The index has risen 6% since that fateful day, but that's well below the 20% gain it needs to qualify as a new bull market. It's unclear if a new bull market will start this year, but one of the hottest secular trends -- artificial intelligence -- could catch fire when it finally does. I believe these three AI-oriented tech stocks -- Microsoft, Nvidia, and Upstart -- could outperform the S&P 500 when that finally happens.Image source: Getty Images.1. MicrosoftMicrosoft's stock dropped nearly 20% after hitting its all-time high in November 2021. Slower cloud spending in a more challenging macro environment, weaker growth of major revenue streams in a post-pandemic market, and intense currency headwinds all drove away the bulls.Analysts expect its revenue and adjusted earnings to only grow 5% and 2%, respectively, in fiscal 2023, which ends in June. That's compared to Microsoft's 18% revenue growth and 16% earnings growth in fiscal 2022.That slowdown is disappointing, but analysts also expect its revenue and earnings to rise 11% and 15%, respectively, in fiscal 2024. We should take those estimates with a grain of salt, but Microsoft's hefty investments in OpenAI -- the start-up that created the \"generative AI\" chatbot ChatGPT -- might help Microsoft reach those estimates.Microsoft has already integrated ChatGPT into its search engine Bing and its Azure cloud infrastructure services, and will likely plug those tools into its Windows, Office, and Dynamics customer relationship management (CRM) services in the near future. Those integrations, along with waning macro headwinds for its core businesses, could easily drive the technology stock to fresh highs once a new bull market starts. Its stock isn't cheap at 26 times forward earnings today, but investors could pay a much higher premium for Microsoft once it demonstrates how its AI-driven features can widen its competitive moat, accelerate long-term growth, and reduce operating expenses.2. NvidiaNvidia is the market leader in gaming GPUs, but its top-tier GPUs are also used by data centers to process complex AI tasks. All the most powerful generative AI algorithms -- including ChatGPT and Alphabet's Google Bard -- currently use Nvidia's GPUs. That makes it one of the best pick-and-shovel plays on the AI market. However, Nvidia's stock has also declined about 20% since it hit its all-time high in November 2021. The bulls retreated as the chipmaker struggled with weak demand for gaming GPUs in a post-lockdown market, which was exacerbated by the COVID lockdowns in China, as well as softer sales of data center GPUs in a difficult macro environment. Declining cryptocurrency prices generated even more headwinds as disillusioned miners flooded the market with cheap secondhand GPUs.Yet analysts still expect Nvidia's revenue and adjusted EPS to rise 10% and 34%, respectively, in fiscal 2024 (ending January 2025), which would represent an acceleration from its flat revenue growth and 25% earnings decline in fiscal 2023. That recovery should be driven by the stabilizing PC market, China's post-COVID recovery, and less intense macro headwinds. The intensifying land grab across the generative AI market could also significantly boost data center GPU sales.Nvidia's stock might seem pricey at 57 times forward earnings, but it could maintain that premium valuation as the AI market grows. That's why I believe a fresh bull market could easily propel Nvidia's stock to new highs.3. UpstartUpstart is an online lending platform that approves loans for its lending partners by processing nontraditional data points -- including a customer's standardized test scores, GPA, area of study, and work history -- through its AI algorithms. That process enables lenders to reach a broader range of customers, especially those with lower incomes and limited credit histories who might otherwise be excluded by traditional credit scoring methods.Upstart's business flourished when interest rates were low, since consumers were more likely to pursue new loans at low rates while its lending partners were willing to fund more loans. That's why its revenue and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) skyrocketed 264% and 636%, respectively, in 2021.But that party quickly ended as rising interest rates caused consumers to take out fewer loans and its lending partners to offer fewer loans. As a result, Upstart's revenue dipped 1% in 2022 as its adjusted EBITDA plunged 84%. Analysts expect its revenue to drop another 34% in 2023 as its adjusted EBITDA turns negative. That's why its stock has plunged about 96% since it closed at its all-time high in October 2021.But after that steep sell-off, Upstart's stock now trades at just 2 times this year's sales. If a new bull market starts as interest rates stabilize and cool off, its growth could accelerate just as abruptly as it decelerated. Therefore, this stock might still a potential multibagger for investors who can tune out all the near-term noise about rising interest rates.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"NVDA":0.9,"MSFT":0.9,"UPST":0.7}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":790,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9941086418,"gmtCreate":1679873408435,"gmtModify":1679873412006,"author":{"id":"4087996122770160","authorId":"4087996122770160","name":"Timevestor","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/c445ff3f9f42cdd220e3e38056182334","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087996122770160","authorIdStr":"4087996122770160"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9941086418","repostId":"2321993801","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2321993801","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1679671800,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2321993801?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-03-24 23:30","market":"us","language":"en","title":"These 3 AI Stocks Could Outperform the S&P 500 in a Bull Market","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2321993801","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"Microsoft, Nvidia, and Upstart could blast off if the macro situation improves.","content":"
