Core inflation (which excludes the volatile gas and food categories) was up 4.5% year-over-year. Both were up 0.9% over last month, the biggest jump since 2008.</p>\n<p>Here’s what analysts had to say about the report, and what it means going forward.</p>\n<p><b>Good news and bad news</b></p>\n<p>A big question surrounding inflation recently is whether it’s transitory or more likely to become more sustained. (“An episode of one-time price increases as the economy reopens is not likely to lead to persistent year-over-year inflation into the future,” Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in April.)</p>\n<p>Bank of America's economics team pointed out that its \"meter\" recently showed historic temporary inflation.</p>\n<p>“The bad news is that we are still not out of the woods, as core CPI and core PCE % year-over-year inflation are likely to remain elevated through year-end and into early 2022,” the bank’s Alexander Lin wrote in a note to clients. “The good news is that we are likely near the peak, at least for the next few months, as base effects are less favorable and shortage pressures rotate away from goods towards services.”</p>\n<p>Furthermore, Lin continued, “There is even risk that transitory inflation turns into transitory disinflation.” If that happened, it could change the Fed’s position.</p>\n<p>The supply and demand shocks have been unlike anything in recent memory, with the pandemic leading to shortages and demand shocks and then reopening causing a demand whiplash. The pendulum could swing the other way.</p>\n<p>“A big question for goods and commodities inflation once the shortages and bottlenecks ease is whether there will be a leveling off in prices or a negative payback,” Lin wrote. “Thus, transitory disinflation could be substantial next year. This could create a new challenge for Fed communication and the hiking timeline.”</p>\n<p><b>More broad-based than usual</b></p>\n<p>Expectations going into the inflation numbers focused on energy costs, which has an outsize impact on the CPI number.</p>\n<p>In a preview note, DataTrek’s Nicholas Colas pointed out that gas price inflation played a big role, making up 40% of June’s headline (total, unadjusted for gas and food) inflation.</p>\n<p>Gas played a big role in inflation, but as Peter Essele, Head of Investment Management for Commonwealth Financial Network, wrote, inflation was felt across the board in many areas.</p>\n<p>“It appears the June increase was more broad-based in nature with spillover into the core components of CPI, notably the services component. Shelter, for instance, which makes up roughly one-third of headline CPI is slowly marching higher, with June’s print showing an increase 2.6% year-over-year,” he wrote. “Used cars and trucks prices have increased 45% over the last year, which signals the largest move ever.”</p>\n<p><b>Still no answers as to what’s permanent</b></p>\n<p>Analysts were surprised by higher-than-expected total and core CPI metrics. But the numbers did little to clarify the biggest question: how permanent is any of this?</p>\n<p>In a note to clients, TD Securities analysts said they thought the inflation increases in travel and used vehicles meant that the inflation was \"largely\" transitory. The big issue it saw was in rents reaccelerating up after a slowdown last year, which would point to something more permanent.</p>\n<p>\"As we illustrated once again in our latest US CPI Scanner, some private sector data tracking rents show much more strengthening than the CPI data in recent months, but the same data showed much more weakening in 2020,” analysts wrote.</p>\n<p>Frustratingly for those who want more certainty, this could still be transitory, however.</p>\n<p>“Some of the strengthening in rents could also be transitory to the extent the boost from reopening is at its peak now,” the note said.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d3582073f113b6736eb2de8224fd02d8\" tg-width=\"705\" tg-height=\"470\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JUNE 10: A customer shops for meat at a supermarket on June 10, 2021 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Scott Olson/Getty Images)More</p>\n<p><b>What this means for the Federal Reserve</b></p>\n<p>One of the Federal Reserve’s key jobs is to control inflation, so of course, the data begs the question: What will the Fed do? Will it maintain its easy money policies meant to boost the economy through the pandemic?</p>\n<p>Bank of America's Lin said the bank doesn't \"believe this report changes much for the Fed.” The reason, echoed by TD Securities analysts, is because these price increases seem to be largely transitory, at least with the data we have now. And if this period is indeed almost over, transitory deflation or some opposite pendulum swing is something the Fed might not want to make worse.</p>\n<p>Still, the latest data makes it harder for this “wait and see” to continue, ING’s James Knightley wrote.