Disruptions in Malaysia threaten to prolong uncertainty over chip supply well into next year, dashing hopes of relief in the second half of 2021.
\n
The supply crunch in Malaysia, caused primarily by staff shortages linked to virus-control measures combined with a sharp surge in global demand, poses a new problem for the auto industry. For the first half of this year, shortages largely stemmed from companies miscalculating the pace of economic recoveries and not ordering enough parts. Now they can’t always get the parts they need because Covid-19 outbreaks are denting factory output.
\n
“It’s a bit like a game of whack-a-mole,” said Ravi Vijayaraghavan, a Singapore-based partner at the consulting firm Bain & Co. specializing in semiconductors. “We think we have supply sorted out, and then a problem suddenly pops up somewhere else.”
\n
Some of the world’s leading car makers including Toyota Motor Corp. , Ford Motor Co. , General Motors Co. and Nissan Motor Co. have disclosed major production cuts due largely to chip shortages from factories in Malaysia. Ford suspended work for about a week at an F-150 plant in the Kansas City, Mo., area and a Fiesta factory in Cologne, Germany because of missing parts, while Toyota said it would cut global production by around 40% in September. General Motors said it expects to make 100,000 fewer vehicles in North America in the second half of the year.
\n
The problems in Malaysia stem from the worst Covid-19 surge the country has seen since the start of the pandemic. The nation of around 32 million people has had more than 1.6 million reported cases and 15,000 deaths to date, more than half of them this summer.
\n
On June 1, the government imposed a nationwide lockdown to stem the spread and protect its buckling healthcare system, but it designated electronics companies as essential businesses and allowed them to operate at 60% capacity. As vaccination rates picked up, factories were eventually allowed to resume full operations, but they have been playing catch-up ever since and disruptions have persisted.
\n
Even minor disruptions can dramatically shift output and delivery timelines. In June, the Malaysian chip maker Globetronics Technology Bhd., which assembles sensors for a U.S. smartphone maker as well as basic car components, voluntarily closed two of its factories for several days after three workers tested positive for Covid-19.
\n
It took about four weeks to normalize deliveries, according to Chief Executive Heng Huck Lee, who had back-to-back calls with customers as he and his team tried to shuffle around orders without causing a domino effect of delays.
\n
Mr. Heng said that employee safety was his priority and that production at the two factories was halted completely for two days to sanitize them from top to bottom and flush out the air several times over. Hundreds of workers were isolated.
\n
“This wasn’t a disaster in terms of revenue, but it caused disruption,” Mr. Heng said. “When your workforce is lower, it kind of cascades down the line.”
\n
Mr. Vijayaraghavan said chip manufacturing relies on a precarious model designed to keep costs low by holding minimal inventory and spreading assembly across several markets specializing in processes that are hard to relocate in a pinch. “There’s very little room for error, so whenever there’s any disruption you see it all the way through to the end product because there’s just no slack in the system,” he said.
\n
Malaysia is a major hub for packaging, a labor-intensive process of combining basic elements into functioning components and testing them for quality before they are shipped abroad and made into end-use products. About 7% of the global supply of semiconductors goes through the country at some point, according to the U.S.-based Semiconductor Industry Association. The U.S. imports more chips directly from Malaysia than from any other country in the world, the group said.
\n
Problems in Malaysia started last year amid factory shutdowns caused by the pandemic, though they weren’t as consequential because, at the time, global chip supply appeared more stable and demand was lower. But by early 2021, as economies started waking up, shortages were magnified by soaring demand for all manner of devices that require the chips. Then came the unexpected blows to two industry juggernauts: a fire at a major plant on the outskirts of Tokyo in March and a drought in Taiwan that slowed the chips’ water-intensive production in April. Covid-19 cases started ticking up in Malaysia around the same time, compounding the problems.
\n
The demand has continued to rise. More chips have been needed for medical devices such as portable ultrasounds, thermometers and ventilators as healthcare systems around the world have rushed to build capacity. Prolonged lockdowns fueled demand for home appliances and personal electronics including tablets and videogame consoles. Auto makers hoped to seize on a rise in consumer spending as Western economies stepped up vaccinations and emerged from stagnation.
