The value of the S&P 500 index ha","content":"

The year 2022 has been very challenging for the U.S. stock market. The value of the S&P 500 index has decreased by 19.44%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has seen a loss of 8.78%, while the Nasdaq Composite has lost more than 33%. The hawkish monetary policy established by the Fed in the U.S. and inflation achieving its top reading in over 40 years were the primary factors that led to the majority of the sell-off that took place.

Communication services was the worst performing sector in the S&P 500 this year, falling more than 40%, followed by consumer discretionary. Energy was the only sector to rise, climbing 59%.

The following table details the overall performance of the S&P sectors in 2022.

Energy Sector

If there is one industry that has been able to give even the most inexperienced trader a significant tailwind, it is the energy industry.

The conflict in Ukraine drove up the price of energy to within striking distance of all-time highs; for example, the price of Brent oil peaked at $130 a barrel.

The energy industry as a whole did exceptionally well, and it was the top-performing sector for the S&P with gains of 59.05%. In general, the energy sector's performance was quite positive.

Consumer Staples

When the economy shows signs of slowing down, investors and traders tend to flock to this specific industry since it works as a safe haven for their money. But it has nevertheless posted losses of over 3% this year. As a general rule, during times of economic difficulty, this industry does see a larger proportion of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity because values decrease to a level that is more acceptable. On the other hand, this year there have been very few significant deals that have taken place.

Financial Sector

This specific industry, which many people believed would do well, failed to impress on the scoreboard, and its value has dropped by more than 12% this year. The Federal Reserve in the United States has recently boosted interest rates at the most aggressive levels in decades. This caused a tremendous amount of volatility in the market, which resulted in a significant number of banks reporting a respectable profit from their trading operations. In spite of this, many people have started to examine the state of their company's balance sheet as a result of rising interest rates because they are concerned about their ability to weather an economic downturn and maintain a healthy financial position.

Information Technology Sector

The information technology sector of the S&P 500 saw a year-to-date decrease of 28.91%. The Federal Reserve proceeded to rapidly boost interest rates, which resulted in a slowdown in economic activity. Additionally, there was a great possibility that a recession would take place in the United States. As a result, a huge number of corporations reduced their CAPM. As a direct consequence of this, we saw a significant number of firms' stock prices significantly decline.

Consumer Discretionary Sector

This industry has lost more than 37% in 2022. It is important to keep in mind that this specific industry is representative of discretionary expenditure, and we are aware that, as a result of inflation and interest rates reaching multi-decade highs, disposable income was tremendously affected in a negative way. Consumers have been having a hard time keeping up with their cost of living and have been making cutbacks wherever they can find the opportunity. As a result, we saw a significant increase in the amount of competitive selling in this industry.