</p>\n<p>“Yet another blowout inflation reading makes it increasingly difficult for the Fed to stick to its position that elevated inflation readings are merely ‘transitory,’” Knightley wrote. (“An episode of one-time price increases as the economy reopens is not likely to lead to persistent year-over-year inflation into the future,” Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in April.)\nBank of America's economics team pointed out that its \"meter\" recently showed historic temporary inflation.\n“The bad news is that we are still not out of the woods, as core CPI and core PCE % year-over-year inflation are likely to remain elevated through year-end and into early 2022,” the bank’s Alexander Lin wrote in a note to clients. “The good news is that we are likely near the peak, at least for the next few months, as base effects are less favorable and shortage pressures rotate away from goods towards services.”\nFurthermore, Lin continued, “There is even risk that transitory inflation turns into transitory disinflation.” If that happened, it could change the Fed’s position.\nThe supply and demand shocks have been unlike anything in recent memory, with the pandemic leading to shortages and demand shocks and then reopening causing a demand whiplash. It’s an elite club.</p>\n<p>Now that Facebook (ticker: FB) has earned access—its market cap was down slightly by the end of the week, to $980 billion—we might be waiting a while for the next entrant. That’s partly because the federal government wants to rein in big business, but also because the current trillion-dollar members have a natural incentive to keep the club small.</p>\n<p>There’s a big drop-off to the next candidate for membership—call it the Trillion-Dollar Cliff. Among U.S.-listed companies,Tesla(TSLA) is next up, with a market value of $629 billion, followed by&nbsp;Berkshire Hathaway(BRK.A),Alibaba Group Holding(BABA),Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM), and&nbsp;Visa(V).</p>\n<p>We’ve covered all of those stocks closely at&nbsp;Barron’s, and I’ve spent the past few weeks talking to colleagues about which company might be next. I’ve also queried sources and polled readers of our daily Review &amp; Preview newsletter.</p>\n<p>A few names get repeated mentions: Tesla,Nvidia(NVDA), Visa, and&nbsp;JPMorgan Chase(JPM), each of which are worth at least $400 billion.Shopify(SHOP) got a less obvious mention. The company is way down the market-value rank at $182 billion. It has become something of the anti-Amazon,providing bricks-and-mortar vendors and other businesses with easy e-commerce tools. While&nbsp;Amazon.com(AMZN) seeks to fend off regulation and a potential breakup, Shopify can keep its head down and continue to recruit new business.</p>\n<p>I’ll place my bets on Visa getting to $1 trillion next, even if it takes a while. The company is closely tied to the economic recovery, since it gets a cut of transactions that run through its global electronic-payments network.</p>\n<p>The business, which is part tech and part financial services, has a long tailwind as cash usage declines around the world. Visa shares have returned an annualized 28% over the past decade. If that pattern holds, Visa would reach $1 trillion by 2024.</p>\n<p>While the next trillion-dollar stock is clearly a guessing game, one thing is clear: Large numbers have been no impediment to future gains.Apple(AAPL) has returned an annualized 44% since it became the first U.S.-listed company to reach a $1 trillion value in August 2018. The stock closed at a record this past week, giving it a market value of $2.4 trillion.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ed700f7a7812c0bf7b9b205ad99c33e7\" tg-width=\"872\" tg-height=\"769\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>I asked Denise Chisholm, Fidelity’s sector strategist, if the so-called law of large numbers would ever kick in. “Size is not particularly predictive one way or the other,” she says. “The S&amp;P information technology, as a percent of overall S&amp;P, is now in excess of 20%. Does that have any meaning on whether or not that group or that sector can outperform in the future? The answer really is no.”</p>\n<p>Right now, the trillion-dollar members have momentum on their side. “A ball in motion tends to stay in motion,” she says.</p>\n<p>Tech’s secret sauce has been continuously expanding profit margins, with valuations that are essentially in line with their historic norms. Operating margins for the S&amp;P 500’s information technology sector have doubled in the past 15 years, to a recent 21%, according to Yardeni Research, while overall S&amp;P 500 margins have been static at 10% or so (excluding a collapse during the financial crisis).</p>\n<p>Tech’s magic—and those trillion-dollar club passes—are now hitting up against the increased likelihood of regulation. “The sheer fact of the headline of the trillion-dollar club is going to bring even more regulation,” says Jim Paulsen, chief investment officer of The Leuthold Group.