Kulkarni keeps his Buy rating and $4,075 target price.</p>\n<p>Evercore ISI analyst Mark Mahaney maintains an Outperform rating and $4,500 target price. In a blog post, Instagram said it was making the change because it agreed with youth advocates that young people might not be equipped to make decisions about targeting.</p>\n<p>Instagram users under 16 years old will also start to be defaulted into having a private account when they join the platform, the company said, in an effort to stop unwanted contact from adults. They will still be given the option, however, to switch to a public account and current users can keep their account as public.</p>\n<p>Facebook's approach to younger users has been in the spotlight after U.S. lawmakers and attorneys general slammed its leaked plans to launch a version of Instagram for children under 13. Earlier this year, a group of more than 40 state attorneys general wrote to CEO Mark Zuckerberg asking him to ditch the idea.</p>\n<p>The company said on Tuesday it was working on an \"Instagram experience for tweens.\" It has said the idea of a youth-focused app is to provide parents greater transparency and controls on what younger children who want to access Instagram are doing.</p>\n<p>Several major social media companies have also rolled out versions of their apps for younger audiences, from Facebook's Messenger Kids to Alphabet Inc -owned YouTube Kids.</p>\n<p>Proponents argue that children are already on a platform and so a family-friendly version provides a safer environment, but critics say Facebook should not be trying to hook young kids on its services due to risks to their development, mental health and privacy.</p>\n<p>Age verification of children is an issue on many social media sites, which prohibit kids under 13 but often fail to identify and remove underage users. In fact, the growing confidence means Chatterjee has added Apple to the firm’s Analyst Focus List as “a Growth idea.”\n“The recent momentum led by better market share, drives us to also estimate higher sustainable volumes in future quarters, leading us to see a path to Apple outperforming investor expectations over a longer time horizon rather than just the upcoming earnings print,” the 5-star analyst said, confirming Apple is also a Top Pick.\nTo reflect the increase in build rates, Chatterjee has “modestly” increased iPhone volume expectations, but of more importance to the analyst is the “path to upside” for the shares in the medium-term.\nThis is because of the potential for better iPhone 12 sales but also due to what Chatterjee considers are low expectations from the iPhone 13’s fall launch, which could create “another leg to the upside opportunity.”\nIt’s a potent mix which is given additional allure with the launch of the iPhone SE3 next year and means Apple can “not only pleasantly surprise with a more robust iPhone 13 cycle, but also has the opportunity to drive material upside to consensus expectations for FY22.”\nTo this end, Chatterjee rates Apple shares an Overweight (i.e. Buy), while slightly lifting the price target from $170 to $175. Still, by making sure you have cash available before the next crash, you set yourself up to be much better situated after the crash happens.</p>\n<p>There are a couple of key reasons for this. First, stock market crashes and job losses often go hand in hand with each other. If you lose your job after the market crashes, having a cash reserve can go a long way toward keeping you from having to sell near market lows.</p>\n<p>Second, if you have cash available, buying stocks <i>after </i>they've crashed is a great way to make your money work harder for you. Selling one cheap stock after a crash to buy another doesn't make all that much sense, but raising cash when stocks are pricy to invest when they're cheap can be a much smarter wealth building strategy.</p>\n<p>The key trade-off, of course, is that money you have set aside in cash isn't earning much in the way of a return at the moment, especially when compared to inflation. A good rule of thumb is that you need at least a 3-6 month emergency fund in cash. In addition, having around 5 or so years' worth of expenses you need your portfolio to cover in a less volatile and higher certainty investment than stocks can help you ride out typical downturns.</p>\n<h2>No. 2: Know the value of what you own</h2>\n<p>Ultimately, a share of stock is nothing more than a fractional ownership stake in a business. A reasonable value can be estimated for most companies by using techniques like the discounted cash flow model to assess the current value of its expected future earnings stream. In a rapidly rising market, relying on valuations can seem old school, but when the market is crashing, valuation plays a much bigger role.</p>\n<p>A key reason is this: if you can buy a company for a reasonable or even cheap price based on its ability to generate cold hard cash, why would you sell just because the market is panicking? Indeed, a discounted cash flow analysis or other fundamentals-based valuation technique can help the savviest investors know why it's OK to buy more shares even as the market is collapsing.