Record fund launches. Record assets. If active money management is in decline, someone forgot to tell the ETF industry.
\n
Amped up by a meme-crazed market and emboldened by the success of Cathie Wood’s Ark Investment Management, stock pickers are storming the $6.6 trillion U.S. exchange-traded fund universe like never before -- adding a new twist in the 50-year invasion from passive investing.
\n
Passive funds still dominate the industry, but actively managed products have cut into that lead, scooping up three-times their share of the unprecedented $500 billion plowed into ETFs in 2021, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. New active funds are arriving at double the rate of passive rivals, and the cohort has boosted its market share by a third in a year.
\n
“Historically, people have thought about ETFs as being indexed-based,” said Todd Rosenbluth, head of ETF and mutual fund research at CFRA Research. “Then Ark became a household name, and then investors came to realize that not only were those products worth looking at, but so were others.”
\n
None of this is supposed to happen in an industry built on the magic of indexing. Yet a market roller coaster brought on by the pandemic is helping discretionary asset managers turn ETFs to their own advantage.
\n
Equity conditions in general have become conducive to an active approach, leadership shifting in a stop-start economy, an unpredictable macro backdrop, and increased market breadth.
\n
Read more: Active Funds Crushed Equity Benchmarks in May Like Never Before
\n
At the same time, investors are showing an unusual willingness to make concentrated bets, from riding the meme-stock madness to following the kind of thematic vision laid out by Wood.
\n
They’ve poured $62 billion into active ETFs year-to-date. That’s 12% of total flows going to a slice of the market with only 4% of assets. In the rush to tap the burgeoning demand, issuers have now launched 156 actively managed products in 2021, compared with 77 passive funds.
\n
“At the end of day, the ETF is just a wrapper, it’s just a way to package and distribute an investment strategy,” said Ben Johnson, director of global ETF research at Morningstar. “More investors are getting hip to the fact that the notion of an actively-managed ETF is not an oxymoron.”
\n
Fifty-Year Battle
\n
The active surge is the latest development in a money-management battle that’s been raging since July 1971, when a team at Wells Fargo & Co. created the original index fund.
\n
Today, the passive juggernaut is slashing industry costs, opening up investing to the masses and forcing discretionary traders to adapt or die. Active launches may be booming, but the bulk of cash flooding U.S. stocks is still destined for big, cheap funds that do nothing but track the market.
\n
Read more: Wall Street Surrenders to the $500 Billion ETF Rush
\n
“Active ETFs are doing better than they have in past, but passive is still king,” said James Seyffart, an ETF analyst for Bloomberg Intelligence. “A lot of that active flow in the big months from late 2020 to early 2021 is to Cathie’s funds.”
\n
Wood has become the poster child for active management in ETFs. The flagship fund at Ark was one of the best-performing in America last year with a 149% return.
\n
Inspired by this and her enticing thematic approach -- which focuses on trends like robotics or space travel rather than market segments -- investors have sunk $14.5 billion into Ark funds in 2021.
\n
Passive Attack
\n
The mini boom for active ETFs comes not a moment too soon for the stock-picking industry.
\n
Passive funds -- mutual and exchange-traded -- now manage $11 trillion and are on course to hold 50% of all registered U.S. fund assets within five years, according to BI calculations.
\n
Critics say the rapidly swelling index industry is blowing bubbles in stock markets, weakening corporate governance and more. And in some ways, it can also hit returns.
\n
Take Tesla Inc.’s entry into the S&P 500 in December. While discretionary managers could buy Elon Musk’s firm in advance, index funds ended up adding it at an inflated valuation -- and were forced to offload billions of dollars in other stocks to make space in portfolios.
\n
“Index funds systematically buy high and sell low,” wrote Rob Arnott of Research Affiliates and his colleagues in a June paper. They argued investors would have been better off holding the company pushed out of the index to make way for Tesla.
\n
The main advantage stock pickers enjoy over their passive peers is more flexibility in deploying their cash. That’s something they’ve been able to bring to ETFs for years -- Wood’s first fund launched in 2014 -- but it was a rule change in 2019 that paved the way for the current jump in activity.
\n
It made launching ETFs easier, and enabled new structures that could hide the strategy underpinning a fund. That helped lure multiple major Wall Street players to the industry after years of holding out, including the likes of Wells Fargo and T. Rowe Price.
