running through the stock market, chip makers have been hit harder than most.</p>\n<p>The iShares Semiconductor ETF&nbsp;is down over 6% from recent highs, compared to declines of 2% or less for the S&amp;P 500,Nasdaq&nbsp;Composite&nbsp;and the Dow Jones Industrial Average.</p>\n<p>Does that make chip stocks a buy? Or is this historically cyclical sector up to its old tricks and headed into a sustained downtrend that will rip your face off.</p>\n<p>A lot depends on your timeline but if you like to own stocks for years rather than rent them for days, the group is a buy. The chief reason: “It’s different this time.”</p>\n<p>Those are admittedly among the scariest words in investing. But the chip sector has changed so much it really is different now – in ways that suggest it is less likely to crush you.</p>\n<p>You’d be a fool to think there are no risks. I’ll go over those. But first, here are the three main reasons why the group is “safer” now – and six names favored by the half-dozen sector experts I’ve talked with over the past several days.</p>\n<p><b>1. The wicked witch of cyclicality is dead</b></p>\n<p>“Demand in the chip sector was always boom and bust, driven by product cycles,” says David Winborne, a portfolio manager at Impax Asset Management. “<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FBNC\">First</a> PCs, then servers, then phones.” But now demand for chips has broadened across the economy so the secular growth story is more predictable, he says.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/JE\">Just</a> look around you. Because of the increased “digitalization” of our lives and work, there’s greater diversity of end market demand from all angles. Think remote office services like <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ZM\">Zoom</a>, online shopping, cloud services, electric vehicles, 5G phones, smart factories, big data computing and even washing machines, points out Hendi Susanto, a portfolio manager and tech analyst at Gabelli Funds who is bullish on the group.</p>\n<p>“There is no aspect of the modern digital economy that can function without semiconductors,” says Motley Fool chip sector analyst John Rotonti. “That means more chips going into everything. The long-term demand is there.”</p>\n<p>He’s not kidding. Chip sector revenue will double by 2030 to $1 trillion from $465 billion in 2020, predicts William&nbsp;Blair&nbsp;analyst Greg Scolaro.</p>\n<p>All of this means the widespread supply shortages you’ve been hearing about “likely won’t be cured until sometime late next year,” says <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BAC\">Bank of America</a> chip sector analyst Vivek Arya. “That’s not just our view, but <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> confirmed by a majority of large customers.”</p>\n<p><b>2. The players have consolidated</b></p>\n<p>All up and down the production chain, from design through the various types of equipment producers to manufacturing, industry players have consolidated down into what Rotonti calls “earned” duopolies or monopolies.</p>\n<p>In chip design software, you have Cadence Design Systems&nbsp;and Synopsys.In production equipment, companies dominate specialized niches like ASML&nbsp;in extreme ultraviolet lithography&nbsp;(EUV). Manufacturing is dominated by Taiwan Semiconductor&nbsp;and Samsung Electronics.</p>\n<p>These companies earned their niche or duopoly status by being the best at what they do. This makes them interesting for investors. The consolidation also means players behave more rationally in terms of pricing and production capacity, says Rotonti.</p>\n<p><b>3. Profitability has improved</b></p>\n<p>This more rational behavior, combined with cost cutting, means profitability is now much higher than it was historically. “The economics of chip making has improved massively over past few years,” says Winbourne. Cash flow or EBITDA margins are often now over 30% whereas a decade ago they were in the 20% range.</p>\n<p>This has implications for valuation. Though chip stocks trade at about a market multiple, they appear cheap because they are better companies, points out Lamar Villere, portfolio manager with Villere &amp; Co. “They are not trading at a frothy multiple.”</p>\n<p><b>The stocks to buy</b></p>\n<p>Here are six names favored by chip experts I recently checked in with.</p>\n<p><b>New management plays</b></p>\n<p>Though Peter Karazeris, a senior equity research analyst at Thrivent, has reasons to be cautious on the group (see below), he singles out two companies whose performance may get a boost because they are under new management: Qualcomm&nbsp;and ON Semiconductor.</p>\n<p>Both have solid profitability. Qualcomm was recently hit by one-off issues like bad weather in Texas that disrupted production, but the company has good exposure to the 5G phone trend. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ON\">ON Semiconductor</a> is expanding beyond phones into new areas like autos, industrial and the Internet of Things connected-device space.</p>\n<p><b>A data center and gaming play</b></p>\n<p>Karazeris also singles out Nvidia,which gets a continuing boost from its exposure to data center and gaming device chip demand — because of its superior design prowess.</p>\n<p><b>Design tool companies</b></p>\n<p>Speaking of design, when companies like Qualcomm and NVIDIA want to design chips, they turn to the design tools supplied by Cadence Design Systems and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SNPS\">Synopsys</a>.</p>\n<p>Their software-based design tools help chip innovators create the blueprint for their chips, explains Rotonti at Motley Fool, who singles out these names. “They are not the fastest growers in the world, but they have good profit margins.” They also dominate the space.</p>\n<p><b>An EUV&nbsp;play</b></p>\n<p>To put those blueprints onto silicon in the early stages of chip production, companies like Taiwan Semiconductor and Samsung turn to ASML. Its machines use tiny bursts of light to stencil chip designs onto silicon wafers, in a process called extreme ultraviolet lithography. “No one else has figured out how to do it,” says Rotonti.</p>\n<p>In other words, it has a monopoly position in supplying machines that do this – which are necessary for any company that wants to make leading edge chips.</p>\n<p><b>Risks</b></p>\n<p>Here are some of the chief risks for chip sector investors to watch.</p>\n<p><b>Oversupply</b></p>\n<p>Chip production has become politicized. The U.S. wants more production at home so it is not vulnerable to disruptions in Chinese supply chains. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CAAS\">China</a> wants to make 70% of the chips it uses by 2025, up from 5% now, says Winborne.</p>\n<p>The upshot here is that there’s lots of government support to boost manufacturing – so there will be much more of it. The risk is oversupply at some point in the future. This might also create a pull forward in chip equipment purchases — leading to a lull down the road which could hurt sales and margin trends at equipment makers.</p>\n<p>Next, big tech companies like Alphabet,Apple&nbsp;and Ammazon.com&nbsp;are all doing their own chip design, which threatens specialized chip companies that do the same thing.</p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/QTM\">Quantum</a> computing</b></p>\n<p>Computers using chip designs based on quantum physics instead of traditional semiconductor architectures have superior performance, points out Scolaro at William Blair. “While it probably won’t become mainstream for at least another five years, quantum computing has the potential to transform everything from technology to healthcare.”</p>\n<p><b>A disturbing signal</b></p>\n<p>A blend of global purchasing managers (PMI) indexes peaked in April and then decelerated for three months. Meanwhile chip sales growth continued. Normally the two follow the same trend, points out Karazeris, who tracks this indicator at Thrivent. He chalks the divergence up to inventory building which is less sustainable than true end-market demand. So, he takes the divergence as a bearish signal for the chip sector.</p>\n<p>Another cautionary sign comes from the forecasted weakness in pricing for dynamic random-access memory&nbsp;(DRAM) chips. “These are typically things you see at tops of cycles not the bottoms,” says Karazeris.</p>\n<p>But it’s also possible the slowdown in the global PMI is more a reflection of chip shortages than a sign that the shortages aren’t real (and are just inventory building). “The divergence doesn’t necessarily mean that chip orders are going to roll over and die. It means chip manufacturing has to catch up,” says Leuthold economist and strategist Jim Paulsen.</p>\n<p>Ford,for example, just announced it had to curtail production because of chip shortages, not a shortfall in underlying demand.</p>\n<p>Paulsen predicts decent economic growth is sustainable because of factors like high savings rates, the rebound in employment and incomes as well as pent-up demand for big ticket items. While history may signal trouble ahead, it also tells us that each and every double-digit decline has been a buying opportunity. Eventually, every big drop in the major indexes is erased by a bull-market rally. It's been retaining 98% of its clients, has seen existing clients spend 23% to 47% more on a year-over-year basis for the past 12 quarters, and recently reported that 64% of its customers have purchased at least four cloud module subscriptions. Scaling with its customers is CrowdStrike's ticket to big-time cash flow expansion.