\n
“Even if you’re running at 100% capacity, supply is still not enough to meet demand, and lead time will increase,” said Wong Siew Hai, president of the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association, a business group formed in January in response to challenges caused by the pandemic. The problem, Mr. Wong said, is that demand exceeds full capacity while most factories are still running below their potential. He estimates that pandemic-related capacity constraints translated to hundreds of millions of dollars of “missed opportunities” in the country this year.
\n
In theory, Malaysia’s semiconductor sector should be running optimally by late August as worker vaccination rates for most companies reach the 80% threshold required to resume full operations, Mr. Wong said. In practice, factory output could be uneven for the next two or three quarters, until the entire country reaches a higher vaccination rate and transmission slows. Malaysia has fully vaccinated almost 45% of its population, according to Our World in Data.
\n
Meanwhile, factories might be forced to shut down temporarily because of breakthrough infections among vaccinated staff, or they might have sporadic shortages related to workers being quarantined after coming into contact with an infected person, even if the workers are fully vaccinated.
\n
Staff shortages due to quarantine requirements are a persistent problem not just on the factory floor, but for workers in related industries, such as truck drivers and cleaners. The staff shortages could cause significant disruptions in the weeks ahead, possibly longer, according to David Lacey, president of Frepenca, an industry group based in Malaysia’s industrial hub of Penang, where many semiconductor factories are located. “We’re starting to see industry capacity impacted by worker shortages, and the worker shortages are caused by quarantine rules,” Mr. Lacey said. “We need to keep the rules in sync with the situation, and the rules in place now are the same ones we had pre-vaccination.”
\n
Chip makers said the situation remains dynamic and could be volatile into next year. A spokesperson for Infineon Technologies AG , a German semiconductor supplier that manufactures products in Malaysia, said the company expects shortages to persist into 2022, as demand remains high and significantly outstrips supply.
\n
“Today’s semiconductor supply chain is complex to the degree that you may have to go through multiple locations in multiple countries in multiple regions just to get this one piece, this one tiny part of your final product,” said Mr. Heng, of Globetronics. “But we’ll figure out a way to overcome this. We’re all still in learning mode.”
\n

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Covid-19 Surge in Malaysia Threatens to Prolong Global Chip Shortage
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nCovid-19 Surge in Malaysia Threatens to Prolong Global Chip Shortage\n
\n
\n\n\n2021-08-30 19:43 GMT+8 WSJ\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
SINGAPORE—A surge of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia, a little-known but critical link in the semiconductor supply chain, has opened a new front in the battle to fix manufacturing woes that have rippled ...
\nWeb Link\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"F":"福特汽车","TM":"丰田汽车","GM":"通用汽车"},"source_url":"https://www.wsj.com/articles/covid-19-surge-in-malaysia-threatens-to-prolong-global-chip-shortage-11630234802?cx_testId=242&cx_testVariant=cx_3&cx_artPos=1#cxrecs_s","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1199240853","content_text":"SINGAPORE—A surge of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia, a little-known but critical link in the semiconductor supply chain, has opened a new front in the battle to fix manufacturing woes that have rippled across industries during a global shortage of computing chips.\nThe Southeast Asia nation is one of the world’s top destinations for assembly and testing of the devices that control smartphones, car engines and medical equipment. Anyone can go to Airbnb.org/refugees to support the effort,\" she said.\nAirbnb will waive all fees for those existing Airbnb hosts and anyone else who has extra space to temporarily house refugees at a discounted price or free of charge, according to a press release. Those who cannot rent out or provide free space can also donate to Airbnb to support the effort.\n\"In many cases, we have heard from people who want to offer their space free of charge,\" the company said in a press release. \"The response has been overwhelming and today we’re sharing more details on how people can help us expand on efforts to meet this unprecedented need for temporary, emergency stays for refugees arriving from Afghanistan.\"\nAirbnb partnered with International Rescue Committee, HIAS and Church World Service to make the housing program possible.\nApproximately 25,000 refugees have stayed in Airbnb rentals over the past four years, the rental service said.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":953,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":810269386,"gmtCreate":1629981307845,"gmtModify":1676530191046,"author":{"id":"4087475222144080","authorId":"4087475222144080","name":"AuroraJ","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a0c9715bb8ca251a5197d8ed49713ec0","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087475222144080","authorIdStr":"4087475222144080"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Not now perhaps ? Here are three ways to play the space without drilling for oil.","content":"

The world is focused on reducing carbon emissions, and the energy sector is filled with low-hanging fruit in that effort. That means oil drillers are in society's crosshairs. But there's a complex chain in the sector that gets these fuels from the ground to where they are eventually used. And since demand for oil, even in the most optimistic clean energy projections, is expected to remain material for years to come, there is still investment merit in the energy space -- if you focus on the right niche. Here are three high-yield pipeline owners that deserve close attention today.
