It seemed as though the company’s turnaround under new CEO Larry <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CFI\">Culp</a>, whose tenure began in 2018, was gaining steam. However, that turnaround seems to have stalled, at least from the perspective of GE shareholders. After closing at $14.17 on March 8, GE stock slipped. It didn’t hit the $14 ceiling for over two months until May 27,when it reached its highest close in three years.</p>\n<p>Has GE’s three-month stall truly come to an end, indicating that this is the time to begin investing in the company again, or is this just a temporary boost in price that won’t last?</p>\n<p>The answer to that question largely depends on the performance of two of the company’s divisions: Aviation and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/REGI\">Renewable</a> Energy. One has been hammered by the pandemic, while the other is gaining steam and has a new zero-emission administration to help it accelerate growth. The $33 range GE stock was selling for just five years ago may not be just around the corner, but these divisions can be a big part of the story in terms of kickstarting long-term GE stock growth.</p>\n<p>Aviation</p>\n<p>Let’s start with what is currently GE’s most valuable, but problematic business unit. Aviation is amulti-faceted business with a 90-year history. It is a huge revenue and profit generator for the company. It primarily involves the development, sale, and servicing of aircraft engines. In 2018, as the company was flailing, it wasdetermined to hold onto its aviation business, seeing it as a key to the future.</p>\n<p>The coronavirus derailed that story, decimating commercial air travel. With their fleets grounded, airlines had little interest in buying new jets equipped with GE engines. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TSS\">Total</a> orders for GE commercial aircraft engines dropped from 2,390 in 2019 to just 678 in 2020. Airlines also had far less need for engine maintenance. 2020 saw GE’s Aviation revenue drop 32% year-over-year, whileprofit for the division slid by 82%.</p>\n<p>Last October, the company announced plans toeliminate 13,000 jobsin the aviation unit in an effort to cut costs. In a March cost-cutting measure, GEsold its jet leasing business in a $30 billion deal.</p>\n<p>With aviation playing such an oversized role, a big part of the GE stock story is hinging on how soon passengers start flying again. GE is expecting to see aviation revenue flat, or possibly slightly up year-over year in 2021. However, even that projection is “dependent on the commercial aviation market recovery accelerating in the second half of 2021.”</p>\n<p>Renewable Energy</p>\n<p>While its aviation business has investors on pins and needles, GE’s renewable energy division is developing into a star performer. Momentum was already building, but the election of Joe Biden as president has been a big boost. Biden’snet zero emission planthat also favors <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AFG\">American</a> solutions has generated a whole lot of additional interest in General Electric’s renewable energy solutions.</p>\n<p>GE’s massive Haliade-X wind turbines have been chosen for the high-profile, 800MW Cape Cod wind project (Vineyard Wind 1). In 2020, with wind power growing in popularity, GEaccounted for over half of U.S. wind turbine orders. In its 2020shareholder’s report, GE reported its Renewable Energy divisions order backlog had reached a record $30 billion (up 9% YoY), while margins were also improving. Revenue for the division last year was $15.7 billion, a 4% organic YoY increase.</p>\n<p>Investment is ratcheting up on renewable energy projects. That is a good sign for GE’s Renewable Energy division, and it’s going to be a big part of the long-term growth story for GE stock.</p>\n<p>Bottom Line on GE Stock</p>\n<p>If you’re willing to accept some risk, an investment in this<i>Portfolio Grader</i>“B” rated stock has a good chance of providing healthy long-term returns. It seemed as though the company’s turnaround under new CEO Larry Culp, whose tenure began in 2018, was gaining steam. However, that turnaround seems to have stalled, at least from the perspective of GE shareholders. After closing at $14.17 on March 8, GE stock slipped. It didn’t hit the $14 ceiling for over two months until May 27,when it reached its highest close in three years.\nHas GE’s three-month stall truly come to an end, indicating that this is the time to begin investing in the company again, or is this just a temporary boost in price that won’t last?\nThe answer to that question largely depends on the performance of two of the company’s divisions: Aviation and Renewable Energy. One has been hammered by the pandemic, while the other is gaining steam and has a new zero-emission administration to help it accelerate growth. The $33 range GE stock was selling for just five years ago may not be just around the corner, but these divisions can be a big part of the story in terms of kickstarting long-term GE stock growth.\nAviation\nLet’s start with what is currently GE’s most valuable, but problematic business unit. Aviation is amulti-faceted business with a 90-year history. It is a huge revenue and profit generator for the company. It primarily involves the development, sale, and servicing of aircraft engines. In 2018, as the company was flailing, it wasdetermined to hold onto its aviation business, seeing it as a key to the future.