</p>\n<p><b>Facebook</b></p>\n<p>Brand-name businesses can make patient investors a fortune, and social media giant<b>Facebook</b>(NASDAQ:FB)is the perfect example.</p>\n<p>When the curtain closed on March, Facebook tallied 2.85 billion monthly active users (MAU) visiting its namesake site and an additional 600 million unique MAUs visiting WhatsApp or Instagram, which it also owns. All told, this equates to44% of the global populationinteracting with its owned sites each month. There's simply no social media platform businesses can go to get their message to a broader (or potentially targeted) audience, which is why Facebook ad-pricing power is so strong.</p>\n<p>But here's the kicker: Facebookhasn't even put the pedal to the metal. Although it's on track to generate more than $100 billion in advertising revenue in 2021, nearly all of these ad sales are coming from its namesake site and Instagram. Why Investors Should Watch This Case.","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1195581477","media":"Barrons","summary":"Online platforms underpinning the dominance of Apple and Google will come under scrutiny in the U.K.","content":"<p>Online platforms underpinning the dominance of Apple and Google will come under scrutiny in the U.K. from a regulator with a record of securing changes from Big Tech.</p>\n<p>The Competition and Markets Authority, or CMA, announced on Tuesday that it had opened a study into the “effective duopoly” that Google—owned by Alphabet— as well as Apple have over the major gateways to the internet.</p>\n<p>The regulator will investigate whether the technology giants’ control over operating systems, app platforms, and web browsers—called “mobile ecosystems”—results in harm to consumers or the stifling of competition on digital platforms.</p>\n<p>“Apple and Google control the major gateways through which people download apps or browse the web on their mobiles—whether they want to shop, play games, stream music or watch TV,” said Andrea Coscelli, the chief executive of the CMA. “We’re looking into whether this could be creating problems for consumers and the businesses that want to reach people through their phones.”</p>\n<p>The two tech giants are by far the most dominant companies when it comes to controlling access to the internet, especially via mobile devices.</p>\n<p>Most people use a mobile device running on one of their operating systems—iOS or Android, respectively—and download applications from either the App Store or Google Play. The two groups’ web browsers, Safari from Apple and Google’s Chrome, are similarly popular on both mobile and desktop devices.</p>\n<p>The CMA said its concern is that this level of dominance could lead to reduced innovation and consumers paying higher prices for devices and apps. The regulator will also investigate whether consumers may be paying higher prices for other goods and services due to associated advertising costs.</p>\n<p>In addition, the CMA’s study will target whether Google and Apple’s market power has knock-on effects on other businesses, such as app developers.</p>\n<p>The study, which could lead to recommendations to government or the issuance of guidance to businesses, must be concluded within 12 months, and the regulator is welcoming views on the issue until Jul. 26.</p>\n<p>In response to the investigation, a Google spokesperson said that “Android provides people with more choice than any other mobile platform in deciding which apps they use, and enables thousands of developers and manufacturers to build successful businesses.”</p>\n<p>“We welcome the CMA’s efforts to understand the details and differences between platforms before designing new rules,” the spokesperson added.</p>\n<p>Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.</p>\n<p>The move from the CMA comes amid a flurry of regulatory pressure on Big Tech in the U.K. as well as in the European Union. On Jun. 11, the CMA announced that it would have&nbsp;a key role in overseeing Google’s plans&nbsp;to remove third-party cookies—which track user data—from Chrome, as part of commitments to overcome competition concerns.</p>\n<p>And on Jun. 4, regulators in both the U.K. and EU&nbsp;opened formal investigations into Facebook&nbsp;over whether it unfairly used user data to help its classified ads platform, Marketplace, beat out the competition. In the U.K., that investigation will also look into&nbsp;Facebook’s&nbsp;new dating platform.</p>\n<p>“Our ongoing work into big tech has already uncovered some worrying trends and we know consumers and businesses could be harmed if they go unchecked,” Coscelli said.