That's a question a lot of investors are asking. And one Wall Street analyst just suggested this stock has roughly 50% more downside, which is saying something considering the stock is already down about 60% from its all-time high. This is partly why, as of the market's close on Thursday, Roku is down 15.1% for 2022.

So what

According to The Fly, Atlantic Equities analyst Hamilton Faber started covering Roku stock earlier this year. Faber started his coverage by slapping a $136-per-share price target on Roku, a roughly 50% downside from where it was trading at the time. Faber believes Roku will struggle to attract TV manufacturer partners for its connected-TV operating system software. For this reason and more, Roku stock doesn't deserve its pricy price-to-sales (P/S) valuation of 10.5, Faber said.

Now what

Let's talk about Roku's business. According to the company, it closed 2020 as the most widely adopted operating system for smart TVs in the U.S. with 38% share of new TVs sold. And in the third quarter of 2021, Roku's 56.4 million active accounts streamed 18 billion hours of content. Both the number of active accounts and the number of hours streamed were up year over year.

It's worth monitoring how well Roku is attracting partners, as Faber suggests. But considering Roku is still executing well, I believe investors should give it the benefit of the doubt for now.

Regarding valuation, if Roku stock fell 50% from here, it would trade at a P/S of roughly 5. Coincidentally, this is about what its valuation was when it went public in 2017. However, back then, Roku's business was more heavily skewed toward its low-profit-margin hardware business. These days, its high-margin software business is in the driver's seat, boosting the company's overall profitability.

Roku's gross margin for the first six months of 2017 was 38.2%. In the third quarter of 2021, it was 53.5%. Because its profitability has improved, assessing its current valuation and its past valuation isn't an apples-to-apples comparison -- higher-profit-margin companies generally have higher P/S valuations. For this reason, I think Roku's valuation is fair today, provided at can continue to gain new active accounts and increase its user monetization.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Here's Why Roku Stock Is Already Down 15% in 2022
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nHere's Why Roku Stock Is Already Down 15% in 2022\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-01-07 22:57 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
What happenedIs Roku (NASDAQ:ROKU) stock grossly overvalued? The unemployment rate likely improved further, reaching 5.2% from the 5.4% reported during July.
\n
The August jobs report is set to be an especially telling report, capturing the impact of the latest surge in coronavirus cases on the U.S. labor market. Other recent economic reports already began to reflect the Delta variant impacts on activity: Job creation in the U.S. services sector slowed by the most since February, while manufacturing sector workforce numbers increased by the least since last year, according to IHS Markit's latest purchasing managers' index reports.
\n
\"High frequency labor market data are signaling a marked slowdown in employment activity in the August payroll survey week, suggesting downside risk to our forecast,\" Bank of America economist Michelle Meyer wrote in a note on Friday, adding that she expects non-farm payrolls to grow by just 600,000 for August.
\n
\"Our below-consensus non-farm payrolls forecast is predicated on the markedly weaker high frequency employment data between the July and August payroll survey periods,\" Meyer added. \"Specifically, the Homebase and UKG employment series were both down 3.4% and 2.4%, respectively, over the month.\"
\n
The outcome of the August jobs report will also be another closely watched data point informing the Federal Reserve's next moves on monetary policy, signaling whether the labor market has recovered enough to warrant a less accommodative tilt. Namely, many Fed officials have been waiting to see the evolution of the labor market recovery to determine the timing for the central bank to announce tapering of its $120 billion per month asset purchase program.
\n
Last week, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said during the central bank's virtual Jackson Hole symposium that there has \"been clear progress toward maximum employment\" and suggested \"it could be appropriate to start reducing the pace of asset purchases this year\" if the recovery continues to improve.
\n
However, he also flagged the ongoing risks introduced by the Delta variant, and added that an \"ill-time policy move\" could knock the recovery off its trajectory.
\n
NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 27: People walk near Little Island park on May 27, 2021 in New York City. Consensus economists expect to see that a still-robust 750,000 jobs came back in August, according to Bloomberg data. This would represent a significant print by pre-pandemic standards, but still mark a deceleration from July's increase of 943,000 jobs. Consensus economists expect to see that a still-robust 750,000 jobs came back in August, according to Bloomberg data.

That's a question a lot of investors are asking. And one Wall Street analyst just suggested this stock has roughly 50% more downside, which is saying something considering the stock is already down about 60% from its all-time high. This is partly why, as of the market's close on Thursday, Roku is down 15.1% for 2022.So whatAccording to The Fly, Atlantic Equities analyst Hamilton Faber started covering Roku stock earlier this year. Now whatLet's talk about Roku's business. But considering Roku is still executing well, I believe investors should give it the benefit of the doubt for now.Regarding valuation, if Roku stock fell 50% from here, it would trade at a P/S of roughly 5. Coincidentally, this is about what its valuation was when it went public in 2017. However, back then, Roku's business was more heavily skewed toward its low-profit-margin hardware business. These days, its high-margin software business is in the driver's seat, boosting the company's overall profitability.Roku's gross margin for the first six months of 2017 was 38.2%. In the third quarter of 2021, it was 53.5%. Because its profitability has improved, assessing its current valuation and its past valuation isn't an apples-to-apples comparison -- higher-profit-margin companies generally have higher P/S valuations.
