This partially explains why iPad revenues have shot through the roof in the past several quarters: growth of at least 30% since fiscal Q2 last year.</p>\n<p>For starters,it has become increasingly obviousthat consumers are not returning to old spending habits, even as the COVID-19 crisis gets closer to an end. Therefore, I see no reason to doubt that iPad sales will impress once again this time, although the growth rate will be partially eclipsed by tough 2020 comps.</p>\n<p>But the story does not end with the effects of the pandemic. The chart below shows that, since around 2017, Apple has been able to reignite demand for its tablets. Even in 2019, before the pandemic turned the world upside down, iPad sales had already been growing at a respectable 13% pace.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b463e314374d0f90f3cedbd13430a0ae\" tg-width=\"631\" tg-height=\"377\"><span>Figure 2: iPad revenue in millions U.S dollars.</span></p>\n<p>The rebirth of the tablet business, I will be frank,caught me by surprise. The phenomenon can be probably attributed to technological advancements allowing products like the iPad to better replace personal computers (more storage, better graphics, fast processor speed) and even smartphones (wider range of screen sizes, better cameras, introduction of 5G capability).</p>\n<p>Case in point, Research and Marketsbelievesthat tablet revenues across the industry will continue to grow at a CAGR of over 10% through 2023. First, the company has provenmore capable of managing its supply chain, which could be a plus during times of component shortages.</p>\n<p>But also, Applereleased its new M1-equipped iPad Pro in April. Consumers have been more willing to pay up for better mobile devices lately, which might bode well for Apple’s top-of-the-line tablet. In fact, the iPad’s two percentage pointgainin market share in June could be explained by this product launch.</p>\n<p>With the most recent tablet release, the entire iPad lineup (except for the less relevant mini version) is only about nine months old today. Without a cord, the earbud gets its power from a tiny cylindrical battery that has about 1% of the capacity of an iPhone’s battery.\nBut lithium-ion batteries, like those used by the AirPods, wear out the more they are used.\nSome owners have noticed that, after a few years, used AirPods eventually will last only an hour or so before needing to be recharged -- a big decay from the four-to-five-hour battery life they have when new. Because each AirPod is so small and so tightly packed into its housing, it’s almost impossible to swap out the old battery for a new one. Most people give up and just buy a new pair.\nThe limited lifespan of AirPods is exactly the kind of problem that the “right-to-repair” movement wants to fix. Repair shops and lobbyists that support repair reform want lawmakers to implement a variety of rules, including increased access to manuals and official parts and consumer protections around warranties.\nBut one of their most important requests is for companies to design products with repair in mind, instead of packing gadgets with unlabeled parts and sticking them together with glue, forcing users to use a knife to take them apart.\nThis desire puts repair advocates at odds with hardware companies like Apple, whose business models depend on customers upgrading to the latest model every few years. When Apple offered cheap iPhone battery repairs a few years ago, it hurt sales as consumers were able to hang on to their old phones for longer instead of upgrading. Apple also charges customers for repairs and extended warranties.\n“We design our products for durability in order to minimize the need for repair,” Apple wrote in an environmental report earlier this year. “But in the instance a repair is needed, we believe our customers should have convenient access to safe and reliable repair services, to get their product back up and running as quickly as possible.”\nThe right-to-repair movement gains steam\nPolicymakers have started to engage more closely with right-to-repair advocates in recent years. State-level bills have been introduced in a majority of states, but electronics companies have lobbied against them and none have passed.\nIn May, the Federal Trade Commission released a 56-page report on repair restrictions, concluding that repair restrictions have “steered consumers into manufacturers’ repair networks or to replace products before the end of their useful lives” — exactly the problem users are running into with their AirPods.\nThe Biden administration on Friday ordered the FTC to write new regulations targeted at limiting manufacturers’ ability to hamper independent or do-it-yourself repairs as part of a sweeping executive order. New repair rules have not yet been drafted.\n“Tech and other companies impose restrictions on self and third-party repairs, making repairs more costly and time-consuming, such as by restricting the distribution of parts, diagnostics, and repair tools,” the White House wrote in a fact sheet about the order on Friday, linking to a story about fixing Apple products. Apple declined to comment on the White House executive order.\nThe FTC has not said what it plans to do, but repair advocates want a few key policy changes, as detailed in its May report. They want companies to be required to make official replacement parts available. They want access to tools that could make repairs easier without reverse-engineering the tools or parts themselves. And ultimately, they want products to be designed with longer lifespans.\nApple is not the only company that would be affected by these policies. Much of the recent pressure is on medical device companies and tractor manufacturers. But given Apple’s ubiquity, it has become a poster child for repair, especially because it promotes its environmental efforts as a corporate value.\nApple has launched a program it calls the “Independent Repair Program” which gives repair shops the option to enter into a certification process and contract with Apple in order to get access to authentic Apple parts, tools and manuals.\nApple has also reduced the price of its battery replacement for iPhones, and recent models have been designed to make it easier to replace a battery or cracked screen, according to iFixit. Plus, compared to other consumer electronics companies, Apple has a large existing network of stores and authorized repair shops.\nStill, many Apple products remain challenging to repair at home or as a business with no contact with Apple.