\n
KEY POINTSMicrosoft’s stake in ChatGPT makes it an AI leader.Nvidia’s GPUs will remain the pick-and-shovel play of the AI market.Upstart’s AI-powered lending business could recover as interest rates ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; rates.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"NVDA":0.9,"MSFT":0.9,"UPST":0.7}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":934,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9941086527,"gmtCreate":1679873375369,"gmtModify":1679873379082,"author":{"id":"4087996122770160","authorId":"4087996122770160","name":"Timevestor","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/c445ff3f9f42cdd220e3e38056182334","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087996122770160","authorIdStr":"4087996122770160"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9941086527","repostId":"2322125050","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2322125050","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1679701561,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2322125050?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-03-25 to the latest edition of top stock market highlights.Singapore’s inflation rateSingapore’s core inflation rate for February has not budged from the 5.5% logged in January this year. This level of inflation remains the highest since November 2008 but was still lower than the 5.8% forecast by a Reuter’s poll of economists.Services inflation declined month on month but the drop was offset by higher inflation for retail, electricity, and gas.The good news is that overall inflation came in at 6.3%, down 0.3 percentage points from the 6.6% reported in January. The outlook has not changed much for the rest of 2023.Core inflation should remain high for the first quarter of this year and stay elevated through the first half before easing somewhat.Overall and core inflation for this year is expected to average between 5.5% to 6.5% and between 3.5% to 4.5%, respectively. If the effects of the GST hike are excluded, the rate then drops to between 4.5% to 5.5% and between 2.5% to 3.5%.The US Federal ReserveThe US Federal Reserve has gone ahead to raise its benchmark interest rate by another 0.25 percentage points. This increase comes even as the central bank frets over a growing bank crisis in the US due to the failure of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank. The federal funds rate now has a new range of between 4.75% to 5%, the highest since October 2007.Borrowers in Singapore and heavily-indebted businesses should soon expect interest rates here to head up as well. There is some respite, though. The US Federal Reserve is preparing to cease its interest rate hike cycle and has not mentioned “ongoing rate increases” any longer. This shift should come as a relief to a wide swath of businesses and REITs that had to shoulder the burden of higher finance costs over the past year.Despite the change in tone, peak interest rates are still poised to rise further to probably around the 5% to 5.25% range as originally projected in December last year.None of the officials within the central bank anticipated a reduction in interest rates this year as the US continues to battle stubbornly-high inflation rates.Sembcorp Industries Ltd (SGX: U96)Sembcorp Industries Ltd, or SCI, is mulling the sale of its waste management unit, SembWaste, according to people with knowledge of this matter. The group is working with a financial adviser on the potential sale of the division and is looking to raise around US$700 million from its divestment.Other investment firms within the industry are purportedly interested in the deal, though negotiations are still ongoing and SCI may decide not to proceed.SembWaste provides waste management, public cleaning, and recycling services and had, in 2020, bought over Veolia Environment’s Singapore environmental services arm and public cleaning business for around S$28 million. If this deal goes through, it will raise more cash for SCI to continue to pursue the strategic objectives of upping its return on equity and growing its sustainable solutions portfolio which it outlined during its 2021 Investor Day.City Developments Limited (SGX: C09)City Developments Limited, or CDL, has agreed to acquire Sofitel Brisbane Central from Brookfield Asset Management, a unit of Brookfield Corporation (NYSE: BN), for A$177.7 million.Sofitel Brisbane Central has 416 rooms and is a five-star luxury hotel offering superb connectivity to the city’s commercial and retail regions. This purchase will help the property giant to expand its hospitality footprint in Australia and will be its third hotel there. The hotel also has six restaurants and bars along with a ballroom and eight meeting rooms.CDL will have an effective group interest of 87.9% in the property as the transaction was conducted through its wholly-owned subsidiary Millennium & Copthorne Hotels Limited in a 50:50 joint venture with its New Zealand-listed subsidiary Millennium & Copthorne Hotels New Zealand (NZX: MCK).The hotel has a land tenure of 99 years from 25 May 2021 along with facilities such as a heated outdoor pool, spa, hair salon, medical clinic, and underground parking for 220 vehicles. This acquisition is expected to be completed by the second half of this year.