What's more, Applied's guidance turned out to be strong as well, fueled by the massive growth in semiconductor investments across the globe as chipmakers are scrambling to meet huge end-market demand.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/36e7c524b510f3ddf875d48fa2f3ac29\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"393\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>It's worth noting that Applied Materials stock is now trading at a cheaper valuation than it was before the quarterly report came out, thanks to the terrific earnings growth. Its price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is just 23, while the forward earnings multiple of 17 indicates that more bottom-line growth is in the cards. These multiples are lower than the <b>S&amp;P 500 Index</b>'s trailing P/E of 31 and forward P/E of 22.</p>\n<p>That means there's a golden opportunity for investors to add a rapidly growing company to their portfolios at an attractive valuation, and they shouldn't miss out. Let's look at some reasons.</p>\n<h2>Applied Materials is now growing at a blistering pace</h2>\n<p>A $1,000 investment in Applied Materials stock a decade ago would be worth almost $12,000 now:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/81e0104d17e81fcbfbe06af299b88f05\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>AMAT data by YCharts.</span></p>\n<p>However, as the chart above shows, the company's top and bottom lines haven't exactly grown at a blistering pace over the past 10 years. Its revenue just about doubled, while earnings growth hasn't been eye-popping either, considering the pace at which the broader market's bottom line has increased. Also, as the chart indicates, most of Applied Materials' gains arrived in the past year and a half, after it became evident that the company's offerings would remain in hot demand amid a global semiconductor shortage that has disrupted several industries.</p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, Applied Materials' revenue and earnings have been growing at a much faster pace when compared to its average annual growth in the past 10 years. The company delivered record quarterly revenue of $6.2 billion in Q3, up 41% year over year. It also clocked a record (adjusted) operating margin of 32.7%, a jump of 6.3 percentage points over the prior year.</p>\n<p>The terrific sales and margin growth led to record adjusted earnings of $1.90 per share, up 79% from the year-ago quarter. The results crushed the expectations of analysts who'd been looking for $1.77 per share in earnings on $5.94 billion in revenue.</p>\n<p>Applied Materials' guidance was the icing on the cake. The company expects, at the midpoint of its guidance range, to earn $1.94 per share this quarter on revenue of $6.33 billion. Wall Street had set the bar lower; analysts were expecting just $1.81 in earnings per share on $6.04 billion in revenue. The midpoint of the guidance indicates that Applied is anticipating 35% year-over-year revenue growth this quarter, while non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings could increase 55%.</p>\n<p>The impressive guidance is a clue that Applied Materials has switched into a higher gear, and it's unlikely to step off the gas given the massive end-market opportunity at hand. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising to see its growth over the next decade significantly outpacing the rate at which it's grown in the past 10 years, helping the stock to fly higher once again.</p>\n<h2>Sustainable growth drivers can help the stock soar</h2>\n<p>Applied Materials supplies chip fabrication equipment, services, and software to semiconductor manufacturers. Its largest source of revenue is the semiconductor systems business, through which Applied develops, manufactures, and sells semiconductor fabrication equipment. This segment produced nearly 72% of the company's total revenue last quarter and recorded 53% year-over-year growth.</p>\n<p>Within the semiconductor systems business, the foundry/logic vertical occupied the largest share with 63% of total revenue, up from 55% in the year-ago quarter. The foundry business is built for long-term growth, as chipmakers across the globe are ramping up capacity. For instance, global semiconductor capital spending stood at an estimated $29.4 billion in 2010, according to <b>Gartner</b>. Last year, that number had ballooned to $106.9 billion.</p>\n<p>Gartner estimates that global semiconductor spending will rise to $141.9 billion this year. Its price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is just 23, while the forward earnings multiple of 17 indicates that more bottom-line growth is in the cards. These multiples are lower than the S&P 500 Index's trailing P/E of 31 and forward P/E of 22.\nThat means there's a golden opportunity for investors to add a rapidly growing company to their portfolios at an attractive valuation, and they shouldn't miss out. Let's look at some reasons.