\nThe only AirPods battery replacement company\niFixit, a company that provides disassembly instructions and sells replacement parts for gadgets, gives AirPods models a score of zero out of 10 for repairability. According to iFixit, repairing these earbuds involves soldering, hot air guns and slicing through glue — that is, if replacement battery parts are even available. In the end, a would-be home repairer would have to put the four-gram computer back together again.\nApple provides “battery service” for AirPods, at the cost of $49 per earbud. But functionally, Apple simply gives you a replacement pair, and the old earbuds are recycled. It’s not a repair, it’s a replacement. And it’s expensive. AirPods originally cost $159, so opting for battery service costs more than half of the price of a new pair.\nApple sold about 72.8 million AirPods units in 2020, according to a CounterPoint research estimate, so tens of millions of consumers will face the same lack of choice in the coming years.\nPodSwap is a Miami company founded by Emma Stritzinger and Emily Alpert which aims to keep AirPods “out of the landfill.” They’re not associated with Apple.\nThey believe they’re the only company performing AirPod battery replacements, although other companies “refurbish” old AirPods, the founders told CNBC. The company was formed after the founders experienced dying AirPods themselves and thought that upgrading or replacing them would be wasteful and impractical.\nI recently replaced a pair of AirPods that were only holding a charge for 45 minutes -- too short to complete a phone call. I paid $59 on PodSwap’s Shopify site and a few days later received a replacement pair of AirPods with new batteries. They weren’t my old AirPods, they were another set that had their batteries replaced.\nAlong with those new pods, PodSwap includes a box and a return label. It wants your old AirPods back. It then cleans and sanitizes the old pair, puts in new batteries and sends them out to the next person who wants to change the battery in their old AirPods.\nBut PodSwap faces many challenges that show why repair advocates want new rules. Alpert said the design of the AirPod makes it challenging for repair shops or companies like theirs to do a lot of battery replacements. PodSwap’s process uses both robotics and manual labor, the founders said.\n“The process was developed through trial and error and a large number of units were ‘sacrificed’ and ultimately recycled. One major challenge we faced was overcoming the uniqueness of this product. Each AirPod is assembled with slight differences, which creates complexity in the disassembly,” Alpert said.\nPodSwap plans to soon offer service for the AirPods Pro, a newer model that costs $249 and are, surprisingly, powered by a standard-sized coin battery.\nBut the AirPods Pro have many of the same problems as the first model — tight tolerances, potential damage while taking them apart, a lack of replacement parts, and a design that suggests the product was always designed to last a limited time.\n“We have found the AirPods Pro’s batteries to be more difficult to replace,” Alpert said. “The ergonomic design and tight unforgiving tolerances make it exceptionally challenging to replace the batteries repeatedly, with a high degree of efficiency.”\nPodSwap wasn’t totally seamless for me — I got sent a combination of “first generation” and “second generation” AirPods. They caused my iPhone to send error messages, but I sent an email to PodSwap and a day or two later I got a second replacement set, which worked.\nAfter that, I sent my first replacement set and my old AirPods back. The AirPods I received look and work like new.\nI plan on trying to get another four years out of Images</span></p>\n<p>Chinese electric vehicle maker NIO (NIO) is rebounding fast from the pandemic-driven chip supply shortage and the proof is in surging EV deliveries. Impressive delivery rates for the month of June show that the market may underestimate NIO's growth potential.</p>\n<p><b>Shipping volumes are accelerating</b></p>\n<p>NIO guided for lower production volumes in the second quarter due to the global chip and battery supply shortage. The shortage was set to reduce NIO's factory output from 10,000 vehicles to 7,500 vehicles a month.</p>\n<p>The global semiconductor supply shortage has its roots in the COVID-19 pandemic. As more people started to work from home, a sharp increase in demand for semiconductors from the consumer electronics industry coincided with a faster than anticipated rebound in chip demand from the auto industry, leading to a global shortage in semiconductors that is throttling auto production from the US to China. NIO's guidance for lower factory output has lowered delivery expectations but a return to triple-digit growth rates may now push NIO's stock higher again.</p>\n<p>While the temporary production drop was a setback for NIO, it seems that the electric vehicle maker is ready to bounce back.NIO's June deliveries were nothing short of impressive and the market may underestimate NIO's ability to grow EV deliveries at triple digits this year. The Chinese EV maker delivered a total 8,083 vehicles in June, bringing the Q2'21 total to 21,896 EVs consisting of all models… NIO's 5-seater electric SUV ES6, the 5-seater electric coupe SUV EC6 and the 6-seater or 7-seater electric SUV ES8. NIO's monthly and quarterly delivery totals hit records in the second quarter and the EV maker is set to reach new records for the rest of the year. Total June deliveries saw 116% growth Y/Y with the largest growth coming from the ES6 model. The ES6 category saw 52% growth Y/Y. Total deliveries for Q2'21 were 21,896, most of which were ES6s, showing growth of 112% Y/Y… and that's despite production problems in the second quarter. Comparable figures for the EC6 are not available since deliveries for this model only began after the second quarter last year. What stands out from NIO's June delivery report is that shipping growth is speeding up compared to the previous month, which may be seen as a sign that NIO's delivery capabilities are undervalued. In May, NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles which is equivalent to a Y/Y growth rate of 95%. Strong delivery numbers for the month of June may be a cue that NIO's production problems are easing and that NIO is ready to return to full production capacity.