I'm scaling out of frothier, more speculative names</h3>\n<p>I confess, some of the names I've picked up over the course of the past year or so aren't exactly the sorts of stocks I fully intended to hold for the long haul. They were closer to being bets than investments, which can be fun and rewarding but not exactly safe when the market starts to unravel. As the old adage goes, the higher they fly, the farther they fall. That's especially true when a company can't even come close to justifying its stock price with actual fundamentals. Yes, I'm looking at you, <b>AMC Entertainment</b>.</p>\n<p>Most investors innately know this is the smart-money move to make when the broad market is closer to a major high than a major low. Some investors, however, just need to hear someone else say it. I just did.</p>\n<h3>2. I'm prioritizing cash over equities</h3>\n<p>At first glance, this seems a lot like the aforementioned move -- backing off on my exposure to riskier equities. After all, if I'm selling anything, those proceeds are inherently turned into cash anyway.</p>\n<p>To be clear, however, I'm not merely swapping out my more speculative, vulnerable names for more reliable blue chips. I'm reducing my overall exposure to the market by converting a sizable stake of my holdings to cash.</p>\n<p>It's not always a fully understood (or even believed) facet of investing, but \"safe\" stocks like consumer goods names and utilities companies aren't actually protection from a correction. Shares of consumer packaged goods giant <b>Procter &amp; Gamble</b> fell nearly 24% between last year's February high and March low when the coronavirus began to spread across the world, including within the U.S. Utility name <b>The Southern Company</b> fell 39% during this timeframe. Both recovered -- and then some -- but neither actually offered any true defense from sweeping weakness.</p>\n<p>The point is, during market corrections, there's really no place to hide. You'll just have to let the long-term holdings you're committed to take their lumps on faith they'll bounce back. If you don't have that faith with any particular stock, just replace it with cash until the dust settles.</p>\n<h3>3. I'm adding (a little) gold</h3>\n<p>While most stocks are going to be dragged lower by a market-wide correction, not every sort of holding is a stock. There are also bonds and commodities, which still trade independently of equities. That doesn't preclude them from pulling back if and when the stock market does. But if they do peel back, they're doing so independently of the broad market.</p>\n<p>I'm not bothering with bonds right now. Interest rates are pointlessly low, and with inflation seemingly on the verge of racing out of control, bonds are little more than a coin toss at this time anyway.</p>\n<p>Commodities, however, are a different story. If anything, they've become bigger movers against a rising inflation backdrop and a Federal Reserve that's being increasingly pressured to respond. Should stocks tank, commodities -- already pumped and primed -- may see a swell of demand that drives prices higher. The easiest way to plug into this dynamic is with a simple pick like the <b>SPDR Gold Trust</b>.</p>\n<h3>4. Mostly, I'm doing nothing</h3>\n<p>Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I'm doing nothing about a possible market correction.</p>\n<p>You read that right.</p>\n<p>There are two schools of thought behind the decision to do nothing rather than trying to evade the impact of a correction. The first of these is the simple fact that most of my holdings really are long-haul positions I had (and have) every intention of hanging onto through bear markets. One of the greatest upsides of a legitimate buy-and-hold approach is that you don't even have to worry about temporary headwinds.</p>\n<p>The other idea at work here is the fact that guessing the market's next near-term reversal is just darn difficult to do ... so much so that most people don't do it very well. Indeed, the effort to time the stock market's peaks and valleys often does more harm than good, by virtue of getting you out too soon or too late, or getting you back in too soon or too late. The market's going to do what the market's going to do in its own time, and it's<i> not</i> going to telegraph what's around the corner to anyone. I'm scaling out of frothier, more speculative names\nI confess, some of the names I've picked up over the course of the past year or so aren't exactly the sorts of stocks I fully intended to hold for the long haul. They were closer to being bets than investments, which can be fun and rewarding but not exactly safe when the market starts to unravel. As the old adage goes, the higher they fly, the farther they fall. That's especially true when a company can't even come close to justifying its stock price with actual fundamentals. Yes, I'm looking at you, AMC Entertainment.