The bad news is it's still deep in the red, and only selling a fraction of the number of tickets it was selling before the pandemic took hold.</p>\n<p>None of this is terribly shocking, of course. A year earlier, the world was largely shut down due to COVID-19. Though the contagion is still with us, consumers and businesses alike are coping. Theaters in the U.S. were mostly reopened by March -- before AMC's second quarter began -- and studios were at least willing to give theaters a try. Universal's <i>Fast and Furious</i> series entry <i>F9</i>&nbsp;debuted in June, catching the tail end of the quarter in question.<i> A Quiet Place, Part II,</i> and <i>Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard</i> were also released in May and June, respectively. <i>Godzilla vs. Kong</i> was in theaters back in April. They weren't necessarily must-sees, but for newly vaccinated movie-goers ready to get out and do something close to normal again, they were something.</p>\n<p>As it turns out, though, they were still very little. AMC has miles to go before nearing the sort of business it was doing before the coronavirus rattled the world.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f60e80beb92a6bcec1a0ff4dbc1b82bd\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>A still-ugly picture</h2>\n<p>The image below speaks volumes, plotting the number of movie tickets AMC sold every quarter through the quarter ending in June. Also plotted are the company's historical quarterly revenue, adjusted EBITDA, and operating profit (or loss), which is a function of those ticket sales. As the saying goes, read 'em and weep.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F638611%2F081021-amc-fiscal-history.png&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"403\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data source: AMC Entertainment Holdings. Ticket data is in thousands.</span></p>\n<p>Last quarter's 22.1 million tickets sold is around a fourth of the company's usual quarterly ticket sales, around 90 million. Q2's revenue of $444.7 million is roughly a third of the normal figure of $1.3 billion. The most recent results are clearly better than the non-existent numbers being produced a year ago, but still, we're miles away from the pre-pandemic norm. The company's also still deep in the red, reporting an operating loss of $296.6 million and negative adjusted EBITDA of $150.8 million.</p>\n<p>Neither the numbers nor the trend should be surprising, even if analysts and investors alike could only make broad guesses given that the turnaround remains a work in progress. Any revenue and earnings estimate that's even close to the actual reported figure is impressive in light of the circumstances.</p>\n<p>The earnings beat itself, however, has largely obscured more important matters and left important questions unanswered. Chief among these questions is, how much longer will it take the entire movie industry to crawl all the way out of the hole it's still clearly in?</p>\n<h2>From sizzle to fizzle</h2>\n<p>The release of <i>F9</i> in June drew patrons back to theaters, to be sure. Box Office Mojo reports domestic ticket sales of nearly $99 million for that late-June weekend, which was the best weekend the business had seen since February of last year.&nbsp;<b>Walt Disney</b>'s (NYSE:DIS) <i>Black Widow</i> led an even better weekend in early July, leading to $117 million worth of ticket sales in the U.S.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e24f62e8ffec16871093643907bf6e1f\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"406\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data source: Box Office Mojo. Chart by author.</span></p>\n<p>Things have clearly cooled off in the meantime, however, despite reasonably splashy titles like<i> Jungle Cruise, Space Jam: A New Legacy</i>, and <i>The Suicide Squad</i> being in theaters. <i>Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard</i> and <i>A Quiet Place, Part II</i> are also still in theaters, offering at least something theatrical to a wide audience. Consumers just aren't as stoked about going to the movies as they were a month ago.</p>\n<p>Can AMC explain these gloomy trends with the resurgence of COVID-19 via the delta variant? Sure, that's a headwind that can't be ignored. Something else that can't be ignored, however, is the fact that<i> Jungle Cruise, The Suicide Squad, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Black Widow,</i> and <i>F9</i> can all be streamed at home.</p>\n<h2>Bottom line</h2>\n<p>This isn't a forecast for a complete collapse of AMC. One way or another, the theater chain will carry on. It may require some sort of reorganization or debt restructuring, but the name will survive.