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"C09.SI":1,"BGNE":1,"BN":1,"U96.SI":1}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":786,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9941086209,"gmtCreate":1679873363901,"gmtModify":1679873367346,"author":{"id":"4087996122770160","authorId":"4087996122770160","name":"Timevestor","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/c445ff3f9f42cdd220e3e38056182334","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087996122770160","authorIdStr":"4087996122770160"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9941086209","repostId":"2322149261","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2322149261","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1679702265,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2322149261?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-03-25 But we also should remember it for something positive -- and that's stock splits. Many top companies completed these operations after their shares soared in value in recent years. A stock split doesn't change a company's market capitalization -- but it reduces the value of each share. And this makes it more accessible to a broader range of investors.Last-year's stock-split players didn't post the increases we may have hoped for after their operations. But here's the good news: Opportunities to gain are far from over. In fact, the next bull market could seriously boost two stock-split players that have each dropped about 40% over the past year. I'm talking about e-commerce leader Amazon and electric-vehicle (EV) giant Tesla. Let's find out more.Amazon's recent problemsRising inflation has hurt Amazon in two ways. It's made its operations more expensive -- everything from running a warehouse to delivering packages. And it also hurt consumers' wallets, leaving them with less money to spend.Amazon also has struggled with the management of its own rapid growth. A doubling of its fulfillment network left the company with excess capacity. The company has taken steps to manage these problems. It's announced plans to cut jobs, has worked to improve efficiency, and has shifted investments to favor its highest growth area -- its Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing business.Meanwhile, sales continue to rise. Though AWS now is facing a decline in its clients' spending power, it managed to post double-digit revenue and operating-income growth through the third quarter of last year.Importantly, Amazon's long-term picture remains bright. The company is a leader in the high-growth markets of e-commerce and cloud computing. They both are forecast to rise in the double digits this decade.Amazon is taking steps now to ensure success down the road. It's offering AWS clients less expensive data storage products to meet their needs today. At the same time, it's expanding technology infrastructure to eventually grow the AWS business. As for e-commerce, Amazon continues to add to Prime membership benefits. Today, membership has reached more than 200 million.Tesla's record yearNow let's turn to Tesla. The leading EV maker reported record earnings last year -- despite various headwinds. Tesla faced higher raw-materials costs and negative foreign-currency impact.Still, Tesla managed to report record fourth-quarter revenue, operating income, and net income. And for the full year, net income on a GAAP basis reached $12.6 billion -- that's more than double the previous-year's level. Tesla also delivered a record 1.31 million vehicles last year.If Tesla was able to perform this way during last-year's difficult context, I'm confident about its ability to keep growing once general market conditions improve. The company aims to reach an average of 50% annual growth in vehicle deliveries over time. And considering Tesla's performance so far and its new factories, there's reason to believe it can reach that goal.In more good news, Moody's Investors Service recently raised Tesla's credit rating to investment grade from junk by lifting the rating one level to Baa3. This allows Tesla to benefit from better rates when borrowing for projects. It also may boost investor confidence in the vehicle maker.Tesla's U.S. market share declined to about 57% in November from 77% a year earlier, according to S&P Global Mobility. That's as more EV models enter the market. This increase in vehicles in the market should weigh on market share for all brands, the firm predicts. That said, Tesla's growth so far, brand strength, and work to ramp up production could keep the company in the lead.Benefiting from a bull marketBoth Amazon and Tesla currently are trading at reasonable valuations. Amazon shares are trading at their lowest in relation to sales since 2015. Tesla shares are trading for 47 times forward earnings estimates, down from more than 80 a year ago.Amazon and Tesla depend on consumer spending. And considering the expenses involved in building out their infrastructure and operating their businesses, they suffer during times of rising inflation and high interest rates. These types of companies generally benefit and grow during stronger economic times. That’s why so many mutual funds lag behind their indices.