\n
1. Shifting gears
\n
Enterprise Products Partners LP (NYSE:EPD) is a midstream-focused master limited partnership. It offers an 8.3% distribution yield backed by 22 consecutive annual increases. The company owns a massive collection of largely fee-based pipelines, storage, processing, and transportation assets that would be impossible to recreate. And it has a history of being financially conservative.
\n

\n
\n
What's interesting about Enterprise today is its increasing focus on chemicals and refining. Nearly 80% of its $3.1 billion capital spending plan will be spent in these two spaces. It is going down this road because it expects demand for these products to continue growing for years to come. Meanwhile, it has material exposure to natural gas, which is expected to see increased demand as the world shifts away from coal. In other words, Enterprise is positioning itself to support the most desirable energy niches. But the anti-carbon sentiment in the market has helped to put downward pressure on its units, pushing its yield is toward the high end of its historical range, suggesting shares are relatively cheap. In fairness, there are other negatives to consider here, including meager distribution growth of late and the complexity of the MLP structure, but with such a large yield investors are being well compensated for these wrinkles given Enterprise's long and successful history.
\n
2. Similar, but different
\n
Kinder Morgan (NYSE:KMI) shares many traits with Enterprise, as it, too, owns midstream infrastructure that is irreplaceable. And with a similar toll-taking business model, the ups and downs of energy prices aren't a huge deal. That said, Kinder Morgan had historically taken a more aggressive approach with its balance sheet. That got the company in trouble in 2016 when it was forced to cut its dividend so it could put that cash to use on growth projects. Income investors that prize consistency will probably be more comfortable with one of the other names here.
\n
But Kinder Morgan has made great strides to win investors back. It has returned to dividend growth, increasing its disbursement annually since 2018. It has also worked to reduce its reliance on debt, trimming its debt-to-EBITDA ratio from over 9 times to just 5.1 times (for reference, Enterprise's debt to EBITDA ratio is roughly 4 times). In other words, it's a bellwether name trying to mend its ways. With a 6.8% yield, investors with a bit more risk tolerance might find it of interest. Notably, it is not an MLP, which might appeal to investors that prize simplicity.
\n

\n
EPD Financial Debt to EBITDA (TTM) data by YCharts
\n
3. Getting ready for the future
\n
The last name here is Canadian midstream giant Enbridge (NYSE:ENB), which, like Enterprise and Kinder Morgan, owns a massive collection of energy infrastructure assets. Its oil and natural gas pipelines make up 54% and 29% of EBITDA, respectively. The rest of the business is made up of a natural gas utility (14% of EBITDA) and renewable power (3%). Clearly, moving oil and natural gas are at the core of the company's business, but it is also shifting in other directions. Specifically, natural gas is displacing dirtier oil, among other higher-cost options, for home heating in its utility operation, and the company is busy building offshore wind farms in Europe that should grow its clean energy bonafides over time.
\n

\n
EPD Dividend Per Share (Quarterly) data by YCharts
\n
Enbridge has a history of using leverage more aggressively than peers, so investors should monitor its balance sheet. However, the company has increased its dividend annually for 26 consecutive years, suggesting it has managed leverage well over time.
\n
Looking forward, the company believes it has enough capital spending opportunities to support 5% to 7% distributable cash flow growth for many years to come. The dividend will likely increase at a similar rate. Offering a 7.1% yield, dividend growth investors will probably find Enbridge the most interesting name here. That said, as a Canadian company, there are tax withholding issues to consider, and exchange rates impact what U.S. investors receive in the way of dividends.
