Since March he's s","content":"
LONDON, July 9 (Reuters) - Kerry Kraker, 56, has worked in kitchens all his life. Since March he's spent around $100 a week - half his spare cash – on silver coins. He's part of a growing social media movement who say they are buying bars and coins for protection from a coming age of inflation.
\n
Thanks to a community of like-minded silver 'stackers' gathering on social-media platform Reddit Inc., Seattle-based Kraker says he also feels empowered.
\n
\"They are so encouraging and so convinced in the changes they can cause,\" Kraker, who lost his home in the financial crisis, told Reuters.
\n
Inspired by Reddit forum WallStreetBets, some of the 122,000-strong community hope to corner the market and bring down what they say is an unjust banking system.
\n
Market professionals say that is unlikely to succeed - there is plenty of silver, and central bankers in the United States and Europe expect inflation to stay in low single-digits.
\n
But bankers aren't getting through to this group.
\n
\"There's a bit of anger, like 'fuck the system.' If there's a back door to wealth, I might take that door because the front door is closed,\" said Kraker. \"The bankers and others have basically shut that door for everyone who is not themselves.\"
\n
The core of the movement is a Reddit community called Wall Street Silver, formed in January at the time WallStreetBets was marshalling an uprising of ordinary people against the financial elites, through coordinated buying of company shares.
\n
Reuters spoke to more than 20 members, who call themselves \"silverbacks\" and \"apes,\" have a home page featuring an image of an army of primates on the march from the \"Planet of the Apes\" movie, and say things like \"Ape like shiny.\" They organise \"raids\" – days on which everyone buys together.
\n
The group's founder, Ivan Bayoukhi, is a 24-year old former car salesman living with his parents in Alberta, Canada. \"NOW IS THE TIME TO WAKE UP AND TAKE THE POWER BACK IN THE HANDS OF THE PEOPLE,\" says
\n
one of his characteristic posts.
\n
Silver costs around $26 an ounce. Stackers think the price will rise as inflation erodes the value of currencies, demand for silver rises, and supplies run short. Some say that by buying up bars and coins, they can jack up prices by 100% or even 1,000%, to the point where they can call the shots against the so-called bullion banks, the large financial institutions which lead trade in precious metals.
\n
A March post Our time draws nigh...keep stacking and we will win the day! : Wallstreetsilver pictured silver coins laid out to spell a message to the head of JPMorgan Chase & Co, a U.S. investment bank which dominates the bullion trade: \"KISS MY ASS JAMIE DIMON.\" JPMorgan declined to comment.
\n
\"In a year or two we will have millions of people in the movement,\" Bayoukhi told Reuters. \"And then it will be over for the bullion banks.\"
\n
\"CORNER THE MARKET\"
\n
Prices of silver and gold, which are traditionally seen as safe stores of wealth, have risen since 2019: Gold is up around 40% and silver around 70% since then. The silver stackers are joining millions worldwide who believe currencies are vulnerable – a fear that has grown as governments borrowed and printed money in the pandemic.
\n
\"It scares me every day when this bomb will burst,\" said Tim Hack, a 23-year-old stacker in Germany. \"Silver and gold really have intrinsic physical value that you can even feel when you hold it in your hand.\"
\n
Posters on Reddit joined the silver fray on Jan. 27, when posts appeared on WallStreetBets saying that if enough people bought the metal, they could push prices to the moon.
\n
\"Corner the market,\" said one.
\n
Adding to the impetus was an argument put forward on Reddit that big banks trade huge quantities of paper contracts for silver that they don't have in their possession, keeping prices lower than they should be.
\n
In some ways, that's correct.
\n
Contracts representing around 800 million ounces of silver are active in the New York futures market alone - more than twice the amount the exchange says is in its registered vaults, not all of which is available for delivery. Much of the silver that banks buy and sell in London, another big trading hub, is borrowed, bankers and traders say.
\n
If every professional who owns silver on paper called in their dues at once, there wouldn't be enough metal on hand, they agree. The system works because most people with contracts don't want actual metal, which they'd have to pay to store and insure. They are speculators, or miners and jewellers, hedging their risks.
\n
After the posts on WallStreetBets, around $3 billion rushed into a fund run by asset managers Blackrock that stores silver for investors. Blackrock said it added more than 100 ounces of silver to its stockpile in three days. Silver's wholesale price jumped nearly 20%.
\n
Much of the silver stored for Blackrock is in London. The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), an industry body, later said that there had been \"concerns that London would run out of silver.\"
\n
Blackrock told Reuters it did not track where the money had come from.
