The stock has underperformed the broad market since then, delivering a 7.72% decline compared to more than 5% growth for the S&amp;P 500 Index (SP500).</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8dde90932010ba6bb7d1e830ad3f358b\" alt=\"Seeking Alpha\" title=\"Seeking Alpha\" tg-width=\"328\" tg-height=\"458\"/><span>Seeking Alpha</span></p><p>The company faces headwinds due to the current harsh macro environment, but I am convinced they are temporary and not secular. In my new article, I analyze recent developments and update my valuation analysis to explain why I am increasing my position in the stock. TSLA stock is attractively valued, and Tesla has the strongest position among all automakers, both legacy (&#34;ICE&#34;) and electric vehicle (&#34;EV&#34;), to weather the current storm in the broad environment.</p><h2>Recent developments</h2><p>Let me start with the latest earnings, released on April 19, 2023. The company delivered a tiny miss in revenue and EPS, and TSLA stock responded with a more than 8% decline after the earnings release. The miss was ridiculously small, so the market overreacted, in my opinion.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7e7851d29c19022e77555664433a7da7\" alt=\"Seeking Alpha\" title=\"Seeking Alpha\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"237\"/><span>Seeking Alpha</span></p><p>Revenue increased 24% YoY and declined about 4% sequentially. Earnings showed a YoY decline sequentially due to weaker gross margin performance as the company addressed decelerating demand growth with discounts. I see discounts as an intelligent move by Tesla management, especially given the company&#39;s strong pricing power thanks to best-in-class profitability metrics.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9610c4627c93f59b3f25f0f881d5ee9a\" alt=\"Seeking Alpha\" title=\"Seeking Alpha\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"255\"/><span>Seeking Alpha</span></p><p>If we dig deeper into pricing power, I would also like to underline that Tesla is the only company with a net cash position, compared to major automakers with the strongest liquidity position.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f47001a37129391a05e30d3a4fdac3ba\" alt=\"Seeking Alpha\" title=\"Seeking Alpha\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"283\"/><span>Seeking Alpha</span></p><p>For me, it is apparent that competitors cannot win in the price war initiated by Tesla if they do not want to go bankrupt. Thus, it is highly likely that Tesla will increase market share during this macro turmoil at competitors&#39; expense. If we consider the EV business nature, increasing sales and market share for Tesla is the most important, in my opinion. First, the company is aggressively ramping up production with long-term investments in CAPEX, so it is a long play to where the market leader will take it all. Second, the nature of EVs gives the company cross-selling opportunities like new software or superchargers. It is not just about getting profit from selling a durable product to customers. Still, it is about creating a base to unlock additional sustainable and forecastable sources of income apart from automotive sales. Thus, I am very positive about Tesla&#39;s management decision to sacrifice margins over the short term to sustain more earnings potential over the long term.</p><p>There are signs that discounts are working well. For example, Model Y became Europe&#39;s best-selling car in Q1 2023, according to Fleetnews. Model Y is also number one this year in Germany, looking at April&#39;s normalized trailing quarter. Model 3 is very close to the top-3 in Germany, by the way.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/889b9a0cda336393da18c893d35384a6\" alt=\"Cleantechnica.com\" title=\"Cleantechnica.com\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"466\"/><span>Cleantechnica.com</span></p><p>We also have fresh April sales data from Australia, the world&#39;s 13th-largest economy by GDP. Tesla continues to dominate the Australian EV market, selling more cars in the first 4 months of 2023 than during the whole of 2021.</p><p>For the full 2023, Elon Musk reiterated the target to deliver 1.8 vehicles, with a best-case scenario of 2 million, which represents almost 40% growth compared to 2022. Other important information from the Q1 earnings call regarding the automotive segment included plans to conduct a delivery event for Cybertruck during Q3 2023. According to Gary Black, Cybertruck can help Tesla to overperform in terms of base case deliveries goal to achieve total of 1.9 million vehicle deliveries in 2023. That can be the case, especially given an amazingly large backlog for the Cybertruck.</p><p>Other segments demonstrated impressive growth YoY, though Energy and Services segment sales represented less than 15% of total quarterly sales.