So much pressure to conform to the norms of short term profits. Gone are the days of building a trusted brand that fulfils their promises. Investors today only think about making the most money in the short term rather than keeping customers happy for the long run. During 2020, the pandemic supercharged its business, but the company hasn't lost momentum.</p>\n<p>CEO Dan Schulman started the first-quarter earnings call by telling investors, \"We just completed our strongest quarter ever.\" Growth in active accounts and total payment volume (TPV) accelerated to 21% and 50%, respectively. That means inflation could theoretically boost the company's top line -- as consumer prices increase, PayPal's cut would increase, too. But even if that doesn't play out, this fintech stock still looks like a good long-term investment.</p>\n<h3>New products and partnerships</h3>\n<p>During the Q1 earnings call, Schulman provided an update on PayPal's $110 trillion market opportunity. Specifically, he noted that the success of several new products and partnerships was driving the expansion of that figure.</p>\n<p>For instance, PayPal launched QR code payments in May 2020, enabling consumers to make in-store purchases with a smartphone. By the end of the year, over 600,000 merchants accepted PayPal and Venmo QR codes. Schulman noted strong momentum during Q1, with <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> new business adopting the service every 28 seconds. In total, the company says, nearly 1 million merchants now accept PayPal and Venmo QR codes at checkout.</p>\n<p>PayPal also recently partnered with financial service provider <b>Fiserv</b>, expanding its QR code service to Clover point-of-sale (POS) systems. Last year, Fiserv merchants using the Clover POS system facilitated over $135 billion in payments, putting PayPal in front of another big opportunity.</p>\n<p>In the last 12 months, PayPal also launched several other products to drive user engagement. For instance, consumers can now buy and make purchases with cryptocurrency. PayPal also introduced the Venmo credit card&nbsp;and a buy now, pay later (BNPL) option. According to Schulman, the agreement \"will enable hundreds of millions of consumers outside of China to shop across Alibaba sites in China.\" This represents a significant opportunity. Case in point, Alibaba's gross merchandise volume&nbsp;(GMV) was more than double <b>Amazon</b>'s&nbsp;in 2020.</p>\n<p>PayPal has also formed a partnership with fintech company FlutterWave&nbsp;in Africa, increasing merchant access to PayPal consumers. Notably, e-commerce adoption in Africa is far lower&nbsp;than it is in developed countries like the U.S.&nbsp;and China, giving PayPal a chance to take share in that emerging market.</p>\n<h3>The future looks bright</h3>\n<p>PayPal plans to launch its next-generation digital wallet in the third quarter this year. According to Schulman, the app will be an all-in-<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> tool that provides consumers with customized shopping experiences and financial services. Investors should pay attention to this situation, as it could mark an inflection point for the fintech company.</p>\n<p>So what's the takeaway? Unfortunately, that rapid proliferation in money supply has stoked fears about inflation, and the stock market has taken a hit -- especially tech stocks.\nEven so, investors should consider buying PayPal Holdings (NASDAQ:PYPL). Its business model could actually help hedge against inflation, and the company recently reported impressive financial results for the first quarter of 2021. Here's what investors should know.\n\nImage source: Getty Images.\nPayPal's strongest quarter ever\nPayPal provides financial solutions for consumers and merchants, facilitating digital payments both in stores and online. During 2020, the pandemic supercharged its business, but the company hasn't lost momentum.\nCEO Dan Schulman started the first-quarter earnings call by telling investors, \"We just completed our strongest quarter ever.\" Growth in active accounts and total payment volume (TPV) accelerated to 21% and 50%, respectively. That means inflation could theoretically boost the company's top line -- as consumer prices increase, PayPal's cut would increase, too. But even if that doesn't play out, this fintech stock still looks like a good long-term investment.\nNew products and partnerships\nDuring the Q1 earnings call, Schulman provided an update on PayPal's $110 trillion market opportunity. Specifically, he noted that the success of several new products and partnerships was driving the expansion of that figure.\nFor instance, PayPal launched QR code payments in May 2020, enabling consumers to make in-store purchases with a smartphone. By the end of the year, over 600,000 merchants accepted PayPal and Venmo QR codes. Schulman noted strong momentum during Q1, with one new business adopting the service every 28 seconds. In total, the company says, nearly 1 million merchants now accept PayPal and Venmo QR codes at checkout.\nPayPal also recently partnered with financial service provider Fiserv, expanding its QR code service to Clover point-of-sale (POS) systems. Last year, Fiserv merchants using the Clover POS system facilitated over $135 billion in payments, putting PayPal in front of another big opportunity.\nIn the last 12 months, PayPal also launched several other products to drive user engagement. For instance, consumers can now buy and make purchases with cryptocurrency. PayPal also introduced the Venmo credit card and a buy now, pay later (BNPL) option. According to Schulman, the agreement \"will enable hundreds of millions of consumers outside of China to shop across Alibaba sites in China.\" This represents a significant opportunity. Case in point, Alibaba's gross merchandise volume (GMV) was more than double Amazon's in 2020.\nPayPal has also formed a partnership with fintech company FlutterWave in Africa, increasing merchant access to PayPal consumers. Notably, e-commerce adoption in Africa is far lower than it is in developed countries like the U.S. and China, giving PayPal a chance to take share in that emerging market.