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6af76b71f8259337d534fb29b1a6a8c4\" tg-width=\"673\" tg-height=\"129\"><span>(Source: Author)</span></p>\n<p>NIO has an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles which the EV maker is not fully utilizing due to the semiconductor shortage. As soon as the chip shortage eases, which can be expected to be the case in the second half of the year, we should see a steady ramp up in NIO's factory output and deliveries. The speed of the ramp up will depend less on demand but rather on the severity of the supply shortage. The semiconductor shortage is a primary risk factor that will impact NIO's delivery success in the remaining two quarters.</p>\n<p>The market for electric vehicles is very resilient in China and demand for zero-emission passenger vehicles is not going away due to delays in production, which may be a sort of luxury problem for Chinese EV makers. NIO's EV sales in China have surged this year, but the second half of the year may see even faster growth as the industry works through the supply problem.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7579fc2abe7ca63887e68a9256b54cb3\" tg-width=\"921\" tg-height=\"438\"><span>(Source:InsideEVs)</span></p>\n<p>XPeng (XPEV), another Chinese electric vehicle maker,delivered 6,565 Smart EVs in June 2021, representing growth of 617% Y/Y. XPeng sold 4,730 electric sport sedans and 1,835 compact SUVs last month, more than ever before. In Q2'21, XPeng delivered 17,398 deliveries, representing 439% growth Y/Y.</p>\n<p>XPeng's EV sales in China are also soaring showing strong demand and customer uptake of EV vehicles.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4c8cd25b4fd64f193bc91dabbee99e54\" tg-width=\"925\" tg-height=\"445\"><span>(Source:InsideEVs)</span></p>\n<p><b>NIO FY 2021 delivery projections</b></p>\n<p>My estimates for Q3'21 and Q4'21 deliveries are shown in the graph below and assume a ramp up especially in NIO's ES6 delivery capability and a continual escalation to a quarterly output of 30,000 vehicles by year-end. A quarterly output volume of around 30,000 cars by year-end is realistic to achieve and NIO would still be operating 20% below full production capacity. Calculating the delivery totals for Q1 and Q2 together with my estimates for Q3 and Q4 results in a total delivery potential of 97,056 vehicles (across all three models) in FY 2021 and NIO may even be able to crack the 100,000 barrier if shipment volumes continue to accelerate at a strong rate in the last two quarters of the year. NIO delivered 43,728 vehicles in 2020 in total, so a 97,056 delivery estimate for 2021 implies 122% Y/Y growth. In the first six months of 2021, NIO already delivered 41,956 or 43% of my FY 2021 delivery estimate. As production returns to normal in the second half of the year, NIO should be able to create triple-digit delivery growth on a Y/Y basis.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bb01be329ab1b6d9a6097e74a1d5b250\" tg-width=\"455\" tg-height=\"116\"><span>(Source: Author)</span></p>\n<p><b>NIO's sales growth is cheap</b></p>\n<p>EV makers are not cheap and that is because the market values sales and delivery growth more than anything. NIO trades at a P-S ratio of 9.4 and the valuation multiplier factor is not that much different from other EV makers. Compared against Tesla (TSLA), which trades at a P-S ratio of 9.9, NIO has more revaluation potential because it operates in a larger market and has a lower revenue base.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f84e0cee1726c807b6b7d04f4f4e44f2\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"450\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p><b>Risks</b></p>\n<p>The chip supply shortage is still a major risk factor for NIO and it will have an impact on NIO's Q3 and Q4 production output... which will be below potential. As conditions normalize slowly in the second half, NIO should be able to ramp up factory output and deliveries. While delivery growth rates are influenced by factors outside of NIO's operations, they also represent a big opportunity for NIO to surprise the market. Better than expected growth rates and a fast return to full production could create fertile ground for stock price appreciation.</p>\n<p><b>Final thoughts</b></p>\n<p>NIO may be growing faster than expected in 2021 as the chip supply shortage eases and a strong rebound in the second half of the year could push NIO to hit the critical 100,000 annual delivery milestone. Demand for EVs remained strong in 2021 and Chinese EV makers are killing it. Impressive delivery rates for the month of June show that the market may underestimate NIO's growth potential.\nShipping volumes are accelerating\nNIO guided for lower production volumes in the second quarter due to the global chip and battery supply shortage. The shortage was set to reduce NIO's factory output from 10,000 vehicles to 7,500 vehicles a month.\nThe global semiconductor supply shortage has its roots in the COVID-19 pandemic. As more people started to work from home, a sharp increase in demand for semiconductors from the consumer electronics industry coincided with a faster than anticipated rebound in chip demand from the auto industry, leading to a global shortage in semiconductors that is throttling auto production from the US to China. NIO's guidance for lower factory output has lowered delivery expectations but a return to triple-digit growth rates may now push NIO's stock higher again.\nWhile the temporary production drop was a setback for NIO, it seems that the electric vehicle maker is ready to bounce back.NIO's June deliveries were nothing short of impressive and the market may underestimate NIO's ability to grow EV deliveries at triple digits this year. The Chinese EV maker delivered a total 8,083 vehicles in June, bringing the Q2'21 total to 21,896 EVs consisting of all models… NIO's 5-seater electric SUV ES6, the 5-seater electric coupe SUV EC6 and the 6-seater or 7-seater electric SUV ES8. NIO's monthly and quarterly delivery totals hit records in the second quarter and the EV maker is set to reach new records for the rest of the year. Total June deliveries saw 116% growth Y/Y with the largest growth coming from the ES6 model. The ES6 category saw 52% growth Y/Y. Total deliveries for Q2'21 were 21,896, most of which were ES6s, showing growth of 112% Y/Y… and that's despite production problems in the second quarter. Comparable figures for the EC6 are not available since deliveries for this model only began after the second quarter last year. What stands out from NIO's June delivery report is that shipping growth is speeding up compared to the previous month, which may be seen as a sign that NIO's delivery capabilities are undervalued. In May, NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles which is equivalent to a Y/Y growth rate of 95%. Strong delivery numbers for the month of June may be a cue that NIO's production problems are easing and that NIO is ready to return to full production capacity.