Well, I would be floored if they didn’t go 75 basis points,” said Jonathan Pingle, chief U.S. economist at UBS.</p><p>The Fed decision will come at 2 p.m. on Wednesday after two days of talks among members of the Federal Open Market Committee.</p><p>What happens at Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s press conference a half-hour later will be more fraught.</p><p>The focus will be on whether Powell gives a signal to the market about plans for a smaller rise in its benchmark interest rate in December.</p><p>The Fed’s “dot plot” projection of interest rates, released in September, already penciled in a slowdown to a half-point rate hike in December, followed by a quarter-point hike early in 2023.</p><p>The market is expecting signals about a change in policy, and many think Powell will use his press conference to hint that a slower pace of interest-rate rises is indeed coming.</p><p>A Wall Street Journal story last week reported that some Fed officials are not keen to keep hiking rates by 75 basis  points per meeting. That, alongside San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly’s comment that the Fed needs to start talking about slowing down the pace of hikes, were taken as a sign of a slowdown to come by the stock and bond markets.</p><p>“No one wants to be late for the pivot party, so the hint was enough,” said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.</p><p>Luke Tilley, chief economist at Wilmington Trust, said he thinks Powell will signal a smaller rate hike in December by focusing on some of the good wage-inflation news that was published earlier Friday.</p><p>There was a clear slowdown in private-sector wage growth, Tilley said.</p><p>But the problem with Powell signaling he has found an exit ramp from the jumbo rate hikes this year is that his committee members might not be ready to signal a downshift, Pingle of UBS said. He argued that the inflation data writ large in September won’t give Fed officials any confidence that a cooling in price pressures is in the offing.</p><p>Another worry for Powell is that future data might not cooperate.</p><p>There are two employment reports and two consumer-price-inflation reports before the next Fed policy meeting on Dec. 13–14.</p><p>So Powell might have to reverse course.</p><p>“If you pre-commit and the data slaps you in the head — then you can’t follow through,” said Stephen Stanley, chief economist at Amherst Pierpont Securities.</p><p>This has been the Fed’s pattern all year, Stanley noted. It was only in March that the Fed thought its terminal rate, or the peak benchmark rate, wouldn’t rise above 3%.</p><p>While the Fed may want to slow down the pace of rate hikes, it doesn’t want the market to take a downshift in the size of rate rises as a signal that a rate cut is in the offing. But some analysts believe that the first cut in fact will come soon after the Fed reduces the size of its rate rises.</p><p>In general terms, the Fed wants financial conditions to stay restrictive in order to squeeze the life out of inflation.</p><p>Pingle said he expects Kansas City Fed President Esther George to formally dissent in favor of a slower pace of rate hikes.</p><p>There is growing disagreement among economists about the “peak” or “terminal rate” of this hiking cycle. The Fed has penciled in a terminal rate in the range of 4.5%–4.75%. Some economists think the terminal rate could be lower than that. Others think that rates will go above 5%.</p><p>Those who think the Fed will stop short of 5% tend to talk about a recession, with the fast pace of Fed hikes “breaking something.” Those who see rates above 5% think that inflation will be much more persistent.</p><p>Ultimately, Amherst Pierpont’s Stanley is of the view that the data aren’t going to be the deciding factor. “The answer to the question of what either forces or allows the Fed to stop is probably not going to come from the data. In other words, some folks view tokens like Bitcoin and Dogecoin as the future global currencies, but virtually nothing has suggested that this will come to fruition.</p>\n<p>The reality is that digital currencies are virtually useless outside of a cryptocurrency exchange. Bitcoin has been stuck handling 250,000 to 300,000 transactions daily for years, while Dogecoin has been averaging closer to 30,000 daily transactions of late. For comparison's sake, payment-processing giants <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/V\">Visa</a></b>&nbsp;and <b>Mastercard</b>&nbsp;handled 700 million transactions daily on a combined basis in 2018.</p>\n<p>To build on this point, Fundera estimated earlier this year that only around 15,200 businesses worldwide accepted Bitcoin. Meanwhile, online business directory Cryptwerk finds that Dogecoin is accepted by 1,400 companies. For context, there are more than 32 million businesses in the U.S., and an estimated 582 million entrepreneurs worldwide. There simply isn't the broad-based adoption that's being hyped by cryptocurrency supporters.</p>\n<p>At the same time, blockchain technology is caught in a Catch-22. Blockchain being the transparent and immutable underlying ledger of digital currencies that logs transactions. No business is willing to abandon time-tested infrastructure in favor of blockchain until it's demonstrated that blockchain can be scaled in the real world. At the same time, there won't be any evidence that blockchain is revolutionary if no businesses are willing to be an early stage guinea pig, so to speak.</p>\n<p>History unequivocally shows that all bubbles eventually burst, without exception. That's the fate awaiting cryptocurrencies.