Communication Services Sector

Shares of communications services firms have had a year decline in value of 40.42 percent. This collection of companies carried a substantial amount of debt, which, when combined with rising interest rates and subsequent increases in the amount of interest that was payable each month, was a significant strain on the company's finances. With both stocks valued at 21 times 2025 earnings, which is a better buy today?\n
\n
At first glance, Apple (AAPL) -Get Report and Amazon (AMZN) -Get Report stocks appeal to two distinct group of investors. The former, trading at 26 times current earnings, is a blend of value and growth, what some might call a GARP play. The latter, trading at 64 times EPS, is the highest growth of FAAMG names.
\n
But the Amazon Maven has unearthed an interesting finding. Both AAPL and AMZN are worth almost the same, in P/E terms, if one were to look forward to 2025. At comparable valuations, which is a better buy-and-hold through the mid-2020s?
\n
AAPL and AMZN: same valuation?
\n
The P/E multiple is a popular valuation metric that adds context to a stock’s market price. The numerator tends to be prior-year (trailing), current-year or next-year (forward) earnings per share.
\n
Amazon commands a higher multiple, among other reasons, because of the company’s more aggressive growth profile. Wall Street expects the e-commerce giant to increase EPS by a factor of four in the next five years. Apple, on the other hand, is project to “only” double earnings in the same period.
\n
By 2025, this is what analysts expect of each company’s bottom line, and what the stock’s P/E would be if share prices remained unchanged:
\n
\n
Amazon: 2025 EPS of $172.30, for a P/E of20.4times
\n
Apple: fiscal 2025 EPS of $6.30, for a P/E of21.2times
\n
\n
Given enough time and assuming that current earnings projections are close enough to accurate, Amazon tends to become a less aggressively valued stock by the year. Maybe one day, in the not-too-distant future, shares could even start to look more appealing to value investors.
\n
Which is the best bet?
\n
If Amazon and Apple are valued at roughly the same 2025 P/E, one fair question to ask is: which stock might perform best in the next five years? I can use the earnings multiple as a guide to think through this question.
\n
From the P/E formula, one can derive the following: future stock price is determined by the company’s earnings delivered (the denominator “E”) and how much investors are willing to pay for those earnings (the valuation multiple). Therefore, in the Amazon vs. Apple race to 2025, whichever does best at delivering EPS above consensus and/or commanding a richer earnings multiple wins.
\n
Clearly, this is open for debate since the future in uncertain. But I believe that Amazon stock has a better chance of producing higher gains than Apple through 2025.
\n
First, I find it highly unlikely that AMZN’s earnings multiple will converge from the 60s of today to the low 20s in 2025. This would only be feasible if the company’s growth opportunities dried out quickly, which I am not counting on. On the other hand, Apple’s P/E is more likely to stay around 20 to 25 times, given the more mature profile of the company relative to Amazon.
\n
This is not to say that I expect Amazon’s P/E to expand from 64 times. The opposite is more likely to happen, as the company ages. But if the stock is valued at, say, 40 times EPS in 2025, Amazon would not even need to deliver results beyond expectations to see its stock price double in five years.
\n
Regarding consensus, I also think that Amazon can beat expectations by a wider margin than Apple could. The e-commerce giant has been more aggressive at investing back in the business. With both stocks valued at 21 times 2025 earnings, which is a better buy today?\n\nAt first glance, Apple (AAPL) -Get Report and Amazon (AMZN) -Get Report stocks appeal to two distinct group of investors. The former, trading at 26 times current earnings, is a blend of value and growth, what some might call a GARP play. The latter, trading at 64 times EPS, is the highest growth of FAAMG names.\nBut the Amazon Maven has unearthed an interesting finding. Both AAPL and AMZN are worth almost the same, in P/E terms, if one were to look forward to 2025. At comparable valuations, which is a better buy-and-hold through the mid-2020s?\nAAPL and AMZN: same valuation?\nThe P/E multiple is a popular valuation metric that adds context to a stock’s market price. The numerator tends to be prior-year (trailing), current-year or next-year (forward) earnings per share.\nAmazon commands a higher multiple, among other reasons, because of the company’s more aggressive growth profile. Wall Street expects the e-commerce giant to increase EPS by a factor of four in the next five years. Apple, on the other hand, is project to “only” double earnings in the same period.\nBy 2025, this is what analysts expect of each company’s bottom line, and what the stock’s P/E would be if share prices remained unchanged:\n\nAmazon: 2025 EPS of $172.30, for a P/E of20.4times\nApple: fiscal 2025 EPS of $6.30, for a P/E of21.2times\n\nGiven enough time and assuming that current earnings projections are close enough to accurate, Amazon tends to become a less aggressively valued stock by the year. Maybe one day, in the not-too-distant future, shares could even start to look more appealing to value investors.\nWhich is the best bet?\nIf Amazon and Apple are valued at roughly the same 2025 P/E, one fair question to ask is: which stock might perform best in the next five years? I can use the earnings multiple as a guide to think through this question.\nFrom the P/E formula, one can derive the following: future stock price is determined by the company’s earnings delivered (the denominator “E”) and how much investors are willing to pay for those earnings (the valuation multiple). Therefore, in the Amazon vs. Apple race to 2025, whichever does best at delivering EPS above consensus and/or commanding a richer earnings multiple wins.\nClearly, this is open for debate since the future in uncertain. But I believe that Amazon stock has a better chance of producing higher gains than Apple through 2025.\nFirst, I find it highly unlikely that AMZN’s earnings multiple will converge from the 60s of today to the low 20s in 2025. This would only be feasible if the company’s growth opportunities dried out quickly, which I am not counting on. On the other hand, Apple’s P/E is more likely to stay around 20 to 25 times, given the more mature profile of the company relative to Amazon.\nThis is not to say that I expect Amazon’s P/E to expand from 64 times. The opposite is more likely to happen, as the company ages. But if the stock is valued at, say, 40 times EPS in 2025, Amazon would not even need to deliver results beyond expectations to see its stock price double in five years.\nRegarding consensus, I also think that Amazon can beat expectations by a wider margin than Apple could. The e-commerce giant has been more aggressive at investing back in the business. The green- and brown-field revenue growth opportunities in e-commerce and cloud seem better.\nIn addition, Amazon’s margins could expand substantially (see five-year trend below), if or once the company’s online retail business gets closer to maturity. Apple could also improve its margin profile but probably much less so, given how profitable the company already is.\nFigure 2: AMZN gross margin vs. operating margin.\nStock Rover\nTwitter speaks\nFun fact: Amazon and Apple stock trade at roughly the same 2025 P/E (i.e. 2025 earnings in the denominator) of around 21 times, even though AMZN seems much more expensive at today’s valuations. I don't know your financial needs, your preferred style of investing, or what industries you're best equipped to follow and understand. So there is no simple one-size-fits-all slam dunk answer to that question.