\n
This change will take time
\n
There is no question that the energy sector is in a transitional period, with the end goal being an increase in the use of clean energy. But the shift will take years to complete, and midstream giants Enterprise, Kinder Morgan, and Enbridge all have robust businesses to support big yields today and in the days ahead. If you want to put some cash to work in dividend-paying stocks, each is worth a closer look.
\n
Enterprise is probably the best option for conservative folks. Kinder Morgan might be attractive to those willing to excuse past transgressions given improved recent performance. And Enbridge is a good alternative for dividend growth investors that want a bit of a clean energy hedge.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Got $5,000? Today, the Amazon Maven breaks down three of the most recent takes on AMZN from Wall Street equity researchers and experts.
\n
Since July, Amazon stock owners have seen their shares drop while investors reset their expectations on e-commerce. Online retail has failed to maintain momentum in a post-pandemic environment, as consumer shopping habits have shifted closer to brick-and-mortar in 2021.
\n
As the main player in US e-commerce, Amazon benefited from a sharp, but in part temporary consumption shift to the online channel in 2020. But with restrictions eased,Amazon’s Q2 report showed that aggressive growth rates may not be sustainable.
\n
As physical stores gradually reopen, what will happen to Amazon’s financial performance? And what should investors expect of AMZN stock? Today, the Amazon Maven looks at a few theses.
\n
Figure 1: Amazon's headquarters in Seattle, WA.
\n
e-Commerce: the pandemic outlier
\n
As the Amazon Maven has recently pointed out, Wall Street might have gotten carried away by Amazon’s 2020 results and projected unrealistic expectations for 2021. Because the COVID-19 crisis has scaled back, astronomic growth projections had to be readjusted. As a result, some fund managers chose to shift their portfolio allocations as well.
\n
In its Q2 2021 investor letter, investment firm Nelson Capital Management shared its views for Amazon stock. The quote below does not necessarily paint a bearish picture for Amazon, but a less bullish one for the current year instead.
\n
\n \"In the consumer discretionary sector, we trimmed pandemic winners in favor of companies we believe will outperform in a recovery period. We reduced our position in Amazon following its stellar performance through the pandemic. Though we believe online shopping is here to stay, we think some portion of consumer wallet share will transition to services and experiences.\"\n
\n
The longer-term perspective
\n
Despite having disappointed analysts' expectations in Q2, Amazon’s long-term fundamentals are arguably as solid as they have ever been. Bezos’ behemoth is not only a leader in fast-growing markets, but it also has a competent management team that has been executing as strongly as possible.
\n
In a recently published analysis piece, boutique investment firm Livy Investment Research concluded that the e-commerce giant has its sails well adjusted for the journey ahead.
\n
\n “Combined with society’s increasing reliance on e-commerce and demand for cloud computing infrastructure in the ongoing transition to digital, which are favorable trends to Amazon’s anchor businesses – Amazon.com and AWS cloud services – the company is slated to lead with promising uptrends in the next five years and beyond.”\n
\n
Inflation is coming
\n
Jim Cramer has a bit of a hot take on Amazon stock. As the possibility of a sharp increase in consumer prices remains on the table, concerning some analysts, the Mad Money host believes that investors should focus on companies that have pricing power over their competitors.
