Apple is a quintessential buy-and-hold stock.Apple's fiscal 2021 was terrific, and the first quarter of fiscal 2022 saw a quarterly record high for revenue. Fiscal 2021 sales reached $366 billion, an increase of 33%. But while sales were impressive, Apple's secret sauce is actually in the cash flow.The company has been able to return bushels of money to shareholders in the form of dividends and stock repurchases. As shown below, Apple's operating margin reached 30% in fiscal 2021, and it exceeded 33% in the first quarter of fiscal 2022. For example, Germany has announced that it will increase defense spending to over 2% of its GDP.This includes the purchase of 35 F-35 fighter jets made by Lockheed Martin. We can expect that defense spending will be robust across NATO nations for some time as a result of the tragic action in Ukraine. TargetFor those who are looking for one of the most consistent dividend performers of all time, Target ( TGT -1.35% ) might be the answer. Management has increased its annual dividend for 50 consecutive years. The company is currently paying $0.90 per share per quarter for a yield of over 1.5%. Target also repurchases its own stock, including $7.2 billion worth -- nearly 7% of the current market cap -- in 2021.Target's results have been impressive as well, which suggests that its streak of dividend increases is likely to continue. The company has thrived in the face of e-commerce competition. Comparable-store sales grew by over 12% in 2021. And online sales have grown by $13 billion since 2019 and now account for 19% of all sales.Target achieves terrific leverage by fulfilling its digital orders through its existing stores. Both stocks are now under $20 compared to all-time intraday highs of $64.60 for Nio and $24.37 for Ford.Here's why Nio and Ford are two electric vehicle (EV) stocks worth considering now.A transitional yearHoward Smith (Nio): Nio's American depositary shares recently dropped below $15 for the first time since the summer of 2020. At that point in time, Nio had just surpassed its 50,000th delivery of an electric car. By the end of February 2022, the company had delivered more than 182,000 vehicles.Demand remains strong enough for the company, along with its state-owned manufacturing partner, to more than double production capacity to up to 300,000 vehicles per year. Part of the reason it that the company has new products coming this year.Its ET7 luxury sedan is due to begin shipping this month, followed by the smaller ET5 sedan later in the fall. Nio is also expanding outside of China. Europe is expected to be one of the largest EV markets globally, and the company has already established a presence there.In a further sign of its expansion plans outside of China, Nio reportedly has a new agreement with the state-owned China National Technical Import and Export Corporation to pursue the construction of EV infrastructure and support services in overseas markets, according to industry follower CnEVPost.The report says the agreement will focus on Europe to \"provide solutions for the export, installation, commissioning, and delivery of Nio's battery swap stations.\" Those swap stations allow Nio customers to purchase vehicles with lower up-front costs along with a subscription plan for battery replacements at the swap stations. The company says it takes only minutes, and is another form of income for Nio as it works to grow its customer base.While risks related to both the business and outside factors have driven Nio shares to a multi-year low, some investors might feel those risks are now priced in, making it a good time to consider buying the stock.Both of Ford's business units have their advantagesDaniel Foelber (Ford): Like most EV stocks, Ford has been absolutely hammered in recent weeks. We aren't even through the first three months of the year, and the stock has already climbed as high as $24.37 per share and as low as $15.51.Due to heightened market volatility and Ford's heavy investment in the EV industry, it could continue to be a volatile stock. However, investors would be better-suited turning their attention to Ford's long-term future, which is brighter than ever before.On March 2, Ford announced it was splitting its business into two divisions: the Model e division, which will focus on EVs; and the Blue division, which will be responsible for Ford's legacy internal combustion engine (ICE) business. The business units are expected to work in tandem, with Ford Blue supplying the bulk of the profit to support Ford Model e, which is expected to contribute the majority of Ford's long-term growth.Ford is an attractive automotive stock because it is already profitable and is less vulnerable to short-term supply chain challenges that have stunted the growth of other automakers like Lucid Group and Rivian Automotive and resulted in unsustainable cash burn.Ford also pays a quarterly dividend of $0.10 per share for an annualized yield of 2.5%, which makes it one of the few electric car stocks that is also a worthy dividend stock. And to top it all off, it's not expensive relative to its earnings and growth rate.Lastly, Ford has been much more vocal than its competitors when it comes to making sizable EV investments early and setting short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals. It expects to produce 600,000 EVs per year by the end of 2023 and more than 2 million EVs per year by 2026. By 2030, it aims to have EVs represent half of its global production volume, which is higher than its earlier