That being said, I can show you some stocks that may fit one or more of your specific needs right now. The companies below are all fantastic long-term investments, found in very different corners of Wall Street. You must decide which idea (or ideas) might be best for your unique situation.

So I'll give you one high-octane growth stock, one ultra-robust value investment, one cash-generating dividend champion, and one index-tracking exchange-traded fund (ETF) for the ultimate in diversification. If you're a momentum investor, always chasing the next get-rich-quick penny stock, I'll let you explore that unfortunate strategy elsewhere. This list is all about investing, not gambling.

On that note, let's get on with the good stuff. Here are three great stocks and one low-cost ETF that you can buy for less than $1,000 today.

The best growth stock: Roku

After a marketwide retreat from growth stocks in 2022, plenty of great picks are available today. Still, nothing beats the combination of deep discounts and fully intact long-term growth prospects that I see in Roku.

It starts with one simple fact: Digital streaming is the future of video-based entertainment.

In the long run, I expect the market share of broadcast and cable TV to land at zero percent. Likewise, DVD and Blu-ray disks will soon be as quaintly dated as VHS tapes or slide projectors. I can't call a global winner in the digital content wars, and several large services and studios will likely share the streaming market.

But Roku investors don't really care whether Netflix beats Disney+ or the other way around. As long as every competitor supports the Roku media player platform, all that matters is the continued growth of the streaming market as a whole.

Netflix likes to remind investors how much further it can grow before running into saturated markets. Last week's fourth-quarter report featured this helpful chart, for example:

Even the U.S. market, which is the world's oldest and most mature streaming forum, is still dominated by old-school TV channels. The rest of the world has a lot of catching up to do.

So Roku and its streaming-service partners are addressing a massive worldwide marketplace where sales and profits can multiply many times over. Roku is the clear leader in service-neutral media player hardware and software in North America, which sets the tone for the rest of the world. The company's international expansion has only just begun, once again outlining a tremendous opportunity for long-term growth.

At the same time, many Roku investors saw a couple of quarters with slower top-line growth last year and jumped to the conclusion that the growth story is over. So Roku shares are trading 65% lower over the last 52 weeks and 89% below the all-time highs from the summer of 2021.