</p>\n<p>On Friday, the Biden administration signed an executive order that calls for a “whole-of-government effort to promote competition in the American economy.” The order, which consists of 72 initiatives, is simultaneously broad and narrow. It pushes against consolidation while also addressing consumer pain points, like early-termination fees for broadband services, hard-to-fix consumer devices, and airline baggage fees.</p>\n<p>By now, the Biden administration recognizes that tech regulation isn’t a slam dunk with the public. Despite unease around data and privacy practices, less than half of U.S. adults are in favor of more tech regulation, according to a 2020 Pew Research poll.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/963cb5c585db8df9615cd98e0bbd4bbc\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"840\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>A room at the F8 Developers Conference in San Jose, Calif.</span></p>\n<p>Privacy regulation is politically complicated, especially if it means reining in the advertising that enables free services like social media, internet search, and email. But there isn’t much controversial about limiting broadband charges or making it easier to fix a smartphone battery. The White House seems to be attacking companies where it hurts—their mixed record of customer service.</p>\n<p>For now, investors continue to generally overlook regulation. That’s roughly the odds of a high school basketball player making the National Basketball Association. It’s an elite club.\nNow that Facebook (ticker: FB) has earned access—its market cap was down slightly by the end of the week, to $980 billion—we might be waiting a while for the next entrant. That’s partly because the federal government wants to rein in big business, but also because the current trillion-dollar members have a natural incentive to keep the club small.\nThere’s a big drop-off to the next candidate for membership—call it the Trillion-Dollar Cliff. Among U.S.-listed companies,Tesla(TSLA) is next up, with a market value of $629 billion, followed by Berkshire Hathaway(BRK.A),Alibaba Group Holding(BABA),Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM), and Visa(V).\nWe’ve covered all of those stocks closely at Barron’s, and I’ve spent the past few weeks talking to colleagues about which company might be next. I’ve also queried sources and polled readers of our daily Review & Preview newsletter.\nA few names get repeated mentions: Tesla,Nvidia(NVDA), Visa, and JPMorgan Chase(JPM), each of which are worth at least $400 billion.Shopify(SHOP) got a less obvious mention. The company is way down the market-value rank at $182 billion. It has become something of the anti-Amazon,providing bricks-and-mortar vendors and other businesses with easy e-commerce tools. While Amazon.com(AMZN) seeks to fend off regulation and a potential breakup, Shopify can keep its head down and continue to recruit new business.\nI’ll place my bets on Visa getting to $1 trillion next, even if it takes a while. The company is closely tied to the economic recovery, since it gets a cut of transactions that run through its global electronic-payments network.\nThe business, which is part tech and part financial services, has a long tailwind as cash usage declines around the world. Visa shares have returned an annualized 28% over the past decade. If that pattern holds, Visa would reach $1 trillion by 2024.\nWhile the next trillion-dollar stock is clearly a guessing game, one thing is clear: Large numbers have been no impediment to future gains.Apple(AAPL) has returned an annualized 44% since it became the first U.S.-listed company to reach a $1 trillion value in August 2018. The stock closed at a record this past week, giving it a market value of $2.4 trillion.\n\nI asked Denise Chisholm, Fidelity’s sector strategist, if the so-called law of large numbers would ever kick in. “Size is not particularly predictive one way or the other,” she says. “The S&P information technology, as a percent of overall S&P, is now in excess of 20%. Does that have any meaning on whether or not that group or that sector can outperform in the future? The answer really is no.”\nRight now, the trillion-dollar members have momentum on their side. “A ball in motion tends to stay in motion,” she says.\nTech’s secret sauce has been continuously expanding profit margins, with valuations that are essentially in line with their historic norms. Operating margins for the S&P 500’s information technology sector have doubled in the past 15 years, to a recent 21%, according to Yardeni Research, while overall S&P 500 margins have been static at 10% or so (excluding a collapse during the financial crisis).\nTech’s magic—and those trillion-dollar club passes—are now hitting up against the increased likelihood of regulation. “The sheer fact of the headline of the trillion-dollar club is going to bring even more regulation,” says Jim Paulsen, chief investment officer of The Leuthold Group.