\nThe coronavirus derailed that story, decimating commercial air travel. With their fleets grounded, airlines had little interest in buying new jets equipped with GE engines. Total orders for GE commercial aircraft engines dropped from 2,390 in 2019 to just 678 in 2020. Airlines also had far less need for engine maintenance. 2020 saw GE’s Aviation revenue drop 32% year-over-year, whileprofit for the division slid by 82%.\nLast October, the company announced plans toeliminate 13,000 jobsin the aviation unit in an effort to cut costs. In a March cost-cutting measure, GEsold its jet leasing business in a $30 billion deal.\nWith aviation playing such an oversized role, a big part of the GE stock story is hinging on how soon passengers start flying again. GE is expecting to see aviation revenue flat, or possibly slightly up year-over year in 2021. However, even that projection is “dependent on the commercial aviation market recovery accelerating in the second half of 2021.”\nRenewable Energy\nWhile its aviation business has investors on pins and needles, GE’s renewable energy division is developing into a star performer. Momentum was already building, but the election of Joe Biden as president has been a big boost. Biden’snet zero emission planthat also favors American solutions has generated a whole lot of additional interest in General Electric’s renewable energy solutions.\nGE’s massive Haliade-X wind turbines have been chosen for the high-profile, 800MW Cape Cod wind project (Vineyard Wind 1). In 2020, with wind power growing in popularity, GEaccounted for over half of U.S. wind turbine orders. In its 2020shareholder’s report, GE reported its Renewable Energy divisions order backlog had reached a record $30 billion (up 9% YoY), while margins were also improving. Revenue for the division last year was $15.7 billion, a 4% organic YoY increase.\nInvestment is ratcheting up on renewable energy projects. They don't compete directly in all areas, but there are enough similarities to make a meaningful pairing.</p><p>Where PayPal and Square fit in</p><p>PayPal Holdings Inc. (PYPL) was spun off from eBay Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EBAY\">$(EBAY)$</a> in July 2015. Square was founded in 2009 by CEO Jack Dorsey and James McKelvey Jr. (a current board member), and went public in November 2015. Dorsey also serves as CEO of <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWTR\">Twitter</a> Inc. (TWTR), which he co-founded in 2006.</p><p>PayPal said in its 2020 10-K filing  with the Securities and Exchange Commission that 13% of its revenue for the year came from customers on eBay's Marketplace platform. It also said that no other revenue source represented more than 10% of the whole.</p><p>PayPal makes it easy to do payments online through its secure digital wallet -- a user simply signs into their PayPal account to make a payment to the merchant from a bank account or credit card. The purchaser doesn't need to provide any financial information to the merchant.</p><p>During 2020, 93% of PayPal's revenue came from transactions, with the rest from \"other value-added services,\" a category that  has declined over the past two full years.</p><p>Square offers what it calls a \"cohesive commerce ecosystem,\" which includes hardware and software, to help merchants process point-of-sale transactions and online transactions. Here's Square's more detailed revenue breakdown:</p><p>This illustrates why an investor considering an individual stock has to take a closer look to form their own opinion.</p><p>Here's what Square had to say about its revenue reporting in its first-quarter shareholder letter :</p><p>We deduct bitcoin revenue because our role is to facilitate customers' access to bitcoin. When customers buy bitcoin through Cash App, we only apply a small margin to the market cost of bitcoin, which tends to be volatile and outside our control. Despite Square's point that it derives a relatively small portion of its profits from bitcoin revenue, the massive amount of revenue from bitcoin transactions, including customers' trades through Cash App, show the potential of this type of customer activity.</p><p>Returns on common equity and invested capital</p><p>These returns can give some insight into how well a management team deploys capital:</p><p>Return on invested capital is earnings divided by combined debt and equity. It is a measure of capital allocation efficiency and can be useful when comparing companies that are similar. In this case, none of these numbers are bad -- both companies are still growing their businesses in a dynamic environment.</p><p>Earnings estimates to 2025</p><p>Here are the actual earnings-per-share results for 2020 with consensus estimates among analysts polled by FactSet going out to 2025:</p><p>Here are estimated annual percentage  increases in EPS based on the above, plus an estimated five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR):</p><p>That five-year CAGR for Square is bumped up by the expected EPS breakout in 2021. But if we run a four-year EPS CAGR from 2021 through 2025, the results are 21% for PayPal and 46% for Square. Both are impressive, but Square comes out on top if analysts' estimates are close to accurate. This helps explain the much higher forward price-to-earnings ratio for Square that you can see further down.