NIO could become in EVs what Alibaba is to Amazon in e-commerce.</li>\n <li>There are many EV competitors, but NIO has a proven track record of growth and innovation with international expansion, ADAS, autonomous driving and ADaaS, and battery swapping and BaaS.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><b>Investment Thesis</b></p>\n<p>NIO(NYSE:NIO)was far from the largest holding in my portfolio, but has grown well over 10x since the midst of its funding issues in late 2019. This was driven by a strong post-COVID-19 rebound and further growth of its EV sales. Further optionality was introduced with capacity expansion, the new, innovative BaaS business model, and potential international expansion to Europe.</p>\n<p>Still, one could argue that much if not all of those growth opportunities have been priced into the stock - which some havecalled the EV bubble. This, indeed, led me to review my position in NIO. Upon review, while there could certainly be downside, one could also argue that NIO is following a similar trajectory as Tesla (TSLA).</p>\n<p>Tesla stock had a similar success in 2020, which was capped off by its introduction in the S&amp;P 500. This arguably supports the view that EVs are, in fact, not a bubble. NIO, in that regard, should be regarded as the Chinese Tesla, and hence poised for further growth. China is also poised to become the silicon valley of EVs and also has supportive regulation towards autonomous driving.</p>\n<p>Nevertheless, there are many competitors in EVs, not the least in China as well (also from Tesla). However, NIO is still one of the leading start-ups positioned to capitalize on this opportunity, with its proven track record of innovation and growth.</p>\n<p><b>Automotive disruption</b></p>\n<p>The automotive industry is undergoing major changes. The first major trend is towards energy sustainability. This has fueled the growth of EVs. Secondly, there is a strong economic incentive towards autonomous driving (called the \"passenger economy\"), which will further revolutionize transportation.</p>\n<p>This means this industry is open for disruption. This is indeed already unfolding, as can be seen in the trajectory of Tesla through the last decade, as one of the hallmarks of this.</p>\n<p>Even though it is an old, capital intensive business, Tesla proves that investors are willing to pay up to be part of this revolution. As noted, Tesla capped this off by its S&amp;P 500 inclusion and 500k deliveries in 2020, with continued strong growth at scale into 2021.</p>\n<p>In short, even though it could be seen as an old business, there is a large, greenfield opportunity in the drive towards electric, autonomous transportation. Hence, to be leading this disruption requires innovation.</p>\n<p><b>NIO: Chinese Tesla</b></p>\n<p>This opportunity is arguably so large that there does not necessarily have to be a winner-takes-all. Automotive is such a large market that it could be likened to e-commerce, for example. Amazon (AMZN) has been one of the largest beneficiaries of this secular growth trend. However, there are many others who have achieved a large scale and valuation growth, including Alibaba (BABA) and MercadoLibre (MELI).</p>\n<p>To that end, NIO is positioned to become in EVs and AVs what Alibaba is to Amazon in e-commerce: the Chinese Tesla.</p>\n<p>NIO is a relatively young start-up, founded on the same premise of being a pure play EV automotive company, while also investing to be at forefront of ADAS and autonomous driving. It had a strong partnership with Mobileye. It was the first adopter of the former's EyeQ4 chip in 2018. NIO was also announced to be the first adopter of Mobileye's self-driving system, in 2022. This would likely be several years ahead of others, as Mobileye is targeting a 2025 introduction of (a broader introduction of) consumer AVs.</p>\n<p>It is, however, not entirely sure if (and perhaps even unlikely that) this Mobileye-powered autonomous vehicle will still launch, as going forward NIO is continuing with Nvidia (NVDA) hardware and developing its own software. In any case, NIO's timeline is unchanged, although it is not sure if NIO's own software will be as capable as Mobileye's. I previously covered this aspect of NIO here:NIO Stock: Autonomous Driving Too Good To Be True.</p>\n<p>In any case, NIO will bring another first to market with its Autonomous Driving-as-a-Service model or ADaaS. This will provide customer access to its autonomous driving capabilities through a monthly subscription.</p>\n<p>While there had been some funding issues and a slowdown in the midst of COVID-19, the image below shows that growth returned quickly. More recently, there have been issues due to the chip shortage, but those are obviously quite similar for the whole industry.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1373049969409b7fa8a90c380b6204e0\" tg-width=\"570\" tg-height=\"368\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>NIO's track record of growth and innovation is further completed by its introduction of the BaaS business model and plans for international expansion to Europe in 2021.</p>\n<p>BaaS or Battery-as-a-Service means that the EV is bought without the battery, which reduces the upfront price. The battery is then acquired separately through a subscription. BaaS was introduced in the second half of 2020 and quickly achieved a significant uptake of ~40%. BaaS also further complements NIO's previous innovation of battery swapping.</p>\n<p>Hence, this shows NIO is a leading innovator in the Chinese EV market, while investing to also lead the second, autonomous inflection. This is also a major market, as China is targeting a 25% EV market share by 2025. It could quickly become the silicon valley of EVs and even AVs. NIO's international ambition further underlines its leading position.</p>\n<p><b>Valuation</b></p>\n<p>Some have called EVs a bubble. Both Tesla and NIO stock were on the order of a 10-bagger in 2020. In the comments below many articles, Tesla's valuation and deliveries are compared to the traditional OEMs. Supposedly this should show the large discrepancy in valuation.</p>\n<p>Nevertheless, arguably this is not a bubble as the transition to EVs and subsequently AVs marks a major inflection. This means it is a large, largely greenfield growth opportunity. Hence, investors are willing to pay for this growth by investing in the companies who are leading. Moreover, EVs and AVs are also much closer aligned to tech investing, where higher valuations are more common.</p>\n<p>This is, of course, in spite of automotive being notorious for its capital intensity. NIO for its part (partly) solves this by not producing its vehicles itself, but partnering for manufacturing.</p>\n<p>There are other examples in tech where those who are seen as growth companies are rewarded with incredible valuations. For example, Nvidia has achieved almost 2x the valuation of Intel (INTC), despite over 3x lower revenue. TSMC (TSM) has over 2x the valuation of Intel despite almost 2x lower revenue. Of course, Nvidia and TSMC are growing faster than Intel, but that proves the point that high growth is often rewarded with perhaps unrealistic valuations.</p>\n<p>With regards to NIO's valuation, it (still) has ~10x lower market cap than Tesla (to be precise, about 8x at the time of writing), but also ~10x lower deliveries. Hence, NIO's valuation is in line with its bigger peer.</p>\n<p>Nevertheless, as a smaller company, it is arguably NIO who that the largest relative growth prospects ahead. For example, Tesla investors who want to see substantial shareholder returns going forward have to bank on Tesla's goal to achieve 20M deliveries by 2030, which would be over a fifth of the total global vehicle market.