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/57b3cb852f00c498f6aed9a5a5d23a3a\" alt=\"Tesla&#39;s latest earnings presentation\" title=\"Tesla&#39;s latest earnings presentation\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"77\"/><span>Tesla&#39;s latest earnings presentation</span></p><p>What I would like to underline is that Energy Generation and Storage segment sales increased 148% YoY, reflecting stronger Powerwall and Megapack deployments. During the earnings call, management said that demand outweighs production capacity. According to Elon Musk, Tesla is now boosting production at a dedicated Megapack factory to help meet the increased demand.</p><p>What also has improved my optimism in recent developments is the release regarding the new Twitter CEO. It means that Elon Musk will step down as Twitter&#39;s boss and will now have more capacity to involve himself in Tesla&#39;s business. For me, as an investor, it is a positive sign.</p><p>Yesterday, on May 16, Tesla conducted its annual general meeting with shareholders, where Elon Musk shared the future prospects of the company. For me, the most important was the piece of information regarding the Full-Self Driving [FSD] developments. According to the CEO, the software is &#34;getting close to where it&#39;s safer than human driving&#34; and reiterated his expectations that the system should be ready during 2023.</p><p>Overall, I am quite positive about recent developments for Tesla, especially the way the company addresses current headwinds without sacrificing long-term goals and strategy</p><h2>Valuation update</h2><p>A lot has happened since my previous valuation analysis was conducted. Therefore I need to update it with more reasonable assumptions. First, for WACC, this time, I use 11%, which is the highest point of the range provided by valueinvesting.io. Second, given the challenging environment and Tesla&#39;s discounts to address slowing demand, I revise free cash flow (&#34;FCF&#34;) estimates to be more conservative. For FCF margin, I use 3.25%, which is FY 2022 levered FCF less stock-based compensation (&#34;SBC&#34;). And I also use revised consensus revenue estimates which project a 21% CAGR over the next decade, one percentage point lower than earlier. I expect the FCF margin to expand one percentage point per year between 2023 and 2025 and to accelerate to 150 basis points for the years beyond as the tough macro environment will ease.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/928e944b1457b278bcbeb53b9148e8d2\" alt=\"Author&#39;s calculations\" title=\"Author&#39;s calculations\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"224\"/><span>Author&#39;s calculations</span></p><p>As we can see, after incorporating all assumptions into the model, TSLA stock is massively undervalued, with tremendous upside potential. But I would like to simulate an additional scenario with a less favorable revenue growth rate and other assumptions remaining unchanged. There are different forecasts on the overall EV market growth rate till 2030, but I prefer to use a more conservative 17.3% CAGR provided by vantagemarketresearch.com and round it down to 16% to be on the safer side.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/887f69fa38f250720d2e2fd5248ea455\" alt=\"Author&#39;s calculations\" title=\"Author&#39;s calculations\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"235\"/><span>Author&#39;s calculations</span></p><p>As you can see, even under a much more pessimistic revenue growth trajectory, the stock has substantial upside potential. If you would like to know the &#34;break-even&#34; growth rate where NPV becomes close to zero, it would be 13.1% CAGR, according to my valuation model.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3a7e93f50e310a82337c9b1ab4b0738c\" alt=\"Author&#39;s calculation\" title=\"Author&#39;s calculation\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"237\"/><span>Author&#39;s calculation</span></p><p>I am highly convinced that 13.1% CAGR is doable for Tesla, given the secular global shift to EV, where the company is a leader with a strong brand and customer loyalty. Thus, I believe that the margin of safety is vast here.</p><p>Also, if we look from a valuation ratios standpoint, we can see that current multiples are much lower than 5-year averages, which for me, also suggests undervaluation.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4ea653926e99114a47f543740e7bd721\" alt=\"Seeking Alpha\" title=\"Seeking Alpha\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"499\"/><span>Seeking Alpha</span></p><h2>Risks update</h2><p>As we have seen, Tesla has vast pricing power to address weakening demand due to challenges in the macroenvironment, including probable recession for most of the developed economies, which are the most aggressive EV adopters. But there is rather high uncertainty in terms of the extent and severity of the recession. I am confident that Tesla will weather the storm, but broader conditions will affect its revenue growth and margins expansion pace. These metrics, in turn, will directly affect valuations, meaning that the tougher the recession will be, the longer it will take Tesla to achieve its long-term goals.