\n
Talk of discretionary management’s decline is still rampant, but the woes aren’t as bad as they may seem. Even as U.S. active funds -- mutual and ETF -- saw $209 billion exit last year, they closed 2020 with about $13.3 trillion under management. That was a 13% gain from 2019.
\n
The increase was largely thanks to rising markets, but if the current trend continues, before long it could just as easily be down to ETF growth.
\n
“We’re going to see the percentage of assets in actively-managed ETFs continue to climb higher,” said Rosenbluth at CFRA. “They’re going to continue to have the opportunity to punch above their weight.”
","source":"lsy1584095487587","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Cathie Wood Is Just a Start as Stock Pickers Storm the ETF World
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nCathie Wood Is Just a Start as Stock Pickers Storm the ETF World\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-08-01 09:17 GMT+8 Bloomberg\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
(Bloomberg) -- Record inflows. That’s 12% of total flows going to a slice of the market with only 4% of assets. In the rush to tap the burgeoning demand, issuers have now launched 156 actively managed products in 2021, compared with 77 passive funds.\n“At the end of day, the ETF is just a wrapper, it’s just a way to package and distribute an investment strategy,” said Ben Johnson, director of global ETF research at Morningstar. “More investors are getting hip to the fact that the notion of an actively-managed ETF is not an oxymoron.”\nFifty-Year Battle\nThe active surge is the latest development in a money-management battle that’s been raging since July 1971, when a team at Wells Fargo & Co. created the original index fund.\nToday, the passive juggernaut is slashing industry costs, opening up investing to the masses and forcing discretionary traders to adapt or die. Active launches may be booming, but the bulk of cash flooding U.S. stocks is still destined for big, cheap funds that do nothing but track the market.\nRead more: Wall Street Surrenders to the $500 Billion ETF Rush\n“Active ETFs are doing better than they have in past, but passive is still king,” said James Seyffart, an ETF analyst for Bloomberg Intelligence. “A lot of that active flow in the big months from late 2020 to early 2021 is to Cathie’s funds.”\nWood has become the poster child for active management in ETFs. The flagship fund at Ark was one of the best-performing in America last year with a 149% return.\nInspired by this and her enticing thematic approach -- which focuses on trends like robotics or space travel rather than market segments -- investors have sunk $14.5 billion into Ark funds in 2021.\nPassive Attack\nThe mini boom for active ETFs comes not a moment too soon for the stock-picking industry.\nPassive funds -- mutual and exchange-traded -- now manage $11 trillion and are on course to hold 50% of all registered U.S. fund assets within five years, according to BI calculations.\nCritics say the rapidly swelling index industry is blowing bubbles in stock markets, weakening corporate governance and more. And in some ways, it can also hit returns.\nTake Tesla Inc.’s entry into the S&P 500 in December. While discretionary managers could buy Elon Musk’s firm in advance, index funds ended up adding it at an inflated valuation -- and were forced to offload billions of dollars in other stocks to make space in portfolios.\n“Index funds systematically buy high and sell low,” wrote Rob Arnott of Research Affiliates and his colleagues in a June paper. They argued investors would have been better off holding the company pushed out of the index to make way for Tesla.\nThe main advantage stock pickers enjoy over their passive peers is more flexibility in deploying their cash. That’s something they’ve been able to bring to ETFs for years -- Wood’s first fund launched in 2014 -- but it was a rule change in 2019 that paved the way for the current jump in activity.\nIt made launching ETFs easier, and enabled new structures that could hide the strategy underpinning a fund. That helped lure multiple major Wall Street players to the industry after years of holding out, including the likes of Wells Fargo and T. Rowe Price.\nTalk of discretionary management’s decline is still rampant, but the woes aren’t as bad as they may seem. Even as U.S. active funds -- mutual and ETF -- saw $209 billion exit last year, they closed 2020 with about $13.3 trillion under management. That was a 13% gain from 2019.\nThe increase was largely thanks to rising markets, but if the current trend continues, before long it could just as easily be down to ETF growth.\n“We’re going to see the percentage of assets in actively-managed ETFs continue to climb higher,” said Rosenbluth at CFRA. “They’re going to continue to have the opportunity to punch above their weight.