Some market participants believe it’s still too soon for the central bank to signal such a tapering action, while others think the Fed will be able to find a happy medium that won’t upset the markets.\nEach scenario has different investing implications as they are expected to make big moves across asset classes.\nHere’s a playbook for traders on every scenario from the central bank’s key meeting.\nIf the Fed signals it’s staying with easy policies\nThe Fed could reiterate its transitory stance on inflation, ignoring the pick-up in price pressures reflected in recent economic data. If the central bank says its not time to remove accommodative policies and it’s not concerned about inflation, investors should stick with hedges against rising prices like commodities and stocks with high pricing power, investment banks found.\nBank of America screened S&P 500 companies that its analysts believe have the most pricing power and ability to expand margins at times of rising prices. The stocks include a few chipmakers —Nvidia,Texas InstrumentsandBroadcom— as well as consumer plays likeHome Depot,NikeandPepsiCo.Energy dividend payerExxon Mobilis also on the list.\nUBS also developed a framework for scoring corporate pricing agility, which considers pricing power, margin momentum and input cost exposure. For pricing power, UBS quantified the extent to which a company can raise prices over and above costs. For margin momentum, UBS tracked corporate pricing trends using its proprietary pricing mapping.\nFor input cost exposure, UBS searched for companies with negative sentiment around commodity and transport costs on earnings calls.\n\nBillionaire hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones said earlier this week that investors should “go all in on the inflation trades” if the Fed keeps ignoring higher prices.\n“If they treat these numbers — which were material events, they were very material —if they treat them with nonchalance, I think it’s just a green light to bet heavily on every inflation trade,” Tudor Jones said on “Squawk Box”on Monday.\n“If they say, ‘We’re on path, things are good,’ then I would just go all in on the inflation trades. I’d probably buy commodities, buy crypto, buy gold,” added Tudor Jones, who called the stock market crash in 1987.\nThe legendary investor believe cryptocurrencies and other commodities are favorable inflation hedges. Other than buying the commodities outright, investors could also bet on related exchange-traded funds, like gold miner ETFs.\nThe VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX),the biggest gold miner ETF with more than $14 billion in assets under management, has outperformed the populargold ETF GLDso far this year.\nIf the Fed signals it’s time to start removing easy policies\nAnother widely speculated scenario is for the Fed to signal that it’s nearing the time to dial back easy policy saying it will start tapering soon and move up its forecast for a rate increase. Under such a case where the central bank isn’t sufficiently dovish, many expect bond yields to shoot higher.\n“It could easily move longer yields higher,” said Kristina Hooper, Invesco’s chief global market strategist. “A revised dot plot could be one way to do that if it shows the anticipation of earlier or more aggressive rate hikes. And Fed Chair Jay Powell could easily push rates up if he shares that the Fed has started discussing tapering or suggests tapering could start in the next several months.”\nTudor Jones warned that this scenario could lead to another taper tantrum that could cause a correction in stocks.\n“If they course correct, if they say, ‘We’ve got incoming data, we’ve accomplished our mission or we’re on the way very rapidly to accomplishing our mission on employment,’ then you’re going to get a taper tantrum,”Tudor Jones said on Monday. “You’re going to get a sell-off in fixed income. You’re going to get a correction in stocks.”\nCNBC Pro combed through the returns of all S&P 500 stocks during the last five significant spikes in the 10-year Treasury yield. These five periods of a sharp move in rates occurred between 2003 and 2006, 2008 and 2009, 2012 and 2013, 2016 and 2018, and 2020 through now.\nAfter we found the stocks that beat the market every time, we looked for the names that are well-loved by analysts on Wall Street today. The stocks’ average gains during those rising interest rate periods are listed below, along with the percentage of analysts with buy ratings right now.\n\nBank of America’s head of U.S. equity and quantitative strategy Savita Subramanian is advising clients to buy high-quality stocks when tapering nears. High-quality stocks have a “B+” or better S&P quality rating.\nSubramanian said during the 2013 taper tantrum, high-quality names outperformed their low-quality counterparts by 1.3 percentage points from peak to trough in May and June.\nA hint at removing stimulus could also hurt stocks that are most sensitive to the economic recovery, including cyclicals like financials, energy and materials.\n“More hawkish = lower growth. Cyclicals should underperform,” Dennis DeBusschere, macro research analyst at Evercore ISI, said in a note. “The fact that hawkish concerns are being brought up at the same time people believe the reflation trade is in trouble and you have a poor Cyclical backdrop.”