</p>\n<p>If NIO for its part would be able to translate its innovation into continued, sustained growth, similar to Tesla, then there should be no reason for NIO to not continue to track the valuation of Tesla. This means NIO, indeed, may have another 10x upside or so if it closes the gap to Tesla in scale.</p>\n<p>From that view, NIO is lagging behind Tesla by multiple years, in both deliveries and market cap. The last comment could be as analogous to for examplePinterest(PINS), which is a company Iarguedwas lagging by several years to Facebook (FB).</p>\n<p><b>Risks</b></p>\n<p>Of course, there are major risks. Mainly, this thesis is based on two assumptions:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Tesla and other EV/AV stocks will continue to grow and receive elevated valuations as these trends continue to unfold;</li>\n <li>NIO is best positioned to most closely track Tesla's business and stock performance.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Any decrease in (relative) valuation could result in downside. For example, Tesla's ambition as laid out at its fall 2020 Battery Day event called for Tesla to achieve a scale of 20 million units by 2030. Hence, it is likely at least some part of that ambition for further growth is already priced into the stock.</p>\n<p>Needless to say, not every automotive or EV company will be able to achieve a scale of 20M units, as the global automotive market is below 100M units. There is both competition from traditional OEMs such as GM (GM) and Volkswagen, as well as other Chinese companiessuch as XPeng(XPEV).</p>\n<p>Additionally, although China seems to be one the largest markets for EVs in the near future, Tesla itself has already built its own Gigafactory in China, further increasing competition. Although the reverse is also partly true given NIO's own international expansion.</p>\n<p>The last risk for NIO growth it that is has expressed that it wants to remain a premium brand with relatively high ASPs (average selling prices). While this implies NIO could have above-average gross margins, it may nevertheless lower NIO's addressable market and hence potential future growth.</p>\n<p>Further, while NIO is heavily investing in autonomous driving and seems to be at the forefront of this next major inflection, it is ultimately reliant on third-party silicon vendors like Nvidia. This insight means pretty much by definition that AV technology may not remain a differentiated capability, as others will be able to buy the same off-the-shelf systems. Although as noted NIO is developing its own software, that itselfis also a riskgiven the difficulty in creating a scalable and reliable AV system.</p>\n<p>As described, though, NIO is a clear, leading innovator, and has achieved a strong brand value. This arguably makes it the strongest candidate to become the closest to a 'Chinese Tesla'.</p>\n<p><b>Takeaway</b></p>\n<p>In the last 18 months or so, there has been a major shift in investment sentiment around EV companies. Tesla has seen 10-bagger returns. So when evaluating NIO, after its own 10-bagger returns (or more), to a valuation closer to $100B than $10B, on the surface this may change the investment narrative.</p>\n<p>However, at least a portion of NIO's large shareholder returns was because of its financial issues, which it has overcome; NIO's valuation is not significantly different from Tesla, for one. Meanwhile, its still much lower scale arguably leaves much room for upside.</p>\n<p>NIO's stock is based on NIO's growth to capitalize on the two-fold disruption of EVs and AVs in the automotive industry. NIO already has a proven track record of growth and innovation with battery swap, ADAS, autonomous driving (although with some increased risks given its change of supplier), ADaaS, BaaS, and even international expansion.</p>\n<p>While far from every company will be able to achieve a similar scale as Tesla, NIO clearly remains positioned to be successful in this space, which represents a large, greenfield opportunity in both the Chinese and international push towards electric and autonomous driving.</p>\n<p>This means NIO's valuation is both the risk and the reward. The reward is that NIO could realistically still expand by another 10x if it continues to trade at a similar valuation as Tesla, while closing the gap in scale. I likened NIO to the Alibaba of EVs: the Chinese counterpart of Amazon in EVs. NIO could become in EVs what Alibaba is to Amazon in e-commerce.\nThere are many EV competitors, but NIO has a proven track record of growth and innovation with international expansion, ADAS, autonomous driving and ADaaS, and battery swapping and BaaS.\n\nInvestment Thesis\nNIO(NYSE:NIO)was far from the largest holding in my portfolio, but has grown well over 10x since the midst of its funding issues in late 2019. This was driven by a strong post-COVID-19 rebound and further growth of its EV sales. Further optionality was introduced with capacity expansion, the new, innovative BaaS business model, and potential international expansion to Europe.\nStill, one could argue that much if not all of those growth opportunities have been priced into the stock - which some havecalled the EV bubble. This, indeed, led me to review my position in NIO. Upon review, while there could certainly be downside, one could also argue that NIO is following a similar trajectory as Tesla (TSLA).\nTesla stock had a similar success in 2020, which was capped off by its introduction in the S&P 500. This arguably supports the view that EVs are, in fact, not a bubble. NIO, in that regard, should be regarded as the Chinese Tesla, and hence poised for further growth. China is also poised to become the silicon valley of EVs and also has supportive regulation towards autonomous driving.\nNevertheless, there are many competitors in EVs, not the least in China as well (also from Tesla). However, NIO is still one of the leading start-ups positioned to capitalize on this opportunity, with its proven track record of innovation and growth.\nAutomotive disruption\nThe automotive industry is undergoing major changes. The first major trend is towards energy sustainability. This has fueled the growth of EVs. Secondly, there is a strong economic incentive towards autonomous driving (called the \"passenger economy\"), which will further revolutionize transportation.\nThis means this industry is open for disruption. This is indeed already unfolding, as can be seen in the trajectory of Tesla through the last decade, as one of the hallmarks of this.\nEven though it is an old, capital intensive business, Tesla proves that investors are willing to pay up to be part of this revolution. As noted, Tesla capped this off by its S&P 500 inclusion and 500k deliveries in 2020, with continued strong growth at scale into 2021.\nIn short, even though it could be seen as an old business, there is a large, greenfield opportunity in the drive towards electric, autonomous transportation. Hence, to be leading this disruption requires innovation.\nNIO: Chinese Tesla\nThis opportunity is arguably so large that there does not necessarily have to be a winner-takes-all. Automotive is such a large market that it could be likened to e-commerce, for example. Amazon (AMZN) has been one of the largest beneficiaries of this secular growth trend. However, there are many others who have achieved a large scale and valuation growth, including Alibaba (BABA) and MercadoLibre (MELI).\nTo that end, NIO is positioned to become in EVs and AVs what Alibaba is to Amazon in e-commerce: the Chinese Tesla.