\nApplied Materials is now growing at a blistering pace\nA $1,000 investment in Applied Materials stock a decade ago would be worth almost $12,000 now:\nAMAT data by YCharts.\nHowever, as the chart above shows, the company's top and bottom lines haven't exactly grown at a blistering pace over the past 10 years. Its revenue just about doubled, while earnings growth hasn't been eye-popping either, considering the pace at which the broader market's bottom line has increased. Also, as the chart indicates, most of Applied Materials' gains arrived in the past year and a half, after it became evident that the company's offerings would remain in hot demand amid a global semiconductor shortage that has disrupted several industries.\nNot surprisingly, Applied Materials' revenue and earnings have been growing at a much faster pace when compared to its average annual growth in the past 10 years. The company delivered record quarterly revenue of $6.2 billion in Q3, up 41% year over year. It also clocked a record (adjusted) operating margin of 32.7%, a jump of 6.3 percentage points over the prior year.\nThe terrific sales and margin growth led to record adjusted earnings of $1.90 per share, up 79% from the year-ago quarter. The results crushed the expectations of analysts who'd been looking for $1.77 per share in earnings on $5.94 billion in revenue.\nApplied Materials' guidance was the icing on the cake. The company expects, at the midpoint of its guidance range, to earn $1.94 per share this quarter on revenue of $6.33 billion. Wall Street had set the bar lower; analysts were expecting just $1.81 in earnings per share on $6.04 billion in revenue. The midpoint of the guidance indicates that Applied is anticipating 35% year-over-year revenue growth this quarter, while non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings could increase 55%.\nThe impressive guidance is a clue that Applied Materials has switched into a higher gear, and it's unlikely to step off the gas given the massive end-market opportunity at hand. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising to see its growth over the next decade significantly outpacing the rate at which it's grown in the past 10 years, helping the stock to fly higher once again.\nSustainable growth drivers can help the stock soar\nApplied Materials supplies chip fabrication equipment, services, and software to semiconductor manufacturers. Its largest source of revenue is the semiconductor systems business, through which Applied develops, manufactures, and sells semiconductor fabrication equipment. This segment produced nearly 72% of the company's total revenue last quarter and recorded 53% year-over-year growth.\nWithin the semiconductor systems business, the foundry/logic vertical occupied the largest share with 63% of total revenue, up from 55% in the year-ago quarter. The foundry business is built for long-term growth, as chipmakers across the globe are ramping up capacity. For instance, global semiconductor capital spending stood at an estimated $29.4 billion in 2010, according to Gartner. Last year, that number had ballooned to $106.9 billion.\nGartner estimates that global semiconductor spending will rise to $141.9 billion this year. If you can get in and out at the right time, so be it.</p>\n<p>Thing is, there are plenty of tech names that are more than just flash-in-the-pan prospects, and are better suited for holding periods measured in years rather than weeks.</p>\n<p>Here's a closer look at three such technology companies. Not only will they be just as impressive 10 years from now as they are today, but their stocks should be trading at much higher prices.</p>\n<h2>Microsoft</h2>\n<p>It's tough to imagine a world without <b>Microsoft</b> (NASDAQ:MSFT). Its Windows operating system is installed on three-fourths of the world's desktops and laptops, according to GlobalStats, and its Office productivity software remains the gold standard for the category. <b>Sony</b>'s PlayStation gaming console enjoys more worldwide market share than Microsoft's Xbox, but the Xbox is closing the gap, and is still the most popular game console in the U.S.</p>\n<p>And these are things consumers can readily see. There's a whole different unseen array of Microsoft-made products that are doing similarly well. For instance, Canalys reports Microsoft's cloud computing business accounted for a second-best 19% of the world's first-quarter cloud infrastructure spending, and the company continues to close the gap with market-leader <b>Amazon</b>.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/362a8a5cb8d412d4e3895fa185d236b7\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"484\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>Now take a step back and ask a thoughtful, critical question: Is there any chance the world will have less need for computers, cloud computing, productivity software, or game consoles 10 years from now?</p>\n<p>Any reasonable and realistic answer has to be \"no.