Splits are purely a cosmetic tool in the sense that they have no impact on a company's underlying operations or its market cap. Rather, they're designed to increase or decrease a company's share price, often with a very clear purpose.

A reverse split aims to increase a company's share price, usually with the goal of maintaining its listing on a major stock exchange. Since this type of split is often conducted by struggling businesses, it's one that investors tend to shy away from.

On the other hand, forward stock splits reduce a company's share price to make it more nominally affordable to retail investors and/or employees who can't purchase fractional shares. This type of split is typically completed by top-notch businesses that are out-innovating and out-executing their peers. Unsurprisingly, this is where a majority of investors focus their attention.

Since 2024 began, a little over a dozen prominent businesses have announced or completed a stock split; only one was a reverse split.

Billionaire investors have certainly taken note of the outperformance of the Class of 2024 stock-split stocks. However, their outlook for this group is mixed.

While most investors have been fixated on brand-name stock-split stocks, such as Nvidia (NVDA 3.97%), billionaire money managers have been quietly sending shares of Nvidia to the chopping block in favor of two off-the-radar stock-split stocks.

Wall Street's smartest and richest asset managers are passing on Nvidia

Though it was Walmart that officially kicked off stock-split euphoria early in 2024, there hasn't been a more-anticipated split this year than Nvidia's. The AI juggernaut completed its historic 10-for-1 forward split following the close of trading on June 7.

Even though Nvidia's AI graphics processing units (GPUs) are dominating in AI-accelerated data centers, this hasn't halted a nine-month exodus by billionaire asset managers from the company's stock. Based on form 13F filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission for the June-ended quarter, seven billionaires were sellers, including (total shares sold in parenthesis):

Ken Griffin of Citadel (9,282,018 shares)

David Tepper of Appaloosa Management (3,730,000)

Stanley Druckenmiller of Duquesne Family Office (1,545,370)

Cliff Asness of AQR Capital Management (1,360,215)

Israel Englander of Millennium Management (676,242)

Steven Cohen of Point72 Asset Management (409,042)

Philippe Laffont of Coatue Management (96,963)

<app :collapse_on_load=\"false\" :instrument_id=\"204770\" :show_benchmark_compare=\"false\" amount_change=\"4.50\" average_volume=\"340,036,574\" company_name=\"Nvidia\" current_price=\"117.87\" daily_high=\"119.66\" daily_low=\"117.25\" default_period=\"FiveYear\" dividend_yield=\"0.02%\" exchange=\"NASDAQ\" fifty_two_week_high=\"140.76\" fifty_two_week_low=\"11.70\" gross_margin=\"75.98\" logo=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/art/companylogos/mark/NVDA.png\" market_cap=\"$2,891B\" pe_ratio=\"55.34\" percent_change=\"3.97\" symbol=\"NVDA\" volume=\"674,917\"></app>

Although ringing the register following a greater than 700% gain since the start of 2023 likely explains some of this continued selling activity, history might be the primary culprit that has billionaires eager to reduce their stake in Nvidia.

Since the broad-based proliferation of the internet three decades ago, we haven't witnessed a single highly touted innovation, technology, or trend escape a bubble early in its existence. This is to say that investors have consistently overshot how quickly a new innovation would have utility or become mainstream. Considering that most businesses lack a well-defined plan to generate a positive return on their AI investments, we're likely witnessing the early stages of an AI bubble.

Billionaires might also be following the cue of CEO Jensen Huang and other Nvidia insiders. Huang has been a persistent seller of his company's stock since the midpoint of June. To boot, no company insiders have made an open-market purchase of their company's stock since December 2020. If insiders don't view their stock as a good value, why would billionaire money managers think it's a deal?

The final catalyst behind this selling looks to be increasing competition. Besides external competitors bringing their AI GPUs to market, Nvidia's top customers by net sales are also internally developing chips for use in their high-performance-computing data centers.

Instead of focusing on Wall Street's most-popular stock-split stock of 2024, billionaire money managers chose to pile into two of the most under-the-radar companies enacting splits.

Sony Group

The first stock-split stock that has garnered only a fraction of the attention that Nvidia has -- but had investors champing at the bit to purchase shares in the second quarter -- is consumer electronics provider Sony Group (SONY 3.03%). Sony's American depositary receipts (ADRs), which are set to split 5-for-1 on Oct. 8, had six billionaire buyers in the June-ended quarter (total shares purchased in parenthesis):

Ken Fisher of Fisher Investments (847,814 shares)

Ken Griffin of Citadel (251,987)

Israel Englander of Millennium Management (71,777)

John Overdeck and Davd Siegel of Two Sigma (19,400)

Cliff Asness of AQR Capital Management (4,573)

Although it has been nearly four years since Sony introduced its PlayStation 5 gaming console, the company is finding new and innovative ways to spur growth in its consumer-facing gaming segment. On top of increasing the price of its console in Japan to boost sales, it's been enjoying a notable uptick in PlayStation Plus revenue. This subscription service allows users to game with their friends, access exclusive games, and store their data in the cloud.

We're also inching closer to the expected release of Sony's next-generation gaming console. While this release is still probably two years away, it's not uncommon for investors to anticipate the sales and profit boost that console makers enjoy when releasing new systems.

