Here is what supports his bullish thesis.\n
\n
Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, whom the Apple Maven interviewed a few weeks ago, is not letting off the gas. In his opinion, Apple stock-Get Apple Inc. (AAPL) Report will be valued at $3 trillion within the next six to nine months – thus becoming the first company to ever reach this valuation milestone.
\n
The Apple Maven reviews Mr. Ives’ bullish thesis and the key factors that support it. Lastly, I present one rare instance in which I disagree with the Wedbush analyst.
\n
It starts with the super cycle
\n
During his interview with Bloomberg, Dan Ives explained why Apple stock should be worth $3 trillion soon, up 18% from $2.55 trillion today. At the core of the bullish case is what the analyst calls the “elongated iPhone super cycle”.
\n
In my conversation with Dan, he explained that Wall Street underestimates the depth of the upgrade cycle that the iPhone 12 has merely kickstarted. Rather than one wave, he sees multiple iterations of smartphone users buying Apple’s new devices over the next few years. His quote:
\n
\n “If you look at it, we still have 25% of the base that has not upgraded their iPhones in the last three and a half years. 5G does not get fully embraced for the next two or three years, until the networks are built out. In China [where the 5G infrastructure is further ahead], the iPhone 12, especially the larger Pro versions, really sold extremely well.”\n
\n
Services and innovation
\n
But not all is about iPhone sales upside. Dan also mentioned two other important factors that support his bullishness: services and technological innovations.
\n
On the former, the analyst believes that this massive segment, which produces $65 billion in revenues per year and grows at a pace of 20%-plus, is worth $1.4 trillion. The 20x implied price-to-sales valuation may seem too rich, but less so if one considers the enviable 65% op margins and solid growth prospects.
\n
Regarding the latter, Dan points out that Apple continues to impress on the technological innovation front – something that has not been left in the rearview mirror, as some skeptics believe. I agree with this take, especially ahead of two likely product launches in the next five years:mixed-reality headsetsandthe Apple Car.
\n
On the App Store risk
\n
I tend to agree with Dan Ives on most of the arguments that he makes about Apple and its stock. However, in my view, he does not seem worried enough about the risks associated with the App Store and the scrutiny around Apple’s highly lucrative app platform.
\n
Dan certainly recognizes the regulatory challenges. However, he sees the consequences leaning more towards fines rather than business model changes. He thinks that the risk to the 30% App Store fee is seen as contained by investors, which seems evident in lack of share price pressures as of late.
\n
I, on the other hand, believe that the business model changesare already underway. The key question in my mind is not if there will be a negative impact, but to what extent. I believe only time will answer this question with any accuracy, starting with Apple’s fiscal Q4 earnings report and fiscal Q1 guidance to be released in October.
\n
Twitter speaks
\n
The most bullish of Apple analysts thinks that AAPL will be valued at $3 trillion within the next 6 to 9 months. How likely do you think that this price target will materialize within this time frame?
\n

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Apple reached record high in early trading, $3 Trillion Is Next, Says This Expert
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nApple reached record high in early trading, $3 Trillion Is Next, Says This Expert\n
\n\n
\n\n\n\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Tiger Newspress
\n
2021-09-07 21:48
\n
\n\n\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
(Sept 7) Apple reached record high in early trading.
\n

\n
\n Wedbush’s Dan Ives has made a bold prediction: Apple stock will be valued at $3 trillion within six to nine months. In fact, I wrote a very bullish piece about six weeks ago, detailing how I thought Apple was in the process of consolidating before a big breakout. In this article, I want to update readers on the progress of that, as well as addressing some concerns that could be potentially bearish. But the spoiler alert is that I’m still very much in the camp of Apple setting up a breakout, and I think the company’s typical pre-earnings move is likely the catalyst to see that happen.
\n
Source: StockCharts
\n
To start, I’ve annotated the same ascending triangle formation I noted six weeks ago, because it is still very much in play. The stock is very near the top of the triangle today, so what happens when/if it gets to $136/$137 will determine if the breakout is imminent or if we need at least one more test of the rising trend line that forms the bottom of the triangle. Whether that occurs or not doesn’t change my outlook; only the timing of it.