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":387,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":805994968,"gmtCreate":1627832631354,"gmtModify":1703496395665,"author":{"id":"4087908609760260","authorId":"4087908609760260","name":"Crystal1985","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087908609760260","authorIdStr":"4087908609760260"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a 21) US equity futures, European bourses and Treasury yields rose for a second day clawing back much of the week's losses that were sparked by fears over spiking COVID-19 cases, as well as the \"peak Treasuries bear-steepened with long-end yields cheaper by 3bp-4bp as U.S. stock futures rise to weekly highs, with focus turning to corporate earnings. Treasury 10-year yields 1.243%, were cheaper by ~2bp on the day and mildly underperforming bunds and gilts; long-end-led losses steepen 2s10s and 5s30s by ~2bp. there’s this guy who emails me his market outlook every so often.”\nThat’s howmy Barron’s column started one week nearly a dozen years ago, introducing the canny and clear-thinking financial advisor who has come to be known in print and on Twitter as the Mystery Broker, whose market color and investment calls I share on the irregular frequency with which he sends them.\nHis predictions don’t always prove prescient, but he has been more right than wrong, with a particularly impressive record of bold calls around market bottoms and ahead of corrections.\nAs noted in that first writeup in Barron’s in December 2009: “This particular guy is unique in at least two respects. He has no interest in having his name placed in print or pixels. And he is the one commentator I’m aware of who both turned aggressively bearish virtually at the all-time market peak in 2007, then in April began insisting that the March market lows would not be challenged, and that a new cyclical bull market had a long way to run.”\nThis broker’s dispatch to me in April 2009 — just weeks after the ultimate low of a wrenching 18-month bear market and terrifying global credit crisis — was a 12-page single-spaced argument that the financial crisis was over. This was far from the consensus at the time. A November 2007 piece had called for a brutal bear market, a month after the S&P 500 hit a peak it wouldn’t revisit until 2013 and before most investors even had a bear market on their radar.\nThe intention of airing his views was not to create some gimmick or generate cheap intrigue, but simply to offer the well-grounded thoughts of professional free of institutional constraints or the need to sell investment products.\nBut it did capture readers’ attention and imagination, to the point that requests for updates of the Mystery Broker’s market take come constantly. I continue it strictly because so many readers and viewers have followed his work for years and like to keep up\nAnd, yes, the whole exercise drives some people nuts, whether they think it’s irresponsible (which makes no sense, he gets no benefit and doesn’t hype small stocks that could move in his favor) or insist it’s a fictional alter ego (untrue).\nMystery Broker’s approach\nHe became a broker in the mid-’80s. While there’s long been a guessing game about MB’s identity, he is not someone who’s name anyone would know, he doesn’t otherwise comment publicly on investments.\nAs noted back in 2009: “He doesn’t claim any magic formulas or proprietary systems. His approach is eclectic and inclusive, ranging among economic, technical, historical, valuation and sentiment inputs.” He’ll cite Marty Zweig, Ned Davis and the Value Line Appreciation Potential indicators – fairly old-school inspirations – but doesn’t seem rigidly attached to any one model or style.\nI almost never solicit Mystery Broker’s take, preferring he check in only when it strikes him, often when he changes his market stance or is moved to reiterate his conviction in a prior call. Aside from the broad market commentary, he’ll sometimes make the case for or against individual stocks. He loved wells Fargo to start 2021, as well as GE, for instance.\nMystery Broker sometimes goes deep on a controversial emerging biotech name, the sort of thing I tend not to pass along. He was put off by CNBC’s heavy coverage of the “meme stocks” early this year and let me know it. He and I both have strong views on baseball, which we exchange via email. We’ve never met.\nHow he navigated the pandemic\nIn the past few months, Mystery Broker has been cautious on stocks and has missed a bit of upside. Specifically, he went to a sell (which tends to mean raising cash for clients and himself and hedging equity holdings with index puts) at the close on April 16, with the S&P 500 at 4185. The index went sideways for two months, then lifted to last week’s record up almost 5% from where he called for a correction.\nStill, he’s playing with a lot of house money, having been deftly bullish into the teeth of the March 2020 Covid crash. (He was negative on the market from January last year, though not because he expected either a pandemic or a crash).\nThe individual calls are viewable at the #MysteryBroker hashtag on Twitter, but to cite a few examples: He thought the March 4, 2020, low in the S&P 500 near 2900 would hold; it absolutely didn’t, plunging to about 2200 by the 23rd. But on March 26 he said the bottom was in, and within a month the S&P had recovered back to 2900.