</p>\n<h2>Dump digital currencies in favor of this fast-growing trio</h2>\n<p>Rather than put your money to work in an asset class that's being driven by hype and emotion, my suggestion would be to buy the following trio of supercharged stocks. If you buy stakes in innovative businesses whose products and services have growing real-world application, and you hold these stakes for long periods of time, you'll very likely get rich.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/16ca48e46c5ed915bdfaeb115d44e553\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Etsy</h2>\n<p>To begin with, e-commerce platform <b>Etsy</b> (NASDAQ:ETSY) will have long-term investors forgetting all about the volatility and hype associated with digital currencies.</p>\n<p>To state the obvious, Etsy was a clear winner of the coronavirus pandemic. With people stuck in their homes, many turned online to buy basic-need and discretionary goods. For Etsy, this included a healthy uptick in sales from facial coverings. In other words, some folks view tokens like Bitcoin and Dogecoin as the future global currencies, but virtually nothing has suggested that this will come to fruition.\nThe reality is that digital currencies are virtually useless outside of a cryptocurrency exchange. Bitcoin has been stuck handling 250,000 to 300,000 transactions daily for years, while Dogecoin has been averaging closer to 30,000 daily transactions of late. For comparison's sake, payment-processing giants Visa and Mastercard handled 700 million transactions daily on a combined basis in 2018.\nTo build on this point, Fundera estimated earlier this year that only around 15,200 businesses worldwide accepted Bitcoin. Meanwhile, online business directory Cryptwerk finds that Dogecoin is accepted by 1,400 companies. For context, there are more than 32 million businesses in the U.S., and an estimated 582 million entrepreneurs worldwide. There simply isn't the broad-based adoption that's being hyped by cryptocurrency supporters.\nAt the same time, blockchain technology is caught in a Catch-22. Blockchain being the transparent and immutable underlying ledger of digital currencies that logs transactions. No business is willing to abandon time-tested infrastructure in favor of blockchain until it's demonstrated that blockchain can be scaled in the real world. At the same time, there won't be any evidence that blockchain is revolutionary if no businesses are willing to be an early stage guinea pig, so to speak.\nHistory unequivocally shows that all bubbles eventually burst, without exception. That's the fate awaiting cryptocurrencies.\nDump digital currencies in favor of this fast-growing trio\nRather than put your money to work in an asset class that's being driven by hype and emotion, my suggestion would be to buy the following trio of supercharged stocks. I ask as a follow up tomy column earlier this monthin which I concluded that even under optimistic assumptions, the S&amp;P 500SPX,+0.51%over the next 10 years is unlikely to produce an annualized total real return greater than the low single-digits.</p>\n<p>My argument was that the stock market will not be able to count on the three pillars that have propped it up over the past decade — increasing valuations, profit margins and more buybacks than new shares issued (net buybacks).</p>\n<p>Some readers responded that I had overlooked an escape hatch which would enable the market to produce decent returns: corporate revenues can grow faster than the overall U.S. economy. To the extent this is so, then the stock market does not need any of those three pillars to do well.</p>\n<p>This escape hatch appears to have solid evidence behind it. Consider a recent note to clients from Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist and head of quantitative research at Credit Suisse. He reported that, according to an econometric model he constructed based on S&amp;P 500 sales and GDP since 2000, “every 1% upside in nominal GDP drives 2½–3% improvement in revenues.”</p>\n<p>If so, this certainly would be good for stock investors. It would mean that even without increasing valuations, profit margins or net buybacks, the stock market could significantly outperform the overall economy.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this argument is too good to be true. I analyzed S&amp;P 500 sales back to the early 1970s (courtesy of data from Ned Davis Research), and found almost a 1:1 correlation between sales growth and GDP growth.</p>\n<p>This is entirely what we should expect, according to Robert Arnott, chairman and founder of Research Affiliates. In an email, he said that “aggregate sales should offer a pretty clean 1:1 relationship to GDP. Any other ratio makes no sense on a sustained basis.”</p>\n<p>How then did Golub come up with such a different answer? My hunch is that it traces to how he measured sales. In an email, Golub’s colleague Manish Bangard, an equity strategist at Credit Suisse, explained that they focused on sales per share. But, as Arnott points out, this per-share number reflects the impact of net buybacks. So the high sales-to-GDP ratio that Golub reports is not a pure measure of how sales growth relates to GDP. (I did not receive a response to my requests for additional comment.)</p>\n<p><b>Investment implication</b></p>\n<p>The implication is that we should not expect the U.S. stock market over the next decade to grow faster than the economy. It may in fact grow much more slowly if P/E ratios or profit margins regress even partway to their historical mean, or if net buybacks turn out to be negative (as they’ve been for most of U.S. history).</p>\n<p>But even if P/E ratios and profit margins stay constant between now and 2031 and there are no net buybacks, the lesson of history is that the U.S. market will grow no faster than the economy.