\n
Ascending triangles measure upside targets on breakouts equal to the top and bottom of the widest part of the triangle. In this case, the top of the triangle is $137 and the bottom of the triangle, which was set in September of last year, was $102. That means that this triangle pattern has a measured price target – after the breakout – of $35 higher ($137 minus $102), and with the breakout point being $137 or so, that implies we canexpect Apple to hit $172, give or take. Now, that won’t happen immediately, of course, but that’s the kind of opportunity at hand here.
\n
What do you need to look for on a breakout? First, price action needs to decisively clear the breakout level of $137 and close above it. In addition, you want to see rising volume on the breakout – I’ve annotated declining volume in the triangle period, which is normal behavior – and you want to see rising momentum, we’ve got rising momentum today. So I’d expect a breakout to continue that, but these are the things you want to see on a breakout to ensure it has staying power.
\n
Finally, you’ll notice that I’ve added blue circles on the chart, and those represent the start of the ~4-week period prior to an earnings release. Apple has beenveryreliable in the past couple of years in terms of rallying into an earnings report, and I have no reason to think that will change. The gains are fairly large in most cases, with about half of them being in the double-digits, so this is a real catalyst for higher prices.
\n
The important thing to note is that we are about four weeks from the third quarter report, which typically takes place at the end of July. We are also at the top of the ascending triangle, which means that even a small pre-earnings run will likely result in a breakout, and that’s why I think the breakout is very near.
\n
To be clear, I’m reiterating my prior thesis that an ascending triangle breakout is coming; I just think we have a very clear catalyst now to make it sooner than later. I see the stock rallying into the earnings report, and if history is a guide, Apple will destroy expectations once again. In short, all is going to plan.
\n
The risk is that if Apple does break out of the triangle and earnings aren’t very good, the pattern could fail. That would negate my $172 price target, and we’d have to reassess. For now, the odds of that look low, and I’m still full steam ahead on the breakout coming pre-earnings.
\n
Why does Apple rally pre-earnings?
\n
To put it succinctly, Apple rallies pre-earnings because no matter how much analysts raise their targets going into the reports, Apple finds a way to beat them.
\n
Source:Seeking Alpha
\n
This is three years’ worth of data showing how Apple beats expectations, and by enormous margins in some cases. Apple is one of the largest and most-followed companies that has ever existed. So if any company should have an analyst community that knows how it will perform each quarter, it would be this one. However, its dominance in hardware and services revenue has proven too much for analysts over time to keep up with.
\n
Keep in mind a risk here is that if Apple does finally miss expectations, I have to imagine the stock will react extremely poorly. Thus, there is certainly risk in owning Apple through the earnings report, as with any other stock. But the company’s history of smashing expectations – particularly in the past year – means the odds of this are fairly low. Still, something to keep in mind from a risk perspective.
\n
In terms of a catalyst for rallying into the July report, Apple continues to see analysts scramble to keep up with its rising fortunes.
\n
Source:Seeking Alpha
\n
The sharp upward revisions that began last summer continue unabated, and Apple’s earnings trajectory remains very much intact. I detailed this in my last piece so I’m simply saying that nothing has changed on this front, and that’s a very good thing.
\n
Source:Seeking Alpha
\n
I think you’ll struggle to find a company with a better earnings revision schedule, as the past three months have seen 36 EPS revisions, and100%of them were upward. That shows just how strong Apple’s earnings trajectory is, as analysts scramble to meet Apple’s outstanding performances. I love stocks with earnings revision charts like Apple’s because the bar is always rising, which means that the stock will follow suit.
\n
Not all is well
\n
Apple, to be fair, does face a huge amount of risks that are outside of its control. Many of them cropped up since my last report on Apple and so I want to balance my bullish position on the stock with some sobering reality to ensure readers are well-equipped to make an informed decision about whether or not Apple is right for their portfolio.
\n
First, the FTC made the headlines a few weeks ago by appointing Lina Khan, an outspoken and noted big tech critic, who feels certain companies have too much control over the behaviors of consumers. This is a noteworthy development because if the FTC wants to go after big tech, Apple is a very logical early target. I don’t see it impacting iPhone or other hardware sales but services revenue? Absolutely. This is a longer-term threat since antitrust rules take time to create, but Apple shareholders need to take this threat seriously.
\n
The White Houseis apparently on board with this line of thinking, and the House is actually considering legislation that would undertake to reign in the perceived control of big tech companies, including Apple's tendency to pre-install its own apps on Apple devices. Would that stop consumers from just going to the app store and downloading them? No, but it certainly isn't apositive catalyst.