</p><p>The possible global credit crunch also poses additional risks for Tesla. With fewer credits and loans available for vehicle buyers demand will continue to soften. A vehicle is a durable good that is usually financed by either loan or lease. With higher base rates from central banks, all financial services become much more expensive for consumers, including loans/leases and insurance as well. The chronological length of the credit crunch together with the probable recession should significantly affect Tesla&#39;s growth prospects.</p><h2>Bottom line</h2><p>Overall, I reiterate my strong buy thesis for Tesla, Inc. stock. The company apparently faces multiple headwinds in the current broad reality, but Tesla has everything to weather the storm, including unmatched pricing power together with the solid balance sheet. My valuation analysis suggests TSLA stock has massive upside potential and it is the reason I am adding Tesla to my portfolio at current levels. I see discounts as an intelligent move by Tesla management, especially given the company's strong pricing power thanks to best-in-class profitability metrics.Seeking AlphaIf we dig deeper into pricing power, I would also like to underline that Tesla is the only company with a net cash position, compared to major automakers with the strongest liquidity position.Seeking AlphaFor me, it is apparent that competitors cannot win in the price war initiated by Tesla if they do not want to go bankrupt. Thus, it is highly likely that Tesla will increase market share during this macro turmoil at competitors' expense. If we consider the EV business nature, increasing sales and market share for Tesla is the most important, in my opinion. First, the company is aggressively ramping up production with long-term investments in CAPEX, so it is a long play to where the market leader will take it all. Second, the nature of EVs gives the company cross-selling opportunities like new software or superchargers. It is not just about getting profit from selling a durable product to customers. Still, it is about creating a base to unlock additional sustainable and forecastable sources of income apart from automotive sales. Thus, I am very positive about Tesla's management decision to sacrifice margins over the short term to sustain more earnings potential over the long term.There are signs that discounts are working well. For example, Model Y became Europe's best-selling car in Q1 2023, according to Fleetnews. Model Y is also number one this year in Germany, looking at April's normalized trailing quarter. Model 3 is very close to the top-3 in Germany, by the way.Cleantechnica.comWe also have fresh April sales data from Australia, the world's 13th-largest economy by GDP. Tesla continues to dominate the Australian EV market, selling more cars in the first 4 months of 2023 than during the whole of 2021.For the full 2023, Elon Musk reiterated the target to deliver 1.8 vehicles, with a best-case scenario of 2 million, which represents almost 40% growth compared to 2022. Other important information from the Q1 earnings call regarding the automotive segment included plans to conduct a delivery event for Cybertruck during Q3 2023. According to Gary Black, Cybertruck can help Tesla to overperform in terms of base case deliveries goal to achieve total of 1.9 million vehicle deliveries in 2023. That can be the case, especially given an amazingly large backlog for the Cybertruck.Other segments demonstrated impressive growth YoY, though Energy and Services segment sales represented less than 15% of total quarterly sales.Tesla's latest earnings presentationWhat I would like to underline is that Energy Generation and Storage segment sales increased 148% YoY, reflecting stronger Powerwall and Megapack deployments. During the earnings call, management said that demand outweighs production capacity. According to Elon Musk, Tesla is now boosting production at a dedicated Megapack factory to help meet the increased demand.What also has improved my optimism in recent developments is the release regarding the new Twitter CEO. It means that Elon Musk will step down as Twitter's boss and will now have more capacity to involve himself in Tesla's business. For me, as an investor, it is a positive sign.Yesterday, on May 16, Tesla conducted its annual general meeting with shareholders, where Elon Musk shared the future prospects of the company. For me, the most important was the piece of information regarding the Full-Self Driving [FSD] developments. According to the CEO, the software is \"getting close to where it's safer than human driving\" and reiterated his expectations that the system should be ready during 2023.Overall, I am