These stocks are widely held, not just by index investors, but also among all kinds of active fund managers—including those who don’t typically own growth companies.</p>\n<p>Together, the five companies account for almost 22% of theS&amp;P 500index. Of course, the Nifty Fifty stocks dominated the 1970s, and blue-chip stalwarts such asIBM(IBM) andAT&amp;T(T) ruled the 1980s. Those companies may have wielded even more influence over the broad economy than today’s biggest companies do, but the level of market concentration is higher now, and the Big Five’s impact on the broad market is much greater because of their size, according to Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&amp;P Dow Jones Indices. Apple and Microsoft are the first U.S. stocks whose market values have soared past $2 trillion. Though it has slipped a bit this year, Apple hit peak concentration for a single stock in the S&amp;P 500 last year at about 7%, higher than IBM’s in its heyday.</p>\n<p>There are signs that investor appetite for risk is waning, which could hurt the prospects for the growth of Big Tech. There has beena selloff in speculative cornersof the market, such as cryptocurrencies and special purpose acquisition companies, better known as SPACs. And, of course, there is therising consternationabout both inflation andinterest ratesmoving higher. If the Big Fiveslow downor tumble, the entire market—including all index investors—will feel it. If these stocks decline by 10%, for instance, in order for the S&amp;P 500 to keep trading flat, the bottom 100 stocks in the index would have to rise by a collective 75%, according toGoldman Sachs.This dynamic explains why narrow market breadth has often preceded big losses.</p>\n<p><b>When Less May Be More</b></p>\n<p>These funds are more diversified than the S&amp;P 500, and could be more resilient if the tech megacaps stumble.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d308adf067ef3205da5f7c1bddb75e77\" tg-width=\"697\" tg-height=\"366\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Investors’ portfolios are chock-full of these stocks, leaving them less diversified for a possible turn in the market. These companies are already beginning to slow down. Take Amazon, which accounts for roughly 4% of the S&amp;P 500—more than the energy, real estate, materials, or utilities sectors. Amazon hasn’t hit an all-time high this year, and has underperformed the S&amp;P 500 by 25 percentage points since September 2020 amid questions about the company’s e-commerce growth. Add in regulatory pressure, which could make the path ahead for these companies rockier, such as a House panel’s approval of sweeping legislation last month that could curb the dominance of companies like Google and Facebook.</p>\n<p>A global recovery could also make the Big Five stocks less special. “The story line with megacap tech stocks has been that economic growth has been hard to find and rates so low that you wanted to own powerful growth stocks,” says Scott Opsal, director of research at Leuthold Group. “But for those who think the economy has room to run, you don’t have to pay up for the growth that investors were willing to pay for in 2018 or 2019.” For Opsal, the changing backdrop is reason for a barbell approach, owning some of the technology winners but also diversifying into a wider array of more value-oriented and smaller stocks.</p>\n<p>With the market so concentrated in a handful of megacap tech stocks, Opsal says that investors may want the type of funds that do what the fund consultants advise against: be willing to drift out of their lane, and be willing to not fit neatly into a growth or value category.</p>\n<p>It isn’t easy finding good fund managers with the acumen to pick the right stocks beyond the other 495, the grit to avoid the crowd, and the track record that demonstrates to investors that they can be different and correct. Performance doesn’t look all that great for managers whose wariness led them to own less of the technology darlings that drove the market to highs over the past several years. And the decision to not own any—or even just less—of these companies sometimes pushed managers out of theirMorningstarcategory into areas like large-cap blend.</p>\n<p>High active share has often been a go-to gauge for finding fund managers who look different than their benchmarks. That’s a good place to start, but different doesn’t always lead to outperformance, so Morningstar strategist Alec Lucas recommends understanding what is in the managers’ portfolios and the thinking behind the picks—as well as when they buy or sell the stocks.</p>\n<p><i>Barron’s</i>looked for large-cap growth-oriented managers that don’t usually stick too close to an index and have long, and strong, track records. We turned up both diversified and concentrated funds; some didn’t own any of the Big Five, while some owned a bit, albeit less than their peers. All may offer investors a way to tweak rather than overhaul their portfolios, giving them some more diversification while still tapping into large, growing companies.</p>\n<p><b>A Concentrated Approach</b></p>\n<p>The Akre Focus fund (AKREX) falls into the concentrated bucket. It owns about 20 well-managed companies that the managers, John Neff and Chris Cerrone, think are superior businesses and adept at reinvesting in the companies. The fund has just a 4% turnover, so it holds on to its investments for years. That has been a winning long-term strategy: Akre Focus has an 18% average annual return over the past decade, beating 84% of its peers.</p>\n<p>The past few years have been tough, though: The fund hasn’t owned the Big Five, and has just 13% of its assets in any kind of technology company, whereas most of its peers have close to a third in tech. It has averaged 22% annually over the past three years; not too shabby on an absolute basis, but landing it midpack among competitors. The managers are resolute in finding growth elsewhere. “They are tremendous businesses, but how many more times can they double in value, given their current size? Maybe many times, but it’s an important question,” says Neff. “We’ve generally focused on smaller businesses with ostensibly longer runways with which to compound.”</p>\n<p>The tech investments that the managers have made are largely in software companies like Constellation Software (CSU.Canada),Adobe(ADBE), andCoStar Group(CSGP) that have long paths to growth ahead of them as more companies rely on their products. The fund also looks for companies with the type of “network effect” that makes Google and Amazon attractive—the business model gets stronger as more people use it, and makes the company that much harder to replace. Top holdings like Mastercard (MA) andVisa(V) fit that description.</p>\n<p>Many of the companies the duo favors are positioned to hold up, stand out, or even benefit from difficult times, like auto-parts retailerO’Reilly Automotive(ORLY), which recently reported its best comparable same-store sales in 25 years. Given the market backdrop, co-manager Cerrone says they aren’t finding that many bargains today—and they are willing to hold cash if that continues. Today, cash sits at just 2%. “We frankly wish we had more cash than we do today,” Cerrone says. “We’re not bearish, but we think we will be presented with better opportunities.”</p>\n<p><b>Underappreciated Growth</b></p>\n<p>The $10.1 billionPrimecap Odyssey Growthfund (POGRX) hunts for companies with above-average earnings growth, but not one of the Big Five tech stocks can be spotted in their top 10 holdings.</p>\n<p>That underweight has been painful; the fund’s 19.6% annual average return over the past five years puts it in the bottom third of large growth funds. But the managers’ willingness to stick with companies with above-average growth for the long haul, often adding to their shares in downturns, wins them fans.</p>\n<p>The fund’s managers are investing in some of the broad trends driving the Big Five—like e-commerce and cloud computing—but doing it differently, says Morningstar’s Lucas. For example, the fund owns Alibaba Group Holding (BABA) instead of Amazon, opting for China’s version of an e-commerce and cloud-computing giant that also trades at a meaningful discount to the U.S. company, Lucas says. Primecap declined to comment.</p>\n<p>About 18% of the fund is invested outside the U.S. and its average price/earnings ratio is 20, cheaper than the 29 for the large growth category, according to Morningstar. Though the fund isn’t concentrated in the Big Five tech stocks, it has double the stake in healthcare, almost 30% of assets, than other large growth funds. Its top 10 positions includeEli Lilly(LLY),Biogen(BIIB),Abiomed(ABMD), andAmgen(AMGN).