\" Indeed, it would be surprising if demand for these products and services wasn't considerably greater a decade from now. Being a market leader in multiple categories, Microsoft can steer the market's ongoing growth in a way that serves itself best. For example, the Windows operating system comes with trial versions of Office software pre-installed.</p>\n<p>Bolstering the bullish argument for long-term ownership of Microsoft is the company's evolving business model. Access to Azure, Office, and even video games can now be utilized on a monthly subscription basis, accessible via the cloud. This shift not only makes the company's products more affordable to begin using but also gives Microsoft a better chance of keeping those customers by making it easy to update and upgrade software.</p>\n<p>Last year, the last time Microsoft disclosed such data, it had already lined up more than $100 billion worth of subscription cloud revenue that had yet to be booked -- a figure that continues to edge upward.</p>\n<h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PANW\">Palo Alto Networks</a></h2>\n<p>Even after several high-profile cybersecurity gaffes embarrassed organizations ranging from <b>Target </b>to <b>Equifax</b> to Yahoo!, some of the world's most important companies are still being hacked. Most recently, Colonial Pipeline agreed to fork over $4.4 million to a computer hacking group known as Darkside to regain control of its 5,500 miles worth of refined oil pipelines.</p>\n<p>These things are preventable. They're just not being prevented, as too many organizations don't utilize all the digital defenses available to them. Perhaps the Colonial Pipeline debacle will encourage procurement of this protection.</p>\n<p>Enter <b>Palo Alto Networks</b> (NYSE:PANW). Simply put, Palo Alto offers software preventing unauthorized access to a company's network, internal apps, and data. It's even got a ransomware protection solution in its lineup that might have been able to save Colonial Pipeline a few million bucks.</p>\n<p>The opportunity is incredible, and should remain so for a while. P&amp;S Intelligence believes the cybersecurity market will grow at an average annual pace of 12.6%, from 2019's $120 billion to $434 billion by 2030. That's a lot, but it's only a fraction of the $10.5 trillion that Cybersecurity Ventures believes cybercrime will cost the world in 2025 alone if enterprises don't step up their digital defense games.</p>\n<p>Palo Alto is doing fine, logging more than seven consecutive years of rising revenue as more and more outfits build their digital moats. Given the outlook, more of the same kind of growth is in the cards for a while.</p>\n<h2>International Business Machines</h2>\n<p>Finally, add <b>International Business Machines</b> (NYSE:IBM) to your list of technology stocks to buy and hold for the next decade.</p>\n<p>Yes, this is the same IBM that failed to respond to the advent of things like cloud computing, mobile devices, and all that goes with both. The company's \"strategic imperatives\" plan unveiled in 2015 was meant to steer the company away from a legacy mainframe business that was already dying and toward more contemporary opportunities like the aforementioned cloud and mobile security. By and large, though, it was too little too late.</p>\n<p>The IBM of today, however, isn't the IBM from even as recently as two years ago. It's ready to compete where it counts.</p>\n<p>Take last month's revelation of new technologies capable of fabricating a 2-nanometer microchip as an example. The microscopic measure is in reference to how small a chip's transistors can be made and still function properly. The smaller, the better, as smaller transistors consume less power, operate faster, and require less space when room is a factor. For perspective, 7-nanometer chips are the best the market has to offer right now.</p>\n<p>It's not just more functional chips IBM is starting to develop, either. Just within the past few weeks, the company has unveiled a way for data centers to more efficiently store and retrieve data, and launched AutoSQL, which is capable of retrieving data eight times faster than previous approaches are. Both technologies have a myriad of potential uses, including in the artificial intelligence arena.</p>\n<p>Read between the lines. Any profitable trade is technically a good trade. If you can get in and out at the right time, so be it.\nThing is, there are plenty of tech names that are more than just flash-in-the-pan prospects, and are better suited for holding periods measured in years rather than weeks.\nHere's a closer look at three such technology companies. Not only will they be just as impressive 10 years from now as they are today, but their stocks should be trading at much higher prices.\nMicrosoft\nIt's tough to imagine a world without Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT). Its Windows operating system is installed on three-fourths of the world's desktops and laptops, according to GlobalStats, and its Office productivity software remains the gold standard for the category. Sony's PlayStation gaming console enjoys more worldwide market share than Microsoft's Xbox, but the Xbox is closing the gap, and is still the most popular game console in the U.S.