<app :collapse_on_load=\"false\" :instrument_id=\"205478\" :show_benchmark_compare=\"false\" amount_change=\"2.74\" average_volume=\"798,306\" company_name=\"Sony Group\" current_price=\"93.23\" daily_high=\"93.56\" daily_low=\"92.62\" default_period=\"FiveYear\" dividend_yield=\"0.60%\" exchange=\"NYSE\" fifty_two_week_high=\"100.88\" fifty_two_week_low=\"75.11\" gross_margin=\"30.56\" logo=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/art/companylogos/mark/SONY.png\" market_cap=\"$114B\" pe_ratio=\"17.34\" percent_change=\"3.03\" symbol=\"SONY\" volume=\"416\"></app>

Beyond gaming, Sony Group's Imaging and Sensing Solutions (I&SS) segment is enjoying meaningful growth, with sales up 21% year over year. It is a key supplier of image sensors used in next-generation smartphones and digital cameras. In particular, the ongoing rollout of 5G networks by wireless companies, and the desire of businesses and consumers to take advantage of these faster download speeds, has led to a device replacement cycle that's lifted demand for Sony's products.

The final piece of the puzzle is that Sony's board has authorized the repurchase of up to 30 million shares, representing close to 2.5% of its outstanding share count. For companies with steady or growing net income, buybacks have a way of boosting earnings per share and making a company more fundamentally attractive to investors.

Cintas

The other under-the-radar stock-split stock that billionaire money managers have decisively chosen over Nvidia is Cintas (CTAS 1.17%). The provider of corporate uniforms and business services completed its largest-ever forward split (4-for-1) last week and had four billionaire buyers during the second quarter:

Israel Englander of Millennium Management (1,117,976 shares)

Jeff Yass of Susquehanna International Group (164,424)

John Overdeck and David Siegel of Two Sigma (155,932)

<app :collapse_on_load=\"false\" :instrument_id=\"203230\" :show_benchmark_compare=\"false\" amount_change=\"2.36\" average_volume=\"1,687,569\" company_name=\"Cintas\" current_price=\"203.74\" daily_high=\"205.38\" daily_low=\"202.30\" default_period=\"FiveYear\" dividend_yield=\"0.69%\" exchange=\"NASDAQ\" fifty_two_week_high=\"209.12\" fifty_two_week_low=\"50.48\" gross_margin=\"47.16\" logo=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/art/companylogos/mark/CTAS.png\" market_cap=\"$82B\" pe_ratio=\"53.79\" percent_change=\"1.17\" symbol=\"CTAS\" volume=\"1,243,835\"></app>

Aside from the excitement surrounding the company's first stock split in 24 years, the primary lure for Cintas is that it's cyclical. In other words, it ebbs and flows with the health of the U.S. economy.

Though recessions are an inevitable part of the economic cycle, they are known for resolving quickly. Only three of 12 U.S. recessions since the end of World War II surpassed the 12-month mark, and none endured longer than 18 months. By comparison, most periods of growth have easily topped 18 months. Aligning Cintas' success with the U.S. economy has allowed it to grow steadily over the long run.

Cintas also has more than 1 million corporate clients. Providing everything from uniforms to floor mats, soap dispensers, and safety kits ensures that no single business is crucial to its success or capable of rocking the boat.

