When one company is removed from the list, another one is added. Always.
\n
That's what is about to happen. Alexion Pharmaceuticals currently ranks as one of only six biotech stocks on the S&P 500. However, AstraZeneca will soon acquire the company, meaning S&P Global (NYSE:SPGI) will have to replace Alexion on its heavily followed index.
\n
As it turns out, another biotech stock is set to take Alexion's spot: Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA). S&P Global announced last Thursday evening that Moderna would be added to the S&P 500, effective prior to the market open on July 21. Shares of Moderna jumped over 10% on Friday, after soaring nearly 150% year to date already. What's next for this hot vaccine stock?
\n

\n
\n
Using the past as a guide
\n
There's an old saying that \"history doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes.\" Assuming the adage has some truth to it, we could potentially learn how Moderna's share price might fare by looking at what happened with other stocks that were added to the S&P 500.
\n
So far in 2021, 10 stocks have been added to the index as a result of acquisitions, spinoffs, and market-cap changes.
\n
The most recent of these was Organon (NYSE:OGN). S&P Global announced on May 27 that the drugmaker, which was spun off from Merck, would be added to the S&P 500 index, effective June 4. Organon's shares climbed only around 4% between the date of the announcement and its addition to the index. But afterward, the pharma stock fell close to 15%.
\n
S&P Global announced on May 10 that Charles River Laboratories (NYSE:CRL) would join the S&P 500 index effective May 14. The diagnostics stock fell a little in the days leading up to its addition to the index. However, after its inclusion on the S&P 500, Charles River Labs stock went on a roll, rising nearly 17%.
\n
There is one stock that might offer a closer parallel to Moderna. NXP Semiconductors (NASDAQ:NXPI) stock jumped around 10% between the announcement of its addition to the S&P 500 on March 12, and when it joined the index on March 22. That's nearly exactly the same level as Moderna's shares leaped on Friday. So what happened next with NXP? The stock moved up and down like a yo-yo, and is now 5% lower.
\n
Different dynamics
\n
You've probably decided that history is a poor rhymer -- at least when it comes to how stocks perform when they're added to the S&P 500 index. There's a good reason why it's hard to discern a clear pattern: Each stock has different dynamics at work.
\n
Sure, mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track the S&P 500 index must now add shares of Moderna to their holdings. However, they were likely already doing so to some extent, even before the announcement about Moderna's addition to the index.
\n
What matters most for Moderna stock now is exactly the same thing that mattered most before last Thursday. And that critical factor is how demand for the company's COVID-19 vaccine will hold up.
\n
Based on the stock's trajectory in the weeks and months leading up to S&P Global's announcement that Moderna was replacing Alexion in the S&P 500, investors are expecting that demand for Moderna's vaccine will remain quite strong. They could very well be right.
\n
The variant variable
\n
However, whether or not investors' optimism is warranted depends on one variable that is most likely to impact Moderna's fortunes over the coming months and years: the emergence of coronavirus variants of concern. Right now, the most important to watch is the Delta variant.
\n
So far, Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine appears to be holding up relatively well against the Delta variant, as well as against other variants of concern. However, there's a real possibility that booster doses could be needed for at least some individuals in the not-too-distant future. Also, other variants could arise for which current vaccines are significantly less effective.
\n
For Moderna to remain a member of the S&P 500, its market cap must remain large enough to be among the top 500 stocks. Whether that will happen depends on recurring demand for its COVID-19 vaccine. However, AstraZeneca will soon acquire the company, meaning S&P Global (NYSE:SPGI) will have to replace Alexion on its heavily followed index.\nAs it turns out, another biotech stock is set to take Alexion's spot: Moderna (NASDAQ:MRNA). S&P Global announced last Thursday evening that Moderna would be added to the S&P 500, effective prior to the market open on July 21. Shares of Moderna jumped over 10% on Friday, after soaring nearly 150% year to date already. What's next for this hot vaccine stock?\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nUsing the past as a guide\nThere's an old saying that \"history doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes.\" Assuming the adage has some truth to it, we could potentially learn how Moderna's share price might fare by looking at what happened with other stocks that were added to the S&P 500.\nSo far in 2021, 10 stocks have been added to the index as a result of acquisitions, spinoffs, and market-cap changes.\nThe most recent of these was Organon (NYSE:OGN). S&P Global announced on May 27 that the drugmaker, which was spun off from Merck, would be added to the S&P 500 index, effective June 4. Organon's shares climbed only around 4% between the date of the announcement and its addition to the index. But afterward, the pharma stock fell close to 15%.\nS&P Global announced on May 10 that Charles River Laboratories (NYSE:CRL) would join the S&P 500 index effective May 14. The diagnostics stock fell a little in the days leading up to its addition to the index. However, after its inclusion on the S&P 500, Charles River Labs stock went on a roll, rising nearly 17%.\nThere is one stock that might offer a closer parallel to Moderna. The stock moved up and down like a yo-yo, and is now 5% lower.\nDifferent dynamics\nYou've probably decided that history is a poor rhymer -- at least when it comes to how stocks perform when they're added to the S&P 500 index. There's a good reason why it's hard to discern a clear pattern: Each stock has different dynamics at work.\nSure, mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track the S&P 500 index must now add shares of Moderna to their holdings. However, they were likely already doing so to some extent, even before the announcement about Moderna's addition to the index.