Previously, iPads used A-series chips, which are what powers the company’s iPhones. Apple says it is the most powerful tablet on the market.\nIt also includes an improved USB-C connector that will allow the iPad to connect to higher-resolution monitors and download images from a camera more quickly.\nThe 12.9-inch iPad Pro features an improved screen using an array of LEDs that is brighter and has better color resolution than previous displays using a technology called Mini-LED.\niPad ProSource: Apple Inc.\nThe iPad Pro will also have a 12-megapixel front-facing camera with an ultrawide lens that can automatically pan to keep human subjects in the shot.\nSome models will include 5G support, Apple said. It will ship in the second half of May with the new Apple TV 4K, which costs $179 or $199 depending on the model.\n— Jessica Bursztynsky\nApple updates Apple TV 4K box with new processor\nApple announced that its Apple TV 4K box has been updated with a new processor, and it will be able to handle high frame rate HDR video which will result in displaying smoother, more colorful sports events.\nIt will also include a new feature that will use the iPhone's camera to tune the TV's picture quality.\nIt also comes with a completely redesigned remote made of aluminum with physical buttons, instead of the old remote’s touchpad. It can also control your TV’s power. Instead of a touchpad, it has a wheel for controlling the display.\nIt starts at $179 for 32GB of storage. While chip makers’ comments are setting off alarms, car makers—whose stocks are mostly off to a great start in 2021—are downplaying the problem.</p>\n<p>A lack of microchips that make modern cars function has resulted in unplanned downtime for many auto makers. Ford Motor (ticker: F), for instance, said it was extending outages&nbsp;at three assembly plants Thursday.Terrence Curtin, CEO of electrical component supplier&nbsp;TE Connectivity&nbsp;(TEL) told<i>Barron’s</i> this week that roughly 1 million cars weren’t built in the first quarter because of the shortage. That is about 5% of global auto output. And General Motors (GM) called the shortage a billion dollar headwind to 2021 operating profits when the company reported fourth quarter numbers earlier this year.</p>\n<p>Auto stocks, however, have been largely unaffected by the issue. GM and Ford shares, for instance, are both up 36% year to date. Parts suppliers TE and BorgWarner (BWA) are up 9% and 28%, respectively. Car dealer Auto Nation (AN) stock is also on fire as well, up about 38% so far in 2021.</p>\n<p>Demand is strong, rebounding from the 2020 pandemic-induced recession. The optimism for higher sales in 2021 and 2022 is trumping any concern about near term disruption. But the disruption might get worse before it gets better and auto investors will have to square that reality with their outlooks as more company report first quarter numbers.</p>\n<p>Ford is set to report earnings April 28. GM follows on May 5. Daimler (DAI.Germany), for its part, reported&nbsp;first quarter numbers Friday. Things still look good. Car sales rose, product mix was favorable and profitability improved. Management doesn’t sound too worried about microchips. “The impact from semiconductor&nbsp;shortage&nbsp;was not very material in the first quarter,” said CFO Harald Wilhelm&nbsp;on an investor call. Second quarter impacts are possible, but “we anticipate to recover part of the lost volumes by the end of the year.”</p>\n<p>Daimler stock is down 1.1% in overseas trading. Year to date, share are up about 28%.</p>\n<p>Stellantis (STLA) CEO Carlos Tavares sounded a little more cautious in an April 15 conference noting that production impacts would extend into the second half of 2021 and that “visibility on the speed at which this is going to be fixed is reasonably low right now.”</p>\n<p>Along with some auto makers,&nbsp;Intel&nbsp;(INTC) and&nbsp;Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing&nbsp;(TSM) have also reported first quarter results. Taiwan Semi went first, saying the automotive shortage should be “greatly reduced” by the third quarter of 2021.</p>\n<p>Resolution is good news, but Q3 is a little later than auto companies expected at the beginning of the year. Intel management was a little more cautious on their&nbsp;earnings conference call. They said the shortage might stretch on for longer than investors currently expect. “The industry is now challenged by a&nbsp;shortage&nbsp;of foundry capacity, substrates and components,” commented CEO Patrick Gelsinger&nbsp;Thursday evening. “It will take a couple of years for the ecosystem to make the significant investments to address these&nbsp;shortages.”</p>\n<p>Investors should get ready to hear more about shortages extending deeper into 2021. The stocks won’t get a pass unless companies keep putting up good numbers like Diamler. Auto suppler Gentex (GNTX), for instance, missed&nbsp;first quarter sales estimates because of the shortage. The company reported $484 million in first quarter sales Friday. Wall Street was looking for $491 million. Gentex management estimated that $45 million in sales was lost due to the shortage.</p>\n<p>Gentex shares are down about 1% in early trading. That isn’t a big move, but it is a wobble with the S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 0.5% and 0.2%, respectively.</p>\n<p>The chip issue isn’t going away. The stocks won’t get a pass unless companies keep putting up good numbers like Diamler. Auto suppler Gentex (GNTX), for instance, missed first quarter sales estimates because of the shortage. The company reported $484 million in first quarter sales Friday. Wall Street was looking for $491 million. Gentex management estimated that $45 million in sales was lost due to the shortage.\nGentex shares are down about 1% in early trading. China is one of DBS' six core markets, together with Singapore, Indonesia, India, Hong Kong and Taiwan.\nDBS chief executive officer Piyush Gupta said: \"We see this as a highly complementary strategic partnership that will allow us to double down on the Greater Bay Area and leverage SZRCB's local network and know-how to deepen DBS' Greater Bay Area strategy.\n\"At the same time, we would be able to support the continued growth and digital transformation of SZRCB through our regional presence and digital capabilities.\"\nThe deal strategically positions DBS to increase its stake in the Shenzhen lender after China eased rules on foreign ownership in the financial services sector, the bank said in its statement on Tuesday (April 20).\nThe investment has been approved by the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Shenzhen office of the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission and is expected to be completed following approval by the China Securities Regulatory Commission.\nUpon the completion of the deal, DBS will become the largest shareholder in SZRCB and will have representation on the Chinese bank's board of directors.\nDBS said the investment will have less than 0.2 percentage points impact to the group's capital ratios, and is expected to be immediately accretive to earnings and return on equity (ROE).\nThe bank will acquire 1.35 billion new shares in SZRCB at 3.91 yuan per share, representing 1.01 times the book value per share of SZRCB as of end-December 2020. DBS said it intends to fund the investment using internal cash resources.\nSZRCB operates one of the largest bank branch networks in Shenzhen, where 210 of its 217 branches and over 2,100 self-service terminals are located.\nWith more than 5 million active retail customers and over 170,000 active corporate clients, SZRCB had 404 billion (S$82 billion) of deposits and 519 billion yuan of total assets at the end of last year.\nApproximately 40 per cent of its total loans are in the retail segment and the remaining 60 per cent in the corporate segment, largely to local small and medium enterprises.\nFor the year ended Dec 31, 2020, the Shenzhen bank generated 4.8 billion yuan in net profit after tax.