However, the one glaring concern with Cintas is the company's valuation. Splits are purely a cosmetic tool in the sense that they have no impact on a company's underlying operations or its market cap. Rather, they're designed to increase or decrease a company's share price, often with a very clear purpose.A reverse split aims to increase a company's share price, usually with the goal of maintaining its listing on a major stock exchange. Since this type of split is often conducted by struggling businesses, it's one that investors tend to shy away from.Image source: Getty Images. On the other hand, forward stock splits reduce a company's share price to make it more nominally affordable to retail investors and/or employees who can't purchase fractional shares. This type of split is typically completed by top-notch businesses that are out-innovating and out-executing their peers. Unsurprisingly, this is where a majority of investors focus their attention.Since 2024 began, a little over a dozen prominent businesses have announced or completed a stock split; only one was a reverse split.Billionaire investors have certainly taken note of the outperformance of the Class of 2024 stock-split stocks. However, their outlook for this group is mixed. While most investors have been fixated on brand-name stock-split stocks, such as Nvidia (NVDA 3.97%), billionaire money managers have been quietly sending shares of Nvidia to the chopping block in favor of two off-the-radar stock-split stocks.Wall Street's smartest and richest asset managers are passing on NvidiaThough it was Walmart that officially kicked off stock-split euphoria early in 2024, there hasn't been a more-anticipated split this year than Nvidia's. The AI juggernaut completed its historic 10-for-1 forward split following the close of trading on June 7.Even though Nvidia's AI graphics processing units (GPUs) are dominating in AI-accelerated data centers, this hasn't halted a nine-month exodus by billionaire asset managers from the company's stock. Based on form 13F filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission for the June-ended quarter, seven billionaires were sellers, including (total shares sold in parenthesis):Ken Griffin of Citadel (9,282,018 shares)David Tepper of Appaloosa Management (3,730,000)Stanley Druckenmiller of Duquesne Family Office (1,545,370)Cliff Asness of AQR Capital Management (1,360,215)Israel Englander of Millennium Management (676,242)Steven Cohen of Point72 Asset Management (409,042)Philippe Laffont of Coatue Management (96,963)Although ringing the register following a greater than 700% gain since the start of 2023 likely explains some of this continued selling activity, history might be the primary culprit that has billionaires eager to reduce their stake in Nvidia.Since the broad-based proliferation of the internet three decades ago, we haven't witnessed a single highly touted innovation, technology, or trend escape a bubble early in its existence. This is to say that investors have consistently overshot how quickly a new innovation would have utility or become mainstream. Considering that most businesses lack a well-defined plan to generate a positive return on their AI investments, we're likely witnessing the early stages of an AI bubble.Billionaires might also be following the cue of CEO Jensen Huang and other Nvidia insiders. Besides external competitors bringing their AI GPUs to market, Nvidia's top customers by net sales are also internally developing chips for use in their high-performance-computing data centers.Instead of focusing on Wall Street's most-popular stock-split stock of 2024, billionaire money managers chose to pile into two of the most under-the-radar companies enacting splits.Image source: Getty Images.Sony GroupThe first stock-split stock that has garnered only a fraction of the attention that Nvidia has -- but had investors champing at the bit to purchase shares in the second quarter -- is consumer electronics provider Sony Group (SONY 3.03%). Sony's American depositary receipts (ADRs), which are set to split 5-for-1 on Oct. 8, had six billionaire buyers in the June-ended quarter (total shares purchased in parenthesis):Ken Fisher of Fisher Investments (847,814 shares)Ken Griffin of Citadel (251,987)Israel Englander of Millennium Management (71,777)John Overdeck and Davd Siegel of Two Sigma (19,400)Cliff Asness of AQR Capital Management (4,573)Although it has been nearly four years since Sony introduced its PlayStation 5 gaming console, the company is finding new and innovative ways to spur growth in its consumer-facing gaming segment. While this release is still probably two years away, it's not uncommon for investors to anticipate the sales and profit boost that console makers enjoy when releasing new systems.Beyond gaming, Sony Group's Imaging and Sensing Solutions (I&SS) segment is enjoying meaningful growth, with sales up 21% year over year. For companies with steady or growing net income, buybacks have a way of boosting earnings per share and making a company more fundamentally attractive to investors.CintasThe other under-the-radar stock-split stock that billionaire money managers have decisively chosen over Nvidia is Cintas (CTAS 1.17%). The provider of corporate uniforms and business services completed its largest-ever forward split (4-for-1) last week and had four billionaire buyers during the second quarter:Israel Englander of Millennium Management (1,117,976 shares)Jeff Yass of Susquehanna International Group (164,424)John Overdeck and David Siegel of Two Sigma (155,932)Aside from the excitement surrounding the company's first stock split in 24 years, the primary lure for Cintas is that it's cyclical. In other words, it ebbs and flows with the health of the U.S. economy.Though recessions are an inevitable part of the economic cycle, they are known for resolving quickly. Only three of 12 U.S. recessions since the end of World War II surpassed the 12-month mark, and none endured longer than 18 months. By comparison, most periods of growth have easily topped 18 months. Aligning Cintas' success with the U.S. economy has allowed it to grow steadily over the long run.Cintas also has more than 1 million corporate clients. Providing everything from uniforms to floor mats, soap dispensers, and safety kits ensures that no single business is crucial to its success or capable of rocking the boat. However, the one glaring concern with Cintas is the company's valuation. While there's no denying that bolt-on acquisitions and ongoing product innovation have helped Cintas sustain high-single-digit growth, its forward price-to-earnings ratio of 45 implies that it's priced for perfection -- something for current and prospective investors to keep in mind.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":112,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":350768833675592,"gmtCreate":1726662420244,"gmtModify":1726662423569,"author":{"id":"3583884337664128","authorId":"3583884337664128","name":"Dragonize","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b292e50e34fd86a7f8bc244692dcb651","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3583884337664128","authorIdStr":"3583884337664128"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Run","listText":"Run","text":"Run","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/350768833675592","repostId":"2468307583","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2468307583","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1726658100,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2468307583?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2024-09-18 19:15","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Nvidia's CEO Sold Over $700 Million in Stock. Even though Nvidia achieved several highs in the past few months, he kept selling, which may lead some people to believe that because Nvidia's insiders are selling, they know the business is at the top.

So, with the head man dumping stock, should you follow suit? Or is there something else going on here?

Just because a CEO is selling a stock doesn't mean the company is doomed

First, let's remember a fact: These CEOs are human. They're not robots, so they have needs and wants as well. What are some reasons you may sell stock? You may want to buy a car, invest in something else, purchase a house, or pay for a kid's college tuition. These companies are best positioned to benefit from the coming wave of adoption.","content":"

When we look back years from now, 2023 will likely be seen as the year artificial intelligence (AI) came of age. Early this year, ChatGPT quickly set the record for fastest growing consumer application in history, attracting 100 million users within two months of its debut. The next-generation chatbot, powered by generative AI, attracted an estimated 1.4 billion visits over the past month alone, according to Similarweb.

Excitement regarding the potential productivity enhancements and vast number of use cases for generative AI has helped propel the market higher this year. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite is up roughly 30% thus far in 2023, causing some to wonder if the stock market has simply risen too far, too fast.

One Wall Street veteran believes there's still much more to come and that tech stocks will \"rip higher\" heading into 2024, led by the next level of AI adoption.

A precarious balance

The Federal Reserve Bank is meeting this week to decide the fate of short-term interest rates, and Wall Street has been concerned that additional rate hikes could stifle further market gains. Furthermore, the yield on 10-year Treasury notes currently sits above 4%, which could entice some investors to pull money from the market in favor of a relatively risk-free return guaranteed by the U.S. government, further reducing demand for stocks.

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives believes this \"will-they-or-won't-they\" debate about the Fed is causing investors to miss the forest for the trees, which should instead be focusing on what's ahead for 2024.

