Although it&nbsp;unloaded its autonomous-vehicle business&nbsp;last year, it has a partnership with self-driving company Aurora Technologies.</p>\n<p>One thing Didi has in common with Uber (and smaller rival Lyft) is that it has also been mostly unprofitable. But it did turn a profit in the first quarter, reporting net income of 5.49 billion rembini ($837 million) on revenue of RMB 42.16 billion ($6.44 billion), up from a loss of RMB 3.97 billion on sales of RMB 20.47 billion the year before. That profit was largely due to its investments.</p>\n<p>After a battle in which Didi and Uber lost a lot of money as they tried to undercut each other in China, Uber sold its Chinese business to Didi for $7 billion in 2016. Uber’s CEO at the time, Travis Kalanick, wrote in a blog post announcing the deal: “Uber and Didi Chuxing are investing billions of dollars in China and both companies have yet to turn a profit there.”</p>\n<p>Uber retained a 12.8% stake in Didi, though, which will be reduced to a 12% stake after the IPO. That’s the second-largest stake in the company behind SoftBank Group’s 21.5% in equity ahead of the IPO. Didi also established what it calls a “SWAT team” to respond to safety incidents. Four such shares represent one class A ordinary share. The company announced on Wednesday morning that it had increased the size of the deal; it had planned on offering 288 million shares.\nAt $14 a share, Didi would have a $67 billion market capitalization. On a fully diluted basis, Didi’s valuation rises to about $73 billion\nThe Beijing company has raised $4 billion in the offering. The shares will start trading on Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker DIDI.\nGoldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and J.P. Morgan are the underwriters on the Didi offering.\nDidi provides a smartphone app that lets users connect with vehicles and taxis for hire. Founded in 2012, it operates in nearly 4,000 cities, counties, and towns across 16 countries,its prospectus said. Each Class A share (equal to four ADS) will have one vote, and each Class B share will have 10 votes.\nFounder and Chief Executive Will Wei Cheng, co-founder and President Jean Qing Liu and CEO of the international business group Stephen Jingshi Zhu, who all sit on the board, will own all issued and outstanding Class B ordinary shares. These shares will comprise 9.8% of the company’s total issued shares and 52% of the voting power immediately after the public offering.\nCheng, 38, is also the chairman of the board. The former Alibaba and Alipay manager will have 6.5% equity in the company but 35.5% of the voting power after the IPO.\nCheng brought on Liu two years after he founded Didi. She will have 1.6% equity in the company after the offering.\nThe other top stakeholder in Didi besides its top executives, SoftBank and Uber is Tencent Holdings, which will have a 6.4% stake post-IPO.\n‘Darkest days’\nIn summer 2018, two female passengers were killed by drivers on Didi’s Hitch platform. “These shook us to our core,” Cheng and Liu wrote in their founders’ letter under a section they called “Our darkest days.”\nThey said the company changed how it onboarded drivers and expanded background checks, as well as redesigned its technology with safety in mind. Didi also established what it calls a “SWAT team” to respond to safety incidents. In places where it is allowed, the company has installed video cameras in its ride-hailing vehicles.\nThe changes led to what the company said was “a massive drop in the number of criminal incidents per million rides on our platform as well as significant declines in the number of in-car disputes and traffic accidents.”\nThe company says that although the number of incidents have gone down, safety remains a risk factor.\nRisk factors\nOther big risk factors for the company include the Chinese government’s recently stepped-up antitrust crackdown on tech companies, including Didi. In its filing, Didi said that while it has completed a self-inspection and has tried to correct or improve in certain areas, it can’t be sure the government will be satisfied with that.\nThe company also said government regulators are concerned about driver income, pricing, and fairness to all platform participants, including riders and drivers. Like its biggest competitors, Didi treats its drivers as independent contractors, not employees. “Our business would be adversely affected if drivers were classified as employees, workers or quasi-employees,” Didi said in its filing.\nAs for how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected and continues to affect Didi’s business, the company said its core platform’s gross transaction value fell 4.8% in 2020 compared with 2019. In China, its mobility business’ GTV decreased 6.6% in the same period, while international GTV actually rose 11.4%. Didi cited increasing coronavirus cases in certain parts of the world as continuing risk factors.\nOther businesses\nDidi says it has the world’s largest network of electric vehicles on its platform: 1 million, including hybrids, as of the end of last year. This is a result of management pulling back on its sales and marketing (“S&amp;M”) expenses, exiting multiple markets, cutting costs aggressively (such as hiring), and lastly, the lower consumer discretionary spending. This is in contrast to Lazada (NYSE: BABA), as the number oforders declined Y/Yand they are also prioritizing profitability through increased monetization.