This mismatch between bearish market perception and bullish business prospects is so wrong, I'm not sure whether I should laugh or cry. Until further notice, I keep buying more Roku shares as long as the unreasonable price cuts are available. I'll laugh all the way to the bank in a few years as the long-term growth thesis plays out.

If you only wanted my single best idea in today's market, Roku is it.

The best value stock: Alphabet

I love the bargain-bin discount on Roku shares, but not every investor is looking for a long-term growth investment in a patch of dramatic short-term market turbulence. If you're more interested in rock-solid value creation with a milder service of recent price cuts, I suggest checking out Alphabet (GOOG 1.56%) (GOOGL 1.90%) instead.

You know Alphabet as the parent company of Google -- a peerless cash machine built on online search and advertising services. The stock currently trades more than 30% below its peak price from November 2021, weighed down by economic concerns and the rise of potential competition from ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence tools.

If Roku is the safest growth story I know, Alphabet is the most obvious long-term survivor on the market.

This company was literally designed to roll with the punches and lead every technology revolution from the front line. Alphabet is quietly grooming a multitude of alternative business ideas to take the baton when web-based search and advertising has run its course. The most helpful option so far has been the Google Cloud service, which generated 10% of Alphabet's total sales in the third quarter of 2022. Ten or twenty years from now, we may have forgotten about the Google brand. At the same time, we'll depend on the Waymo self-driving car service every day and Verily Life Sciences may have found the proverbial cure for cancer -- all under Alphabet's business umbrella.

This company will outlive us all, helping investors build lasting wealth along the way. Alphabet's $1.2 trillion market cat is the third largest stock market footprint today, based on the modest valuation ratios of 19 times earnings and 4.5 times sales. Alphabet's assured longevity makes its stock a value investor's dream.

The best income investment: American Tower

If you're just looking for a reliable dividend-paying stock, whose quarterly payouts are powered by robust cash flows, my best recommendation is cell tower manager and operator American Tower.

Wireless communications are not only here to stay, but growing more important over time. As a result, American Tower's services should be in high demand for decades to come. The company's revenue streams are incredibly robust due to its clients' multi-year contracts.

American Tower rides its thriving market to tremendous growth in sales and profits over the year. One other line item keeps rising much faster, though. Quarterly dividends have risen by 500% in the last decade, showing no sign of a slowdown:

Let's say you picked up some American Tower shares ten years ago, when the stock was priced at $80 and offered an annual dividend payout of $0.90 per share. That policy supported a modest dividend yield of 1.1% at the time.

Today, the shares you bought in 2013 qualify for annual dividend payments of $5.69 per share. If you reinvested your dividend checks in more American Tower shares over the years, you'll also have 22% more shares than you started with. The effective yield on your original investment works out to 8.7% today.

I see no reason why American Tower shouldn't continue to boost its cash-sharing payouts in the future, setting you up for even greater quarterly income streams in the long run. Meanwhile, the stock price is back where it was in the summer of 2019. Grabbing a few shares on the cheap today should serve your income-generating portfolio well as the cash profits and dividend payments keep rising.

The best index ETF: Vanguard S&P 500 ETF

Finally, some investors don't want to pick individual stocks while others reserve a portion of their portfolio for funds tracking one of the major stock market indexes. This is the ticket to instant diversification, shielding you from the risk of any particular stock posting disappointing returns. Exchange-traded funds locked to a broad index are perfect for this task, since their highly automated operation results in extremely low management fees. This way, your returns will closely resemble your chosen market index, leaving more money in your wallet.

There are many respectable choices, but I keep returning to the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO 0.28%). This exchange-traded fund mirrors the popular S&P 500 (^GSPC 0.25%) market index with management fees of just 0.03%. For every $1,000 of returns this ETF generates for you, Vanguard's fund managers will keep $0.003 (one-third of a cent) to cover their costs. In other words, the management service is essentially free of charge.