AI is driving this train

While AI has drummed up plenty of attention this year, it's still in the early stages of adoption. The earliest beneficiary of the AI revolution is Nvidia (NVDA -0.20%), which supplies the chips and accompanying software that make AI possible. In its fiscal 2024 second quarter (ended July 30), Nvidia delivered record revenue of $13.5 billion, an increase of 101% year over year. At the same time, its earnings per share (EPS) of $2.48 climbed 854%.

Microsoft (MSFT -0.14%) has also set the stage to benefit from AI. The company has begun to integrate generative AI tools into many of its most popular products and services and is charging $30 per user per month for its Microsoft 365 AI Copilot. This could add as much as $100 billion in incremental revenue for Microsoft by 2027, according to several analysts. Furthermore, as one of the largest cloud infrastructure providers, Microsoft is well-positioned to upsell these AI tools to its enterprise users.

Three stocks for the next wave of adoption

With the first wave well underway, investors should be focused on what's to come. Ives contends that while Nvidia and Microsoft still represent compelling opportunities, they represent the first wave of AI adoption, but there's still a vast opportunity ahead. In a recent industry note, he writes:

Today, it's Nvidia on the front line supplying the graphics processing units/chips, but ultimately the most important takeaway is transformational AI growth is now coming to software, chips, [and] digital media over the coming years, with $1 trillion of spending in clear sights for the tech sector.

He believes the biggest opportunities, representing \"the second/third/fourth derivatives of AI spend\" will begin to manifest early next year, and the \"impact of the AI cycle on consumer internet will be massive.\"

<app :collapse_on_load=\"false\" :instrument_id=\"203768\" :show_benchmark_compare=\"true\" amount_change=\"-0.48\" average_volume=\"28,738,605\" company_name=\"Alphabet\" current_price=\"137.56\" daily_high=\"138.08\" daily_low=\"137.49\" default_period=\"FiveYear\" dividend_yield=\"N/A\" exchange=\"NASDAQ\" fifty_two_week_high=\"139.16\" fifty_two_week_low=\"83.34\" gross_margin=\"55.38\" logo=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/art/companylogos/mark/GOOGL.png\" market_cap=\"$1,741B\" pe_ratio=\"29.20\" percent_change=\"-0.35\" symbol=\"GOOGL\" volume=\"874,088\"></app>

Ives believes the most obvious beneficiaries will be the cloud infrastructure providers, including Amazon (AMZN 0.30%) Web Services and Alphabet's (GOOGL -0.35%) (GOOG -0.40%) Google Cloud. These companies are in the process of acquiring chips with the computational horsepower necessary to power these advanced systems, building out their AI capabilities, and ultimately selling these services to their cloud customers. Furthermore, AI-powered services will be integrated into Amazon's digital retail and Google's search, offering additional ways to profit.

Another company poised to benefit by integrating AI into its existing operations is Meta Platforms (META -0.26%). The Facebook parent has already developed LLaMA 2 (Large Language Model Meta AI), a foundational large language model necessary to underpin generative AI.

Meta made the controversial decision to open source this model, which it believes will stoke innovation, more rapidly advancing its AI expertise. Image source: Getty Images.A precarious balanceThe Federal Reserve Bank is meeting this week to decide the fate of short-term interest rates, and Wall Street has been concerned that additional rate hikes could stifle further market gains. Furthermore, the yield on 10-year Treasury notes currently sits above 4%, which could entice some investors to pull money from the market in favor of a relatively risk-free return guaranteed by the U.S. government, further reducing demand for stocks. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives believes this \"will-they-or-won't-they\" debate about the Fed is causing investors to miss the forest for the trees, which should instead be focusing on what's ahead for 2024.AI is driving this trainWhile AI has drummed up plenty of attention this year, it's still in the early stages of adoption. Furthermore, as one of the largest cloud infrastructure providers, Microsoft is well-positioned to upsell these AI tools to its enterprise users.Three stocks for the next wave of adoptionWith the first wave well underway, investors should be focused on what's to come. Ives contends that while Nvidia and Microsoft still represent compelling opportunities, they represent the first wave of AI adoption, but there's still a vast opportunity ahead. In a recent industry note, he writes: Today, it's Nvidia on the front line supplying the graphics processing units/chips, but ultimately the most important takeaway is transformational AI growth is now coming to software, chips, [and] digital media over the coming years, with $1 trillion of spending in clear sights for the tech sector. He believes the biggest opportunities, representing \"the second/third/fourth derivatives of AI spend\" will begin to manifest early next year, and the \"impact of the AI cycle on consumer internet will be massive.\"Ives believes the most obvious beneficiaries will be the cloud infrastructure providers, including Amazon (AMZN 0.30%) Web Services and Alphabet's (GOOGL -0.35%) (GOOG -0.40%) Google Cloud. These companies are in the process of acquiring chips with the computational horsepower necessary to power these advanced systems, building out their AI capabilities, and ultimately selling these services to their cloud customers. Furthermore, AI-powered services will be integrated into Amazon's digital retail and Google's search, offering additional ways to profit.Another company poised to benefit by integrating AI into its existing operations is Meta Platforms (META -0.26%). The Facebook parent has already developed LLaMA 2 (Large Language Model Meta AI), a foundational large language model necessary to underpin generative AI.Meta made the controversial decision to open source this model, which it believes will stoke innovation, more rapidly advancing its AI expertise. The company has already debuted the AI-enhanced advertising tool Advantage+, which improves the efficiency and effectiveness of advertising campaigns.Since Meta makes nearly all its revenue from the digital advertising that appears on its social media sites, the company is already set to reap the rewards of its investment. A long-term viewOne of the more interesting takeaways from Ives' missive is he's clearly advocating a longer-term view. He said: \"Will Microsoft, Google, [and] Amazon (AWS) ... see the growth this quarter like Nvidia? NO ... but it's the rocket ship-like trajectory of AI-driven growth that will hit the shores of the tech industry over the next 12-18 months that speaks to our unabated bullishness for tech stocks.\"If Ives is right -- and I, for one, am totally on board with the long-term thesis -- each of these companies is well-positioned to ride the AI wave for years to come. The disruption caused by AI could truly be a game changer, unleashing a surge in both revenue and profits for the companies able to harness this groundbreaking technology.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":360,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":218246714892480,"gmtCreate":1694317808894,"gmtModify":1694317813266,"author":{"id":"3583884337664128","authorId":"3583884337664128","name":"Dragonize","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b292e50e34fd86a7f8bc244692dcb651","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3583884337664128","authorIdStr":"3583884337664128"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"C3.ai is flying ","listText":"C3.ai is flying ","text":"C3.ai is flying","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/218246714892480","repostId":"2366330383","repostType":2,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":232,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":218246377836760,"gmtCreate":1694317727842,"gmtModify":1694317732402,"author":{"id":"3583884337664128","authorId":"3583884337664128","name":"Dragonize","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b292e50e34fd86a7f8bc244692dcb651","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3583884337664128","authorIdStr":"3583884337664128"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great stock to buy C3.ai","listText":"Great stock to buy C3.ai","text":"Great stock to buy C3.ai","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/218246377836760","repostId":"2366330383","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2366330383","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1694413800,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2366330383?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-09-11 14:30","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Is C3.ai Ready for Lift-Off? As far as companies viewed as battlegrounds in the artificial intelligence discussion, AI stock certainly makes the list (and for more reasons than just its ticker).