\nSo far in 2021, the energy sector has been the biggest winner among the 11 S&P 500 groupings, up 46%. Financials and real estate both gained more than 20% this year.\nIf the Fed makes both camps happy\nA third scenario could occur in which the Fed signals that it is concerned about inflation, but the central bank is not yet ready to taper.\nIf Fed chair Jerome Powell admits the discussion of tapering but nothing has been decided, then the market will likely see a modest rally, led by tech stocks, according to Tom Essaye, founder of the Sevens Report.\n“This is essentially the outcome that Powell and the Fed have been telegraphing for the past several weeks,” Essaye said. “This would be a continuation of the past two weeks’ Goldilocks market outlook. This outcome would help the S&P 500 extend last week’s breakout.”\nInvestors have been rotating back to tech as of late with bond yields coming down. The tech-heavyNasdaq Compositehas rallied about 2.5% this month, hitting a record close on Monday, its first all-time high since April 26. In comparison, the S&P 500 has risen just under 1% in June.\n“This is what the Fed has been doing for the last several months — warning that an inflation surge was coming but that it is transitory so no need to taper,” Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist at the Leuthold Group, told CNBC. “Moreover, this is probably the most expected outcome from the Fed meeting.”\n“Yes, there may be comments by members that the time to start talking about tapering is here, but I think Powell will continue to suggest that inflation is up as expected but is not yet acting any differently than anticipated,” added Paulsen.\nThis year’s pullback in tech stocks has opened some opportunities in high-quality names that are now trading at a discount, according to top-rated technology analyst Toni Sacconaghi of Bernstein.\nThe Wall Street firm found several technology stocks that have inexpensive valuations and are high in quality. Bernstein screened for the cheapest tech names based on their forward price-to-earnings ratio. It has a number of features you won’t get in the iPad Air, but I still think the Air -- which is several hundred dollars cheaper -- is the best tablet computer for most people.\nApple’s iPads, like its iPhones and Macs, have been crushing it recently. The company reported nearly 79% year-over-year revenue growth in its last quarter, generating $7.8 billion from iPad sales alone. Some of that growth was propelled by the pandemic, but I think that trend could continue as people find ongoing use for the iPad’s portability as parts of the world begin to reopen.\nFor the first time, the 2021 iPad Pros are equipped with the same M1 chip that also powers the new iMac desktop and therefreshed MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac Mini that were released last year. It paves the way for a future where the iPad and the Mac share more functionality, although Apple has insisted that it will keep the product lines separate for serving different uses -- and as long as both are selling well, there’s no real incentive for Apple to combine them.\nHere’s what you need to know about Apple’s new 12.9-inch iPad Pro.\nWhat’s good\nApple’s 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro\nThe M1 processor is fast, but you probably won’t notice that speed unless you’re doing some pretty intensive tasks like video editing. Normal tasks, like browsing the web and just opening apps, feels pretty much the same as my 2018 iPad Pro: smooth and quick.\nThe benefits of M1 can be seen in other places: Photo and video editing is quicker, for example. You can edit multiple streams of video at the same time in some apps, like LumaFusion.\nSome new games will take advantage of added graphics power, like the recent release of the Divinity: Original Sin 2 for iPad, which lets two players play at a smoother frame rate in split-screen on an M1 iPad than on other iPad models it supports. I couldn’t see much of a difference between the game running on the new iPad Pro and my 2018 model, however.\nApple’s 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro\nThere are other really cool benefits to the chip. Apple added a new wide-angle camera to the front of both of the new iPad Pros. It enables a feature called Center Stage, which follows you around as you’re talking on FaceTime, WebEx or any other video app that decides to use it. It’s awesome. I called my wife once, and my editor another time, and the camera zoomed out or in and followed me as I walked back and forth around the room. It’s similar to the functionality built into competing products like the Facebook Portal.\nApple’s 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro\nSpeaking of cameras, you also get two cameras on the back, including an ultra-wide angle lens that’s fun for capturing more in a scene. There’s also the lidar camera we saw last year, which helps for augmented reality experiences. You can just start dropping digital objects on top of the real world in apps that support augmented reality, instead of waiting for the iPad to scan the room.