\n
The Reddit group's founder Bayoukhi said he watched with growing excitement, turned to his father and said, \"Why don't I start a Wall Street silver community?\"
\n
\"FAMILY FOREVER\"
\n
There's also truth in Redditors' claims that big players can influence the silver market. One trader tactic is spoofing - sending out fake buy or sell orders to shift prices before completing the real trade.
\n
In 2020, JPMorgan paid $920 million to U.S. authorities to settle charges that its staff sent \"hundreds of thousands\" of fake orders into precious metals and Treasury markets. The bank said at the time that the people responsible had left and it had improved its compliance systems. It declined further comment for this story.
\n
But the impact of spoofing lasts only seconds or minutes, said Ross Norman, a London-based former precious metals trader.
\n
The January squeeze lasted three days. Then WallStreetBets returned its focus to stock markets; silver calmed. Since early February, the price of silver has fallen by a dollar.
\n
Undeterred, Wall Street Silver issues a deluge of tips, analysis, memes, photos and encouragement. It is only Reddit's 3,783rd biggest community, but it is frequently in the top 20 for volume of posts per day.
\n
When a new member posts, Bayoukhi often responds saying, \"You are now family forever.\"
\n
\"HELL OF A TIME\"
\n
Reddit buyers sit at the end of a fat silver pipeline. Only about a quarter of the 1 billion ounces or so that are produced each year is used to manufacture the bars and coins that most of them are buying, analysts say. Most of the rest is used for jewellery and in industrial applications.
\n
Michael Mesaric, who runs the world's largest gold and silver refiner - Valcambi SA, in Switzerland - says the 1,000 ounce bars of silver used in the wholesale market are plentiful: For small investors to think they can corner the market is \"entirely wrong.\"
\n
\"They can engineer a squeeze on products,\" he said. \"But silver in total? They'll have a hell of a time.\"
\n
Investors will stockpile a lot of silver this year, but less than in 2020, according to consultants Metals Focus. Demand in the West is strong, but in India, one of the biggest silver consuming countries, the pandemic is reducing people's ability to buy, they say.
\n
Funds like Blackrock's stockpiled 331 million ounces - the most ever - in 2020, Metals Focus said in a report for the Silver Institute; bar and coin buyers took home 200 million ounces more. This year, the consultancy expects funds to hoard 150 million ounces - the second highest level ever - and bar and coin buyers 253 million ounces.
\n
Silver coins and bars can certainly hold their value.
Until it doesn’t, which has been the distinguish","content":"
Nothing succeeds like excess, as the old quip goes. Until it doesn’t, which has been the distinguishing aspect of market cycles forever and, most dramatically, in this century. Unlike last year’s pandemic-induced paroxysm, the 2000 bursting of the dot-com bubble and the 2008 financial crisis were marked by initial public offerings by companies eager to seize the moment—and investors’ money.
\n
All of which is prologue to what could shape up as this cycle’s bell-ringing event, theinitial public offering of Robinhood, the online broker that pioneered zero commissions and hooked a new generation on investing and trading. Thepaperwork was filedwith the SEC this past week. Financial details about the upstart that purports to democratize investing (and, in the process, was hit with a record$70 million fine by Finra, the brokerage business’s self-regulatory body) are discussedhere, but a few salient points are buried deep in the S-1 filing.
\n
Customer assets more than quadrupled, to $80.9 billion, on March 31 from the total a year earlier, with the lion’s share—some $65.1 billion—accounted for by equities. Options comprised a relatively small $2 billion in assets, but generated nearly half ($197.9 million) of the March quarter’s $420.4 million in transactions revenue. Stocks produced $133.3 million in revenue, even though assets in equities were 40 times as large as those in options. Revenue from cryptocurrencies totaled $87.6 million, with customers’ crypto assets totaling $11.6 billion.
\n
While Robinhood makes much of opening the market to neophyte investors with limited means by letting them buy fractional shares of their favorite stocks, that’s not its biggest business. Instead, it’s speculative options trading, which exploded early this year especially among the YOLO (You Only Live Once) crowd willing to stake a few bucks on cheap, about-to-expire calls of stocks talked up on Reddit.
\n
There are signs that the frenzied trading, which peaked during the winter, has eased with the reopening of the economy and the return to the prepandemic normal (and with it an uptick in Covid cases after a steady decline). Trading crypto might be simpler on a brokerage platform like Robinhood, but wasn’t the advantage of DeFi (decentralized finance) supposed to be that intermediaries wouldn’t be needed at all?
\n
Bulls on Robinhood would be betting on continued growth of its independent trading model, rather than investors using passive funds through advisors, which the filing derides. The broker pledged to reserve up to 35% of its IPO for its customers, who are apt to be enthusiastic buyers and, more importantly, hold onto them with “diamond hands” through volatile times.