</p><p>Cash flow</p><p>In the modern economy, many investors believe free cash flow -- remaining cash flow after planned capital expenditures -- is a critically important measure. One reason for this is that so many <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a>-time non-cash items can affect EPS. Another is that free cash flow can be deployed through business expansion, acquisitions, share buybacks dividends or other actions that will presumably be good for shareholders.</p><p>Square has had negative free cash flow <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FCF\">$(FCF)$</a> for two of the past four quarters, which isn't surprising, as the company emphasizes growing its business. So it may be most useful to look ahead. According to New York University Tandon School of Engineering professor Justin Cappos, opening up the iPhone would imperil every iPhone owner.</p>\n<p>“I think there's a very clear line to draw to say that if you let basically people go and run their own effective app stores,” Cappos told Yahoo Finance, “even if they're installing things like kind of within an app, the potential for malicious code and malicious behavior on the iPhone increases dramatically.”</p>\n<p>Of course, there’s more to Apple’s objection to having third-party app stores on the iPhone than simply protecting consumers. There’s also the 30% fee Apple collects on the sale of many apps and in-app purchases made through the App Store.</p>\n<p>In other words, while Apple is right that it’s protecting consumers, its App Store dominance is not purely altruistic. And Apple’s argument that it’s safeguarding consumer data might not be enough to shield it from antitrust enforcement over an App Store store that House Democrats found enabled the tech giant to “generate supra-normal profits.”</p>\n<h3><b>Cook is right about Apple’s exceptional malware prevention</b></h3>\n<p>In the closely watched suit, Epic claims that Apple abuses its monopoly power over the App Store by forcing developers to use its proprietary payment system and paying Apple a 30% fee on sales of apps and in-app purchases. (Apple charges a 15% commission for developers that make less than $1 million a year.)</p>\n<p>In a coordinated campaign that kicked off last summer, Epic deployed an update for its game “Fortnite” that included the option to pay for in-game currency through Apple’s App Store or Epic’s own payment option, which was, naturally, less expensive.</p>\n<p>Apple responded by taking down “Fortnite” and cutting off Epic from Apple’s developer program. To remedy the situation, Epic filed its antitrust suit against Apple seeking to cut out the 30% fee or allow third-party app stores on the iPhone. Closing arguments in the bench trial were Monday, and Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers is expected to make her decision in the coming weeks.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ba157cafb4d57bb881608f0798e2be66\" tg-width=\"6720\" tg-height=\"4480\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney arrives at the United States District Court on May 20, 2021 in Oakland, California. (Photo by Philip Pacheco/Getty Images)Philip Pacheco via Getty Images</p>\n<p>Epic argues that if third-party app stores existed on the iPhone, developers would be able to lower the prices of their apps since they wouldn’t have to account for the 30% Apple charges.</p>\n<p>But in his testimony, Cook suggested opening up the iPhone would come with grave risks.</p>\n<p>He provided a stark contrast between the amount of malware on Apple’s iOS versus Google’s (GOOG, GOOGL) Android and Microsoft’s (MSFT) Windows, which do allow third-party app stores.</p>\n<p>Cook told the judge that while iOS devices account for 1% to 2% of all malware infections, Android and Windows devices account for 30% to 40%. “If you look at malware on iOS versus Android and Windows, it’s literally an off-the-chart level,” he said.</p>\n<h3><b>Uneven update usage and third-party app stores put users in danger</b></h3>\n<p>Cook’s argument is backed up by Nokia’s 2020 Threat Intelligence Report, which states that 26.64% of all malware infections come from Android devices. That’s down from 47.15% in 2019, which Nokia attributes to better security on Android as well as a new focus by malware creators on Internet of Things (IoT) devices.</p>\n<p>Windows PCs, meanwhile, are responsible for 38.92% of all malware infections. Apple’s iPhone was responsible for just 1.72% of all malware infections — though that’s up from 0.85% in 2019. The remainder of attacks have impacted IoT devices.</p>\n<p>Why the differences between the three operating systems? Cappos says it has to do with a number of factors including the rate at which iOS devices are updated to the latest version of the operating system compared to Android and Windows devices, which are typically behind the curve in using the latest software.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d437c1c25a14c53c46ef3996b287e83e\" tg-width=\"5000\" tg-height=\"3333\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">The iPhone is safer than other devices, because, among other things, it isn't open to third-party app stores. It also doesn’t hurt that Android and Windows are two of the most used operating systems in the world, which makes them especially appealing targets for cybercriminals.