quite positive about recent developments for Tesla, especially the way the company addresses current headwinds without sacrificing long-term goals and strategyValuation updateA lot has happened since my previous valuation analysis was conducted. Therefore I need to update it with more reasonable assumptions. First, for WACC, this time, I use 11%, which is the highest point of the range provided by valueinvesting.io. Second, given the challenging environment and Tesla's discounts to address slowing demand, I revise free cash flow (\"FCF\") estimates to be more conservative. For FCF margin, I use 3.25%, which is FY 2022 levered FCF less stock-based compensation (\"SBC\"). And I also use revised consensus revenue estimates which project a 21% CAGR over the next decade, one percentage point lower than earlier. I expect the FCF margin to expand one percentage point per year between 2023 and 2025 and to accelerate to 150 basis points for the years beyond as the tough macro environment will ease.Author's calculationsAs we can see, after incorporating all assumptions into the model, TSLA stock is massively undervalued, with tremendous upside potential. But I would like to simulate an additional scenario with a less favorable revenue growth rate and other assumptions remaining unchanged. There are different forecasts on the overall EV market growth rate till 2030, but I prefer to use a more conservative 17.3% CAGR provided by vantagemarketresearch.com and round it down to 16% to be on the safer side.Author's calculationsAs you can see, even under a much more pessimistic revenue growth trajectory, the stock has substantial upside potential. If you would like to know the \"break-even\" growth rate where NPV becomes close to zero, it would be 13.1% CAGR, according to my valuation model.Author's calculationI am highly convinced that 13.1% CAGR is doable for Tesla, given the secular global shift to EV, where the company is a leader with a strong brand and customer loyalty. Thus, I believe that the margin of safety is vast here.Also, if we look from a valuation ratios standpoint, we can see that current multiples are much lower than 5-year averages, which for me, also suggests undervaluation.Seeking AlphaRisks updateAs we have seen, Tesla has vast pricing power to address weakening demand due to challenges in the macroenvironment, including probable recession for most of the developed economies, which are the most aggressive EV adopters. But there is rather high uncertainty in terms of the extent and severity of the recession. I am confident that Tesla will weather the storm, but broader conditions will affect its revenue growth and margins expansion pace. These metrics, in turn, will directly affect valuations, meaning that the tougher the recession will be, the longer it will take Tesla to achieve its long-term goals.The possible global credit crunch also poses additional risks for Tesla. With fewer credits and loans available for vehicle buyers demand will continue to soften. A vehicle is a durable good that is usually financed by either loan or lease. With higher base rates from central banks, all financial services become much more expensive for consumers, including loans/leases and insurance as well. The chronological length of the credit crunch together with the probable recession should significantly affect Tesla's growth prospects.Bottom lineOverall, I reiterate my strong buy thesis for Tesla, Inc. stock. The company apparently faces multiple headwinds in the current broad reality, but Tesla has everything to weather the storm, including unmatched pricing power together with the solid balance sheet. My valuation analysis suggests TSLA stock has massive upside potential and it is the reason I am adding Tesla to my portfolio at current levels. Keeping in mind that roughly 750,000 EV deliveries was the expectation at the beginning of 2021, Tesla managed to deliver more than 936,000 EVs by year&#39;s end.  Mind you, this delivery increase takes into account the semiconductor chip shortages and supply chain issues the entire auto industry has been contending with.</p><p>But Tesla isn&#39;t alone in the EV space. There are a bevy of established automakers with deep pockets, plenty of existing infrastructure, and well-known brand names, which&#39;ll give the EV kingpin a run for its money. This is a cyclical industry that&#39;s historically been valued at a mid- to high-single-digit price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio. Thus, Tesla&#39;s triple-digit P/E ratio hasn&#39;t sat well with some fundamental purists.</p><p>What&#39;s more, the company has a long history of overpromising and under-delivering. This isn&#39;t to say that Tesla and CEO Elon Musk don&#39;t deserve credit for a number of innovative EVs and solutions. Rather, it&#39;s to point out that the timeline when products are expected to debut rarely comes to fruition. For instance, the Cybertruck will, at minimum, be delayed by at least two years from its forecast launch date.