</p>\n<p>Consider what that means. TheCongressional Budget Office is projectingthat real GDP from 2022 through 2031 will grow at a 1.8% annualized rate. I ask as a follow up tomy column earlier this monthin which I concluded that even under optimistic assumptions, the S&P 500SPX,+0.51%over the next 10 years is unlikely to produce an annualized total real return greater than the low single-digits.\nMy argument was that the stock market will not be able to count on the three pillars that have propped it up over the past decade — increasing valuations, profit margins and more buybacks than new shares issued (net buybacks).\nSome readers responded that I had overlooked an escape hatch which would enable the market to produce decent returns: corporate revenues can grow faster than the overall U.S. economy. To the extent this is so, then the stock market does not need any of those three pillars to do well.\nThis escape hatch appears to have solid evidence behind it. Consider a recent note to clients from Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist and head of quantitative research at Credit Suisse. He reported that, according to an econometric model he constructed based on S&P 500 sales and GDP since 2000, “every 1% upside in nominal GDP drives 2½–3% improvement in revenues.”\nIf so, this certainly would be good for stock investors. It would mean that even without increasing valuations, profit margins or net buybacks, the stock market could significantly outperform the overall economy.\nUnfortunately, this argument is too good to be true. I analyzed S&P 500 sales back to the early 1970s (courtesy of data from Ned Davis Research), and found almost a 1:1 correlation between sales growth and GDP growth.\nThis is entirely what we should expect, according to Robert Arnott, chairman and founder of Research Affiliates. In an email, he said that “aggregate sales should offer a pretty clean 1:1 relationship to GDP. Any other ratio makes no sense on a sustained basis.”\nHow then did Golub come up with such a different answer? My hunch is that it traces to how he measured sales. In an email, Golub’s colleague Manish Bangard, an equity strategist at Credit Suisse, explained that they focused on sales per share. But, as Arnott points out, this per-share number reflects the impact of net buybacks. So the high sales-to-GDP ratio that Golub reports is not a pure measure of how sales growth relates to GDP. (I did not receive a response to my requests for additional comment.)\nInvestment implication\nThe implication is that we should not expect the U.S. stock market over the next decade to grow faster than the economy. It may in fact grow much more slowly if P/E ratios or profit margins regress even partway to their historical mean, or if net buybacks turn out to be negative (as they’ve been for most of U.S. history).\nBut even if P/E ratios and profit margins stay constant between now and 2031 and there are no net buybacks, the lesson of history is that the U.S. market will grow no faster than the economy.\nConsider what that means. TheCongressional Budget Office is projectingthat real GDP from 2022 through 2031 will grow at a 1.8% annualized rate. Whether companies are looking to invest in automating production in a warehouse or capturing data to use with advanced analytics in a retail or healthcare environment, Zebra's hardware and software solutions have the answer.</p>\n<p>As such, management expects adjusted net sales growth of 18% to 22% in 2021, having started the year forecasting 10% to 14%. Clearly, momentum is behind the company, and it's likely the expansion of smart automation and digitization in the industrial economy is going to encourage multi-year growth in sales of Zebra's solutions.</p>\n<p>Trading on 31 times estimated 2021 earnings, Zebra wouldn't be seen as avalue stockby most. Still, investors should keep an eye out for its results because it wouldn't be a surprise to see Zebra upgrade guidance again, given the reopening economy.</p>\n<p>Don't trash this dividend stock</p>\n<p><b>Daniel Foelber&nbsp;(Waste Management):</b>You may want to keep your distance when passing one of the hundreds of landfills owned by Waste Management, North America's largest integrated trash and recycling services company. But the company's stock performance has left investors smelling like a rose. Waste Management stock is up over 20% so far this year and just blasted to a new all-time high last week.</p>\n<p>While trash and recycling are a steady business model that tends to perform in good times and bad, Waste Management generates a substantial amount of revenue from its industrial and commercial clients. As business slowed during the pandemic, these businesses naturally produced less waste, which presented a challenge. The company responded by implementing cost-cutting measures, many of whichit expects will be permanent.</p>\n<p>These strategic decisions along with its resilient and diversified customer base across a slew of different industries helped it generate plenty of free cash flow (FCF) and net incometo support its dividend. The company just raised its dividend for the 18th consecutive year andinstituted a new share buyback program. All told, the company plans to distribute nearly $1 billion in dividends and buy back up to $1.35 billion in stock this year.</p>\n<p>Waste Management has the potential to combine its stable andrecession resilientbusiness model with the upside of environmentally conscious consumers who are increasingly interested in limiting waste output. During a recent talk at WasteExpo 2021, CEO Jim Fish highlighted the role Waste Management could play in managing and providing the waste necessary for companies to produce plastics and chemicals from sustainably sourced materials. Converting this proposition to profit remains uncertain. But it's a nice long-term trend that's worth following.