Accordingly, with so much attention being paid to this artificial intelligence and automation play, let’s dive into what investors may want to keep in mind as potential catalysts or headwinds on the horizon. Here are a few things I’m keeping an eye on right now investors may want to watch.

Recent Earnings Report

C3 AI CEO Thomas M. Siebel expressed the growing global interest in enterprise AI adoption and strong traction with C3 Generative AI.

C3.ai’s Q1 earnings exceeded expectations, but revenue fell short of Wall Street estimates, and the revenue outlook for AI stock was also lower than expected.

In the July quarter, the company reported an adjusted loss of 9 cents per share compared to a 12-cent loss the previous year, with revenue increasing by 11% to $72.36 million.

C3.ai’s Q1 results beat estimates with a loss of 9 cents per share and $72.36 million in revenue.

However, its Q2 outlook fell short of expectations, leading AI stock to drop 4.2% to $30.15 in after-hours trading. Analysts had predicted a 17-cent loss and $73.8 million in revenue, while the company’s guidance is for a 12-cent loss and revenue of $72-76.5 million.

I’m going to be keeping a close eye on how guidance improves (or not) in upcoming earnings reports.

C3.ai Fundamentals

As an AI industry pioneer, the firm, though recent losses, anticipates profitability by 2025. With management holding 26%, alignment with investors is clear.

The stock is rebounding from a deep 2021-2022 bear market, bottoming at $10/share in December 2022 and now trading at $31/share in a volatile 2023. Bulls hope for an earnings-driven breakout, while bears expect a gap down and decline.

During earnings season, what matters most to me is how the market and a company respond to the news. Remember, limit losses and don’t go against market trends.

C3.ai’s stock surged in 2023 due to excitement around OpenAI and generative AI. The company expects revenue to grow as AI pilot projects expand, making it a notable AI stock with a strong Relative Strength Rating of 97.

C3.ai went public in December 2020, raising $651 million. The company specializes in AI applications for industries like energy, finance, and defense. It recently shifted its pricing model from subscription to consumption-based.

This could lead to significant growth over the long-term, but also comes with some risks. Investors will need to watch how this shift affects the company’s fundamentals and growth prospects moving forward.

What Now

C3.ai is undeniably pricey given its current growth rate, but this is likely to change as growth accelerates.

Analysts project an impressive 51% annual earnings growth for the next five years. With a vast $791 billion market to tap into, C3.ai has the potential to achieve this.

Investors open to a premium valuation for C3.ai’s promising future may see opportunity in its recent dip. As growth speeds up, Wall Street’s confidence is likely to increase, potentially driving long-term gains for this AI stock.

That said, this company’s valuation is a sticking point, making AI stock one I think investors can trade, but may have difficulty owning right now.