\n
Below is what Mr. Cramer had to say about Amazon and other Big Techs:
\n
\n “When you try to think of what’s working in this market... Today, the Amazon Maven breaks down three of the most recent takes on AMZN from Wall Street equity researchers and experts.\nSince July, Amazon stock owners have seen their shares drop while investors reset their expectations on e-commerce. Online retail has failed to maintain momentum in a post-pandemic environment, as consumer shopping habits have shifted closer to brick-and-mortar in 2021.\nAs the main player in US e-commerce, Amazon benefited from a sharp, but in part temporary consumption shift to the online channel in 2020. But with restrictions eased,Amazon’s Q2 report showed that aggressive growth rates may not be sustainable.\nAs physical stores gradually reopen, what will happen to Amazon’s financial performance? And what should investors expect of AMZN stock? Today, the Amazon Maven looks at a few theses.\nFigure 1: Amazon's headquarters in Seattle, WA.\ne-Commerce: the pandemic outlier\nAs the Amazon Maven has recently pointed out, Wall Street might have gotten carried away by Amazon’s 2020 results and projected unrealistic expectations for 2021. Because the COVID-19 crisis has scaled back, astronomic growth projections had to be readjusted. As a result, some fund managers chose to shift their portfolio allocations as well.\nIn its Q2 2021 investor letter, investment firm Nelson Capital Management shared its views for Amazon stock. The quote below does not necessarily paint a bearish picture for Amazon, but a less bullish one for the current year instead.\n\n \"In the consumer discretionary sector, we trimmed pandemic winners in favor of companies we believe will outperform in a recovery period. We reduced our position in Amazon following its stellar performance through the pandemic. Though we believe online shopping is here to stay, we think some portion of consumer wallet share will transition to services and experiences.\"\n\nThe longer-term perspective\nDespite having disappointed analysts' expectations in Q2, Amazon’s long-term fundamentals are arguably as solid as they have ever been. Bezos’ behemoth is not only a leader in fast-growing markets, but it also has a competent management team that has been executing as strongly as possible.\nIn a recently published analysis piece, boutique investment firm Livy Investment Research concluded that the e-commerce giant has its sails well adjusted for the journey ahead.\n\n “Combined with society’s increasing reliance on e-commerce and demand for cloud computing infrastructure in the ongoing transition to digital, which are favorable trends to Amazon’s anchor businesses – Amazon.com and AWS cloud services – the company is slated to lead with promising uptrends in the next five years and beyond.”\n\nInflation is coming\nJim Cramer has a bit of a hot take on Amazon stock. As the possibility of a sharp increase in consumer prices remains on the table, concerning some analysts, the Mad Money host believes that investors should focus on companies that have pricing power over their competitors.\nBelow is what Mr. Cramer had to say about Amazon and other Big Techs:\n\n “When you try to think of what’s working in this market... I want you to ask yourself, would you be insensitive to a price increase if the company put one through? [What are] the companies that can raise prices without infuriating you? Go buy their stocks.”\n\nThe Amazon Maven’s view\nAfter overestimating Amazon’s growth in 2021, it is understandable that analysts would turn cautious in the short term as to avoid making the same mistake again.\nStill, we point out that the consensus view on AMZN stock is consistent with the company’s more bullish, longer-term narrative. Even the most pessimistic of analysts have maintained their buy ratings on the stock after Q2 earnings, underscoring the idea that AMZN is probably a good stock to have in most buy-and-hold portfolios.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":850,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":833307570,"gmtCreate":1629203145590,"gmtModify":1676529964320,"author":{"id":"4087475222144080","authorId":"4087475222144080","name":"AuroraJ","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a0c9715bb8ca251a5197d8ed49713ec0","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087475222144080","authorIdStr":"4087475222144080"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Such a longgg lists ??","listText":"Such a longgg lists ??","text":"Such a longgg lists ??","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/833307570","repostId":"1115558959","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":456,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":839921291,"gmtCreate":1629118073213,"gmtModify":1676529935776,"author":{"id":"4087475222144080","authorId":"4087475222144080","name":"AuroraJ","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a0c9715bb8ca251a5197d8ed49713ec0","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087475222144080","authorIdStr":"4087475222144080"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Fall 84% now but will shoot up to 840% soon! ? In the close to 17 months since the widely followed S&P 500 bottomed out during the coronavirus crash in March 2020, the index has doubled in value. Time and again, patience begets profits on Wall Street.
\n
However, it's also common knowledge that not every stock is going to be a winner. According to Wall Street analysts and investment firms, there are three high-flying stocks that could lose anywhere from 53% to 84% of their value over the coming year, based on the consensus price target for each company.
\n
Moderna: Implied downside of 53%
\n
First up is skyrocketing biotech stock Moderna, Inc., which has gained almost 1,900% since the beginning of 2020. Even after pulling back more than 20% from its intraday high last week, Moderna's share price would have to fall by another 53% just to hit the consensus price target of $184.92.
\n
As you can probably guess, the reason Moderna has ascended to the heavens is the success of its emergency-use authorized (EUA) coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine, mRNA-1273. In clinical trials, Moderna's vaccine candidate led to a vaccine efficacy (VE) of about 94%. With the exception of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, which presented with a 95% VE, no other EUA vaccines have come close on the efficacy front.