\nMost investors innately know this is the smart-money move to make when the broad market is closer to a major high than a major low. Some investors, however, just need to hear someone else say it. I just did.\n2. I'm prioritizing cash over equities\nAt first glance, this seems a lot like the aforementioned move -- backing off on my exposure to riskier equities. After all, if I'm selling anything, those proceeds are inherently turned into cash anyway.\nTo be clear, however, I'm not merely swapping out my more speculative, vulnerable names for more reliable blue chips. I'm reducing my overall exposure to the market by converting a sizable stake of my holdings to cash.\nIt's not always a fully understood (or even believed) facet of investing, but \"safe\" stocks like consumer goods names and utilities companies aren't actually protection from a correction. Shares of consumer packaged goods giant Procter & Gamble fell nearly 24% between last year's February high and March low when the coronavirus began to spread across the world, including within the U.S. Utility name The Southern Company fell 39% during this timeframe. Both recovered -- and then some -- but neither actually offered any true defense from sweeping weakness.\nThe point is, during market corrections, there's really no place to hide. You'll just have to let the long-term holdings you're committed to take their lumps on faith they'll bounce back. If you don't have that faith with any particular stock, just replace it with cash until the dust settles.\n3. I'm adding (a little) gold\nWhile most stocks are going to be dragged lower by a market-wide correction, not every sort of holding is a stock. There are also bonds and commodities, which still trade independently of equities. That doesn't preclude them from pulling back if and when the stock market does. But if they do peel back, they're doing so independently of the broad market.\nI'm not bothering with bonds right now. Interest rates are pointlessly low, and with inflation seemingly on the verge of racing out of control, bonds are little more than a coin toss at this time anyway.\nCommodities, however, are a different story. If anything, they've become bigger movers against a rising inflation backdrop and a Federal Reserve that's being increasingly pressured to respond. Should stocks tank, commodities -- already pumped and primed -- may see a swell of demand that drives prices higher. The easiest way to plug into this dynamic is with a simple pick like the SPDR Gold Trust.\n4. Mostly, I'm doing nothing\nFinally, and perhaps most importantly, I'm doing nothing about a possible market correction.\nYou read that right.\nThere are two schools of thought behind the decision to do nothing rather than trying to evade the impact of a correction. The first of these is the simple fact that most of my holdings really are long-haul positions I had (and have) every intention of hanging onto through bear markets. One of the greatest upsides of a legitimate buy-and-hold approach is that you don't even have to worry about temporary headwinds.\nThe other idea at work here is the fact that guessing the market's next near-term reversal is just darn difficult to do ... so much so that most people don't do it very well. Indeed, the effort to time the stock market's peaks and valleys often does more harm than good, by virtue of getting you out too soon or too late, or getting you back in too soon or too late. The market's going to do what the market's going to do in its own time, and it's not going to telegraph what's around the corner to anyone. & Johnson has agreed to a $230 million settlement with New York state that bars the company from promoting opioids and confirmed it has ended distribution of such products within the United States.\nNew York Attorney General Letitia James' office in a statement Saturday said the agreement bans J&J from promoting opioids through any means and prohibits lobbying about such products at the federal, state or local levels.\nJohnson & Johnson has not marketed opioids in the U.S. since 2015 and fully discontinued the business in 2020.\nAs part of the settlement, the company will resolve opioids-related claims and allocate payments over nine years. It could also pay $30 million more in the first year if the state executive chamber signs into law new legislation creating an opioid settlement fund, according to the press release from James’ office.\nThe settlement follows years of lawsuits by states, cities and counties against major pharmaceutical companies over the opioid crisis, which haskilled nearly 500,000 peoplein the U.S. in the last couple decades.\nGovernments have argued that companies over-prescribed the drugs, causing people to become addicted and abuse other illegal forms of opioids, while companies have said they’ve distributed the necessary amount of the product to help people with medical issues.