\n(Source: Author)\nNIO has an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles which the EV maker is not fully utilizing due to the semiconductor shortage. As soon as the chip shortage eases, which can be expected to be the case in the second half of the year, we should see a steady ramp up in NIO's factory output and deliveries. The speed of the ramp up will depend less on demand but rather on the severity of the supply shortage. The semiconductor shortage is a primary risk factor that will impact NIO's delivery success in the remaining two quarters.\nThe market for electric vehicles is very resilient in China and demand for zero-emission passenger vehicles is not going away due to delays in production, which may be a sort of luxury problem for Chinese EV makers. NIO's EV sales in China have surged this year, but the second half of the year may see even faster growth as the industry works through the supply problem.\n(Source:InsideEVs)\nXPeng (XPEV), another Chinese electric vehicle maker,delivered 6,565 Smart EVs in June 2021, representing growth of 617% Y/Y. XPeng sold 4,730 electric sport sedans and 1,835 compact SUVs last month, more than ever before. In Q2'21, XPeng delivered 17,398 deliveries, representing 439% growth Y/Y.\nXPeng's EV sales in China are also soaring showing strong demand and customer uptake of EV vehicles.\n(Source:InsideEVs)\nNIO FY 2021 delivery projections\nMy estimates for Q3'21 and Q4'21 deliveries are shown in the graph below and assume a ramp up especially in NIO's ES6 delivery capability and a continual escalation to a quarterly output of 30,000 vehicles by year-end. A quarterly output volume of around 30,000 cars by year-end is realistic to achieve and NIO would still be operating 20% below full production capacity. Calculating the delivery totals for Q1 and Q2 together with my estimates for Q3 and Q4 results in a total delivery potential of 97,056 vehicles (across all three models) in FY 2021 and NIO may even be able to crack the 100,000 barrier if shipment volumes continue to accelerate at a strong rate in the last two quarters of the year. NIO delivered 43,728 vehicles in 2020 in total, so a 97,056 delivery estimate for 2021 implies 122% Y/Y growth. In the first six months of 2021, NIO already delivered 41,956 or 43% of my FY 2021 delivery estimate. As production returns to normal in the second half of the year, NIO should be able to create triple-digit delivery growth on a Y/Y basis.\n(Source: Author)\nNIO's sales growth is cheap\nEV makers are not cheap and that is because the market values sales and delivery growth more than anything. NIO trades at a P-S ratio of 9.4 and the valuation multiplier factor is not that much different from other EV makers. Compared against Tesla (TSLA), which trades at a P-S ratio of 9.9, NIO has more revaluation potential because it operates in a larger market and has a lower revenue base.\nData by YCharts\nRisks\nThe chip supply shortage is still a major risk factor for NIO and it will have an impact on NIO's Q3 and Q4 production output... which will be below potential. As conditions normalize slowly in the second half, NIO should be able to ramp up factory output and deliveries. While delivery growth rates are influenced by factors outside of NIO's operations, they also represent a big opportunity for NIO to surprise the market. Better than expected growth rates and a fast return to full production could create fertile ground for stock price appreciation.\nFinal thoughts\nNIO may be growing faster than expected in 2021 as the chip supply shortage eases and a strong rebound in the second half of the year could push NIO to hit the critical 100,000 annual delivery milestone. That said, there’s plenty of overhead hurdles.</p>\n<p>Specifically, Alibaba stock is struggling with the 21-week moving average, as well as the 21-month and 10-month moving averages.</p>\n<p>Let’s be clear: There are not a lot of bullish technical components here. If Alibaba stock could hold the 10-week moving average on this week’s dip, I’d feel better about it.</p>\n<p>However, as long as it can hold up over the $210 level and really, the 200-week moving average, I feel okay about Alibaba going into the next six months.</p>\n<p>A push over $235 - thus putting it over all of the moving average hurdles mentioned above - could open up a run to $250, then $263. In fact, I wrote a very bullish piece about six weeks ago, detailing how I thought Apple was in the process of consolidating before a big breakout. In this article, I want to update readers on the progress of that, as well as addressing some concerns that could be potentially bearish. But the spoiler alert is that I’m still very much in the camp of Apple setting up a breakout, and I think the company’s typical pre-earnings move is likely the catalyst to see that happen.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/37078c4ff01404a43176bb2e2555834d\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"615\"><span>Source: StockCharts</span></p>\n<p>To start, I’ve annotated the same ascending triangle formation I noted six weeks ago, because it is still very much in play. The stock is very near the top of the triangle today, so what happens when/if it gets to $136/$137 will determine if the breakout is imminent or if we need at least one more test of the rising trend line that forms the bottom of the triangle. Whether that occurs or not doesn’t change my outlook; only the timing of it.</p>\n<p>Ascending triangles measure upside targets on breakouts equal to the top and bottom of the widest part of the triangle. In this case, the top of the triangle is $137 and the bottom of the triangle, which was set in September of last year, was $102. That means that this triangle pattern has a measured price target – after the breakout – of $35 higher ($137 minus $102), and with the breakout point being $137 or so, that implies we canexpect Apple to hit $172, give or take. Now, that won’t happen immediately, of course, but that’s the kind of opportunity at hand here.</p>\n<p>What do you need to look for on a breakout? First, price action needs to decisively clear the breakout level of $137 and close above it. In addition, you want to see rising volume on the breakout – I’ve annotated declining volume in the triangle period, which is normal behavior – and you want to see rising momentum, we’ve got rising momentum today. So I’d expect a breakout to continue that, but these are the things you want to see on a breakout to ensure it has staying power.