\n
Apple is facing a similar threat in Germany and other places in the developed world, so it isn’t just a problem at home. Germany is assessing if Apple has “competition violations” to be addressed. So the issue is the same one being faced in the US, and the only two outcomes are neutral (nothing happens), or negative (antitrust action is taken).
\n
Apple is also still very much beholden to the never-ending trade war between China and the US, as the two countries constantly jockey for position with the highest stakes the world has ever seen in such a scuffle. Apple’s production process is potentially at risk, depending upon how ugly things get, adding some geopolitical risk to the stock's outlook. This goes both ways, and China employs a lot of people and generates a lot of cash from Apple’s production. So I’m not sure it is as one-sided as it seems, but the geopolitical risk is never a good thing, and Apple’s manufacturing needs set it up for such a risk.
\n
Final thoughts
\n
I’ve enumerated a variety of potential issues Apple is facing, and I’ll be clear and say none of these are good things. The best possible outcome is that nothing changes, and the worst is that all come to fruition and Apple faces manufacturing challenges, as well as antitrust actions. These are real threats, but I also think they're already priced in.
\n
The threat of antitrust legislation or a trade war with China isn’t new by any stretch of the imagination and is not dissimilar to the threats that other tech giants like Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet (GOOG), or Facebook (FB) face every day. This is par for the course if you’re a dominant tech company, and Apple certainly is. I don’t want to ignore these potential negative catalysts, but I don’t want to overreact, either.
\n
Keep in mind also that Apple continues to move higher over time despite this bad news, which is what winning stocks do. The fact that it is shrugging off these huge potential negative catalysts reinforces the bullish stance I already had on the stock.
\n
I detailed my bullishness on the company’s revenue generation, margins, buybacks, valuation, and more in the prior piece, and nothing has changed there. So I don’t want to waste your time going through it again. However, my fundamental stance on Apple hasn’t changed in the past six weeks, and if anything, continued upward revisions in EPS estimates have strengthened the bull case.
\n
The important thing is that shareholders must be aware of external threats, but also that we are seeing Apple get to the end of its very bullish consolidation pattern at the same time that it typically begins a pre-earnings run higher.
\n
The bottom line is that I think Apple’s breakout is imminent, and that the pattern measures to $172 or so. This won’t happen overnight, but if you were looking to buy Apple, act quickly.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":275,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":169460357,"gmtCreate":1623847660379,"gmtModify":1703821241767,"author":{"id":"3578565623520596","authorId":"3578565623520596","name":"AllyLeong","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f8a5f2b238dc0e683b344a70d1e754e5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578565623520596","authorIdStr":"3578565623520596"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good","listText":"Good","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/169460357","repostId":"2143198799","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2143198799","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"T-Reuters","id":"1086160438","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a113a995fbbc262262d15a5ce37e7bc5"},"pubTimestamp":1623845470,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2143198799?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-06-16 20:11","market":"us","language":"en","title":"1847 Goedeker Continues Strong Q2 Performance With Record Revenue Up 41.9% In May","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2143198799","media":"T-Reuters","summary":"1847 Goedeker Inc:1847 Goedeker Continues Strong Q2 Performance With Record Revenue Up 41.9% In May ","content":"
1847 Goedeker Inc:1847 Goedeker Continues Strong Q2 Performance With Record Revenue Up 41.9% In May To $44.3M On A Combined Proforma Basis.1847 Goedeker Inc - Continue To Operate At More Than A $500 Million Annual Revenue Run Rate Through May.1847 Goedeker - Continue To Believe We Will See A Return To Normal Shipping Trends As Manufacturers Catch Production Up To Demand In Latter Part Of Q3.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Or he can pocket the annual equivalent of a 20% yield for locking money up in one of the wilder corners of the crypto market, known as decentralized finance, or DeFi.
\n
He decided to go for the 20%. “You can’t get those yields in the traditional space,” says the co-founder of Swiss-based St. Gotthard Fund Management, which runs a portfolio designed to squeeze income out of crypto assets. The strategy is so new that even Wall Street pros may have trouble wrapping their heads around it. Take what you might know about Bitcoin—that it’s a digital currency that exists only on an online ledger governed by computer code. Now make it even more mind-bending, and imagine the code isn’t just recording transactions. It’s running lending platforms, insurers and financial markets with little human intermediation. That’sDeFi.