","source":"investorplace_stock_picks","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Is C3.ai Ready for Lift-Off? Here are a few things I’m keeping an eye on right now investors may want to watch.Recent Earnings ReportC3 AI CEO Thomas M. Siebel expressed the growing global interest in enterprise AI adoption and strong traction with C3 Generative AI.C3.ai’s Q1 earnings exceeded expectations, but revenue fell short of Wall Street estimates, and the revenue outlook for AI stock was also lower than expected. In the July quarter, the company reported an adjusted loss of 9 cents per share compared to a 12-cent loss the previous year, with revenue increasing by 11% to $72.36 million.C3.ai’s Q1 results beat estimates with a loss of 9 cents per share and $72.36 million in revenue. However, its Q2 outlook fell short of expectations, leading AI stock to drop 4.2% to $30.15 in after-hours trading. Analysts had predicted a 17-cent loss and $73.8 million in revenue, while the company’s guidance is for a 12-cent loss and revenue of $72-76.5 million.I’m going to be keeping a close eye on how guidance improves (or not) in upcoming earnings reports.C3.ai FundamentalsAs an AI industry pioneer, the firm, though recent losses, anticipates profitability by 2025. With management holding 26%, alignment with investors is clear. The stock is rebounding from a deep 2021-2022 bear market, bottoming at $10/share in December 2022 and now trading at $31/share in a volatile 2023. Bulls hope for an earnings-driven breakout, while bears expect a gap down and decline.During earnings season, what matters most to me is how the market and a company respond to the news. Remember, limit losses and don’t go against market trends.C3.ai’s stock surged in 2023 due to excitement around OpenAI and generative AI. The company expects revenue to grow as AI pilot projects expand, making it a notable AI stock with a strong Relative Strength Rating of 97.C3.ai went public in December 2020, raising $651 million. The company specializes in AI applications for industries like energy, finance, and defense. It recently shifted its pricing model from subscription to consumption-based.This could lead to significant growth over the long-term, but also comes with some risks. Investors will need to watch how this shift affects the company’s fundamentals and growth prospects moving forward. What NowC3.ai is undeniably pricey given its current growth rate, but this is likely to change as growth accelerates.Analysts project an impressive 51% annual earnings growth for the next five years. With a vast $791 billion market to tap into, C3.ai has the potential to achieve this.Investors open to a premium valuation for C3.ai’s promising future may see opportunity in its recent dip. As growth speeds up, Wall Street’s confidence is likely to increase, potentially driving long-term gains for this AI stock. That said, this company’s valuation is a sticking point, making AI stock one I think investors can trade, but may have difficulty owning right now.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":278,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":212583591112840,"gmtCreate":1692940130768,"gmtModify":1692940346900,"author":{"id":"3583884337664128","authorId":"3583884337664128","name":"Dragonize","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b292e50e34fd86a7f8bc244692dcb651","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3583884337664128","authorIdStr":"3583884337664128"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$ChargePoint Holdings Inc.(CHPT)$ https://money.cnn.com/quote/forecast/forecast.html?symb=chpt#:~:text=Stock%20Price%20Forecast,the%20last%20price%20of%207.02. make of the meme stock phenomena? I tookone stab at itwith AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc.(NYSE:AMC)a few weeks ago. I’m back for more, after reading two interesting pieces. As Isaac Newton said in 1676, “If I have seen a little further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.” Now I’m no Isaac Newton. For one, I’m far better looking. But like Zeke – a nickname Isaac’s friends probably never used – I too stand on the shoulders of giants. In this case the shoulders of Jason Zweig, a wonderful financial markets writer forThe Wall Street Journal, and John Brooks, author of “Business Adventures”, a book recommended by Bill Gates. I will quote liberally from both in this article, then draw the line for you to AMC.
\n
Investor vs. trader vs. speculator
\n
Jason Zweig graphically distinguished between these three types of stock buyers in hisJune 11, 2021Wall Street Journalcolumn:
\n
\n “\n Whenever you buy any financial asset because you have a hunch or just for kicks, or because somebody famous is hyping the heck out of it, or everybody else seems to be buying it too, you aren’t investing. You’re definitely a trader: someone who has just bought an asset. And you may be a speculator: someone who thinks other people will pay more for it than you did.”“An investor relies on internal sources of return: earnings, income, growth in the value of assets. A speculator counts on external sources of return: primarily whether somebody else will pay more, regardless of fundamental value.”\n
\n
So why has AMC’s stock price been on a tear? I have one informal data source, namely the 300+ comments on my June 4 AMC article. Earnings, income, growth in the value of assetsnevercame up. What did come up was “short squeeze” and stock charts. So I expect Mr. Zweig would describe AMC’s stock as driven by traders and speculators.
\n
Mr. Zweig also made me realize that my AMC article left out an earnings forecast. I gave lots of data on historic trends, which only implied a future direction. I correct that omission here.
\n
A 2022 AMC earnings forecast
\n
I start with the key assumptions:
\n

\n
My time frame for reference is 2017 to 2019. Earlier data is less relevant because AMC made a big acquisition in 2016, and 2020 and 2021 data is even less relevant because of COVID.
\n
The national box officeis the major assumption. My June 4 articleshows that movie attendance has been declining since 2002. What will box office be next year? The steady growth in streaming, both in subscribers and content, certainly is a headwind. And COVID logically should increase the shift from offsite (theater) entertainment to home entertainment, as it has for shopping and working. Holding movie attendance near its ’19 level would be a minor miracle. A 10%, or even a 20%, decline is far more likely. As you can see in the table above, I make 2022 AMC EPS forecasts using all three box office assumptions.
\n
AMC market share.I assume a share increase from AMC’s ’17-’19 level because some competing theaters must have dropped out because of COVID financial pressures.
\n
Admissions gross margin. This is the profit from ticket sales less the cost of licensing movies from their producers. I hold AMC steady with ’17-’19, but I can also imagine that movie producers seek better terms because AMC has to bid against a growing pool of streaming services desperate for content.
\n
Food expenses as a percent of sales.I carry forward the shockingly low number. AMC, and presumably its peers, take their food and beverage costs andmultiply them by 7 in their pricing to us moviegoers.Smuggle in your own Jujifruits and save a bundle. My best financial advice for the year.
\n
Food and beverage sales as a percent of ticket prices.I assume that AMC’s trend of modest increases continues.
\n
Operating expensesare the cost of the theater personnel, utilities, etc. I assume the gradual uptrend in the operating expense ratio continues, for two reasons. One, these operating expenses are largely fixed, and revenues will be under pressure. Second, it seems logical that the current labor shortage will pressure pay levels for low-end theater jobs.
\n
We’re now ready for my earnings and cash flow models:
\n