</p>\n<p>Finally, you’ll notice that I’ve added blue circles on the chart, and those represent the start of the ~4-week period prior to an earnings release. Apple has been<i>very</i>reliable in the past couple of years in terms of rallying into an earnings report, and I have no reason to think that will change. I love stocks with earnings revision charts like Apple’s because the bar is always rising, which means that the stock will follow suit.</p>\n<p><b>Not all is well</b></p>\n<p>Apple, to be fair, does face a huge amount of risks that are outside of its control. Many of them cropped up since my last report on Apple and so I want to balance my bullish position on the stock with some sobering reality to ensure readers are well-equipped to make an informed decision about whether or not Apple is right for their portfolio.</p>\n<p>First, the FTC made the headlines a few weeks ago by appointing Lina Khan, an outspoken and noted big tech critic, who feels certain companies have too much control over the behaviors of consumers. This is a noteworthy development because if the FTC wants to go after big tech, Apple is a very logical early target. I don’t see it impacting iPhone or other hardware sales but services revenue? Absolutely. This is a longer-term threat since antitrust rules take time to create, but Apple shareholders need to take this threat seriously.</p>\n<p>The White Houseis apparently on board with this line of thinking, and the House is actually considering legislation that would undertake to reign in the perceived control of big tech companies, including Apple's tendency to pre-install its own apps on Apple devices. Would that stop consumers from just going to the app store and downloading them? No, but it certainly isn't a<i>positive</i> catalyst.</p>\n<p>Apple is facing a similar threat in Germany and other places in the developed world, so it isn’t just a problem at home. Germany is assessing if Apple has “competition violations” to be addressed. So the issue is the same one being faced in the US, and the only two outcomes are neutral (nothing happens), or negative (antitrust action is taken).</p>\n<p>Apple is also still very much beholden to the never-ending trade war between China and the US, as the two countries constantly jockey for position with the highest stakes the world has ever seen in such a scuffle. Apple’s production process is potentially at risk, depending upon how ugly things get, adding some geopolitical risk to the stock's outlook. This goes both ways, and China employs a lot of people and generates a lot of cash from Apple’s production. So I’m not sure it is as one-sided as it seems, but the geopolitical risk is never a good thing, and Apple’s manufacturing needs set it up for such a risk.</p>\n<p><b>Final thoughts</b></p>\n<p>I’ve enumerated a variety of potential issues Apple is facing, and I’ll be clear and say none of these are good things. The best possible outcome is that nothing changes, and the worst is that all come to fruition and Apple faces manufacturing challenges, as well as antitrust actions. Whether that occurs or not doesn’t change my outlook; only the timing of it.\nAscending triangles measure upside targets on breakouts equal to the top and bottom of the widest part of the triangle. That means that this triangle pattern has a measured price target – after the breakout – of $35 higher ($137 minus $102), and with the breakout point being $137 or so, that implies we canexpect Apple to hit $172, give or take. Now, that won’t happen immediately, of course, but that’s the kind of opportunity at hand here.\nWhat do you need to look for on a breakout? First, price action needs to decisively clear the breakout level of $137 and close above it. In addition, you want to see rising volume on the breakout – I’ve annotated declining volume in the triangle period, which is normal behavior – and you want to see rising momentum, we’ve got rising momentum today. Therefore, I see no reason to doubt that iPad sales will impress once again this time, although the growth rate will be partially eclipsed by tough 2020 comps.</p>\n<p>But the story does not end with the effects of the pandemic. The chart below shows that, since around 2017, Apple has been able to reignite demand for its tablets. Still, the stock hasn’t responded the way bulls were hoping.</p>\n<p>All of this comes as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq continue to grind outnew all-time highs.</p>\n<p>It also comes as FAANG stocks continue to trade incredibly well. Alphabet (<b>GOOGL</b>) -Get Reportis the top performerwith a near-40% gain in the first half of the year, while Netflix (<b>NFLX</b>) -Get Report is the worst, with a 2.3% drop.</p>\n<p>Alibaba has a similar first-half performance, down 2.6%. However, it’s doing far worse from the highs, down more than 30%.</p>\n<p>Can it turn around its woes in the second half and start rallying higher?</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9975f383919ff8cfc34fca49a32d8e8f\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"494\"></p>\n<p>Call me a hopeless optimist, but I feel that Alibaba can have a solid second-half performance.</p>\n<p>The overall market has done too well and so has large-cap tech. The fundamentals of the business are intact and growth is strong. It’s like Amazon (<b>AMZN</b>) -Get Report.Eventually, it will perform better - it’s a question of “when” and not “if.”</p>\n<p>Shares continue to hold the $210 to $212 area and have recently cleared downtrend resistance (blue line). That said, there’s plenty of overhead hurdles.</p>\n<p>Specifically, Alibaba stock is struggling with the 21-week moving average, as well as the 21-month and 10-month moving averages.</p>\n<p>Let’s be clear: There are not a lot of bullish technical components here. If Alibaba stock could hold the 10-week moving average on this week’s dip, I’d feel better about it.</p>\n<p>However, as long as it can hold up over the $210 level and really, the 200-week moving average, I feel okay about Alibaba going into the next six months.</p>\n<p>A push over $235 - thus putting it over all of the moving average hurdles mentioned above - could open up a run to $250, then $263. Still, the stock hasn’t responded the way bulls were hoping.\nAll of this comes as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq continue to grind outnew all-time highs.\nIt also comes as FAANG stocks continue to trade incredibly well. Alphabet (GOOGL) -Get Reportis the top performerwith a near-40% gain in the first half of the year, while Netflix (NFLX) -Get Report is the worst, with a 2.3% drop.