</p><p>Although Tesla is the first automaker to build itself from the ground up to mass production in more than five decades, it still has a lot to prove.</p><h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BBBY\">Bed Bath &amp; Beyond</a>: Implied downside of 41%</h2><p>Another ultra-popular stock that could be primed for a crash in 2022, according to Wall Street, is home furnishings retailer <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BBBY\"><b>Bed Bath &amp; Beyond</b> </a>. <b>Bank of America</b> Securities analyst Jason Haas has walked down the company&#39;s price target a couple of times, with the latest forecast calling for $9.50 a share. Considering that Bed Bath &amp; Beyond closed above $16 last weekend, we&#39;re talking about an expected drop of 41%.</p><p>Though shares of the company are well off their 52-week high, they&#39;ve effectively quadrupled from their pandemic low. There look to be two reasons for this bounce. To begin with, the company has predominantly remained profitable despite challenges in the brick-and-mortar retail space.</p><p>The other catalyst has been retail investors. Bed Bath &amp; Beyond became part of the meme stock movement in 2021 and was heavily targeted by retail buyers hoping to catch a short squeeze.</p><p>While even I, at times, have been a fan of the company&#39;s turnaround efforts, Haas&#39;s price target does give credence to the numerous challenges Bed Bath &amp; Beyond is facing. In no particular order, the company is dealing with:</p><ul><li>Supply chain concerns caused by the pandemic.</li><li>Historically high inflation that&#39;s pinching already razor-thin margins.</li><li>Increasing competition from online retailers that have lower overhead and an easier pathway to undercut Bed Bath &amp; Beyond on price.</li></ul><p>According to Haas, even with the company adding new fulfillment options, promoting direct-to-consumer sales, focusing on brand loyalty, and selling noncore assets to bolster its balance sheet, there&#39;s still a good chance its sales will lag over the next two years. Based on the comparable sales decline of 7% the company delivered in the November-ended quarter, Haas&#39;s skepticism may well be warranted.</p><h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/F\">Ford Motor Company</a>: Implied downside of 33%</h2><p>Take solace, Tesla investors, because you&#39;re not alone. According to analyst Adam Jonas of <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MSTLW\">Morgan Stanley</a></b>, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/F\"><b>Ford Motor Company</b> </a> could crash to $12 in 2022. This implies it would lose an additional third of its value after shedding over a quarter of its market cap since Jan. 14.</p><p>A recent research note from Jonas laid out the multiple reasons for his bearishness on Ford. This included the expectation for higher input costs, growing competition in the EV space, a cyclical mean reversion for the entire auto industry, and investors having unrealistic expectations for EV scaling, even in a post-pandemic environment.</p><p>Among the points hit by Jonas, supply chain concerns and inflation would appear to be the most troublesome. Ford&#39;s more than a century of brand history, as well as its existing infrastructure, will help it transition to become a key EV player in the U.S. and China over time.</p><p>Additionally, the company&#39;s F-Series truck (specifically the F-150) has been the top-selling truck in the U.S. for 45 straight years, and more importantly the best-selling vehicle, period, in the U.S. for 40 years. This type of dominance and brand loyalty will translate positively as Ford beefs up spending on EVs in preparation for rolling out 30 new EVs globally by 2025.</p><p>The price is also right with Ford. Shares can be purchased for less than nine times forecast earnings for 2022. Tesla will perform an over-the-air software update to address the issue.</p><p>The recall covers some 2021-2022 Model 3, Model S, Model X, and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles that may not comply with a federal motor vehicle safety standard.</p><p>Tesla said it was not aware of any injuries or crashes related to its latest recall. The company said it was prompted by complaints from customers in December over loss of heating performance in extreme cold weather conditions.</p><p>Tesla on Jan. 15 released a software update to address the issue as a precautionary measure. While some believe the company could nearly double in value from the $829 a share it closed at on Jan. 27, Gordon Johnson at GLJ Research foresees Tesla falling more than 90%, based on his price target of $67 for the company.</p><p>To be fair, Tesla has done a lot of things right. CEO Elon Musk built the company from the ground-up to mass production. Tesla is the first automaker in more than five decades to successfully enter the auto market and reach mass production.