\nApple’s 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro\nI don’t use lidar or AR very much, but it’s really useful to have if you’re doing a home project and want to use it to measure, see how new furniture might fit in a room, and so on. Apps like Procreate let industrial designers create 3D models and then drop digital models in the real world to see how they might look in person, too.\nI said this last year, and I’ll say it again: The $349 Magic Keyboard makes a huge difference for people who want to work from an iPad. It adds a great trackpad, a really good keyboard that’s easy to type on, and turns the iPad into more of a laptop-hybrid. I still use a MacBook Air for most things, since I’m more productive switching between apps on macOS, but the Magic Keyboard is worth buying if you just need a tablet that serves as an occasional laptop. I just really like the versatility: I can go from working on this review outside in the backyard to lounging on the couch at night reading the news on a big screen, the latter of which isn’t as comfortable with a laptop.\nApple’s 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro\nThe 12.9-inch iPad Pro has a big feature the regular new 11-inch model doesn’t have: a “Liquid Retina XDR” display, which is fancy branding for using mini LEDs. This technology enables a much brighter screen for certain things, like watching HDR movies. I also found it looked brighter outside in direct sunlight than my 2018 11-inch iPad Pro.\nUsing the iPad Pro outside.\nThe brightness of the 11-inch iPad Pro caps out at 600 nits. That’s the same for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro in most apps, but it has peak full screen brightness for things like HDR video of 1,000 nits, and individual mini LEDs can get as bright as 1,600 nits. That’s a little in the weeds, but it means brighter areas in a video or photo, or the difference between say a really bright sun in deep black space.\nBy comparison, the new iMac has 500 nits of brightness, so this is a feature professional video and photo editors will appreciate on a portable device.\nApple’s 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro\nThe designs-for-pros trend continues to the charging port, which now supports Thunderbolt / USB 4 for faster data transfers if you’re dumping a bunch of movies or photos from a camera, for example. It supports up to 6K external displays if you want to connect it to a monitor and up to 10 Gbps Ethernet connections if you want to hardwire into your router for faster internet. Again, most folks might not use this — I don’t — but it’s there for the people who need it.\nIt supports the $99 Apple Pencil, which I use every now and then to jot down notes or write to search in apps (which works surprisingly well). Power users will find it useful for finely tuning or cropping parts of picture or video, especially when poking a finger at the screen isn’t precise and when you want to use it as a tablet instead of a laptop.\nApple’s 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro\nThe speakers haven’t changed, but they’re still really good, offering surround sound from both sides of the iPad Pro.\nThe new iPad Pro supports 5G if you pay for the cellular model, about a $200 upgrade. 5G isn’t a huge deal yet, but it’s starting to become more prevalent around the U.S. and it’s great future-proofing for when you can download and upload movies, videos, files and more much faster. I didn’t have a great Verizon 5G signal at home, though, so I mostly just stuck with Wi-Fi, but I’m excited to use it for streaming Xbox games anywhere there’s a good signal, which I loved playing on the iPad over Wi-Fi.\nThe big screen is fun for gaming, too.\nThe battery easily lasted me through a full day, but that could extend to several days on lighter usage or under a day if you’re working on a 5G cellular connection with max brightness.\nWhat’s bad\nApple’s 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro\nIt’s not cheap.\nThe 12.9-inch iPad Pro, without a keyboard or cellular connectivity, starts at $1,099. A comparable MacBook Air starts at $999. Add in 5G and the Magic Keyboard keyboard and you’re going to spend $1,648 — and that’s for the minimum 128GB of storage. Boost the storage and you could easily spend more than $2,000. I totally see the portability benefits and know there are different use cases for the MacBook Air and an iPad Pro. But it’s one reason why I think the iPad Air or even the regular iPad is a better buy for people who don’t really need the awesome display or the added processing power you get with a Pro. It’s a top-of-the-line machine and it’s priced accordingly.\nI think there are a few ways Apple could make this iPad even better. You can add an external display, for example, but you can’t really use it the way you’d use an external screen with a Mac — for instance, by dragging and dropping apps to it. You can just mirror the iPad screen or use some added tools and features for workflows in apps that support the additional display. This seems to be a limitation of iPadOS since we know the M1 Macs support external monitors with plenty of apps just fine.