\n“The opioid epidemic has wreaked havoc on countless communities across New York state and the rest of the nation, leaving millions still addicted to dangerous and deadly opioids,” James said in a statement.\n“Johnson & Johnson helped fuel this fire, but today they’re committing to leaving the opioid business — not only in New York, but across the entire country,” she said. “Opioids will no longer be manufactured or sold in the United States by J&J.”\nThe New York opioid lawsuit trial against the rest of the defendants will begin this week, according to the release. It raised 22.7 billion yuan (S$4.7 billion) in a May offering that was 78 times oversubscribed. Every time, Netflix has always given the same answer: hard pass.</p>\n<p>Netflix CEO Reed Hastings appreciates the simplicity of the streamer's business model, seeing its simple value proposition as a strength. From a consumer perspective, it's very easy to understand how Netflix works. You pay a monthly fee, and you get all the entertainment you want with no ads. He also seems to think advertising would distract from the company's focus on pleasing customers, and potentially attract controversy over data collection, as he said in the earnings call in January 2020. He also believes that competing with ad heavyweights like <b>Alphabet</b>'s Google and <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\">Facebook</a> </b>would be difficult, as Netflix would have to essentially take market share from them.</p>\n<p>However, the streaming universe has evolved considerably since then, and Netflix needs to be open to updating its business. It faces new competition from a wide range of legacy media companies and others, including <b>Walt Disney</b>'s Disney+, <b>Apple</b>'s Apple TV+, <b>Comcast's </b>Peacock, HBOMax from <b>AT&amp;T</b>, Paramount+ from <b>ViacomCBS</b>, and <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DISCB\">Discovery Communications</a></b>' Discovery+.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F622221%2Fnetflix-hollywood-mural.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\"><span>Image source: Netflix.</span></p>\n<p>As Netflix seeks new ways to stay ahead of the competition and deliver value for investors, advertising is starting to look like an appealing option. Here's why.</p>\n<h2>1. The domestic market is maturing</h2>\n<p>For Netflix, 2020 was a banner year. The company added 32.6 million new subscribers globally, just 6.3 million of whom came from North America, even with the lockdowns and social distancing policies in effect during the pandemic. In the first quarter of 2021, it added just 450,000 net new members in North America, its weakest first quarter in the region since it launched streaming.</p>\n<p>Netflix is maturing in its home market, and it could approach a saturation point soon, as it already claims half of the households in the U.S. and Canada as customers. The company has also reached its target of 60 million to 90 million households in the U.S., as it finished last year with 74.4 million members in North America.</p>\n<p>However, Netflix still needs to find ways to grow its North American business, and increasing its subscriber base by less than 10% annually isn't going to be enough. That helps explain why Netflix raised prices in the U.S. earlier this year, increasing the fee on its standard package from $12.99/month to $13.99/month. But raising prices every year isn't sustainable, especially with mounting competition.</p>\n<p>That makes an ad-based tier an excellent option for Americans who may not want to pay full price for Netflix. If the streamer had a lower-priced ad-supported tier, it would also be easier for it to raise prices on its ad-free service, as it would still offer something for price-sensitive customers. Netflix has also said it would crack down on password sharing, and offering an ad-based option would be another way to appeal to customers who might otherwise just use a friend's account.</p>\n<h2>2. Connected TV is booming</h2>\n<p>The market for ad-driven streaming, or Connected TV (CTV), has surged during the pandemic, as have stocks with exposure to the category like <b>Roku</b>, <b>The Trade Desk</b>, and <b>Magnite</b>. A number of ad tech stocks have reported high double-digit percentage -- or even triple-digit -- growth in the category as the massive linear TV ad market begins to shift over to CTV. At Roku, the leading streaming device maker, platform revenue, which advertising is a significant component of, rose 71% last year to $1.27 billion.</p>\n<p>EMarketer expects the U.S. CTV market to grow 38% this year to $11.4 billion, and to more than double from 2020 to reach $18.3 billion in 2024.