Great article, but what are the chances of its stock falling to close to zero? What are the factors that caused the huge decrease since its peak?

The comments streamsuggested there are still a few misconceptions about selling puts. This article is aimed at clearing those misconceptions plus putting forward a trade on another tech name we are considering, Palantir Technologies (NYSE:PLTR).

Investors in Palantir have been in a world of pain. Sure, investors in general have been in pain but Palantir's has been "off the charts" as the stock has fallen nearly 80% from its all-time high of around $35 reached in 2021. In spite of that, we don't believe the stock has seen its worst nor has the market bottomed yet. If you are in the same camp, this sample trade shown below may be of interest to you. Once again, the intent is not to focus on this chain in particular but to educate readers on things to be aware of.

PLTR Option Chain (TD Ameritrade)

Palantir - Key data points

Strike Price: $5

Expiration Date: September 16th, 2022

Number of Contracts: 10

Premium: $0.21/share, for a total of $210.

In simple words, the put seller will be collecting $210 to buy 1,000 shares of Palantir at $5 if the stock reaches $5 or below by September 16th, 2022. Time decay is in favor of the option seller.

What's the expected return and possible outcomes?

Return: The premium collected ($210) for setting aside $5,000 represents a return of 4.20% for about three months. Repeating this exercise 4 times a year would represent a compounded return of nearly 18% per year. By a show of hands, let's see how many won't take it, given how things are in the market today? Do we see two hands, or is that just one. Oh never mind, that's someone punching the air in delight.

Outcome #1: If Palantir stays above $5 by the expiration date, we retain just the premium above. We will not be obligated to buy the shares.

Outcome #2: If Palantir goes below $5 by the expiration date, we will be forced to buy 1,000 shares at $5, irrespective of where the stock trades at that time. Keeping the premium netted in mind, the average cost in this case will be $4.79 ($5 minus $0.21).

Outcome #3: As an option seller, one can "buy to close" anytime instead of waiting till the expiration date. For example, let's say a week after selling this put, Palantir's stock moves up to $10 from the current price of $8. In this case, the put seller may "buy to close" the chain to lock in profits and roll the funds onto another chain (or another stock). That may be appealing to those who have the time and patience to play short-dated options many times over. But we typically let the option expire before choosing another chain (or another stock).

Also note that if you start having second thoughts and don't want to own the stock if assigned, you may "buy to close" at a loss too, saving your $5,000 in process but perhaps losing few more dollars than the premium you received. In short, you may choose to close the chain any time before the expiration date.

Why we don't mind owning PLTR stock at $5?

At $5, Palantir will be trading at a forward multiple of 31. Sure, that still sounds too high and EPS estimates (and actuals) are likely to come down. But even after accounting for more downward revisions, the growth rate expected justifies a slight premium for a company still in infancy of its growth stage as a public company (less than two years) but is already showing strong fundamentals as described below.

PLTR EPS (SeekingAlpha.Com)

At a market cap of $10B in this scenario, Palantir may even become an attractive buyout candidate for larger tech companies looking to bolster their data analytics. Google (GOOG) (GOOGL) recently announced a multi-year partnership with Palantir to help in its digital transformations. Imagine that. Google needing help with digital transformations sounds like a fish taking swim lessons at the Y! for additional practice. It also highlights Palantir's potential as a stand-alone company as well as an attractive acquisition target under the right circumstances.

At a market cap of $10B, Palantir's cash on hand (and equivalent) at $2.5 Billion would represent 25% of the company's total worth. The current market has thrown many "rare" situations at us. Palantir's strong cash position, low debt ($267 Million), and beaten down stock qualifies as one such rare situation that investors with appetite for volatility may like.

A few misconceptions and things to be aware of

It is not just about a lower strike price (or any other single factor) but the entire package: strike price, duration, premium and the willingness to own the underlying stock are equally important. We'd argue the last factor is the most important.

Selling puts and writing covered calls are the safest ways to play the Options game. Sure, there are "risks" with any strategy, even with going long as the underlying stock can go to $0. But options allow both beginners and advanced investors to get a position in stocks they like without having to go all in at once.

To reiterate, please be sure to have enough cash set aside to be able to buy the shares in case you get assigned. In this example, the amount to be set aside is $5,000 (10 contracts at 100 shares each at $5) in return for $210 immediately. Never chase higher premiums on a stock that you wouldn't want to own at the strike price.