\nApple’s 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro\nAnd speaking of macOS, as I said in my recent iMac review, I wish there was some sort of convergence between the two. There are times, like with an external monitor attached, that I wish I could just use macOS and have various windows open all over the place for much faster multitasking with the trackpad and keyboard.\nLastly, this is just a personal preference, but I generally like the smaller 11-inch size most of the time. It’s just easier to hold when you’re lounging in bed compared with the 12.9-inch. On the other hand, with a keyboard attached, I like the 12.9-inch better. So, my advice is to try both sizes if you’re not necessarily buying the 12.9-inch model for the brighter screen.\nShould you buy it?\nEditing some quick video on the 2021 12.9-inch iPad Pro.\nThe iPad Pro continues the iPad’s decade-long evolution from a casual computing device mostly for consuming content around the house, to a full-fledged computer — only with a touchscreen instead of a built-in keyboard and touchpad like the Mac lineup, and an operating system that’s built for that difference.\nThe people who need the iPad Pro are professional video editors, photographers and other people who want to do heavy computing tasks in the field.\nIt’s also fine for people with deep wallets who just want the best iPad. If money wasn’t a question, this is the iPad I’d replace my 2018 iPad Pro with, just because I love the bright screen and the front camera that tracks me for video chats. (I’d just have to deal with holding the heavier model over my head in bed.)\nBut most people are going to be totally happy with the iPad Air. It gives you a similar design to the 11-inch iPad Pro. If the central bank says its not time to remove accommodative policies and it’s not concerned about inflation, investors should stick with hedges against rising prices like commodities and stocks with high pricing power, investment banks found.\nBank of America screened S&P 500 companies that its analysts believe have the most pricing power and ability to expand margins at times of rising prices. The stocks include a few chipmakers —Nvidia,Texas InstrumentsandBroadcom— as well as consumer plays likeHome Depot,NikeandPepsiCo.Energy dividend payerExxon Mobilis also on the list.\nUBS also developed a framework for scoring corporate pricing agility, which considers pricing power, margin momentum and input cost exposure. For pricing power, UBS quantified the extent to which a company can raise prices over and above costs. For margin momentum, UBS tracked corporate pricing trends using its proprietary pricing mapping.\nFor input cost exposure, UBS searched for companies with negative sentiment around commodity and transport costs on earnings calls.\n\nBillionaire hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones said earlier this week that investors should “go all in on the inflation trades” if the Fed keeps ignoring higher prices.\n“If they treat these numbers — which were material events, they were very material —if they treat them with nonchalance, I think it’s just a green light to bet heavily on every inflation trade,” Tudor Jones said on “Squawk Box”on Monday.\n“If they say, ‘We’re on path, things are good,’ then I would just go all in on the inflation trades. I’d probably buy commodities, buy crypto, buy gold,” added Tudor Jones, who called the stock market crash in 1987.\nThe legendary investor believe cryptocurrencies and other commodities are favorable inflation hedges. Other than buying the commodities outright, investors could also bet on related exchange-traded funds, like gold miner ETFs.\nThe VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF (GDX),the biggest gold miner ETF with more than $14 billion in assets under management, has outperformed the populargold ETF GLDso far this year.\nIf the Fed signals it’s time to start removing easy policies\nAnother widely speculated scenario is for the Fed to signal that it’s nearing the time to dial back easy policy saying it will start tapering soon and move up its forecast for a rate increase. Under such a case where the central bank isn’t sufficiently dovish, many expect bond yields to shoot higher.\n“It could easily move longer yields higher,” said Kristina Hooper, Invesco’s chief global market strategist. “A revised dot plot could be one way to do that if it shows the anticipation of earlier or more aggressive rate hikes. And Fed Chair Jay Powell could easily push rates up if he shares that the Fed has started discussing tapering or suggests tapering could start in the next several months.”\nTudor Jones warned that this scenario could lead to another taper tantrum that could cause a correction in stocks.\n“If they course correct, if they say, ‘We’ve got incoming data, we’ve accomplished our mission or we’re on the way very rapidly to accomplishing our mission on employment,’ then you’re going to get a taper tantrum,”Tudor Jones said on Monday. “You’re going to get a sell-off in fixed income. You’re going to get a correction in stocks.”