\n
Traders like Vishnevskiy can collect yields by committing in the form of crypto tokens the capital that’s needed to make these disembodied and largely unregulated financial institutions run. At the peak last month, investors put in as much as $86 billion into various DeFi programs, compared with just under $1 billion a year ago, DeFi Pulse data show.
\n
It’s a young, volatile, and hack-prone system. (One of the first decentralized projects, a fund called the DAO, was the victim of aspectacular $55 million theftby someone taking advantage of a flaw in its code to siphon off funds.) And for now, it’s mostly a crypto world built for thecrypto universe. The decentralized lenders are largely taking crypto deposits to make loans to people looking for leverage on crypto bets; the decentralized exchanges are used for trading crypto coins; the decentralized insurers cover crypto hacks.
\n
The big yields investors can earn are denominated not in dollars or euros but in often-obscure tokens. Critics of DeFi say some projects can resemble a Ponzi scheme: Early investors depend on others piling into tokens that still have limited real-world utility. If returns are high, it’s largely because of investors’ voracious appetite for more digital assets. And since DeFi projects don’t need to live in any physical location, they’re difficult to regulate, making the space vulnerable to scams and money laundering schemes. Still, DeFi’s advocates think the technology has the power to open up markets and build new kinds of financial products.
\n
To see how a DeFi program works, look atSushiSwap, a decentralized cryptocurrency exchange that started last year. It’s based on the code of another DeFi exchange calledUniswap. Like any exchange—from better-known crypto trading apps such asCoinbaseto stock markets likeNasdaq—SushiSwap depends on liquidity, or the ability to make sure buyers can find the tokens they want and sellers can get a price they think is fair. To do that in a decentralized way, SushiSwap creates liquidity pools that pair any two coins that traders might want to swap—for example, Ethereum, thesecond-most-popular cryptocurrencyand DeFi’s backbone, and the exchange’s own token, Sushi.
\n
Investors like Vishnevskiy buy both tokens and then temporarily lock them into the pool, where they’re available to traders. An algorithm adjusts prices of both tokens to reflect relative changes in demand. The exchange also charges a fee for trading. When Vishnevskiy gets his tokens back, he also gets a portion of the fees generated from transactions made in the pool, as well as free additional Sushi tokens. (The added Sushi tokens can be earned on other trading pairs, not only those involving Sushi.) That, the exchange’s software surmises, amounts to an annualized 20% yield.
\n
Other DeFi protocols may pay yields to people who make their crypto available for someone else to borrow. For example, traders might want to borrowstablecoins—tokens whose value is linked to that of a traditional currency such as the dollar—to buy more Bitcoin on platforms that don’t take traditional currencies.
\n
If that sounds complicated, it is. Yields in DeFi are mostly projected from recent market trends and could drop quickly. Some investors who call themselves yield farmers are constantly moving their money trying to generate income, but crypto transaction costs called “gas” fees can eat up profits. Moreover, the cryptocurrencies these yields get paid in can fluctuate wildly in value. When Bitcoin slid as much as 10% on one recent day, popular DeFi coins such as Uniswap’s fell almost 20%.
\n
Other risks that come with any cryptocurrency still apply:Regulatory scrutinywill probably grow, which might shut down or hamper some projects and blow up the value of associated tokens. Founders of DeFi projects who’ve hoarded the coins created to run them could suddenly cash out, causing prices to drop. SushiSwap’s pseudonymous creator, Chef Nomi, sold tokens worth roughly $13 million in September before reversing course amid community outrage.
\n
“You can’t get those yields in the traditional space”
\n
The history of crypto is filled with cautionary tales about investments riding a wave of hype and then falling apart. Around 2018, so-called initial coin offerings raised billions of dollars for projects, most of which turned out to be duds. DeFi converts say the difference now is that applications such as exchanges and lenders are generating revenue, even if just from crypto speculation. Uniswap, which announces its user statistics in real time, had trading volume of $813 million in one recent 24-hour period, generating $1.8 million in fees for those staking their tokens in its liquidity pool.
\n
What about the value of the tokens many DeFi projects give out? These coins aren’t exactly equity and don’t always confer any direct claim to profits. Often they give holders voting rights on the future of the project; investors may be hoping that as the protocols they’re associated with grow in popularity, so will the coins. But some DeFi platforms might not be as successful as they seem. Aleksander Kloda, who co-manages a DeFi fund at Nickel Digital Asset Management, says participation may be driven less by the value of a service than by the promise of free tokens. “In the short term, they can really make the picture a lot more difficult to read,” he says. “The logic is not quite correct if the volumes are only there because of the additional motivation the protocol gives you to participate.” As an investor, he tries to identify projects that have built up sustainable volume even without tantalizing yields.