</p>\n<p>In April,EU regulators charged Apple with abusing its dominant position&nbsp;in the music-streaming market by imposing restrictive rules on the App Store, in a landmark move. The CMA has had a&nbsp;similar ongoing probein&nbsp;to the App Store since March. The cases follow a similar pattern to a legal suit Apple faces in the U.S.,where it was sued by Epic Games, the developer of the popular videogame “Fortnite,” over App Store restrictions.</p>\n<p>In the U.K.,the CMA launched a new body to regulate Big Tech&nbsp;in April. The Digital Markets Unit is expected to have the power to levy fines by next year.</p>\n<p><b>Looking ahead.</b>While the CMA’s launch of a study into Google and Apple’s platforms is an early step, it shouldn’t be ignored.</p>\n<p>Just last week, the regulator proved it had the teeth to regulate Big Tech by announcing its role in overseeing changes to Chrome’s treatment of user data through the new Privacy Sandbox—which impacts advertisers and publishers. And while the likes of Android, Play, and Chrome represent much bigger fish than the Privacy Sandbox alone—to say nothing of Apple’s mobile ecosystems—the CMA just might have the guts to demand substantive change.</p>\n<p>As Big Tech comes under increased scrutiny in Europe and around the world, including in the U.S., investors should watch how the CMA treats these key elements of Apple and Google’s businesses. The injected vaccine then stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies and T-cell immune responses.\nThe Vaccine Doses: The vaccines from each of the three companies require two doses. Each dose consists of 30 mcg for Pfizer and 100 mcg for Moderna, while for Novavax, each vaccine dose consists of 5 mcg of NVX-CoV2371 and 50 mcg of Matrix-M1 adjuvant that are co-formulated.\nThe interval between the two doses — the priming and booster dose — is 21 days each for Pfizer and Novavax and 28 days for Moderna.\nThe Target Population: The original late-stage trial of Pfizer-BioNTech evaluated the vaccine in participants ages 16 years and older. It is packaged in a ready-to-use liquid formulation in 10-dose vials.\nVaccine Efficacy: Interim data from Pfizer-BioNTech's Phase 3 trials released in December showed the vaccine was well-tolerated and demonstrated 95% efficacy in preventing COVID-19 in those without prior infection seven days or more after the second dose. Updated top-line results released for up to six months after the second dose confirmed efficacy at 91.3%.\nThe vaccine was found 100% effective against severe disease as defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and 95.3% effective against severe COVID-19 as defined by the FDA. It was also proved effective against the U.K. strain in lab studies.\nModerna's vaccine showed efficacy of 94.1% against COVID-19. That more than doubles its 151-year average, and it's the highest level in nearly two decades. The previous four times the Shiller P/E surpassed and held above 30 during a bull market rally, the indexsubsequently declined by a minimum of 20%.</p>\n<p>Make no mistake about it -- a stock market crash is coming.</p>\n<p>Every crash or correction is an opportunity for patient investors to make money</p>\n<p>However, a crash is no reason to duck and cover. While history may signal trouble ahead, it also tells us that each and every double-digit decline has been a buying opportunity. Eventually, every big drop in the major indexes is erased by a bull-market rally. This means cloud-based cybersecurity stock<b>CrowdStrike Holdings</b>(NASDAQ:CRWD)can thrive in any environment.</p>\n<p>CrowdStrike's successderives from its cloud-native Falcon security platform. Because it's built in the cloud and relies on artificial intelligence, it's growing smarter at identifying and responding to threats all the time. It's currently overseeing 6 trillion events on a weekly basis, and it's far more cost-effective at protecting data than on-premise solutions.</p>\n<p>We can also look to the company's income statements to see clear-cut evidence that businesses favor CrowdStrike's cybersecurity platform. It's been retaining 98% of its clients, has seen existing clients spend 23% to 47% more on a year-over-year basis for the past 12 quarters, and recently reported that 64% of its customers have purchased at least four cloud module subscriptions. Scaling with its customers is CrowdStrike's ticket to big-time cash flow expansion.</p>\n<p><b>Facebook</b></p>\n<p>Brand-name businesses can make patient investors a fortune, and social media giant<b>Facebook</b>(NASDAQ:FB)is the perfect example.