</p>\n<p><b>Hitch a ride with this EV superstar</b></p>\n<p><b>Scott Levine(NIO):</b>NIO sputtered along during the first five months of 2021, falling nearly 21%, but the company's stock has taken a U-turn over the past few weeks and is charging higher. And there's plenty of reason to believe that this EV manufacturer can continue racing ahead in the days to come.</p>\n<p>Inthe first quarter of 2021, NIO reported strong growth in the number of deliveries. Achieving a company quarterly record, NIO delivered 20,060 vehicles in the first quarter of the new year, representing year-over-year growth of 490%. But the record was short-lived. Last week, NIO announced that it delivered 21,896 vehicles, a year-over-year increase of 112%, in the second quarter, representing a new quarterly high-water mark.</p>\n<p>Looking beyond the second quarter, investors will find that the company is working at expanding its charging infrastructure in China through 2021 -- a move that will help assuage the fears of potential customers who are worried about the convenience of charging their vehicles. As of the end of the first quarter, NIO had 206 battery swap stations, yet management forecasts expanding this to over 700 stations by the end of the year. In addition, the company, which had 146 charging stations in its network at the end of March, plans on growing this out to 600 charging stations by year-end.</p>\n<p>Besides its efforts to grow its presence in China, NIO aspires to gain a foothold in Europe as well. Last month, the company announced it received approval for the production of its SUV, NIO ES8, including approval for the associated license registrations of the vehicle. To the extent this is so, then the stock market does not need any of those three pillars to do well.</p>\n<p>This escape hatch appears to have solid evidence behind it. Consider a recent note to clients from Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist and head of quantitative research at Credit Suisse. He reported that, according to an econometric model he constructed based on S&amp;P 500 sales and GDP since 2000, “every 1% upside in nominal GDP drives 2½–3% improvement in revenues.”</p>\n<p>If so, this certainly would be good for stock investors. It would mean that even without increasing valuations, profit margins or net buybacks, the stock market could significantly outperform the overall economy.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this argument is too good to be true. I analyzed S&amp;P 500 sales back to the early 1970s (courtesy of data from Ned Davis Research), and found almost a 1:1 correlation between sales growth and GDP growth.</p>\n<p>This is entirely what we should expect, according to Robert Arnott, chairman and founder of Research Affiliates. In an email, he said that “aggregate sales should offer a pretty clean 1:1 relationship to GDP. Any other ratio makes no sense on a sustained basis.”</p>\n<p>How then did Golub come up with such a different answer? My hunch is that it traces to how he measured sales. In an email, Golub’s colleague Manish Bangard, an equity strategist at Credit Suisse, explained that they focused on sales per share. But, as Arnott points out, this per-share number reflects the impact of net buybacks. So the high sales-to-GDP ratio that Golub reports is not a pure measure of how sales growth relates to GDP. (I did not receive a response to my requests for additional comment.)</p>\n<p><b>Investment implication</b></p>\n<p>The implication is that we should not expect the U.S. stock market over the next decade to grow faster than the economy. It may in fact grow much more slowly if P/E ratios or profit margins regress even partway to their historical mean, or if net buybacks turn out to be negative (as they’ve been for most of U.S. history).</p>\n<p>But even if P/E ratios and profit margins stay constant between now and 2031 and there are no net buybacks, the lesson of history is that the U.S. market will grow no faster than the economy.</p>\n<p>Consider what that means. TheCongressional Budget Office is projectingthat real GDP from 2022 through 2031 will grow at a 1.8% annualized rate. After watching <b>Bitcoin</b> (CRYPTO:BTC) rise from $1 to $40,000 in a little over a decade, and seeing <b>Dogecoin</b> (CRYPTO:DOGE) gallop higher by 27,000% in a six-month span, investors are feeling compelled to chase the momentum in the crypto space.</p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this could prove to be a huge mistake.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e84aa34310d37f1ab30212f9dcf1bf0d\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>The cryptocurrency bubble is eventually going to burst</h2>\n<p>While there's no denying that cryptocurrency has delivered some game-changing returns, most of this upside has been built on unsubstantiated hype. In other words, some folks view tokens like Bitcoin and Dogecoin as the future global currencies, but virtually nothing has suggested that this will come to fruition.</p>\n<p>The reality is that digital currencies are virtually useless outside of a cryptocurrency exchange. Bitcoin has been stuck handling 250,000 to 300,000 transactions daily for years, while Dogecoin has been averaging closer to 30,000 daily transactions of late. For comparison's sake, payment-processing giants <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/V\">Visa</a></b>&nbsp;and <b>Mastercard</b>&nbsp;handled 700 million transactions daily on a combined basis in 2018.</p>\n<p>To build on this point, Fundera estimated earlier this year that only around 15,200 businesses worldwide accepted Bitcoin. Meanwhile, online business directory Cryptwerk finds that Dogecoin is accepted by 1,400 companies. For context, there are more than 32 million businesses in the U.S., and an estimated 582 million entrepreneurs worldwide. There simply isn't the broad-based adoption that's being hyped by cryptocurrency supporters.