</p>\n<p>Advertisers love CTV for a number of reasons. Video ads convert better than ads on other formats. Streaming also offers a captive audience with ads that are difficult to skip, and it offers a level of granular data that linear TV can't compete with. CTV is also the only way for brands to do targeted advertising on television, giving them a much larger screen than they get with a mobile device.</p>\n<p>As CTV streaming options and audience sizes grow, its appeal to advertisers will only increase.</p>\n<h2>3. Advertising is a high-margin business</h2>\n<p>Hastings dismissed the potential for Netflix in advertising because it would be too difficult to compete with digital ad powerhouses like Google and Facebook, but the fast-growing CTV market shows that's not really accurate. As the streaming leader, Netflix can offer something that search-based and social media ads can't -- and as the streaming leader, Netflix would likely be the CTV leader if it wanted to be.</p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, brands would love the opportunity to advertise on Netflix. One media consultant told <i>Ad Week </i>early last year, \"It's such an opportunity for them (Netflix), not just to offer something ad-supported, but to put their own spin on it. There's such a need and a hunger, from an advertising point of view, for brand-safe premium video, and there are so many advertisers that would love to creatively work with them and do it in a tasteful way.\"</p>\n<p>The experience of other digital ad companies shows that it would almost certainly be a lucrative business for Netflix. The content is already in place, and the company has 75 million subscribers in North America happy to pay for it, many of whom watch hours of content each day. At Disney-owned Hulu, the ad business actually brings in more revenue than ad-free subscribers. In its most recent quarter, average revenue per Hulu streaming subscriber was $13.51 per month, compared to just $11.99 for an ad-free subscription.</p>\n<p>Building an ad business from scratch isn't easy, but Netflix already has relationships with brands through creative partnerships. That includes product placements and tie-ins through Netflix's social media accounts, including partner products like Subway sandwiches. <i>Stranger Things</i>, the hit '80s-based sci-fi show, had deals with 75 companies.</p>\n<p>Hastings has made his feelings on advertising clear, and Netflix will likely avoid it for the foreseeable future. But as domestic subscriber growth slows and CTV ramps up, calls for an ad-based option could get louder. Every time, Netflix has always given the same answer: hard pass.\nNetflix CEO Reed Hastings appreciates the simplicity of the streamer's business model, seeing its simple value proposition as a strength. From a consumer perspective, it's very easy to understand how Netflix works. You pay a monthly fee, and you get all the entertainment you want with no ads. He also seems to think advertising would distract from the company's focus on pleasing customers, and potentially attract controversy over data collection, as he said in the earnings call in January 2020. He also believes that competing with ad heavyweights like Alphabet's Google and Facebook would be difficult, as Netflix would have to essentially take market share from them.\nHowever, the streaming universe has evolved considerably since then, and Netflix needs to be open to updating its business. It faces new competition from a wide range of legacy media companies and others, including Walt Disney's Disney+, Apple's Apple TV+, Comcast's Peacock, HBOMax from AT&T, Paramount+ from ViacomCBS, and Discovery Communications' Discovery+.\nImage source: Netflix.\nAs Netflix seeks new ways to stay ahead of the competition and deliver value for investors, advertising is starting to look like an appealing option. Here's why.\n1. The domestic market is maturing\nFor Netflix, 2020 was a banner year. The company added 32.6 million new subscribers globally, just 6.3 million of whom came from North America, even with the lockdowns and social distancing policies in effect during the pandemic. In the first quarter of 2021, it added just 450,000 net new members in North America, its weakest first quarter in the region since it launched streaming.\nNetflix is maturing in its home market, and it could approach a saturation point soon, as it already claims half of the households in the U.S. and Canada as customers. The company has also reached its target of 60 million to 90 million households in the U.S., as it finished last year with 74.4 million members in North America.\nHowever, Netflix still needs to find ways to grow its North American business, and increasing its subscriber base by less than 10% annually isn't going to be enough. That helps explain why Netflix raised prices in the U.S. earlier this year, increasing the fee on its standard package from $12.99/month to $13.99/month. But raising prices every year isn't sustainable, especially with mounting competition.