\n
The ’22 forecasts are set by the assumptions above through the “gross profit” line. My overhead expense forecast assumes that AMC is working hard to limit expenses through its challenging times:
\n
\n
Depreciation/amortizationis a combination of accounting expenses for real estate and acquisitions. Write-downs taken during the pandemic should have reduced these expenses.
\n
Interest expenseshould decline as AMC pays down some debt with the equity it has been raising.
\n
\n
The gravitational pull of earnings
\n
We arrive at the bottom line. The best-case scenario I can see for 2022 EPS is roughly breakeven. More likely is a modest loss. Cash flow should be somewhat worse, because the cash capital spending needed by AMC to keep its theaters attractive to a shrinking audience should exceed its non-cash depreciation/amortization expenses. If capital spending is much lower than I forecast, it is probably because AMC management is conceding that it is in a death spiral and wants to milk what cash it can.
\n
The bottom line - no support for investors.AMC’s book value is negative. It appears incapable of earning any material money post-COVID. Its business is in long-term decline due to technology changes, and its new competitors are monster companies – Netflix, Disney, Comcast, etc. – with huge resources. An investor can only look at AMC’s current $55 stock price and with a shudder say, in the immortal words ofTrading Places, “Sell Mortimer, sell!”
\n
The speculative play - a short squeeze: A historical cautionary tale
\n
Millennials did not invent the short squeeze. It has been around almost as long financial markets have existed. The bookBusiness Adventuresby John Brooks, published way back in 1969, tells a vivid tale of a short squeeze even farther back, in the early 1920s. Literally a century ago. I’m going to quote from the book to suggest how the story ends for speculations with no investor support. So pour yourself some illegal hooch (we’re heading to the Prohibition Era) and read on. This is the story of Clarence Saunders, the founder of Piggly Wiggly Stores, the first supermarket; the Amazon of his day.
\n
Shorts went after Clarence’s stock in 1922, driving it from $50 to below $40. Saunders vowed revenge with a short squeeze. Here are excerpts of Mr. Brooks’ recounting of the story:
\n
\n “\n Saunders…bought 33,000 shares of Piggly Wiggly, mostly from short sellers; within a week he had brought the total to 105,000 – more than half of the 200,000 shares outstanding. The effectiveness of Saunders’ buying campaign was readily apparent; by late January of 1923 it had driven he price up over $60…”\n
\n
The sole short squeezer of yore has been replaced by herds of “apes” today, and the apes have been far better in driving up prices. By the way, believe it or not, a group of apes is apparently called a “shrewdness”. A group of apes is shrewd – interesting.
\n
\n “\n He had made himself a bundle and had demonstrated how a poor Southern boy could teach the city slickers a lesson.”\n
\n
Today we have apes sticking it to hedge funds.
\n
\n “\n One of the great hazards in the Corner was always that even though a player might defeat his opponents, he would discover that he had won a Pyrrhic victory. Once the short sellers had been squeezed dry, the cornerer might find that the reams of stock he had accumulated in the process were a dead weight around his neck; by pushing it all back into the market, he would drive its price down to zero.”\n
\n
Something to think about. What was Saunders to do?
\n
\n “[\n Saunders’] solution was to sell his $55 shares on the installment plan. In his February advertisements, he stipulated that the public could buy shares only by paying $25 down and the balance in three $10 installments.”\n
\n
Pretty clever, no? No:
\n
\n “\n At the end of the third day, the total number of shares subscribed for was still under 25,000, and the sales that were made were canceled. Saunders had to admit that the drive had been a failure.”\n
\n
Uh oh. What now?
\n
\n “On August 22nd, the New York auction firm of Adrian H. Muller & Son…knocked down 1,500 shares of Piggly Wiggly at $1 a share…The following spring Saunders went through formal bankruptcy proceedings.”\n
\n
Ouch.
\n
Buyers beware
\n
As Jason Zweig noted above, speculators depend upon finding a buyer at a higher price. Today’s holders of AMC stock certainly have made life painful for many short sellers. I will quote liberally from both in this article, then draw the line for you to AMC.\nInvestor vs. trader vs. speculator\nJason Zweig graphically distinguished between these three types of stock buyers in hisJune 11, 2021Wall Street Journalcolumn:\n\n “\n Whenever you buy any financial asset because you have a hunch or just for kicks, or because somebody famous is hyping the heck out of it, or everybody else seems to be buying it too, you aren’t investing. You’re definitely a trader: someone who has just bought an asset. And you may be a speculator: someone who thinks other people will pay more for it than you did.”“An investor relies on internal sources of return: earnings, income, growth in the value of assets. A speculator counts on external sources of return: primarily whether somebody else will pay more, regardless of fundamental value.”\n\nSo why has AMC’s stock price been on a tear? I have one informal data source, namely the 300+ comments on my June 4 AMC article. Earnings, income, growth in the value of assetsnevercame up. What did come up was “short squeeze” and stock charts. So I expect Mr. Zweig would describe AMC’s stock as driven by traders and speculators.\nMr. Zweig also made me realize that my AMC article left out an earnings forecast. I gave lots of data on historic trends, which only implied a future direction. I correct that omission here.\nA 2022 AMC earnings forecast\nI start with the key assumptions:\n\nMy time frame for reference is 2017 to 2019. Earlier data is less relevant because AMC made a big acquisition in 2016, and 2020 and 2021 data is even less relevant because of COVID.