</p>\n<p>Beyond that, understanding what a company is really worth can help you prepare for a crash. If a stock you own has risen to the point where there is absolutely no financial justification for its market price, it might be a good candidate to sell to raise the cash you need.</p>\n<h2>No. 3: Have a shopping list of companies you want to buy</h2>\n<p>Even the best investors can feel overwhelmed as the market moves swiftly and strongly against them. That's where having a plan for what you'd like to buy -- and at what price -- can come in handy. With a list of great companies and a reasonable valuation estimate for each of them, a market crash can turn into an incredible buying opportunity to buy their stocks while they're on sale.</p>\n<p>Of course, you do need to keep in mind that the market often has a good reason for crashing in the first place. As a result, when the market offers you what looks like a great price to buy a company you're interested in owning, do take a moment to refresh your estimate of the company's value before buying. If the company's shares tanked because its business is failing, it's probably not worth owning. If its stock was unfairly discarded in a general market panic, however, it could be a great time to buy in big.</p>\n<h2>No. 4: Keep smartly diversified</h2>\n<p>Often, when the overall market crashes, it's because an entire industry finds itself in trouble. For instance, consider the dot.com implosion in 2000 or the financial crisis in 2008. If a big chunk of your money is chasing the next hot thing and that particular thing is what drives the next market crash, then you can be in a world of hurt. If the companies you own wind up out of business, then their shares -- and the money you have invested in them -- won't be participating in any rally that follows.</p>\n<p>When times are good, portfolio diversification may seem like a fairly meaningless exercise. After all, it can't help you earn better returns in a raging bull market. When the market is in a panic, however, there is incredible value in its ability to limit the impact that any one company or industry's failing will have on your overall net worth. After all, limiting the unrecoverable damage of a crash is key to being able to participate in any subsequent recovery.</p>\n<h2>You can make it through the next crash</h2>\n<p>Stock market crashes are inevitable. There's not much you can do to avoid them aside from not investing at all, and that can be incredibly hazardous to your long term net worth. With these four approaches, you can improve your odds of making it through the next crash intact and potentially even emerging in a better position once it ends.</p>\n<p>The key thing to note about these techniques, though, is that they work better if you get them in place <i>before </i>the next crash happens. The key is to get prepared before the crash so that when it comes, you have the tools you need already available to you. These four ways can help you be ready in advance.\nImage source: Getty Images\nNo. 1: Raise the cash you need before the crash happens\nWith even top-rated savings accounts yielding well below inflation , it's really hard to hold a substantial amount of cash right now. Still, by making sure you have cash available before the next crash, you set yourself up to be much better situated after the crash happens.\nThere are a couple of key reasons for this. First, stock market crashes and job losses often go hand in hand with each other. If you lose your job after the market crashes, having a cash reserve can go a long way toward keeping you from having to sell near market lows.\nSecond, if you have cash available, buying stocks after they've crashed is a great way to make your money work harder for you. Selling one cheap stock after a crash to buy another doesn't make all that much sense, but raising cash when stocks are pricy to invest when they're cheap can be a much smarter wealth building strategy.\nThe key trade-off, of course, is that money you have set aside in cash isn't earning much in the way of a return at the moment, especially when compared to inflation. A good rule of thumb is that you need at least a 3-6 month emergency fund in cash. In addition, having around 5 or so years' worth of expenses you need your portfolio to cover in a less volatile and higher certainty investment than stocks can help you ride out typical downturns.\nNo. 2: Know the value of what you own\nUltimately, a share of stock is nothing more than a fractional ownership stake in a business. A reasonable value can be estimated for most companies by using techniques like the discounted cash flow model to assess the current value of its expected future earnings stream. That's where having a plan for what you'd like to buy -- and at what price -- can come in handy. It’s an elite club.