</p>\n<p>At the same time, blockchain technology is caught in a Catch-22. Blockchain being the transparent and immutable underlying ledger of digital currencies that logs transactions. No business is willing to abandon time-tested infrastructure in favor of blockchain until it's demonstrated that blockchain can be scaled in the real world. At the same time, there won't be any evidence that blockchain is revolutionary if no businesses are willing to be an early stage guinea pig, so to speak.</p>\n<p>History unequivocally shows that all bubbles eventually burst, without exception. That's the fate awaiting cryptocurrencies.</p>\n<h2>Dump digital currencies in favor of this fast-growing trio</h2>\n<p>Rather than put your money to work in an asset class that's being driven by hype and emotion, my suggestion would be to buy the following trio of supercharged stocks. If you buy stakes in innovative businesses whose products and services have growing real-world application, and you hold these stakes for long periods of time, you'll very likely get rich.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/16ca48e46c5ed915bdfaeb115d44e553\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Etsy</h2>\n<p>To begin with, e-commerce platform <b>Etsy</b> (NASDAQ:ETSY) will have long-term investors forgetting all about the volatility and hype associated with digital currencies.</p>\n<p>To state the obvious, Etsy was a clear winner of the coronavirus pandemic. With people stuck in their homes, many turned online to buy basic-need and discretionary goods. For Etsy, this included a healthy uptick in sales from facial coverings. But the Etsy platform has <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE\">one</a> key advantage that not even <b>Amazon</b>&nbsp;looks to be a threat to: personalization.</p>\n<p>Etsy's platform is built on the idea of putting customers in contact with small merchants who can, if needed, customize their order. Etsy's collection of merchants focuses on personal engagement and uniqueness that shoppers simply won't find on bigger e-commerce platforms. The proof is in the pudding that Etsy's platform is resonating with shoppers. Habitual buyer spending -- those who purchased at least six separate times totaling more than $200, in aggregate, over the trailing year -- has been rocketing higher. Habitual buyers spent 205% more in the first quarter of 2021 than they did in the prior-year quarter.</p>\n<p>Since Etsy generates the bulk of its revenue from merchant ads, the company has also been aggressively reinvesting in its platform to streamline searches and keep users engaged. Last year, it introduced listing videos to promote products, and it's been giving its smaller merchants greater access to analytic tools.</p>\n<p>It's not out of the question that Etsy triples its annual revenue by mid-decade.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/95488cfb7d1265a9ff2f104768cae97b\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"464\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<h2>Sea Limited</h2>\n<p>Another supercharged growth stock that can make investors rich is Singapore-based <b>Sea Limited</b> (NYSE:SE). Even though Sea is far from inexpensive, the premium you'd be paying takes into account that it has three exceptionally fast-growing operating segments.</p>\n<p>For the time being, Sea is generating virtually all of its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) from its gaming division. Similar to online shopping, gaming benefited notably from people being stuck in their homes. Since Sea's mobile games target global audiences, and the pandemic is nowhere near over in many parts of the world, demand for gaming entertainment will likely remain robust. Over the past year (through the end of March), quarterly active paying users grew by 124%, with 12.3% of the company's total gamers now paying to play.</p>\n<p>Over the long run, Sea's crown jewel should be its e-commerce platform Shopee, which is consistently the most-popular shopping download in Southeastern Asia, and is gaining significant traction in Brazil. With a focus on emerging markets and regions where the middle class is growing at an incredible rate, Shopee saw gross orders jump 153% in the first quarter, with the gross merchandise value of these orders doubling to $12.6 billion. With more businesses than ever shifting their data online and into the cloud due to the pandemic, the importance of protecting enterprise and consumer data is greater than ever before. In short, demand for third-party cybersecurity solutions providers is soaring.</p>\n<p>While there is no shortage of cybersecurity specialists to choose from, what sets CrowdStrike apart is its cloud-native Falcon platform. Being built in the cloud, and relying on artificial intelligence, Falcon oversees approximately 6 trillion events each week. In other words, some folks view tokens like Bitcoin and Dogecoin as the future global currencies, but virtually nothing has suggested that this will come to fruition.\nThe reality is that digital currencies are virtually useless outside of a cryptocurrency exchange. Bitcoin has been stuck handling 250,000 to 300,000 transactions daily for years, while Dogecoin has been averaging closer to 30,000 daily transactions of late. For comparison's sake, payment-processing giants Visa and Mastercard handled 700 million transactions daily on a combined basis in 2018.\nTo build on this point, Fundera estimated earlier this year that only around 15,200 businesses worldwide accepted Bitcoin. Meanwhile, online business directory Cryptwerk finds that Dogecoin is accepted by 1,400 companies. For context, there are more than 32 million businesses in the U.S., and an estimated 582 million entrepreneurs worldwide. There simply isn't the broad-based adoption that's being hyped by cryptocurrency supporters.