\nThe national box officeis the major assumption. As you can see in the table above, I make 2022 AMC EPS forecasts using all three box office assumptions.\nAMC market share.I assume a share increase from AMC’s ’17-’19 level because some competing theaters must have dropped out because of COVID financial pressures.\nAdmissions gross margin. This is the profit from ticket sales less the cost of licensing movies from their producers. I hold AMC steady with ’17-’19, but I can also imagine that movie producers seek better terms because AMC has to bid against a growing pool of streaming services desperate for content.\nFood expenses as a percent of sales.I carry forward the shockingly low number. AMC, and presumably its peers, take their food and beverage costs andmultiply them by 7 in their pricing to us moviegoers.Smuggle in your own Jujifruits and save a bundle. My best financial advice for the year.\nFood and beverage sales as a percent of ticket prices.I assume that AMC’s trend of modest increases continues.\nOperating expensesare the cost of the theater personnel, utilities, etc. I assume the gradual uptrend in the operating expense ratio continues, for two reasons. One, these operating expenses are largely fixed, and revenues will be under pressure. Second, it seems logical that the current labor shortage will pressure pay levels for low-end theater jobs.\nWe’re now ready for my earnings and cash flow models:\n\nThe ’22 forecasts are set by the assumptions above through the “gross profit” line. My overhead expense forecast assumes that AMC is working hard to limit expenses through its challenging times:\n\nDepreciation/amortizationis a combination of accounting expenses for real estate and acquisitions. Write-downs taken during the pandemic should have reduced these expenses.\nInterest expenseshould decline as AMC pays down some debt with the equity it has been raising.\n\nThe gravitational pull of earnings\nWe arrive at the bottom line. If capital spending is much lower than I forecast, it is probably because AMC management is conceding that it is in a death spiral and wants to milk what cash it can.\nThe bottom line - no support for investors.AMC’s book value is negative. It appears incapable of earning any material money post-COVID. Its business is in long-term decline due to technology changes, and its new competitors are monster companies – Netflix, Disney, Comcast, etc. – with huge resources. An investor can only look at AMC’s current $55 stock price and with a shudder say, in the immortal words ofTrading Places, “Sell Mortimer, sell!”\nThe speculative play - a short squeeze: A historical cautionary tale\nMillennials did not invent the short squeeze. This is the story of Clarence Saunders, the founder of Piggly Wiggly Stores, the first supermarket; the Amazon of his day.\nShorts went after Clarence’s stock in 1922, driving it from $50 to below $40. Saunders vowed revenge with a short squeeze. Here are excerpts of Mr. Brooks’ recounting of the story:\n\n “\n Saunders…bought 33,000 shares of Piggly Wiggly, mostly from short sellers; within a week he had brought the total to 105,000 – more than half of the 200,000 shares outstanding. The effectiveness of Saunders’ buying campaign was readily apparent; by late January of 1923 it had driven he price up over $60…”\n\nThe sole short squeezer of yore has been replaced by herds of “apes” today, and the apes have been far better in driving up prices. By the way, believe it or not, a group of apes is apparently called a “shrewdness”. A group of apes is shrewd – interesting.\n\n “\n He had made himself a bundle and had demonstrated how a poor Southern boy could teach the city slickers a lesson.”\n\nToday we have apes sticking it to hedge funds.\n\n “\n One of the great hazards in the Corner was always that even though a player might defeat his opponents, he would discover that he had won a Pyrrhic victory. Once the short sellers had been squeezed dry, the cornerer might find that the reams of stock he had accumulated in the process were a dead weight around his neck; by pushing it all back into the market, he would drive its price down to zero.”\n\nSomething to think about. What was Saunders to do?\n\n “[\n Saunders’] solution was to sell his $55 shares on the installment plan. In his February advertisements, he stipulated that the public could buy shares only by paying $25 down and the balance in three $10 installments.”\n\nPretty clever, no? No:\n\n “\n At the end of the third day, the total number of shares subscribed for was still under 25,000, and the sales that were made were canceled. Saunders had to admit that the drive had been a failure.”\n\nUh oh. What now?\n\n“On August 22nd, the New York auction firm of Adrian H. Muller & Son…knocked down 1,500 shares of Piggly Wiggly at $1 a share…The following spring Saunders went through formal bankruptcy proceedings.”\n\nOuch.\nBuyers beware\nAs Jason Zweig noted above, speculators depend upon finding a buyer at a higher price. Today’s holders of AMC stock certainly have made life painful for many short sellers. But are there really enough new buyers to take out current shareholders above AMC’s present $28 billion market cap? Especially with the gravity of no earnings constantly weighing on the stock?\nAMC shareholders, don’t win Clarence Saunders’ Pyrrhic victory. Take your $55 a share and run. Fast. Before the other speculating holders do so first.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":115,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":166738790,"gmtCreate":1624024768310,"gmtModify":1703826906844,"author":{"id":"3583884337664128","authorId":"3583884337664128","name":"Dragonize","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b292e50e34fd86a7f8bc244692dcb651","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3583884337664128","authorIdStr":"3583884337664128"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$AMC Entertainment(AMC)$ squeeze coming when hf cannot withstand today.