</p>\n<p>When the curtain closed on March, Facebook tallied 2.85 billion monthly active users (MAU) visiting its namesake site and an additional 600 million unique MAUs visiting WhatsApp or Instagram, which it also owns. All told, this equates to44% of the global populationinteracting with its owned sites each month. There's simply no social media platform businesses can go to get their message to a broader (or potentially targeted) audience, which is why Facebook ad-pricing power is so strong.</p>\n<p>But here's the kicker: Facebookhasn't even put the pedal to the metal. Although it's on track to generate more than $100 billion in advertising revenue in 2021, nearly all of these ad sales are coming from its namesake site and Instagram. WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, which are two of the six most-visited social sites in the world, aren't being meaningfully monetized as of yet. Further, the company's Oculus virtual reality devices are still in the early stage of their growth. Or is this historically cyclical sector up to its old tricks and headed into a sustained downtrend that will rip your face off.</p>\n<p>A lot depends on your timeline but if you like to own stocks for years rather than rent them for days, the group is a buy. The chief reason: “It’s different this time.”</p>\n<p>Those are admittedly among the scariest words in investing. But the chip sector has changed so much it really is different now – in ways that suggest it is less likely to crush you.</p>\n<p>You’d be a fool to think there are no risks. I’ll go over those. But first, here are the three main reasons why the group is “safer” now – and six names favored by the half-dozen sector experts I’ve talked with over the past several days.</p>\n<p><b>1. The wicked witch of cyclicality is dead</b></p>\n<p>“Demand in the chip sector was always boom and bust, driven by product cycles,” says David Winborne, a portfolio manager at Impax Asset Management. “<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FBNC\">First</a> PCs, then servers, then phones.” But now demand for chips has broadened across the economy so the secular growth story is more predictable, he says.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/JE\">Just</a> look around you. Because of the increased “digitalization” of our lives and work, there’s greater diversity of end market demand from all angles. Think remote office services like <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ZM\">Zoom</a>, online shopping, cloud services, electric vehicles, 5G phones, smart factories, big data computing and even washing machines, points out Hendi Susanto, a portfolio manager and tech analyst at Gabelli Funds who is bullish on the group.</p>\n<p>“There is no aspect of the modern digital economy that can function without semiconductors,” says Motley Fool chip sector analyst John Rotonti. “That means more chips going into everything. The long-term demand is there.”</p>\n<p>He’s not kidding. Chip sector revenue will double by 2030 to $1 trillion from $465 billion in 2020, predicts William&nbsp;Blair&nbsp;analyst Greg Scolaro.</p>\n<p>All of this means the widespread supply shortages you’ve been hearing about “likely won’t be cured until sometime late next year,” says <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BAC\">Bank of America</a> chip sector analyst Vivek Arya. “That’s not just our view, but <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> confirmed by a majority of large customers.”</p>\n<p><b>2. The players have consolidated</b></p>\n<p>All up and down the production chain, from design through the various types of equipment producers to manufacturing, industry players have consolidated down into what Rotonti calls “earned” duopolies or monopolies.</p>\n<p>In chip design software, you have Cadence Design Systems&nbsp;and Synopsys.In production equipment, companies dominate specialized niches like ASML&nbsp;in extreme ultraviolet lithography&nbsp;(EUV). Manufacturing is dominated by Taiwan Semiconductor&nbsp;and Samsung Electronics.</p>\n<p>These companies earned their niche or duopoly status by being the best at what they do. This makes them interesting for investors. The consolidation also means players behave more rationally in terms of pricing and production capacity, says Rotonti.</p>\n<p><b>3. Profitability has improved</b></p>\n<p>This more rational behavior, combined with cost cutting, means profitability is now much higher than it was historically. “The economics of chip making has improved massively over past few years,” says Winbourne. Cash flow or EBITDA margins are often now over 30% whereas a decade ago they were in the 20% range.</p>\n<p>This has implications for valuation. Though chip stocks trade at about a market multiple, they appear cheap because they are better companies, points out Lamar Villere, portfolio manager with Villere &amp; Co. “They are not trading at a frothy multiple.”</p>\n<p><b>The stocks to buy</b></p>\n<p>Here are six names favored by chip experts I recently checked in with.