 close at record highs
\n
* Layoff at lowest in over 21 years
\n
* Healthcare and materials sectoral losers on S&P 500
\n
Aug 5 (Reuters) - The Nasdaq and S&P 500 closed at record levels on Thursday after a spate of strong corporate earnings and a further decline in U.S. unemployment claims last week, as investors weighed concerns of the surge of the Delta variant ahead of Friday's job's report.
\n
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell by 14,000 to 385,000 in the week ended July 31, while layoffs dropped to their lowest level in more than 21 years last month as companies held on to their workers amid a labor shortage, the Labor Department's report showed.
\n
\"The directional change has continued to be improving in the last few weeks and now it's a new low since beginning the pandemic,\" said Keith Buchanan, portfolio manager at Globalt Investments in Atlanta, Georgia. \"I think that's what (is) kind of leading to some optimism today and earnings to this point have been positive.\"
\n
Nine of the 11 major S&P 500 sector indexes rose, with healthcare stocks in the red as Cigna Corp slipped 10.9% after predicting a bigger hit to full-year earnings from the pandemic.
\n
Focus will now shift to the jobs report for July on Friday.