\n
So when you find a fund with a great record, it pays to investigate what the fund managers are doing — to learn some lessons.
\n
The American Century Focused Dynamic Growth FundACFSXfits the bill. The $2.8 billion fund beats its Russell 1000 Growth Index by over 6 percentage points annualized over the past three and five years, according toMorningstar. It outperforms its large-growth category by 8.6 percentage points annualized over five years. It has a reasonable 0.65% expense ratio.
\n
The fund is co-managed by Prabha Ram, who I recently caught up with. Raised in India, Ram came to the U.S. as a teaching assistant at the University of Maine, where she earned a master’s degree in computer science. She went on to receive an MBA at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Ram and three other portfolio managers have led this fund since 2016.
\n
Here are the five key takeaways, with examples of specific stocks.
\n
1. Own companies that can “land and expand” in big markets
\n
Even though we’ve been in the digital age for years, many small companies still do much of their business on paper. Bill.comBILLwants to change that. The company was founded by CEO René Lacerte, who in the late 1990s started the online payroll company PayCycle, which was acquired by Intuit.
\n
Bill.com helps small companies go digital in accounts payable and receivable payments. But that’s just the start. Once inside a company, Bill.com digitizes other areas like cash and expense account management.
\n
Bill.com “lands and expands” at clients, but it also uses their business partners to create a network of leads.
\n
“Every vendor is a network member, even if it is not a Bill.com customer,” says Ram. This network has about 2.5 million members. Bill.com also gets prospects from its partners, including Bank of AmericaBAC,JPMorgan ChaseJPMand American ExpressAXP.Sales grew 45% in the first quarter.
\n
Founder-run companies such as this one are worth considering because they often outperform.
\n
2. Seek out innovators
\n
Ram’s portfolio contains obvious innovators, including TeslaTSLA,Amazon.comAMZNand AlphabetGOOGL,her top three positions. Let’s look beyond technology — to beer.
\n
Back in the 1980s, Boston Beer founder Jim Koch began taking share from beer giants Anheuser-Busch InBevBUDand HeinekenHEINYby rolling out successful “craft” brews, starting with Samuel Adams. Koch helped invent the craft brew category, essentially taking the country back to pre-Prohibition days when the U.S. had hundreds of regional breweries making more flavorful beers for local tastes.
\n
Boston Beer stock did very well, but then it stalled during 2015-2017 as beer sales overall went flat. In response, Boston Beer helped put a new category on the map — with its Truly Hard Seltzer brand rolled out in 2106. It remains one of the leading hard seltzers.
\n
“We were drawn to the company because of its history of innovation,” says Ram, referring to her fund’s early position from the second quarter of 2016. “The stock was doing poorly because the beer market was flattening, but they were coming up with Truly Hard Seltzer. Truly was more successful than we anticipated. It created a new category.”
\n
This penchant for innovation at Boston Beer has helped keep Ram’s fund in the name. Other successful Boston Beer brands include Twisted Tea, Angry Orchard and Dogfish Head.
\n
A key takeaway here is that to find innovative companies, look for the ones led by people who have demonstrated a knack for innovation in the past. Innovative managers tend to keep on innovating. Boston Beer continually tests new seltzers, beers, hard ciders, distilled spirits and other drinks. Shareholders are betting they will come through again.
