Is this a good sign in the face of multiple headwinds in 2022, or is TSLA ripe for a sharper correction from here?

Has Tesla stockĀ (TSLA)Ā been a good investment? It depends on who you ask. So far in 2022, TSLA has been a loser in absolute terms and relative to most equity benchmarks.

However, looking back a few years, this stock has been one of the best performers among large-cap names. The big question is: will Tesla be able to defend its rich valuations in a year of numerous market headwinds? Or is a sharper decline only a matter of time?

TSLA: impressive performance

Letās start with the chart below. It shows how, so far in 2022, Tesla stock (blue line) has underperformed the tech-rich Nasdaq 100 and the autonomous/electric vehicle peer groupĀ (DRIV). Compared to other high-growth, high-valuation names like those contained in the ARK Innovation ETFĀ (ARKK), however, TSLA has done better.

Figure 2:Tesla stock (blue line) has underperformed the tech-rich Nasdaq 100 and the autonomous/electric vehicle peer group DRIV.

This is not to say, however, that TSLA has been a bad investment in the past several months or couple of years ā quite the opposite, in fact.

This next chart shows how Tesla stock has lavishly outperformed all of the names mentioned above since around the bottom of the COVID-19 bear. The five-year chart (not depicted here) does not look much worse than this.

Figure 3:Tesla stock has lavishly outperformed Nasdaq 100, ARKK and DRIV.

Resilience or correction ahead?

There are two ways to interpret recent price action in Tesla stock. The glass-half-full view is that TSLA has been resilient to this yearās selloff. Considering roughly 90% inĀ annualizedĀ returns between 2017 and 2021, Teslaās 28% YTD dip in 2022 has been fairly small by comparison.

Bulls have business fundamentals reasons to think that Tesla will continue to climb from here, given enough time. The electric vehicle industry is expected to grow aggressively in the next several years: CAGR of 23% through 2027, according toĀ one source.

The Russia-Ukraine crisis and spike in crude oil prices could also be a positive for Tesla in the end. Teslaās products are one answer to the global dependence on hydrocarbons that has caused so much turmoil, including inflationary pressures, in the past few months.

But then, there is the glass-half-empty argument. Tesla stock is still up 77% per year for the past five years, despite all the macroeconomic and geopolitical headwinds. Isnāt it time for shares to de-risk a bit more, as those of so many of Teslaās peers have since early last year?

Supporting this idea are rich valuations. According toĀ Seeking Alpha, Tesla stock commands a very high 2022 P/E of 73 times on earnings growth that is expected to decline to a fairly modest 15% through 2025. Is this multiple justifiable in the current market environment?