</p>\n<p><b>Lean Profit Machines</b></p>\n<p>The $10.3 billionJensen Quality Growth(JENSX) focuses on companies that generate 15% return on equity for 10 consecutive years—a metric that co-manager Eric Schoenstein sees as a gauge forfoundational excellenceand fortress-like competitive advantages. Amazon and Facebook don’t make the cut. Alphabet, Microsoft, and Apple rank among the top holdings, but Schoenstein holds roughly a third less than in the Russell 1000 Growth index. Schoenstein says he is trying to be conscious of the risk of concentration if the momentum trade reverts or regulation puts a target on these companies’ backs.</p>\n<p>Schoenstein’s caution and a focus on quality companies have pushed the fund toward the bottom decile of the large blend Morningstar category year to date, with a return of 11.6%. But the fund’s 17.3% average return over the past five years puts it in the top 35% of large-blend funds tracked by Morningstar. Plus, the fund’s risk-adjusted, long-term performance stands out, losing about 77% as much as the S&amp;P 500 and Russell 1000 Growth indexes when stocks have fallen since Schoenstein began co-managing the fund in 2004, according to Morningstar.</p>\n<p>Lately, Schoenstein has been adding to quality stocks that may not be growing as fast but are more attractively priced as investors have left them behind, such asStarbucks(SBUX)—a stock that had been too pricey until the pandemic hit. “What better business is there to be in than branded addiction?” Schoenstein asks.</p>\n<p>While offices in New York City may not get to 100% occupancy, Schoenstein sees hybrid work situations continuing to drive business to Starbucks, potentially with fewer customers but higher sales, as one person buys for multiple people. The company is also closing stores to become more efficient and moving more toward quick-serve and grab-and-go in some locations rather than an all-day café experience.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/81aeb359e30f7394a363f00feb8ce0cf\" tg-width=\"707\" tg-height=\"477\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Insurance is another area that Schoenstein has been adding to, with companies like Marsh &amp; McLennan (MMC), which is dominant in multiple businesses—insurance brokerage, health benefits, and retirement asset management with Mercer. Switching costs are high in the world of insurance, and the company benefits from new trends in cybersecurity and data privacy, as well.</p>\n<p>Another recent purchase: Data-analytics providerVerisk Analytics(VRSK), which serves property and casualty insurers and gets about 80% of its revenue from subscriptions and long-term agreements. The company helps take raw data and analyze it to help insurers, for example, underwrite policies. Says Schoenstein: “Some recovery is still needed because business has struggled over the past year, with business failures and companies putting [projects] on hold. These stocks are widely held, not just by index investors, but also among all kinds of active fund managers—including those who don’t typically own growth companies.\nTogether, the five companies account for almost 22% of theS&P 500index. Of course, the Nifty Fifty stocks dominated the 1970s, and blue-chip stalwarts such asIBM(IBM) andAT&T(T) ruled the 1980s. Those companies may have wielded even more influence over the broad economy than today’s biggest companies do, but the level of market concentration is higher now, and the Big Five’s impact on the broad market is much greater because of their size, according to Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Dow Jones Indices. Apple and Microsoft are the first U.S. stocks whose market values have soared past $2 trillion. Though it has slipped a bit this year, Apple hit peak concentration for a single stock in the S&P 500 last year at about 7%, higher than IBM’s in its heyday.\nThere are signs that investor appetite for risk is waning, which could hurt the prospects for the growth of Big Tech. There has beena selloff in speculative cornersof the market, such as cryptocurrencies and special purpose acquisition companies, better known as SPACs. And, of course, there is therising consternationabout both inflation andinterest ratesmoving higher. If the Big Fiveslow downor tumble, the entire market—including all index investors—will feel it. If these stocks decline by 10%, for instance, in order for the S&P 500 to keep trading flat, the bottom 100 stocks in the index would have to rise by a collective 75%, according toGoldman Sachs.This dynamic explains why narrow market breadth has often preceded big losses.\nWhen Less May Be More\nThese funds are more diversified than the S&P 500, and could be more resilient if the tech megacaps stumble.\n\nInvestors’ portfolios are chock-full of these stocks, leaving them less diversified for a possible turn in the market. These companies are already beginning to slow down. Take Amazon, which accounts for roughly 4% of the S&P 500—more than the energy, real estate, materials, or utilities sectors. Amazon hasn’t hit an all-time high this year, and has underperformed the S&P 500 by 25 percentage points since September 2020 amid questions about the company’s e-commerce growth. Add in regulatory pressure, which could make the path ahead for these companies rockier, such as a House panel’s approval of sweeping legislation last month that could curb the dominance of companies like Google and Facebook.\nA global recovery could also make the Big Five stocks less special. “The story line with megacap tech stocks has been that economic growth has been hard to find and rates so low that you wanted to own powerful growth stocks,” says Scott Opsal, director of research at Leuthold Group. “But for those who think the economy has room to run, you don’t have to pay up for the growth that investors were willing to pay for in 2018 or 2019.” For Opsal, the changing backdrop is reason for a barbell approach, owning some of the technology winners but also diversifying into a wider array of more value-oriented and smaller stocks.\nWith the market so concentrated in a handful of megacap tech stocks, Opsal says that investors may want the type of funds that do what the fund consultants advise against: be willing to drift out of their lane, and be willing to not fit neatly into a growth or value category.\nIt isn’t easy finding good fund managers with the acumen to pick the right stocks beyond the other 495, the grit to avoid the crowd, and the track record that demonstrates to investors that they can be different and correct. Performance doesn’t look all that great for managers whose wariness led them to own less of the technology darlings that drove the market to highs over the past several years. And the decision to not own any—or even just less—of these companies sometimes pushed managers out of theirMorningstarcategory into areas like large-cap blend.\nHigh active share has often been a go-to gauge for finding fund managers who look different than their benchmarks. That’s a good place to start, but different doesn’t always lead to outperformance, so Morningstar strategist Alec Lucas recommends understanding what is in the managers’ portfolios and the thinking behind the picks—as well as when they buy or sell the stocks.\nBarron’slooked for large-cap growth-oriented managers that don’t usually stick too close to an index and have long, and strong, track records. We turned up both diversified and concentrated funds; some didn’t own any of the Big Five, while some owned a bit, albeit less than their peers. All may offer investors a way to tweak rather than overhaul their portfolios, giving them some more diversification while still tapping into large, growing companies.\nA Concentrated Approach\nThe Akre Focus fund (AKREX) falls into the concentrated bucket. It owns about 20 well-managed companies that the managers, John Neff and Chris Cerrone, think are superior businesses and adept at reinvesting in the companies. The fund has just a 4% turnover, so it holds on to its investments for years. That has been a winning long-term strategy: Akre Focus has an 18% average annual return over the past decade, beating 84% of its peers.\nThe past few years have been tough, though: The fund hasn’t owned the Big Five, and has just 13% of its assets in any kind of technology company, whereas most of its peers have close to a third in tech. It has averaged 22% annually over the past three years; not too shabby on an absolute basis, but landing it midpack among competitors. The managers are resolute in finding growth elsewhere. “They are tremendous businesses, but how many more times can they double in value, given their current size? Maybe many times, but it’s an important question,” says Neff. “We’ve generally focused on smaller businesses with ostensibly longer runways with which to compound.”