\nNIO is a relatively young start-up, founded on the same premise of being a pure play EV automotive company, while also investing to be at forefront of ADAS and autonomous driving. It had a strong partnership with Mobileye. It was the first adopter of the former's EyeQ4 chip in 2018. NIO was also announced to be the first adopter of Mobileye's self-driving system, in 2022. This would likely be several years ahead of others, as Mobileye is targeting a 2025 introduction of (a broader introduction of) consumer AVs.\nIt is, however, not entirely sure if (and perhaps even unlikely that) this Mobileye-powered autonomous vehicle will still launch, as going forward NIO is continuing with Nvidia (NVDA) hardware and developing its own software. In any case, NIO's timeline is unchanged, although it is not sure if NIO's own software will be as capable as Mobileye's. I previously covered this aspect of NIO here:NIO Stock: Autonomous Driving Too Good To Be True.\nIn any case, NIO will bring another first to market with its Autonomous Driving-as-a-Service model or ADaaS. This will provide customer access to its autonomous driving capabilities through a monthly subscription.\nWhile there had been some funding issues and a slowdown in the midst of COVID-19, the image below shows that growth returned quickly. More recently, there have been issues due to the chip shortage, but those are obviously quite similar for the whole industry.\n\nNIO's track record of growth and innovation is further completed by its introduction of the BaaS business model and plans for international expansion to Europe in 2021.\nBaaS or Battery-as-a-Service means that the EV is bought without the battery, which reduces the upfront price. The battery is then acquired separately through a subscription. BaaS was introduced in the second half of 2020 and quickly achieved a significant uptake of ~40%. BaaS also further complements NIO's previous innovation of battery swapping.\nHence, this shows NIO is a leading innovator in the Chinese EV market, while investing to also lead the second, autonomous inflection. This is also a major market, as China is targeting a 25% EV market share by 2025. It could quickly become the silicon valley of EVs and even AVs. NIO's international ambition further underlines its leading position.\nValuation\nSome have called EVs a bubble. Both Tesla and NIO stock were on the order of a 10-bagger in 2020. In the comments below many articles, Tesla's valuation and deliveries are compared to the traditional OEMs. Supposedly this should show the large discrepancy in valuation.\nNevertheless, arguably this is not a bubble as the transition to EVs and subsequently AVs marks a major inflection. This means it is a large, largely greenfield growth opportunity. Hence, investors are willing to pay for this growth by investing in the companies who are leading. Moreover, EVs and AVs are also much closer aligned to tech investing, where higher valuations are more common.\nThis is, of course, in spite of automotive being notorious for its capital intensity. NIO for its part (partly) solves this by not producing its vehicles itself, but partnering for manufacturing.\nThere are other examples in tech where those who are seen as growth companies are rewarded with incredible valuations. For example, Nvidia has achieved almost 2x the valuation of Intel (INTC), despite over 3x lower revenue. TSMC (TSM) has over 2x the valuation of Intel despite almost 2x lower revenue. Of course, Nvidia and TSMC are growing faster than Intel, but that proves the point that high growth is often rewarded with perhaps unrealistic valuations.\nWith regards to NIO's valuation, it (still) has ~10x lower market cap than Tesla (to be precise, about 8x at the time of writing), but also ~10x lower deliveries. Hence, NIO's valuation is in line with its bigger peer.\nNevertheless, as a smaller company, it is arguably NIO who that the largest relative growth prospects ahead. For example, Tesla investors who want to see substantial shareholder returns going forward have to bank on Tesla's goal to achieve 20M deliveries by 2030, which would be over a fifth of the total global vehicle market.\nIf NIO for its part would be able to translate its innovation into continued, sustained growth, similar to Tesla, then there should be no reason for NIO to not continue to track the valuation of Tesla. This means NIO, indeed, may have another 10x upside or so if it closes the gap to Tesla in scale.\nFrom that view, NIO is lagging behind Tesla by multiple years, in both deliveries and market cap. The last comment could be as analogous to for examplePinterest(PINS), which is a company Iarguedwas lagging by several years to Facebook (FB).\nRisks\nOf course, there are major risks. Mainly, this thesis is based on two assumptions:\n\nTesla and other EV/AV stocks will continue to grow and receive elevated valuations as these trends continue to unfold;\nNIO is best positioned to most closely track Tesla's business and stock performance.\n\nAny decrease in (relative) valuation could result in downside. For example, Tesla's ambition as laid out at its fall 2020 Battery Day event called for Tesla to achieve a scale of 20 million units by 2030. Hence, it is likely at least some part of that ambition for further growth is already priced into the stock.\nNeedless to say, not every automotive or EV company will be able to achieve a scale of 20M units, as the global automotive market is below 100M units. There is both competition from traditional OEMs such as GM (GM) and Volkswagen, as well as other Chinese companiessuch as XPeng(XPEV).\nAdditionally, although China seems to be one the largest markets for EVs in the near future, Tesla itself has already built its own Gigafactory in China, further increasing competition. Although the reverse is also partly true given NIO's own international expansion.\nThe last risk for NIO growth it that is has expressed that it wants to remain a premium brand with relatively high ASPs (average selling prices). While this implies NIO could have above-average gross margins, it may nevertheless lower NIO's addressable market and hence potential future growth.\nFurther, while NIO is heavily investing in autonomous driving and seems to be at the forefront of this next major inflection, it is ultimately reliant on third-party silicon vendors like Nvidia. This insight means pretty much by definition that AV technology may not remain a differentiated capability, as others will be able to buy the same off-the-shelf systems. Although as noted NIO is developing its own software, that itselfis also a riskgiven the difficulty in creating a scalable and reliable AV system.\nAs described, though, NIO is a clear, leading innovator, and has achieved a strong brand value. This arguably makes it the strongest candidate to become the closest to a 'Chinese Tesla'.\nTakeaway\nIn the last 18 months or so, there has been a major shift in investment sentiment around EV companies. Tesla has seen 10-bagger returns. So when evaluating NIO, after its own 10-bagger returns (or more), to a valuation closer to $100B than $10B, on the surface this may change the investment narrative.\nHowever, at least a portion of NIO's large shareholder returns was because of its financial issues, which it has overcome; NIO's valuation is not significantly different from Tesla, for one. Meanwhile, its still much lower scale arguably leaves much room for upside.\nNIO's stock is based on NIO's growth to capitalize on the two-fold disruption of EVs and AVs in the automotive industry. NIO already has a proven track record of growth and innovation with battery swap, ADAS, autonomous driving (although with some increased risks given its change of supplier), ADaaS, BaaS, and even international expansion.