</p>\n<p>The return to normalcy (or profitability) is at least several quarters away, though, and that could be a few rough quarters. In the meantime, this company has to justify an $18.5 billion market cap, never having produced more than a billion dollars' worth of EBITDA in any four-quarter stretch and never having turned an annualized operating profit of more than $265 million in any four-quarter span -- even in its 2018 heyday.</p>\n<p>At the very least, AMC investors should exercise caution. These investors should also start asking exactly how AMC is going to convince a bunch of consumers to fall out of love with streaming new releases at home. A year earlier, the world was largely shut down due to COVID-19. Though the contagion is still with us, consumers and businesses alike are coping. Theaters in the U.S. were mostly reopened by March -- before AMC's second quarter began -- and studios were at least willing to give theaters a try. Universal's Fast and Furious series entry F9 debuted in June, catching the tail end of the quarter in question. A Quiet Place, Part II, and Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard were also released in May and June, respectively. Godzilla vs. Kong was in theaters back in April. They weren't necessarily must-sees, but for newly vaccinated movie-goers ready to get out and do something close to normal again, they were something.\nAs it turns out, though, they were still very little. Q2's revenue of $444.7 million is roughly a third of the normal figure of $1.3 billion. The most recent results are clearly better than the non-existent numbers being produced a year ago, but still, we're miles away from the pre-pandemic norm. The company's also still deep in the red, reporting an operating loss of $296.6 million and negative adjusted EBITDA of $150.8 million.\nNeither the numbers nor the trend should be surprising, even if analysts and investors alike could only make broad guesses given that the turnaround remains a work in progress. Any revenue and earnings estimate that's even close to the actual reported figure is impressive in light of the circumstances.\nThe earnings beat itself, however, has largely obscured more important matters and left important questions unanswered. Chief among these questions is, how much longer will it take the entire movie industry to crawl all the way out of the hole it's still clearly in?\nFrom sizzle to fizzle\nThe release of F9 in June drew patrons back to theaters, to be sure. If a broker sells a call and buys the stock, they can earn the options commission and, if the stock rises, they can deliver the stock purchased to the call holder. Call options volume, which rose almost 200% on Monday compared to Friday, is perhaps the biggest reason NIO shares might be more volatile.\nCall options give the holder the right to buy a stock at a fixed price. (Buying a call is a bullish take on the underlying stock.) Brokers will sell and trade options contracts because they want to earn a commission on a trade. But brokers don’t want to be short a call option, which means they’ll have to take a loss if the stock rises.\nOne way brokers can hedge options positions is to buy the underlying stock. If a broker sells a call and buys the stock, they can earn the options commission and, if the stock rises, they can deliver the stock purchased to the call holder. In that scenario, the broker doesn’t have to buy shares at a higher price. That might not sound like some shocking revelation, but trust me, I had all but relegated the tablet to video watching and light gaming duties. Since this month’s release of the iPadOS 15 beta, however, I’ve left my laptop mostly behind and have done the vast majority of my work from the iPad.</p>\n<p>Now I have even stronger feelings for what Apple Inc. needs to change about the iPad—and it goes beyond software. It’s time for a giant screen, one in the 14-inch to 16-inch range. I love the speed, touchscreen, versatility and Magic Keyboard, but the 12.9-inch display is far too small for someone accustomed to a 16-inch MacBook Pro.</p>\n<p>And I’m not the only one who thinks that: I’m told that Apple has engineers and designers exploring larger iPads that could hit stores a couple of years down the road at the earliest. They’re unlikely for next year—with Apple’s attention on a&nbsp;redesigned iPad Pro&nbsp;in the current sizes for 2022—and it’s possible they never come at all. But a big iPad would be the perfect device for many people, including me, and would continue to blur the lines between tablet and laptop.