</p><p>While this does show that consumers continue to spend on Shopee in SEA, its GMV and number of orders are partially contributed by Shopee Brazil. In a tough macro environment, Shopee experienced a 36% Y/Y growth in the number of brands on the platform, indicating that Shopee is an increasingly important partner in growing its online revenue.<img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7e09e1e030c482f41afaf8695896f9ec\" tg-width=\"1200\" tg-height=\"742\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>SE 10-Q</p><p>The more important portion is Shopee’s improvement in profitability. Its overall adjusted EBITDA loss per order continues to improve by 23.5% sequentially, and more specifically, Shopee Brazil’s loss per order improved by 27.5% sequentially during the quarter as compared to 6.6% in the last quarter. Moreover, Shopee is expected to attain profitability by FY23 instead of FY25 as previously guided by the management. This goes to show that the management has made great strides in pursuing profitability, which is impressive in my view. In myprevious article, I showed that in Sep 2022, SeaBank Indonesia grew its loans and customer deposits by 111% Y/Y and 147% Y/Y, respectively, and the launch of ShopeePay in Brazil. During the earnings call, management stated that the credit business is profitable and cash flow positive, and it will be focusing on growing this business in Southeast Asia (“SEA”) and Brazil.</p><p>Additionally, they have also said to diversify their source of funding for the credit business, which I believe is to seek third-party financing partners to reduce the capital required for the business and at the same time, reduce credit risk. By that measure, it is larger than Ford Motor Co., which was founded in 1903.</p>\n<p>That might make sense to you as an investor -- after all, Nio is an innovative company that sells only electric vehicles. Ford is a legacy auto maker that is working to catch up and eventually make a full transition to electric vehicles. Shares of Nio have more than tripled in the past year, while Ford's have almost doubled after cratering in the previous decade.</p>\n<p>So where does Nio <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NIO\">$(NIO)$</a>, which reported second-quarter results after the stock market closes Wednesday, fit in an investment thesis? Below are screens showing how its stock valuation compares to vehicle production, and how that valuation relates to projected earnings through 2025.</p>\n<p><b>Doubling car production</b></p>\n<p>For the second quarter, Nio delivered 21,896 vehicles for a 112% increase from a year earlier. The growth is impressive, but the total number of vehicles sold is still relatively small.</p>\n<p>Here's a look at the 10 largest auto makers by market capitalization, along with their second-quarter sales or delivery numbers (whichever was higher, if both were reported) and additional color below the table:</p>\n<img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d9e9aed76c94544dbe44cde9f7c8bebc\" tg-width=\"931\" tg-height=\"761\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\">\n<table>\n <tbody>\n  <tr></tr>\n </tbody>\n</table>\n<p>You can see that those valuations are about the future, when innovators in the EV space -- Tesla Inc.&nbsp;and Nio, on this list -- may (or may not) become as large as legacy players.</p>\n<p>For now, Ford churns out mostly internal combustion engine&nbsp;vehicles at nearly 35 times the rate that Nio makes EVs.</p>\n<p>One thing to be aware of is that the legacy auto makers don't all report their unit sales the same way. Most don't break out electric vehicle sales.</p>\n<p>Among those that do, definitions vary. For example, Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) reported that \"electrified vehicle\" sales made up 26.6% of total auto sales during the second quarter. But that category includes:</p>\n<p>For Toyota, BEV made up only 0.2% of second-quarter sales, while they accounted for 100% of sales for Nio and Tesla. Toyota's PHEV sales made up 1.4% of the total.</p>\n<p>Volkswagen AG reports electric-vehicle sales as including PHEV, which accounted for 6.7% of second-quarter sales, or BEV, which made up 4.4% of total sales. Those are impressive numbers: a combined 11.1%.</p>\n<p>For Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft , better known as BWM Group, a second-quarter breakdown of electric-vehicle deliveries isn't yet available, but for the first half of 2021, 153,243 all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles were delivered, or 11.4% of total deliveries.</p>\n<p><b>Valuation to earnings estimates</b></p>\n<p>For companies at early stages, comparisons of price-to-earnings ratios may not mean very much. Such companies are focusing on growth rather than profits. An example of this has been Amazon.com Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMZN\">$(AMZN)$</a>, which has traded at a high P/E for decades as it has worked to expand into new lines of business, at the expense of the bottom line.</p>\n<p>A high P/E ratio can reflect investors' enthusiasm for innovation and in the case of EVs, a political consensus for transforming the industry. So Nio and Tesla trade at much higher P/E ratios than the legacy auto makers.</p>\n<p>Then again, very low P/E may show too much contempt among investors for the older manufacturers, as they use their cash flow from continuing massive sales of traditional vehicles to fund their development of EVs. Opportunities may be highlighted.