\nWhile far from every company will be able to achieve a similar scale as Tesla, NIO clearly remains positioned to be successful in this space, which represents a large, greenfield opportunity in both the Chinese and international push towards electric and autonomous driving.\nThis means NIO's valuation is both the risk and the reward. The reward is that NIO could realistically still expand by another 10x if it continues to trade at a similar valuation as Tesla, while closing the gap in scale. The company mostly specializes in the development of luxurious electric SUVs and just likeXPeng(XPEV), it manufactures and sells its cars online and through its showrooms across China. In addition, NIO also offers various energy-related solutions such as home charging stations, mobile charging services, and others to its customers.</p>\n<p>In recent years, the company has been aggressively growing, as the deliveries of its cars have been steadily increasing quarter after quarter, which led to the appreciation of its stock. However, due to the overall market selloff last month, NIO's stock along with stocks of other EV manufacturers such as XPeng, Tesla, and Li Auto (LI) evaporated most of its YTD gains and are currently underperforming the S&amp;P 500 Index.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/23b2ed509a529a876c423f3e9426be3f\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"443\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><i>Chart: Seeking Alpha</i></p>\n<p>Despite this, there's every reason to believe that NIO's stock will recover, as the company's successful performance in Q1 shows that its growth story is far from over. InQ1alone NIO beat the Street expectations by $160 million and generated $1.22 billion in revenues, which represents an increase of 481.8% Y/Y. In addition, the company's gross profit was $237.3 million, while its vehicle margin was 21.2% against -7.4% a year ago. During the period, NIO has also improved its bottom-line performance, as its net loss was only $68.8 million, and despite the chip shortages and the Chinese New Year its deliveries have also increased by 422.7% Y/Y and by 15.6% Q/Q to 20,060.</p>\n<p>One of the best things about NIO is that it already has a dominant position in the Chinese EV industry and it also has a solid balance sheet, as its cash reserves at the end of Q1stoodat $7.2 billion, while it had only $1.59 billion in long-term debt. As a result, it can easily reinvest its resources back into the business to drive growth and establish an even stronger foothold in its home market without worrying too much about the current losses.</p>\n<p>On top of that, while some might say that by trading at a price-to-salesratioof ~13x NIO is overvalued, the reality is that its momentum is not slowing down and there's every reason to believe that the growth story is far from over. Considering that even at the market cap of ~$70 billion NIO still trades below the Streetconsensusprice of $59.24 per share, it's safe to assume that the upside is still there, especially since the current forecasts suggest that the company will increase its revenues from $2.49 billion in FY20 to $8.81 billion in FY22.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/71905e5a90565b6a7e8864b3f6b0c226\" tg-width=\"883\" tg-height=\"382\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><i>Source: Seeking Alpha</i></p>\n<p>At this stage, the major competitor of NIO's flagship SUVES8is Tesla's Model X. However, there are several reasons to believe that the ES8 is a more attractive car in comparison to the Model X, and as a result, NIO has all the opportunities to outsell its competitor in China in the long run. First of all, the ES8 has more legroom and headroom than the Model X, it also has a luxurious interior, and it comes with three different battery packages that could last from 415 kilometers to 580 kilometers on a single charge.</p>\n<p>All of the ES8 SUVs include a proprietary operating system, have advanced navigation software, and most importantly cost ~$70,000 per vehicle in China, which is below the cost of Tesla's Model X, which comes at a price tag of ~$110,000 per vehicle in the region. We believe that this pricing advantage will undoubtedly help NIO to outsell Tesla in the SUV segment, especially since its cars now could bepurchasedat a discount thanks to the new Chinese subsidy program.</p>\n<p>Another uniqueness of NIO is its battery as a service business model, which allows its customers to swap their batteries in various swapping stations around China if they don't want to charge their cars or are in a hurry. After recently deploying the second version of its Power Swap stations, the swapping of batteries is now done in under three minutes, which is the same as refueling a traditional ICE car, and a single station now could perform up to 312 battery swaps in a single day. Since then, it has doubled as I write, making it a terrific performer for those that got in near the low.</p><p>The quick jump in price does make me believe there will be an eventual sell-off as investors take some profits off the table, which could further drop if temporary bad news hits the stock near the time of a sell-off; the most likely being another shutdown in Shanghai.</p><p>But even in that worst-case scenario, the downward pressure on the price of NIO would only be temporary because the narrative surrounding the company has been consistently improving over the last month or so.</p><p>I believe the worst is behind NIO because the negative catalysts have already been baked into its share price. For that reason, it should enjoy steady and consistent growth going forward, although it will likely be a bumpy ride. Patient investors should generate some solid returns over the next couple of years and further out if there are no macro-economic or significant geopolitical events that impact the global economy and the EV sector.</p><h2>How to view the temporary macro challenges NIO faces</h2><p>I always ask myself two questions when looking at a company that appears to have been oversold like NIO, and they&#39;re these: has anything changed in the fundamentals of the sector, or has anything changed in the fundamentals of the company? The answer to both of these questions for NIO is no.</p><p>The EV sector is on a long-term growth trajectory, and NIO has positioned itself, through the increase of its production capacity and the introduction of new models, to take advantage of the EV trend.</p><p>Even with chips shortages, government shutdowns in China, temporary negative sentiment concerning China-based companies in general, the weakening global economy, delisting concerns in the U.S., and some inflationary pressure on commodities and chips, NIO is still managing to work its way out of short-term delivery challenges as demand for its vehicles continue to remain high.</p><p>Concerning things it has control over, it is raising prices and boosting production in order to mitigate increasing prices for commodities and chips. It has also listed on the Main Board of the Singapore Exchange to assuage concerns over possibly being delisted in the U.S.</p><p>It also continues to enlarge its charging and swapping network. At the end of the first quarter, it had over 960 battery swapping stations installed in 197 cities. It has &#34;829 supercharging stations and 1,140 destination chargers.&#34;</p><p>As for chip shortages, management stated in its latest earnings report that the chip shortage in June is related less to previous chip supply constraints and more to the boost in production capacity; for that reason the company believes chip supplies can be managed.