If the company were, say, a subscription software provider that was expected to grow at a quick and steady pace for many years, those ratios <i>might</i> make sense. That extreme volatility makes them mostly useless as real-world currencies. A business that accepts bitcoin as payment, for example, is almost certainly converting that bitcoin into dollars or another real currency immediately.</p><p>For cryptocurrency to have any real utility, the volatility needs to cool off. If that were to happen, there would be little reason for masses of people to speculate on cryptocurrency prices, given that there would no longer be the potential for quick and massive returns. If speculation dies down, so does trading volume. And if trading volume drops, Coinbase's revenue craters.</p><p>One reason people are willing to pay excessive fees to buy and sell cryptocurrencies are the massive price swings. Paying $2.99 to buy $100 worth of Bitcoin, which is what Coinbase charges, doesn't make any sense if you don't expect the value of Bitcoin to rise.</p><h2>If cryptocurrencies remain speculative trading instruments, it's bad for Coinbase</h2><p>If Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies never amount to anything in terms of real-world use, Coinbase still has a serious problem. Given Coinbase's fat margins, there's a ton of room for competitors to undercut the company's fees.</p><p>Competition will ensure that facilitating cryptocurrency trades doesn't remain such a high-margin business. Just like online stock trading platforms, which now largely don't charge commissions at all, it will be a race to the bottom for cryptocurrency trading platforms.</p><p>Coinbase could make money in other ways, but options will be limited if cryptocurrency mostly remains a vehicle for gamblers and speculators.</p><h2>What Coinbase needs to happen</h2><p>Coinbase's business depends on people believing that cryptocurrency could <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> day go mainstream and have real-world utility, but for that scenario to never actually play out. That's basically the status quo today.</p><p>It's like Coinbase is sitting on top of a hill. A nudge to the left – stabilizing cryptocurrency prices and real-world utility – sends Coinbase tumbling in <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> direction as trading volume dries up. A nudge to the right – acceptance that cryptocurrency will remain a purely speculative asset – sends Coinbase tumbling in the other direction as competition forces lower fees. It seems like a very fragile situation.</p><p>And of course, cryptocurrency prices could crash, and interest from investors and speculators could vanish, without either scenario playing out. A 13F filed by the companyshows it is increasing its holdings in the sector by the thousands. Its stake in<b>Tesla</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>TSLA</u></b>) increased from just under 5,900 shares to just over 24,000 in Q1. Meanwhile, it bulked up its Nio holdings as well. The company increased its 83,800 shares in 2020 to 107,800 in the first quarter.</p><p>The Meag Munich Ergo purchase has big implications for Nio. While it has reliable support from retail investors, the bullishness of institutions on Nio is showing just how strong a play it can be. On top of bubbling rumors of Cathie Wood’s<b>Ark Invest</b>potentially adding NIO stockto some of its ETFs, the institutional chatter is aplenty.</p><p><b>Institutional Buying Indicate Bullishness on NIO Stock</b></p><p>It will be interesting to see where the EV company goes in May. The company will be reporting its detailed earnings this Thursday, April 29. Many are excited about the report because of the existing info we have on Nio’s Q1 deliveries. They think a positive report will catalyze more gains.<i>InvestorPlace</i>contributor Mark Hake is one of the many whosee Nio as an undervalued play, and think that the report can prove that.</p><p>The information Nio is providing already about its Q1 deliveries is exciting to investors. The company delivered an impressive 20,000 EVs in the first three months of 2021, up 423% year-over-year.