</p>\n<p>Normally a forward P/E ratio is calculated by dividing the share price by a rolling consensus estimate of earnings per share for 12 months. This isn't available for all the companies listed here, so we're using consensus estimates for net income for calendar 2022.</p>\n<p>First, here are P/E ratios based on current market caps and consensus 2022 estimates among analysts polled by FactSet. The table includes the annual estimates going out to 2025, and also a P/E based on current market caps and the 2025 estimates:</p>\n<img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/459439c822252d09b3dfb73cc5d51211\" tg-width=\"1058\" tg-height=\"743\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\">\n<p>Nio is expected to become profitable in 2023. Looking out to 2024, its forward P/E is lower than that of Tesla. To put the forward P/E valuations in perspective, the S&amp;P 500 Index trades for a weighted 20.5 times consensus 2022 EPS estimates.</p>\n<p><b>Valuation to sales</b></p>\n<table>\n <tbody>\n  <tr></tr>\n  <tr></tr>\n </tbody>\n</table>\n<p>Forward price-to-sales estimates might be more useful for early-stage companies that are showing low profits or net losses. (Getty Images)\nChinese electric-vehicle maker Nio Inc., which sells no cars in the U.S., has a market capitalization of $60.2 billion. By that measure, it is larger than Ford Motor Co., which was founded in 1903.\nThat might make sense to you as an investor -- after all, Nio is an innovative company that sells only electric vehicles. Ford is a legacy auto maker that is working to catch up and eventually make a full transition to electric vehicles. Shares of Nio have more than tripled in the past year, while Ford's have almost doubled after cratering in the previous decade.\nSo where does Nio $(NIO)$, which reported second-quarter results after the stock market closes Wednesday, fit in an investment thesis? Below are screens showing how its stock valuation compares to vehicle production, and how that valuation relates to projected earnings through 2025.\nDoubling car production\nFor the second quarter, Nio delivered 21,896 vehicles for a 112% increase from a year earlier. The growth is impressive, but the total number of vehicles sold is still relatively small.\nHere's a look at the 10 largest auto makers by market capitalization, along with their second-quarter sales or delivery numbers (whichever was higher, if both were reported) and additional color below the table:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou can see that those valuations are about the future, when innovators in the EV space -- Tesla Inc. and Nio, on this list -- may (or may not) become as large as legacy players.\nFor now, Ford churns out mostly internal combustion engine vehicles at nearly 35 times the rate that Nio makes EVs.\nOne thing to be aware of is that the legacy auto makers don't all report their unit sales the same way. Most don't break out electric vehicle sales.\nAmong those that do, definitions vary. For example, Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) reported that \"electrified vehicle\" sales made up 26.6% of total auto sales during the second quarter. But that category includes:\nFor Toyota, BEV made up only 0.2% of second-quarter sales, while they accounted for 100% of sales for Nio and Tesla. Toyota's PHEV sales made up 1.4% of the total.\nVolkswagen AG reports electric-vehicle sales as including PHEV, which accounted for 6.7% of second-quarter sales, or BEV, which made up 4.4% of total sales. Those are impressive numbers: a combined 11.1%.\nFor Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft , better known as BWM Group, a second-quarter breakdown of electric-vehicle deliveries isn't yet available, but for the first half of 2021, 153,243 all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles were delivered, or 11.4% of total deliveries.\nValuation to earnings estimates\nFor companies at early stages, comparisons of price-to-earnings ratios may not mean very much. Such companies are focusing on growth rather than profits. An example of this has been Amazon.com Inc. $(AMZN)$, which has traded at a high P/E for decades as it has worked to expand into new lines of business, at the expense of the bottom line.\nA high P/E ratio can reflect investors' enthusiasm for innovation and in the case of EVs, a political consensus for transforming the industry. So Nio and Tesla trade at much higher P/E ratios than the legacy auto makers.\nThen again, very low P/E may show too much contempt among investors for the older manufacturers, as they use their cash flow from continuing massive sales of traditional vehicles to fund their development of EVs. Opportunities may be highlighted.\nNormally a forward P/E ratio is calculated by dividing the share price by a rolling consensus estimate of earnings per share for 12 months. This isn't available for all the companies listed here, so we're using consensus estimates for net income for calendar 2022.\nFirst, here are P/E ratios based on current market caps and consensus 2022 estimates among analysts polled by FactSet. The table includes the annual estimates going out to 2025, and also a P/E based on current market caps and the 2025 estimates:\n\nNio is expected to become profitable in 2023. Looking out to 2024, its forward P/E is lower than that of Tesla. To put the forward P/E valuations in perspective, the S&P 500 Index trades for a weighted 20.5 times consensus 2022 EPS estimates.