</p><h2>Positive catalysts for NIO</h2><p>Among the positive catalysts for the company are the attractive valuation as a result of being oversold, increasing deliveries, expanding model portfolio, its boost in production, and the growth of its battery swap stations.</p><p>Initial response to the company&#39;s latest earnings report was a sell-off, as investors reacted to contracting margins coming from higher commodity and chip prices. But once the market absorbed the overall report and more numbers have come in, investors started looking at deliveries and the expected increase in production going forward.</p><p>For example, in May NIO boosted deliveries to 7,024, bring its total for the year to 37,866, up almost 12 percent year-over-year. Revenue jumped to $1.56 billion, a gain of 24 percent from 1Q 2021.</p><p>The point here is investors are starting to look at revenue and deliveries more than the past negative catalysts, as I mentioned earlier, have been already baked into the share price of NIO.</p><p>Other positive catalysts include the recent launch of its highly anticipated ES7. Deliveries for the crossover are scheduled for August 28th. China&#39;s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) stated in a symposium that it is researching ways to boost its manufacturing sector as a result of the impact from COVID-19 restrictions. It is believed the EV sector in China will be a beneficiary of the new policies.</p><p>Last, China&#39;s State Council is expected to retain tax breaks already in place in order to stimulate demand for EV sales. Council members believe the tax cuts would generate $29.8 billion in consumer spending on the sector.</p><p>All of these things are tailwinds for NIO as it continues growth momentum.</p><h2>Probable taking of profits from NIO stock</h2><p>If we see any negative catalyst that spooks NIO shareholders, I believe we&#39;ll see a fairly quick sell-off in shares in order to protect profits. To get an idea of the type of numbers we&#39;re looking at in a sell-off, we&#39;ll look at the last couple of months when the share price of NIO corrected.</p><p>On May 4 traded at a little over $18.00 per share as a high, and by May 12 dropped to a 52-week low of $11.67. On May 20 it traded at a high of around $17.50, and by May 25 fell to $14.00 per share. More recently, on June 8 it traded at close to $20.45, and on June 13 dropped to a little under $16.00 per share. Since it dropped to about $16.00 per share on June 13, the price has soared to over $23.00 per share on June 23. Since May 12 the share price of NIO has about doubled.</p><p>My thought here is anything that causes the market to produce fear will result in some quick offloading of shares in NIO. If there is a negative catalyst combined with taking profits, the share price will take a significant hit, but I don&#39;t see it lingering for long. I believe NIO has turned the corner and any negative news will only have a temporal effect on the company. As mentioned above, everything negative has already been priced into the share price of NIO, and the only thing that will potentially disrupt its momentum is another prolonged shutdown of Shanghai in response to a COVID outbreak. But again, this does nothing to change the fundamentals of the EV market, neither the fundamentals of NIO as a company.</p><p>I&#39;m bringing this up because shareholders shouldn&#39;t be too concerned about this in any way. My point of view is NIO is in no danger in the short or long term, and the only thing that negative catalysts can do is extend the time it takes for the company to resume extraordinary growth.</p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p>Since I see NIO&#39;s share price being disproportionately punished in response to macroeconomic and geopolitical events and concerns, it is very likely to outperform its peers in the near term as it moves back into alignment with its strong fundamentals.</p><p>Further out, it is wisely building out production capacity as it introduces new models, positioning itself for a strong growth spurt as consumers start to spend again.</p><p>With supply chains improving and the company boosting the price of its models in response to increase in the price of commodities and chips, it is improving its margins and bottom line under difficult circumstances. That said, some of its pre-orders in the past will take a hit until the company works through its inventory and fills those orders.</p><p>My thesis is it&#39;s not a matter of if, but when NIO starts to regain strong growth momentum as it increases deliveries from strong consumer demand and larger production capacity.</p><p>As we&#39;ve seen after it hit its 52-week low on May 12, it has already doubled from that level. For that reason, it should enjoy steady and consistent growth going forward, although it will likely be a bumpy ride. Patient investors should generate some solid returns over the next couple of years and further out if there are no macro-economic or significant geopolitical events that impact the global economy and the EV sector.How to view the temporary macro challenges NIO facesI always ask myself two questions when looking at a company that appears to have been oversold like NIO, and they're these: has anything changed in the fundamentals of the sector, or has anything changed in the fundamentals of the company? The answer to both of these questions for NIO is no.The EV sector is on a long-term growth trajectory, and NIO has positioned itself, through the increase of its production capacity and the introduction of new models, to take advantage of the EV trend.Even with chips shortages, government shutdowns in China, temporary negative sentiment concerning China-based companies in general, the weakening global economy, delisting concerns in the U.S., and some inflationary pressure on commodities and chips, NIO is still managing to work its way out of short-term delivery challenges as demand for its vehicles continue to remain high.Concerning things it has control over, it is raising prices and boosting production in order to mitigate increasing prices for commodities and chips. It has also listed on the Main Board of the Singapore Exchange to assuage concerns over possibly being delisted in the U.S.It also continues to enlarge its charging and swapping network. At the end of the first quarter, it had over 960 battery swapping stations installed in 197 cities. It has \"829 supercharging stations and 1,140 destination chargers.\"As for chip shortages, management stated in its latest earnings report that the chip shortage in June is related less to previous chip supply constraints and more to the boost in production capacity; for that reason the company believes chip supplies can be managed.Positive catalysts for NIOAmong the positive catalysts for the company are the attractive valuation as a result of being oversold, increasing deliveries, expanding model portfolio, its boost in production, and the growth of its battery swap stations.Initial response to the company's latest earnings report was a sell-off, as investors reacted to contracting margins coming from higher commodity and chip prices. During the period, NIO has also improved its bottom-line performance, as its net loss was only $68.8 million, and despite the chip shortages and the Chinese New Year its deliveries have also increased by 422.7% Y/Y and by 15.6% Q/Q to 20,060.</p>\n<p>One of the best things about NIO is that it already has a dominant position in the Chinese EV industry and it also has a solid balance sheet, as its cash reserves at the end of Q1stoodat $7.2 billion, while it had only $1.59 billion in long-term debt. As a result, it can easily reinvest its resources back into the business to drive growth and establish an even stronger foothold in its home market without worrying too much about the current losses.