\nOn Friday, the Biden administration signed an executive order that calls for a “whole-of-government effort to promote competition in the American economy.” The order, which consists of 72 initiatives, is simultaneously broad and narrow. It pushes against consolidation while also addressing consumer pain points, like early-termination fees for broadband services, hard-to-fix consumer devices, and airline baggage fees.\nBy now, the Biden administration recognizes that tech regulation isn’t a slam dunk with the public. Despite unease around data and privacy practices, less than half of U.S. adults are in favor of more tech regulation, according to a 2020 Pew Research poll.\nA room at the F8 Developers Conference in San Jose, Calif.\nPrivacy regulation is politically complicated, especially if it means reining in the advertising that enables free services like social media, internet search, and email. But there isn’t much controversial about limiting broadband charges or making it easier to fix a smartphone battery. Lancz &amp; Associates Inc, an investment advisory firm based in Toledo, Ohio.</p>\n<p>Right after the Fed statement, the S&amp;P 500 index reversed slight declines though it still ended a hair lower on the day.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ISBC\">Investors</a> have been worried about how rising inflation and a spike in COVID-19 cases might impact the central bank’s plan to potentially start withdrawing its stimulus.</p>\n<p>The central bank also said that higher inflation remained the result of “transitory factors.” The Fed kept its overnight benchmark interest rate near zero and left unchanged its bond-buying program.</p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NDAQ\">Nasdaq</a> ended higher and shares of Google parent <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GOOG\">Alphabet</a> Inc hit an all-time high as a surge in advertising spending helped it post record quarterly results. Lancz & Associates Inc, an investment advisory firm based in Toledo, Ohio.\nRight after the Fed statement, the S&P 500 index reversed slight declines though it still ended a hair lower on the day.\nInvestors have been worried about how rising inflation and a spike in COVID-19 cases might impact the central bank’s plan to potentially start withdrawing its stimulus.\nThe central bank also said that higher inflation remained the result of “transitory factors.” The Fed kept its overnight benchmark interest rate near zero and left unchanged its bond-buying program.\nThe Nasdaq ended higher and shares of Google parent Alphabet Inc hit an all-time high as a surge in advertising spending helped it post record quarterly results. It initially offered DVD rentals by mail, then expanded that model into a subscription service, and accumulated five million members by 2006.</p>\n<p>Netflix launched its first streaming platform in 2007, which was subsequently offered on gaming consoles, set-top boxes, and Blu-ray players. It also launched its service internationally.</p>\n<p>That expansion boosted Netflix's audience to 25 million members by 2012. A year later it launched its first slate of original shows -- including&nbsp;<i>Orange is the New Blac</i>k,<i>House of Cards</i>, and&nbsp;<i>Hemlock Grove</i>-- to lock in its subscribers and reduce its dependence on licensed content.</p>\n<p>Netflix hit 50 million members in 2014, 100 million members in 2017, and 209.2 million members in its latest quarter. That massive audience makes it the world's largest paid video streaming platform.</p>\n<p>Between 2010 and 2020, Netflix's annual revenue rose from $2.16 billion to $25.0 billion. Its net income surged from $161 million to $2.76 billion.</p>\n<p><b>The challenges ahead...</b></p>\n<p>Netflix still enjoys a first-mover's advantage in premium streaming videos, but it currently faces a growing list of formidable competitors. The biggest threat is&nbsp;<b>Disney</b>(NYSE:DIS), which owns a massive portfolio of first-party content and offers its services at lower prices than Netflix.</p>\n<p>Disney+, the company's flagship platform, has already accumulated nearly 104 million subscribers since its launch in late 2019. By comparison, it took Netflix's streaming platform<i>ten years</i>to hit 100 million subscribers. Hulu hosts more mature content than Disney+, while ESPN+ streams live sports -- a frequently requested feature that Netflix still doesn't offer.</p>\n<p>Other challengers include Amazon's Prime Video,<b>AT&amp;T</b>'s HBO Max, Apple TV+, and stand-alone streaming services from traditional TV networks. This ongoing fragmentation of the streaming market could limit Netflix's pricing power, make it more difficult to gain new subscribers, and force it to spend even more money on expensive original shows and movies to retain its existing audience.