\nAt the same time, blockchain technology is caught in a Catch-22. Blockchain being the transparent and immutable underlying ledger of digital currencies that logs transactions. No business is willing to abandon time-tested infrastructure in favor of blockchain until it's demonstrated that blockchain can be scaled in the real world. At the same time, there won't be any evidence that blockchain is revolutionary if no businesses are willing to be an early stage guinea pig, so to speak.\nHistory unequivocally shows that all bubbles eventually burst, without exception. That's the fate awaiting cryptocurrencies.\nDump digital currencies in favor of this fast-growing trio\nRather than put your money to work in an asset class that's being driven by hype and emotion, my suggestion would be to buy the following trio of supercharged stocks. If you buy stakes in innovative businesses whose products and services have growing real-world application, and you hold these stakes for long periods of time, you'll very likely get rich.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nEtsy\nTo begin with, e-commerce platform Etsy (NASDAQ:ETSY) will have long-term investors forgetting all about the volatility and hype associated with digital currencies.\nTo state the obvious, Etsy was a clear winner of the coronavirus pandemic. With people stuck in their homes, many turned online to buy basic-need and discretionary goods. For Etsy, this included a healthy uptick in sales from facial coverings. But the Etsy platform has one key advantage that not even Amazon looks to be a threat to: personalization.\nEtsy's platform is built on the idea of putting customers in contact with small merchants who can, if needed, customize their order. Etsy's collection of merchants focuses on personal engagement and uniqueness that shoppers simply won't find on bigger e-commerce platforms. The proof is in the pudding that Etsy's platform is resonating with shoppers. Habitual buyer spending -- those who purchased at least six separate times totaling more than $200, in aggregate, over the trailing year -- has been rocketing higher. Habitual buyers spent 205% more in the first quarter of 2021 than they did in the prior-year quarter.\nSince Etsy generates the bulk of its revenue from merchant ads, the company has also been aggressively reinvesting in its platform to streamline searches and keep users engaged. Even though Sea is far from inexpensive, the premium you'd be paying takes into account that it has three exceptionally fast-growing operating segments.\nFor the time being, Sea is generating virtually all of its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) from its gaming division. Similar to online shopping, gaming benefited notably from people being stuck in their homes. Since Sea's mobile games target global audiences, and the pandemic is nowhere near over in many parts of the world, demand for gaming entertainment will likely remain robust. Over the past year (through the end of March), quarterly active paying users grew by 124%, with 12.3% of the company's total gamers now paying to play.\nOver the long run, Sea's crown jewel should be its e-commerce platform Shopee, which is consistently the most-popular shopping download in Southeastern Asia, and is gaining significant traction in Brazil. With a focus on emerging markets and regions where the middle class is growing at an incredible rate, Shopee saw gross orders jump 153% in the first quarter, with the gross merchandise value of these orders doubling to $12.6 billion. The series has been a hit. The general consensus is that while I expect large-cap tech to continue to have success in growing earnings, tech valuations are clearly outrunning earnings growth, meaning that the 20+ percent returns that investors are accustomed to in tech are unsustainable. Most large-cap stocks I've analyzed are offering 5 to 8 percent annual returns at current prices due to the remarkable surge in valuations since the start of the pandemic. Next up is the quintessential 21st-century growth stock, Amazon (AMZN).</p>\n<p>For this article, we're going to take it a step further and ask where Amazon stock will be in 10 years, in a nod to the company's remarkable growth. Since the start of the 21st century, Amazon has moved a substantial portion of commerce in the Western world from brick-and-mortar retailers to the internet, and built a massive cloud computing business from scratch. After splitting its stock several times in the late 1990s, Amazon went from about $80 per share in 2000 down to a low of less than $6 in the dot-com bust, to today's price of nearly $3500 per share. To understand where Amazon is going, first, you have to understand how it got to where it is.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e7a341c7377e4554805faee634850885\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"435\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\">Data by YCharts</p>\n<p>I would argue that there have been 3 phases in Amazon's history.</p>\n<ul>\n <li>The first phase was the dot-com boom and bust. At the time, Amazon was a small company that mostly sold books, music, and videos online. Wall Street got behind the stock, and money started pouring in. Media entrepreneur Henry Blodget, then an analyst for Oppenheimer,famously put a price target that was nearly double what the stock was trading for, only to see the stock surge through his price target in weeks. 2000 rolled around, the Fed pulled the punch bowl, and Amazon stock soon fell over 90 percent. In the first phase, investors clearly got overexcited about the prospects of Amazon and many other internet stocks. Amazon wouldn't take out the old high for nearly a decade, while many other dot-com companies simply disappeared.