\n
And, indeed, turbulence, or worse, could lie ahead,Michael Burry told our colleague Connor Smith. Burry, a key player in both the book and film versions ofThe Big Short, won a fortune by betting against the housing market before the subprime mortgage collapse. More recently, he was an early bull onGamestop(ticker: GME), but took his profits in 2020’s fourth quarter before the frenzy around the original meme stock took off. Now he’s warning that the craze will end in tears.
\n
“I don’t know when meme stocks such as this will crash, but we probably do not have to wait too long, as I believe the retail crowd is fully invested in this theme, and Wall Street has jumped on the coattails,” he told Connor in an email. “We’re running out of new money available to jump on the bandwagon.”
\n
The Robinhood offering wouldn’t be the first stock sale that could be a top-of-the-market event. Back in mid-2007,Barron’sAndrew Bary calledthe IPO ofBlackstone Group(BX) precisely that, just weeks before concerns about excesses of subprime lending rumbled through the global money markets and months before theDow Jones Industrial Averagepeaked the following October.
\n
And who could forget the parade of wacky IPOs in the late 1990s that presaged the potential of the internet, but lacked earnings or revenue or even a viable business plan? By March 2000,Barron’spublished itsseminal cover storyrevealing that these dot-com darlings were rapidly burning cash. That very month marked theNasdaq Composite’speak; the index would fall nearly 80% by October 2002.
\n
While Burry warns of a crash in meme stocks from their vastly elevated levels, which some of the companies have exploited by issuing richly valued shares, the overall market—now trading at about 21.5 times estimated earnings for the next 12 months—hasn’t approached the bubble levels of past cycles. But surveys of market strategists and institutional investors see little upside, with year-end targets averaging around 4200 on theS&P 500—shy of Thursday’s close of 4319.
\n
And while it’s always dangerous to say this, itisdifferent this time around from 2000 and 2008. Ahead of crashes in those years, the Federal Reserve had been tightening policy for some time, resulting in a flat-to-negatively sloped yield curve. Shorter-term Treasury yields were pushed above longer-term ones, leading the bond market to predict that the economy was headed for the rocks.
\n
Now, in contrast, the Fed has only begun talking about talking about reducing its massive purchases of Treasury and agency mortgage-backed securities. That would be preparation for the initial liftoff of the Fed’s key federal-funds target rate, currently in a rock-bottom 0% to 0.25% range, in 2022 at the earliest and maybe not until 2023.
\n
The yield curve has flattened a bit in the past three months, with thespread between the two- and 10-year notenarrowing to 1.23 percentage points (still a sign of an accommodative policy), from 1.59 points on March 29, according to the St. Louis Fed.
\n
But there is also a psychological element at play in any market frenzy. “Most investors also seem to view the stock market as a force of nature itself. They do not fully realize that they themselves, as a group, determine the level of the market,” Nobel laureate Robert Shiller wrote in his now-classic bookIrrational Exuberance.
\n
“In short, the price level is driven to a certain extent by a self-fulfilling prophecy, based on similar hunches held by a vast cross-section of large and small investors and reinforced by news media that are often content to ratify this investor-induced conventional wisdom.”
\n
Readers can weigh the relevance of the point about traders’ hunches to the Robinhood IPO. As for the latter statement regarding the media, we demur; contrary opinion rather than conventional wisdom has beenBarron’scredo in the century since its founding.
","source":"lsy1610680873436","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Robinhood’s IPO Could Be a Sign the Stock Market Has Peaked
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nRobinhood’s IPO Could Be a Sign the Stock Market Has Peaked\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-07-03 10:03 GMT+8 Barron's\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Nothing succeeds like excess, as the old quip goes. Until it doesn’t, which has been the distinguishing aspect of market cycles forever and, most dramatically, in this century. Unlike last year’s pandemic-induced paroxysm, the 2000 bursting of the dot-com bubble and the 2008 financial crisis were marked by initial public offerings by companies eager to seize the moment—and investors’ money.\nAll of which is prologue to what could shape up as this cycle’s bell-ringing event, theinitial public offering of Robinhood, the online broker that pioneered zero commissions and hooked a new generation on investing and trading. Thepaperwork was filedwith the SEC this past week. Financial details about the upstart that purports to democratize investing (and, in the process, was hit with a record$70 million fine by Finra, the brokerage business’s self-regulatory body) are discussedhere, but a few salient points are buried deep in the S-1 filing.\nCustomer assets more than quadrupled, to $80.9 billion, on March 31 from the total a year earlier, with the lion’s share—some $65.1 billion—accounted for by equities. Options comprised a relatively small $2 billion in assets, but generated nearly half ($197.9 million) of the March quarter’s $420.4 million in transactions revenue. Stocks produced $133.3 million in revenue, even though assets in equities were 40 times as large as those in options. Revenue from cryptocurrencies totaled $87.6 million, with customers’ crypto assets totaling $11.6 billion.\nWhile Robinhood makes much of opening the market to neophyte investors with limited means by letting them buy fractional shares of their favorite stocks, that’s not its biggest business. Instead, it’s speculative options trading, which exploded early this year especially among the YOLO (You Only Live Once) crowd willing to stake a few bucks on cheap, about-to-expire calls of stocks talked up on Reddit.\nThere are signs that the frenzied trading, which peaked during the winter, has eased with the reopening of the economy and the return to the prepandemic normal (and with it an uptick in Covid cases after a steady decline). Iceberg said options traders have lost money due to the stock trading sideways for the month of June and that the pump around the stock looks shaky.