\n
Advocates of DeFi say the idea is still in its infancy, and it could eventually broaden its uses and reach into more traditional areas of finance. Their dream is a financial system run on the internet that doesn’t involve a credit officer at a JPMorgan branch, or a Citadel Securities investing in high-frequency infrastructure tokeep stock trading liquid.
\n
But Elaine Ou, a blockchain engineer at Global Financial Access, argues there’s nothing wrong with DeFi being used only for crypto trading, either. “Look at Vegas and Macau—part of the reason they’re so valuable is that they allow you to do what other jurisdictions have banned,” says Ou, who alsowritesfor Bloomberg Opinion. “It is possible to build an entire industry up around speculation.”
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Crypto Die-Hards Built a $90 Billion Wall Street on the Internet
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nCrypto Die-Hards Built a $90 Billion Wall Street on the Internet\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-06-16 19:49 GMT+8 .bloomberg\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Money manager Vladimir Vishnevskiy can earn anegative interest ratefor holding a European government bond. Their dream is a financial system run on the internet that doesn’t involve a credit officer at a JPMorgan branch, or a Citadel Securities investing in high-frequency infrastructure tokeep stock trading liquid.\nBut Elaine Ou, a blockchain engineer at Global Financial Access, argues there’s nothing wrong with DeFi being used only for crypto trading, either. “Look at Vegas and Macau—part of the reason they’re so valuable is that they allow you to do what other jurisdictions have banned,” says Ou, who alsowritesfor Bloomberg Opinion. “It is possible to build an entire industry up around speculation.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":325,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":169482626,"gmtCreate":1623847514965,"gmtModify":1703821235843,"author":{"id":"3578565623520596","authorId":"3578565623520596","name":"AllyLeong","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f8a5f2b238dc0e683b344a70d1e754e5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578565623520596","authorIdStr":"3578565623520596"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Alfi Inc.(ALF)$Will it go up or down today?","listText":"$Alfi Inc.(ALF)$Will it go up or down today?","text":"$Alfi Inc.(ALF)$Will it go up or down today?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/169482626","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":313,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":169488993,"gmtCreate":1623847442612,"gmtModify":1703821231901,"author":{"id":"3578565623520596","authorId":"3578565623520596","name":"AllyLeong","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f8a5f2b238dc0e683b344a70d1e754e5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578565623520596","authorIdStr":"3578565623520596"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"I’m waiting","listText":"I’m waiting","text":"I’m waiting","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/169488993","repostId":"1184454883","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":244,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":169481383,"gmtCreate":1623847418642,"gmtModify":1703821230756,"author":{"id":"3578565623520596","authorId":"3578565623520596","name":"AllyLeong","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f8a5f2b238dc0e683b344a70d1e754e5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578565623520596","authorIdStr":"3578565623520596"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Another direction to follow","listText":"Another direction to follow","text":"Another direction to follow","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/169481383","repostId":"1170999861","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1170999861","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"为用户提供金融资讯、行情、数据,旨在帮助投资者理解世界,做投资决策。"
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The next day, a plan to sell 11.55 million shares (which eventually sold at an average price of $50.85) sent AMC (ticker: AMC) tumbling.
\n
Even with Thursday’s decline, the stock has soared 297% over the past nine trading sessions, and is up an eye-popping 2,160% for the year.
\n
After GameStop(GME) and BlackBerry(BB), there seems to be little stopping the latest hot meme stock, not even a warning from AMC itself: “Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our Class A common stock, unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment,” the company said on Thursday in the filing to sell the shares.
\n
Earlier in the week, AMC sold 8.5 million shares to investment firm Mudrick Capital Management, which sold its stake at a profit that same day,Bloomberg reported. AMC called it a “very smart raising of cash so that we can grow this company.”
\n
More dilution could be coming. The company will ask shareholders to authorize the sale of an additional 25 million shares, starting in 2022, at its annual meeting next month.
\n
Despite the unusual warning and the dilution, some users doubled down on their enthusiasm for the stock in online forums this past week, noting that GameStop experienced similar volatility during its January rise. That just confounds and outrages traditional investors.