\nThe tech investments that the managers have made are largely in software companies like Constellation Software (CSU.Canada),Adobe(ADBE), andCoStar Group(CSGP) that have long paths to growth ahead of them as more companies rely on their products. The fund also looks for companies with the type of “network effect” that makes Google and Amazon attractive—the business model gets stronger as more people use it, and makes the company that much harder to replace. Top holdings like Mastercard (MA) andVisa(V) fit that description.\nMany of the companies the duo favors are positioned to hold up, stand out, or even benefit from difficult times, like auto-parts retailerO’Reilly Automotive(ORLY), which recently reported its best comparable same-store sales in 25 years. Given the market backdrop, co-manager Cerrone says they aren’t finding that many bargains today—and they are willing to hold cash if that continues. Today, cash sits at just 2%. “We frankly wish we had more cash than we do today,” Cerrone says. “We’re not bearish, but we think we will be presented with better opportunities.”\nUnderappreciated Growth\nThe $10.1 billionPrimecap Odyssey Growthfund (POGRX) hunts for companies with above-average earnings growth, but not one of the Big Five tech stocks can be spotted in their top 10 holdings.\nThat underweight has been painful; the fund’s 19.6% annual average return over the past five years puts it in the bottom third of large growth funds. But the managers’ willingness to stick with companies with above-average growth for the long haul, often adding to their shares in downturns, wins them fans.\nThe fund’s managers are investing in some of the broad trends driving the Big Five—like e-commerce and cloud computing—but doing it differently, says Morningstar’s Lucas. For example, the fund owns Alibaba Group Holding (BABA) instead of Amazon, opting for China’s version of an e-commerce and cloud-computing giant that also trades at a meaningful discount to the U.S. company, Lucas says. Primecap declined to comment.\nAbout 18% of the fund is invested outside the U.S. and its average price/earnings ratio is 20, cheaper than the 29 for the large growth category, according to Morningstar. Though the fund isn’t concentrated in the Big Five tech stocks, it has double the stake in healthcare, almost 30% of assets, than other large growth funds. Its top 10 positions includeEli Lilly(LLY),Biogen(BIIB),Abiomed(ABMD), andAmgen(AMGN).\nLean Profit Machines\nThe $10.3 billionJensen Quality Growth(JENSX) focuses on companies that generate 15% return on equity for 10 consecutive years—a metric that co-manager Eric Schoenstein sees as a gauge forfoundational excellenceand fortress-like competitive advantages. Amazon and Facebook don’t make the cut. Alphabet, Microsoft, and Apple rank among the top holdings, but Schoenstein holds roughly a third less than in the Russell 1000 Growth index. Schoenstein says he is trying to be conscious of the risk of concentration if the momentum trade reverts or regulation puts a target on these companies’ backs.\nSchoenstein’s caution and a focus on quality companies have pushed the fund toward the bottom decile of the large blend Morningstar category year to date, with a return of 11.6%. But the fund’s 17.3% average return over the past five years puts it in the top 35% of large-blend funds tracked by Morningstar. Plus, the fund’s risk-adjusted, long-term performance stands out, losing about 77% as much as the S&P 500 and Russell 1000 Growth indexes when stocks have fallen since Schoenstein began co-managing the fund in 2004, according to Morningstar.\nLately, Schoenstein has been adding to quality stocks that may not be growing as fast but are more attractively priced as investors have left them behind, such asStarbucks(SBUX)—a stock that had been too pricey until the pandemic hit. “What better business is there to be in than branded addiction?” Schoenstein asks.\nWhile offices in New York City may not get to 100% occupancy, Schoenstein sees hybrid work situations continuing to drive business to Starbucks, potentially with fewer customers but higher sales, as one person buys for multiple people. The company is also closing stores to become more efficient and moving more toward quick-serve and grab-and-go in some locations rather than an all-day café experience.\n\nInsurance is another area that Schoenstein has been adding to, with companies like Marsh & McLennan (MMC), which is dominant in multiple businesses—insurance brokerage, health benefits, and retirement asset management with Mercer. Switching costs are high in the world of insurance, and the company benefits from new trends in cybersecurity and data privacy, as well.\nAnother recent purchase: Data-analytics providerVerisk Analytics(VRSK), which serves property and casualty insurers and gets about 80% of its revenue from subscriptions and long-term agreements. The company helps take raw data and analyze it to help insurers, for example, underwrite policies. During its first fiscal quarter, which ended on May 31, revenue declined 15.5% year over year to $174 million.</p>\n<p>The ongoing negotiation to sell an important part of the company's patent portfolio had a negative effect on revenue. But more worryingly, revenue from the cybersecurity segment declined by 10.1% year over year to $107 million,&nbsp;which seems weak considering the secular growth in that market, boosted by the recent rise of ransomware attacks.</p>\n<p>In contrast, given that favorable context, the endpoint protection specialist <b>CrowdStrike</b> generated another quarter of impressive revenue growth (70% year over year to $302.8 million) during its latest quarter, despite its much larger scale.</p>\n<p>In particular, BlackBerry's endpoint protection cybersecurity offering Cylance hasn't caught up yet with the competition. As an illustration, the research specialist <b>Gartner</b> positioned Cylance far away from many competitors in its May 2021 endpoint protection platforms magic quadrant in terms of ability to execute and completeness of vision.</p>\n<p>Granted, BlackBerry enhanced its cybersecurity offerings last quarter with additional cloud-based capabilities to protect remote workers. But competitors, such as CrowdStrike, have already been proposing similar features for several quarters, or even years.</p>\n<h2>Internet of Things</h2>\n<p>In contrast, BlackBerry's Internet of Things (IoT) segment showed encouraging signs of recovery. That segment mainly includes QNX, the company's embedded operating system that can be integrated into any kind of device.</p>\n<p>So during the first fiscal quarter, revenue from IoT increased by 48.3% year over year to $43 million, partly thanks to the deployment of QNX in vehicles. Indeed, the research outfit Strategy Analytics estimated QNX software is now embedded in more than 195 million vehicles, compared to 175 million the year before.</p>\n<p>That's an encouraging development for BlackBerry over the long term, as it plans to leverage its footprint in the automotive industry to grow the adoption of its IVY platform. In addition, after having announced its IVY Innovation Fund several months ago to drive innovation, it launched its IVY Advisory Council during the last quarter to develop use cases.</p>\n<h2>Growth priced in</h2>\n<p>Despite the drop following these mixed fiscal first-quarter results, BlackBerry's stock is still up more than 80% since the beginning of the year. The company's market cap, now at $6.8 billion, corresponds to 7.9 times trailing 12-month revenue of $861 million, which indicates the market is pricing in strong growth going forward.</p>\n<p>So with cybersecurity representing 61.5% of revenue during the last quarter, the company must significantly improve its security business to match the market's expectations, which won't be easy given the crowded and strong competition in that area.</p>\n<p>In addition, the success of the company's IoT business will partly depend on its cybersecurity portfolio. After riding five megacap technology stocks to new highs after new highs, investors’ portfolios may be uncomfortably concentrated in these winners at a time that some strategists see a potential turn ahead in the markets.</p>\n<p>Owning the Big Five—Apple(ticker: AAPL),Microsoft(MSFT),Amazon.com(AMZN),Facebook(FB), andAlphabet’sGoogle (GOOGL)—has been lucrative: These companies have logged gains of 125% to 245% since the beginning of 2019. These stocks are widely held, not just by index investors, but also among all kinds of active fund managers—including those who don’t typically own growth companies.