</p>\n<p>Now that Facebook (ticker: FB) has earned access—its market cap was down slightly by the end of the week, to $980 billion—we might be waiting a while for the next entrant. That’s partly because the federal government wants to rein in big business, but also because the current trillion-dollar members have a natural incentive to keep the club small.</p>\n<p>There’s a big drop-off to the next candidate for membership—call it the Trillion-Dollar Cliff. Among U.S.-listed companies,Tesla(TSLA) is next up, with a market value of $629 billion, followed by&nbsp;Berkshire Hathaway(BRK.A),Alibaba Group Holding(BABA),Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing(TSM), and&nbsp;Visa(V).</p>\n<p>We’ve covered all of those stocks closely at&nbsp;Barron’s, and I’ve spent the past few weeks talking to colleagues about which company might be next. I’ve also queried sources and polled readers of our daily Review &amp; Preview newsletter.</p>\n<p>A few names get repeated mentions: Tesla,Nvidia(NVDA), Visa, and&nbsp;JPMorgan Chase(JPM), each of which are worth at least $400 billion.Shopify(SHOP) got a less obvious mention. The company is way down the market-value rank at $182 billion. It has become something of the anti-Amazon,providing bricks-and-mortar vendors and other businesses with easy e-commerce tools. While&nbsp;Amazon.com(AMZN) seeks to fend off regulation and a potential breakup, Shopify can keep its head down and continue to recruit new business.</p>\n<p>I’ll place my bets on Visa getting to $1 trillion next, even if it takes a while. The company is closely tied to the economic recovery, since it gets a cut of transactions that run through its global electronic-payments network.</p>\n<p>The business, which is part tech and part financial services, has a long tailwind as cash usage declines around the world. Visa shares have returned an annualized 28% over the past decade. If that pattern holds, Visa would reach $1 trillion by 2024.</p>\n<p>While the next trillion-dollar stock is clearly a guessing game, one thing is clear: Large numbers have been no impediment to future gains.Apple(AAPL) has returned an annualized 44% since it became the first U.S.-listed company to reach a $1 trillion value in August 2018. The stock closed at a record this past week, giving it a market value of $2.4 trillion.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ed700f7a7812c0bf7b9b205ad99c33e7\" tg-width=\"872\" tg-height=\"769\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>I asked Denise Chisholm, Fidelity’s sector strategist, if the so-called law of large numbers would ever kick in. “Size is not particularly predictive one way or the other,” she says. “The S&amp;P information technology, as a percent of overall S&amp;P, is now in excess of 20%. Does that have any meaning on whether or not that group or that sector can outperform in the future? The answer really is no.”</p>\n<p>Right now, the trillion-dollar members have momentum on their side. “A ball in motion tends to stay in motion,” she says.</p>\n<p>Tech’s secret sauce has been continuously expanding profit margins, with valuations that are essentially in line with their historic norms. Operating margins for the S&amp;P 500’s information technology sector have doubled in the past 15 years, to a recent 21%, according to Yardeni Research, while overall S&amp;P 500 margins have been static at 10% or so (excluding a collapse during the financial crisis).</p>\n<p>Tech’s magic—and those trillion-dollar club passes—are now hitting up against the increased likelihood of regulation. “The sheer fact of the headline of the trillion-dollar club is going to bring even more regulation,” says Jim Paulsen, chief investment officer of The Leuthold Group.</p>\n<p>On Friday, the Biden administration signed an executive order that calls for a “whole-of-government effort to promote competition in the American economy.” The order, which consists of 72 initiatives, is simultaneously broad and narrow. It pushes against consolidation while also addressing consumer pain points, like early-termination fees for broadband services, hard-to-fix consumer devices, and airline baggage fees.</p>\n<p>By now, the Biden administration recognizes that tech regulation isn’t a slam dunk with the public. Despite unease around data and privacy practices, less than half of U.S. adults are in favor of more tech regulation, according to a 2020 Pew Research poll.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/963cb5c585db8df9615cd98e0bbd4bbc\" tg-width=\"1260\" tg-height=\"840\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>A room at the F8 Developers Conference in San Jose, Calif.</span></p>\n<p>Privacy regulation is politically complicated, especially if it means reining in the advertising that enables free services like social media, internet search, and email. But there isn’t much controversial about limiting broadband charges or making it easier to fix a smartphone battery. The White House seems to be attacking companies where it hurts—their mixed record of customer service.