\nThe future looks bright\nPayPal plans to launch its next-generation digital wallet in the third quarter this year. According to Schulman, the app will be an all-in-one tool that provides consumers with customized shopping experiences and financial services. Investors should pay attention to this situation, as it could mark an inflection point for the fintech company.\nSo what's the takeaway? It’s why we’re introducing new store commerce models and policies.”</p>\n<p>The move is certain to rankle executives at both Apple and Google, which are facing antitrust investigations into their app store practices.</p>\n<p>Apple is awaiting a ruling in an antitrust case brought by Epic Games, in which the “Fortnite” developer accused the iPhone maker of abusing its market power over the App Store by forcing developers to use its own payment system and fork over the associated fees.</p>\n<p>Google, meanwhile, faces a similar lawsuit from Epic and is expected to get slapped with a lawsuit from a collection of state attorneys general for its app store policies.</p>\n<h3><b>Microsoft has been criticizing Apple’s policies</b></h3>\n<p>This isn’t the first time Microsoft has called out its rivals and their app stores. In that instance, Microsoft filed a statement of support for Epic in its fight to prevent Apple withholding iOS support for Epic’s Unreal Engine.</p>\n<p>Epic initially sued Apple and Google after the two companies removed “Fornite” from their respective app stores. Apple and Google argue that Epic implemented an update that added a separate payment system allowing consumers to circumvent Apple or Google’s payment services. That effectively cut out Apple and Google’s 30% app store fees.</p>\n<p>Epic’s fight with Apple wrapped up earlier this month and a ruling is expected before the end of the summer.</p>\n<h3><b>Microsoft could win over developers</b></h3>\n<p>With its decision to allow developers to use their own payment systems, Microsoft is sending a signal to the global developer community that it is willing to play by their rules. That could help the company as it seeks to build out its app store and drive more business for Windows.</p>\n<p>While Microsoft was caught flat-footed in the smartphone wars, its moves with the Windows 11 Microsoft Store could give it the kind of boost from developers that it needs to begin taking market share from Apple and Google in the fight for app store supremacy. Social gaming experiences are inherently more valuable with more players.\nWhile some VR multiplayer games are cross-platform (i.e., an Oculus player can game with a PS VR player), Facebook will likely tighten up its exclusive content offerings to attract and retain players. As long as the company rolls out ad content in a way that feels relatively organic to Oculus players, Facebook is set up for success in rapidly gaining market share in VR gaming.\nWhat to watch for\nWhile Facebook's VR gaming revenue isn't reported explicitly (yet), the company's \"other revenue\" business segment is primarily Oculus. In Facebook's first-quarter 2021 earnings report, this segment grew 146% year over year to $732 million, implying an impressive growth rate for the company's VR business. But to have those parks getting back to full capacity is a very good thing. People are coming back to theaters. I saw a recent survey from a movie theater chain or Fandango I believe it was. The percentages are really high in terms of people who are going to theaters who want to go back, who are going to go see multiple movies at summer or plan to. That's a really good sign. Marvel's Phase Four is about to kick off in the theaters. We got a couple of new shows on Disney+ <i>Loki</i> starting up, beginning in June.</p>\n<p>But let's talk about <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> thing. Let's highlight one thing here. The recent earnings report with a little bit disappointing to some investors because of those Disney+ numbers. What were those numbers? They came in at 104 million subscribers, and were expecting 109 million, and so were quibbling at about a five percent difference. When if you look at what's happened in the past year-and-a-half, Disney+ has gone from 0-104 million in about 17 months. That's amazing and I don't want to, I think if you are quibbling over five million, you're missing the point here. They'll outperform <b>Netflix</b> in the quarter in terms of additional subscribers. ESPN+ seems to be growing, which is strange when we think about because that's the one that probably has the least amount of original content. They are doing well, average revenue per user is growing at that at ESPN+ turn, churn at Disney+ is not a problem. They seem to be doing quite well there. I think this company is doing fine. I don't think anyone should worry about this, and future looks good for them.</p>\n<p><b>Brian Withers:</b> That's an exciting update. Toby, I love to see the parks coming back open again. But the market has already priced a lot of this reopening already into the stock. I looked at the stock prices from March of 2020, mid-March when the coronavirus really came in and started to shut things down. Disney [stock] has doubled since then. Do you think we could see Disney shares priced lower a year from now?</p>\n<p><b>Toby Bordelon:</b> It's certainly possible. Like you said, there is a lot of priced in right now. But I think we may be surprised when we get to the end of this year about the rebound surge of the theme parks and the movie theaters. I'm not sure that even with pricing in this reopening trade as it were, that we're really capturing the fullness of what Disney can do.</p>\n<p>Look at those theme parks. We got the Star Wars hotel that's opening up, which is a multi-day experience that you stay in this hotel and you don't leave. The new Avengers Campus at Disneyland, I think that's opening up beginning of June as well. There is a lot going on to both bringing people back and to potentially bring in a new segment of people who might not have been big fans of Disneyland, Disney World parks before with The Avengers and Star Wars stuff. This is a major entertainment juggernaut and that's not going to change anytime soon.