\n
“The surge in shares of AMC Entertainment is yet another sign of the reckless meme-stock-driven investing landscape that we find ourselves in today,” David Trainer, CEO of investment research firm New Constructs, recently wrote. “Wall Street insiders are preying on the naiveté of retail meme-stock traders. There is no fundamental reason to be buying shares of AMC Entertainment.”
\n
Trying to identify a fundamental narrative that can justify AMC’s ascent is admittedly difficult. Still, it is an exercise that might provide some insights for investors.
\n

\n
With the recent share sale, AMC has an enterprise value of about $35 billion, almost six times what it was at the end of 2018, a record-breaking year at the U.S. box office. At that time, the enterprise value for the three largest publicly traded theater operators was about 1.6 times the total domestic box office. (Theater chains typically have a lot of debt, making enterprise value a better measure.)
\n
AMC’s enterprise value is now about 17 times the dreadful, pandemic-affected domestic box office haul of just $2.1 billion in 2020.
\n
Roughly two-thirds of sales typically come from tickets. The rest comes from soda and, yes, popcorn. The challenge for the industry is whether enough moviegoers return and spend as they did before, after a year of staying home and streaming.
\n
The business might go through a period of consolidation, as it did earlier this century, when a shift to stadium seating pushed some operators into bankruptcy and mergers. Regal Cinemas, one of the large U.S. theater chains, filed for bankruptcy in 2001. Coming out of bankruptcy, Regal became a cash-generating machine—fewer movie-theater operators helped. And fewer now could usher in another era of higher returns on investment and better cash generation.
\n
Indeed, the hope is that AMC could be opportunistic in the postpandemic world, perhaps by making acquisitions. The recent gains in the stock have made that hope self-fulfilling, allowing the company to raise new capital—$1.25 billion through stock sales in this quarter alone.
\n
“With our increased liquidity, an increasingly vaccinated population, and the imminent release of blockbuster new movie titles, it is time for AMC to go on the offense again,” CEO Adam Aron said this past Tuesday.
\n
If AMC can boost market share, and if U.S. box office sales return to 2018 levels, the company’s total sales might hit $9 billion—$6 billion from tickets and $3 billion from concessions. Sales in 2018 were $5.5 billion.
\n
Then, if profit margins improve with better industry scale, and if AMC’s investment in new theaters can drop as new capacity isn’t really needed, the company might be able to generate $600 million in free cash flow annually. That is about three times the cash-generating potential of prior, prepandemic years.
\n
With $600 million in free cash flow, the stock’s free-cash-flow yield works out to about 2.4%, based on recent prices. That yield makes the stock look expensive, but not completely unreasonable. The S&P 500 index trades for about a 3.4% free-cash-flow yield; other consumer-discretionary stocks in the S&P trade at a free-cash-flow yield of about 3.1%.
\n
While that may offer a faint glimmer of hope for fundamental investors, there are problems with the $600 million free-cash-flow scenario. There are a lot of ifs and mights—and AMC has never generated cash flow like that in the past.
\n
Consolidation in the industry is also no guarantee of success. AMC’s share of the market might rise, but there are still competitors: Regal Cinemas, now owned by Cineworld Group(CINE.UK), and Cinemark Holdings(CNK).
\n
Neither one is trading like AMC: Cineworld stock is up 283% from its 52-week low, but is off 78% from all-time highs, while Cinemark shares are up 183% from their 52-week low, but down 51% from their all-time high. AMC stock, by comparison, is up 2,320% from its 52-week low.
\n
And AMC and its peers also have to compete with streaming. Windows for exclusive theater showings are shrinking, and the pandemic has accelerated that.