\nThat makes an ad-based tier an excellent option for Americans who may not want to pay full price for Netflix. If the streamer had a lower-priced ad-supported tier, it would also be easier for it to raise prices on its ad-free service, as it would still offer something for price-sensitive customers. Netflix has also said it would crack down on password sharing, and offering an ad-based option would be another way to appeal to customers who might otherwise just use a friend's account.\n2. Connected TV is booming\nThe market for ad-driven streaming, or Connected TV (CTV), has surged during the pandemic, as have stocks with exposure to the category like Roku, The Trade Desk, and Magnite. A number of ad tech stocks have reported high double-digit percentage -- or even triple-digit -- growth in the category as the massive linear TV ad market begins to shift over to CTV. At Roku, the leading streaming device maker, platform revenue, which advertising is a significant component of, rose 71% last year to $1.27 billion.\nEMarketer expects the U.S. CTV market to grow 38% this year to $11.4 billion, and to more than double from 2020 to reach $18.3 billion in 2024.\nAdvertisers love CTV for a number of reasons. Video ads convert better than ads on other formats. Streaming also offers a captive audience with ads that are difficult to skip, and it offers a level of granular data that linear TV can't compete with. CTV is also the only way for brands to do targeted advertising on television, giving them a much larger screen than they get with a mobile device.\nAs CTV streaming options and audience sizes grow, its appeal to advertisers will only increase.\n3. Advertising is a high-margin business\nHastings dismissed the potential for Netflix in advertising because it would be too difficult to compete with digital ad powerhouses like Google and Facebook, but the fast-growing CTV market shows that's not really accurate. As the streaming leader, Netflix can offer something that search-based and social media ads can't -- and as the streaming leader, Netflix would likely be the CTV leader if it wanted to be.\nNot surprisingly, brands would love the opportunity to advertise on Netflix. One media consultant told Ad Week early last year, \"It's such an opportunity for them (Netflix), not just to offer something ad-supported, but to put their own spin on it. There's such a need and a hunger, from an advertising point of view, for brand-safe premium video, and there are so many advertisers that would love to creatively work with them and do it in a tasteful way.\"\nThe experience of other digital ad companies shows that it would almost certainly be a lucrative business for Netflix. The content is already in place, and the company has 75 million subscribers in North America happy to pay for it, many of whom watch hours of content each day. At Disney-owned Hulu, the ad business actually brings in more revenue than ad-free subscribers. In its most recent quarter, average revenue per Hulu streaming subscriber was $13.51 per month, compared to just $11.99 for an ad-free subscription.\nBuilding an ad business from scratch isn't easy, but Netflix already has relationships with brands through creative partnerships. (AAPL) and Tesla Inc. (TSLA) seem as contrasting as treacle and water whether we are comparing their business models or the stock. However, after Apple confirmed that it was indeed working tolaunch a carin three to six years, market players have begun to speak about the two tech titans in the same breath.</p><p>In this article, I will compare the valuations of Apple and Tesla as well as discuss their respective stock performance. I will also discuss the suitability of AAPL and TSLA to different types of long-term investors.</p><p><b>Valuation comparison of Apple and Tesla</b></p><p>From the trough in March 2020 following the market panic over the COVID-19 outbreak, Tesla stock climbed more than 1000 percent higher by January this year. After the swoon in March, TSLA is still up over 800 percent, far outperforming Apple stock which had<i>merely</i>doubled in the same period.</p><p>Judging by the percentage returns, TSLA is the undisputed champion over AAPL. However, it's important to note that more than $1 trillion in market capitalization was added to Apple since mid-March of last year, while Tesla scored a smaller increase of $582 million.</p><p>At its current market cap of $648.9 billion, Tesla, Inc. is less than one-third the size of Apple, Inc. Despite the massive media attention it receives and the outsized influence its chief executive officer Elon Musk has on the investing community, Tesla only has 72 percent of the market cap of social media giant Facebook (FB).