\nAlibaba has a similar first-half performance, down 2.6%. Impressive delivery rates for the month of June show that the market may underestimate NIO's growth potential.</p>\n<p><b>Shipping volumes are accelerating</b></p>\n<p>NIO guided for lower production volumes in the second quarter due to the global chip and battery supply shortage. The shortage was set to reduce NIO's factory output from 10,000 vehicles to 7,500 vehicles a month.</p>\n<p>The global semiconductor supply shortage has its roots in the COVID-19 pandemic. As more people started to work from home, a sharp increase in demand for semiconductors from the consumer electronics industry coincided with a faster than anticipated rebound in chip demand from the auto industry, leading to a global shortage in semiconductors that is throttling auto production from the US to China. NIO's guidance for lower factory output has lowered delivery expectations but a return to triple-digit growth rates may now push NIO's stock higher again.</p>\n<p>While the temporary production drop was a setback for NIO, it seems that the electric vehicle maker is ready to bounce back.NIO's June deliveries were nothing short of impressive and the market may underestimate NIO's ability to grow EV deliveries at triple digits this year. The Chinese EV maker delivered a total 8,083 vehicles in June, bringing the Q2'21 total to 21,896 EVs consisting of all models… NIO's 5-seater electric SUV ES6, the 5-seater electric coupe SUV EC6 and the 6-seater or 7-seater electric SUV ES8. NIO's monthly and quarterly delivery totals hit records in the second quarter and the EV maker is set to reach new records for the rest of the year. Total June deliveries saw 116% growth Y/Y with the largest growth coming from the ES6 model. The ES6 category saw 52% growth Y/Y. Total deliveries for Q2'21 were 21,896, most of which were ES6s, showing growth of 112% Y/Y… and that's despite production problems in the second quarter. Comparable figures for the EC6 are not available since deliveries for this model only began after the second quarter last year. What stands out from NIO's June delivery report is that shipping growth is speeding up compared to the previous month, which may be seen as a sign that NIO's delivery capabilities are undervalued. In May, NIO delivered 6,711 vehicles which is equivalent to a Y/Y growth rate of 95%. Strong delivery numbers for the month of June may be a cue that NIO's production problems are easing and that NIO is ready to return to full production capacity.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/6af76b71f8259337d534fb29b1a6a8c4\" tg-width=\"673\" tg-height=\"129\"><span>(Source: Author)</span></p>\n<p>NIO has an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles which the EV maker is not fully utilizing due to the semiconductor shortage. As soon as the chip shortage eases, which can be expected to be the case in the second half of the year, we should see a steady ramp up in NIO's factory output and deliveries. The speed of the ramp up will depend less on demand but rather on the severity of the supply shortage. The semiconductor shortage is a primary risk factor that will impact NIO's delivery success in the remaining two quarters.</p>\n<p>The market for electric vehicles is very resilient in China and demand for zero-emission passenger vehicles is not going away due to delays in production, which may be a sort of luxury problem for Chinese EV makers. XPeng sold 4,730 electric sport sedans and 1,835 compact SUVs last month, more than ever before. In Q2'21, XPeng delivered 17,398 deliveries, representing 439% growth Y/Y.</p>\n<p>XPeng's EV sales in China are also soaring showing strong demand and customer uptake of EV vehicles.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4c8cd25b4fd64f193bc91dabbee99e54\" tg-width=\"925\" tg-height=\"445\"><span>(Source:InsideEVs)</span></p>\n<p><b>NIO FY 2021 delivery projections</b></p>\n<p>My estimates for Q3'21 and Q4'21 deliveries are shown in the graph below and assume a ramp up especially in NIO's ES6 delivery capability and a continual escalation to a quarterly output of 30,000 vehicles by year-end. A quarterly output volume of around 30,000 cars by year-end is realistic to achieve and NIO would still be operating 20% below full production capacity. Calculating the delivery totals for Q1 and Q2 together with my estimates for Q3 and Q4 results in a total delivery potential of 97,056 vehicles (across all three models) in FY 2021 and NIO may even be able to crack the 100,000 barrier if shipment volumes continue to accelerate at a strong rate in the last two quarters of the year. NIO delivered 43,728 vehicles in 2020 in total, so a 97,056 delivery estimate for 2021 implies 122% Y/Y growth. In the first six months of 2021, NIO already delivered 41,956 or 43% of my FY 2021 delivery estimate. NIO trades at a P-S ratio of 9.4 and the valuation multiplier factor is not that much different from other EV makers. Compared against Tesla (TSLA), which trades at a P-S ratio of 9.9, NIO has more revaluation potential because it operates in a larger market and has a lower revenue base.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f84e0cee1726c807b6b7d04f4f4e44f2\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"450\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p><b>Risks</b></p>\n<p>The chip supply shortage is still a major risk factor for NIO and it will have an impact on NIO's Q3 and Q4 production output... which will be below potential. As conditions normalize slowly in the second half, NIO should be able to ramp up factory output and deliveries. While delivery growth rates are influenced by factors outside of NIO's operations, they also represent a big opportunity for NIO to surprise the market. Better than expected growth rates and a fast return to full production could create fertile ground for stock price appreciation.</p>\n<p><b>Final thoughts</b></p>\n<p>NIO may be growing faster than expected in 2021 as the chip supply shortage eases and a strong rebound in the second half of the year could push NIO to hit the critical 100,000 annual delivery milestone. In fact, I wrote a very bullish piece about six weeks ago, detailing how I thought Apple was in the process of consolidating before a big breakout. In this article, I want to update readers on the progress of that, as well as addressing some concerns that could be potentially bearish. But the spoiler alert is that I’m still very much in the camp of Apple setting up a breakout, and I think the company’s typical pre-earnings move is likely the catalyst to see that happen.