Conclusion

The 2022 market has proven to us in real time that while market is down, the additional income from selling puts and writing covered calls helps cushion the blow. Generally speaking, down-trending markets are more favorable for writing covered calls than for selling puts but when carefully identified, selling puts can be profitable on specific companies that you believe in. The world needs computers and Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) provides strong processing power to make that happen. The company’s fundamentals are excellent, and it’s relatively cheap. Its reputation has grown to the point that it has staunch fans. I, for one, have recently purchased two computers with AMD internals.

The stock chart is approaching a support zone above $75 per share. There are likely to be bulls lurking there waiting to buy it. This has served as a base since summer of 2020. However, investors should look out for small technical hiccups to close a few gaps below that. Below these levels, AMD would make for an excellent value proposition. The rally back should be violent, because Wall Street habitually overdoes things. The bears cannot help but overstay their welcome into winning trades.

Nvidia (NVDA)

Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) stock is suffering a similar fate to AMD. It is its chief headline rival also providing excellent brains to our highly technical world. Nvidia has earned the reputation of the lead innovator in the field. Their financial results support these claims with absolute certainty. Nvidia management grew its revenues more than five times since 2015. They even boast a $10 billion net income. Last year they generated $9 billion in cash from their operations.

However, the stock is not cheap, especially relative to its competition. With a price-to-sales ratio of 17x, it could lose a bit of froth to bring that more in line. Nevertheless, the stock is also falling into a sharp pivotal zone. The support extends from current price through $138 per share. Those levels have been in contention also since 2020, so they will provide support.

This stock is also in a bearish pattern that may have a few more bucks to go. All it needs is for the indices to stabilize and it will too. There’s no doubt of Nvidia’s excellence, and the buyers will come back to it with force. The rally back should be more violent than the sellers may yet realize.

Intel (INTC)

While Nvidia and AMD hog the headlines, Intel is still the behemoth they are both chasing. Most investors don’t realize that Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) is larger than the other two twice over. It is still a beast, but not as exciting. Eventually they recapture the investor imagination and earn back the respect they lost. Fundamentally this is the cheapest of them all by a mile.

From a charts perspective, INTC stock has had strong support around $40 per share since 2018. Investors who hold the stock have strong hands. They are not likely to capitulate easily. There is technical risk just like the other two, but it’s likely to find support soon. The rally back in this one may not be as ferocious as the other two. This makes it carry a bit less risk over all.

Microsoft (MSFT)

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is an old dog that lived through the dot com bubble. MSFT stock has lost 25% of its value since the high it set last fall. Since it lost the support from early March, it could even overshoot a bit lower from here. But if the indices stabilize, Microsoft has technical reasons to rally back 15% and quickly.

This company proved itself worthy of trust. Microsoft was able to shift a giant ship and steer it straight into winning trends. Under the leadership of Satya Nadella, the company made it look easy too. Wall Street rewarded MSFT for its efforts, as the stock still is miles away from its pandemic lows. While it is not cheap, there isn’t obvious bloat either. Revenues for the trailing 12 months doubled from five years ago. With a net income of $70 billion, investors can sit through a few bumps along the way. If I were long the stock I can confidently wait out these jitters.

Tesla (TSLA)

While you might not see electric vehicle maker Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) as a tech stock, it’s full of technology, so I’m keeping it on this list. Currently its financials are impeccable and twice as efficient with its gross margin compared to Ford (NYSE:F) or General Motors (NYSE:GM).

Tesla stock is a bigger beast than the company itself. Over time it has slayed many shorts. Not yesterday though, as it fell 8% and for no specific reason. However it is still doing relatively better than the indices. At least it has not yet lost its support from Feb. 24. But therein lies some technical risk. If TSLA falls below $697 per share, it could accelerate lower.

I am confident that once it stabilizes Tesla will slay more bears. The rally back will be ferocious, so investors should avoid shorting it. Smart money would look for entries near support spots below. It too will need help from the overall markets.

Shopify (SHOP)

The line between tech and retail companies is paper thin. Therefore, I’m including Shopify (NYSE:SHOP) in my list of tech stocks to buy. If there is a stock that can rally fast, SHOP stock is it. Unfortunately it does so in both directions. Case in point, the company just lost 80% of its value since last November. Luckily it had just rallied over 200% out of the pandemic.