</p><p>In other words, while Apple stock has broken the psychological market cap of both one trillion and two trillion dollars, Tesla stock is still some distance from being \"obstructed\" by the first trillion-barrier. Considering that TSLA had in January surpassed FB stock in terms of market cap, should that happen again, we could see it potentially breaching the one trillion dollars level for the first time.</p><p>Critics could argue that would bring Tesla's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio to above a thousand times, a mind-boggling number in itself. In contrast, Apple's P/E ratio is currently at 28.7 times, a paltry number in comparison. However, for much of TSLA's trading history, the stock didn't even have a P/E ratio to speak of, as the company was not profitable for many years. Yet, the lack of a P/E ratio did not deter investors from piling in.</p><p>Based on the price-to-sales ratio, if Tesla Inc. reclaims the 30 times record achieved in January, its market cap would indeed be within reach of the one trillion dollar mark, coming at around $930 million. At the same time, comparing Apple with Tesla, the former certainly looks \"cheap\" and could be described as a \"screaming buy\". I have made the description in quotations as that can be said of many stocks when compared with Tesla.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0237824d55d08bcaac64f42aca9d9863\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"495\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p>Hence, it's more instructive to compare Apple Inc. with itself. In the past 10 years, its P/E ratio is an average of 17 times. The current P/E of 29 times is, thus, a leap over the historical average, even though it has come off the recent peaks of over 40 times in the past year.</p><p>For those who look beyond the income statements and into the cash flows, Apple's $90.5 billion free cash flow [FCF] outshines Tesla's $2.4 billion by an extremely wide margin. Putting the chasm in perspective, AAPL's price-to-FCF ratio at 24 times is ultra-low relative to TSLA's 310 times.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/960a9aac76fa63f1641c99e5f6552848\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"494\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p><b>Should long-term investors go for AAPL or TSLA?</b></p><p>At first glance, it looks to me that Apple stock is a good value buy. However, looking at the quant grade for value, AAPL's score of D+ is not that much better than TSLA's F. Why is this so? The primary reason is that quant ratings are based on the individual stock's metrics relative to its industry. Apple, Inc. belongs to the Information Technology sector, while Tesla, Inc. falls under Consumer Discretionary.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6387a75dbe764282d1160dac9c93e1c3\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"271\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span> Source: Seeking Alpha Premium</span></p><p>For growth, AAPL scored a poor grade of C- while TSLA has a stellar A+. While this is also judged according to their respective sectors, readers can see in the following table that TSLA's growth metrics are significantly superior to AAPL and consistently so.</p><p>For instance, Tesla's revenue on a 5-year CAGR basis is 53.2 percent, several times that of Apple's 7.4 percent. If Tesla's 50.8 percent EBITDA year-on-year growth is impressive, the 63.5 percent EBITDA growth on a forward basis would be incredible. In contrast, analysts are forecasting Apple's EBITDA growth on a forward basis to be more than halved. Its gross profit margin is nearly double that of Tesla. Further down the income statement, Apple's net income margin at 23.5 percent is more than 7 times higher than Tesla's.</p><p>AAPL's Return on Equity is a staggering 103.4 percent as compared to TSLA's 7.2 percent. The disparity is expected to widen as Apple continues to execute its share buyback program, shrinking its equity, while Tesla issues new shares to fund its growth. Its Return on Assets at 16.9 percent is several times that of Tesla's 3.0 percent. The answer depends on one's holding power and the ability to stay calm amid the volatility that TSLA stock has been known for. According to Wall Street analysts, Tesla's 2020's earnings per share [EPS] of $2.24 was just a small fraction of what the EV-maker could deliver in the next ten years.</p><p>By 2030, Tesla, Inc. is projected to mint $34.48 in EPS on a consensus basis, giving it a forward P/E ratio of 19.5 times. This will be a dramatic reduction from the current P/E ratio of over 300 times. Quarter-on-quarter, however, the picture might not be as clear as production hiccups from possible mishaps, shortage of components such as semiconductor chips, ramp-up challenges, etc. could obfuscate its true potential and make investors lose track of its long-term story.