</p>\n<p>For now, investors continue to generally overlook regulation. The stock closed at a record this past week, giving it a market value of $2.4 trillion.\n\nI asked Denise Chisholm, Fidelity’s sector strategist, if the so-called law of large numbers would ever kick in. “Size is not particularly predictive one way or the other,” she says. “The S&P information technology, as a percent of overall S&P, is now in excess of 20%. Does that have any meaning on whether or not that group or that sector can outperform in the future? The answer really is no.”\nRight now, the trillion-dollar members have momentum on their side. “A ball in motion tends to stay in motion,” she says.\nTech’s secret sauce has been continuously expanding profit margins, with valuations that are essentially in line with their historic norms. It pushes against consolidation while also addressing consumer pain points, like early-termination fees for broadband services, hard-to-fix consumer devices, and airline baggage fees.\nBy now, the Biden administration recognizes that tech regulation isn’t a slam dunk with the public. That compares to shockingly large estimated increases in industrial sector profits of more than 570%, and energy industry profits, up 220%. Earnings for the financial and materials sectors are expected to be up more than 100% each.\nThose huge gains and expected earnings beats should be a positive for some cyclical stocks this quarter. Earnings season kicks off Tuesday with reports fromJPMorgan Chase,Goldman Sachs,andPepsiCo.\nThis earnings season will be the period where the tug of war that’s been a factor in the stock market, between cyclical and growth trades, is due to play out very clearly in the earnings numbers. Inflationary pressures, negative for tech stock performance, are expected to help boost cyclical earnings growth in the rebound, as companies face rising input costs but also up their prices.\n“I think what you’re going to see is a very unusual kind of contradiction between the data and the narrative,” said Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist at Credit Suisse. “What companies are going to say is they are facing shortages and rising input costs and other things which are constraints to their success. And then what you’re going to see is massive beats and the biggest portions coming from higher margins. They’re not going to try to reconcile it.”\nGolub expects companies to provide detail on rising costs and supply shortages but not as much information on how much they are raising prices or how broadly.\n“If you listen to what the CFOs are going to say, you’re going to think the earnings are terrible, but if you look at the results, they’re going to be magnificent,” he said.\nBut ultimately, it’s tech and growth that will prove to be the best performers profit-wise over the long haul. “Their own earnings revisions for themselves are still good. They’re not deteriorating. They’re solid. They’re not getting worse. They’re not accelerating in this ridiculous way. They’re on the same solid trajectory they’ve been on,” said Brian Rauscher, Fundstrat head of global portfolio strategy.\nRauscher expects the trend to revert back to tech as the better earnings performer in two quarters from now, when cyclical airline stocks or industrial stocks like Caterpillar will see earnings growth back in the single digits. “Tech will keep growing at 25%,” he said.\nHe says economic growth will have slowed to a more normalized and sustained pace. By then it will be more apparent whether inflation is temporary or not.\n“If they are unable to pass along price increases, it will hit the earnings,” he said.\nGolub points out that tech profits in last year’s second quarter actually increased by 3.3% from 2019, as cyclical earnings plunged 85% in the same period. The 2021 second quarter earnings growth estimate for tech is 34.2%, while some cyclical earnings will rebound by more than 570% just to get back to even with 2019.\n“It says one of these is a near term trade, and one of them is a long term trade,” said Golub. “Once the supply chain issues are gone, [cyclicals] are going to be unimpressive.”\nEven with the push pull of tech and growth versus cyclical trades, strategists say the earning season should be good for the stock market.\n“I think the numbers will be very good, and it’ll be supportive for markets,” said Rauscher. He said some investors may be concerned that a peak period of earnings this quarter will lead to a market decline but he doesn’t expect that to be the case.\n“Obviously, the numbers are going to be outsized because we have that weird comparison from last year. I think the important thing is going to be the return of guidance,” Rauscher said. Or you may need investment income to replace part of your working income when you retire.