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/37078c4ff01404a43176bb2e2555834d\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"615\"><span>Source: StockCharts</span></p>\n<p>To start, I’ve annotated the same ascending triangle formation I noted six weeks ago, because it is still very much in play. The stock is very near the top of the triangle today, so what happens when/if it gets to $136/$137 will determine if the breakout is imminent or if we need at least one more test of the rising trend line that forms the bottom of the triangle. Whether that occurs or not doesn’t change my outlook; only the timing of it.</p>\n<p>Ascending triangles measure upside targets on breakouts equal to the top and bottom of the widest part of the triangle. In this case, the top of the triangle is $137 and the bottom of the triangle, which was set in September of last year, was $102. That means that this triangle pattern has a measured price target – after the breakout – of $35 higher ($137 minus $102), and with the breakout point being $137 or so, that implies we canexpect Apple to hit $172, give or take. Now, that won’t happen immediately, of course, but that’s the kind of opportunity at hand here.</p>\n<p>What do you need to look for on a breakout? First, price action needs to decisively clear the breakout level of $137 and close above it. In addition, you want to see rising volume on the breakout – I’ve annotated declining volume in the triangle period, which is normal behavior – and you want to see rising momentum, we’ve got rising momentum today. I love stocks with earnings revision charts like Apple’s because the bar is always rising, which means that the stock will follow suit.</p>\n<p><b>Not all is well</b></p>\n<p>Apple, to be fair, does face a huge amount of risks that are outside of its control. Many of them cropped up since my last report on Apple and so I want to balance my bullish position on the stock with some sobering reality to ensure readers are well-equipped to make an informed decision about whether or not Apple is right for their portfolio.</p>\n<p>First, the FTC made the headlines a few weeks ago by appointing Lina Khan, an outspoken and noted big tech critic, who feels certain companies have too much control over the behaviors of consumers. This is a noteworthy development because if the FTC wants to go after big tech, Apple is a very logical early target. I don’t see it impacting iPhone or other hardware sales but services revenue? Absolutely. This is a longer-term threat since antitrust rules take time to create, but Apple shareholders need to take this threat seriously.</p>\n<p>The White Houseis apparently on board with this line of thinking, and the House is actually considering legislation that would undertake to reign in the perceived control of big tech companies, including Apple's tendency to pre-install its own apps on Apple devices. Would that stop consumers from just going to the app store and downloading them? No, but it certainly isn't a<i>positive</i> catalyst.</p>\n<p>Apple is facing a similar threat in Germany and other places in the developed world, so it isn’t just a problem at home. Germany is assessing if Apple has “competition violations” to be addressed. So the issue is the same one being faced in the US, and the only two outcomes are neutral (nothing happens), or negative (antitrust action is taken).</p>\n<p>Apple is also still very much beholden to the never-ending trade war between China and the US, as the two countries constantly jockey for position with the highest stakes the world has ever seen in such a scuffle. Apple’s production process is potentially at risk, depending upon how ugly things get, adding some geopolitical risk to the stock's outlook. This goes both ways, and China employs a lot of people and generates a lot of cash from Apple’s production. So I’m not sure it is as one-sided as it seems, but the geopolitical risk is never a good thing, and Apple’s manufacturing needs set it up for such a risk.</p>\n<p><b>Final thoughts</b></p>\n<p>I’ve enumerated a variety of potential issues Apple is facing, and I’ll be clear and say none of these are good things. The best possible outcome is that nothing changes, and the worst is that all come to fruition and Apple faces manufacturing challenges, as well as antitrust actions. These are real threats, but I also think they're already priced in.</p>\n<p>The threat of antitrust legislation or a trade war with China isn’t new by any stretch of the imagination and is not dissimilar to the threats that other tech giants like Amazon (AMZN), Alphabet (GOOG), or Facebook (FB) face every day. I don’t want to ignore these potential negative catalysts, but I don’t want to overreact, either.</p>\n<p>Keep in mind also that Apple continues to move higher over time despite this bad news, which is what winning stocks do. The fact that it is shrugging off these huge potential negative catalysts reinforces the bullish stance I already had on the stock.</p>\n<p>I detailed my bullishness on the company’s revenue generation, margins, buybacks, valuation, and more in the prior piece, and nothing has changed there. So I don’t want to waste your time going through it again. Without a cord, the earbud gets its power from a tiny cylindrical battery that has about 1% of the capacity of an iPhone’s battery.\nBut lithium-ion batteries, like those used by the AirPods, wear out the more they are used.\nSome owners have noticed that, after a few years, used AirPods eventually will last only an hour or so before needing to be recharged -- a big decay from the four-to-five-hour battery life they have when new. Because each AirPod is so small and so tightly packed into its housing, it’s almost impossible to swap out the old battery for a new one. Most people give up and just buy a new pair.\nThe limited lifespan of AirPods is exactly the kind of problem that the “right-to-repair” movement wants to fix. Repair shops and lobbyists that support repair reform want lawmakers to implement a variety of rules, including increased access to manuals and official parts and consumer protections around warranties.\nBut one of their most important requests is for companies to design products with repair in mind, instead of packing gadgets with unlabeled parts and sticking them together with glue, forcing users to use a knife to take them apart.\nThis desire puts repair advocates at odds with hardware companies like Apple, whose business models depend on customers upgrading to the latest model every few years. When Apple offered cheap iPhone battery repairs a few years ago, it hurt sales as consumers were able to hang on to their old phones for longer instead of upgrading. Apple also charges customers for repairs and extended warranties.