\n
Wall Street doesn’t see the potential. Ten analysts cover the stock, and the average price target is $5.25. The highest is $18 a share. Before the pandemic, the average analyst price target was $15. There were fewer shares of AMC at the time. The next day, a plan to sell 11.55 million shares (which eventually sold at an average price of $50.85) sent AMC (ticker: AMC) tumbling.\nEven with Thursday’s decline, the stock has soared 297% over the past nine trading sessions, and is up an eye-popping 2,160% for the year.\nAfter GameStop(GME) and BlackBerry(BB), there seems to be little stopping the latest hot meme stock, not even a warning from AMC itself: “Under the circumstances, we caution you against investing in our Class A common stock, unless you are prepared to incur the risk of losing all or a substantial portion of your investment,” the company said on Thursday in the filing to sell the shares.\nEarlier in the week, AMC sold 8.5 million shares to investment firm Mudrick Capital Management, which sold its stake at a profit that same day,Bloomberg reported. AMC called it a “very smart raising of cash so that we can grow this company.”\nMore dilution could be coming. The company will ask shareholders to authorize the sale of an additional 25 million shares, starting in 2022, at its annual meeting next month.\nDespite the unusual warning and the dilution, some users doubled down on their enthusiasm for the stock in online forums this past week, noting that GameStop experienced similar volatility during its January rise. That just confounds and outrages traditional investors.\n“The surge in shares of AMC Entertainment is yet another sign of the reckless meme-stock-driven investing landscape that we find ourselves in today,” David Trainer, CEO of investment research firm New Constructs, recently wrote. “Wall Street insiders are preying on the naiveté of retail meme-stock traders. There is no fundamental reason to be buying shares of AMC Entertainment.”\nTrying to identify a fundamental narrative that can justify AMC’s ascent is admittedly difficult. Still, it is an exercise that might provide some insights for investors.\n\nWith the recent share sale, AMC has an enterprise value of about $35 billion, almost six times what it was at the end of 2018, a record-breaking year at the U.S. box office. At that time, the enterprise value for the three largest publicly traded theater operators was about 1.6 times the total domestic box office. (Theater chains typically have a lot of debt, making enterprise value a better measure.)\nAMC’s enterprise value is now about 17 times the dreadful, pandemic-affected domestic box office haul of just $2.1 billion in 2020.\nRoughly two-thirds of sales typically come from tickets. The rest comes from soda and, yes, popcorn. The challenge for the industry is whether enough moviegoers return and spend as they did before, after a year of staying home and streaming.\nThe business might go through a period of consolidation, as it did earlier this century, when a shift to stadium seating pushed some operators into bankruptcy and mergers. Regal Cinemas, one of the large U.S. theater chains, filed for bankruptcy in 2001. Coming out of bankruptcy, Regal became a cash-generating machine—fewer movie-theater operators helped. And fewer now could usher in another era of higher returns on investment and better cash generation.\nIndeed, the hope is that AMC could be opportunistic in the postpandemic world, perhaps by making acquisitions. The recent gains in the stock have made that hope self-fulfilling, allowing the company to raise new capital—$1.25 billion through stock sales in this quarter alone.\n“With our increased liquidity, an increasingly vaccinated population, and the imminent release of blockbuster new movie titles, it is time for AMC to go on the offense again,” CEO Adam Aron said this past Tuesday.\nIf AMC can boost market share, and if U.S. box office sales return to 2018 levels, the company’s total sales might hit $9 billion—$6 billion from tickets and $3 billion from concessions. Sales in 2018 were $5.5 billion.\nThen, if profit margins improve with better industry scale, and if AMC’s investment in new theaters can drop as new capacity isn’t really needed, the company might be able to generate $600 million in free cash flow annually. That is about three times the cash-generating potential of prior, prepandemic years.\nWith $600 million in free cash flow, the stock’s free-cash-flow yield works out to about 2.4%, based on recent prices. That yield makes the stock look expensive, but not completely unreasonable. The S&P 500 index trades for about a 3.4% free-cash-flow yield; other consumer-discretionary stocks in the S&P trade at a free-cash-flow yield of about 3.1%.\nWhile that may offer a faint glimmer of hope for fundamental investors, there are problems with the $600 million free-cash-flow scenario. There are a lot of ifs and mights—and AMC has never generated cash flow like that in the past.\nConsolidation in the industry is also no guarantee of success. AMC’s share of the market might rise, but there are still competitors: Regal Cinemas, now owned by Cineworld Group(CINE.UK), and Cinemark Holdings(CNK).\nNeither one is trading like AMC: Cineworld stock is up 283% from its 52-week low, but is off 78% from all-time highs, while Cinemark shares are up 183% from their 52-week low, but down 51% from their all-time high. AMC stock, by comparison, is up 2,320% from its 52-week low.\nAnd AMC and its peers also have to compete with streaming. Windows for exclusive theater showings are shrinking, and the pandemic has accelerated that.