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1dfbe3939d99fa08873818e1774ac143\" tg-width=\"2000\" tg-height=\"1333\"><span>Photographer: Nina Riggio/Bloomberg</span></p>\n<p>Speaking of the iPad and Mac becoming more similar, I think Apple has absolutely moved the needle with the iPad Pro, when it comes to its software, but it still ultimately needs to allow Mac apps and Mac-like multitasking with more flexible arrangements of app windows.</p>\n<p>I’m liking the multitasking improvements so far in the iPad beta. The biggest change there for me is the ability to launch apps into split view from the home screen, rather than just from the dock. I’m digging the App Library, which is basically now the iPad version of Launchpad on the Mac.</p>\n<p>But I’d still like the ability to have four or five easily resizable and movable windows in front of me at once like I can on my Mac. Or on Windows, which just&nbsp;showed off a new version&nbsp;last week with a cleaner&nbsp;interface. And I’d like to be able to run some of my Mac apps, such as those for work, that don’t exist on the iPad. A larger iPad Pro would be the perfect place for both of those enhancements. It’s time for Apple to rip off the Band-Aid and go all in on the iPad.</p>\n<p><b>The Bench</b></p>\n<p><b>Amazon explores AR glasses and a foldable Kindle e-reader.</b>Apple’s labs in Cupertino, California, aren’t the only ones cooking up new projects. While Amazon.com Inc. is still at work on many home gadgets like&nbsp;Echos&nbsp;and a future&nbsp;home robot, it also has its eyes on mobile devices, according to a person with knowledge of the company’s explorations. That includes long-term plans for augmented reality glasses (of course, a space&nbsp;Apple plans to enter) and even internal discussion of a Kindle e-reader with a foldable screen, after&nbsp;Samsung popularized the technology.</p>\n<p><b>Apple’s App Store revenue machine keeps growing.</b>Apple continues to have several billion reasons to protect its App Store from lawmakers. The company generated $12 billion in revenue from the App Store globally in the first half of 2021, up 18% from the same period a year ago, according to estimates from Sensor Tower shared exclusively with Bloomberg Power On. That even takes into account some apps moving to a&nbsp;15% revenue share&nbsp;as part of Apple’s small business program.</p>\n<p><b>Peloton takes on the Apple Watch’s heart rate sensor.</b>Peloton Interactive Inc. is ready to move beyond bikes and treadmills and into wearables, a natural extension of the fitness technology space. The company is working on a&nbsp;heart rate monitor&nbsp;for the arm to interact with the Peloton phone app and its exercise equipment. My guess is that’s only the beginning for their wearable ambitions, though.</p>\n<p><b>Speaking of the Apple Watch, new models aplenty are coming.</b>Apple has a long roadmap ahead for the watch. On tap for this year:a bit of a redesign&nbsp;with an upgraded screen, faster processor and new wireless technology. For next year, expect a more iterative update to the flagship model that adds a body temperature sensor alongside a new Apple Watch SE and an&nbsp;explorer edition&nbsp;with a more rugged frame. A&nbsp;blood sugar monitor is further off.</p>\n<p><b>Roster Changes</b></p>\n<p>Since the project started to take shape&nbsp;around 2014, Apple’s self-driving car team has seen several leadership changes. But in 2018, it gained some management stability with the hire of Doug Field, a vice president who now runs the effort after steering Tesla Inc.’s development of the Model 3.</p>\n<p>This year, however, the car team underwent some more change: At least three top members of the group&nbsp;departed this year: Benjamin Lyon, Jaime Waydo and Dave Scott, who worked on engineering, safety systems and robotics, respectively. More recently,Apple hired Ulrich Kranz&nbsp;as a top lieutenant to Field. Kranz is an auto industry veteran who helped oversee the development of BMW’s i3 electric car and i8 hybrid&nbsp;and held leading roles at self-driving startups Canoo and Faraday Future. Kranz’s résumé isn’t exactly a slam dunk in the car world, with the BMWs being panned by some design critics and both of his startups mostly failing, but his experience reaffirms Apple’s ultimate ambitions.</p>\n<p>These weren’t the only changes to the top levels of Apple’s car team. A year earlier, the world was largely shut down due to COVID-19. Though the contagion is still with us, consumers and businesses alike are coping. Theaters in the U.S. were mostly reopened by March -- before AMC's second quarter began -- and studios were at least willing to give theaters a try. Universal's <i>Fast and Furious</i> series entry <i>F9</i>&nbsp;debuted in June, catching the tail end of the quarter in question.<i> A Quiet Place, Part II,</i> and <i>Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard</i> were also released in May and June, respectively. <i>Godzilla vs. Kong</i> was in theaters back in April. They weren't necessarily must-sees, but for newly vaccinated movie-goers ready to get out and do something close to normal again, they were something.