</p>\n<p>Here's a recent list of the 30 stocks in the S&amp;P 500 index whose dividends increased the most over the past five years . Their dividend yields may not have been very high to begin with, but if you had held them for five years, the yields on your five-year-old shares would have grown significantly.</p>\n<p>For this new screen, we took a different approach to focus more on higher current dividend yields. Beginning with the S&amp;P Composite 1500 Index (made up of the S&amp;P 500 , the S&amp;P Mid Cap 400 Index <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MID\">$(MID)$</a> and the S&amp;P Small Cap 600 Index ), we started with stocks with dividend yields of at least 4.26% -- three times the 1.42% yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury notes on July 13.</p>\n<p>Then we looked at free cash flow yields. A company's free cash flow is its remaining cash flow after planned capital expenditures. It can be used to increase dividends, buy back stock, pay down debt, business expansion or fund acquisitions. A free cash flow yield that is higher than the dividend yield can provide investors with some comfort that a company is unlikely to cut its dividend and maybe be in a position to increase it.</p>\n<p>A trailing free cash flow yield can be calculated by dividing the past four quarters' free cash flow per share by the current share price. If available, consensus estimates for the next 12 months can be used to calculate a forward FCF yield. If the FCF yield is above the current dividend yield, there is free cash flow \"headroom.\" (The screen below only includes companies for which forward FCF estimates were available from FactSet.)</p>\n<p>Financial companies were excluded from the screen, as FCF yield analysis isn't appropriate for the group. Companies with fewer than five analysts polled for FactSet's estimates were also excluded. For real estate investment trusts, funds from operations (FFO) is the industry standard for gauging dividend-paying ability. Ordinarily that would appear to be plenty of headroom to support the dividend. But it implies a payout ratio of 62%, which is much higher than the ratio of the current yield to the forward FCF yield.</p>\n<p>REITs</p>\n<p>For a second screen of real estate investment trusts, we used funds from operations (FFO) instead of free cash flow. FFO adds depreciation on real estate to earnings and nets out gains or losses on the sale of property. Or you may need investment income to replace part of your working income when you retire.</p>\n<p>Here's a recent list of the 30 stocks in the S&amp;P 500 index whose dividends increased the most over the past five years . Their dividend yields may not have been very high to begin with, but if you had held them for five years, the yields on your five-year-old shares would have grown significantly.</p>\n<p>For this new screen, we took a different approach to focus more on higher current dividend yields. Beginning with the S&amp;P Composite 1500 Index (made up of the S&amp;P 500 , the S&amp;P Mid Cap 400 Index <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MID\">$(MID)$</a> and the S&amp;P Small Cap 600 Index ), we started with stocks with dividend yields of at least 4.26% -- three times the 1.42% yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury notes on July 13.</p>\n<p>Then we looked at free cash flow yields. A company's free cash flow is its remaining cash flow after planned capital expenditures. It can be used to increase dividends, buy back stock, pay down debt, business expansion or fund acquisitions. A free cash flow yield that is higher than the dividend yield can provide investors with some comfort that a company is unlikely to cut its dividend and maybe be in a position to increase it.</p>\n<p>A trailing free cash flow yield can be calculated by dividing the past four quarters' free cash flow per share by the current share price. If available, consensus estimates for the next 12 months can be used to calculate a forward FCF yield. If the FCF yield is above the current dividend yield, there is free cash flow \"headroom.\" (The screen below only includes companies for which forward FCF estimates were available from FactSet.)</p>\n<p>Financial companies were excluded from the screen, as FCF yield analysis isn't appropriate for the group. Companies with fewer than five analysts polled for FactSet's estimates were also excluded. For real estate investment trusts, funds from operations (FFO) is the industry standard for gauging dividend-paying ability. Revenue exploded 140% higher in the first quarter of this year.</p>\n<p>There were 43 million users by the end of March, up 37% over the past year. A lack of profitability is a concern, but Roblox continues to improve its ability to monetize its platform. Wood was trimming her Roblox position in early June, but she's been buying back the stock in recent weeks.</p>\n<h2>Coinbase</h2>\n<p>Another recent IPO that Wood has been buying aggressively is Coinbase. The leading cryptocurrency marketplace may have timed its debut poorly. It went public in April, just as the leading cryptocurrencies were peaking.