SHOP stock took a long round trip road to $1,760 and closed under $320 on Wednesday. Investors drove it straight into the pandemic base. Once it comes back into style, the buyers will overdo it one more time. It is hard to quantify the size of the rebound, as it is hard to pinpoint the absolute bottom. Therefore, taking small bites is best.

Management grew revenues seven-fold in five years. And they did that without creating excessive valuation. Its humble price-to-sales suggests that owners now have realistic expectations. Moderation is an extremely important virtue when dealing with Shopify stock.

Amazon (AMZN)

If we include SHOP, then Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) also belongs on this list. After all, Amazon essentially owns the cloud, so most tech-related things pass through their servers.

It too has had a bad time on Wall Street of late. Amazon stock is 44% below its all-time highs. It is also approaching a very sharp consolidation zone. Unfortunately it is also wide, so the floor is more of a band of support. Going all-in to catch this falling machete would be reckless.

Its fundamentals are beyond reproach and its financial metrics are strong. Amazon generates $470 billion in revenues and $20 billion in net income. It has 1the means to do whatever it wants to grow the business further. The team is rarely short on imagination and it has earned every benefit of the doubt. This is a tech stock I could own for a lifetime.

","source":"lsy1606302653667","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
7 Tech Stocks Due for a Stunning Short Squeeze
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n7 Tech Stocks Due for a Stunning Short Squeeze\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-05-14 08:39 GMT+8 investorplace\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Each of these tech stocks to buy are approaching critical bounce levels.Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) stock is hot and cheap.Nvidia (NVDA) is the new trend-setter.Intel (INTC) is s dirt cheap tech ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"AMD":"美国超微公司","NVDA":"英伟达","AMZN":"亚马逊","SHOP":"Shopify Inc","MSFT":"微软","TSLA":"特斯拉","INTC":"英特尔"},"source_url":"https://investorplace.com/2022/05/7-tech-stocks-due-for-a-stunning-short-squeeze/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1142625526","content_text":"Each of these tech stocks to buy are approaching critical bounce levels.Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) stock is hot and cheap.Nvidia (NVDA) is the new trend-setter.Intel (INTC) is s dirt cheap tech behemoth.Microsoft (MSFT) represents the most improved old dog on the Street.Tesla (TSLA) continues to lead the electric vehicle space.Shopify (SHOP) is reinventing the world Amazon created.Amazon (AMZN) is a titan that continues to make great moves.Wall Street is a total mess this week, but the list of tech stocks to buy remains quite large. Meta, formerly known as Facebook, even went so far as to change its company name to reflect this new focus. Microsoft will probably keep its name, but it intends to make a sizeable acquisition that it thinks will help build a presence in this network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection.

These two companies built their initial businesses outside the metaverse. To know which one will better serve metaverse stock investors, we need to take a closer look at each and see what they bring to the table.

The case for Meta Platforms

Considering that the company changed its name to reflect the metaverse trend, Meta might appear to be all-in on the metaverse trend. Its focus on that niche and its Oculus Quest 2 VR headsets do demonstrate a commitment that goes far beyond a simple name change.

Meta's social media sites Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram have sought to draw engagement and place strategically targeted ads for an audience of 2.9 billion monthly active users. The software, virtual reality (VR) equipment, and data centers Meta needs to engage with the metaverse, along with its massive user base, create what could be a powerful combination.

However, for all of these significant changes, Meta remains primarily a social media stock. Also, despite its size and resources, it is unclear whether its metaverse applications will match the popularity of its social media sites.

Still, the company is poised to grow in 2022 if recent financials serve as an indication of the future. In the last 12 months, revenue of $112 billion grew 42% compared with the prior 12-month period. Also, trailing-12-month net income of $40 billion surged 59% versus the previous 12-month period as slower growth in expenses more than offset the increase in income taxes.

Additionally, despite a broad sell-off among tech stocks, Meta stock has risen 13% over the last 12 months, and the company's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 22 is far below the only other currently profitable social media stock, Pinterest, at 58 times earnings. Hence, despite a massive size, Meta delivers considerable growth for a low multiple, increasing the likelihood of more rapid gains once tech stocks regain some investor favor.