</p>\n<p>Both Apple and Google have automated processes that detect malicious software in their stores, but Google has run into trouble by allowing consumers to access third-party app stores. Most security experts will tell you to avoid downloading apps from third-party stores due to the increased risk of malware.</p>\n<p>Windows, meanwhile, allows users to download apps through its own Windows Store, or anywhere on the web, which is especially dangerous for consumers who aren’t savvy enough to know if they’re downloading from a legitimate source, or a front for malware.</p>\n<h3><b>Security might not be enough to protect Apple</b></h3>\n<p>Apple doesn’t break out revenue for its App Store sales, instead lumping it together with its Services segment. Still, that business, which includes Apple TV+, Apple Music+, and iCloud subscriptions, pulled in $53.7 billion in 2020, or roughly 20% of Apple’s $274 billion in total revenue for the year. All of that is to say, Apple’s App Store makes a boatload of money for the company.</p>\n<p>And that, combined with the company’s App Store controls, may mean that even its safety argument will come up empty in court. Syracuse University College of Law professor Shubha Ghosh told Yahoo Finance that for Apple’s gambit to pay off, it would have needed to show that its business practices justified its security concerns. And a 30% fee and security might not go hand in hand in Judge Gonzalez Rogers’ eyes.</p>\n<p>But security might not even be a big concern for the judge, explained Cardozo School of Law professor Sam Weinstein. “Antitrust courts don't care so much about safety — they care about competition. According to New York University Tandon School of Engineering professor Justin Cappos, opening up the iPhone would imperil every iPhone owner.\n“I think there's a very clear line to draw to say that if you let basically people go and run their own effective app stores,” Cappos told Yahoo Finance, “even if they're installing things like kind of within an app, the potential for malicious code and malicious behavior on the iPhone increases dramatically.”\nOf course, there’s more to Apple’s objection to having third-party app stores on the iPhone than simply protecting consumers. There’s also the 30% fee Apple collects on the sale of many apps and in-app purchases made through the App Store.\nIn other words, while Apple is right that it’s protecting consumers, its App Store dominance is not purely altruistic. And Apple’s argument that it’s safeguarding consumer data might not be enough to shield it from antitrust enforcement over an App Store store that House Democrats found enabled the tech giant to “generate supra-normal profits.”\nCook is right about Apple’s exceptional malware prevention\nIn the closely watched suit, Epic claims that Apple abuses its monopoly power over the App Store by forcing developers to use its proprietary payment system and paying Apple a 30% fee on sales of apps and in-app purchases. (Apple charges a 15% commission for developers that make less than $1 million a year.)\nIn a coordinated campaign that kicked off last summer, Epic deployed an update for its game “Fortnite” that included the option to pay for in-game currency through Apple’s App Store or Epic’s own payment option, which was, naturally, less expensive.\nApple responded by taking down “Fortnite” and cutting off Epic from Apple’s developer program. To remedy the situation, Epic filed its antitrust suit against Apple seeking to cut out the 30% fee or allow third-party app stores on the iPhone. That’s down from 47.15% in 2019, which Nokia attributes to better security on Android as well as a new focus by malware creators on Internet of Things (IoT) devices.\nWindows PCs, meanwhile, are responsible for 38.92% of all malware infections. Apple’s iPhone was responsible for just 1.72% of all malware infections — though that’s up from 0.85% in 2019. The remainder of attacks have impacted IoT devices.\nWhy the differences between the three operating systems? Most security experts will tell you to avoid downloading apps from third-party stores due to the increased risk of malware.\nWindows, meanwhile, allows users to download apps through its own Windows Store, or anywhere on the web, which is especially dangerous for consumers who aren’t savvy enough to know if they’re downloading from a legitimate source, or a front for malware.\nSecurity might not be enough to protect Apple\nApple doesn’t break out revenue for its App Store sales, instead lumping it together with its Services segment. Still, that business, which includes Apple TV+, Apple Music+, and iCloud subscriptions, pulled in $53.7 billion in 2020, or roughly 20% of Apple’s $274 billion in total revenue for the year. All of that is to say, Apple’s App Store makes a boatload of money for the company.\nAnd that, combined with the company’s App Store controls, may mean that even its safety argument will come up empty in court. Syracuse University College of Law professor Shubha Ghosh told Yahoo Finance that for Apple’s gambit to pay off, it would have needed to show that its business practices justified its security concerns.