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/adb752e67473741117767ed857451476\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"278\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source: Seeking Alpha Premium</span></p><p>Of course, if you are looking for dividends, TSLA is one stock you can forget about investing in. On the contrary, AAPL offers dividend investors a fairly consistent dividend and an excellent \"dividend safety\", even if the dividend growth is barely a passing grade and the dividend yield is a disappointing D+ grade. A conservative investor wouldn't complain about Apple's dividend.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1e20422c2e173566aff6486316a750ef\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"227\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p><p><b>How might Apple's introduction of an electric car affect Tesla?</b></p><p>There are more similarities between Apple and Tesla than the duo being in the electric car business three-to-five years down the road. Both American firms are already entrenched in China for the manufacturing of products as well as an important market. That makes the two companies subjected to thegeopolitical tensions brewing intenselybetween the U.S. and China.</p><p>Perhaps cognizant of the risk of over-reliance on China, Apple's rumored partners were Koreans. However, after Apple confirmed that it was indeed working tolaunch a carin three to six years, market players have begun to speak about the two tech titans in the same breath.In this article, I will compare the valuations of Apple and Tesla as well as discuss their respective stock performance. I will also discuss the suitability of AAPL and TSLA to different types of long-term investors.Valuation comparison of Apple and TeslaFrom the trough in March 2020 following the market panic over the COVID-19 outbreak, Tesla stock climbed more than 1000 percent higher by January this year. After the swoon in March, TSLA is still up over 800 percent, far outperforming Apple stock which hadmerelydoubled in the same period.Judging by the percentage returns, TSLA is the undisputed champion over AAPL. However, it's important to note that more than $1 trillion in market capitalization was added to Apple since mid-March of last year, while Tesla scored a smaller increase of $582 million.At its current market cap of $648.9 billion, Tesla, Inc. is less than one-third the size of Apple, Inc. Despite the massive media attention it receives and the outsized influence its chief executive officer Elon Musk has on the investing community, Tesla only has 72 percent of the market cap of social media giant Facebook (FB).In other words, while Apple stock has broken the psychological market cap of both one trillion and two trillion dollars, Tesla stock is still some distance from being \"obstructed\" by the first trillion-barrier. Considering that TSLA had in January surpassed FB stock in terms of market cap, should that happen again, we could see it potentially breaching the one trillion dollars level for the first time.Critics could argue that would bring Tesla's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio to above a thousand times, a mind-boggling number in itself. In contrast, Apple's P/E ratio is currently at 28.7 times, a paltry number in comparison. However, for much of TSLA's trading history, the stock didn't even have a P/E ratio to speak of, as the company was not profitable for many years. Yet, the lack of a P/E ratio did not deter investors from piling in.Based on the price-to-sales ratio, if Tesla Inc. reclaims the 30 times record achieved in January, its market cap would indeed be within reach of the one trillion dollar mark, coming at around $930 million. At the same time, comparing Apple with Tesla, the former certainly looks \"cheap\" and could be described as a \"screaming buy\". I have made the description in quotations as that can be said of many stocks when compared with Tesla.Hence, it's more instructive to compare Apple Inc. with itself. In the past 10 years, its P/E ratio is an average of 17 times. The current P/E of 29 times is, thus, a leap over the historical average, even though it has come off the recent peaks of over 40 times in the past year.For those who look beyond the income statements and into the cash flows, Apple's $90.5 billion free cash flow [FCF] outshines Tesla's $2.4 billion by an extremely wide margin. Putting the chasm in perspective, AAPL's price-to-FCF ratio at 24 times is ultra-low relative to TSLA's 310 times.Should long-term investors go for AAPL or TSLA?At first glance, it looks to me that Apple stock is a good value buy. However, looking at the quant grade for value, AAPL's score of D+ is not that much better than TSLA's F. Why is this so? The primary reason is that quant ratings are based on the individual stock's metrics relative to its industry.