Why investors should consider Microsoft

Compared to Meta, Microsoft made a considerable but less dramatic commitment to the metaverse. The company used some of its $131 billion in liquidity to make an all-cash purchase offer of about $69 billion for gaming giant Activision Blizzard.

As the maker of the Xbox gaming console, Microsoft has long had a presence in the gaming industry. But given the importance of gaming to the metaverse, purchasing the largest U.S.-based video game company deepens its commitment to gaming.

Microsoft also happens to be the second-largest cloud infrastructure company, according to Kinsta. Its role in the cloud and its worldwide data-center footprint should help it power these newly acquired gaming assets.

Like Meta, its current business remains prosperous. Trailing-12-month revenue of $176 billion grew 20% compared with the same period in the previous 12 months. Also, net income of $68 billion for the last 12 months rose 43% versus the previous 12-month period. A lower operating-expense increase and negligible income tax expenses in the most recent quarter contributed to the faster growth in income compared to revenue.

Additionally, amid a decline in tech stocks, Microsoft stock has risen by 32% over the last year, and at a P/E ratio of 33, it is significantly cheaper than its largest cloud competitor, Amazon, at 56 times earnings. Though not as cheap as Alphabet at a 25 P/E ratio, its valuation is reasonable considering the size of the company's earnings increases.

Meta or Microsoft?