\nCNBC Pro combed through the returns of all S&P 500 stocks during the last five significant spikes in the 10-year Treasury yield. These five periods of a sharp move in rates occurred between 2003 and 2006, 2008 and 2009, 2012 and 2013, 2016 and 2018, and 2020 through now.\nAfter we found the stocks that beat the market every time, we looked for the names that are well-loved by analysts on Wall Street today. The stocks’ average gains during those rising interest rate periods are listed below, along with the percentage of analysts with buy ratings right now.\n\nBank of America’s head of U.S. equity and quantitative strategy Savita Subramanian is advising clients to buy high-quality stocks when tapering nears. High-quality stocks have a “B+” or better S&P quality rating.\nSubramanian said during the 2013 taper tantrum, high-quality names outperformed their low-quality counterparts by 1.3 percentage points from peak to trough in May and June.\nA hint at removing stimulus could also hurt stocks that are most sensitive to the economic recovery, including cyclicals like financials, energy and materials.\n“More hawkish = lower growth. Cyclicals should underperform,” Dennis DeBusschere, macro research analyst at Evercore ISI, said in a note. “The fact that hawkish concerns are being brought up at the same time people believe the reflation trade is in trouble and you have a poor Cyclical backdrop.”\nSo far in 2021, the energy sector has been the biggest winner among the 11 S&P 500 groupings, up 46%. Financials and real estate both gained more than 20% this year.\nIf the Fed makes both camps happy\nA third scenario could occur in which the Fed signals that it is concerned about inflation, but the central bank is not yet ready to taper.\nIf Fed chair Jerome Powell admits the discussion of tapering but nothing has been decided, then the market will likely see a modest rally, led by tech stocks, according to Tom Essaye, founder of the Sevens Report.\n“This is essentially the outcome that Powell and the Fed have been telegraphing for the past several weeks,” Essaye said. “This would be a continuation of the past two weeks’ Goldilocks market outlook. This outcome would help the S&P 500 extend last week’s breakout.”\nInvestors have been rotating back to tech as of late with bond yields coming down. The tech-heavyNasdaq Compositehas rallied about 2.5% this month, hitting a record close on Monday, its first all-time high since April 26. In comparison, the S&P 500 has risen just under 1% in June.\n“This is what the Fed has been doing for the last several months — warning that an inflation surge was coming but that it is transitory so no need to taper,” Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist at the Leuthold Group, told CNBC. “Moreover, this is probably the most expected outcome from the Fed meeting.”\n“Yes, there may be comments by members that the time to start talking about tapering is here, but I think Powell will continue to suggest that inflation is up as expected but is not yet acting any differently than anticipated,” added Paulsen.\nThis year’s pullback in tech stocks has opened some opportunities in high-quality names that are now trading at a discount, according to top-rated technology analyst Toni Sacconaghi of Bernstein.\nThe Wall Street firm found several technology stocks that have inexpensive valuations and are high in quality. A closely-watched trial with Fortnite maker Epic Games over App Store policies kicks off next week.</p><p>“The App Store has been an economic miracle. Last year, the estimates are that there was over a half a trillion dollars of economic activity because of the store. And, so, this has been just an economic gamechanger for not only the United States, but several countries around the world. And, we’re going to go in and tell our story. And we’ll see where it goes. But, we’re confident,” Cook told CNBC.</p><p>Apple’s gross margin was also unusually elevated for the company. (AAPL) and Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) rank among the top five companies in the world by market cap. While the two stocks beat the market over the last five and ten years, each lags the S&amp;P 500 in 2021. Is this an indication the stocks lost their mojo? After all, larger companies tend to grow at a slower pace, thereby weighing on the share price.</p>\n<p>Actually, there are a number of reasons to believe both businesses will flourish. In the case of Amazon, the COVID crisis spurred a membership increase in Prime, while the cloud continues to grow at a rapid pace, and the company’s digital ad revenues are experiencing marked growth.</p>\n<p>As for Apple, a new iPhone cycle is breaking records, the move to 5G appears to serve as a growth catalyst, and the firm’s subscriber services are also a source of continued growth.</p>\n<p><b>Apple’s Growth Catalysts</b></p>\n<p>Apple recorded a 54% increase in revenue for the latest quarter and a 110% surge in net income. Every single product line recorded double-digit growth, with iPhone sales increasing 65% year over year, Mac sales surging 70%, and iPad sales jumping nearly 79%.</p>\n<p>The question is, can growth continue?