estimate for them to make up 40% of global volume by that year.By setting a variety of goals with different time horizons, investors are able to hold Ford accountable and better track its progress, which is better than companies that only have vague 2030 or 2050 goals with little to no clarification of how those goals will be achieved.Add it all up, and Ford stands out as the single most-balanced automaker to buy now.A low entry pointFor less than $20, an investor can pick up a share of Nio or Ford and become a part owner in an exciting business.One of the advantages of being an individual investor is that you get to decide the timing and extent of your exposure to a company. Lower nominally-priced stocks like Nio and Ford make it easier to gradually accumulate shares to make sure a position doesn't become overweight in a portfolio.Nio and Ford have both drummed up healthy demand for their EV products. A 1994 agreement underpinning Ukrainian security failed to prevent Russian aggression against its neighbour.Although Moscow and Kyiv both said on Wednesday that they had made progress on the terms of a deal, Ukrainian officials remain sceptical Russian President Vladimir Putin is fully committed to peace and worry that Moscow could be buying time to regroup its forces and resume its offensive.Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, told the Financial Times that any deal would involve “the troops of the Russian Federation in any case leaving the territory of Ukraine” captured since the invasion began on February 24 — namely southern regions along the Azov and Black Seas, as well as territory to the east and north of Kyiv.Ukraine would maintain its armed forces but would be obliged to stay outside military alliances such as Nato and refrain from hosting foreign military bases on its territory.Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday that neutrality for Ukraine based on the status of Austria or Sweden was a possibility.“This option is really being discussed now, and is one that can be considered neutral,” said Peskov.Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, said that “absolutely specific wordings” were “close to being agreed” in the negotiations.Despite the progress in peace talks, Ukrainian cities came under heavy shelling for a third consecutive night while Kyiv said it was launching a counter-offensive against Russian invaders.In a virtual address to members of Congress on Wednesday, Zelensky pleaded for the US to enforce a no-fly zone or provide fighter jets or other means to fend off Russia’s attack on his country, and impose harsher economic sanctions on Moscow.In a dramatic appeal, Zelensky said Ukraine needed America’s support after Russia had launched a “brutal offensive against our values”. Investors are incredibly resilient.</p>\n<p>Some things that didn’t matter:a burst bubble in clean-energy stocks;a sharp rise in Treasury yields(to March);a big fall in Treasury yields(since March); China’s crackdown on moneymaking; the Federal Reserve’sshift toward tapering bond purchases; and the rise of the Delta variant.</p>\n<p>On the optimistic side, it is great that the market has been pushed up by a variety of forces, not by wild excess in a single area. We need not worry that the bubble in clean energy will burst and bring down the market, because it has already burst without bringing down the market.</p>\n<p>Throughout all this, the stock market has risen steadily,without a 5% fall since shortly before the election last year. Every time part of the market—technology stocks, cheap stocks, smaller stocks, oil stocks, strong-balance-sheet stocks—stops performing, something else steps in to rescue the broader index. The market seems invulnerable to bad news, and that is unusual. On the face of it, it is also scary, suggesting investors are complacent about danger.</p>\n<p>It is far from unprecedented to go a long time without a correction, with 10 episodes since 1963 when the market lasted more than 200 trading days without a 5% drop. But they were different from the recent run. In every other case, the market was far calmer below the surface. This time, major events led to big swings between sectors, size and types of stock, but none disturbed its steady rise.</p>\n<p>Similarly, the stimulus- and vaccine-driven willingness to take risk across every asset class faded from March onward, so we shouldn’t be too concerned about a switch in investor sentiment. Again, it has already happened.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7d8b995934c7f60fadb5834dd078e232\" tg-width=\"320\" tg-height=\"412\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\">Yet,I find it disconcerting that the market seems to go up no matter what. Good news on the economy pushes up stocks sensitive to growth, such as manufacturers and banks. Troubling news on the economy means lower bond yields and so pushes up stocks with profits far in the future (see: Big Tech) whose expansion depends on innovation rather than economic growth, which I understand. With more savings going into stocks than is cashed out or soaked up by IPOs, the price has to rise. It isn’t a satisfactory story, but it kind of works.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/37942e27b25662943d254580733d2954\" tg-width=\"325\" tg-height=\"413\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\">In both good and bad times investors want to buy stocks, so the S&amp;P goes up. But<i>which</i>stocks they choose to buy differs between good and bad times. In good times they want risk-on stocks (cheap value, cyclicals, smaller companies, emerging markets). In bad times they want risk-off stocks (growth, defensive firms, larger companies, developed markets and especially the U.S.).