\n
The news didn’t stop institutions from continuously hammering AMC call contracts and on Friday options traders had purchased over $2.59 million worth. The expiration dates for the contracts ranged from today up until Dec. 17 and a few traders chose a strike price of a whopping $145.
\n
AMC’s stock broke bearishly from a symmetrical triangle it had formed through its sideways trading on Friday, but held a support level at $47.91 and bounced from it. Bulls would like to see the dip continue to be bought and for AMC to end the day by printing a hammer candlestick and closing above the 21-day exponential moving average.
\n
Why It’s Important:When a sweep order occurs, it indicates the trader wanted to get into a position quickly and is anticipating an imminent large move in stock price. A sweeper pays market price for the call or put option instead of placing a bid, which sweeps the order book of multiple exchanges to fill the order immediately.
\n
These types of call option orders are usually made by institutions, and retail investors can find watching for sweepers useful because it indicates “smart money” has entered into a position.
\n
The AMC Option Trades:Below is a look at the notable options alerts, courtesy ofBenzinga Pro:
\n
\n
At 9:42 a.m., Friday a trader executed a call sweep near the bid of 265 AMC Entertainment options with a strike price of $59 expiring on July 9. Why Analysts Aren’t Focused on Reddit, Potential Short Squeezes.","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1157159209","media":"Barrons","summary":"Shares of AMC Entertainment and GameStop posted double-digit jumps on Wednesday, continuing a rally ","content":"
Shares of AMC Entertainment and GameStop posted double-digit jumps on Wednesday, continuing a rally that highlights two radically different approaches to stocks: that of the retail traders chatting online about the potential for short squeezes, and traditional Wall Street research. The so-called meme-stock duo, generally panned by Wall Street analysts but loved on forums like Reddit’s WallStreetBets and AMCStock, have advanced mostly in tandem in the past month. AMC stock (ticker: AMC) was up 19% to $19.56 Wednesday afternoon, while GameStop (GME) gained 16% to $242.32. Shares of fellow meme stocks Express (EXPR) and BlackBerry (BB) had surged 26% and 10%, respectively.
\n
For AMC, the latest jump came despite a change in view by the only analyst tracked by FactSet who had listed the stock at Buy. B. Riley analyst Eric Wold lowered his rating to Neutral, saying in a research note the stock’s recent surge left it well above his recently set $16 target for the price. He added that he didn’t think he could justify moving that target higher, given that the price now reflected AMC’s potential to benefit as vaccinations allow the public to go to the movies, the fact that theaters remain important in film distribution, and the company’s efforts to strengthen its balance sheet.
\n
Of course, given that the shares are moving in line with GameStop and other meme stocks, there are likely other factors at play. Shares of fellow meme stocks Express (EXPR) and BlackBerry (BB) had surged 26% and 10%, respectively.\nFor AMC, the latest jump came despite a change in view by the only analyst tracked by FactSet who had listed the stock at Buy. B. Riley analyst Eric Wold lowered his rating to Neutral, saying in a research note the stock’s recent surge left it well above his recently set $16 target for the price. He added that he didn’t think he could justify moving that target higher, given that the price now reflected AMC’s potential to benefit as vaccinations allow the public to go to the movies, the fact that theaters remain important in film distribution, and the company’s efforts to strengthen its balance sheet.\nOf course, given that the shares are moving in line with GameStop and other meme stocks, there are likely other factors at play. Both AMC and GameStop stock were highly shorted by Wall Street firms who saw a chance to benefit as pandemic-related shutdowns worsened problems the pair faced before Covid-19 emerged.\nThat backfired tremendously early this year as retail investors bought the stocks, forcing the funds to buy as well to close out their negative bets.