Both companies appear poised for prosperity and should play prominent roles in developing what eventually becomes the metaverse. To know which one will better serve metaverse stock investors, we need to take a closer look at each and see what they bring to the table.Image source: Getty Images. The case for Meta PlatformsConsidering that the company changed its name to reflect the metaverse trend, Meta might appear to be all-in on the metaverse trend. Its focus on that niche and its Oculus Quest 2 VR headsets do demonstrate a commitment that goes far beyond a simple name change.Meta's social media sites Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram have sought to draw engagement and place strategically targeted ads for an audience of 2.9 billion monthly active users. The software, virtual reality (VR) equipment, and data centers Meta needs to engage with the metaverse, along with its massive user base, create what could be a powerful combination. However, for all of these significant changes, Meta remains primarily a social media stock. Also, despite its size and resources, it is unclear whether its metaverse applications will match the popularity of its social media sites.Still, the company is poised to grow in 2022 if recent financials serve as an indication of the future. In the last 12 months, revenue of $112 billion grew 42% compared with the prior 12-month period. Also, trailing-12-month net income of $40 billion surged 59% versus the previous 12-month period as slower growth in expenses more than offset the increase in income taxes.Additionally, despite a broad sell-off among tech stocks, Meta stock has risen 13% over the last 12 months, and the company's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 22 is far below the only other currently profitable social media stock, Pinterest, at 58 times earnings. Hence, despite a massive size, Meta delivers considerable growth for a low multiple, increasing the likelihood of more rapid gains once tech stocks regain some investor favor. Why investors should consider MicrosoftCompared to Meta, Microsoft made a considerable but less dramatic commitment to the metaverse. The company used some of its $131 billion in liquidity to make an all-cash purchase offer of about $69 billion for gaming giant Activision Blizzard. As the maker of the Xbox gaming console, Microsoft has long had a presence in the gaming industry. But given the importance of gaming to the metaverse, purchasing the largest U.S.-based video game company deepens its commitment to gaming.Microsoft also happens to be the second-largest cloud infrastructure company, according to Kinsta. Its role in the cloud and its worldwide data-center footprint should help it power these newly acquired gaming assets.Like Meta, its current business remains prosperous. Trailing-12-month revenue of $176 billion grew 20% compared with the same period in the previous 12 months. Also, net income of $68 billion for the last 12 months rose 43% versus the previous 12-month period. A lower operating-expense increase and negligible income tax expenses in the most recent quarter contributed to the faster growth in income compared to revenue.Additionally, amid a decline in tech stocks, Microsoft stock has risen by 32% over the last year, and at a P/E ratio of 33, it is significantly cheaper than its largest cloud competitor, Amazon, at 56 times earnings. Though not as cheap as Alphabet at a 25 P/E ratio, its valuation is reasonable considering the size of the company's earnings increases.Meta or Microsoft? Both companies appear poised for prosperity and should play prominent roles in developing what eventually becomes the metaverse. Nonetheless, if I were forced to choose between the two stocks, I'd say Meta looks like the better buy. Its platform continues to generate faster revenue and income increases than Microsoft, and investors can buy that growth at a lower multiple. This gives the social media stock a considerable advantage for stockholders regardless of the role each company plays in this emerging virtual world.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":238,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":883313772,"gmtCreate":1631201307896,"gmtModify":1676530496116,"author":{"id":"3584421889632253","authorId":"3584421889632253","name":"MIAOL","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/16e588ffdb3ca4dc9b82fee630705305","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3584421889632253","authorIdStr":"3584421889632253"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Hmm","listText":"Hmm","text":"Hmm","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/883313772","repostId":"2166349857","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2166349857","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Dow Jones publishes the world’s most trusted business news and financial information in a variety of media.","home_visible":0,"media_name":"Dow Jones","id":"106","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/150f88aa4d182df19190059f4a365e99"},"pubTimestamp":1631199360,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2166349857?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-09-09 22:56","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Here's a safer way to invest in bitcoin and blockchain technology","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2166349857","media":"Dow Jones","summary":"Exchange traded funds enable you to tap into the hot asset category while lowering risk.\n\nBitcoin an","content":"
\n Exchange traded funds enable you to tap into the hot asset category while lowering risk.\n
\n
Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies can be among the most volatile securities trading today.
\n