\nAnd these are things consumers can readily see. There's a whole different unseen array of Microsoft-made products that are doing similarly well. For instance, Canalys reports Microsoft's cloud computing business accounted for a second-best 19% of the world's first-quarter cloud infrastructure spending, and the company continues to close the gap with market-leader Amazon.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nNow take a step back and ask a thoughtful, critical question: Is there any chance the world will have less need for computers, cloud computing, productivity software, or game consoles 10 years from now?\nAny reasonable and realistic answer has to be \"no.\" Indeed, it would be surprising if demand for these products and services wasn't considerably greater a decade from now. Being a market leader in multiple categories, Microsoft can steer the market's ongoing growth in a way that serves itself best. For example, the Windows operating system comes with trial versions of Office software pre-installed.\nBolstering the bullish argument for long-term ownership of Microsoft is the company's evolving business model. Access to Azure, Office, and even video games can now be utilized on a monthly subscription basis, accessible via the cloud. This shift not only makes the company's products more affordable to begin using but also gives Microsoft a better chance of keeping those customers by making it easy to update and upgrade software.\nLast year, the last time Microsoft disclosed such data, it had already lined up more than $100 billion worth of subscription cloud revenue that had yet to be booked -- a figure that continues to edge upward.\nPalo Alto Networks\nEven after several high-profile cybersecurity gaffes embarrassed organizations ranging from Target to Equifax to Yahoo!, some of the world's most important companies are still being hacked. Most recently, Colonial Pipeline agreed to fork over $4.4 million to a computer hacking group known as Darkside to regain control of its 5,500 miles worth of refined oil pipelines.\nThese things are preventable. They're just not being prevented, as too many organizations don't utilize all the digital defenses available to them. Perhaps the Colonial Pipeline debacle will encourage procurement of this protection.\nEnter Palo Alto Networks (NYSE:PANW). Simply put, Palo Alto offers software preventing unauthorized access to a company's network, internal apps, and data. It's even got a ransomware protection solution in its lineup that might have been able to save Colonial Pipeline a few million bucks.\nThe opportunity is incredible, and should remain so for a while. P&S Intelligence believes the cybersecurity market will grow at an average annual pace of 12.6%, from 2019's $120 billion to $434 billion by 2030. That's a lot, but it's only a fraction of the $10.5 trillion that Cybersecurity Ventures believes cybercrime will cost the world in 2025 alone if enterprises don't step up their digital defense games.\nPalo Alto is doing fine, logging more than seven consecutive years of rising revenue as more and more outfits build their digital moats. Given the outlook, more of the same kind of growth is in the cards for a while.\nInternational Business Machines\nFinally, add International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) to your list of technology stocks to buy and hold for the next decade.\nYes, this is the same IBM that failed to respond to the advent of things like cloud computing, mobile devices, and all that goes with both. The company's \"strategic imperatives\" plan unveiled in 2015 was meant to steer the company away from a legacy mainframe business that was already dying and toward more contemporary opportunities like the aforementioned cloud and mobile security. By and large, though, it was too little too late.\nThe IBM of today, however, isn't the IBM from even as recently as two years ago. It's ready to compete where it counts.\nTake last month's revelation of new technologies capable of fabricating a 2-nanometer microchip as an example. The microscopic measure is in reference to how small a chip's transistors can be made and still function properly. The smaller, the better, as smaller transistors consume less power, operate faster, and require less space when room is a factor. For perspective, 7-nanometer chips are the best the market has to offer right now.\nIt's not just more functional chips IBM is starting to develop, either. Just within the past few weeks, the company has unveiled a way for data centers to more efficiently store and retrieve data, and launched AutoSQL, which is capable of retrieving data eight times faster than previous approaches are. Both technologies have a myriad of potential uses, including in the artificial intelligence arena.\nRead between the lines. Big-box retailer Walmart is even neck and neck with e-commerce juggernautAmazonin 2021.