</p>\n<p>The answer is an indubitable yes, and the services category is one means by which the company can move forward. In 2017, Cook set a goal of doubling services revenue by the end of 2020. Last July, it was announced the company hit that target six months ahead of schedule.</p>\n<p>The latest quarterly report had services generating $16.9 billion. That marked the highest services revenue in Apple’s history, and also the fastest growth rate for services, at just under 27%, in over two years.</p>\n<p>Although products’ revenues were more than four times that of theservices, the latter category posted a gross margin of over 70%. In comparison, gross margin for products was 36.1%. Additionally, the revenue from services is less cyclical than that from products. Consequently, the services category can be expected to drive significant growth for the company.</p>\n<p>Furthermore, Apple now counts 660 million service subscribers, twice the number of subs recorded two and half years ago. The company is driving that growth through new offerings; for example, Apple Arcade added 30 new games, increasing the total to 180, and updated Apple Fitness+.</p>\n<p>In addition to the services setting new revenue and growth rates, Mac computers also set a new revenue record.</p>\n<blockquote>\n The last three quarters for Mac have been its best three quarters ever.\n</blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n Tim Cook,CEO\n</blockquote>\n<p>Investors can expect continued growth in Mac revenues in 2021. IDCforecaststhe PC market will grow 18.2% this year. That marks a 40% increase from the robust growth in personal computer sales witnessed in 2020.</p>\n<p>However, perhaps the greatest immediate growth driver lies in Apple's share of the 5G smartphone market. Research from Strategic AnalyticsestimatesApple captured over 30% of the 5G smartphone market in the first three months of 2020. IDC alsoprojectsa 35.6% CAGR for 5G smartphones through 2025.</p>\n<p>Now consider that since 2016, with the exception of 4Q 2020, Apple has held no more than 17.9% of the smartphone&nbsp;market&nbsp;during the beginning of a new cycle, and that its market share drops to less than 12% as each cycle slows.</p>\n<p>By perusing the following chart, you can see that should Apple’s dominance in 5G continue, it will lead to the company capturing a much larger share of the overall smartphone market, a very favorable outcome for investors.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8e72212554512203a49b9cbb213dfcf8\" tg-width=\"1216\" tg-height=\"744\"></p>\n<p><b>Amazon’s Growth Drivers</b></p>\n<p>The following chart provides a clear picture of Amazon’s growth over the trailing twelve months.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/91210115ceb226aae26de479cd1d767f\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"978\"><span>Source:Q1 21 Earnings Presentation</span></p>\n<p>Obviously, ecommerce is the foundation of Amazon’s business, and a sound argument can be made that Prime is now the cornerstone of that foundation. Since January of 2020, Prime added about 50 million new members globally and totals more than 200 million subscribers today.</p>\n<p>Prime drives ecommerce customer engagement and increases sales by a wide margin. For example, 74% of Prime&nbsp;subscribers&nbsp;buy a product online every few weeks, whereas those without a Prime membership only make an online purchase a few times a year.</p>\n<p>The average Prime&nbsp;member&nbsp;also spends $1400 per year versus $600 spent on ecommerce by non members. Therefore, it follows that the increased number of subscribers will drive greater ecommerce revenues.</p>\n<p>The company is also reinforcing its advantage in ecommerce through investments in its logistics network. Over the last four quarters, Amazon devoted $45.4 billion in&nbsp;capex, twice the sum spent in the previous twelve months. To place this in context, Walmart budgeted $14 billion for capex this year, and the $45 billion-plus capex budget exceeds the total annual&nbsp;revenues&nbsp;of all but the 72 largest US companies.</p>\n<p>It is important to note that although the firm is investing in a wide array of initiatives, the largest expenditures are devoted to increasing fulfillment capacity. During the Q4 earnings call, management noted the company’s logistics network&nbsp;increased&nbsp;by fifty percent in 2020.</p>\n<p>An example of the explosive growth of these assets can be found in the firm's investment in&nbsp;delivery&nbsp;stations. In 2019, Amazon had 159 delivery stations. That number ballooned to 337 at the end of 2020 and is expected to grow to 506 locations by year’s end.</p>\n<p>These metrics provide insights into the degree of vertical integration Amazon will soon achieve, and the advantages that will provide for the firm’s ecommerce segment.</p>\n<p>A second growth driver is Amazon’s advertising business. Although revenues from advertising are not divulged, management states that the Other category consists primarily of advertising revenues.</p>\n<p>Net sales from Other has more than doubled, from $10.1 billion in 2018, to nearly $21.5 billion in 2020. In the last earnings call of 2020, CFO Brain Olsavsky noted growth in Other revenue of 41% in Q2, 49% in Q3, and 64% in Q4 “that is primarily advertising.”