</p>\n<p>As it turns out, though, they were still very little. Netflix is the undisputed leading premium streaming video service, hitting the midpoint of this year with&nbsp;209.2 million paying accounts&nbsp;worldwide.</p>\n<p>One might argue that the killer advantage Netflix has is scale, but it's not as simple as the obvious benefit of reaching the largest audience in the market. Being the top dog means it can divide the cost of acquiring any new piece of content by the largest number of premium accounts. The cost per member of any new movie or series on its platform would be lower for Netflix than it would be for any of its smaller rivals.</p>\n<p>Netflix also has more than two decades of streaming history. Netflix knows exactly what its subscribers are watching, and just as importantly what they're not watching. It has its finger on the pulse of streaming entertainment in a way that is unmatched by anyone else. It's not a surprise that Netflix has now increased its monthly U.S. subscription rates five times in the past seven years and keeps growing.</p>\n<p><b>Roku</b></p>\n<p>Agnosticism is the killer advantage for Roku. Unlike other streaming operating systems and dongles put out by tech or media giants with their flagship premium offerings to promote, Roku has historically played nice with the gamut of streaming apps. There's a reason why there are now thousands of services you can download through your Roku.</p>\n<p>It's not always perfect. We saw Roku battle with two new services last year over revenue-sharing arrangements, but all parties eventually came to terms to make sure that those new premium offerings didn't miss out on Roku's massive audience.</p>\n<p>With Roku's platform revenue the key driver in the 81% year-over-year revenue surge inits latest quarter, it's clear the model works. Roku's agnosticism makes it a major draw to smart TV manufacturers looking for a built-in operating system and for consumers buying retail products to turn dumb TVs into smart ones. Roku's recent moves to beef up proprietary content -- like buying the now defunct Quibi content catalog -- isn't enough for any streaming service to see Roku as a threat instead of an ally.</p>\n<p><b>fuboTV</b></p>\n<p>We're kissing our cable and satellite television bills goodbye, but a growing number of cord-cutters are turning to live TV streaming services to fill the void. fuboTV is still a small player in this niche, but its \"sports first\" positioning is making it the fastest growing player in the field. Revenue has accelerated in each of its first three quarters as a pubic company,nearly tripling in last week's financial update.</p>\n<p>Having a set demographic of sports fans is making it magnetic to marketers. Ad revenue per user clocked in at $8.70 a month for fuboTV, nearly triple what Roku is commanding -- and the clincher here is that fuboTV is still collecting premium subscription revenue on top of that. Another killer advantage for fuboTV with its unique market positioning is that many sports fans enjoy wagering. By the end of this year fuboTV expects to launch Fubo Sportsbook, a gambling app that will work alongside fuboTV to update betting options based on what a subscriber is watching.</p>\n<p><b>Walt Disney</b></p>\n<p>It may seem insane, but Disney+ wasn't around two years ago. It launched in November 2019 and hit the ground running. Disney's success in streaming is a testament to its unmatched properties.</p>\n<p>Disney was the studio behind all six of the country's top-grossing theatrical releases in 2019, the last good year for the multiplex industry. It operates the world's most visited theme parks. Its Disney Channel and majority-owned ESPN are the top dogs in their respective markets. A hit in one of its divisions can quickly be adapted to be monetized elsewhere.</p>\n<p>Disney+ became a major player out of the gate as a result of the&nbsp;media stock's vault of content. Between its homegrown properties and the franchises it acquired in 10-figure deals for Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, no one comes close to the breadth of the House of Mouse for potential blockbusters.</p>\n<p>Streaming entertainment is going to have a lot winners. It's the present and future of video consumption. That might not sound like some shocking revelation, but trust me, I had all but relegated the tablet to video watching and light gaming duties. Since this month’s release of the iPadOS 15 beta, however, I’ve left my laptop mostly behind and have done the vast majority of my work from the iPad.