\n\nShares of Ford are up nearly 82% this year, while Tesla’s stock has fallen about 15%. Goldman Sachs has rallied about 48% since January, and PayPal is up just 12%. Disney is down 2.7%, less than streaming giant Netflix, which is 8% in the red. Walmart has dipped 1.7% year to date. E-commerce giant Amazon, meanwhile, has fallen 2.15% in 2021.\nThe outperformance of the so-called incumbents comes amid a rotation this year out of growth stocks due to an inflation overhang, and how the Federal Reserve might respond to rising prices. Technology investors worry the central bank could roll back its easy policies and let interest rates rise. This would knock the growth sector, which relies heavily on borrowing money for cheap to fund long-term investments and innovations. Low rates also help make their high valuations more tolerable to investors.\n“As for the rotational part, a lot has to do with the direction of interest rates with up good for value, down good for growth,” Bleakley Advisory Group chief investment officer Peter Boockvar told CNBC.\nInvestors have also been rewarding stocks that benefit from the economic reopening. Investors expect people will buy cars, travel to Disney’s theme parks and start returning to in-person shopping as the Covid-19 vaccine rollout continues.\nBeating disruptors at their own game\nTesla — which popularized electric vehicles — is facing real competition in the space from the incumbents while juggling negative headlines of its own. The company also seems to be losing some of its grip on the hot EV market.\nFord popped 5% on Thursday after reporting that electric vehicle sales rose 184% year-over-year in May to 10,364 vehicles. The automaker said it has been receiving a “massive” number of reservations for its all-electric F-150 Lightning in the past two weeks, totaling over 70,000 trucks.\n“For Ford, they are impressing people with their EV rollout while Tesla backs off from its extreme valuation in the growth to value rotation,” Boockvar added.\nFord also unveiled Thursday a new compact pick up truck called Maverick, which Ford expects to go on sale by the end of the year. The company hopes the addition to its truck lineup will attract more West Coast customers.\nGoldman Sachs benefited from the rotation into value groups, like financials. The bank has gotten a boost from increasing capital markets activity, while PayPal’s market multiple gets questioned, Boockvar said.\nThe streaming wars between Disney and Netflix heated up this year, after Disney+ topped 100 million subscribers just 16 months after it launched. Meanwhile, Netflix saw a dramatic subscriber slowdown in the fiscal second quarter, missing estimates by more than 2 million subscribers.\nNetflix said the slowdown in subscriber numbers could be blamed on the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which forced the company to delay some of its big-name shows and films. In turn, Disney is benefiting this year as its parks reopened following closures during the pandemic.\nLastly, the Walmart and Amazon battle is neck and neck. Both stocks are trading around the flatline for the year after impressive returns in 2020 (Amazon rose 76.3% and Walmart rallied 21.3%). Amazon was a major beneficiary of the pandemic, but Walmart adapted quickly and saw sales surge.\nWalmart reported last month strong grocery sales and e-commerce growth and raised its outlook for the year.\n“The Walmart vs. Amazon story is now an intense competitive battle,” Boockvar said.\nReversal ahead?\nDespite the first half’s underperformance, Wall Street is expecting its disruptor darlings to return to favor in the next year.\nAll of the so-called disruptors have average 12-month price targets well above their incumbent counterparts, according to FactSet.\n\nWall Street expects Ford to drop 7.1% in the next 12 months, while Tesla is forecast to gain 16.8%, according to the average analyst forecast collected by FactSet.\nPiper Sandler said the aforementioned headlines about Tesla losing EV market share is “more nuanced” than many investors appreciate, while keeping its $1,200 per share price target on the stock.\n“We still think investors should use sell-offs to build positions,” Piper Sandler senior research analyst Alexander Potter said.\nGoldman Sachs is estimated to gain a mere 1%, while PayPal is expected to rally 22% in the next year, FactSet data shows.\nLoop Capital Markets told clients despite PayPal’s stellar first quarter earnings and guidance raise, “the path forward seems even brighter,” analyst Kenneth Hill said.\n“We like the cadence of product development in the business and how that is translating to greater engagement and more consistent earnings growth,” he added. Not only will they be just as impressive 10 years from now as they are today, but their stocks should be trading at much higher prices.</p>\n<h2>Microsoft</h2>\n<p>It's tough to imagine a world without <b>Microsoft</b> (NASDAQ:MSFT). Its Windows operating system is installed on three-fourths of the world's desktops and laptops, according to GlobalStats, and its Office productivity software remains the gold standard for the category. <b>Sony</b>'s PlayStation gaming console enjoys more worldwide market share than Microsoft's Xbox, but the Xbox is closing the gap, and is still the most popular game console in the U.S.