\n
The rise of the COVID-19 delta variant has been another major boon for Moderna. The transmissibility of delta has lifted vaccination rates in a number of developed countries, and it encouraged the U.S. Food and Drug Administration toauthorize a booster shotfor those people with compromised immune systems.
\n
Ultimately, Moderna's skyrocketing share price appears to indicate that things could worsen before they get better on the COVID-19 front, and that booster shots will offer a beefier stream of revenue than once predicted.
\n
However, the issue with Moderna's valuation is twofold. First, competition for COVID-19 vaccinations is increasing, not decreasing. Novavax is a good bet to receive EUA within the coming months, and Johnson & Johnson shouldn't have any trouble ramping up production of its single-dose vaccine. We'reprobably looking at Moderna's peak revenue year in 2021.
\n
The other issue is mRNA-1273 is Moderna's only marketable drug. A $157 billion market cap based on a single therapy that may or may not have staying powersounds very risky.
\n
Dillard's: Implied downside of 55%
\n
The next high-flying stock might come as a bit of a surprise... department store chain Dillard's. Shares of Dillard's hit an all-time closing high of $196 on Friday, Aug. 13, pushing its market cap north of $4 billion. But according to analysts, which have a consensus price target of $87.33 on the company, this department store could be hitting the clearance rack with a 55% haircut over the next year.
\n
If you're wondering why Dillard's stock is up 625% over the trailing year, itsoperating performance would be a good place to start. The company drastically cut costs in the wake of the pandemic, strongly pushed direct-to-consumer sales, and has tightly managed its inventory. Without these burdensome overhead costs, profits have absolutely skyrocketed over the past two quarters as pent-up demand encouraged consumers to get out of their homes and into retail stores.
\n
Dillard's has done a good job of attempting to boost shareholder value, too. In the 26 weeks, ended July 31, the company repurchased about 1.4 million shares totaling $171 million. This may not sound like a lot, but it reduced the company's outstanding share count by more than 6%.
\n
It's also worth pointing out that Dillard's has a relatively small tradable float, and it's been a fairly heavily short-sold stock. This combination made it the perfect target for a short squeeze.
\n
Despite all these positives, it's important for investors to recognize that retail department stores are generally slow-growing and cyclical. Even though Dillard's year-over-year comparisons are lights-out impressive, its 26-week retail sales for 2021 are only 1% higher than its 26-week retail sales for the comparable period in 2019. Further, comparable-store sales are only 4% higher in 2021 compared to 2019. While gross margin is notably higher, this has more to do with cost-cutting than significant sales traction.
\n
Though Dillard's might defy Wall Street for a bit longer than expected, history suggestsit has no chance to keep up this pace. More than likely, Wall Street's price target will eventually become a reality.
\n
AMC Entertainment: Implied downside of 84%
\n
Sporting the most potential downside, according to Wall Street's consensus price target, is movie theater stock AMC Entertainment. Although it's one of the year's top-performing stocks, AMC would need to decline by 84% from its current share price to hit the consensus target of $5.25 a share.
\n
AMC received a huge boost in January, when the company was able to save itself from bankruptcy by issuing common stock and debt. Short-sellers who'd been betting on additional downside in the company were caught off-guard by AMC's capital raise, which effected a viciousshort squeeze.
\n
Today, AMC's impassioned retail investors share the same goal -- i.e., to see another short squeeze take place. As of July 30, 85.85 million shares were held short, representing almost 17% of the float.
\n
The problem for AMC and its retail investors is that fundamentals always matter, and AMC's operating performance and balance sheet arenothing short of a horror movie. While having increased capacity in its theaters drove sequential quarterly sales higher in the second quarter, it doesn't excuse the fact that AMC has burned through $576.5 million in cash over the past six months or that it's a long way from being profitable.
\n
The balance sheet is a bigger concern. AMC ended June with $5.5 billion in corporate borrowing and had an additional $420 million in deferred rent that needs to be paid. With the company effectively maxing out its share issuances, AMC will be forced to rely on its $1.81 billion in cash and $212 million revolving credit facility to make good on its rent obligations and pay off its debt. With its 2026 and 2027 bonds going for 58% and 62% of par value, the clear implication from bondholders isthere's concern AMC won't remain solvent.