</p>\n<p>Netflix has already been exploring new ways to differentiate its platform. It's licensing more anime content and expanding its children's programming, and it even launched an&nbsp;online store&nbsp;to sell tie-in merchandise. It's also planning to expand into&nbsp;video games&nbsp;by offering free mobile games to subscribers.</p>\n<p><b>The road to $1 trillion</b></p>\n<p>Netflix's stock has rallied about 1,200% over the past decade. But to cross the $1 trillion mark, it needs to more than quadruple in value.</p>\n<p>Analysts expect Netflix's revenue to rise 19% to $29.7 billion this year, then grow 15% to $34.2 billion next year. Netflix's growth will likely decelerate afterwards, for two simple reasons: It's saturating its developed markets like the U.S., and it faces too much competition around the world.</p>\n<p>But let's assume Netflix continues to roll out compelling original content, locks in more users with niche content like anime, and expands its digital ecosystem with video games and online merchandise.</p>\n<p>If Netflix's revenue growth meets analysts' expectations for the next two years and continues growing at an average rate of 10% from 2023 to 2030, it could generate $73.3 billion in annual revenue by the final year. If Netflix is still trading at about eight times sales, it would be worth nearly $600 billion.</p>\n<p>If Netflix grows it revenue at an average rate of 15% from 2023 to 2020, it would generate $104.6 billion in annual revenue by the final year. At eight times sales, it would still fall short of the $1 trillion mark.</p>\n<p>But Netflix's&nbsp;price-to-sales&nbsp;ratio will likely decline if investors think its high-growth days are over, which would result in much lower market caps. Investors should take a look at Netflix's Chinese counterpart&nbsp;<b>iQiyi</b>, which trades at just two times this year's sales and about 30% below its IPO price, to see what happens when a high-growth streaming video platform&nbsp;loses its momentum.</p>\n<p><b>The key takeaways</b></p>\n<p>Netflix's growth over the past decade has been stellar, but much of its success can be attributed to its first-mover's advantage in the streaming market. Apple is worth more than $2 trillion, Amazon and Alphabet are both worth over $1 trillion, and Facebook has a market cap of $955 billion. It initially offered DVD rentals by mail, then expanded that model into a subscription service, and accumulated five million members by 2006.\nNetflix launched its first streaming platform in 2007, which was subsequently offered on gaming consoles, set-top boxes, and Blu-ray players. It also launched its service internationally.\nThat expansion boosted Netflix's audience to 25 million members by 2012. A year later it launched its first slate of original shows -- including Orange is the New Black,House of Cards, and Hemlock Grove-- to lock in its subscribers and reduce its dependence on licensed content.\nNetflix hit 50 million members in 2014, 100 million members in 2017, and 209.2 million members in its latest quarter. That massive audience makes it the world's largest paid video streaming platform.\nBetween 2010 and 2020, Netflix's annual revenue rose from $2.16 billion to $25.0 billion. Its net income surged from $161 million to $2.76 billion.\nThe challenges ahead...\nNetflix still enjoys a first-mover's advantage in premium streaming videos, but it currently faces a growing list of formidable competitors. The biggest threat is Disney(NYSE:DIS), which owns a massive portfolio of first-party content and offers its services at lower prices than Netflix.\nDisney+, the company's flagship platform, has already accumulated nearly 104 million subscribers since its launch in late 2019. But to cross the $1 trillion mark, it needs to more than quadruple in value.\nAnalysts expect Netflix's revenue to rise 19% to $29.7 billion this year, then grow 15% to $34.2 billion next year. Netflix's growth will likely decelerate afterwards, for two simple reasons: It's saturating its developed markets like the U.S., and it faces too much competition around the world.\nBut let's assume Netflix continues to roll out compelling original content, locks in more users with niche content like anime, and expands its digital ecosystem with video games and online merchandise.\nIf Netflix's revenue growth meets analysts' expectations for the next two years and continues growing at an average rate of 10% from 2023 to 2030, it could generate $73.3 billion in annual revenue by the final year. If Netflix is still trading at about eight times sales, it would be worth nearly $600 billion.\nIf Netflix grows it revenue at an average rate of 15% from 2023 to 2020, it would generate $104.6 billion in annual revenue by the final year. At eight times sales, it would still fall short of the $1 trillion mark.\nBut Netflix's price-to-sales ratio will likely decline if investors think its high-growth days are over, which would result in much lower market caps.