</p><p>Tesla has also had no issues with consumer demand, as evidenced by its production ramp and deliveries. When 2021 began, Tesla was expected to be in the neighborhood of 750,000 EV deliveries for the year. But when the curtain closed, the world&#39;s most valuable automaker had delivered more than 936,000 EVs.  With the gigafactory in Austin, Texas, set to open soon, Tesla will have plenty of opportunity to increase production to meet growing consumer EV demand.</p><p>But there are plenty of reasons to be skeptical of Tesla and its $833 billion valuation. For example, even though Elon Musk&#39;s innovation has been a driving force behind his company&#39;s success, he&#39;s also been something of a liability. Musk&#39;s social media presence has previously got him in trouble with regulators, and his forecasted timeline for new product rollouts is almost always far too ambitious. Most new vehicles roll off the assembly line later than expected. Additionally, the company&#39;s full self-driving (FSD) software remains something of a work in progress, despite Musk touting FSD&#39;s potential for more than five years.</p><p>Another clear issue is Tesla&#39;s valuation. Auto stocks are traditionally valued at single-digit price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios to reflect their generally high debt levels and the cyclical nature of the auto industry. Tesla has consistently sported a forward-year P/E ratio in the triple digits.</p><p>With other major automakers spending tens of billions of dollars on EV and battery research, it&#39;s likely that Tesla&#39;s competitive edge will shrink over time, as well. While a $67 price target is probably too bearish given Tesla&#39;s current competitive advantages, I do believe downside is warranted.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a38605bee8e62f3e8aa414fa24278e7e\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p><h2>Moderna: Implied decline of 42%</h2><p>A second extremely popular stock <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> Wall Street investment bank believes will plunge in 2022 is biotech stock <b>Moderna</b> (NASDAQ:MRNA). According to analyst Mani Foroohar of SVB Leerink, Moderna is on track to hit $86 this year, which implies downside of 42% in the company&#39;s shares.</p><p>Most people are probably familiar with Moderna given the role it&#39;s played in combatting the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The company&#39;s vaccine, mRNA-1273, produced a 94.1% vaccine efficacy (VE) in U.S. clinical trials, which were reported in November 2020. To date, it&#39;s one of only three vaccines to have generated a VE of 90% or higher. Although VE isn&#39;t the only measure of success for COVID-19 vaccines, it&#39;s the headline figure a lot of people are using when deciding which vaccines or booster shot to receive.</p><p>To add, the mutability of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 is a potential positive for Moderna. While we&#39;d prefer to see COVID-19 go away completely or mutate into less-severe forms, new variants of the disease provide Moderna with recurring revenue opportunities, either with booster shots or variant-specific vaccines.</p><p>However, competition among COVID-19 treatments is only growing. Aside from COVID-19-specific vaccines still in development, competitors are working on influenza/COVID-19 combination vaccines that could prove more appealing. Also, oral treatments are in the works for a handful of companies. This all brings into question how long Moderna can hang onto its share of COVID-19 treatment revenue.</p><p>What&#39;s more, Moderna&#39;s only source of recurring revenue is mRNA-1273. Even with shares of the company retracing 70% from an all-time high, investors are still paying $60 billion for a company that has only one therapy generating sales. In my view, it makes Moderna a risky bet, even after its significant pullback.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b35f28e4268db10d254dbc217fa38cef\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p><h2>Transocean: Implied decline of 69%</h2><p>A third popular stock with the potential to plunge in 2022 is offshore oil-drilling company <b>Transocean</b> (NYSE:RIG). Despite its shares falling 98% since peaking in 2007, one Wall Street investment bank foresees Transocean hitting $1 per share this year, implying further downside of 69% from where it closed on Jan. 27.</p><p>If there is good news for the company, it&#39;s that oil prices are soaring. West Texas Intermediate crude and Brent crude recently surpassed $87/barrel and $90/barrel, respectively. Although deepwater drilling, which is what Transocean specializes in, can be quite costly, the highest price for crude since 2014 offer more than enough incentive for exploration and production (E&amp;P) companies to contract with Transocean at these prices.