</p>\n<p>Together, the five companies account for almost 22% of theS&amp;P 500index. Of course, the Nifty Fifty stocks dominated the 1970s, and blue-chip stalwarts such asIBM(IBM) andAT&amp;T(T) ruled the 1980s. Those companies may have wielded even more influence over the broad economy than today’s biggest companies do, but the level of market concentration is higher now, and the Big Five’s impact on the broad market is much greater because of their size, according to Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&amp;P Dow Jones Indices. Apple and Microsoft are the first U.S. stocks whose market values have soared past $2 trillion. Though it has slipped a bit this year, Apple hit peak concentration for a single stock in the S&amp;P 500 last year at about 7%, higher than IBM’s in its heyday.</p>\n<p>There are signs that investor appetite for risk is waning, which could hurt the prospects for the growth of Big Tech. There has beena selloff in speculative cornersof the market, such as cryptocurrencies and special purpose acquisition companies, better known as SPACs. And, of course, there is therising consternationabout both inflation andinterest ratesmoving higher. If the Big Fiveslow downor tumble, the entire market—including all index investors—will feel it. If these stocks decline by 10%, for instance, in order for the S&amp;P 500 to keep trading flat, the bottom 100 stocks in the index would have to rise by a collective 75%, according toGoldman Sachs.This dynamic explains why narrow market breadth has often preceded big losses.</p>\n<p><b>When Less May Be More</b></p>\n<p>These funds are more diversified than the S&amp;P 500, and could be more resilient if the tech megacaps stumble.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d308adf067ef3205da5f7c1bddb75e77\" tg-width=\"697\" tg-height=\"366\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Investors’ portfolios are chock-full of these stocks, leaving them less diversified for a possible turn in the market. These companies are already beginning to slow down. Take Amazon, which accounts for roughly 4% of the S&amp;P 500—more than the energy, real estate, materials, or utilities sectors. Amazon hasn’t hit an all-time high this year, and has underperformed the S&amp;P 500 by 25 percentage points since September 2020 amid questions about the company’s e-commerce growth. Add in regulatory pressure, which could make the path ahead for these companies rockier, such as a House panel’s approval of sweeping legislation last month that could curb the dominance of companies like Google and Facebook.</p>\n<p>A global recovery could also make the Big Five stocks less special. “The story line with megacap tech stocks has been that economic growth has been hard to find and rates so low that you wanted to own powerful growth stocks,” says Scott Opsal, director of research at Leuthold Group. “But for those who think the economy has room to run, you don’t have to pay up for the growth that investors were willing to pay for in 2018 or 2019.” For Opsal, the changing backdrop is reason for a barbell approach, owning some of the technology winners but also diversifying into a wider array of more value-oriented and smaller stocks.</p>\n<p>With the market so concentrated in a handful of megacap tech stocks, Opsal says that investors may want the type of funds that do what the fund consultants advise against: be willing to drift out of their lane, and be willing to not fit neatly into a growth or value category.</p>\n<p>It isn’t easy finding good fund managers with the acumen to pick the right stocks beyond the other 495, the grit to avoid the crowd, and the track record that demonstrates to investors that they can be different and correct. Performance doesn’t look all that great for managers whose wariness led them to own less of the technology darlings that drove the market to highs over the past several years. And the decision to not own any—or even just less—of these companies sometimes pushed managers out of theirMorningstarcategory into areas like large-cap blend.</p>\n<p>High active share has often been a go-to gauge for finding fund managers who look different than their benchmarks. That’s a good place to start, but different doesn’t always lead to outperformance, so Morningstar strategist Alec Lucas recommends understanding what is in the managers’ portfolios and the thinking behind the picks—as well as when they buy or sell the stocks.</p>\n<p><i>Barron’s</i>looked for large-cap growth-oriented managers that don’t usually stick too close to an index and have long, and strong, track records. We turned up both diversified and concentrated funds; some didn’t own any of the Big Five, while some owned a bit, albeit less than their peers. All may offer investors a way to tweak rather than overhaul their portfolios, giving them some more diversification while still tapping into large, growing companies.</p>\n<p><b>A Concentrated Approach</b></p>\n<p>The Akre Focus fund (AKREX) falls into the concentrated bucket. It owns about 20 well-managed companies that the managers, John Neff and Chris Cerrone, think are superior businesses and adept at reinvesting in the companies. The fund has just a 4% turnover, so it holds on to its investments for years. That has been a winning long-term strategy: Akre Focus has an 18% average annual return over the past decade, beating 84% of its peers.</p>\n<p>The past few years have been tough, though: The fund hasn’t owned the Big Five, and has just 13% of its assets in any kind of technology company, whereas most of its peers have close to a third in tech. It has averaged 22% annually over the past three years; not too shabby on an absolute basis, but landing it midpack among competitors. The managers are resolute in finding growth elsewhere. “They are tremendous businesses, but how many more times can they double in value, given their current size? Maybe many times, but it’s an important question,” says Neff. “We’ve generally focused on smaller businesses with ostensibly longer runways with which to compound.”</p>\n<p>The tech investments that the managers have made are largely in software companies like Constellation Software (CSU.Canada),Adobe(ADBE), andCoStar Group(CSGP) that have long paths to growth ahead of them as more companies rely on their products. The fund also looks for companies with the type of “network effect” that makes Google and Amazon attractive—the business model gets stronger as more people use it, and makes the company that much harder to replace. Top holdings like Mastercard (MA) andVisa(V) fit that description.</p>\n<p>Many of the companies the duo favors are positioned to hold up, stand out, or even benefit from difficult times, like auto-parts retailerO’Reilly Automotive(ORLY), which recently reported its best comparable same-store sales in 25 years. Given the market backdrop, co-manager Cerrone says they aren’t finding that many bargains today—and they are willing to hold cash if that continues. Amazon and Facebook don’t make the cut. Alphabet, Microsoft, and Apple rank among the top holdings, but Schoenstein holds roughly a third less than in the Russell 1000 Growth index. For investors looking for diversification, the fund is a relatively cheap option—charging an expense ratio of 0.68%—that isn’t beholden to a benchmark and is run by multiple managers who can hunt for their highest-conviction ideas.</p>\n<p>Managers favor companies with strong competitive positioning, which can allow companies to boost prices and better weather near-term inflationary periods. While that includes a healthy helping of healthcare and technology stocks, managers have also gravitated toward cyclical growth companies, including semiconductor firms, travel-related companies, auto suppliers, retailers, and financials benefiting from secular growth as well as getting an additional boost from the Covid recovery.</p>\n<p>“It’s very consistent, and a good core fund with a lot of good stockpickers behind it,” says Russel Kinnel, Morningstar’s director of manager research. “You want a fund to have some good technology exposure because it’s a dynamic sector.”</p>\n<p><b>Growth on the Cheap</b></p>\n<p>The $357 million Cambiar Opportunity fund (CAMOX) is a concentrated fund that owns roughly 40 stocks. The fund looks for relative values among industry winners that boast strong long-term demand prospects and pricing power that differentiate it from some of its peers. The fund’s 16% average annual return over the past five years helped it beat 94% of its large-value peers.</p>\n<p>The fund holds Amazon, which it bought for the first time in early 2020 when the market wasn’t giving the e-commerce behemoth much value for its cloud business. It has been harder to own other megacap technology stocks, says Ania Aldrich, an investment principal at Cambiar. That’s in part because of their high valuations, but especially as exchange-traded funds continue to receive record-high inflows—$400 billion in the first half of 2021, versus $507 billion for all of last year, according to ETF.com—which contributes to the market concentration.