It's cool to beat the market and all, but there is nothing wrong with simply matching the wealth-building gains of the S&P 500 index with zero stock-picking research and no management fees to speak of.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The Best Stocks to Invest $1,000 In Right Now
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nThe Best Stocks to Invest $1,000 In Right Now\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2023-01-30 23:34 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
KEY POINTSThere is no silver bullet to address the needs of every investor type with a single stock. Most investors should look at media-streaming technology expert Roku first.Other tempting options in...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"AMT":"美国电塔","GOOGL":"谷歌A","SPY":"标普500ETF","ROKU":"Roku Inc"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2023/01/29/the-best-stocks-to-invest-1000-in-right-now/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2307248334","content_text":"KEY POINTSThere is no silver bullet to address the needs of every investor type with a single stock. Most investors should look at media-streaming technology expert Roku first.Other tempting options in today’s market include Alphabet, American Tower, and the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF.$1,000 can go a long way toward building an effective stock portfolio that meets your personal needs for financial planning. The best stocks to invest $1,000 in today will vary from person to person. As long as every competitor supports the Roku media player platform, all that matters is the continued growth of the streaming market as a whole.Netflix likes to remind investors how much further it can grow before running into saturated markets. Last week's fourth-quarter report featured this helpful chart, for example:Even the U.S. market, which is the world's oldest and most mature streaming forum, is still dominated by old-school TV channels. The rest of the world has a lot of catching up to do.So Roku and its streaming-service partners are addressing a massive worldwide marketplace where sales and profits can multiply many times over. So Roku shares are trading 65% lower over the last 52 weeks and 89% below the all-time highs from the summer of 2021.This mismatch between bearish market perception and bullish business prospects is so wrong, I'm not sure whether I should laugh or cry. Until further notice, I keep buying more Roku shares as long as the unreasonable price cuts are available. I'll laugh all the way to the bank in a few years as the long-term growth thesis plays out.If you only wanted my single best idea in today's market, Roku is it.The best value stock: AlphabetI love the bargain-bin discount on Roku shares, but not every investor is looking for a long-term growth investment in a patch of dramatic short-term market turbulence. The best income investment: American TowerIf you're just looking for a reliable dividend-paying stock, whose quarterly payouts are powered by robust cash flows, my best recommendation is cell tower manager and operator American Tower.Wireless communications are not only here to stay, but growing more important over time. As a result, American Tower's services should be in high demand for decades to come. The company's revenue streams are incredibly robust due to its clients' multi-year contracts.American Tower rides its thriving market to tremendous growth in sales and profits over the year. One other line item keeps rising much faster, though. Quarterly dividends have risen by 500% in the last decade, showing no sign of a slowdown:Let's say you picked up some American Tower shares ten years ago, when the stock was priced at $80 and offered an annual dividend payout of $0.90 per share. That policy supported a modest dividend yield of 1.1% at the time.Today, the shares you bought in 2013 qualify for annual dividend payments of $5.69 per share. If you reinvested your dividend checks in more American Tower shares over the years, you'll also have 22% more shares than you started with. The effective yield on your original investment works out to 8.7% today.I see no reason why American Tower shouldn't continue to boost its cash-sharing payouts in the future, setting you up for even greater quarterly income streams in the long run. Meanwhile, the stock price is back where it was in the summer of 2019. Grabbing a few shares on the cheap today should serve your income-generating portfolio well as the cash profits and dividend payments keep rising. The best index ETF: Vanguard S&P 500 ETFFinally, some investors don't want to pick individual stocks while others reserve a portion of their portfolio for funds tracking one of the major stock market indexes. It's cool to beat the market and all, but there is nothing wrong with simply matching the wealth-building gains of the S&P 500 index with zero stock-picking research and no management fees to speak of.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":205,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9958473183,"gmtCreate":1673818084743,"gmtModify":1676538888564,"author":{"id":"3582021616632458","authorId":"3582021616632458","name":"Xue91","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4d9f9012cc2ef597a6ee7470e2cfb3e1","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582021616632458","authorIdStr":"3582021616632458"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Bxnxjxx","listText":"Bxnxjxx","text":"Bxnxjxx","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":10,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9958473183","repostId":"1173773008","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1173773008","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1673837089,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1173773008?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-01-16 10:44","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Reminder: U.S. Market is Closed for Martin Luther King Day on Monday, Jan.16, 2023","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1173773008","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"Martin Luther King Day has arrived. The first column contains the MoM percent change for the current month. The second column contains the MoM percent change in the prior month. The third column contains the MoM acceleration – i.e. the difference between the percent change this month minus the percent change last month. The fourth column contains the Cumulative Contribution to the percent MoM change of CPI. This describes exactly how much each component contributed to the cumulative All Items MoM percent change in CPI. The sum of the values in this column will yield the MoM percent change of All Items CPI (with minor discrepancy due to rounding). Finally, the rightmost column contains the Cumulative Contribution to MoM Acceleration of All Items CPI. The sum of the contributions in this column adds up to the MoM Acceleration of All Items CPI. Although all five columns provide important information, we recommend that readers pay special attention to the rightmost column (Cumulative Contribution to Acceleration) as it reveals exactly what drove the MoM acceleration/deceleration in CPI during the current month compared to the prior month.

