price may fluctuate alongside the value of bitcoin in the short-term, but Canaccord is betting on the future of blockchain technology and initiating coverage of the crypto exchange as a buy.\nThe largest U.S. cryptocurrency exchange’s stock, which last traded at around $233, made itspublic debut in mid-Apriland fell sharply with the price of bitcoin in late May. Bitcoin is currently trading around $39,000 following a rollercoaster month of trading after itsprice drop almost a month ago.\nCoinbase’s revenue is largely driven by trading fees, 81% of which come from retail trading and 5% from institutional trading, according to Canaccord. It has the highest trading fees across crypto exchanges, the bank found.\nStill, Canaccord said it’s confident Coinbase’s business will ultimately expand beyond retail trading and into emerging opportunities for the blockchain – which could include supporting new protocols beyond bitcoin and Ethereum, decentralized finance and cloud solutions – and that crypto exchange will be a “super on-ramp” into that new world.\nCanaccord set its one-year price target on the stock at $285, which is 12 times its 2022 enterprise value-to-sales estimate.Enterprise value-to-salesis a ratio that measures a firm’s value versus its sales revenue.\n“Market share and technology leaders that leverage their positions to drive innovation via creating new customer behaviors present some of most compelling, long-term value propositions in the market,” the bank said. “Although we will see ongoing volatility, we don’t think that comparing the longer-term potential of the blockchain and digital assets to what we have seen in ecommerce is off the mark.”\nThe analysts noted that Coinbase shares are likely to see headwinds in the short term, based on crypto spot price volatility so far in Tuesday after the chip maker said data-center revenue more than doubled to fuel record quarterly sales, and increased its revenue forecast for the year.</p><p>“In the first quarter, data-center product revenue more than doubled year-over-year and represented a high teens percentage of our overall revenue,” said AMD&nbsp;Chief Executive Lisa Su on a call with analysts. “We expect data-center product revenue to grow significantly as we go through the year driven by our strong pipeline of new cloud, enterprise and [high-performance computing] wins.”</p><p>Sales from enterprise embedded and semi-custom chips — the unit that includes data-center and gaming-console revenue — nearly quadrupled to $1.35 billion, compared with $348 million a year ago. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected $1.3 billion. Su’s comments about data-center revenue were helpful asAMD does not break out data-center sales from gaming sales.</p><p>“I think we saw actually strong signals in the first quarter that it would be a strong data-center year for us,” Su told analysts.</p><p>Last week, Intel Corp&nbsp;said the data-center market was in a“digestion phase,”contributing to a 20% drop in sales for data centers, yetanalysts pointed to increased competition from AMD and ARM Holdings PLC.</p><p>AMD reported first-quarter net income of $555 million, or 45 cents a share, compared with $162 million, or 14 cents a share, in the year-ago period. After adjusting for stock-based compensation and other factors, the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company reported earnings of 52 cents a share, compared with 18 cents a share in the year-ago period. Revenue rose to $3.45 billion from $1.79 billion in the year-ago quarter.</p><p>Analysts surveyed by FactSet had forecast adjusted earnings of 44 cents a share on revenue of $3.18 billion, and AMD projected between $3.1 billion and $3.3 billion.</p><p>AMD reported first-quarter sales of $2.1 billion for computing and graphics chips, up 46% from $1.44 billion last year, compared with analyst expectations of $1.89 billion.</p><p>Executives also increased AMD’s guidance for the full year, to a sales increase of about 50% from previous guidance of a roughly 37% increase. AMD reported revenue of $9.67 billion last year, suggesting sales of about $14.65 billion this year; analysts had been forecasting revenue of $13.46 billion, according to FactSet.</p><p>AMD expects second-quarter revenue of $3.5 billion to $3.7 billion, while analysts had been projecting $3.23 billion, according to FactSet.</p><p>Shares gained more than 3% in after-hours trading, following a 0.2% decline in the regular session to close at $85.21.</p><p>AMD’s strong earnings come amid a continuing shortage of microchips to sate demand from global industries, and the companies that make the silicon wafers that chip designs use, work to clear waiting lists that span several months.</p><p>More of how the chip sector is dealing with supply shortages will be revealed this week, with Qualcomm Inc.QCOM,-0.68%earnings on Wednesday and KLA Corp.KLAC,-1.58%earnings on Thursday.</p><p>Over the past 12 months, AMD shares have gained 51%. The Dow's three biggest losers in May are not only the names most likely to benefit from a post-pandemic reopening, they're also the same very names that have led the<b> Dow Jones Industrial Average</b> (DJINDICES:^DJI) higher over the course of the past several months. To see these leaders suddenly turn into laggards is a hint of a big shift in investor sentiment that just might work against the broad market for a while.</p>\n<h2>From leaders to laggards</h2>\n<p>Although the Dow advanced 2% last month, Apple, Visa, and Disney shares fell 5%, 4%, and 3%, respectively, in May, holding the Dow Jones Industrial Average back more than any of the other names that make up the index. But all the figures are fairly modest.