</p>\n<p>Instead, the fund has focused on areas such as financials, including JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Charles Schwab (SCHW), that can grow in this economic environment. Both would benefit from higher interest rates, but Aldrich says that wasn’t the reason to buy the stocks. Schwab, for example, is taking market share in wealth management, and its recent acquisition of Ameritrade gives it more heft and the ability to be more cost-efficient.</p>\n<p>Also attractive are companies that haven’t yet seen a full reopening of their businesses, like casino operatorPenn National Gaming(PENN), which Aldrich says is well positioned as states look for more revenue andallow online gambling, and food distributorSysco(SYY), which has yet to benefit from colleges and conferences getting back into full swing. While Sysco’s shares are up 43% in the past year, Aldrich sees more room for gains, noting that the company is a market leader and can take market share as smaller firms consolidate. Plus, it has pricing power to pass on higher commodity costs since it is a distributor.</p>\n<p>Another recent addition:Uber Technologies(UBER), which Aldrich says isn’t just a reopening beneficiary but also has increased the reach of its platform by moving into food delivery and opening the door to other services. “In the past, it was hard to outperform when you weren’t involved in the [concentrated stocks], but we see these trends as transitory. Of course, the Nifty Fifty stocks dominated the 1970s, and blue-chip stalwarts such asIBM(IBM) andAT&T(T) ruled the 1980s. Those companies may have wielded even more influence over the broad economy than today’s biggest companies do, but the level of market concentration is higher now, and the Big Five’s impact on the broad market is much greater because of their size, according to Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Dow Jones Indices. Apple and Microsoft are the first U.S. stocks whose market values have soared past $2 trillion. Though it has slipped a bit this year, Apple hit peak concentration for a single stock in the S&P 500 last year at about 7%, higher than IBM’s in its heyday.\nThere are signs that investor appetite for risk is waning, which could hurt the prospects for the growth of Big Tech. There has beena selloff in speculative cornersof the market, such as cryptocurrencies and special purpose acquisition companies, better known as SPACs. And, of course, there is therising consternationabout both inflation andinterest ratesmoving higher. If the Big Fiveslow downor tumble, the entire market—including all index investors—will feel it. If these stocks decline by 10%, for instance, in order for the S&P 500 to keep trading flat, the bottom 100 stocks in the index would have to rise by a collective 75%, according toGoldman Sachs.This dynamic explains why narrow market breadth has often preceded big losses.\nWhen Less May Be More\nThese funds are more diversified than the S&P 500, and could be more resilient if the tech megacaps stumble.\n\nInvestors’ portfolios are chock-full of these stocks, leaving them less diversified for a possible turn in the market. These companies are already beginning to slow down. Take Amazon, which accounts for roughly 4% of the S&P 500—more than the energy, real estate, materials, or utilities sectors. Amazon hasn’t hit an all-time high this year, and has underperformed the S&P 500 by 25 percentage points since September 2020 amid questions about the company’s e-commerce growth. Add in regulatory pressure, which could make the path ahead for these companies rockier, such as a House panel’s approval of sweeping legislation last month that could curb the dominance of companies like Google and Facebook.\nA global recovery could also make the Big Five stocks less special. “The story line with megacap tech stocks has been that economic growth has been hard to find and rates so low that you wanted to own powerful growth stocks,” says Scott Opsal, director of research at Leuthold Group. “But for those who think the economy has room to run, you don’t have to pay up for the growth that investors were willing to pay for in 2018 or 2019.” For Opsal, the changing backdrop is reason for a barbell approach, owning some of the technology winners but also diversifying into a wider array of more value-oriented and smaller stocks.\nWith the market so concentrated in a handful of megacap tech stocks, Opsal says that investors may want the type of funds that do what the fund consultants advise against: be willing to drift out of their lane, and be willing to not fit neatly into a growth or value category.\nIt isn’t easy finding good fund managers with the acumen to pick the right stocks beyond the other 495, the grit to avoid the crowd, and the track record that demonstrates to investors that they can be different and correct. For instance,\n <b>large-cap Energy is now trading at a ~10% FCF yield and a &gt;8% FCF/EV yield at $70 Brent in 2022, with leverage that is &lt;1x</b>. The sector has increasing potential for a sharp short squeeze and move higher, given its extreme disconnect from oil fundamentals (i.e. widest in 30+ years, Figure 10). In addition, our Semiconductor research argues that we are only 30-40% of the way into&nbsp; the current semiconductor upcycle and expect strong Y/Y growth into next year with positive EPS revisions for the next 3-4 quarters. Supply will likely remain tight into 2022, while demand remains strong (20-40% above companies’ ability to supply), thus this supply demand imbalance will persist through 2021. Although customers are responding to tight supply with higher than needed orders, ongoing supply tightness is limiting fulfillment. In fact, JPM expects channel and customer inventories to decline Q/Q again in the just completed June quarter.\n</blockquote>\n<p>Looking at the fundamentals, JPM predicts that S&amp;P 500 gains should also be supported by strong earnings growth and capital return until 2023,<b>and is why JPM is adjusting its above consensus S&amp;P 500 EPS by another $5 for 2022 to $230 (consensus $214) and 2023 to $250 (consensus $233).</b></p>\n<blockquote>\n This revision is largely due to global reopening which is delayed and bound to release further pent-up demand, inventory replenishment, rising profitability for Energy companies, and ongoing policy actions (childcare, infrastructure, etc). With yesterday's wins in federal court, some potential headwinds around litigation are clearing up. I'm now quite bullish on the stock and I think the stock price could be over $500/share by the end of the year.</p>\n<p><b>Facebook scores two wins in court</b></p>\n<p>Facebook scored a significant legal and regulatory victory yesterday with wins in two cases in which they were sued by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and a number of states. Not only are they near-term wins for the company, and but also for reasons I'll discuss in the next section I think they also bode well for the company's future regulatory prospects.</p>\n<p>In the first case, the Federal Trade Commission (\"FTC\") claimed Facebook had gained monopoly power first through its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp and second through making them inoperable with other platforms. The FTC sued for an injunction that would force Facebook to reverse or unwind the acquisitions and make them open their platform to other programs.</p>\n<p>The court held for Facebook and against the Federal Trade Commission(\"FTC\") on two important items and against Facebook on one. First, the court held that the FTC did not show that Facebook had monopoly power in the field of personal social networking by showing that it had more than 60% market share in that field. Second, the court found the FTC waited too long to seek an injunction against the company. But third, the Court thought it might be possible for the FTC to replead its case seeking an injunction against Facebook for anti-competitive conduct under a different legal standard (see pages 50-53).</p>\n<p>In the second case,the court held even more strongly in favor of Facebook&nbsp;and dismissed the states' claims. The states also sued claiming that Facebook was using monopoly power to keep competitors out and that acquiring Instagram and WhatsApp created a monopoly. The court dismissed both claims saying that first, the states had waited too long to bring their suits and that second, there was nothing illegal under current law to require Facebook to make its services interoperable.</p>\n<p>Legally, we can expect a few things. First the states will probably appeal the dismissal of their suit. I don't see this as a big issue. Parties lose lawsuits all the time and they appeal all the time without changing the result. What happens to the FTC suit is much more interesting.