\nValuation to sales\n\n\n\n\n\n\nForward price-to-sales estimates might be more useful for early-stage companies that are showing low profits or net losses. Then again, the same distortions apply: Investors love the pure-play EV makers now, and may be paying too much for them when you consider that shares of Nio have more than tripled over the past year, while Tesla's stock has risen 150%.\nHere's a similar set of data driving price-to-sale ratios, again using current market caps (in the first table at the top of this article) and consensus full-calendar-year estimates in millions of U.S. dollars:\n\nFor reference, the S&P 500 trades for 2.7 times its consensus 2022 sales estimate.\n\n\n\n\n\nAnalysts' opinions\nHere's a summary of opinion of the 10 auto makers among analysts polled by FactSet. Not too hot, not too cold — this is just what the market wants.\"</p>\n<p>Heading into the report, equities have been buoyed by a slew of strong economic data earlier this week, especially on the labor market.Private payrolls rose by a better-than-expected 692,000 in June,according to ADP, andweekly initial jobless claims improved more than expectedto the lowest level since March 2020. Still, other reports underscored the still-prevalent labor supply challenges impacting companies across industries, with the scarcity capping what has otherwise been a robust economic rebound.</p>\n<p>\"It's really the labor market supply that's putting the brake on hiring right now,\" Luke Tilley, chief economist for Wilmington Trust, told Yahoo Finance. \"But we're pretty optimistic, the market is pretty optimistic, and we think that's a big part of what's driving these indexes higher.\"</p>\n<p>Friday's jobs report will also give markets a suggestion as to the timing of the Federal Reserve's next monetary policy move. For now, the Fed has kept in place both of its key crisis-era policies, or quantitative easing and a near-zero benchmark interest rate. However, an especially strong jobs report and faster-than-expected print on wage growth could justify an earlier-than-currently-telegraphed shift by the central bank.</p>\n<p>“For the first time in years, I’m actually worried about a too hot number causing some kind of volatility or pullback in stocks. That’s because the Fed has signaled they are looking to taper QE,\" Tom Essaye, Sevens Report Research founder,told Yahoo Finance. \"And if we get a really, really strong jobs number and a hot wage number, then markets are going to start to say gee, are they going to taper QE maybe before November, or are they going to taper it more intensely than we thought and in a market that's frankly been very calm and a little bit complacent, that could cause volatility.\"</p>\n<p>Still, the Fed has suggested it would not react rashly to single reports, and has given itself leeway to adjust the timeline of its monetary policy pivots as more data comes in.</p>\n<p>\"I think everyone's counting on the Fed continuing really for the foreseeable future. So I don't see any big changes there coming before 2023,\" Octavio Marenzi, CEO and founder of Opimas,told Yahoo Finance.\"And even then the Fed has hedged its bets very significantly — they've basically said we might in 2023 raise interest rates twice, but then again we might not. Not too hot, not too cold — this is just what the market wants.\"\nHeading into the report, equities have been buoyed by a slew of strong economic data earlier this week, especially on the labor market.Private payrolls rose by a better-than-expected 692,000 in June,according to ADP, andweekly initial jobless claims improved more than expectedto the lowest level since March 2020. Still, other reports underscored the still-prevalent labor supply challenges impacting companies across industries, with the scarcity capping what has otherwise been a robust economic rebound.\n\"It's really the labor market supply that's putting the brake on hiring right now,\" Luke Tilley, chief economist for Wilmington Trust, told Yahoo Finance. \"But we're pretty optimistic, the market is pretty optimistic, and we think that's a big part of what's driving these indexes higher.\"\nFriday's jobs report will also give markets a suggestion as to the timing of the Federal Reserve's next monetary policy move. For now, the Fed has kept in place both of its key crisis-era policies, or quantitative easing and a near-zero benchmark interest rate. However, an especially strong jobs report and faster-than-expected print on wage growth could justify an earlier-than-currently-telegraphed shift by the central bank.\n“For the first time in years, I’m actually worried about a too hot number causing some kind of volatility or pullback in stocks. That’s because the Fed has signaled they are looking to taper QE,\" Tom Essaye, Sevens Report Research founder,told Yahoo Finance. \"And if we get a really, really strong jobs number and a hot wage number, then markets are going to start to say gee, are they going to taper QE maybe before November, or are they going to taper it more intensely than we thought and in a market that's frankly been very calm and a little bit complacent, that could cause volatility.\"\nStill, the Fed has suggested it would not react rashly to single reports, and has given itself leeway to adjust the timeline of its monetary policy pivots as more data comes in.\n\"I think everyone's counting on the Fed continuing really for the foreseeable future. So I don't see any big changes there coming before 2023,\" Octavio Marenzi, CEO and founder of Opimas,told Yahoo Finance.\"And even then the Fed has hedged its bets very significantly — they've basically said we might in 2023 raise interest rates twice, but then again we might not.