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c7dbf02119c7b8c7af6ed661b0dc7519\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"495\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>Read between the lines, though: Something's changed.</p>\n<p>Sure, you could argue that Disney's disappointing subscriber growth for its Disney+ streaming service is the culprit for its weakness. The thing is, Disney shares were already peeling back from their March peak when that news hit last month. Visa's rally lasted all the way through its late-April peak at a record high of $237.50 before it began to weaken, largely in response to last quarter's results. While hardly horrifying, the 2% slide of its top and bottom lines loosely suggests whatever reopening benefit the payment company is going to reap has already been mostly reaped. And as for Apple, its all-time peak came all the way back in January. While its fiscal second-quarter numbers posted at the end of April were nothing less than stellar (sales were up 54% year over year to reach a new Q2 record), the market chose to see the proverbial glass as half empty rather than half full. The company also says it's feeling the impact of the chip shortage.</p>\n<p>Yet none of these are the sorts of challenges that would have dragged these stocks lower in the recent past. To see three of the Dow's very best performers start to lag simultaneously is telling, not so much about these three companies, but about investors' broad perceptions of the market's current health.</p>\n<h2>Right on cue</h2>\n<p>And curiously, these clues are taking shape exactly when you'd expect them to.</p>\n<p>While most long-term investors shouldn't be timing their entries and exits to correspond with what looks like the market's lows and highs, it would be naive to ignore how the major indexes entered this year's \"sell in May\" period well above where they'd normally be. As of the end of April the <b>S&amp;P 500</b> was up 11.5% from the end of 2020, when it would normally be up on the order of 3.4%. Last month's weakness filled in some of that gap, but most of it remains unfilled.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F629163%2F060121-sp500-average.png&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"469\"><span>Data source: Thomson Reuters. Chart by author.</span></p>\n<p>And lest you think this year's bullish start is merely the back end of last year's rebound from a strong sell-off when the coronavirus pandemic began in the United States, it isn't.</p>\n<p>Although the S&amp;P 500 was down as much as 35% in early 2020, it ended that year 16% higher than where it started it. This year's big gains simply move the market deeper into overbought territory, further ripening it for the sort of profit taking we're seeing take shape now. With influential names like Apple and Disney setting the tone, other stocks may soon mirror their weakness.</p>\n<h2>A simple answer</h2>\n<p>So to answer the question, no, the Dow's May laggards aren't buys here -- at least not yet.</p>\n<p>That doesn't necessarily make them sells if you currently own them, particularly if there are tax consequences of selling. All three are still fine companies with a bright future. Bitcoin is currently trading around $39,000 following a rollercoaster month of trading after itsprice drop almost a month ago.\nCoinbase’s revenue is largely driven by trading fees, 81% of which come from retail trading and 5% from institutional trading, according to Canaccord. It has the highest trading fees across crypto exchanges, the bank found.\nStill, Canaccord said it’s confident Coinbase’s business will ultimately expand beyond retail trading and into emerging opportunities for the blockchain – which could include supporting new protocols beyond bitcoin and Ethereum, decentralized finance and cloud solutions – and that crypto exchange will be a “super on-ramp” into that new world.\nCanaccord set its one-year price target on the stock at $285, which is 12 times its 2022 enterprise value-to-sales estimate.Enterprise value-to-salesis a ratio that measures a firm’s value versus its sales revenue.\n“Market share and technology leaders that leverage their positions to drive innovation via creating new customer behaviors present some of most compelling, long-term value propositions in the market,” the bank said. “Although we will see ongoing volatility, we don’t think that comparing the longer-term potential of the blockchain and digital assets to what we have seen in ecommerce is off the mark.”\nThe analysts noted that Coinbase shares are likely to see headwinds in the short term, based on crypto spot price volatility so far in June.\n“If we are in a bitcoin holding pattern here for a while, COIN could likely see sequentially weaker financial performance,” they said.\nStill, “we remain biased to the upside on bitcoin medium term and believe that resilience and elegance in the blockchain provide a great foundation for the entirety of digital assets from here,” the analysts wrote.\nCanaccord’s analysts highlighted bitcoin’s increasingly vertical supply curve – that is, the fact that quantities are limited, regardless of how much investors are willing to pay – as well as institutional interest in digital assets, comparative valuation to other stores of value, and “importantly what we view as an inevitable U.S. ETF.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":277,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