</p><p>The company&#39;s backlog also appears to suggest that E&amp;P companies are comfortable with crude oil prices for the foreseeable future. Transocean ended 2021 with a $7.1 billion contract backlog, which equates to almost three years&#39; worth of revenue.</p><p>However, the big concern for Transocean is the company&#39;s balance sheet. At the end of September, it had $900 million in cash and cash equivalents and $7.3 billion in total debt. With the Federal Reserve set to begin raising lending rates, highly indebted companies like Transocean are getting put under the microscope by Wall Street.</p><p>Furthermore, Transocean&#39;s deepwater rig utilization rates aren&#39;t that impressive. Despite its shares falling 98% since peaking in 2007, one Wall Street investment bank foresees Transocean hitting $1 per share this year, implying further downside of 69% from where it closed on Jan. 27.If there is good news for the company, it's that oil prices are soaring. West Texas Intermediate crude and Brent crude recently surpassed $87/barrel and $90/barrel, respectively. The stock has underperformed the broad market since then, delivering a 7.72% decline compared to more than 5% growth for the S&amp;P 500 Index (SP500).</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8dde90932010ba6bb7d1e830ad3f358b\" alt=\"Seeking Alpha\" title=\"Seeking Alpha\" tg-width=\"328\" tg-height=\"458\"/><span>Seeking Alpha</span></p><p>The company faces headwinds due to the current harsh macro environment, but I am convinced they are temporary and not secular. In my new article, I analyze recent developments and update my valuation analysis to explain why I am increasing my position in the stock. TSLA stock is attractively valued, and Tesla has the strongest position among all automakers, both legacy (&#34;ICE&#34;) and electric vehicle (&#34;EV&#34;), to weather the current storm in the broad environment.</p><h2>Recent developments</h2><p>Let me start with the latest earnings, released on April 19, 2023. The company delivered a tiny miss in revenue and EPS, and TSLA stock responded with a more than 8% decline after the earnings release. The miss was ridiculously small, so the market overreacted, in my opinion.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7e7851d29c19022e77555664433a7da7\" alt=\"Seeking Alpha\" title=\"Seeking Alpha\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"237\"/><span>Seeking Alpha</span></p><p>Revenue increased 24% YoY and declined about 4% sequentially. Earnings showed a YoY decline sequentially due to weaker gross margin performance as the company addressed decelerating demand growth with discounts. I see discounts as an intelligent move by Tesla management, especially given the company&#39;s strong pricing power thanks to best-in-class profitability metrics.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9610c4627c93f59b3f25f0f881d5ee9a\" alt=\"Seeking Alpha\" title=\"Seeking Alpha\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"255\"/><span>Seeking Alpha</span></p><p>If we dig deeper into pricing power, I would also like to underline that Tesla is the only company with a net cash position, compared to major automakers with the strongest liquidity position.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f47001a37129391a05e30d3a4fdac3ba\" alt=\"Seeking Alpha\" title=\"Seeking Alpha\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"283\"/><span>Seeking Alpha</span></p><p>For me, it is apparent that competitors cannot win in the price war initiated by Tesla if they do not want to go bankrupt. Thus, it is highly likely that Tesla will increase market share during this macro turmoil at competitors&#39; expense. If we consider the EV business nature, increasing sales and market share for Tesla is the most important, in my opinion. First, the company is aggressively ramping up production with long-term investments in CAPEX, so it is a long play to where the market leader will take it all. Second, the nature of EVs gives the company cross-selling opportunities like new software or superchargers. It is not just about getting profit from selling a durable product to customers. Still, it is about creating a base to unlock additional sustainable and forecastable sources of income apart from automotive sales. Thus, I am very positive about Tesla&#39;s management decision to sacrifice margins over the short term to sustain more earnings potential over the long term.</p><p>There are signs that discounts are working well. For example, Model Y became Europe&#39;s best-selling car in Q1 2023, according to Fleetnews. Model Y is also number one this year in Germany, looking at April&#39;s normalized trailing quarter. Model 3 is very close to the top-3 in Germany, by the way.