</p>\n<p>As noted above, while the judge dismissed the states' case, he kept the FTC case open and only dismissed their complaint (the active piece of paper in the lawsuit). He basically invited them to re-file the case under the different law he cited. The FTC has a few strategic choices to make at this point. First, they can appeal the decision to a higher court. Second, they can re-plead the case in the way the judge left open for them. Third, they can start to look for another option to regulate the company (such as passing another law or creating an administrative rule). Fourth, they can start negotiating with Facebook. I surmise they'll work on each of the above.</p>\n<p>Normally, losing a case has an impact on what I would call the \"atmosphere\" or \"momentum\" around an issue above and beyond the impact of this ruling in particular. So in most cases I would expect a federal agency to feel somewhat embarrassed or humbled and that could have an effect on their decision-making going forward. In this case, with a clear opening to re-plead the case and start over, they may not be as \"gun shy\" as one might expect.</p>\n<p>To the third point,there are already a number of members of Congress who wanted to regulate tech companies such as Facebook, and a number of them arereacting to the court decisionsaying that it shows the need for new legislation. The Biden administration'snew FTC chairwoman Lina Khan has a reputation as a tech critic, but I haven't found anything about a plan of hers to regulate Facebook. So all-in-all, there is certainly some desire for a change in law but I can't see anything in the works that could be put into place in the very near term.</p>\n<p>Fourth, litigants are always negotiating and it's entirely possible that Facebook has offered some kind of concessions already that we don't know about. I don't see that as a likely outcome here.</p>\n<p><b>Future Regulation Shouldn't Worry Facebook</b></p>\n<p>Based on experience watching regulations change in Washington and my reading of the political tea leaves, I want to explain why I'm not concerned that regulation will hamper Facebook's business prospects.</p>\n<p>First and foremost, while most people think of regulation as a system for the government to keep companies from doing things the companies want to do, it's just as true that regulation carves out a space for companies to do lots of other things without fear of adverse legal consequences. Moreover, the regulations can often entrench incumbents by making compliance too expensive or burdensome for new competitors. This was probably the case with thewell-publicized FTC settlement with Herbalife(HLF) whose share price has basically doubled since its settlement five years ago:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5ae2b9ff7e9edb953d2fae3807d1815a\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"409\"><span>Source: Seeking Alpha</span></p>\n<p>Regulation building a moat to keep out competitors and ensure profits is also probably a good description of what's happened to tobacco companies such as Philip Morris (PM) and Altria (MO). What would it take for someone to start a new cigarette company? Doesn't seem likely to happen anytime soon. A third reason regulation often doesn't end up hurting profits is the phenomenon ofregulatory capturein which the regulator ends up in effect working for the company! So all this is to say that even if regulation is coming, it may not necessarily be all that bad.</p>\n<p>Second, one of the most likely outcomes sought in litigation is divestiture or interoperability of Instagram and WhatsApp - and that may be fine for Facebook. I use WhatsApp every day (it's much more popular outside the US), and I also have other competing programs such as Telegram and Viber on my phone. The other two services seem fine, but no one I know uses them on a regular basis. Moreover, no one I know who uses WhatsApp does so because of a link to Facebook right now. (Facebook would like to link them through Messenger, though). It's possible that WhatsApp has already won the competition by being first, better capitalized or executing better. So WhatsApp spinning off from Facebook just might not make a difference to the businesses. If Facebook is forced to make its service interoperable, they might still be able to charge other companies a fee for using their assets and this really might not be a bad business move. I'm less familiar with Instagram and its competitors such as Snapchat (SNAP), but I think a similar conclusion is likely.</p>\n<p>Third, even though there are good reasons to regulate Facebook around concerns about itseffects on users' mental health,political extremismandmonopoly poweramong other things, I just don't see much happening because of how politics works. (For an interesting views on Facebook and its effects on users and society, seeZucked by Roger McNamee). Politics normally ends up serving the interests of the wealthy and powerful, and Facebook, its executives and shareholders are now wealthy and powerful. Facebook has proven effective inlobbying and managing government relations, and it is increasing its focus on these. Facebook may also have powerful allies in Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT) and other tech companies which could be wary of further regulations. Right now, a number of the most powerful people in Congress such as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi basically represent Silicon Valley which bodes well for Facebook's interests. Even in the event that Republicans take over one or both houses of Congress in the midterms, I don't believe that the recent trend of \"populism\" among many Republicans will overcome the party's core resistance to regulation and support for corporate America.</p>\n<p>So if I had to make a prediction, it would be that Facebook ends up making some kind of concessions that don't affect operations or profitability but allow politicians and regulators to claim that they've accomplished something. This has the added benefit for Facebook of making it less likely that further reform might come in the future.</p>\n<p><b>Facebook's Recent Earnings are great</b></p>\n<p>Even in the Covid-19 effected year of 2020, Facebook's numbers are outstanding and in the most recent quarter they're even stronger. As you can see from this summary of results included in the company's Form 10-K for 2020, earnings and margins are strong and growing:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f921d22e5694000a51c60e069de30b52\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"304\"><span>Source: Facebook</span></p>\n<p>Revenue grew by almost $15 billion in each of the previous 4 years, and net income climbed higher and higher for every year except 2019, when its move to $29 billion in 2020 made up for what it lost the year before.</p>\n<p>If all we had to go on were these backwards looking numbers, I would estimate the \"back of the envelope\" value this company by taking multiplying the most recent earnings of $29 billion by 33 for $957 billion and adding excess cash of $62 billion for a&nbsp;<b>market capitalization of $1,019 billion $359/share</b>. Likewise, I would say that valuing it at only 25x last year's earnings plus excess cash yields a valuation of $787 billion, would mean the company was undervalued at a price $277/share. But for the reasons I'll set out below, I think these numbers are too low.</p>\n<p><b>Estimating this year's earning - much, much higher</b></p>\n<p>In the first quarter of 2021, Facebook earned almost $9.5 billion as you can see from this income statement in the most recent Form 10-Q:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3db9a4108a92e18a59dbb1923cd9c903\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"174\"><span>Source: Facebook</span></p>\n<p>It's clear that the first quarter of 2020 had a dramatic reduction in business activity from Covid-19. It would be tough to say how much that effected customers in the first quarter of last year, making a direct comparison very difficult. In order to get a good guess what the strong first quarter means for Facebook, I want to compare the company's user statistics to quarterly profits and make some educated guesses.</p>\n<p>Facebook's earnings presentations give us a description of the monthly active users of all the company's products broken down by quarter:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e25d73bdd71d2f841ab92917e27cee44\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"429\"><span>Source: Facebook</span></p>\n<p>As well as revenue:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/79d68ef6536f200bbffa310ad257a3ed\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"430\"><span>Source: Facebook</span></p>\n<p>and net income:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d7d23e558cff9eb15938c953982d5795\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"381\"><span>Source: Facebook</span></p>\n<p>Looking over these three charts we see that even though monthly average users grow consistently, there is some seasonality to the revenue and earnings.