billion.</p>\n<p>Shares of luxury electric vehicle start-up Lucid Motors are set to make their debut on Monday as the race to populate the world’s roads and highways with electric vehicles continues to heat up.</p>\n<p>Shares of Lucid Motors will debut on the Nasdaq under symbol \"LCID.\" The listing follows the close Friday of the&nbsp;merger between special purpose acquisition company Churchill Capital (<b>CCIV</b>) , a blank check company started by investment banker Michael Klein. Churchill Capital will delist from the New York Stock Exchange.</p>\n<p>The startup is expected to receive about $4.4 billion in cash from the transaction, after expenses, according to reports. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund has invested more than $1 billion in Lucid. It will own about 60% of the company.</p>\n<p>The reverse-merger deal, which faced last-minute challenges being approved due to difficulties communicating to retail investors holding the stock to vote, values Lucid at around $24 billion.</p>\n<p>It also comes six months after Lucidannounced it was joining forces with Churchillin a bid to take on Tesla(<b>TSLA</b>)&nbsp;and other EV makers like Fisker(<b>FSR</b>)&nbsp;in the U.S. and NIO(<b>NIO</b>)&nbsp;and XPeng(<b>XPEV</b>)&nbsp;in China, though Lucid has its sights set directly on Tesla.</p>\n<p>Special-purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs, had been all the rage at the start of the year as companies looked to take advantage of what appeared to be a more streamlined effort to go public. They remain a popular option for raising capital,with 2021 marking a banner year in SPAC deals.</p>\n<p>The Lucid Air has a price tag of around $70,000 after tax credits, while the Air Dream Edition will cost $162,000. Anything Musk does to make buying electrics easier is good for Tesla. Besides, Tesla could make a lot of money by opening its network. Although Tesla didn’t respond to a question about potential pricing, charging won’t be free, and refusing to let others use the system would be like a gas station only servicing Fords. And charging eventually will be as ubiquitous as gas stations.</p>\n<p>Then there’s the free publicity and advertising. Opening up the charging network shows Tesla is interested in overall EV adoption and not just in selling its own vehicles. That’s positive for the brand. The numerator tends to be prior-year (trailing), current-year or next-year (forward) earnings per share.</p>\n<p>Amazon commands a higher multiple, among other reasons, because of the company’s more aggressive growth profile. Wall Street expects the e-commerce giant to increase EPS by a factor of four in the next five years. Apple, on the other hand, is project to “only” double earnings in the same period.</p>\n<p>By 2025, this is what analysts expect of each company’s bottom line, and what the stock’s P/E would be if share prices remained unchanged:</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>Amazon</b>: 2025 EPS of $172.30, for a P/E of<b>20.4</b>times</li>\n <li><b>Apple</b>: fiscal 2025 EPS of $6.30, for a P/E of<b>21.2</b>times</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Given enough time and assuming that current earnings projections are close enough to accurate, Amazon tends to become a less aggressively valued stock by the year. Maybe one day, in the not-too-distant future, shares could even start to look more appealing to value investors.</p>\n<p><b>Which is the best bet?</b></p>\n<p>If Amazon and Apple are valued at roughly the same 2025 P/E, one fair question to ask is: which stock might perform best in the next five years? I can use the earnings multiple as a guide to think through this question.</p>\n<p>From the P/E formula, one can derive the following: future stock price is determined by the company’s earnings delivered (the denominator “E”) and how much investors are willing to pay for those earnings (the valuation multiple). Therefore, in the Amazon vs. Apple race to 2025, whichever does best at delivering EPS above consensus and/or commanding a richer earnings multiple wins.</p>\n<p>Clearly, this is open for debate since the future in uncertain. But I believe that Amazon stock has a better chance of producing higher gains than Apple through 2025.</p>\n<p>First, I find it highly unlikely that AMZN’s earnings multiple will converge from the 60s of today to the low 20s in 2025. This would only be feasible if the company’s growth opportunities dried out quickly, which I am not counting on. On the other hand, Apple’s P/E is more likely to stay around 20 to 25 times, given the more mature profile of the company relative to Amazon.