</p>\n<p>Ecommerce channel advertising revenue will exceed $18 billion in 2021, and will equal around 80% of all spend on US ecommerce sites.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/76abb398645e756728ceabc48ec4a0ae\" tg-width=\"470\" tg-height=\"290\"><span>Source:Insider Intelligence</span></p>\n<p>Although advertising and subscription services are arguably underappreciated sources of Amazon’s potential, I believe the greatest source of growth will stem from AWS.</p>\n<p>The chart below provides data regarding growth prospects in the cloud market.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cef232b99c6574bbdcded96ea37d17c4\" tg-width=\"650\" tg-height=\"405\"><span>Source:MarketsAndMarkets</span></p>\n<p>MarketsAndMarkets forecasts a CAGR of 14.2% for the cloud market from 2020 through 2025.</p>\n<p>The growth for cloud is not only assured, it is likely to continue for the foreseeable future. Furthermore, investors should understand the margin provided by cloud is much greater than that of most of the company’s businesses.</p>\n<p>That’s reflected in the fact that in FY 2020, AWS contributed approximately $13.5 billion in sales, or just 12.4% of total revenues; but the cloud segment provided 47% of Amazon’s operating income.</p>\n<p><b>Head-To-Head Comparisons</b></p>\n<p>The following chart provides a variety of valuation metrics. The average 12 month price target of 34 analysts is $149.15. The price target of 15 analysts that rated the stock since the last earnings report is $159.35, approximately 25% above today’s valuation.</p>\n<p>Amazon stock trades for $3222.90. The average 12 month price target of 47 analysts is $4,180.54. Furthermore, each company is venturing into, or reinforcing, growth initiatives in arenas that provide robust profit margins.</p>\n<p>Apple’s expanded services offerings and the developments in 5G bode well for the company.</p>\n<p>Amazon’s growth in advertising, coupled with its cloud business, provides ample opportunities for increased sales in high margin businesses.</p>\n<p>However, I view the following chart as a telling testimony of the difference in the two companies' prospects.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d0e3273ad43df2ecd76b8f356de27fd2\" tg-width=\"740\" tg-height=\"433\"><span>Source:CNBC</span></p>\n<p>Apple’s growth is more cyclical in nature than that of AMZN. While I believe the current iPhone cycle will last longer and provide greater growth than prior cycles due to 5G, I still view it as transitory, with an unavoidable decline towards the end.</p>\n<p>I consider Amazon’s prospects in cloud and digital advertising as having longer legs. I also note almost every metric other than forward P/E reflects greater long term growth prospects for Amazon.</p>\n<p>Consequently, I rate Amazon as the better of the two investments at this juncture.</p>\n<p>I rate Apple as a HOLD.</p>\n<p>I rate Amazon as a BUY.</p>\n<p>However, I am “nibbling” at the stock, as I see the share price as trading on the richer end of what I am willing to pay for in that investment.</p>\n<p>For those that eschew investments in growth stocks, I point to an icon of value investors, Warren Buffett.</p>\n<p>It is reasonable to assume Warren Buffett considered the growth prospects of the two companies when he made his initial investment in Apple in 2016, and Amazon in 2019. After all, larger companies tend to grow at a slower pace, thereby weighing on the share price.\nActually, there are a number of reasons to believe both businesses will flourish. In the case of Amazon, the COVID crisis spurred a membership increase in Prime, while the cloud continues to grow at a rapid pace, and the company’s digital ad revenues are experiencing marked growth.\nAs for Apple, a new iPhone cycle is breaking records, the move to 5G appears to serve as a growth catalyst, and the firm’s subscriber services are also a source of continued growth.\nApple’s Growth Catalysts\nApple recorded a 54% increase in revenue for the latest quarter and a 110% surge in net income. Every single product line recorded double-digit growth, with iPhone sales increasing 65% year over year, Mac sales surging 70%, and iPad sales jumping nearly 79%.\nThe question is, can growth continue?\nThe answer is an indubitable yes, and the services category is one means by which the company can move forward. In 2017, Cook set a goal of doubling services revenue by the end of 2020. Last July, it was announced the company hit that target six months ahead of schedule.\nThe latest quarterly report had services generating $16.9 billion. That marked the highest services revenue in Apple’s history, and also the fastest growth rate for services, at just under 27%, in over two years.\nAlthough products’ revenues were more than four times that of theservices, the latter category posted a gross margin of over 70%. In comparison, gross margin for products was 36.1%. Additionally, the revenue from services is less cyclical than that from products. Consequently, the services category can be expected to drive significant growth for the company.