The stock rally came after Citron Research, one of the most well-known short sellers targeting U.S.-listed Chinese shares, cheered huge upside potential for the Chinese e-commerce giant.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c90b7e4397824c8c8a971838ed10f1ac\" alt=\"\"/>Alibaba shares are gaining momentum and should cruise past US$100.00, Citron posted on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. Based on Citron's expectation, Alibaba shares would surge at least nearly 24% from theire close on Wednesday. </p><p>Citron showed bullish on Alibaba for its artificial intelligence (AI) technology-powered cloud business and large language model (LLM) and anticipating the company will emulate the success of Amazon and Microsoft in China. Noting investors recognizing Alibaba’s AI cloud prospects and strategic investments, Citron highlighted Tongyiqianwen spearheading China’s LLM, attaching a screenshot of test results by OpenCmpass, an open platform providing comprehensive evaluation for large models.</p><p>Citron expressed optimism on Alibaba days after the company released financial results showcasing stellar profitability of its cloud business. Alibaba revenue grew 7% year-over-year (YoY) to RMB221.87 billion (US$30.73 billion) in the fourth fiscal quarter ended March 31, 2024, beating analysts’ estimated RMB 219.79 billion. The non-GAAP adjusted EBITA, excluding share-based compensation expense, impairment of intangible assets and goodwill and certain other items, dropped 4.1% YoY to RM30.81 billion, stil better than the expected RMB30.38 billion. By segment, Alibaba Cloud Intelligence (Alibaba Cloud) generated RMB25.595 billion that quarter, up 3% YoY, and adjusted EBITA surged 45% YoY to RMB1.43 billion.</p><p>Alibaba said its core public cloud offerings, which include products such as elastic compute, database and AI products, recorded double-digit YoY growth in revenue, and AI-related revenue increased triple-digit YoY. Overall revenue of Alibaba Cloud excluding Alibaba-consolidated subsidiaries decreased slightly YoY as the company transitioned away from low-margin project-based revenues. The company expected the strong revenue growth in public cloud and AI-related products will offset the impact of the roll-off of project-based revenues.</p><p>Alibaba Cloud has established strategic partnerships with the vast majority of leading foundational model companies in China, and at the same time, Alibaba's proprietary foundational model, Tongyi, released a 110 billion parameter model late April, which is on par with the top open-source models globally, the CEO Eddie Wu, or Wu Yongming, introduced at an earnings call. Wu said Alibaba will deeply integrate its Tongyi large model with other advanced AI infrastructure to realize synergies and optimization across software and hardware. “We are confident that Alibaba Cloud's revenue, including -- excluding internal customers, will return to double-digit growth in the second half of the 2025 fiscal year,” said Wu.</p><p>As to compositioin of the Alibaba Cloud revenue growth driver behind AI-related products, Wu told analysts the double-digit growth of the cloud business continues to be offset by the diminishing but still ongoing impact of that low-margin project-based business. Alibaba expects to see complete disapperance of that drag within one or two quarters into the new fiscal year, and as it continues to phase out that low margin project based business, revenues are expected to grow faster, primarily driven, again, by public cloud and by AI-enabled offerings.</p></body></html>","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; charset=utf-8\" />\n<meta name=\"viewport\" content=\"width=device-width,initial-scale=1.0,minimum-scale=1.0,maximum-scale=1.0,user-scalable=no\"/>\n<meta name=\"format-detection\" content=\"telephone=no,email=no,address=no\" />\n<title>Alibaba Shares Jump 7% after Short Seller Citron Eyes Over 20% Surge, Bullish on AI Cloud</title>\n<style type=\"text/css\">\na,abbr,acronym,address,applet,article,aside,audio,b,big,blockquote,body,canvas,caption,center,cite,code,dd,del,details,dfn,div,dl,dt,\nem,embed,fieldset,figcaption,figure,footer,form,h1,h2,h3,h4,h5,h6,header,hgroup,html,i,iframe,img,ins,kbd,label,legend,li,mark,menu,nav,\nobject,ol,output,p,pre,q,ruby,s,samp,section,small,span,strike,strong,sub,summary,sup,table,tbody,td,tfoot,th,thead,time,tr,tt,u,ul,var,video{ font:inherit;margin:0;padding:0;vertical-align:baseline;border:0 }\nbody{ font-size:16px; line-height:1.5; color:#999; background:transparent; }\n.wrapper{ overflow:hidden;word-break:break-all;padding:10px; }\nh1,h2{ font-weight:normal; line-height:1.35; margin-bottom:.6em; }\nh3,h4,h5,h6{ line-height:1.35; margin-bottom:1em; }\nh1{ font-size:24px; }\nh2{ font-size:20px; }\nh3{ font-size:18px; }\nh4{ font-size:16px; }\nh5{ font-size:14px; }\nh6{ font-size:12px; }\np,ul,ol,blockquote,dl,table{ margin:1.2em 0; }\nul,ol{ margin-left:2em; }\nul{ list-style:disc; }\nol{ list-style:decimal; }\nli,li p{ margin:10px 0;}\nimg{ max-width:100%;display:block;margin:0 auto 1em; }\nblockquote{ color:#B5B2B1; border-left:3px solid #aaa; padding:1em; }\nstrong,b{font-weight:bold;}\nem,i{font-style:italic;}\ntable{ width:100%;border-collapse:collapse;border-spacing:1px;margin:1em 0;font-size:.9em; }\nth,td{ padding:5px;text-align:left;border:1px solid #aaa; }\nth{ font-weight:bold;background:#5d5d5d; }\n.symbol-link{font-weight:bold;}\n/* header{ border-bottom:1px solid #494756; } */\n.title{ margin:0 0 8px;line-height:1.3;color:#ddd; }\n.meta {color:#5e5c6d;font-size:13px;margin:0 0 .5em; }\na{text-decoration:none; color:#2a4b87;}\n.meta .head { display: inline-block; overflow: hidden}\n.head .h-thumb { width: 30px; height: 30px; margin: 0; padding: 0; border-radius: 50%; float: left;}\n.head .h-content { margin: 0; padding: 0 0 0 9px; float: left;}\n.head .h-name {font-size: 13px; color: #eee; margin: 0;}\n.head .h-time {font-size: 11px; color: #7E829C; margin: 0;line-height: 11px;}\n.small {font-size: 12.5px; display: inline-block; transform: scale(0.9); -webkit-transform: scale(0.9); transform-origin: left; -webkit-transform-origin: left;}\n.smaller {font-size: 12.5px; display: inline-block; transform: scale(0.8); -webkit-transform: scale(0.8); transform-origin: left; -webkit-transform-origin: left;}\n.bt-text {font-size: 12px;margin: 1.5em 0 0 0}\n.bt-text p {margin: 0}\n</style>\n</head>\n<body>\n<div class=\"wrapper\">\n<header>\n<h2 class=\"title\">\nAlibaba Shares Jump 7% after Short Seller Citron Eyes Over 20% Surge, Bullish on AI Cloud\n</h2>\n\n<h4 class=\"meta\">\n\n\n<a class=\"head\" href=\"https://laohu8.com/wemedia/1065587721\">\n\n\n<div class=\"h-thumb\" style=\"background-image:url(https://static.tigerbbs.com/72948639b39fd795a430fcaa2772851c);background-size:cover;\"></div>\n\n<div class=\"h-content\">\n<p class=\"h-name\">TMTPost </p>\n<p class=\"h-time\">2024-05-17 10:02</p>\n</div>\n\n</a>\n\n\n</h4>\n\n</header>\n<article>\n<html><head></head><body><p>TMTPost -- The American depositary receipts (ADRs) of Alibaba Group jumped more than 7% to US$86.70 on Thursday, outperforming the stock benchmark S&P 500 that closed 0.21% lower. The e-commerce and cloud leader's revenue rose 9% year over year (11% in constant currency terms) to $127.4 billion and exceeded analysts' estimates by $2.9 billion.</p><p>It posted a net profit of $3.2 billion, which marked a big improvement from its net loss of $3.8 billion a year earlier, as its earnings of $0.31 per share cleared the consensus forecast by $0.11. Its stake in the struggling electric vehicle maker <strong>Rivian</strong> continued to weigh down its bottom line with a pre-tax valuation loss of $467 million.</p><p>Amazon's growth rates seem stable, but its stock still dipped after the report and remains more than 40% below its all-time high. That slowdown was exacerbated by inflation and other macro headwinds, which broadly curbed consumer spending and enterprise spending on cloud-based services.</p><p>Amazon's revenue rose 22% in 2021, but it cooled to just 9% growth in 2022. Its paper losses in Rivian also caused it to post a net loss of $2.7 billion in 2022.</p><p>Last year, Amazon generated 61% of its revenue from its North America business, 23% from its international business, and the remaining 23% from AWS. Here's how those three core businesses fared over the past year:</p><table style=\"border-collapse:collapse;\"><colgroup><col width=\"167\"/><col width=\"73\"/><col width=\"74\"/><col width=\"73\"/><col width=\"75\"/><col width=\"74\"/></colgroup><tbody><tr><th data-colwidth=\"167\" style=\"text-align:left;width:167px;\"><p>Metric</p></th><th data-colwidth=\"73\" style=\"text-align:left;width:73px;\"><p>Q1 2022</p></th><th data-colwidth=\"74\" style=\"text-align:left;width:74px;\"><p>Q2 2022</p></th><th data-colwidth=\"73\" style=\"text-align:left;width:73px;\"><p>Q3 2022</p></th><th data-colwidth=\"75\" style=\"text-align:left;width:75px;\"><p>Q4 2022</p></th><th