</p>\n<p>This is not to say that I expect Amazon’s P/E to expand from 64 times. The opposite is more likely to happen, as the company ages. But if the stock is valued at, say, 40 times EPS in 2025, Amazon would not even need to deliver results beyond expectations to see its stock price double in five years.</p>\n<p>Regarding consensus, I also think that Amazon can beat expectations by a wider margin than Apple could. The e-commerce giant has been more aggressive at investing back in the business. The green- and brown-field revenue growth opportunities in e-commerce and cloud seem better.</p>\n<p>In addition, Amazon’s margins could expand substantially (see five-year trend below), if or once the company’s online retail business gets closer to maturity. But an increasing number of companies, investment banks, and insiders have proven this tenet to be false. Big stock price gains often come <i>before </i>a company's business model reaches its full potential, and that can raise risk levels without providing any additional reward.</p>\n<p>A name like <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GPRO\">GoPro</a></b> (NASDAQ:GPRO) comes to mind. While no <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> denies it makes the world's very best action cameras, its stock price got ahead of itself in the early to mid-2010s. Yet when ongoing demand for action camera products didn't live up to expectations, investors paid the price. Even with the rally from its early 2020 lows, shares are still trading 90% below their 2014 peak price.</p>\n<p>And that's certainly not the only example of when the market didn't recognize the suggested or implied reward was never going to be realized.</p>\n<h2>Myth 3: I have to pay someone a lot of money to manage my investments</h2>\n<p>Actually, you don't.</p>\n<p>You <i>can</i> pay someone, of course. Money managers and brokerage firms' so-called wrap account will charge you on the order of 1% of your portfolio's value per year. Robo-advisors charge about half of that (or less) for smaller accounts, though there's very little personal customer service to such plans. Both solutions steer your investments, and for the most part, they do a pretty good job of balancing risk and reward.</p>\n<p>But with a little common sense and self-discipline, you can sidestep those fees and manage your own stock portfolio at little or no cost. Most of the reputable online brokers these days offer commission-free trading -- not that you should trade more often simply because it doesn't cost anything to do so.</p>\n<p>There's a lot to be said about picking your own stocks. Aside from learning by starting out conservatively and becoming more aggressive as you gain experience, you might be surprised to find you're doing better than most professionals do for their customers. In its most recent assessment of the industry, Standard &amp; Poor's found that only about one-fourth of large cap mutual funds outperformed the <b>S&amp;P 500</b> over the course of the past five years. The other three-fourths trailed the S&amp;P 500's performance.</p>\n<h2>Myth 4: When I buy a stock, that money is given to the underlying company to grow its business</h2>\n<p>Finally, although most veteran investors (and even newcomers) understand that an investment in a company isn't the transfer of funds from your account to that organization's coffers where it's then spent on growth initiatives. Rather, when you buy a stock -- say <b>Procter &amp; Gamble</b> -- you're buying those shares of P&amp;G from another investor who's more than willing to let go of their stake of the consumer staples giant at the agreed-upon market price. What do they know that you don't? Maybe nothing. Perhaps they're just ready to reduce their risk or take on more risk.</p>\n<p>There's a more important takeaway, however. That is, you can't completely ignore the inherent mispricing stemming from the ongoing auction process. Eventually, a stock is going to become severely overvalued or undervalued, translating into opportunity for you.</p>\n<p>Still, awareness of this backdrop shouldn't distract you from focusing on the long-term bigger picture. The numerator tends to be prior-year (trailing), current-year or next-year (forward) earnings per share.</p>\n<p>Amazon commands a higher multiple, among other reasons, because of the company’s more aggressive growth profile. Wall Street expects the e-commerce giant to increase EPS by a factor of four in the next five years. Apple, on the other hand, is project to “only” double earnings in the same period.</p>\n<p>By 2025, this is what analysts expect of each company’s bottom line, and what the stock’s P/E would be if share prices remained unchanged:</p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>Amazon</b>: 2025 EPS of $172.30, for a P/E of<b>20.4</b>times</li>\n <li><b>Apple</b>: fiscal 2025 EPS of $6.30, for a P/E of<b>21.2</b>times</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Given enough time and assuming that current earnings projections are close enough to accurate, Amazon tends to become a less aggressively valued stock by the year. Maybe one day, in the not-too-distant future, shares could even start to look more appealing to value investors.