</p>\n<p>I've made my own spreadsheet of this information:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cd491880ca77778e76d41d367223b669\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"151\"><span>Source: Author</span></p>\n<p>In light of those numbers showing:</p>\n<p>(1) MAU grows every quarter, but</p>\n<p>(2) Revenue and Net Income change with the seasons,</p>\n<p>I'm willing to make some rough guesses about the rest of this year:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4c413f3304ab59e2ca2b56822ee4465c\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"114\"><span>Source: Author</span></p>\n<p>To arrive at these estimate, I kept user growth constant and multiplied revenue by 1.44, 1.4 and 1.3 over its prior year. That's a guess, but I think that having been transparent about how I made my estimates, you can adjust that number up or down as you think best. To arrive at net income, I kept the net income/revenue ratio the same as it had been in the same quarter of the prior year. This captures some of the operating leverage and increasing returns to scale inherent in Facebook's business model.</p>\n<p>I estimated that the company would $9.5 plus $7.2 plus $11 plus $14.5 billion of net income this year, for a total of $42.2 billion. That's quite an improvement over last year's $29 billion!</p>\n<p>If these estimates are reasonable and we assume the company increases cash on the balance sheet to $75 billion, at the not-too-optimistic multiple of 25x earnings for a growing company and including the excess cash, that means Facebook stock could be meaningfully&nbsp;<b>undervalued at a market cap of $1,130 billion or $398/share</b>. Because of the growth we see, I really don't think it's unreasonable to arrive at&nbsp;<b>fair value with a 33x multiple on the stock for $1,461 billion or $526/share</b>.</p>\n<p><b>Global Growth and New Products add upside</b></p>\n<p>The estimates I used in the section above may be too low for two reasons. First, they're not accounting for the increasing returns on Facebook's growth outside the US. Facebook's growth inemerging markets such as Indiais extremely valuable because they have both a long runway for adding users, and the users themselves can be expected to become more profitable as GDP and consumption increase over time at rates faster than those in developed markets.</p>\n<p>Facebook is alsoexpanding rapidly into virtual reality. I don't have any way of estimating how big or how profitable this segment will be, but it's not unreasonable to think they'll have a lead in gaming and social segments and widespread adoption could lead to new kinds of unanticipated uses. For the last several years, spending on research and development has served to push the company's earnings down somewhat, but once they release a commercial product, we could begin to see the fruits of their labor.</p>\n<p><b>Conclusion</b></p>\n<p>With legal and regulatory challenges seeming less difficult and growing profitability, I am quite bullish on shares of Facebook. As always, a number of things could go wrong. If a new political environment becomes much more hostile to \"Big Tech\" or we see the emergence of a social movement to drop Facebook (I've tried to leave a few times myself!) that would depress earnings and change my thesis. At these prices and with this much growth on the horizon, I'm not concerned about those risks. I'm less familiar with Instagram and its competitors such as Snapchat (SNAP), but I think a similar conclusion is likely.\nThird, even though there are good reasons to regulate Facebook around concerns about itseffects on users' mental health,political extremismandmonopoly poweramong other things, I just don't see much happening because of how politics works. (For an interesting views on Facebook and its effects on users and society, seeZucked by Roger McNamee). Politics normally ends up serving the interests of the wealthy and powerful, and Facebook, its executives and shareholders are now wealthy and powerful. Facebook has proven effective inlobbying and managing government relations, and it is increasing its focus on these. Facebook may also have powerful allies in Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT) and other tech companies which could be wary of further regulations. Right now, a number of the most powerful people in Congress such as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi basically represent Silicon Valley which bodes well for Facebook's interests. Even in the event that Republicans take over one or both houses of Congress in the midterms, I don't believe that the recent trend of \"populism\" among many Republicans will overcome the party's core resistance to regulation and support for corporate America.\nSo if I had to make a prediction, it would be that Facebook ends up making some kind of concessions that don't affect operations or profitability but allow politicians and regulators to claim that they've accomplished something. This has the added benefit for Facebook of making it less likely that further reform might come in the future.\nFacebook's Recent Earnings are great\nEven in the Covid-19 effected year of 2020, Facebook's numbers are outstanding and in the most recent quarter they're even stronger. As you can see from this summary of results included in the company's Form 10-K for 2020, earnings and margins are strong and growing:\nSource: Facebook\nRevenue grew by almost $15 billion in each of the previous 4 years, and net income climbed higher and higher for every year except 2019, when its move to $29 billion in 2020 made up for what it lost the year before.\nIf all we had to go on were these backwards looking numbers, I would estimate the \"back of the envelope\" value this company by taking multiplying the most recent earnings of $29 billion by 33 for $957 billion and adding excess cash of $62 billion for a market capitalization of $1,019 billion $359/share. Likewise, I would say that valuing it at only 25x last year's earnings plus excess cash yields a valuation of $787 billion, would mean the company was undervalued at a price $277/share. But for the reasons I'll set out below, I think these numbers are too low.\nEstimating this year's earning - much, much higher\nIn the first quarter of 2021, Facebook earned almost $9.5 billion as you can see from this income statement in the most recent Form 10-Q:\nSource: Facebook\nIt's clear that the first quarter of 2020 had a dramatic reduction in business activity from Covid-19. It would be tough to say how much that effected customers in the first quarter of last year, making a direct comparison very difficult. In order to get a good guess what the strong first quarter means for Facebook, I want to compare the company's user statistics to quarterly profits and make some educated guesses.\nFacebook's earnings presentations give us a description of the monthly active users of all the company's products broken down by quarter:\nSource: Facebook\nAs well as revenue:\nSource: Facebook\nand net income:\nSource: Facebook\nLooking over these three charts we see that even though monthly average users grow consistently, there is some seasonality to the revenue and earnings.\nI've made my own spreadsheet of this information:\nSource: Author\nIn light of those numbers showing:\n(1) MAU grows every quarter, but\n(2) Revenue and Net Income change with the seasons,\nI'm willing to make some rough guesses about the rest of this year:\nSource: Author\nTo arrive at these estimate, I kept user growth constant and multiplied revenue by 1.44, 1.4 and 1.3 over its prior year. That's a guess, but I think that having been transparent about how I made my estimates, you can adjust that number up or down as you think best. To arrive at net income, I kept the net income/revenue ratio the same as it had been in the same quarter of the prior year. This captures some of the operating leverage and increasing returns to scale inherent in Facebook's business model.\nI estimated that the company would $9.5 plus $7.2 plus $11 plus $14.5 billion of net income this year, for a total of $42.2 billion. That's quite an improvement over last year's $29 billion!\nIf these estimates are reasonable and we assume the company increases cash on the balance sheet to $75 billion, at the not-too-optimistic multiple of 25x earnings for a growing company and including the excess cash, that means Facebook stock could be meaningfully undervalued at a market cap of $1,130 billion or $398/share. Because of the growth we see, I really don't think it's unreasonable to arrive at fair value with a 33x multiple on the stock for $1,461 billion or $526/share.