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/889b9a0cda336393da18c893d35384a6\" alt=\"Cleantechnica.com\" title=\"Cleantechnica.com\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"466\"/><span>Cleantechnica.com</span></p><p>We also have fresh April sales data from Australia, the world&#39;s 13th-largest economy by GDP. Tesla continues to dominate the Australian EV market, selling more cars in the first 4 months of 2023 than during the whole of 2021.</p><p>For the full 2023, Elon Musk reiterated the target to deliver 1.8 vehicles, with a best-case scenario of 2 million, which represents almost 40% growth compared to 2022. Other important information from the Q1 earnings call regarding the automotive segment included plans to conduct a delivery event for Cybertruck during Q3 2023. According to Gary Black, Cybertruck can help Tesla to overperform in terms of base case deliveries goal to achieve total of 1.9 million vehicle deliveries in 2023. That can be the case, especially given an amazingly large backlog for the Cybertruck.</p><p>Other segments demonstrated impressive growth YoY, though Energy and Services segment sales represented less than 15% of total quarterly sales.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/57b3cb852f00c498f6aed9a5a5d23a3a\" alt=\"Tesla&#39;s latest earnings presentation\" title=\"Tesla&#39;s latest earnings presentation\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"77\"/><span>Tesla&#39;s latest earnings presentation</span></p><p>What I would like to underline is that Energy Generation and Storage segment sales increased 148% YoY, reflecting stronger Powerwall and Megapack deployments. During the earnings call, management said that demand outweighs production capacity. According to Elon Musk, Tesla is now boosting production at a dedicated Megapack factory to help meet the increased demand.</p><p>What also has improved my optimism in recent developments is the release regarding the new Twitter CEO. It means that Elon Musk will step down as Twitter&#39;s boss and will now have more capacity to involve himself in Tesla&#39;s business. For me, as an investor, it is a positive sign.</p><p>Yesterday, on May 16, Tesla conducted its annual general meeting with shareholders, where Elon Musk shared the future prospects of the company. For me, the most important was the piece of information regarding the Full-Self Driving [FSD] developments. According to the CEO, the software is &#34;getting close to where it&#39;s safer than human driving&#34; and reiterated his expectations that the system should be ready during 2023.</p><p>Overall, I am quite positive about recent developments for Tesla, especially the way the company addresses current headwinds without sacrificing long-term goals and strategy</p><h2>Valuation update</h2><p>A lot has happened since my previous valuation analysis was conducted. Therefore I need to update it with more reasonable assumptions. First, for WACC, this time, I use 11%, which is the highest point of the range provided by valueinvesting.io. Second, given the challenging environment and Tesla&#39;s discounts to address slowing demand, I revise free cash flow (&#34;FCF&#34;) estimates to be more conservative. For FCF margin, I use 3.25%, which is FY 2022 levered FCF less stock-based compensation (&#34;SBC&#34;). And I also use revised consensus revenue estimates which project a 21% CAGR over the next decade, one percentage point lower than earlier. I expect the FCF margin to expand one percentage point per year between 2023 and 2025 and to accelerate to 150 basis points for the years beyond as the tough macro environment will ease.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/928e944b1457b278bcbeb53b9148e8d2\" alt=\"Author&#39;s calculations\" title=\"Author&#39;s calculations\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"224\"/><span>Author&#39;s calculations</span></p><p>As we can see, after incorporating all assumptions into the model, TSLA stock is massively undervalued, with tremendous upside potential. But I would like to simulate an additional scenario with a less favorable revenue growth rate and other assumptions remaining unchanged. Thus, it is highly likely that Tesla will increase market share during this macro turmoil at competitors' expense. If we consider the EV business nature, increasing sales and market share for Tesla is the most important, in my opinion. First, the company is aggressively ramping up production with long-term investments in CAPEX, so it is a long play to where the market leader will take it all. Second, the nature of EVs gives the company cross-selling opportunities like new software or superchargers. It is not just about getting profit from selling a durable product to customers. Still, it is about creating a base to unlock additional sustainable and forecastable sources of income apart from automotive sales. Thus, I am very positive about Tesla's management decision to sacrifice margins over the short term to sustain more earnings potential over the long term.There are signs that discounts are working well.