data-colwidth=\"74\" style=\"text-align:left;width:74px;\"><p>Q1 2023</p></th></tr><tr><td data-colwidth=\"167\" style=\"text-align:left;width:167px;\"><p>North America sales growth (YOY)</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"73\" style=\"text-align:left;width:73px;\"><p>8%</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"74\" style=\"text-align:left;width:74px;\"><p>10%</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"73\" style=\"text-align:left;width:73px;\"><p>20%</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"75\" style=\"text-align:left;width:75px;\"><p>13%</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"74\" style=\"text-align:left;width:74px;\"><p>11%</p></td></tr><tr><td data-colwidth=\"167\" style=\"text-align:left;width:167px;\"><p>International sales growth (YOY)</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"73\" style=\"text-align:left;width:73px;\"><p>(6%)</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"74\" style=\"text-align:left;width:74px;\"><p>(12%)</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"73\" style=\"text-align:left;width:73px;\"><p>(5%)</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"75\" style=\"text-align:left;width:75px;\"><p>(8%)</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"74\" style=\"text-align:left;width:74px;\"><p>1%</p></td></tr><tr><td data-colwidth=\"167\" style=\"text-align:left;width:167px;\"><p>AWS sales growth (YOY)</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"73\" style=\"text-align:left;width:73px;\"><p>37%</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"74\" style=\"text-align:left;width:74px;\"><p>33%</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"73\" style=\"text-align:left;width:73px;\"><p>27%</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"75\" style=\"text-align:left;width:75px;\"><p>20%</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"74\" style=\"text-align:left;width:74px;\"><p>16%</p></td></tr><tr><td data-colwidth=\"167\" style=\"text-align:left;width:167px;\"><p>Total sales growth (YOY)</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"73\" style=\"text-align:left;width:73px;\"><p>7%</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"74\" style=\"text-align:left;width:74px;\"><p>7%</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"73\" style=\"text-align:left;width:73px;\"><p>15%</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"75\" style=\"text-align:left;width:75px;\"><p>9%</p></td><td data-colwidth=\"74\" style=\"text-align:left;width:74px;\"><p>9%</p></td></tr></tbody></table><p>Data source: Amazon. YOY = year over year. </p><p>Amazon's North America business is holding steady, and its international business seems to be stabilizing after lapping a challenging year. However, AWS' growth is still decelerating as cautious companies rein in their software spending. That ongoing slowdown is troubling for two reasons.</p><p>First, Amazon generates most of its operating profits from AWS' higher-margin business, and those profits subsidize the expansion of its lower-margin retail businesses. That's how Amazon offers free shipping, cheap hardware devices, and digital perks for its Prime members. Therefore, AWS' slowdown could erode Amazon's defenses against its retail competitors.</p><p>Second, AWS is still the largest cloud infrastructure platform in the world, but it faces stiff competition from <strong>Microsoft</strong>'s Azure and <strong>Alphabet</strong>'s Google Cloud Platform -- which grew their revenue 27% and 28% year over year, respectively, in their latest quarters. AWS' slower growth rate suggests it could struggle to stay ahead of those aggressive competitors.</p><p>During the conference call, CFO Brian Olsavsky said AWS' clients would continue to optimize their cloud spending in the second quarter, and that the segment's April growth rates were "about 500 basis points lower than what we saw in Q1."</p><p>Even though Amazon is bracing for more near-term headwinds for AWS, it still expects its total revenue to rise 5%-10% year over year in the second quarter. Analysts expect its revenue to rise 8% for the full year.</p><h2>Focusing on cutting costs</h2><p>As Amazon's growth cools off, it's shutting down some of its weaker businesses and shrinking its workforce to boost its margins. It already announced 18,000 layoffs in late 2022, and it plans to cut another 9,000 jobs this year.