</p>\n<p>The problem with TINA is that the justification for stocks isn’t that they offer good returns in the future, but that they offer better returns than bonds. Bonds offer miserable returns—a guaranteed loss after inflation for 30 years on Treasury inflation-protected securities—so doing better than that isn’t saying much. If lower rewards came with lower risks, that would be fine, but at best the risks are as high as ever, perhaps much higher.</p>\n<p>A simplistic way to quantify how much lower the rewards of stocks are likely to be is to use the earnings yield, the inverse of the forward price/earnings ratio. If companies match analyst profit forecasts, future returns should be about 4%—only slightly higher than was suggested by the measure at the height of the dot-com bubble in 2000. If corporate earnings miss forecasts, future returns could be substantially lower. If valuations fall too, returns are doubly hit, as they were after the dot-com bubble burst, when returns ended up negative for years.</p>\n<p>Quantifying risks is much harder. Inflation risk is higher than before, and so are political (tax and regulation) and geopolitical (trade and supply chain) threats to stocks. The risk that analysts have horribly overestimated earnings or companies are massively overstating earnings is at least as high as usual. Central banks are sure to try to help if stocks plunge, but can’t use the traditional support of rate cuts. Alternative tools such as negative rates and buying a wider range of assets are available, but their risks are less well understood.</p>\n<p>Getting a lower reward for the same or higher risk may still be acceptable, given how expensive the safer alternatives are. We need not worry that the bubble in clean energy will burst and bring down the market, because it has already burst without bringing down the market.\nThroughout all this, the stock market has risen steadily,without a 5% fall since shortly before the election last year. Every time part of the market—technology stocks, cheap stocks, smaller stocks, oil stocks, strong-balance-sheet stocks—stops performing, something else steps in to rescue the broader index. The market seems invulnerable to bad news, and that is unusual. On the face of it, it is also scary, suggesting investors are complacent about danger.\nIt is far from unprecedented to go a long time without a correction, with 10 episodes since 1963 when the market lasted more than 200 trading days without a 5% drop. But they were different from the recent run. In every other case, the market was far calmer below the surface. This time, major events led to big swings between sectors, size and types of stock, but none disturbed its steady rise.\nSimilarly, the stimulus- and vaccine-driven willingness to take risk across every asset class faded from March onward, so we shouldn’t be too concerned about a switch in investor sentiment. Again, it has already happened.\nYet,I find it disconcerting that the market seems to go up no matter what. Good news on the economy pushes up stocks sensitive to growth, such as manufacturers and banks. Profits were still elusive with a net loss of $134.4 million, but that figure was much improved from a net loss of $946.1 million in the prior-year quarter.Investors welcomed the improving financials while acknowledging the movie theater kingpin still has much work to do. Lost in the shuffle, perhaps, were a couple of words uttered by AMC CEO Adam Aron that could help turn the tide for the beleaguered multiplex and eventually generate billions of dollars for the company -- and investors.Image source: Getty Images.One of these things is not like the otherSeveral years ago, AMC tried a novel experiment when the company increased weekend movie prices above what it charged during the week. The test worked so well, it became permanent. Furthermore, AMC promotes Discount Tuesdays to its loyalty members, including AMC Stubs A-List, Premiere, and Insider subscribers. AMC markets the ticket prices as offering \"blockbuster savings\" with entry discounted as much as 50% below full-priced tickets.The company also charges higher ticket prices for premium formats, including IMAX and Dolby Cinema.The two words worth billionsIn a variation on that theme, AMC announced during its earnings call that it was testing \"variable pricing\" -- which coincided with the opening of the blockbuster film The Batman.\"Currently, our prices for The Batman, which opens this week, are slightly higher than the prices we're charging for other movies playing in the same theaters at the same time,\" Aron said. Reports suggest ticket prices to see the Caped Crusader can run anywhere from $1 to $1.50 higher than tickets for other feature films. The surcharge is expected to run for eight days, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.Aron went on to point out that variable pricing is standard practice at the company's theaters in Europe, where audiences pay \"a premium for the best seats in the house,\" similar to what spectators experience at sporting events, concerts, and live theater. AMC believes this opportunity offers considerable upside.Even in the range of $1 to $1.50 per ticket, it's easy to imagine a scenario where AMC can parlay its variable pricing into a noticeable uptick in revenue.