</p>\n<p>Now I have even stronger feelings for what Apple Inc. needs to change about the iPad—and it goes beyond software. It’s time for a giant screen, one in the 14-inch to 16-inch range. I love the speed, touchscreen, versatility and Magic Keyboard, but the 12.9-inch display is far too small for someone accustomed to a 16-inch MacBook Pro.</p>\n<p>And I’m not the only one who thinks that: I’m told that Apple has engineers and designers exploring larger iPads that could hit stores a couple of years down the road at the earliest. They’re unlikely for next year—with Apple’s attention on a&nbsp;redesigned iPad Pro&nbsp;in the current sizes for 2022—and it’s possible they never come at all. But a big iPad would be the perfect device for many people, including me, and would continue to blur the lines between tablet and laptop.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1dfbe3939d99fa08873818e1774ac143\" tg-width=\"2000\" tg-height=\"1333\"><span>Photographer: Nina Riggio/Bloomberg</span></p>\n<p>Speaking of the iPad and Mac becoming more similar, I think Apple has absolutely moved the needle with the iPad Pro, when it comes to its software, but it still ultimately needs to allow Mac apps and Mac-like multitasking with more flexible arrangements of app windows.</p>\n<p>I’m liking the multitasking improvements so far in the iPad beta. The biggest change there for me is the ability to launch apps into split view from the home screen, rather than just from the dock. I’m digging the App Library, which is basically now the iPad version of Launchpad on the Mac.</p>\n<p>But I’d still like the ability to have four or five easily resizable and movable windows in front of me at once like I can on my Mac. Or on Windows, which just&nbsp;showed off a new version&nbsp;last week with a cleaner&nbsp;interface. And I’d like to be able to run some of my Mac apps, such as those for work, that don’t exist on the iPad. A larger iPad Pro would be the perfect place for both of those enhancements. It’s time for Apple to rip off the Band-Aid and go all in on the iPad.</p>\n<p><b>The Bench</b></p>\n<p><b>Amazon explores AR glasses and a foldable Kindle e-reader.</b>Apple’s labs in Cupertino, California, aren’t the only ones cooking up new projects. While Amazon.com Inc. is still at work on many home gadgets like&nbsp;Echos&nbsp;and a future&nbsp;home robot, it also has its eyes on mobile devices, according to a person with knowledge of the company’s explorations. That includes long-term plans for augmented reality glasses (of course, a space&nbsp;Apple plans to enter) and even internal discussion of a Kindle e-reader with a foldable screen, after&nbsp;Samsung popularized the technology.</p>\n<p><b>Apple’s App Store revenue machine keeps growing.</b>Apple continues to have several billion reasons to protect its App Store from lawmakers. The company generated $12 billion in revenue from the App Store globally in the first half of 2021, up 18% from the same period a year ago, according to estimates from Sensor Tower shared exclusively with Bloomberg Power On. That even takes into account some apps moving to a&nbsp;15% revenue share&nbsp;as part of Apple’s small business program.</p>\n<p><b>Peloton takes on the Apple Watch’s heart rate sensor.</b>Peloton Interactive Inc. is ready to move beyond bikes and treadmills and into wearables, a natural extension of the fitness technology space. The company is working on a&nbsp;heart rate monitor&nbsp;for the arm to interact with the Peloton phone app and its exercise equipment. My guess is that’s only the beginning for their wearable ambitions, though.</p>\n<p><b>Speaking of the Apple Watch, new models aplenty are coming.</b>Apple has a long roadmap ahead for the watch. On tap for this year:a bit of a redesign&nbsp;with an upgraded screen, faster processor and new wireless technology. For next year, expect a more iterative update to the flagship model that adds a body temperature sensor alongside a new Apple Watch SE and an&nbsp;explorer edition&nbsp;with a more rugged frame. A&nbsp;blood sugar monitor is further off.</p>\n<p><b>Roster Changes</b></p>\n<p>Since the project started to take shape&nbsp;around 2014, Apple’s self-driving car team has seen several leadership changes. But in 2018, it gained some management stability with the hire of Doug Field, a vice president who now runs the effort after steering Tesla Inc.’s development of the Model 3.</p>\n<p>This year, however, the car team underwent some more change: At least three top members of the group&nbsp;departed this year: Benjamin Lyon, Jaime Waydo and Dave Scott, who worked on engineering, safety systems and robotics, respectively. More recently,Apple hired Ulrich Kranz&nbsp;as a top lieutenant to Field. Kranz is an auto industry veteran who helped oversee the development of BMW’s i3 electric car and i8 hybrid&nbsp;and held leading roles at self-driving startups Canoo and Faraday Future. Kranz’s résumé isn’t exactly a slam dunk in the car world, with the BMWs being panned by some design critics and both of his startups mostly failing, but his experience reaffirms Apple’s ultimate ambitions.