As can be seen in the table above, Core Services ex Housing and Core Goods decelerated very significantly, accounting for most of the overall deceleration in CPI. More details will be provided below.

Analysis of CPI Components that Contributed Most to Change & Acceleration of CPI

In the following section, we perform the same contribution analysis as above, but at a more granular level of detail. In Figure 4 below, we list the top 10 CPI components (most granular level) that contributed negatively and positively to the MoM percent change in All Items CPI. These contributions take into account both the magnitude of the MoM change in each component as well as the weight of each component in All Items CPI.

Figure 4: Top Contributors to MoM Percent Change

Top CPI Contributors(BLS, Investor Acumen)

Source: BLS, Investor Acumen

One thing that emerges from this analysis is that a significant share of the deceleration of core CPI this month came from relatively volatile items, that might be considered "one-offs". For example, the significant decline in new and used car prices and health insurance may not be representative of core inflationary dynamics.

In Figure 5 below, we list the top 10 CPI components, at the most granular level, that contributed negatively and positively to the MoM acceleration (expressed in percent change) of All Items CPI. These contributions take into account both the magnitude of the MoM accelerations in the components as well as the weight of each component All Items CPI.

Figure 5: Top Contributors to MoM Acceleration

Top CPI Acceleration Contributors(BLS, Investor Acumen)

Source: BLS, Investor Acumen

As can be seen above, new and used cars, utilities and health insurance accounted for 0.26% of CPI deceleration -- the lion-share of deceleration and "surprise" for the month.

Also, somewhat notable, was the deceleration in Owner's Equivalent rent as well as Rent of Primary Residence -- both decelerating by 0.1% relative to last month. This indicates that housing inflation may possibly have peaked for this cycle and could be headed in a downward direction.

It is worthwhile to examine tables 4 and 5 above carefully as they are likely to include most or all of the items which surprised forecasters during the month.

Top Movers

In Figure 6 below, for general interest purposes, we show the components with the largest positive and negative MoM change (%). The YoY change in these particular components is to the right.

Figure 6: Top Movers MoM Percent Change

Top CPI Movers(BLS, Investor Acumen)

Source: BLS, Investor Acumen

Implications for Policy and Economic Performance

In this section, we review the potential implications of this month’s CPI report on policy (monetary & or fiscal) and the overall outlook for the US economy.

Impact on Policy. On the margin, this month’s deceleration of All-Items and Core CPI incrementally decreases pressure on the Fed to tighten overall financial conditions more than markets have expected. In fact, today’s numbers may tend to lower market expectations regarding how much (“terminal rate”), how fast and for how long the Fed may increase the Federal Funds interest rate.

