near-term prospects.
\n
Even so, current lofty valuation leaves little room for upside investment potential.
\n
I remain slightly bearish on the company's prospects.
\n
\n
Tesla (TSLA), the undoubted leader in the electric vehicle market, has had the share price run of a lifetime, rising nearly 1,500% over the past 24 months as markets rallied for the post-pandemic surge and the company continued reporting solid sales and income growth.
\n
I've argued in the past that, although the company has several strong long-term growth avenues to pursue, their long-term prospects are dimmed compared to what analysts have projected, given the amount of competition emerging in the EV industry over the course of the next few years.
\n
But that's a whole other thing than the company's near-term prospects, which I believe are grand relative to some of the established players shifting over to electric vehicle production, as I've highlighted inmy recent articleon Ford (F). These advantages mean that the company will remain superior in the near term when it comes to profitability and diversity within the EV industry and can best utilize the rapid growth rate the entire industry is expecting.
\n
The Long-Term Headwinds Haven't Changed
\n
As I've been highlighting for several months now,Tesla's long-term prospects have dimmedsince other automobile companies like Ford and General Motors (GM) in the United States, NIO (NIO) and others in the Asia-Pacific region and other European and South Korean automobile manufacturers moved up their electrification process timelines. The main reason for this is that these companies have very solid brand recognition, and individuals who have owned these models for years or decades have the option to opt for an electric version of those; they choose those over trying out a new untested model a majority of the time.
\n
With companies like Ford introducing the all-electric F-150 and others, it's unclear how Tesla can maintain this high growth rate beyond 2024 as these models are expected to hit the streets and begin capturing back market share away from Tesla and other current models. Other factors like Tesla opening up their charging station network to all EV models, as well as a massive capital injection into EV charging stations in the most recent infrastructure spending bill in the United States, will surely help Tesla's income when it charges for the use, but it also helps other companies overcome the main hurdle of widespread adoption - clearing a pathway for more and more EV models to emerge.
\n
The Short-Term Tailwinds Are Emerging
\n
Tesla has several near-term tailwinds which will keep way ahead of any competition for the next 12 to 24 months. These mostly all boil down to profitability but also focus on various business model advantages.
\n
1. A positive profit margin: While other companies are just now beginning to invest in transforming their manufacturing facilities from fossil fuel intake engines to electric vehicle production, Tesla has done this and way more efficiently. Since they've built these from scratch, they've mostly automated the process and thus enjoy a much higher profit margin. Other companies won't see a profit per vehicle for years to come.
\n
2. Surging battery manufacturing: Although other companies have a mixed position on whether to manufacture their own batteries or set up joint ventures with existing companies, Tesla has been churning out batteries for years and have, as similar with the vehicle manufacturing process, nearly fully automated the process to maximize profits per unit.
\n
3. International manufacturing: Other companies, thus far, have focused on restructuring and transforming current assembly plants in the United States and will likely take several more years before they do so for other international facilities, which means they will need to spend a fortune shipping these new vehicles around the world to the EMEA and the Asia-Pacific. Tesla, on the other hand, has manufacturing facilities in the United States and in China and is set to open their plant in Germany as well as being in final development stages of an India plant, which will allow them to access a much larger market.
\n
4. Charging stations advantage: Although the new infrastructure bill in the United States, as well as massive investments in countries like Japan and China, are certain to put in hundreds of thousands of new EV charging stations across the globe, this will take time. So far, only Tesla has a real robust charging network across the world. A recent development, which does have negative elements to it as mentioned earlier, has a positive near term one - they will be raking in net profits from allowing other electric vehicles to charge on their network. This means that they'll likely be profiting from each vehicle their competitors churn out, at least until the scaling up of non-Tesla charging stations takes place.
\n
5. \"Other Business\" growth rate: While other automobile companies are still spending hand over fist on their other models and products, Tesla enjoys being only in high-growth industries like SolarCity's solar panels and battery sales. As I'll expand on in the next segment, they also don't have near-term or long-term financial obligations from these \"other business\" segments as establishment automobile companies have.
\n
Balance Sheet Advantages
\n
Although some elements of their balance sheet advantage are set to help them in the long run as well, they're mostly advantages for the short term since once these other companies begin making a profit from their EV sales - a lot of this will be reversed.
\n
Tesla's main advantage, as mentioned earlier, is that they're actually raking in cash from each car they sell, allowing them to use that cash to continue and set up more manufacturing facilities and invest in battery technology, solar technology and production increases. This is contrary to other automobile companies which have high financial obligations to their other business segments like pensions and leases. This will further aid the company's overall profit margin, while they don't struggle with such obligations.
\n
These other companies will need to use profits and cash from their existing legacy business segments to pay for their losses on each vehicle they produce, hurting their overall valuation moving forward.
\n
Although Tesla has $6.9 billion inlong-term debt, a factor which kept many investors on the sidelines as debt racked up, they currently hold just under $16.3 billion in cash and equivalents, making their net debt position negative. They've been using the cash to pay down their debt as well, reducing their interest expense burdenfrom almost $800 million in 2020 to just over $500 million in 2021. Tesla paid back $15 billion in debt in 2021 for a net debt reduction of $6 billion. There's very little doubt that other automobile companies will be forced to take on more debt to finance increased production and in this raising rate environment, that can snowball.
\n
Tesla is set to seecash flowof around $10 billion annually whereas a company like Ford has been fluctuating between a net positive and negative cash flow status for the past few years, and that's not expected to change through 2025 as they continue to increase investments in the electrification of their vehicles.