A safer way to invest in cryptos and blockchain-technology companies is through exchange traded funds.
\n
The Amplify Transformational Data Sharing ETF BLOK is, by far, the largest ETF focused on cryptocurrencies and companies that use or develop blockchain technology. It has $1.3 billion in assets and is actively managed. The second-biggest ETF in the space is the Siren Nasdaq NexGen Economy ETF BLCN, which is passively managed -- it follows an index -- and has $291 million in assets. Both ETFs were established on Jan. 17, 2018. There's more about each of them below.
\n
Digital currencies -- risks and rewards
\n
Before digging into the blockchain ETFs, consider the risks of bitcoin and other digital currencies beyond volatility. For example, if you hold bitcoin in a digital wallet, make sure you don't lose your password. One investor lost access to an account with 7,002 bitcoin in 2012, according to Yahoo Finance. That equates to more than $327 million, based on bitcoin's settled price of $46,777 on Sept. 7.
\n
There have also been difficulties for people who wish to trade cryptocurrencies on days of high volatility and reports of hacked accounts and poor customer service at Coinbase Global Inc. $(COIN)$, with customers unable to recover lost bitcoin.
\n
Coinbase has said only 0.01% of its customers have been affected by \"account takeovers,\" and analysts covering Coinbase's stock are believers in the company. Among 24 analysts polled by FactSet, 16 rate the stock a \"buy\" or the equivalent. On Sept. 7, Needham analyst John Todaro initiated his coverage of Coinbase with a \"buy\" rating and wrote that the company \"has done a good job of offering new assets and new products in a regulatory compliant manner, and is well on its way to becoming a one-stop shop for crypto financial services.\"
\n
Blockchain ETFs
\n
Here's how the Amplify Transformational Data Sharing ETF $(BLOK.UK)$ and the Siren Nasdaq NexGen Economy ETF $(BLCN)$ have performed since they were established, against the price of bitcoin itself, in U.S. dollars:
\n
Bitcoin has had the best performance on the chart, rising 322% since Jan. 17, 2018, with BLOK next, returning 159%, followed by BLCN, at 104%. Of course, we cannot predict the direction of bitcoin or other digital currencies, but the chart shows how much more volatile bitcoin has been than these ETFs.
\n
To further illustrate the volatility, check out this chart showing performance of the ETFs' first two years:
\n
Starting from Jan. 17, 2018, bitcoin was down as much as 71% through Dec. 14, 2018. For the complete two-year period, it was down 18%. Meanwhile, BLCN returned a positive 14% and BLOK was up 1%. The ETFs have been less volatile.
\n
Once again, here are total return comparisons for the two ETFs, bitcoin and, for reference, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust $(SPY.AU)$ and the Invesco QQQ Trust $(QQQ)$, which tracks the Nasdaq-100 Index , for various periods:
\n
\n
\n
\n
Fund or index
\n
Total return -- 2021 through Sept. 8
\n
Total return 1 year
\n
Total return -- 2 years
\n
Total return -- 3 years
\n
Total return -- Jan. 17, 2018, through Sept. 8, 2021
\n
\n
\n
Amplify Transformational Data Sharing ETF BLOK
\n
170%
\n
113%
\n
177%
\n
164%
\n
159%
\n
\n
\n
Siren ETF Trust Siren Nasdaq NexGen Economy ETF BLCN
\n
88%
\n
44%
\n
106%
\n
113%
\n
104%
\n
\n
\n
Bitcoin $(CME)$ Continuous
\n
58%
\n
365%
\n
345%
\n
628%
\n
322%
\n
\n
\n
SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust
\n
44%
\n
37%
\n
57%
\n
66%
\n
72%
\n
\n
\n
Invesco QQQ Trust
\n
81%
\n
42%
\n
101%
\n
115%
\n
136%
\n
\n
\n
Source: FactSet
\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n
\n
\n
\n
BLOK is rated four stars (out of five) by Morningstar, while BLCN has a three-star rating. Since it was established, BLOK has more than doubled the return of SPY, and has outperformed QQQ handily.
\n
Going back to the second chart, above, which emphasizes bitcoin's plunge in 2018, you can see that BLCN fared better than BLOK through that decline and for that two-year period.
\n
It may be good to consider how likely you would have been to wait out that difficult period while holding bitcoin. A broader investment in blockchain technology, with exposure to cryptocurrencies, may fit your risk tolerance better, while still giving exposure to this technological phenomenon.
\n
ETF portfolios
\n
During an interview, Amplify CEO Christian Magoon said he had decided to take an active approach with BLOK because of added flexibility.
\n
A passive approach to forming an index of companies exposed to blockchain might make use of algorithms for keyword searches in company filings for \"blockchain\" and related words, as a way to identify companies making use of the technology. But Magoon said BLOK's subadviser, Toroso Investments, will \"take extra steps to verify the actual blockchain-related activities of the companies we invest in.\"
\n
That can be important in a relatively new space with plenty of buzzwords. You might recall the story of Long Island Iced Tea Corp., which said in December 2017 that it would change its focus to investing in blockchain technology, while adopting the name Long Blockchain. That didn't turn out so well.
\n
BLOK typically holds about 45 stocks. (PYPL) and Square Inc. $(SQSP)$ in the portfolio, but both provide services allowing customers to buy and sell bitcoin.
\n
Magoon emphasized that the diversification of BLOK's portfolio lowered risk, but acknowledged that the ETF's performance is still closely correlated with bitcoin.
\n