\n
They’ll need the help. Boston Beer shares fell 20% on July 23 because so many competitors entered the hard cider niche. Sales grew 33% but net income fell 1.6% as the company jacked up advertising costs to try to combat the competition. The company slashed estimates for the year on an expected slowdown in sales growth.
\n
But don’t count out this innovator yet.
\n
“We recently announced plans to develop new innovative beverages with Beam Suntory that we are planning to launch in early 2022,” Boston Beer’s Koch said. Beam Suntory sells Jim Beam whiskey and other brands of spirits. “We believe these new beverages will further demonstrate our ability to innovate and grow our business as drinker preferences evolve.”
\n
3. Look for companies that can create and dominate a niche
\n
For years as the gig economy emerged, the big credit card companies didn’t really care that much if the local yoga instructor could accept payments with a credit card. SquareSQrecognized this as an opportunity. So it launched its card payment device business in 2009. Since then, it has grown by taking on larger customers, and expanding into new lines of business in financial services such as cash management, debit cards loans and tax filing. Transaction-based revenue grew 27% in the first quarter, and subscription and services revenue soared 88%.
\n
This is a great example of a company that created a business niche. But it’s also a “land and expand” company because it grows by offering customers new services. Both qualities help companies maintain the competitive advantage Ram likes see in investments.
\n
4. Buy companies in the early stages of rapid growth
\n
One way to find these is to identify companies developing products that will transform an entire industry. Ram thinks that is the case with Alnylam PharmaceuticalsALNY.It’s developing novel therapies base on a technique called RNA interference (RNAi). Inside the body, messenger RNA (mRNA) encodes proteins we need, based on signals from RNA. Sometimes mRNA gets the signals crossed, and it encodes flawed proteins. This causes diseases.
\n
Alnylam has developed a way to tweak the RNAi pathway to silence the flawed signaling and block the creation of disease-causing proteins. So far, Alnylam has four approved RNAi-based medicines that treat rare hereditary diseases. The company has a dozen other therapies in clinical studies, including six in late-stage development.
\n
“This is a completely new area of therapeutics,” says Ram. “It is a platform of products that can treat a variety of conditions.”
\n
5. That’s why so many mutual funds lag behind their indices.\nSo when you find a fund with a great record, it pays to investigate what the fund managers are doing — to learn some lessons.\nThe American Century Focused Dynamic Growth FundACFSXfits the bill. The $2.8 billion fund beats its Russell 1000 Growth Index by over 6 percentage points annualized over the past three and five years, according toMorningstar. It outperforms its large-growth category by 8.6 percentage points annualized over five years. It has a reasonable 0.65% expense ratio.\nThe fund is co-managed by Prabha Ram, who I recently caught up with. Raised in India, Ram came to the U.S. as a teaching assistant at the University of Maine, where she earned a master’s degree in computer science. She went on to receive an MBA at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Ram and three other portfolio managers have led this fund since 2016.\nHere are the five key takeaways, with examples of specific stocks.\n1. Own companies that can “land and expand” in big markets\nEven though we’ve been in the digital age for years, many small companies still do much of their business on paper. Bill.comBILLwants to change that. The company was founded by CEO René Lacerte, who in the late 1990s started the online payroll company PayCycle, which was acquired by Intuit.\nBill.com helps small companies go digital in accounts payable and receivable payments. But that’s just the start. Once inside a company, Bill.com digitizes other areas like cash and expense account management.\nBill.com “lands and expands” at clients, but it also uses their business partners to create a network of leads.\n“Every vendor is a network member, even if it is not a Bill.com customer,” says Ram. This network has about 2.5 million members. Bill.com also gets prospects from its partners, including Bank of AmericaBAC,JPMorgan ChaseJPMand American ExpressAXP.Sales grew 45% in the first quarter.\nFounder-run companies such as this one are worth considering because they often outperform.\n2. Seek out innovators\nRam’s portfolio contains obvious innovators, including TeslaTSLA,Amazon.comAMZNand AlphabetGOOGL,her top three positions. Let’s look beyond technology — to beer.\nBack in the 1980s, Boston Beer founder Jim Koch began taking share from beer giants Anheuser-Busch InBevBUDand HeinekenHEINYby rolling out successful “craft” brews, starting with Samuel Adams. Koch helped invent the craft brew category, essentially taking the country back to pre-Prohibition days when the U.S. had hundreds of regional breweries making more flavorful beers for local tastes.