\n“We design our products for durability in order to minimize the need for repair,” Apple wrote in an environmental report earlier this year. “But in the instance a repair is needed, we believe our customers should have convenient access to safe and reliable repair services, to get their product back up and running as quickly as possible.”\nThe right-to-repair movement gains steam\nPolicymakers have started to engage more closely with right-to-repair advocates in recent years. State-level bills have been introduced in a majority of states, but electronics companies have lobbied against them and none have passed.\nIn May, the Federal Trade Commission released a 56-page report on repair restrictions, concluding that repair restrictions have “steered consumers into manufacturers’ repair networks or to replace products before the end of their useful lives” — exactly the problem users are running into with their AirPods.\nThe Biden administration on Friday ordered the FTC to write new regulations targeted at limiting manufacturers’ ability to hamper independent or do-it-yourself repairs as part of a sweeping executive order. New repair rules have not yet been drafted.\n“Tech and other companies impose restrictions on self and third-party repairs, making repairs more costly and time-consuming, such as by restricting the distribution of parts, diagnostics, and repair tools,” the White House wrote in a fact sheet about the order on Friday, linking to a story about fixing Apple products. Apple declined to comment on the White House executive order.\nThe FTC has not said what it plans to do, but repair advocates want a few key policy changes, as detailed in its May report. They want companies to be required to make official replacement parts available. They want access to tools that could make repairs easier without reverse-engineering the tools or parts themselves. And ultimately, they want products to be designed with longer lifespans.\nApple is not the only company that would be affected by these policies. Much of the recent pressure is on medical device companies and tractor manufacturers. But given Apple’s ubiquity, it has become a poster child for repair, especially because it promotes its environmental efforts as a corporate value.\nApple has launched a program it calls the “Independent Repair Program” which gives repair shops the option to enter into a certification process and contract with Apple in order to get access to authentic Apple parts, tools and manuals.\nApple has also reduced the price of its battery replacement for iPhones, and recent models have been designed to make it easier to replace a battery or cracked screen, according to iFixit. Plus, compared to other consumer electronics companies, Apple has a large existing network of stores and authorized repair shops.\nStill, many Apple products remain challenging to repair at home or as a business with no contact with Apple.\nThe only AirPods battery replacement company\niFixit, a company that provides disassembly instructions and sells replacement parts for gadgets, gives AirPods models a score of zero out of 10 for repairability. According to iFixit, repairing these earbuds involves soldering, hot air guns and slicing through glue — that is, if replacement battery parts are even available. In the end, a would-be home repairer would have to put the four-gram computer back together again.\nApple provides “battery service” for AirPods, at the cost of $49 per earbud. But functionally, Apple simply gives you a replacement pair, and the old earbuds are recycled. It’s not a repair, it’s a replacement. And it’s expensive. AirPods originally cost $159, so opting for battery service costs more than half of the price of a new pair.\nApple sold about 72.8 million AirPods units in 2020, according to a CounterPoint research estimate, so tens of millions of consumers will face the same lack of choice in the coming years.\nPodSwap is a Miami company founded by Emma Stritzinger and Emily Alpert which aims to keep AirPods “out of the landfill.” They’re not associated with Apple.\nThey believe they’re the only company performing AirPod battery replacements, although other companies “refurbish” old AirPods, the founders told CNBC. The company was formed after the founders experienced dying AirPods themselves and thought that upgrading or replacing them would be wasteful and impractical.\nI recently replaced a pair of AirPods that were only holding a charge for 45 minutes -- too short to complete a phone call. I paid $59 on PodSwap’s Shopify site and a few days later received a replacement pair of AirPods with new batteries. They weren’t my old AirPods, they were another set that had their batteries replaced.\nAlong with those new pods, PodSwap includes a box and a return label. It wants your old AirPods back. It then cleans and sanitizes the old pair, puts in new batteries and sends them out to the next person who wants to change the battery in their old AirPods.\nBut PodSwap faces many challenges that show why repair advocates want new rules. Alpert said the design of the AirPod makes it challenging for repair shops or companies like theirs to do a lot of battery replacements. PodSwap’s process uses both robotics and manual labor, the founders said.\n“The process was developed through trial and error and a large number of units were ‘sacrificed’ and ultimately recycled. One major challenge we faced was overcoming the uniqueness of this product. Each AirPod is assembled with slight differences, which creates complexity in the disassembly,” Alpert said.\nPodSwap plans to soon offer service for the AirPods Pro, a newer model that costs $249 and are, surprisingly, powered by a standard-sized coin battery.\nBut the AirPods Pro have many of the same problems as the first model — tight tolerances, potential damage while taking them apart, a lack of replacement parts, and a design that suggests the product was always designed to last a limited time.\n“We have found the AirPods Pro’s batteries to be more difficult to replace,” Alpert said. “The ergonomic design and tight unforgiving tolerances make it exceptionally challenging to replace the batteries repeatedly, with a high degree of efficiency.”\nPodSwap wasn’t totally seamless for me — I got sent a combination of “first generation” and “second generation” AirPods. They caused my iPhone to send error messages, but I sent an email to PodSwap and a day or two later I got a second replacement set, which worked.\nAfter that, I sent my first replacement set and my old AirPods back.