\nWhat matters most for Moderna stock now is exactly the same thing that mattered most before last Thursday. And that critical factor is how demand for the company's COVID-19 vaccine will hold up.\nBased on the stock's trajectory in the weeks and months leading up to S&P Global's announcement that Moderna was replacing Alexion in the S&P 500, investors are expecting that demand for Moderna's vaccine will remain quite strong. They could very well be right.\nThe variant variable\nHowever, whether or not investors' optimism is warranted depends on one variable that is most likely to impact Moderna's fortunes over the coming months and years: the emergence of coronavirus variants of concern. Right now, the most important to watch is the Delta variant.\nSo far, Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine appears to be holding up relatively well against the Delta variant, as well as against other variants of concern. However, there's a real possibility that booster doses could be needed for at least some individuals in the not-too-distant future. Also, other variants could arise for which current vaccines are significantly less effective.\nFor Moderna to remain a member of the S&P 500, its market cap must remain large enough to be among the top 500 stocks. Whether that will happen depends on recurring demand for its COVID-19 vaccine. And that demand depends largely how coronavirus variants affect the pandemic.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":354,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":147654667,"gmtCreate":1626357315559,"gmtModify":1703758586768,"author":{"id":"3582713638290409","authorId":"3582713638290409","name":"MCHAN","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/46f8c875509930334e40ad9bcaa1ac20","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582713638290409","authorIdStr":"3582713638290409"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Carver(CARV)$some push up here ","listText":"$Carver(CARV)$some push up here ","text":"$Carver(CARV)$some push up here","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1b8f70c7cc3cb775170ad10e985a9659","width":"1125","height":"3153"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/147654667","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":364,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":145683995,"gmtCreate":1626221210817,"gmtModify":1703755686187,"author":{"id":"3582713638290409","authorId":"3582713638290409","name":"MCHAN","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/46f8c875509930334e40ad9bcaa1ac20","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582713638290409","authorIdStr":"3582713638290409"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"No surprise which everyone is facing","listText":"No surprise which everyone is facing","text":"No surprise which everyone is facing","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/145683995","repostId":"1187596380","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1187596380","pubTimestamp":1626220324,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1187596380?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-07-14 07:52","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Five Things You Need to Know to Start Your Day","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1187596380","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"Apple is working on a “buy now, pay later” service. and a broad-based rally.
\n
Investors now eye Friday’s much-anticipated employment report.
\n
The bellwether index is enjoying its longest winning streak since early February, and the last time it logged six straight all-time highs was last August.
\n
“Historical data shows if you have a strong first half, the second half of the year was actually going even stronger,” said Ross Mayfield, investment strategy analyst with Baird Private Wealth.
\n
All three major U.S. stock indexes ended the session in positive territory, but a decline in tech shares - led by microchips - tempered the Nasdaq’s gain.
\n
The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor index slid 1.5%
\n
“For markets so far this year, boring is beautiful,” said David Carter, chief investment officer at Lenox Wealth Advisors in New York. “Economic growth has been strong enough to support prices and many asset classes are trading with historically low volatility.”
\n
“It feels like investors left for the Fourth of July weekend about three months ago.”
\n
The ongoing worker shortage, attributed to federal emergency unemployment benefits, a childcare shortage and lingering pandemic fears, was a common theme in the day’s economic data.
\n
Jobless claims continued their downward trajectory according to the Labor Department, touching their lowest level since the pandemic shutdown, and a report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas showed planned layoffs by U.S. firms were down 88% from last year, hitting a 21-year low.
\n
Activity at U.S. factories expanded at a slightly decelerated pace in June, according to the Institute for Supply Management’s (ISM) purchasing managers’ index (PMI), with the employment component dipping into contraction for the first time since November. The prices paid index, driven higher by the current demand/supply imbalance, soared to its highest level since 1979, according to ISM.
\n
“The employment and manufacturing data released today supported the idea of continued growth but at a decelerated rate,” Carter added.
\n
Friday’s hotly anticipated jobs report is expected to show payrolls growing by 700,000 and unemployment inching down to 5.7%. A robust upside surprise could lead the U.S. Federal Reserve to adjust its timetable for tapering its securities purchases and raising key interest rates.
\n
“Too-strong economic data could perversely be a bad thing for markets if it caused the Fed to raise rates faster than expected,” Carter said. “Weak employment data may actually be welcomed.”
\n
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 131.02 points, or 0.38%, to 34,633.53, the S&P 500 gained 22.44 points, or 0.52%, to 4,319.94 and the Nasdaq Composite added 18.42 points, or 0.13%, to 14,522.38.
\n
Of the 11 major sectors in the S&P 500, consumer staples was the sole loser, shedding 0.3%.