</p>\n<p>And these are things consumers can readily see. There's a whole different unseen array of Microsoft-made products that are doing similarly well. For instance, Canalys reports Microsoft's cloud computing business accounted for a second-best 19% of the world's first-quarter cloud infrastructure spending, and the company continues to close the gap with market-leader <b>Amazon</b>.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/362a8a5cb8d412d4e3895fa185d236b7\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"484\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>Now take a step back and ask a thoughtful, critical question: Is there any chance the world will have less need for computers, cloud computing, productivity software, or game consoles 10 years from now?</p>\n<p>Any reasonable and realistic answer has to be \"no.\" Indeed, it would be surprising if demand for these products and services wasn't considerably greater a decade from now. Being a market leader in multiple categories, Microsoft can steer the market's ongoing growth in a way that serves itself best. For example, the Windows operating system comes with trial versions of Office software pre-installed.</p>\n<p>Bolstering the bullish argument for long-term ownership of Microsoft is the company's evolving business model. Access to Azure, Office, and even video games can now be utilized on a monthly subscription basis, accessible via the cloud. This shift not only makes the company's products more affordable to begin using but also gives Microsoft a better chance of keeping those customers by making it easy to update and upgrade software.</p>\n<p>Last year, the last time Microsoft disclosed such data, it had already lined up more than $100 billion worth of subscription cloud revenue that had yet to be booked -- a figure that continues to edge upward.</p>\n<h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PANW\">Palo Alto Networks</a></h2>\n<p>Even after several high-profile cybersecurity gaffes embarrassed organizations ranging from <b>Target </b>to <b>Equifax</b> to Yahoo!, some of the world's most important companies are still being hacked. Most recently, Colonial Pipeline agreed to fork over $4.4 million to a computer hacking group known as Darkside to regain control of its 5,500 miles worth of refined oil pipelines.</p>\n<p>These things are preventable. They're just not being prevented, as too many organizations don't utilize all the digital defenses available to them. Perhaps the Colonial Pipeline debacle will encourage procurement of this protection.</p>\n<p>Enter <b>Palo Alto Networks</b> (NYSE:PANW). Simply put, Palo Alto offers software preventing unauthorized access to a company's network, internal apps, and data. It's even got a ransomware protection solution in its lineup that might have been able to save Colonial Pipeline a few million bucks.</p>\n<p>The opportunity is incredible, and should remain so for a while. P&amp;S Intelligence believes the cybersecurity market will grow at an average annual pace of 12.6%, from 2019's $120 billion to $434 billion by 2030. That's a lot, but it's only a fraction of the $10.5 trillion that Cybersecurity Ventures believes cybercrime will cost the world in 2025 alone if enterprises don't step up their digital defense games.</p>\n<p>Palo Alto is doing fine, logging more than seven consecutive years of rising revenue as more and more outfits build their digital moats. Given the outlook, more of the same kind of growth is in the cards for a while.</p>\n<h2>International Business Machines</h2>\n<p>Finally, add <b>International Business Machines</b> (NYSE:IBM) to your list of technology stocks to buy and hold for the next decade.</p>\n<p>Yes, this is the same IBM that failed to respond to the advent of things like cloud computing, mobile devices, and all that goes with both. The company's \"strategic imperatives\" plan unveiled in 2015 was meant to steer the company away from a legacy mainframe business that was already dying and toward more contemporary opportunities like the aforementioned cloud and mobile security. By and large, though, it was too little too late.</p>\n<p>The IBM of today, however, isn't the IBM from even as recently as two years ago. It's ready to compete where it counts.</p>\n<p>Take last month's revelation of new technologies capable of fabricating a 2-nanometer microchip as an example. The microscopic measure is in reference to how small a chip's transistors can be made and still function properly. The smaller, the better, as smaller transistors consume less power, operate faster, and require less space when room is a factor. For perspective, 7-nanometer chips are the best the market has to offer right now.