</p>\n<p>On top of that, while some might say that by trading at a price-to-salesratioof ~13x NIO is overvalued, the reality is that its momentum is not slowing down and there's every reason to believe that the growth story is far from over. However, there are several reasons to believe that the ES8 is a more attractive car in comparison to the Model X, and as a result, NIO has all the opportunities to outsell its competitor in China in the long run. First of all, the ES8 has more legroom and headroom than the Model X, it also has a luxurious interior, and it comes with three different battery packages that could last from 415 kilometers to 580 kilometers on a single charge.</p>\n<p>All of the ES8 SUVs include a proprietary operating system, have advanced navigation software, and most importantly cost ~$70,000 per vehicle in China, which is below the cost of Tesla's Model X, which comes at a price tag of ~$110,000 per vehicle in the region. We believe that this pricing advantage will undoubtedly help NIO to outsell Tesla in the SUV segment, especially since its cars now could bepurchasedat a discount thanks to the new Chinese subsidy program.</p>\n<p>Another uniqueness of NIO is its battery as a service business model, which allows its customers to swap their batteries in various swapping stations around China if they don't want to charge their cars or are in a hurry. After recently deploying the second version of its Power Swap stations, the swapping of batteries is now done in under three minutes, which is the same as refueling a traditional ICE car, and a single station now could perform up to 312 battery swaps in a single day. NIO now has a network of charging stations across all of China and if the solid-state batteries won't be available by the end of the decade at scale, then the idea of swapping batteries on the go will remain a viable business model in the long run.</p>\n<p>Going forward, NIO plans to accelerate its deliveries this month in order to meet its Q2 goal of delivering 21,000 to 22,000 vehicles, which represents a growth of 103% Y/Y to 113% Y/Y and plans to generate $1.24 to $1.29 billion in revenues during the period. Despite the semiconductor shortages, NIO already managed to increase its deliveries in April and May to 7,102 vehicles and 6,711 vehicles, respectively, which represents a growth of 125% Y/Y and 95.3% Y/Y, respectively. On top of that, NIO is also on track to deliver 90,000 to 100,000 vehicles this year.</p>\n<p>Considering this, there's every reason to believe that NIO will continue to be a dominant player in the Chinese EV market and a leader of the luxury EV segment in the region. While the company doesn't have an infrastructure outside China, we don't think that's a downside at all since China is the biggest EV market in the world that's constantly growing and NIO has better chances of creating shareholder value there than abroad. Upon review, while there could certainly be downside, one could also argue that NIO is following a similar trajectory as Tesla (TSLA).</p>\n<p>Tesla stock had a similar success in 2020, which was capped off by its introduction in the S&amp;P 500. This arguably supports the view that EVs are, in fact, not a bubble. NIO, in that regard, should be regarded as the Chinese Tesla, and hence poised for further growth. China is also poised to become the silicon valley of EVs and also has supportive regulation towards autonomous driving.</p>\n<p>Nevertheless, there are many competitors in EVs, not the least in China as well (also from Tesla). However, NIO is still one of the leading start-ups positioned to capitalize on this opportunity, with its proven track record of innovation and growth.</p>\n<p><b>Automotive disruption</b></p>\n<p>The automotive industry is undergoing major changes. The first major trend is towards energy sustainability. This has fueled the growth of EVs. Secondly, there is a strong economic incentive towards autonomous driving (called the \"passenger economy\"), which will further revolutionize transportation.</p>\n<p>This means this industry is open for disruption. This is indeed already unfolding, as can be seen in the trajectory of Tesla through the last decade, as one of the hallmarks of this.</p>\n<p>Even though it is an old, capital intensive business, Tesla proves that investors are willing to pay up to be part of this revolution. As noted, Tesla capped this off by its S&amp;P 500 inclusion and 500k deliveries in 2020, with continued strong growth at scale into 2021.</p>\n<p>In short, even though it could be seen as an old business, there is a large, greenfield opportunity in the drive towards electric, autonomous transportation. Hence, to be leading this disruption requires innovation.</p>\n<p><b>NIO: Chinese Tesla</b></p>\n<p>This opportunity is arguably so large that there does not necessarily have to be a winner-takes-all. Automotive is such a large market that it could be likened to e-commerce, for example. Amazon (AMZN) has been one of the largest beneficiaries of this secular growth trend. However, there are many others who have achieved a large scale and valuation growth, including Alibaba (BABA) and MercadoLibre (MELI).</p>\n<p>To that end, NIO is positioned to become in EVs and AVs what Alibaba is to Amazon in e-commerce: the Chinese Tesla.</p>\n<p>NIO is a relatively young start-up, founded on the same premise of being a pure play EV automotive company, while also investing to be at forefront of ADAS and autonomous driving. It had a strong partnership with Mobileye. It was the first adopter of the former's EyeQ4 chip in 2018. NIO was also announced to be the first adopter of Mobileye's self-driving system, in 2022. This would likely be several years ahead of others, as Mobileye is targeting a 2025 introduction of (a broader introduction of) consumer AVs.</p>\n<p>It is, however, not entirely sure if (and perhaps even unlikely that) this Mobileye-powered autonomous vehicle will still launch, as going forward NIO is continuing with Nvidia (NVDA) hardware and developing its own software. In any case, NIO's timeline is unchanged, although it is not sure if NIO's own software will be as capable as Mobileye's. This will provide customer access to its autonomous driving capabilities through a monthly subscription.</p>\n<p>While there had been some funding issues and a slowdown in the midst of COVID-19, the image below shows that growth returned quickly. More recently, there have been issues due to the chip shortage, but those are obviously quite similar for the whole industry.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1373049969409b7fa8a90c380b6204e0\" tg-width=\"570\" tg-height=\"368\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>NIO's track record of growth and innovation is further completed by its introduction of the BaaS business model and plans for international expansion to Europe in 2021.</p>\n<p>BaaS or Battery-as-a-Service means that the EV is bought without the battery, which reduces the upfront price. The battery is then acquired separately through a subscription. BaaS was introduced in the second half of 2020 and quickly achieved a significant uptake of ~40%. BaaS also further complements NIO's previous innovation of battery swapping.</p>\n<p>Hence, this shows NIO is a leading innovator in the Chinese EV market, while investing to also lead the second, autonomous inflection. This is also a major market, as China is targeting a 25% EV market share by 2025. It could quickly become the silicon valley of EVs and even AVs. NIO's international ambition further underlines its leading position.