2022 will be the moment of truth

Clearly, it is impossible to tell for sure whether the optimistic or the pessimistic views on Tesla stock will prove to be correct in the end. However, Apple is also one of Google's top customers.
\n
Five years ago, Apple signed a deal with Google Cloud to host some of its iCloud services. The details weren't disclosed, but it was considered a loss for Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Azure, which previously hosted most of Apple's iCloud services.
\n
Many people wondered if the deal would last. However, digital media newssite The Information recently claimed Apple would boost its spending on Google Cloud by 50% this year and become Google's largest enterprise cloud storage customer. Let's see what this expanded deal could mean for both tech giants.
\n
\n
Why doesn't Apple build its own cloud platform?
\n
Back in 2016, a Re/code report claimed Apple was mulling the development of its own cloud infrastructure platform and estimated it could break even on its own data centers in \"about three years.\"
\n
That cloud independence would eliminate Apple's dependence on Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, which all compete against Apple in certain markets. It could also support its expansion into next-gen industries, including connected cars, augmented reality devices, and smart home appliances.
\n
However, Apple also has tremendous bargaining power in securing favorable contracts with the big three cloud platforms. Just as it splits its component orders and manufacturing contracts between different companies, Apple can shop around for the best cloud hosting deals.
\n
Apple also charges users fees for additional iCloud storage. So as long as that incoming revenue offsets its cloud hosting payments to Google Cloud, AWS, and Azure, it might be more economical to maintain the status quo instead of building a first-party cloud infrastructure platform.
\n
The Information claims Apple will spend about $300 million on Google's cloud storage services this year -- but that would only equal 0.08% of Apple's estimated revenue this year.
\n
Will higher spending from Apple actually help Google?
\n
Google Cloud's revenue rose 53% to $8.9 billion in 2019 and grew 46% to $13.1 billion -- or 7% of Alphabet's top line -- in 2020. That robust growth was supported by a growing list of customers, including Target, Home Depot, P&G, PayPal, and Twitter.
\n
Many retailers didn't want to feed Amazon's most profitable business unit, while some tech companies didn't want to tether themselves to Microsoft's sprawling software ecosystem. For those enterprise customers, Google Cloud seemed to be an attractive alternative.
\n
However, Google Cloud controlled just 7% of the global cloud infrastructure market in the first quarter of 2021, according to Canalys. AWS controlled 32% of the market, while Azure ranked second with a 19% share.
\n
Google Cloud also isn't profitable yet. Its operating loss widened from $4.3 billion in 2018 to $4.6 billion in 2019, then widened again to $5.6 billion in 2020. AWS is consistently profitable, while Microsoft doesn't disclose Azure's exact revenue or operating profits.
\n
These numbers suggest Apple would likely secure the cheapest cloud hosting rates from Google, which needs to gain more partnerships to keep pace with AWS and Azure. However, Apple is also one of Google's top customers.\nFive years ago, Apple signed a deal with Google Cloud to host some of its iCloud services. The details weren't disclosed, but it was considered a loss for Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Azure, which previously hosted most of Apple's iCloud services.\nMany people wondered if the deal would last. However, digital media newssite The Information recently claimed Apple would boost its spending on Google Cloud by 50% this year and become Google's largest enterprise cloud storage customer. Let's see what this expanded deal could mean for both tech giants.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nWhy doesn't Apple build its own cloud platform?\nBack in 2016, a Re/code report claimed Apple was mulling the development of its own cloud infrastructure platform and estimated it could break even on its own data centers in \"about three years.\"\nThat cloud independence would eliminate Apple's dependence on Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, which all compete against Apple in certain markets. It could also support its expansion into next-gen industries, including connected cars, augmented reality devices, and smart home appliances.\nHowever, Apple also has tremendous bargaining power in securing favorable contracts with the big three cloud platforms. Just as it splits its component orders and manufacturing contracts between different companies, Apple can shop around for the best cloud hosting deals.\nApple also charges users fees for additional iCloud storage. So as long as that incoming revenue offsets its cloud hosting payments to Google Cloud, AWS, and Azure, it might be more economical to maintain the status quo instead of building a first-party cloud infrastructure platform.\nThe Information claims Apple will spend about $300 million on Google's cloud storage services this year -- but that would only equal 0.08% of Apple's estimated revenue this year.\nWill higher spending from Apple actually help Google?\nGoogle Cloud's revenue rose 53% to $8.9 billion in 2019 and grew 46% to $13.1 billion -- or 7% of Alphabet's top line -- in 2020. That robust growth was supported by a growing list of customers, including Target, Home Depot, P&G, PayPal, and Twitter.\nMany retailers didn't want to feed Amazon's most profitable business unit, while some tech companies didn't want to tether themselves to Microsoft's sprawling software ecosystem. For those enterprise customers, Google Cloud seemed to be an attractive alternative.\nHowever, Google Cloud controlled just 7% of the global cloud infrastructure market in the first quarter of 2021, according to Canalys. AWS controlled 32% of the market, while Azure ranked second with a 19% share.\nGoogle Cloud also isn't profitable yet. Its operating loss widened from $4.3 billion in 2018 to $4.6 billion in 2019, then widened again to $5.6 billion in 2020. AWS is consistently profitable, while Microsoft doesn't disclose Azure's exact revenue or operating profits.\nThese numbers suggest Apple would likely secure the cheapest cloud hosting rates from Google, which needs to gain more partnerships to keep pace with AWS and Azure. That might be great news for Apple, but bad news for Google Cloud's operating profits.\nThe key takeaways\nThe Information claims Apple's increased cloud spending could make it Google Cloud's \"largest\" corporate client, but $300 million only equals 2% of Google's total cloud revenue last year. Apple is still likely hosting a lot of its iCloud services on AWS and Azure, so the report doesn't necessarily mean Google Cloud will become Apple's preferred cloud provider.\nInstead, this report indicates it's smarter for Apple to pit the three cloud platform kings against each other to gain favorable hosting prices than it is to build its own cloud infrastructure. It also suggests that Google Cloud -- which likely has significantly less pricing power than AWS and Azure -- could remain unprofitable for the foreseeable future.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":251,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":811702733,"gmtCreate":1630342005422,"gmtModify":1676530276404,"author":{"id":"3578629838146795","authorId":"3578629838146795","name":"hansenwxz","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3578629838146795","authorIdStr":"3578629838146795"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Alibaba(BABA)$?