</p>\n<p><b>New management plays</b></p>\n<p>Though Peter Karazeris, a senior equity research analyst at Thrivent, has reasons to be cautious on the group (see below), he singles out two companies whose performance may get a boost because they are under new management: Qualcomm&nbsp;and ON Semiconductor.</p>\n<p>Both have solid profitability. Qualcomm was recently hit by one-off issues like bad weather in Texas that disrupted production, but the company has good exposure to the 5G phone trend. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ON\">ON Semiconductor</a> is expanding beyond phones into new areas like autos, industrial and the Internet of Things connected-device space.</p>\n<p><b>A data center and gaming play</b></p>\n<p>Karazeris also singles out Nvidia,which gets a continuing boost from its exposure to data center and gaming device chip demand — because of its superior design prowess.</p>\n<p><b>Design tool companies</b></p>\n<p>Speaking of design, when companies like Qualcomm and NVIDIA want to design chips, they turn to the design tools supplied by Cadence Design Systems and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SNPS\">Synopsys</a>.</p>\n<p>Their software-based design tools help chip innovators create the blueprint for their chips, explains Rotonti at Motley Fool, who singles out these names. “They are not the fastest growers in the world, but they have good profit margins.” They also dominate the space.</p>\n<p><b>An EUV&nbsp;play</b></p>\n<p>To put those blueprints onto silicon in the early stages of chip production, companies like Taiwan Semiconductor and Samsung turn to ASML. Its machines use tiny bursts of light to stencil chip designs onto silicon wafers, in a process called extreme ultraviolet lithography. “No one else has figured out how to do it,” says Rotonti.</p>\n<p>In other words, it has a monopoly position in supplying machines that do this – which are necessary for any company that wants to make leading edge chips.</p>\n<p><b>Risks</b></p>\n<p>Here are some of the chief risks for chip sector investors to watch.</p>\n<p><b>Oversupply</b></p>\n<p>Chip production has become politicized. The U.S. wants more production at home so it is not vulnerable to disruptions in Chinese supply chains. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CAAS\">China</a> wants to make 70% of the chips it uses by 2025, up from 5% now, says Winborne.</p>\n<p>The upshot here is that there’s lots of government support to boost manufacturing – so there will be much more of it. The risk is oversupply at some point in the future. This might also create a pull forward in chip equipment purchases — leading to a lull down the road which could hurt sales and margin trends at equipment makers.</p>\n<p>Next, big tech companies like Alphabet,Apple&nbsp;and Ammazon.com&nbsp;are all doing their own chip design, which threatens specialized chip companies that do the same thing.</p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/QTM\">Quantum</a> computing</b></p>\n<p>Computers using chip designs based on quantum physics instead of traditional semiconductor architectures have superior performance, points out Scolaro at William Blair. “While it probably won’t become mainstream for at least another five years, quantum computing has the potential to transform everything from technology to healthcare.”</p>\n<p><b>A disturbing signal</b></p>\n<p>A blend of global purchasing managers (PMI) indexes peaked in April and then decelerated for three months. Meanwhile chip sales growth continued. Normally the two follow the same trend, points out Karazeris, who tracks this indicator at Thrivent. He chalks the divergence up to inventory building which is less sustainable than true end-market demand. So, he takes the divergence as a bearish signal for the chip sector.</p>\n<p>Another cautionary sign comes from the forecasted weakness in pricing for dynamic random-access memory&nbsp;(DRAM) chips. “These are typically things you see at tops of cycles not the bottoms,” says Karazeris.</p>\n<p>But it’s also possible the slowdown in the global PMI is more a reflection of chip shortages than a sign that the shortages aren’t real (and are just inventory building). “The divergence doesn’t necessarily mean that chip orders are going to roll over and die. It means chip manufacturing has to catch up,” says Leuthold economist and strategist Jim Paulsen.</p>\n<p>Ford,for example, just announced it had to curtail production because of chip shortages, not a shortfall in underlying demand.</p>\n<p>Paulsen predicts decent economic growth is sustainable because of factors like high savings rates, the rebound in employment and incomes as well as pent-up demand for big ticket items.