</p><p>Amazon's operating margin rose 50 basis points year over year and 190 basis points sequentially to 3.7% in the first quarter. It expects its operating margin to land between 1.5% and 4.1% for the second quarter, compared to analysts' estimates of 3.4% and 2.7% back in the second quarter of 2022.</p><p>As Amazon streamlines its operations, its investment-related losses from Rivian could moderate if the EV maker's stock finally bottoms out. Analysts expect that mix of rising operating margins and lower investment losses to bring Amazon back to profitability with a net profit of $14.7 billion, or $1.42 per share, for the full year.</p><h2>Is Amazon's stock too cheap to ignore?</h2><p>Amazon's stock still looks a bit pricey at nearly 60 times forward earnings, but that valuation has been temporarily distorted by its losses in Rivian. The e-commerce and cloud leader's revenue rose 9% year over year (11% in constant currency terms) to $127.4 billion and exceeded analysts' estimates by $2.9 billion. It posted a net profit of $3.2 billion, which marked a big improvement from its net loss of $3.8 billion a year earlier, as its earnings of $0.31 per share cleared the consensus forecast by $0.11. Its stake in the struggling electric vehicle maker Rivian continued to weigh down its bottom line with a pre-tax valuation loss of $467 million.Amazon's growth rates seem stable, but its stock still dipped after the report and remains more than 40% below its all-time high. Should value-seeking investors buy Amazon's stock now as the bulls look the other way?Image source: Amazon.Amazon still faces near-term headwindsAmazon's growth accelerated during the pandemic as more consumers shopped online and the soaring usage of cloud-based services lit a fire under its Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform. However, that growth spurt set both businesses up for tough year-over-year comparisons after the pandemic began to pass. That slowdown was exacerbated by inflation and other macro headwinds, which broadly curbed consumer spending and enterprise spending on cloud-based services.Amazon's revenue rose 22% in 2021, but it cooled to just 9% growth in 2022. Its paper losses in Rivian also caused it to post a net loss of $2.7 billion in 2022.Last year, Amazon generated 61% of its revenue from its North America business, 23% from its international business, and the remaining 23% from AWS. Here's how those three core businesses fared over the past year:MetricQ1 2022Q2 2022Q3 2022Q4 2022Q1 2023North America sales growth (YOY)8%10%20%13%11%International sales growth (YOY)(6%)(12%)(5%)(8%)1%AWS sales growth (YOY)37%33%27%20%16%Total sales growth (YOY)7%7%15%9%9%Data source: Amazon. YOY = year over year. Amazon's North America business is holding steady, and its international business seems to be stabilizing after lapping a challenging year. However, AWS' growth is still decelerating as cautious companies rein in their software spending. That ongoing slowdown is troubling for two reasons.First, Amazon generates most of its operating profits from AWS' higher-margin business, and those profits subsidize the expansion of its lower-margin retail businesses. That's how Amazon offers free shipping, cheap hardware devices, and digital perks for its Prime members. Therefore, AWS' slowdown could erode Amazon's defenses against its retail competitors.Second, AWS is still the largest cloud infrastructure platform in the world, but it faces stiff competition from Microsoft's Azure and Alphabet's Google Cloud Platform -- which grew their revenue 27% and 28% year over year, respectively, in their latest quarters. AWS' slower growth rate suggests it could struggle to stay ahead of those aggressive competitors.During the conference call, CFO Brian Olsavsky said AWS' clients would continue to optimize their cloud spending in the second quarter, and that the segment's April growth rates were \"about 500 basis points lower than what we saw in Q1.