</p>\n<p>These weren’t the only changes to the top levels of Apple’s car team. That might not sound like some shocking revelation, but trust me, I had all but relegated the tablet to video watching and light gaming duties. Since this month’s release of the iPadOS 15 beta, however, I’ve left my laptop mostly behind and have done the vast majority of my work from the iPad.\nNow I have even stronger feelings for what Apple Inc. needs to change about the iPad—and it goes beyond software. It’s time for a giant screen, one in the 14-inch to 16-inch range. I love the speed, touchscreen, versatility and Magic Keyboard, but the 12.9-inch display is far too small for someone accustomed to a 16-inch MacBook Pro.\nAnd I’m not the only one who thinks that: I’m told that Apple has engineers and designers exploring larger iPads that could hit stores a couple of years down the road at the earliest. They’re unlikely for next year—with Apple’s attention on a redesigned iPad Pro in the current sizes for 2022—and it’s possible they never come at all. But a big iPad would be the perfect device for many people, including me, and would continue to blur the lines between tablet and laptop.\nPhotographer: Nina Riggio/Bloomberg\nSpeaking of the iPad and Mac becoming more similar, I think Apple has absolutely moved the needle with the iPad Pro, when it comes to its software, but it still ultimately needs to allow Mac apps and Mac-like multitasking with more flexible arrangements of app windows.\nI’m liking the multitasking improvements so far in the iPad beta. The biggest change there for me is the ability to launch apps into split view from the home screen, rather than just from the dock. I’m digging the App Library, which is basically now the iPad version of Launchpad on the Mac.\nBut I’d still like the ability to have four or five easily resizable and movable windows in front of me at once like I can on my Mac. Or on Windows, which just showed off a new version last week with a cleaner interface. And I’d like to be able to run some of my Mac apps, such as those for work, that don’t exist on the iPad. A larger iPad Pro would be the perfect place for both of those enhancements. It’s time for Apple to rip off the Band-Aid and go all in on the iPad.\nThe Bench\nAmazon explores AR glasses and a foldable Kindle e-reader.Apple’s labs in Cupertino, California, aren’t the only ones cooking up new projects. While Amazon.com Inc. is still at work on many home gadgets like Echos and a future home robot, it also has its eyes on mobile devices, according to a person with knowledge of the company’s explorations. That includes long-term plans for augmented reality glasses (of course, a space Apple plans to enter) and even internal discussion of a Kindle e-reader with a foldable screen, after Samsung popularized the technology.\nApple’s App Store revenue machine keeps growing.Apple continues to have several billion reasons to protect its App Store from lawmakers. The company generated $12 billion in revenue from the App Store globally in the first half of 2021, up 18% from the same period a year ago, according to estimates from Sensor Tower shared exclusively with Bloomberg Power On. That even takes into account some apps moving to a 15% revenue share as part of Apple’s small business program.\nPeloton takes on the Apple Watch’s heart rate sensor.Peloton Interactive Inc. is ready to move beyond bikes and treadmills and into wearables, a natural extension of the fitness technology space. The company is working on a heart rate monitor for the arm to interact with the Peloton phone app and its exercise equipment. My guess is that’s only the beginning for their wearable ambitions, though.\nSpeaking of the Apple Watch, new models aplenty are coming.Apple has a long roadmap ahead for the watch. On tap for this year:a bit of a redesign with an upgraded screen, faster processor and new wireless technology. For next year, expect a more iterative update to the flagship model that adds a body temperature sensor alongside a new Apple Watch SE and an explorer edition with a more rugged frame. A blood sugar monitor is further off.\nRoster Changes\nSince the project started to take shape around 2014, Apple’s self-driving car team has seen several leadership changes. But in 2018, it gained some management stability with the hire of Doug Field, a vice president who now runs the effort after steering Tesla Inc.’s development of the Model 3.