\n
The icing on the cake is we'vewitnessed theatrical exclusivity dwindle. For instance, AMC's agreement with AT&T Inc's Warner Bros. offers only a 45-day exclusivity window, which is down from the traditional 75-day to 90-day period of exclusivity prior to the pandemic.
\n
It may take longer than 12 months, but AMC does look to beheaded back to its February low.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 High-Flying Stocks That May Fall 53% to 84%, According to Wall Street
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 High-Flying Stocks That May Fall 53% to 84%, According to Wall Street\n
\n
\n\n\n2021-08-16 20:27 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Analysts expect these soaring stocks to come crashing back to Earth.\n\nKey Points\n\nThe pandemic and/or short squeezes have treated these three companies very well in 2021.\nThough Wall Street's price ...
\nWeb Link\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"DDS":"狄乐百货","MRNA":"Moderna, Inc.","JNJ":"强生",".SPX":"S&P 500 Index","AMC":"AMC院线"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2021/08/16/3-high-flying-stocks-may-fall-53-to-84-wall-street/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1137437693","content_text":"Analysts expect these soaring stocks to come crashing back to Earth.\n\nKey Points\n\nThe pandemic and/or short squeezes have treated these three companies very well in 2021.\nThough Wall Street's price targets can often be taken with a grain of salt, these are likely on point.\n\nIt's a great time to be an investor. In the 26 weeks, ended July 31, the company repurchased about 1.4 million shares totaling $171 million. This may not sound like a lot, but it reduced the company's outstanding share count by more than 6%.\nIt's also worth pointing out that Dillard's has a relatively small tradable float, and it's been a fairly heavily short-sold stock. This combination made it the perfect target for a short squeeze.\nDespite all these positives, it's important for investors to recognize that retail department stores are generally slow-growing and cyclical. Even though Dillard's year-over-year comparisons are lights-out impressive, its 26-week retail sales for 2021 are only 1% higher than its 26-week retail sales for the comparable period in 2019. Further, comparable-store sales are only 4% higher in 2021 compared to 2019. While gross margin is notably higher, this has more to do with cost-cutting than significant sales traction.\nThough Dillard's might defy Wall Street for a bit longer than expected, history suggestsit has no chance to keep up this pace. More than likely, Wall Street's price target will eventually become a reality.\nAMC Entertainment: Implied downside of 84%\nSporting the most potential downside, according to Wall Street's consensus price target, is movie theater stock AMC Entertainment. Although it's one of the year's top-performing stocks, AMC would need to decline by 84% from its current share price to hit the consensus target of $5.25 a share.\nAMC received a huge boost in January, when the company was able to save itself from bankruptcy by issuing common stock and debt. Short-sellers who'd been betting on additional downside in the company were caught off-guard by AMC's capital raise, which effected a viciousshort squeeze.\nToday, AMC's impassioned retail investors share the same goal -- i.e., to see another short squeeze take place. As of July 30, 85.85 million shares were held short, representing almost 17% of the float.\nThe problem for AMC and its retail investors is that fundamentals always matter, and AMC's operating performance and balance sheet arenothing short of a horror movie. While having increased capacity in its theaters drove sequential quarterly sales higher in the second quarter, it doesn't excuse the fact that AMC has burned through $576.5 million in cash over the past six months or that it's a long way from being profitable.\nThe balance sheet is a bigger concern. With its 2026 and 2027 bonds going for 58% and 62% of par value, the clear implication from bondholders isthere's concern AMC won't remain solvent.\nThe icing on the cake is we'vewitnessed theatrical exclusivity dwindle. For instance, AMC's agreement with AT&T Inc's Warner Bros. offers only a 45-day exclusivity window, which is down from the traditional 75-day to 90-day period of exclusivity prior to the pandemic.\nIt may take longer than 12 months, but AMC does look to beheaded back to its February low.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":367,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":883752545,"gmtCreate":1631276448987,"gmtModify":1676530516263,"author":{"id":"4087475222144080","authorId":"4087475222144080","name":"AuroraJ","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a0c9715bb8ca251a5197d8ed49713ec0","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087475222144080","authorIdStr":"4087475222144080"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Bring it on!