\nGlobal Growth and New Products add upside\nThe estimates I used in the section above may be too low for two reasons. First, they're not accounting for the increasing returns on Facebook's growth outside the US. Facebook's growth inemerging markets such as Indiais extremely valuable because they have both a long runway for adding users, and the users themselves can be expected to become more profitable as GDP and consumption increase over time at rates faster than those in developed markets.\nFacebook is alsoexpanding rapidly into virtual reality. I don't have any way of estimating how big or how profitable this segment will be, but it's not unreasonable to think they'll have a lead in gaming and social segments and widespread adoption could lead to new kinds of unanticipated uses. For the last several years, spending on research and development has served to push the company's earnings down somewhat, but once they release a commercial product, we could begin to see the fruits of their labor.\nConclusion\nWith legal and regulatory challenges seeming less difficult and growing profitability, I am quite bullish on shares of Facebook. As always, a number of things could go wrong. If a new political environment becomes much more hostile to \"Big Tech\" or we see the emergence of a social movement to drop Facebook (I've tried to leave a few times myself!) that would depress earnings and change my thesis. At these prices and with this much growth on the horizon, I'm not concerned about those risks. NVIDIA benefits from regular hardware upgrade cycles. New games require even more processing power, which drives demand for the more powerful graphics processing units (GPUs).</p>\n<p>I especially like that NVIDIA is leveraging its gaming expertise to target new markets. For example, the company recently unveiled Omniverse Enterprise, a platform where design teams can build 3D virtual simulations and collaborate in real-time. In effect, NVIDIA is turning work into play (or vice versa, depending on how you look at it).</p>\n<p>NVIDIA CFO Colette Kress said in the company's Q1 conference call, \"As the world becomes more digital, virtual and collaborative, we see a significant revenue opportunity for Omniverse.\" I think that Kress's optimism is well-founded.</p>\n<p>Don't overlook NVIDIA's potential in the data center market, though. The company posted data center revenue of more than $2 billion in Q1, up 79% year over year. NVIDIA should enjoy sustained growth as more applications include artificial intelligence (AI).</p>\n<p>Assuming NVIDIA's pending acquisition of Arm passes regulatory hurdles, the company should further cement its leadership position in AI. In particular, the Arm deal would boost NVIDIA's presence in the fast-growing Internet of Things market with chips for mobile devices.</p>\n<p>Sure, an overall cryptocurrency crash could cause NVIDIA's shares to fall due to the popularity of the company's GPUs with crypto miners. It's happened before. However, the company has taken steps to segment its gaming business from crypto. I think that any pullback would only be temporary. NVIDIA has too many other strong growth drivers.</p>\n<h2>Moderna</h2>\n<p>Most companies can't honestly say that they've helped change the world.&nbsp;<b>Moderna</b> (NASDAQ:MRNA) can.</p>\n<p>The biotech's COVID-19 vaccine was second only to the vaccine developed by <b>Pfizer</b>&nbsp;and <b>BioNTech</b> to win U.S. Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). Moderna reported $1.9 billion in sales for the vaccine in Q1, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.</p>\n<p>Based on supply agreements in place as of early May, Moderna projected that its COVID-19 vaccine would rake in sales this year of $19.2 billion. However, the company has secured additional deals since then.</p>\n<p>In just the past two weeks, Moderna has landed two new huge supply agreements. The U.S. government is buying 200 million additional doses of Moderna's COVID19 vaccine. The European Commission agreed to purchase another 150 million doses.</p>\n<p>But does Moderna's market cap of close to $90 billion already price all of this growth in? To some extent, yes. However, shares still are trading at only around 10.5 times expected earnings. That's an attractive valuation, especially for a biotech stock.</p>\n<p>The big question for Moderna is how strong the recurring revenue from its COVID-19 vaccine will be. While the sales levels of 2021 and 2022 might not be sustainable over the long run, annual vaccinations could be likely (especially with emerging coronavirus variants). I expect Moderna will be able to count on significant COVID-19 vaccine sales for years to come.</p>\n<p>Then there's the pipeline. Moderna plans to advance its cytomegalovirus (CMV) vaccine into late-stage testing this year. It could easily be a megablockbuster if approved. The company has a dozen other programs in clinical testing.</p>\n<p>Moderna hopes to use its newfound riches to dramatically boost its pipeline in the near future. CEO Stephane Bancel has stated that he'd like to have up to 50 clinical programs.</p>\n<p>All of Moderna's current and planned pipeline programs are based on its messenger RNA (mRNA) technology. The company has maintained for a long time that if its mRNA approach worked for one disease, it would work for many diseases. But what we're seeing is, we're just playing goalie. There's an unlimited amount of opportunities to hack us, and no risks or repercussions to those doing the intrusions,\" Mandia said. \"So over time, you're going to see successful intrusions. You know, we can't play successful defense every day.\"\nOutlawing ransomware payments by itself is not an adequate solution, Mandia said, while alluding to the incident involving Colonial Pipeline last month. But more worryingly, revenue from the cybersecurity segment declined by 10.1% year over year to $107 million,&nbsp;which seems weak considering the secular growth in that market, boosted by the recent rise of ransomware attacks.</p>\n<p>In contrast, given that favorable context, the endpoint protection specialist <b>CrowdStrike</b> generated another quarter of impressive revenue growth (70% year over year to $302.8 million) during its latest quarter, despite its much larger scale.</p>\n<p>In particular, BlackBerry's endpoint protection cybersecurity offering Cylance hasn't caught up yet with the competition. As an illustration, the research specialist <b>Gartner</b> positioned Cylance far away from many competitors in its May 2021 endpoint protection platforms magic quadrant in terms of ability to execute and completeness of vision.</p>\n<p>Granted, BlackBerry enhanced its cybersecurity offerings last quarter with additional cloud-based capabilities to protect remote workers. But competitors, such as CrowdStrike, have already been proposing similar features for several quarters, or even years.</p>\n<h2>Internet of Things</h2>\n<p>In contrast, BlackBerry's Internet of Things (IoT) segment showed encouraging signs of recovery. That segment mainly includes QNX, the company's embedded operating system that can be integrated into any kind of device.</p>\n<p>So during the first fiscal quarter, revenue from IoT increased by 48.3% year over year to $43 million, partly thanks to the deployment of QNX in vehicles. Indeed, the research outfit Strategy Analytics estimated QNX software is now embedded in more than 195 million vehicles, compared to 175 million the year before.</p>\n<p>That's an encouraging development for BlackBerry over the long term, as it plans to leverage its footprint in the automotive industry to grow the adoption of its IVY platform. In addition, after having announced its IVY Innovation Fund several months ago to drive innovation, it launched its IVY Advisory Council during the last quarter to develop use cases.</p>\n<h2>Growth priced in</h2>\n<p>Despite the drop following these mixed fiscal first-quarter results, BlackBerry's stock is still up more than 80% since the beginning of the year. The company's market cap, now at $6.8 billion, corresponds to 7.9 times trailing 12-month revenue of $861 million, which indicates the market is pricing in strong growth going forward.</p>\n<p>So with cybersecurity representing 61.5% of revenue during the last quarter, the company must significantly improve its security business to match the market's expectations, which won't be easy given the crowded and strong competition in that area.</p>\n<p>In addition, the success of the company's IoT business will partly depend on its cybersecurity portfolio.