Early this year, the Securities and Exchange Commission gave permission for BLOK to hold shares of the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), which has a market capitalization of $6.6 billion. It has been a popular way for investors and traders to \"play\" bitcoin indirectly. But it has its own risks, as its share price at times can rise to a very high premium over the trust's net asset value (the value of its investments at the end of the trading day divided by the number of shares). This means GBTC has an extra layer of volatility on top of bitcoin's price.
\n
According to Magoon, GBTC has traded at a premium as high as 70% over NAV, although recently it has traded below the NAV.
\n
This extra volatility led BLOK to completely sell out of its GBTC position, Magoon said. It now holds shares of Canadian exchange traded funds that invest in bitcoin. Magoon says those tend to trade close to NAV. An example of a Canadian bitcoin ETF held by block is the Purpose Bitcoin ETF .
\n
BCLN tends to have more holdings than BLOK -- 69 stocks at the end of the second quarter. It is also less concentrated. BLOK's 10 largest holdings make up 45% of the portfolio. For BLCN, the 10 largest account for 21%.
\n
Here are the 10 largest holdings of BCLN:
\n
\n
\n
\n
Company
\n
Share of portfolio
\n
Market cap ($mil, U.S.)
\n
Total return -- 2021
\n
\n
\n
Huobi Technology Holdings Ltd. It has $1.3 billion in assets and is actively managed. The second-biggest ETF in the space is the Siren Nasdaq NexGen Economy ETF BLCN, which is passively managed -- it follows an index -- and has $291 million in assets.
Coatue also added to its bet on vaccine maker Moderna, while Stephen Mandel’s Lone Pine Capital took a new stake in the biotech company worth more than $900 million. These purchases were a reversal from the first quarter, when many hedge funds cut positions inWork From Homecompanies like Peloton and Zoom as vaccinations began to ramp up in the U.S. That, in turn, fueled wagers on companies that had been hardest-hit by travel restrictions and remote work.
\n
Tiger and Coatue also increased their stakes in Zoom in the three months through June, their 13F filings revealed. The two funds, along with D1 Capital Partners, were among those that added to positions in Peloton, while Viking Global Investors made a new bet on the exercise equipment company.
\n
13F filings also showed that funds including Soros Fund Management and Temasek snapped up shares of fintech companies. Marqeta was a top new buy for Soros, while Temasek disclosed new positions in SoFi Technologies, Flywire and Payoneer Global. Marqeta and SoFi tumbled last week after reporting disappointing second-quarter results. Temasek also snapped up shares in two new BlackRock carbon transition ETFs (LCTU and LCTD), while Soros took a new position in electric-vehicle producer Proterra, as clean energy continues to be a prominent trend among investors.
\n
Coatue, Viking and Gabe Plotkin’s Melvin Capital Management also added new positions in Beijing-based JD.com Inc. in the quarter, a move that would prove to be rather unfortunate as shares of the giant online vendor have slumped 16% since June 30. Chinese shares have tumbled since June as Beijing banned for-profit tutoring companies and ordered more than two dozen tech firms to carry out internal inspections and address issues such as data security.
\n
Some, such as Soros were either lucky or good in cutting their exposure to Chinese ADRs in the second quarter, ahead of the furious selloff. Soros Fund Management exited many of its investments in Chinese ADRs including Baidu, Vipshop Holdings, Tencent Music Entertainment Group and IQiyi, positions it snapped up during the collapse of Archegos Capital Management in March and April, as noted previously.
\n
Other funds also dumped China-based companies with listings in the U.S. D1 Capital sold its 25-million-share stake in New Oriental Education & Technology Group, while Soroban Capital Partners exited its 2.06-million-share stake in Alibaba. Soroban’s largest new positions favored tech, with the top three additions being Facebook, Twitter and Netflix.
\n
Some other notable 13F findings:
\n
\n
Michael Burry, of “The Big Short” fame, owned puts on Cathie Wood’s ARK Innovation ETF and increased its Tesla puts (more here).
\n
Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway added to just three positions in the quarter and trimmed its holdings in several companies, including a full exit of controversial Alzheimer’s drug developer Biogen. As firstnoted earlier, Berkshire’s only new position in the quarter, 1.55 million shares of Organon was the result of a spinoff of the women’s health pharmaceutical company from Berkshire holding Merck. Its most significant addition was a 21% increase in its position in grocer Kroger. Besides Biogen, exits included Liberty Global’s Class A shares and Axalta Coating Systems, while Berkshire trimmed positions in Marsh & McLennan, Abbvie, General Motors and Bristol-Myers Squibb.
\n
Seth Klarman’s long-standing investment in Rupert Murdoch’s media empire finally came to an end during the second quarter. Baupost Group sold its entire Fox Corp. stake, including 7.6 million Class A shares and 5.7 million Class B shares with a combined market value of $446 million at the end of March.
\n
Carl Icahn, who runs a concentrated portfolio with just 17 reportable investments, sold all of his 9.59 million shares of Tenneco in the quarter. He also has a new undisclosed position in an unnamed stock -- an unusual step that requires a separate filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
\n
Dan Loeb's Third Point added SentinelOne Class A to its investments and exited IAA in the second quarter. The fund also added to its holdings in Intel, boosting its stake to 14 million shares from 1 million, while decreasing its stake in Charter Communications Class A. Upstart Holdings was Third Point's biggest holding, representing 9.8% of disclosed assets
\n