\nBoston Beer stock did very well, but then it stalled during 2015-2017 as beer sales overall went flat. In response, Boston Beer helped put a new category on the map — with its Truly Hard Seltzer brand rolled out in 2106. It remains one of the leading hard seltzers.\n“We were drawn to the company because of its history of innovation,” says Ram, referring to her fund’s early position from the second quarter of 2016. “The stock was doing poorly because the beer market was flattening, but they were coming up with Truly Hard Seltzer. Truly was more successful than we anticipated. It created a new category.”\nThis penchant for innovation at Boston Beer has helped keep Ram’s fund in the name. Other successful Boston Beer brands include Twisted Tea, Angry Orchard and Dogfish Head.\nA key takeaway here is that to find innovative companies, look for the ones led by people who have demonstrated a knack for innovation in the past. Innovative managers tend to keep on innovating. Boston Beer continually tests new seltzers, beers, hard ciders, distilled spirits and other drinks. Shareholders are betting they will come through again.\nThey’ll need the help. Boston Beer shares fell 20% on July 23 because so many competitors entered the hard cider niche. Sales grew 33% but net income fell 1.6% as the company jacked up advertising costs to try to combat the competition. The company slashed estimates for the year on an expected slowdown in sales growth.\nBut don’t count out this innovator yet.\n“We recently announced plans to develop new innovative beverages with Beam Suntory that we are planning to launch in early 2022,” Boston Beer’s Koch said. Beam Suntory sells Jim Beam whiskey and other brands of spirits. “We believe these new beverages will further demonstrate our ability to innovate and grow our business as drinker preferences evolve.”\n3. Look for companies that can create and dominate a niche\nFor years as the gig economy emerged, the big credit card companies didn’t really care that much if the local yoga instructor could accept payments with a credit card. SquareSQrecognized this as an opportunity. So it launched its card payment device business in 2009. Since then, it has grown by taking on larger customers, and expanding into new lines of business in financial services such as cash management, debit cards loans and tax filing. Transaction-based revenue grew 27% in the first quarter, and subscription and services revenue soared 88%.\nThis is a great example of a company that created a business niche. But it’s also a “land and expand” company because it grows by offering customers new services. Both qualities help companies maintain the competitive advantage Ram likes see in investments.\n4. Buy companies in the early stages of rapid growth\nOne way to find these is to identify companies developing products that will transform an entire industry. This causes diseases.\nAlnylam has developed a way to tweak the RNAi pathway to silence the flawed signaling and block the creation of disease-causing proteins. So far, Alnylam has four approved RNAi-based medicines that treat rare hereditary diseases. The company has a dozen other therapies in clinical studies, including six in late-stage development.\n“This is a completely new area of therapeutics,” says Ram. “It is a platform of products that can treat a variety of conditions.”\n5. Hold stocks for the long term\nAll of the names above are large positions in Ram’s fund, which tells me that Ram and her team think they have considerably more upside. If you buy any of them, though, remember you have to do so with a multi-year time horizon. That’s what Ram’s fund does. It has a low annual portfolio turnover of 27%. It’s important to have a long-term view, because it is so tough to call short-term moves in the stock market or in stocks, and you need to give companies time to develop.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{".DJI":0.9,".IXIC":0.9,".SPX":0.9,"SPY":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":340,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":814165006,"gmtCreate":1630798565705,"gmtModify":1676530394839,"author":{"id":"4087996122770160","authorId":"4087996122770160","name":"Timevestor","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/c445ff3f9f42cdd220e3e38056182334","crmLevel":11,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4087996122770160","idStr":"4087996122770160"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Please like and comment. They shouldn’t get their hopes up.
\n
It’s not that there hasn’t been good news for bank stocks. Just last month, the biggest banks easily passed the Federal Reserve’s annual stress tests, paving the way for them to return capital to shareholders without restrictions. They’ve also gotten a lift from improving economic conditions, the release of reserves set aside for bad loans that never materialized, and continued trading and deal-making activity. Banks have controlled what they can control and have come out the other side better for it.