\"Even though Amazon is bracing for more near-term headwinds for AWS, it still expects its total revenue to rise 5%-10% year over year in the second quarter. Analysts expect its revenue to rise 8% for the full year.Focusing on cutting costsAs Amazon's growth cools off, it's shutting down some of its weaker businesses and shrinking its workforce to boost its margins. It already announced 18,000 layoffs in late 2022, and it plans to cut another 9,000 jobs this year.Amazon's operating margin rose 50 basis points year over year and 190 basis points sequentially to 3.7% in the first quarter. It expects its operating margin to land between 1.5% and 4.1% for the second quarter, compared to analysts' estimates of 3.4% and 2.7% back in the second quarter of 2022.As Amazon streamlines its operations, its investment-related losses from Rivian could moderate if the EV maker's stock finally bottoms out. Analysts expect that mix of rising operating margins and lower investment losses to bring Amazon back to profitability with a net profit of $14.7 billion, or $1.42 per share, for the full year.Is Amazon's stock too cheap to ignore?Amazon's stock still looks a bit pricey at nearly 60 times forward earnings, but that valuation has been temporarily distorted by its losses in Rivian. If we look at its revenue alone, it looks dirt cheap at less than 2 times this year's sales.Amazon's decentralized challenger Shopify, which faces the same headwinds in the e-commerce market, still trades at 8 times this year's sales. Its smaller artisan rival Etsy trades at 5 times this year's sales. In short, Amazon's stock could bounce back quickly once the macro environment improves. Unprecedented Covid-19 stimulus, economic re-opening, low unemployment are contributory factors. However, a potential acceleration of Fed rate hikes, high recession probabilities in the US, Europe and stubborn inflation increases downside risks to this status quo,” he writes.</p><p>“Indeed, during the global financial crisis (GFC) it took just three quarters for NPLs to rise from 1.5% to 2.5% and specific provisions (SP) jumped nearly two times between 1QFY2008-4QFY2009. Similarly, during the offshore and marine (O&M) crisis, SPs increased nearly three times between 1QFY2016- 4QFY2017. Unprecedented Covid-19 stimulus, economic re-opening, low unemployment are contributory factors. However, a potential acceleration of Fed rate hikes, high recession probabilities in the US, Europe and stubborn inflation increases downside risks to this status quo,” he writes.“Indeed, during the global financial crisis (GFC) it took just three quarters for NPLs to rise from 1.5% to 2.5% and specific provisions (SP) jumped nearly two times between 1QFY2008-4QFY2009. Similarly, during the offshore and marine (O&M) crisis, SPs increased nearly three times between 1QFY2016- 4QFY2017. While China’s re-opening is a positive, how much of an offset this could provide is so far unclear,” he adds, estimating that credit charges could rise to 24 basis points (bps) to 26 bps in FY2023 to FY2024 compared to just 15 bps in FY2022.Limited upside catalysts to banksIn his March 10 report, the analyst points out that the sector’s risk-reward is now “largely balanced” as the banks continue to report “resilient” operations with “strong capital levels, elevated margins and a wealth management turnaround” that should see the banks through the “current tough macro environment”.He adds that he sees the banks’ net interest margins (NIMs) remaining “higher for longer” following their record growth in FY2022, but also notes that their growth may taper off.“With further hikes [from the US Federal Reserve or US Fed] forecasted, margins are set to remain elevated, which should keep net interest income (NII) supported even if loan growth disappoints,” says Wickramasinghe.“However, we expect the pace of NIM expansion to decelerate sharply (+8 bps y-o-y FY2023) as funding competition heats up driving deposit costs higher. If we look at its revenue alone, it looks dirt cheap at less than 2 times this year's sales.</p><p>Amazon's decentralized challenger <strong>Shopify</strong>, which faces the same headwinds in the e-commerce market, still trades at 8 times this year's sales. It's stuck in a cyclical rut, but it could be a great time to buy the stock if you believe it will remain the dominant force in e-commerce and cloud computing.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":133,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":236807816802344,"gmtCreate":1698849946707,"gmtModify":1698849950583,"author":{"id":"4087903340756810","authorId":"4087903340756810","name":"Hazelstixks","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/856022887b2e9b642411bd8b3de391c1","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4087903340756810","idStr":"4087903340756810"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a href=\"https://ttm.financial/S/MSFT\">$Microsoft(MSFT)$ </a>","listText":"<a href=\"https://ttm.financial/S/MSFT\">$Microsoft(MSFT)$ </a>","text":"$Microsoft(MSFT)$","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/43012e826652b342779e06b5bb13b73d","width":"1086","height":"1712"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/236807816802344","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":609,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9941958848,"gmtCreate":1679926791384,"gmtModify":1679926796632,"author":{"id":"4087903340756810","authorId":"4087903340756810","name":"Hazelstixks","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/856022887b2e9b642411bd8b3de391c1","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4087903340756810","idStr":"4087903340756810"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"F","listText":"F","text":"F","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9941958848","repostId":"2322445228","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2322445228","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Dow Jones publishes the world’s most trusted business news and financial information in a variety of media.","home_visible":0,"media_name":"Dow Jones","id":"106","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/150f88aa4d182df19190059f4a365e99"},"pubTimestamp":1679910610,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2322445228?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-03-27 17:50","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Jack Ma Returns to China. While China’s re-opening is a positive, how much of an offset this could provide is so far unclear,” he adds, estimating that credit charges could rise to 24 basis points (bps) to 26 bps in FY2023 to FY2024 compared to just 15 bps in FY2022.</p><p><b>Limited upside catalysts to banks</b></p><p>In his March 10 report, the analyst points out that the sector’s risk-reward is now “largely balanced” as the banks continue to report “resilient” operations with “strong capital levels, elevated margins and a wealth management turnaround” that should see the banks through the “current tough macro environment”.</p><p>He adds that he sees the banks’ net interest margins (NIMs) remaining “higher for longer” following their record growth in FY2022, but also notes that their growth may taper off.</p><p>“With further hikes [from the US Federal Reserve or US Fed] forecasted, margins are set to remain elevated, which should keep net interest income (NII) supported even if loan growth disappoints,” says Wickramasinghe.</p><p>“However, we expect the pace of NIM expansion to decelerate sharply (+8 bps y-o-y FY2023) as funding competition heats up driving deposit costs higher. Low-cost current account savings account (CASA) deposits dropped to 53% of the total versus a peak of 65% in FY2021. We expect this to fall further to 47% by FY2023 increasing costs,” he adds.</p><p>On the back of this, the analyst sees a “bright” spot in non-interest income, especially in wealth management – where the sector has continued to see inflows in assets under management (AUM).</p><p>“A diversion of these funds to higher risk fee-generating activities from passive fixed deposits needs better macro clarity. Therefore, the timing of an inflection is unclear in so far in 1HFY2023,” he says.</p><p>As the analyst sees “limited upside catalysts”, he has downgraded his rating on the sector. Low-cost current account savings account (CASA) deposits dropped to 53% of the total versus a peak of 65% in FY2021. We expect this to fall further to 47% by FY2023 increasing costs,” he adds.On the back of this, the analyst sees a “bright” spot in non-interest income, especially in wealth management – where the sector has continued to see inflows in assets under management (AUM).“A diversion of these funds to higher risk fee-generating activities from passive fixed deposits needs better macro clarity. Therefore, the timing of an inflection is unclear in so far in 1HFY2023,” he says.As the analyst sees “limited upside catalysts”, he has downgraded his rating on the sector. Wickramasinghe has also downgraded his calls for United Overseas Bank (UOB) and Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) to “hold”.The analyst’s target prices for UOB and OCBC are at $31.73 and $13.58 respectively.Among the banks, DBS is the analyst’s top pick with its strong franchise, as well as return on equity (ROE) and North Asia growth. Wickramasinghe has a “buy” call on DBS with a target price of $39.12.Regionally, the analyst prefers Malaysian banks, CIMB and RHB, keeping his “buy” calls and target prices of RM6.60 ($1.99) for CIMB and RM5.72 for RHB.