</p>\n<p><b>Valuation</b></p>\n<p>Some have called EVs a bubble. Both Tesla and NIO stock were on the order of a 10-bagger in 2020. In the comments below many articles, Tesla's valuation and deliveries are compared to the traditional OEMs. Supposedly this should show the large discrepancy in valuation.</p>\n<p>Nevertheless, arguably this is not a bubble as the transition to EVs and subsequently AVs marks a major inflection. This means it is a large, largely greenfield growth opportunity. Hence, investors are willing to pay for this growth by investing in the companies who are leading. Moreover, EVs and AVs are also much closer aligned to tech investing, where higher valuations are more common.</p>\n<p>This is, of course, in spite of automotive being notorious for its capital intensity. NIO for its part (partly) solves this by not producing its vehicles itself, but partnering for manufacturing.</p>\n<p>There are other examples in tech where those who are seen as growth companies are rewarded with incredible valuations. For example, Nvidia has achieved almost 2x the valuation of Intel (INTC), despite over 3x lower revenue. TSMC (TSM) has over 2x the valuation of Intel despite almost 2x lower revenue. Of course, Nvidia and TSMC are growing faster than Intel, but that proves the point that high growth is often rewarded with perhaps unrealistic valuations.</p>\n<p>With regards to NIO's valuation, it (still) has ~10x lower market cap than Tesla (to be precise, about 8x at the time of writing), but also ~10x lower deliveries. Hence, NIO's valuation is in line with its bigger peer.</p>\n<p>Nevertheless, as a smaller company, it is arguably NIO who that the largest relative growth prospects ahead. For example, Tesla investors who want to see substantial shareholder returns going forward have to bank on Tesla's goal to achieve 20M deliveries by 2030, which would be over a fifth of the total global vehicle market.</p>\n<p>If NIO for its part would be able to translate its innovation into continued, sustained growth, similar to Tesla, then there should be no reason for NIO to not continue to track the valuation of Tesla. This means NIO, indeed, may have another 10x upside or so if it closes the gap to Tesla in scale.</p>\n<p>From that view, NIO is lagging behind Tesla by multiple years, in both deliveries and market cap. The last comment could be as analogous to for examplePinterest(PINS), which is a company Iarguedwas lagging by several years to Facebook (FB).</p>\n<p><b>Risks</b></p>\n<p>Of course, there are major risks. Mainly, this thesis is based on two assumptions:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Tesla and other EV/AV stocks will continue to grow and receive elevated valuations as these trends continue to unfold;</li>\n <li>NIO is best positioned to most closely track Tesla's business and stock performance.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Any decrease in (relative) valuation could result in downside. For example, Tesla's ambition as laid out at its fall 2020 Battery Day event called for Tesla to achieve a scale of 20 million units by 2030. Hence, it is likely at least some part of that ambition for further growth is already priced into the stock.</p>\n<p>Needless to say, not every automotive or EV company will be able to achieve a scale of 20M units, as the global automotive market is below 100M units. There is both competition from traditional OEMs such as GM (GM) and Volkswagen, as well as other Chinese companiessuch as XPeng(XPEV).</p>\n<p>Additionally, although China seems to be one the largest markets for EVs in the near future, Tesla itself has already built its own Gigafactory in China, further increasing competition. Although the reverse is also partly true given NIO's own international expansion.</p>\n<p>The last risk for NIO growth it that is has expressed that it wants to remain a premium brand with relatively high ASPs (average selling prices). While this implies NIO could have above-average gross margins, it may nevertheless lower NIO's addressable market and hence potential future growth.</p>\n<p>Further, while NIO is heavily investing in autonomous driving and seems to be at the forefront of this next major inflection, it is ultimately reliant on third-party silicon vendors like Nvidia. This insight means pretty much by definition that AV technology may not remain a differentiated capability, as others will be able to buy the same off-the-shelf systems. Although as noted NIO is developing its own software, that itselfis also a riskgiven the difficulty in creating a scalable and reliable AV system.</p>\n<p>As described, though, NIO is a clear, leading innovator, and has achieved a strong brand value. This arguably makes it the strongest candidate to become the closest to a 'Chinese Tesla'.</p>\n<p><b>Takeaway</b></p>\n<p>In the last 18 months or so, there has been a major shift in investment sentiment around EV companies. Tesla has seen 10-bagger returns. So when evaluating NIO, after its own 10-bagger returns (or more), to a valuation closer to $100B than $10B, on the surface this may change the investment narrative.</p>\n<p>However, at least a portion of NIO's large shareholder returns was because of its financial issues, which it has overcome; NIO's valuation is not significantly different from Tesla, for one. Meanwhile, its still much lower scale arguably leaves much room for upside.</p>\n<p>NIO's stock is based on NIO's growth to capitalize on the two-fold disruption of EVs and AVs in the automotive industry. NIO already has a proven track record of growth and innovation with battery swap, ADAS, autonomous driving (although with some increased risks given its change of supplier), ADaaS, BaaS, and even international expansion.</p>\n<p>While far from every company will be able to achieve a similar scale as Tesla, NIO clearly remains positioned to be successful in this space, which represents a large, greenfield opportunity in both the Chinese and international push towards electric and autonomous driving.</p>\n<p>This means NIO's valuation is both the risk and the reward. The reward is that NIO could realistically still expand by another 10x if it continues to trade at a similar valuation as Tesla, while closing the gap in scale. I likened NIO to the Alibaba of EVs: the Chinese counterpart of Amazon in EVs. In 2021, the company is expected to grow 117% y/y to $5.4 billion.</p>\n<p>The company is not yet profitable but is expected to be by 2022. Gross margin only turned positive in 2020 and is expected to be 19.3% in 2021. EBITDA is expected to be negative $258 million in 2021 and a positive $206 million in 2022. Free cash flow is expected to be negative $42 million in 2021 before turning to a positive $354 million in 2022.</p>\n<p>However, despite the cash burn expected in 2021, investors should feel at ease since the company exited&nbsp;2020&nbsp;with $5.9 billion of cash and cash equivalents. But to have those parks getting back to full capacity is a very good thing. People are coming back to theaters. I saw a recent survey from a movie theater chain or Fandango I believe it was. The percentages are really high in terms of people who are going to theaters who want to go back, who are going to go see multiple movies at summer or plan to. That's a really good sign. Marvel's Phase Four is about to kick off in the theaters. We got a couple of new shows on Disney+ <i>Loki</i> starting up, beginning in June.