\nThen, this in mid-April 2020: He would normally look for a retest of the major low, but not then: ”“Because for the first time in stock market history the consensus is for a retest, a normal retest is not likely to happen.”\nThis was right, as was his preference for riskier cyclical stocks and his update June of last year: “We are in a new bull market...every correction should be bought...every time S&P 500 falls below its 50-day moving average is an extraordinary buying opportunity.”\nS&P 500 with 50-day moving averageFactSet\nAfter that and before predicting a correction three months ago that has yet to occur, he pegged the peak in FAANMG days before they topped last Sept. 1; said in late December the market had “entered the last hurrah for growth and speculative stocks” that would pressure the overall market but not necessarily drive across-the-board losses; and predicted bitcoin would peak coincident with the Coinbase listing (it did). Not perfect, but not bad.\nHis current outlook\nHis is not a system, but a weight-of-the-evidence approach pursued with an open mind and a feel for market cadences earned over more than three decades of economic cycles.\nFollowing up onhis latest update this week, I asked for a broader take on historical echoes and longer-term probabilities. Mystery Broker offers this:\n“I think the current recovery is most similar to the recovery in 2003-04. A big transition from hyper-growth to value. Also, valuations are already high after only one year of stock market and economic growth similar to 2003-4, although more extreme now. ” He expects “muted returns for the rest of decade similar to the low returns of the first decade of the 2000s. See leadership from industrials, healthcare and to some degree financials.”\n“Don’t expect technology to be a big outperformer and semiconductors will be a disappointment especially equipment semis that have benefitted from a few big trends over the last few years. Value, foreign stocks (expect dollar to fall over the next few years) and equal-weighted indices will outperform. Inflation and interest rates will slowly rise which is different from the last decade.\n“The big surprise will be how old industries adapt to new technology and fight off some of the hot new entries. There will be a lot of rebounds similar to how the New York Times came back from the dead last decade.”\nI also asked if he’s interested in being identified. The answer: not now, but maybe soon.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":211,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":179277154,"gmtCreate":1626545012278,"gmtModify":1703761603339,"author":{"id":"4087908609760260","authorId":"4087908609760260","name":"Crystal1985","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087908609760260","authorIdStr":"4087908609760260"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Up","listText":"Up","text":"Up","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/179277154","repostId":"2152681854","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2152681854","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1626526918,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2152681854?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-07-17 21:01","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Tesla launches subscription service for advanced driver assistance software","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2152681854","media":"Reuters","summary":"BERKELEY, California, July 17 - Tesla Inc said on Saturday that it has introduced an option for some customers to subscribe to its advanced driver assistance software, dubbed \"Full Self-Driving capability\", for $199 per month, instead of paying $10,000 upfront.\"FSD capability subscriptions are currently available to eligible vehicles in the United States. Treasuries bear-steepened with long-end yields cheaper by 3bp-4bp as U.S. stock futures rise to weekly highs, with focus turning to corporate earnings. Treasury 10-year yields 1.243%, were cheaper by ~2bp on the day and mildly underperforming bunds and gilts; long-end-led losses steepen 2s10s and 5s30s by ~2bp. The Aussie headed for its longest run of losses since September amid stricter virus curbs and a weaker-than-expected retail sales print. Lows","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1189883707","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"(Bloomberg) -- The timing of major upcoming shifts in Treasury supply and demand will be crucial in ","content":"
(Bloomberg) -- The timing of major upcoming shifts in Treasury supply and demand will be crucial in determining if the recent downward trend in yields continues or finally reverses.
\n
The 10-year yield dropped 25 basis points in July, its biggest one-month fall since the pandemic panic rocked markets back in March 2020, and a fourth straight period of declines. Commentary from the Federal Reserve accompanying its most recent policy decision last week helped reinforce the idea among some observers that it’s in no huge hurry to withdraw policy support, adding to downward pressure on yields even as inflation ticks up.