</p>\n<p>It's not just more functional chips IBM is starting to develop, either. Just within the past few weeks, the company has unveiled a way for data centers to more efficiently store and retrieve data, and launched AutoSQL, which is capable of retrieving data eight times faster than previous approaches are. Both technologies have a myriad of potential uses, including in the artificial intelligence arena.</p>\n<p>Read between the lines. The company already made a $14.7 billion bet on <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FIVN\">Five9</a> in July to bolster its contact center business.</p>\n<p>Analysts said it would take a few quarters for Zoom to return to its true underlying growth rate.</p>\n<p>“There are significant questions outstanding regarding how new customer demand and customer churn rates will stabilize in the core business following the loosening of COVID-19 restrictions,” analysts at Daiwa Capital wrote in a note.</p>\n<p>Zoom forecast current-quarter revenue between $1.015 billion and $1.020 billion on Monday, indicating a rise of about 31%, compared with multiple-fold growth rates in 2020.</p>\n<p>At least six brokerages cut their price targets on Zoom, according to Refinitiv data, with Piper Sandler being the most bearish - slashing its price target by over $100 to $369.</p>\n<p>Shares of the company fell by the most in more than nine months to close at $289.50 on Tuesday.</p>\n<p>The company’s shares rallied to stratospheric highs since February last year, with its valuation touching $175 billion in October. Its price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is just 23, while the forward earnings multiple of 17 indicates that more bottom-line growth is in the cards. These multiples are lower than the <b>S&amp;P 500 Index</b>'s trailing P/E of 31 and forward P/E of 22.</p>\n<p>That means there's a golden opportunity for investors to add a rapidly growing company to their portfolios at an attractive valuation, and they shouldn't miss out. The company delivered record quarterly revenue of $6.2 billion in Q3, up 41% year over year. It also clocked a record (adjusted) operating margin of 32.7%, a jump of 6.3 percentage points over the prior year.</p>\n<p>The terrific sales and margin growth led to record adjusted earnings of $1.90 per share, up 79% from the year-ago quarter. The results crushed the expectations of analysts who'd been looking for $1.77 per share in earnings on $5.94 billion in revenue.</p>\n<p>Applied Materials' guidance was the icing on the cake. The company expects, at the midpoint of its guidance range, to earn $1.94 per share this quarter on revenue of $6.33 billion. Wall Street had set the bar lower; analysts were expecting just $1.81 in earnings per share on $6.04 billion in revenue. The midpoint of the guidance indicates that Applied is anticipating 35% year-over-year revenue growth this quarter, while non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings could increase 55%.</p>\n<p>The impressive guidance is a clue that Applied Materials has switched into a higher gear, and it's unlikely to step off the gas given the massive end-market opportunity at hand. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising to see its growth over the next decade significantly outpacing the rate at which it's grown in the past 10 years, helping the stock to fly higher once again.</p>\n<h2>Sustainable growth drivers can help the stock soar</h2>\n<p>Applied Materials supplies chip fabrication equipment, services, and software to semiconductor manufacturers. Its largest source of revenue is the semiconductor systems business, through which Applied develops, manufactures, and sells semiconductor fabrication equipment. This segment produced nearly 72% of the company's total revenue last quarter and recorded 53% year-over-year growth.</p>\n<p>Within the semiconductor systems business, the foundry/logic vertical occupied the largest share with 63% of total revenue, up from 55% in the year-ago quarter. The foundry business is built for long-term growth, as chipmakers across the globe are ramping up capacity. For instance, global semiconductor capital spending stood at an estimated $29.4 billion in 2010, according to <b>Gartner</b>. Last year, that number had ballooned to $106.9 billion.</p>\n<p>Gartner estimates that global semiconductor spending will rise to $141.9 billion this year. Spending on semiconductor equipment can keep moving higher in the coming years on the back of a huge jump in chip demand.</p>\n<p>Applied Materials points out that the semiconductor industry took 40 years to achieve its first $200 billion in revenue; from 2000 to 2017, the industry added the next $200 billion. An additional $200 billion of revenue is expected by 2024, over a shorter span of just seven years. What's more, the semiconductor industry's revenue is anticipated to increase a whopping $400 billion from 2025 to 2030, hitting $1 trillion at the end of the forecast period.</p>\n<p>Chipmakers will need to buy new equipment or upgrade their existing setups to cater to this massive increase in semiconductor demand, which will be driven by several verticals including automotive, networking, and industrial.