Elliott Investment Management’s largest purchases of the quarter included a 3-million-share buy of Twitter. The increase in shares comes despite Elliott partner Jesse Cohn’s departure from Twitter’s board on June 9. He originally joined the board as part of a partnership Twitter entered with Elliott and Sliver Lake on March 9, 2020.
\n
Singapore state-owned investment fund Temasek Holdings’s largest new purchase in the quarter was a 4.84-million-share position in Airbnb. Airbnb reported strong second-quarter earnings last week that were offset by tepid guidance, according to analysts. Temasek also disclosed new positions in SoFi Technologies, Flywire and Payoneer Global.
\n
\n
Here are some other moves made by prominent funds tracked by once, the \"smart money\" was not caught off guard by the resurgent covid pandemic, and as a barrage of 13F filings published today showed, during the second quarter hedge funds loaded up on companies that would benefit from a new wave of the pandemic even before the delta variant began to rapidly spread throughout the U.S.\nAs Bloomberg summarizes, Chase Coleman’s Tiger Global Management and Philippe Laffont’s Coatue Management both increased their stakes in food delivery service DoorDash in the second quarter. That, in turn, fueled wagers on companies that had been hardest-hit by travel restrictions and remote work.\nTiger and Coatue also increased their stakes in Zoom in the three months through June, their 13F filings revealed. The two funds, along with D1 Capital Partners, were among those that added to positions in Peloton, while Viking Global Investors made a new bet on the exercise equipment company.\n13F filings also showed that funds including Soros Fund Management and Temasek snapped up shares of fintech companies. Marqeta was a top new buy for Soros, while Temasek disclosed new positions in SoFi Technologies, Flywire and Payoneer Global. Marqeta and SoFi tumbled last week after reporting disappointing second-quarter results. Temasek also snapped up shares in two new BlackRock carbon transition ETFs (LCTU and LCTD), while Soros took a new position in electric-vehicle producer Proterra, as clean energy continues to be a prominent trend among investors.\nCoatue, Viking and Gabe Plotkin’s Melvin Capital Management also added new positions in Beijing-based JD.com Inc. in the quarter, a move that would prove to be rather unfortunate as shares of the giant online vendor have slumped 16% since June 30. Chinese shares have tumbled since June as Beijing banned for-profit tutoring companies and ordered more than two dozen tech firms to carry out internal inspections and address issues such as data security.\nSome, such as Soros were either lucky or good in cutting their exposure to Chinese ADRs in the second quarter, ahead of the furious selloff. Soros Fund Management exited many of its investments in Chinese ADRs including Baidu, Vipshop Holdings, Tencent Music Entertainment Group and IQiyi, positions it snapped up during the collapse of Archegos Capital Management in March and April, as noted previously.\nOther funds also dumped China-based companies with listings in the U.S. D1 Capital sold its 25-million-share stake in New Oriental Education & Technology Group, while Soroban Capital Partners exited its 2.06-million-share stake in Alibaba. Soroban’s largest new positions favored tech, with the top three additions being Facebook, Twitter and Netflix.\nSome other notable 13F findings:\n\nMichael Burry, of “The Big Short” fame, owned puts on Cathie Wood’s ARK Innovation ETF and increased its Tesla puts (more here).\nWarren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway added to just three positions in the quarter and trimmed its holdings in several companies, including a full exit of controversial Alzheimer’s drug developer Biogen. Besides Biogen, exits included Liberty Global’s Class A shares and Axalta Coating Systems, while Berkshire trimmed positions in Marsh & McLennan, Abbvie, General Motors and Bristol-Myers Squibb.\nSeth Klarman’s long-standing investment in Rupert Murdoch’s media empire finally came to an end during the second quarter. Baupost Group sold its entire Fox Corp. stake, including 7.6 million Class A shares and 5.7 million Class B shares with a combined market value of $446 million at the end of March.\nCarl Icahn, who runs a concentrated portfolio with just 17 reportable investments, sold all of his 9.59 million shares of Tenneco in the quarter. He also has a new undisclosed position in an unnamed stock -- an unusual step that requires a separate filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.\nDan Loeb's Third Point added SentinelOne Class A to its investments and exited IAA in the second quarter. The fund also added to its holdings in Intel, boosting its stake to 14 million shares from 1 million, while decreasing its stake in Charter Communications Class A. Upstart Holdings was Third Point's biggest holding, representing 9.8% of disclosed assets\nElliott Investment Management’s largest purchases of the quarter included a 3-million-share buy of Twitter. The increase in shares comes despite Elliott partner Jesse Cohn’s departure from Twitter’s board on June 9. He originally joined the board as part of a partnership Twitter entered with Elliott and Sliver Lake on March 9, 2020.\nSingapore state-owned investment fund Temasek Holdings’s largest new purchase in the quarter was a 4.84-million-share position in Airbnb. Airbnb reported strong second-quarter earnings last week that were offset by tepid guidance, according to analysts. Temasek also disclosed new positions in SoFi Technologies, Flywire and Payoneer Global.\n\nHere are some other moves made by prominent funds tracked by Bloomberg:\nAPPALOOSA\n\nTop new buys: UBER,