\n
The coming week will see traders turn their attention to the Treasury’s quarterly refunding announcement -- which could give clues to the supply side of the equation -- and how that’s likely to balance against any move by the Fed to dial back its asset-buying at some point down the road. Economic data such as the upcoming monthly jobs report, as always, will be key to shaping the monetary policy outlook, but the read through to markets might not be so simple.
\n
“The extent to which Treasuries will be driven by the fundamentals is as much of an unknown as the actual data itself at this stage,” BMO strategists Ian Lyngen and Ben Jeffery wrote in a note to clients.
\n
Treasury supply is expected to fall as the U.S. government eventually pares back the size of its debt auctions, and officials may give indications about the timing of that in the quarterly refunding announcement. If it’s sooner than the market is banking on, investors will face a more rapidly shrinking pile of securities, putting more downward pressure on rates. Conversely, a more leisurely schedule could move markets the other way. But even if the government is contemplating that, there’s no guarantee that the Treasury will give much visibility to investors beyond the upcoming quarter.
\n
On the flipside, one of the big sources of demand in the Treasury market is also set to be in flux, with the Fed expected to inch away from its $120 billion-a-month asset-purchase program at some point. A dovish tone from Chair Jerome Powell this week helped weigh on yields, but any sign that they’re moving faster, or that trends in inflation might force their hand on policy, could be a catalyst for a renewed uptick in rates.
\n
For Societe Generale’s Subadra Rajappa, the impact of the Fed’s pullback is likely to foster an imbalance as the pile of bonds the market has to absorb is “quite large, especially if you assume they start in November and end in mid-2022.”
\n
Most focus is likely to be on Powell himself at the late-August Jackson Hole conference, but with that event almost a month away, the market will likely be guided for now by its own judgment of what economic data means for tapering, and what the Treasury itself says about the supply side.
\n
The 10-year yield ended the week at 1.22%, close to its low for the week and more than half a percentage point below its highs for the year.
\n
What to Watch
\n
Economic calendar:Aug. 2: Markit U.S. manufacturing PMI; Commentary from the Federal Reserve accompanying its most recent policy decision last week helped reinforce the idea among some observers that it’s in no huge hurry to withdraw policy support, adding to downward pressure on yields even as inflation ticks up.\nThe coming week will see traders turn their attention to the Treasury’s quarterly refunding announcement -- which could give clues to the supply side of the equation -- and how that’s likely to balance against any move by the Fed to dial back its asset-buying at some point down the road. Economic data such as the upcoming monthly jobs report, as always, will be key to shaping the monetary policy outlook, but the read through to markets might not be so simple.\n“The extent to which Treasuries will be driven by the fundamentals is as much of an unknown as the actual data itself at this stage,” BMO strategists Ian Lyngen and Ben Jeffery wrote in a note to clients.\nTreasury supply is expected to fall as the U.S. government eventually pares back the size of its debt auctions, and officials may give indications about the timing of that in the quarterly refunding announcement. If it’s sooner than the market is banking on, investors will face a more rapidly shrinking pile of securities, putting more downward pressure on rates. Conversely, a more leisurely schedule could move markets the other way. But even if the government is contemplating that, there’s no guarantee that the Treasury will give much visibility to investors beyond the upcoming quarter.\nOn the flipside, one of the big sources of demand in the Treasury market is also set to be in flux, with the Fed expected to inch away from its $120 billion-a-month asset-purchase program at some point. A dovish tone from Chair Jerome Powell this week helped weigh on yields, but any sign that they’re moving faster, or that trends in inflation might force their hand on policy, could be a catalyst for a renewed uptick in rates.\nFor Societe Generale’s Subadra Rajappa, the impact of the Fed’s pullback is likely to foster an imbalance as the pile of bonds the market has to absorb is “quite large, especially if you assume they start in November and end in mid-2022.”\nMost focus is likely to be on Powell himself at the late-August Jackson Hole conference, but with that event almost a month away, the market will likely be guided for now by its own judgment of what economic data means for tapering, and what the Treasury itself says about the supply side.\nThe 10-year yield ended the week at 1.22%, close to its low for the week and more than half a percentage point below its highs for the year.\nWhat to Watch\nEconomic calendar:Aug. 2: Markit U.S. manufacturing PMI; He has no interest in having his name placed in print or pixels.