\nThis year, however, the car team underwent some more change: At least three top members of the group departed this year: Benjamin Lyon, Jaime Waydo and Dave Scott, who worked on engineering, safety systems and robotics, respectively. More recently,Apple hired Ulrich Kranz as a top lieutenant to Field. Kranz is an auto industry veteran who helped oversee the development of BMW’s i3 electric car and i8 hybrid and held leading roles at self-driving startups Canoo and Faraday Future. Kranz’s résumé isn’t exactly a slam dunk in the car world, with the BMWs being panned by some design critics and both of his startups mostly failing, but his experience reaffirms Apple’s ultimate ambitions.\nThese weren’t the only changes to the top levels of Apple’s car team. Thechip stockhas rallied by nearly 240% since January 2020.</p>\n<p>The magnitude of that surge has plenty of investors questioning whether there's still a chance to buy in, or if they have essentially missed out on their opportunity to profit from this particular rally. Let's take a closer look at NVIDIA and attempt to provide an answer.</p>\n<p><b>The state of the stock</b></p>\n<p>NVIDIA's share price has increased by just over 100% in the last 12 months, and its scheduled four-for-onestock split is less than two weeks away.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/559f2527ced6eebe92cebc5c4bff9bbe\" tg-width=\"733\" tg-height=\"443\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>That stock price surge has taken NVIDIA's P/E ratio to almost 95. The stock has not seen such high valuations since the early 2000s. Moreover, when NVIDIA rallied in late 2016 and early 2018, P/E multiples above 50 amounted to sell signals -- the stock plummeted soon after hitting those levels.</p>\n<p>Additionally, it has become expensive compared to its peers. Archrival<b>AMD</b>sells for under 40 times earnings,<b>Qualcomm</b>trades at 20 times earnings, and<b>Intel</b>sports a P/E ratio of less than 13.</p>\n<p><b>Competitive advantages</b></p>\n<p>On the positive side, NVIDIA possessives competitive edges in a number of tech niches. It has gained traction in the cryptocurrency space with a popular and powerful GPU specifically designed for mining digital tokens. It has built a presence in the realm of supercomputers -- its Cambridge-1 supercomputer will be used by businesses and academics to accelerate research in healthcare and genomics. Furthermore, assuming its proposed acquisition of Arm Holdings goes through, it could further widen its competitive moat, as many manufacturers use Arm's chips in devices such as digital TVs and smartphones.</p>\n<p>And its longtime core products -- GPUs for video gaming -- are helping it foster innovations in the growing market for artificial intelligence systems. Its chips will power key applications in self-driving cars, data centers, and cloud computing, among others. Additionally, its AI-on-5G platform will also aid in deploying AI-based applications across 5G networks.</p>\n<p><b>Financials and outlook</b></p>\n<p>Given these innovations, investors can easily understand how NVIDIA's successes have boosted its financials. In its fiscal 2022 first quarter, which ended May 2, revenue rose 84% year over year to $5.66 billion. This included a 106% increase in gaming revenue and a 79% surge in data center revenue.</p>\n<p>That lifted its GAAP net income by 109% to over $1.9 billion. Slower growth in operating expenses along with a boost in earnings from unrealized gains contributed to the bottom-line gains.</p>\n<p>That performance for the most recently reported quarter also outpaced NVIDIA's results for its full fiscal 2021, when revenue rose 53% and GAAP net income increased 55%.</p>\n<p>The company saw nearly $1.6 billion in free cash flow in the latest quarter, and close to $4.7 billion in fiscal 2021.</p>\n<p>Nonetheless, its outlook may give investors pause. For its fiscal Q2, the company expects revenue to be within 2 percentage points of $6.3 billion, a massive increase from the $3.9 billion it reported in the same quarter last year. However, the company declined to offer an outlook for the remainder of fiscal 2022. This could reflect management's uncertainty about macro conditions as global economies attempt to emerge from the shadow of the pandemic.</p>\n<p><b>Should I still consider NVIDIA?</b></p>\n<p>Although the company's long-term growth story could easily continue, investors may want to avoid NVIDIA stock for now. Management's decision not to provide an outlook beyond Q2 indicates it could hit a rough patch ahead. Moreover, it doesn't appear wise to pay almost 95 times earnings for this chipmaker under current conditions, especially when the stock rarely traded at a P/E ratio above 50 before 2021.