\n
Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc dropped 7.4% after it said it expects to administer fewer COVID-19 vaccine shots in the fourth quarter.
\n
Didi Global Inc jumped 16.0%, on its second day of trading as a U.S.-listed company.
\n
Micron Technology Inc slid by 5.7% following a report that Texas Instruments would buy Micron’s Lehi, Utah, factory for $900 million.
\n
Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.78-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.32-to-1 ratio favored advancers.
\n
The S&P 500 posted 36 new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 78 new highs and 30 new lows.
\n
Volume on U.S. exchanges was 9.53 billion shares, compared with the 10.9 billion average over the last 20 trading days.
","source":"lsy1601381805984","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The prices paid index, driven higher by the current demand/supply imbalance, soared to its highest level since 1979, according to ISM.\n“The employment and manufacturing data released today supported the idea of continued growth but at a decelerated rate,” Carter added.\nFriday’s hotly anticipated jobs report is expected to show payrolls growing by 700,000 and unemployment inching down to 5.7%. A robust upside surprise could lead the U.S. Federal Reserve to adjust its timetable for tapering its securities purchases and raising key interest rates.\n“Too-strong economic data could perversely be a bad thing for markets if it caused the Fed to raise rates faster than expected,” Carter said. “Weak employment data may actually be welcomed.”\nThe Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 131.02 points, or 0.38%, to 34,633.53, the S&P 500 gained 22.44 points, or 0.52%, to 4,319.94 and the Nasdaq Composite added 18.42 points, or 0.13%, to 14,522.38.\nOf the 11 major sectors in the S&P 500, consumer staples was the sole loser, shedding 0.3%.\nWalgreens Boots Alliance Inc dropped 7.4% after it said it expects to administer fewer COVID-19 vaccine shots in the fourth quarter.\nDidi Global Inc jumped 16.0%, on its second day of trading as a U.S.-listed company.\nMicron Technology Inc slid by 5.7% following a report that Texas Instruments would buy Micron’s Lehi, Utah, factory for $900 million.\nAdvancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.78-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.32-to-1 ratio favored advancers.\nThe S&P 500 posted 36 new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 78 new highs and 30 new lows.\nVolume on U.S. exchanges was 9.53 billion shares, compared with the 10.9 billion average over the last 20 trading days.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":88,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3571345352614779","authorId":"3571345352614779","name":"xiaobaii","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3571345352614779","authorIdStr":"3571345352614779"},"content":"like & comment please, Thank You Very Much","text":"like & comment please, Thank You Very Much","html":"like & comment please, Thank You Very Much"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":153822021,"gmtCreate":1625018150063,"gmtModify":1703850212899,"author":{"id":"3582713638290409","authorId":"3582713638290409","name":"MCHAN","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/46f8c875509930334e40ad9bcaa1ac20","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582713638290409","authorIdStr":"3582713638290409"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$SEMBCORP MARINE LTD(S51.SI)$Why I can’t sell in & out?","listText":"$SEMBCORP MARINE LTD(S51.SI)$Why I can’t sell in & out?","text":"$SEMBCORP MARINE LTD(S51.SI)$Why I can’t sell in & out?","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a9c935150d3893e9817a23da2c97ea38","width":"1242","height":"1767"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/153822021","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":673,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3576157569101824","authorId":"3576157569101824","name":"zzzerozz","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/74388f85825f84647107da6994f3b116","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3576157569101824","authorIdStr":"3576157569101824"},"content":"if you look at the volume, there are lots of sales queued for 1.3 and below. i assume you are trying to sell at 1.31.","text":"if you look at the volume, there are lots of sales queued for 1.3 and below. i assume you are trying to sell at 1.31.","html":"if you look at the volume, there are lots of sales queued for 1.3 and below. i assume you are trying to sell at 1.31."}],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":143614342,"gmtCreate":1625791515586,"gmtModify":1703748560846,"author":{"id":"3582713638290409","authorId":"3582713638290409","name":"MCHAN","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/46f8c875509930334e40ad9bcaa1ac20","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3582713638290409","authorIdStr":"3582713638290409"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Carver(CARV)$Give a more push up","listText":"$Carver(CARV)$Give a more push up","text":"$Carver(CARV)$Give a more push up","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/50f9b7a535ef78742212794b7b26f435","width":"1125","height":"3248"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/143614342","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":354,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3573820288698286","authorId":"3573820288698286","name":"小人物小妹","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/65c8e18b638d862e8cd070afd9c7038f","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3573820288698286","authorIdStr":"3573820288698286"},"content":"Do you have a chance?
Indexes: Dow -0.31%, S&P 500 -0.35%, Nasdaq -0.38%
\n
\n
(Updates following end of session)
\n
July 13 (Reuters) - The S&P 500 and Nasdaq ended lower on Tuesday after hitting record highs earlier in the session, with investors digesting a jump in consumer prices in June and earnings from JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs that kicked off the quarterly reporting season.
\n
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq reached fresh record highs but quickly fell into negative territory after an auction of 30-year Treasuries showed less demand than some investors expected and pushed yields