</li>\n <li>The second phase started in 2006 with the introduction of cloud computing. AWS had existed in limited formsince the early 2000s, but the launch of the cloud storage business by Andy Jassy, then a young executive at Amazon, would become a slow-motion home run as data needs for businesses grew exponentially over the next 15 years. By 2012, AWS revenue was over $1.5 billion. In a watershed moment that year, Netflix (NFLX) CEO Reed Hastings announced plans to move 100 percent of Netflix's infrastructure to AWS. By 2015, revenue hit $5 billion, by 2017, it was nearly $18 billion, and last year's revenue was nearly $50 billion and operating profit from AWS accounted fornearly two-thirds of Amazon's total operating profit. AWS drove Amazon's stock price and will continue to be the key driver in the future. As goes AWS, so goes Amazon.</li>\n <li>The third phase of Amazon's history is the coronavirus pandemic, which has seen a surge in AMZN's share price. With retailers shut down all over the world, Amazon became a lifeline to consumers battling shortages of goods and stay-at-home restrictions, and during the pandemic, Amazon asserted its position as the world's largest retailer. AWS's profits soared during the pandemic over big prior year comparables as companies increasingly turned to the internet to replace the work they used to do at offices. Since the start of the pandemic, Amazon's stock has nearly doubled.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>The question of whether it's too late to buy Amazon can only be answered by evaluating the company's valuation and growth prospects. Amazon is a hard stock to value because it operated at breakeven for many years in its growth phase, but as the company has matured I'm better able to make educated guesses at long-range forecasts for Amazon's prospects. And for Amazon shareholders, the main question now is whether the company can continue to grow earnings at rates close to what it has in the past.</p>\n<p><b>Does Amazon Stock Still Have Room to Grow?</b></p>\n<p>Amazon's share price has risen sharply during the pandemic. There are two schools of thought here.</p>\n<ol>\n <li>The first school of thought is that the pandemic has fundamentally reordered the world, giving an advantage to Amazon that it can continue to press. Under this view, Amazon stock is undervalued.</li>\n <li>The second school of thought is that the coronavirus pandemic priced in future growth for Amazon and other big companies and that this growth will slow. If this is the case and growth slows sufficiently, the previous advances in Amazon's share price are overdone and future returns will be low.</li>\n</ol>\n<p>Amazon trades for63x 2021 earnings and 48x consensus 2022 earnings.This makes the stock very risky if growth comes in below expectations in the future. As you go further out in the future, fewer analysts are willing to publish revenue and profit estimates, but we can get at least 5 sell-side analysts out to 2026, and the numbers until then are impressive. The analyst consensus is for earnings to grow byaround 30 percent annually for the next 5 years!I'm not so sure that growth can be achieved on this scale going forward, although no one knows for sure. The thinking here is that AWS will drive earnings growth, which is very likely to be true. How fast the earnings grow is what will make or break Amazon over the next 5-10 years.</p>\n<p>Interestingly, revenue growth is expected to be slower than earnings growth, averaging in the mid-teens. This is a contradiction that is apparently explained by the fact that analysts expect Amazon's profit margins to sequentially improve, which is not a given when your competitors include Google(NASDAQ:GOOG)(GOOGL) and Microsoft (MSFT).</p>\n<p>With this in mind, this is how fast AWS revenue has grown over the last decade.</p>\n<p><b>Yearly revenue growth rate, AWS</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/454a1a6260ac83154c489246ddf9100b\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"429\"></p>\n<p><i>Source:Statista</i></p>\n<p>As you can see here, AWS revenue growth has slowed over time, but recently ticked up. In addition to revenue, Amazon reports operating profit for AWS but not figures for net income. However, as a whole, Amazon doesn't convert all of its operating income into net income, with the difference going to expenses like depreciation, amortization, and the ~$10 billion in stock options Amazon paid out last year to retain talent. Still, AWS is close to or above thewell-known rule of 40, and every year it stays at or above the rule of 40 Amazon's fundamental value increases. When growth eventually does slow for AWS, Amazon shareholders will be forced to reevaluate how much the stock is worth.</p>\n<p><b>Where Will Amazon Stock Be in 10 Years?</b></p>\n<p>We already know that AWS represents about 2/3rds of Amazon's profit (Amazon is expected to earn $55 EPS in 2021, so I'll assign $36 of that to AWS and $19 to everything else. Amazon doesn't disclose this in their financials so I'm making an educated guess). Let's do some handicapping. Let's say AWS income grows by 25 percent for the next 5 years (i.e. triples in 5 years) and grows 5 percent after, at which point the business is mature. For the rest of Amazon's business, we'll assume it grows at 10 percent for 5 years and 5 percent after.</p>\n<p>Under my forecast, AWS income would grow from $36/share to $110/share in 5 years, while other income would grow to $31/share. In sum, I calculate that Amazon would earn $141/share in 2026, which puts my best-guess estimate above the lowest sell-side earnings estimate but below the median estimate (I previously had estimatedEPS of $150 by 2025 the last time I covered Amazon, this update reflects my new modeling - I'm less sunny on AMZN's prospects the more I dig into its financials).