</p>\n<p><b>Which is the best bet?</b></p>\n<p>If Amazon and Apple are valued at roughly the same 2025 P/E, one fair question to ask is: which stock might perform best in the next five years? I can use the earnings multiple as a guide to think through this question.</p>\n<p>From the P/E formula, one can derive the following: future stock price is determined by the company’s earnings delivered (the denominator “E”) and how much investors are willing to pay for those earnings (the valuation multiple). Therefore, in the Amazon vs. Apple race to 2025, whichever does best at delivering EPS above consensus and/or commanding a richer earnings multiple wins.</p>\n<p>Clearly, this is open for debate since the future in uncertain. But I believe that Amazon stock has a better chance of producing higher gains than Apple through 2025.</p>\n<p>First, I find it highly unlikely that AMZN’s earnings multiple will converge from the 60s of today to the low 20s in 2025. This would only be feasible if the company’s growth opportunities dried out quickly, which I am not counting on. On the other hand, Apple’s P/E is more likely to stay around 20 to 25 times, given the more mature profile of the company relative to Amazon.</p>\n<p>This is not to say that I expect Amazon’s P/E to expand from 64 times. The opposite is more likely to happen, as the company ages. But if the stock is valued at, say, 40 times EPS in 2025, Amazon would not even need to deliver results beyond expectations to see its stock price double in five years.</p>\n<p>Regarding consensus, I also think that Amazon can beat expectations by a wider margin than Apple could. The e-commerce giant has been more aggressive at investing back in the business. The green- and brown-field revenue growth opportunities in e-commerce and cloud seem better.</p>\n<p>In addition, Amazon’s margins could expand substantially (see five-year trend below), if or once the company’s online retail business gets closer to maturity. The addition of ARM’s semiconductor IP portfolio should add another arrow to the quiver, especially when considering ARM’s large exposure to the mobile device market.\nSince the deal still needs to be approved by the U.S., UK., European and Chinese regulators, it is uncertain whether the acquisition will eventually go through. In fact, Evercore's C.J. Muse thinks investors have a downbeat view regarding the deal’s prospects.\n“We continue to think the market views the probability of a merger here as very low, which means there is very little of the benefit from ARM embedded in NVDA’s shares,” the 5-star analyst said. “Thus, we continue to view a successful completion of the ARM transaction as a free call option to investors.”\nIt’s not only Muse who is trying to convince investors they will benefit from the merger. Nvidia has been on the front foot trying to explain why an Nvidia/Arm pairing would ultimately benefit ARM’s customers and investors, alike.\nMuse laid out the pitch, explaining that as a data-oriented economy becomes more prevalent across the globe, increasingly sophisticated frameworks are continuing to sprout. And with each passing day, as the number of end applications gets pushed further ahead by this continuous innovation, it is “becoming more difficult for ARM to address these growth vectors on its own.”\n“That is why it needs NVDA,” says Muse “Who can offer a resource-rich platform of GPU/DPU hardware and an accelerated software stack – a great complementary to ARM’s world class portfolio of CPU IP.”\nWhat’s more, the cost of this technological innovation can be reduced, by ARM customers being able to leverage NVDA’s pre-built platform to “invest R&D dollars in more specialized tasks.”\nAs for the regulatory hurdles, Muse says Nvidia remains upbeat on gaining approval from all geographies, “in particular, the UK and China.”\nAs such, Nvidia remains a \"top pick\" for Muse, who has an Outperform (i.e. Buy) rating for the shares and a $750 price target. Muse might be an Nvidia bull, but his current price target implies shares will remain range-bound for the time being. The analysts’ average price target is $740, indicating minimal downside for the shares over the next 12-months. However, somewhat confusingly, rating wise, almost all are positive. Barring one Hold, the stock’s Strong Buy consensus rating is based on 27 Buys. It will be interesting to see whether the analysts downgrade their ratings or upgrade price targets over the coming months.