\nWall Street doesn’t see the potential. Ten analysts cover the stock, and the average price target is $5.25. The highest is $18 a share. Before the pandemic, the average analyst price target was $15. There were fewer shares of AMC at the time. The old target prices implied an enterprise value of roughly $7 billion—a far cry from $35 billion.\nAnalysts do, however, have positive free cash flow projected for AMC in the future—about $13 million in 2022 and $90 million in 2023.\nAt these levels, the fundamental case for AMC stock is, to put it mildly, a stretch. Yet overvaluation alone is never a good reason to sell a stock short, betting on a price decline. High numbers of shares shorted are typically an element in the meme-fueled rises. These days, the risk of short squeezes has become far larger than the potential gain from the market realizing that a stock is too expensive.\nIn the end, investing and trading are different skills. Both can make people money. The important thing is not to confuse the two.\nAMC investors may understand that. “I think that for most of the retail investors that you see buying quote-unquote meme stocks, it really is to prove a point,” says Natalie Camacho, a 27-year-old writer from California’s San Fernando Valley.\nShe says she bought 11 shares of AMC in January for $100 as the meme-stock wave began to build. This places traditional banking and fintech under one umbrella for business finance.\nAccounting rules force Square to log the value of Bitcoin traded, and that skews results. Nonetheless, Bitcoin revenue came in at $4.6 billion in 2020, a nearly ninefold increase from the $516 million reported in 2019. Moreover, in the first quarter of 2021 alone, Bitcoin revenue grew to $3.5 billion, more than eleven times the $308 million from the year-ago quarter.\nFinally, the fact that Q1 2021 revenue amounted to 76% of full-year 2020 revenue shows Bitcoin's rapid growth despite holding no official status. If Bitcoin became the official currency, Square's financial ecosystem combined with Bitcoin trading abilities would arguably make it the most essential fintech stock.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":40,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":112113634,"gmtCreate":1622855343528,"gmtModify":1704192439909,"author":{"id":"3578565623520596","authorId":"3578565623520596","name":"AllyLeong","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f8a5f2b238dc0e683b344a70d1e754e5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578565623520596","authorIdStr":"3578565623520596"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$ChargePoint Holdings Inc.(CHPT)$More to go!!","listText":"$ChargePoint Holdings Inc.(CHPT)$More to go!!","text":"$ChargePoint Holdings Inc.(CHPT)$More to go!!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/112113634","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":157,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":112119681,"gmtCreate":1622855304543,"gmtModify":1704192443196,"author":{"id":"3578565623520596","authorId":"3578565623520596","name":"AllyLeong","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f8a5f2b238dc0e683b344a70d1e754e5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578565623520596","authorIdStr":"3578565623520596"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$XPeng Inc.(XPEV)$It’s coming up!","listText":"$XPeng Inc.(XPEV)$It’s coming up!","text":"$XPeng Inc.(XPEV)$It’s coming up!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/112119681","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":286,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":112137508,"gmtCreate":1622855201004,"gmtModify":1704192437130,"author":{"id":"3578565623520596","authorId":"3578565623520596","name":"AllyLeong","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f8a5f2b238dc0e683b344a70d1e754e5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578565623520596","authorIdStr":"3578565623520596"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$XPeng Inc.(XPEV)$Finally...","listText":"$XPeng Inc.(XPEV)$Finally...","text":"$XPeng Inc.(XPEV)$Finally...","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ea8ff2386b6f3f0a90bbaf50e4b786fb","width":"1170","height":"2026"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/112137508","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":178,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":112134112,"gmtCreate":1622855103736,"gmtModify":1704192435312,"author":{"id":"3578565623520596","authorId":"3578565623520596","name":"AllyLeong","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f8a5f2b238dc0e683b344a70d1e754e5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578565623520596","authorIdStr":"3578565623520596"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$ChargePoint Holdings Inc.(CHPT)$I think it’sgoing to be very good ?","listText":"$ChargePoint Holdings Inc.(CHPT)$I think it’sgoing to be very good ?","text":"$ChargePoint Holdings Inc.(CHPT)$I think it’sgoing to be very good ?","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b6ea33764008a46dee7862c9ca47d867","width":"1170","height":"2026"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/112134112","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":131,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":144862298,"gmtCreate":1626275672514,"gmtModify":1703756991916,"author":{"id":"3578565623520596","authorId":"3578565623520596","name":"AllyLeong","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f8a5f2b238dc0e683b344a70d1e754e5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578565623520596","authorIdStr":"3578565623520596"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Exela Technologies, Inc.(XELA)$Aiyo…don’t panic sell.