</p>\n<p>In 2031, assuming 5 percent growth from maturity in 2026, my ballpark estimate for Amazon's earnings is $180 per share. As Amazon's growth slows to earth, I would expect the multiple to shrink a bit, to 28x by 2026, and to 25x by 2031. This gets me a new price target for Amazon of roughly $4000 by 2026 and $4500 by 2031. If you think the multiples will be higher on AMZN stock then add a few hundred dollars to both estimates.</p>\n<p>This is indicative of low-to-mid single-digit expected annual returns for Amazon stock. I do indeed think that the law of large numbers will eventually apply to Amazon and that their revenue growth won't continue like this forever. After all, we just came out of a pandemic, which was one of the best possible macro events that could happen to Amazon. Extrapolating future growth for work-from-home stocks when their products were influenced by pandemic demand and government restrictions is not going to match future reality in many cases.</p>\n<p>When you model Amazon's earnings, the future price estimates are very sensitive to the growth rate, which cuts both ways. If Amazon grows earnings faster for several years, the stock will appreciate correspondingly, maybe to $5000 or higher, but if growth slows, the 48x multiple will slowly bleed away, as has happened to thousands of tech companies in the past, and as happened to Amazon itself from 2000 to 2008. Since the start of the pandemic, Amazon's stock has nearly doubled.\n\nThe question of whether it's too late to buy Amazon can only be answered by evaluating the company's valuation and growth prospects. Amazon is a hard stock to value because it operated at breakeven for many years in its growth phase, but as the company has matured I'm better able to make educated guesses at long-range forecasts for Amazon's prospects. And for Amazon shareholders, the main question now is whether the company can continue to grow earnings at rates close to what it has in the past.\nDoes Amazon Stock Still Have Room to Grow?\nAmazon's share price has risen sharply during the pandemic. There are two schools of thought here.\n\nThe first school of thought is that the pandemic has fundamentally reordered the world, giving an advantage to Amazon that it can continue to press. Under this view, Amazon stock is undervalued.\nThe second school of thought is that the coronavirus pandemic priced in future growth for Amazon and other big companies and that this growth will slow. If this is the case and growth slows sufficiently, the previous advances in Amazon's share price are overdone and future returns will be low.\n\nAmazon trades for63x 2021 earnings and 48x consensus 2022 earnings.This makes the stock very risky if growth comes in below expectations in the future. As you go further out in the future, fewer analysts are willing to publish revenue and profit estimates, but we can get at least 5 sell-side analysts out to 2026, and the numbers until then are impressive. The thinking here is that AWS will drive earnings growth, which is very likely to be true. How fast the earnings grow is what will make or break Amazon over the next 5-10 years.\nInterestingly, revenue growth is expected to be slower than earnings growth, averaging in the mid-teens. This is a contradiction that is apparently explained by the fact that analysts expect Amazon's profit margins to sequentially improve, which is not a given when your competitors include Google(NASDAQ:GOOG)(GOOGL) and Microsoft (MSFT).\nWith this in mind, this is how fast AWS revenue has grown over the last decade.\nYearly revenue growth rate, AWS\n\nSource:Statista\nAs you can see here, AWS revenue growth has slowed over time, but recently ticked up. In addition to revenue, Amazon reports operating profit for AWS but not figures for net income. However, as a whole, Amazon doesn't convert all of its operating income into net income, with the difference going to expenses like depreciation, amortization, and the ~$10 billion in stock options Amazon paid out last year to retain talent. Still, AWS is close to or above thewell-known rule of 40, and every year it stays at or above the rule of 40 Amazon's fundamental value increases. When growth eventually does slow for AWS, Amazon shareholders will be forced to reevaluate how much the stock is worth.\nWhere Will Amazon Stock Be in 10 Years?\nWe already know that AWS represents about 2/3rds of Amazon's profit (Amazon is expected to earn $55 EPS in 2021, so I'll assign $36 of that to AWS and $19 to everything else. Amazon doesn't disclose this in their financials so I'm making an educated guess). Let's do some handicapping. Let's say AWS income grows by 25 percent for the next 5 years (i.e. triples in 5 years) and grows 5 percent after, at which point the business is mature. For the rest of Amazon's business, we'll assume it grows at 10 percent for 5 years and 5 percent after.\nUnder my forecast, AWS income would grow from $36/share to $110/share in 5 years, while other income would grow to $31/share. In sum, I calculate that Amazon would earn $141/share in 2026, which puts my best-guess estimate above the lowest sell-side earnings estimate but below the median estimate (I previously had estimatedEPS of $150 by 2025 the last time I covered Amazon, this update reflects my new modeling - I'm less sunny on AMZN's prospects the more I dig into its financials).\nIn 2031, assuming 5 percent growth from maturity in 2026, my ballpark estimate for Amazon's earnings is $180 per share. As Amazon's growth slows to earth, I would expect the multiple to shrink a bit, to 28x by 2026, and to 25x by 2031. This gets me a new price target for Amazon of roughly $4000 by 2026 and $4500 by 2031.