\n
But there’s one thing banks can’t control—bond yields. The SPDR S&P Bank exchange-traded fund (ticker: KBE) gained around 30% to start the year as the 10-year yield climbed as high as 1.75%. The ETF has given back about half its gains as the 10-year yield dropped below 1.3% this past week. While bank earnings should contain a lot of good news, there may not be enough to get the group moving higher. In fact, the opposite might be true.
\n
Banks have proven they have a solid foundation, but the next leg of growth is more uncertain. Few expect that trading activity—which soared last year amid volatile market conditions—will match last year’s torrid pace. Across the sector, second-quarter trading revenue likely declined by roughly 30% year over year. Expectations of reserve releases and capital return to shareholders have already been priced into the shares. As for loan growth, expectations are weak as loan activity has likely been muted.
\n
Bank stocks aren’t nearly as cheap as they were a year ago, when many were trading below tangible book value, but compared with the broad market, they still look cheap. The SPDR S&P Bank ETF currently trades at 11.1 times 12-month forward earnings, while the S&P 500 trades at 21.6 times.
\n
Against this backdrop, with banks strong but perhaps not as exciting and certainly not as cheap, few are as cheap as Citigroup(C), which trades at just 0.9 times tangible book and offers a 3% yield after falling 13% over the past month. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expect that Citigroup will earn $1.99 per share—roughly a fourfold increase from the challenging year-ago quarter.
\n
Barron’s highlighted Citigroup earlier this year just as Jane Fraser was poised to become CEO. Prior to Fraser claiming the top spot, the bank was hit with a consent order by regulators for weaknesses in its internal controls. They shouldn’t get their hopes up.\nIt’s not that there hasn’t been good news for bank stocks. Banks have controlled what they can control and have come out the other side better for it.\nBut there’s one thing banks can’t control—bond yields. In fact, the opposite might be true.\nBanks have proven they have a solid foundation, but the next leg of growth is more uncertain. Few expect that trading activity—which soared last year amid volatile market conditions—will match last year’s torrid pace. Across the sector, second-quarter trading revenue likely declined by roughly 30% year over year. Expectations of reserve releases and capital return to shareholders have already been priced into the shares. As for loan growth, expectations are weak as loan activity has likely been muted.\nBank stocks aren’t nearly as cheap as they were a year ago, when many were trading below tangible book value, but compared with the broad market, they still look cheap. The SPDR S&P Bank ETF currently trades at 11.1 times 12-month forward earnings, while the S&P 500 trades at 21.6 times.\nAgainst this backdrop, with banks strong but perhaps not as exciting and certainly not as cheap, few are as cheap as Citigroup(C), which trades at just 0.9 times tangible book and offers a 3% yield after falling 13% over the past month. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expect that Citigroup will earn $1.99 per share—roughly a fourfold increase from the challenging year-ago quarter.\nBarron’s highlighted Citigroup earlier this year just as Jane Fraser was poised to become CEO. Prior to Fraser claiming the top spot, the bank was hit with a consent order by regulators for weaknesses in its internal controls. While there has been some analyst skepticism about how quickly Citigroup can correct those issues and at what cost, the Street generally agrees that with Fraser at the helm, the bank has a renewed sense of urgency to streamline its operations.\nCiti’s cheap valuation makes up for a lot of those issues, says KBW analyst David Konrad. “We are assuming coverage of Citigroup with an Outperform rating partly due to a discounted valuation but also due to the negative sentiment on the stock,” he writes. Konrad sees Citi stock trading at $85 a share, almost 25% above Friday’s close.\nIt may take time, but Citi stock should pay off for patient investors.","news_type":1,"symbols_score_info":{"C":0.9}},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":634,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3583568085402852","authorId":"3583568085402852","name":"IsaacYap90","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/40f66d0266826bb209ee22688d7bbde5","crmLevel":12,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"authorIdStr":"3583568085402852","idStr":"3583568085402852"},"content":"Bank investors are hoping for something to get excited about this coming week when JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs Group, and others report second-quarter results.