Impact on Economic Performance. On the margin, the numbers may lead to speculation that inflation has peaked and is heading down in the intermediate term. This will take pressure off of interest rates across the economy such as mortgage interest rates. This could alleviate some of the headwinds that the economy has recently been experiencing, particularly in interest rate sensitive sectors.

Potential Financial Markets’ Impact

The CPI report, on the margin, will likely decrease risk perceptions regarding the probability of the Fed being forced to tighten monetary policy to a degree that would induce recession. In particular, market expectations of the Fed’s so-called “terminal rate” may decrease. This would cause the cost of financing across the economy to decrease and overall financial conditions to ease somewhat. This month’s CPI should provide a \"window of opportunity\" - all other factors remaining equal - for bond and stock markets to rally between now and the next CPI report.Summary Data and AnalysisFigure 1 below highlights key summary data and analysis for this month’s All Items CPI.Figure 1: All Items: Change, Acceleration, Expectations & SurpriseAll Items CPI(BLS, Investor Acumen)Source: BLS, Investing.com, Investor AcumenAs can be seen above, All-Items CPI decelerated significantly and significantly surprised to the downside.Figure 2 below highlights key summary data and analysis for this month’s Core CPI.Figure 2: Core: Change, Acceleration, Expectations & SurpriseCore CPI(BLS, Investor Acumen)Source: BLS, Investing.com, Investor AcumenAs can be seen above, Core CPI also decelerated significantly, providing a significant downside surprise.Analysis of Contributions of Key Aggregate Components of CPIIn Figure 3, we display the contributions to CPI inflation of five major aggregate components to the MoM (month-over-month) change in CPI and the MoM acceleration of CPI.Figure 3: Analysis of Key Aggregate Components of CPIAggregate CPI Component Analysis(BLS, Investor Acumen)Source: BLS, Investor AcumenWe will briefly review how to interpret the table above (as well as other tables in this report), describing each column from left to right. The first column contains the MoM percent change for the current month. The second column contains the MoM percent change in the prior month. The third column contains the MoM acceleration – i.e. the difference between the percent change this month minus the percent change last month. The fourth column contains the Cumulative Contribution to the percent MoM change of CPI. This describes exactly how much each component contributed to the cumulative All Items MoM percent change in CPI. The sum of the values in this column will yield the MoM percent change of All Items CPI (with minor discrepancy due to rounding). Finally, the rightmost column contains the Cumulative Contribution to MoM Acceleration of All Items CPI. The sum of the contributions in this column adds up to the MoM Acceleration of All Items CPI. Although all five columns provide important information, we recommend that readers pay special attention to the rightmost column (Cumulative Contribution to Acceleration) as it reveals exactly what drove the MoM acceleration/deceleration in CPI during the current month compared to the prior month.As can be seen in the table above, Core Services ex Housing and Core Goods decelerated very significantly, accounting for most of the overall deceleration in CPI. More details will be provided below.Analysis of CPI Components that Contributed Most to Change & Acceleration of CPIIn the following section, we perform the same contribution analysis as above, but at a more granular level of detail. In Figure 4 below, we list the top 10 CPI components (most granular level) that contributed negatively and positively to the MoM percent change in All Items CPI. These contributions take into account both the magnitude of the MoM change in each component as well as the weight of each component in All Items CPI.Figure 4: Top Contributors to MoM Percent ChangeTop CPI Contributors(BLS, Investor Acumen)Source: BLS, Investor AcumenOne thing that emerges from this analysis is that a significant share of the deceleration of core CPI this month came from relatively volatile items, that might be considered \"one-offs\". For example, the significant decline in new and used car prices and health insurance may not be representative of core inflationary dynamics.In Figure 5 below, we list the top 10 CPI components, at the most granular level, that contributed negatively and positively to the MoM acceleration (expressed in percent change) of All Items CPI. These contributions take into account both the magnitude of the MoM accelerations in the components as well as the weight of each component All Items CPI.Figure 5: Top Contributors to MoM AccelerationTop CPI Acceleration Contributors(BLS, Investor Acumen)Source: BLS, Investor AcumenAs can be seen above, new and used cars, utilities and health insurance accounted for 0.26% of CPI deceleration -- the lion-share of deceleration and \"surprise\" for the month.Also, somewhat notable, was the deceleration in Owner's Equivalent rent as well as Rent of Primary Residence -- both decelerating by 0.1% relative to last month. This indicates that housing inflation may possibly have peaked for this cycle and could be headed in a downward direction.It is worthwhile to examine tables 4 and 5 above carefully as they are likely to include most or all of the items which surprised forecasters during the month.Top MoversIn Figure 6 below, for general interest purposes, we show the components with the largest positive and negative MoM change (%). The YoY change in these particular components is to the right.Figure 6: Top Movers MoM Percent ChangeTop CPI Movers(BLS, Investor Acumen)Source: BLS, Investor AcumenImplications for Policy and Economic PerformanceIn this section, we review the potential implications of this month’s CPI report on policy (monetary & or fiscal) and the overall outlook for the US economy.Impact on Policy. On the margin, this month’s deceleration of All-Items and Core CPI incrementally decreases pressure on the Fed to tighten overall financial conditions more than markets have expected. In fact, today’s numbers may tend to lower market expectations regarding how much (“terminal rate”), how fast and for how long the Fed may increase the Federal Funds interest rate.Impact on Economic Performance. On the margin, the numbers may lead to speculation that inflation has peaked and is heading down in the intermediate term. This will take pressure off of interest rates across the economy such as mortgage interest rates. This could alleviate some of the headwinds that the economy has recently been experiencing, particularly in interest rate sensitive sectors.Potential Financial Markets’ ImpactThe CPI report, on the margin, will likely decrease risk perceptions regarding the probability of the Fed being forced to tighten monetary policy to a degree that would induce recession. In particular, market expectations of the Fed’s so-called “terminal rate” may decrease. This would cause the cost of financing across the economy to decrease and overall financial conditions to ease somewhat. This should provide a positive boost for both bond and equity markets.This month's report may provide a “window of opportunity” for bonds and stocks to rise during the next month, until the next CPI report comes out.I would caution that the internal details of this report, although generally positive, may not be quite as bullish as they appear on the surface. Much of the deceleration in both All-Items CPI and Core CPI was due to a few volatile components, which may not be representative of underlying inflationary trends. Still, this is the best news on inflation that the market has had in quite a while, and a significant relief rally in stocks and bonds can probably be expected.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":123,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9932866126,"gmtCreate":1662932879166,"gmtModify":1676537162762,"author":{"id":"3582021616632458","authorId":"3582021616632458","name":"Xue91","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4d9f9012cc2ef597a6ee7470e2cfb3e1","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582021616632458","authorIdStr":"3582021616632458"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$ABF SG BOND ETF(A35.SI)$Shiiaaekesssss","listText":"$ABF SG BOND ETF(A35.SI)$Shiiaaekesssss","text":"$ABF SG BOND ETF(A35.SI)$Shiiaaekesssss","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/c0b02e99303e818b43702d5b8be4f2d0","width":"1170","height":"2292"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":10,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9932866126","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":254,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9905280596,"gmtCreate":1659909492417,"gmtModify":1703767418666,"author":{"id":"3582021616632458","authorId":"3582021616632458","name":"Xue91","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4d9f9012cc2ef597a6ee7470e2cfb3e1","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582021616632458","authorIdStr":"3582021616632458"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$ABF SG BOND ETF(A35.SI)$She he where","listText":"$ABF SG BOND ETF(A35.SI)$She he where","text":"$ABF SG BOND ETF(A35.SI)$She he where","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/80ae73de9de96bbf8145af9812442f1d","width":"1170","height":"2292"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":8,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9905280596","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":176,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