</p>\n<p>But let's talk about <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> thing. Let's highlight one thing here. The recent earnings report with a little bit disappointing to some investors because of those Disney+ numbers. What were those numbers? They came in at 104 million subscribers, and were expecting 109 million, and so were quibbling at about a five percent difference. That's amazing and I don't want to, I think if you are quibbling over five million, you're missing the point here. They'll outperform <b>Netflix</b> in the quarter in terms of additional subscribers. ESPN+ seems to be growing, which is strange when we think about because that's the one that probably has the least amount of original content. They are doing well, average revenue per user is growing at that at ESPN+ turn, churn at Disney+ is not a problem. They seem to be doing quite well there. I think this company is doing fine. But the market has already priced a lot of this reopening already into the stock. But I think we may be surprised when we get to the end of this year about the rebound surge of the theme parks and the movie theaters. I'm not sure that even with pricing in this reopening trade as it were, that we're really capturing the fullness of what Disney can do.</p>\n<p>Look at those theme parks. We got the Star Wars hotel that's opening up, which is a multi-day experience that you stay in this hotel and you don't leave. The new Avengers Campus at Disneyland, I think that's opening up beginning of June as well. There is a lot going on to both bringing people back and to potentially bring in a new segment of people who might not have been big fans of Disneyland, Disney World parks before with The Avengers and Star Wars stuff. This is a major entertainment juggernaut and that's not going to change anytime soon. We got theme parks reopening. What's going on. We have California theme parks are open now. They opened at the end of April. They are heading to full capacity. June 1st of 4th, one of those. I can't remember the exact date, but next week or the week after, they will be at full capacity. This is fantastic.\nIf you remember to pre-pandemic if you followed Disney, their biggest revenue segment was the theme parks, which also includes the cruise lines. But to have those parks getting back to full capacity is a very good thing. People are coming back to theaters. I saw a recent survey from a movie theater chain or Fandango I believe it was. The percentages are really high in terms of people who are going to theaters who want to go back, who are going to go see multiple movies at summer or plan to. That's a really good sign. Marvel's Phase Four is about to kick off in the theaters. We got a couple of new shows on Disney+ Loki starting up, beginning in June.\nBut let's talk about one thing. Let's highlight one thing here. The recent earnings report with a little bit disappointing to some investors because of those Disney+ numbers. What were those numbers? The trial enrolled 43,448 participants.</p>\n<p>Moderna'sPhase 3 COVE study enrolled 30,000 participants&nbsp;ages 18 years and up.</p>\n<p>Since then, these two companies have obtained authorizations for their respective vaccines to be used in adolescents.</p>\n<p>Bothcompanieshave also initiated studies in the pediatric population.</p>\n<p>Novavax's study enrolled 29,960 participants&nbsp;18 years of age and older&nbsp;across 119 sites in the U.S. and Mexico. The placebo-controlled portion of PREVENT-19 continues in adolescents from 12 to less than 18 years of age and recently completed enrollment with 2,248 participants.</p>\n<p><b>Vaccine Logistics:</b>&nbsp;Pfizer recently secured FDA authorization for storing undiluted, thawed vaccine vials in the refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C for up to one month.</p>\n<p>Previously, thawed, undiluted vaccine vials could be stored in the refrigerator for up to five&nbsp;days. Moderna's vaccine can be stored refrigerated between 2° and 8°C for up to 30 days prior to first use.</p>\n<p>NVX-CoV2373 is stored and stable at 2°- 8°C, allowing the use of existing vaccine supply chain channels for its distribution. It is packaged in a ready-to-use liquid formulation in 10-dose vials.</p>\n<p><b>Vaccine Efficacy:</b>&nbsp;Interim data from Pfizer-BioNTech's Phase 3 trials released in December showed the vaccine was well-tolerated and demonstrated 95% efficacy in preventing COVID-19 in those without prior infection seven&nbsp;days or more after the second dose. Updated top-line results released for up to six months after the second dose confirmed efficacy at 91.3%.</p>\n<p>The vaccine was found 100% effective against severe disease as defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and 95.3% effective against severe COVID-19 as defined by the FDA. It was also proved effective against the U.K. strain in lab studies.</p>\n<p>Moderna's vaccine showed efficacy of 94.1% against COVID-19. The company announced in May initial data from its Phase 2 study showing that a single 50 mcg dose of mRNA-1273 or mRNA-1273.351 given as a booster to previously vaccinated individuals increased neutralizing antibody titer responses against SARS-CoV-2 and two variants of concern, B.1.351, first identified in South Africa, and P.1, first identified in Brazil.</p>\n<p>Novavax's investigational vaccine demonstrated 100% protection against moderate and severe disease not involving variants of concern or variants of interest.</p>\n<p>Against variants of concern and variants of interest, the efficacy was 93.2% and in high-risk populations, defined as over 65 or under 65 years with certain comorbidities or having circumstances with frequent COVID-19 exposure, the efficacy was 91%.</p>\n<p>Overall efficacy was 90.4%, meeting the primary endpoint.</p>\n<p><b>Cantor Fitzgerald On Novavax's Vaccine:</b>A differentiating factor for NVX-2373&nbsp;is that it showed vaccine efficacy of 93.2% against VoC/VoI, which demonstrates protection across a broad range of SARS-CoV-2 strains, Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Charles Duncan said in a Monday morning note.</p>\n<p>\"Overall, these results enhance our conviction for a differentiated clinical and logistics profile from the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidate ‘2373,\" the analyst said.</p>\n<p>Showing efficacy against new strains in two Phase 3 clinical trials, rather than extrapolating potential efficacy from a neutralizing antibody assay conducted in a petri dish, differentiates NVX-CoV2373 from other vaccines that have emergency use authorization, he said.</p>\n<p>This profile, according to Cantor reduces regulatory/ commercial risk for the ‘2373 SARS-CoV-2 prophylactic vaccine candidate and, with positive Phase 3 data for NanoFlu reported in March 2020, should raise the profile for Novavax's platform as a whole.</p>\n<p><b>Vaccine Safety Data:</b>Pfizer-BioNTech's vaccine showed a favorable tolerability and safety profile, with the most common adverse events from&nbsp;BNT162b2 being transient, mild to moderate pain at the injection site, fatigue and headache, and these generally resolved within two days.</p>\n<p>For Moderna, the most common adverse reactions included injection site pain, fatigue, myalgia, arthralgia, headache, and erythema/redness at the injection site. Solicited adverse reactions increased in frequency and severity in the mRNA-1273 group after the second dose.</p>\n<p>Preliminary safety data from Novavax's trial showed the vaccine to be generally well-tolerated. Serious and severe adverse events were low in number and balanced between vaccine and placebo groups.</p>\n<p>In assessing reactogenicity seven&nbsp;days after dose one&nbsp;and dose two, injection site pain and tenderness, generally mild to moderate in severity, were the most common local symptoms, lasting less than three days.