\nFurthermore, Apple now counts 660 million service subscribers, twice the number of subs recorded two and half years ago. The company is driving that growth through new offerings; for example, Apple Arcade added 30 new games, increasing the total to 180, and updated Apple Fitness+.\nIn addition to the services setting new revenue and growth rates, Mac computers also set a new revenue record.\n\n The last three quarters for Mac have been its best three quarters ever.\n\n\n Tim Cook,CEO\n\nInvestors can expect continued growth in Mac revenues in 2021. IDCforecaststhe PC market will grow 18.2% this year. That marks a 40% increase from the robust growth in personal computer sales witnessed in 2020.\nHowever, perhaps the greatest immediate growth driver lies in Apple's share of the 5G smartphone market. Research from Strategic AnalyticsestimatesApple captured over 30% of the 5G smartphone market in the first three months of 2020. IDC alsoprojectsa 35.6% CAGR for 5G smartphones through 2025.\nNow consider that since 2016, with the exception of 4Q 2020, Apple has held no more than 17.9% of the smartphone market during the beginning of a new cycle, and that its market share drops to less than 12% as each cycle slows.\nBy perusing the following chart, you can see that should Apple’s dominance in 5G continue, it will lead to the company capturing a much larger share of the overall smartphone market, a very favorable outcome for investors.\n\nAmazon’s Growth Drivers\nThe following chart provides a clear picture of Amazon’s growth over the trailing twelve months.\nSource:Q1 21 Earnings Presentation\nObviously, ecommerce is the foundation of Amazon’s business, and a sound argument can be made that Prime is now the cornerstone of that foundation. Since January of 2020, Prime added about 50 million new members globally and totals more than 200 million subscribers today.\nPrime drives ecommerce customer engagement and increases sales by a wide margin. For example, 74% of Prime subscribers buy a product online every few weeks, whereas those without a Prime membership only make an online purchase a few times a year.\nThe average Prime member also spends $1400 per year versus $600 spent on ecommerce by non members. Therefore, it follows that the increased number of subscribers will drive greater ecommerce revenues.\nThe company is also reinforcing its advantage in ecommerce through investments in its logistics network. Over the last four quarters, Amazon devoted $45.4 billion in capex, twice the sum spent in the previous twelve months. To place this in context, Walmart budgeted $14 billion for capex this year, and the $45 billion-plus capex budget exceeds the total annual revenues of all but the 72 largest US companies.\nIt is important to note that although the firm is investing in a wide array of initiatives, the largest expenditures are devoted to increasing fulfillment capacity. During the Q4 earnings call, management noted the company’s logistics network increased by fifty percent in 2020.\nAn example of the explosive growth of these assets can be found in the firm's investment in delivery stations. In 2019, Amazon had 159 delivery stations. That number ballooned to 337 at the end of 2020 and is expected to grow to 506 locations by year’s end.\nThese metrics provide insights into the degree of vertical integration Amazon will soon achieve, and the advantages that will provide for the firm’s ecommerce segment.\nA second growth driver is Amazon’s advertising business. Although revenues from advertising are not divulged, management states that the Other category consists primarily of advertising revenues.\nNet sales from Other has more than doubled, from $10.1 billion in 2018, to nearly $21.5 billion in 2020. While I believe the current iPhone cycle will last longer and provide greater growth than prior cycles due to 5G, I still view it as transitory, with an unavoidable decline towards the end.\nI consider Amazon’s prospects in cloud and digital advertising as having longer legs. I also note almost every metric other than forward P/E reflects greater long term growth prospects for Amazon.\nConsequently, I rate Amazon as the better of the two investments at this juncture.\nI rate Apple as a HOLD.\nI rate Amazon as a BUY.\nHowever, I am “nibbling” at the stock, as I see the share price as trading on the richer end of what I am willing to pay for in that investment.\nFor those that eschew investments in growth stocks, I point to an icon of value investors, Warren Buffett.\nIt is reasonable to assume Warren Buffett considered the growth prospects of the two companies when he made his initial investment in Apple in 2016, and Amazon in 2019. (GME) stock in order to force hedge funds to cover their massively shorted shares.\nThis particular instance brought about massive negative sentiment for the growing financial application company, as Robinhood was forced to halt buy orders for several high volatility stocks in order to not go bankrupt themselves. The phenomenon brought Robinhood into global headlines and even had U.S. government officials using terms like “meme stocks.”\nCritics of Robinhood’s platform accuse it of gamifying the stock market with a sensationalizing user interface, and essentially creating an accessible and legal casino for anyone willing to play.