\n
What About Current Valuation
\n
Analystscurrently expect the company to report EPS of $5.38 for 2021 and grow at a fast pace to reach EPS of $10.33 for 2024. As I mentioned in my earlier article, I believe that, given comparison with other major automobile companies, the company is fairly valued at around 75x forward earnings.
\n
I do, however, believe that some of the current competition expectations are overblown for the near term, as I've been mentioning throughout the entire article. Therefore, I do believe that Tesla will outperform current expectations at least through 2023. This means that a 75x forward earnings multiple is the ground base for appropriate valuation, I believe.
\n
This presents the following fair value, with the implied increase potential:
\n
As you can see, this means that Tesla is almost 40% overvalued relative to earnings expectations, even if they overcome them by as much as 20%. However, given that these expectations are likely to be beaten, I don't believe that shorting the company is a good idea, but one thing that is worth looking out for is a general market correction.
\n
The Biggest Risk Of Owning Tesla
\n
The biggest risk with owning Tesla right now is that, in a general market correction, which can happen at any moment as the post-pandemic trade is winding down, companies with lofty expectations tend to fall the most as fair value is sought beyond what their potential is way down the line.
\n
I don't believe that shorting Tesla is the right approach, even though my disclosures down below and in previous article state that I am, given general market exposure. I am short simply because I don't believe that much upwards potential is there, whilst downward potential in a market correction is vast. So, given that I am mostly long, this short is a general portfolio hedge while I reduce positions in case of a correction.
\n
In Conclusion
\n
Tesla has several positive catalysts which should keep them on top of the EV industry growth roster for the next 24 to 36 months, while other companies struggle to make even a single penny on their new vehicles. These are set, I believe, to allow them to beat earnings expectations for that time period.
\n
Even so, their long-term competitive pressures remain high and as I stated in my previous article - their long-term growth prospects will continue to dim as time moves on.
\n
Even with these positive near-term advantages, I still believe that the company is overvalued by as much as 40%, and although I do not favor shorting the company for this overvaluation, I remain slightly bearish on their long-term prospects and neutral to slightly bullish on their near-term one.
","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; These advantages mean that the company will remain superior in the near term when it comes to profitability and diversity within the EV industry and can best utilize the rapid growth rate the entire industry is expecting.\nThe Long-Term Headwinds Haven't Changed\nAs I've been highlighting for several months now,Tesla's long-term prospects have dimmedsince other automobile companies like Ford and General Motors (GM) in the United States, NIO (NIO) and others in the Asia-Pacific region and other European and South Korean automobile manufacturers moved up their electrification process timelines. The main reason for this is that these companies have very solid brand recognition, and individuals who have owned these models for years or decades have the option to opt for an electric version of those; they choose those over trying out a new untested model a majority of the time.\nWith companies like Ford introducing the all-electric F-150 and others, it's unclear how Tesla can maintain this high growth rate beyond 2024 as these models are expected to hit the streets and begin capturing back market share away from Tesla and other current models. Other factors like Tesla opening up their charging station network to all EV models, as well as a massive capital injection into EV charging stations in the most recent infrastructure spending bill in the United States, will surely help Tesla's income when it charges for the use, but it also helps other companies overcome the main hurdle of widespread adoption - clearing a pathway for more and more EV models to emerge.\nThe Short-Term Tailwinds Are Emerging\nTesla has several near-term tailwinds which will keep way ahead of any competition for the next 12 to 24 months. These mostly all boil down to profitability but also focus on various business model advantages.\n1. Other companies won't see a profit per vehicle for years to come.\n2. Surging battery manufacturing: Although other companies have a mixed position on whether to manufacture their own batteries or set up joint ventures with existing companies, Tesla has been churning out batteries for years and have, as similar with the vehicle manufacturing process, nearly fully automated the process to maximize profits per unit.\n3. International manufacturing: Other companies, thus far, have focused on restructuring and transforming current assembly plants in the United States and will likely take several more years before they do so for other international facilities, which means they will need to spend a fortune shipping these new vehicles around the world to the EMEA and the Asia-Pacific. Tesla, on the other hand, has manufacturing facilities in the United States and in China and is set to open their plant in Germany as well as being in final development stages of an India plant, which will allow them to access a much larger market.\n4. This means that they'll likely be profiting from each vehicle their competitors churn out, at least until the scaling up of non-Tesla charging stations takes place.\n5. \"Other Business\" growth rate: While other automobile companies are still spending hand over fist on their other models and products, Tesla enjoys being only in high-growth industries like SolarCity's solar panels and battery sales. As I'll expand on in the next segment, they also don't have near-term or long-term financial obligations from these \"other business\" segments as establishment automobile companies have.\nBalance Sheet Advantages\nAlthough some elements of their balance sheet advantage are set to help them in the long run as well, they're mostly advantages for the short term since once these other companies begin making a profit from their EV sales - a lot of this will be reversed.\nTesla's main advantage, as mentioned earlier, is that they're actually raking in cash from each car they sell, allowing them to use that cash to continue and set up more manufacturing facilities and invest in battery technology, solar technology and production increases. This is contrary to other automobile companies which have high financial obligations to their other business segments like pensions and leases. This will further aid the company's overall profit margin, while they don't struggle with such obligations.\nThese other companies will need to use profits and cash from their existing legacy business segments to pay for their losses on each vehicle they produce, hurting their overall valuation moving forward.\nAlthough Tesla has $6.9 billion inlong-term debt, a factor which kept many investors on the sidelines as debt racked up, they currently hold just under $16.3 billion in cash and equivalents, making their net debt position negative. They've been using the cash to pay down their debt as well, reducing their interest expense burdenfrom almost $800 million in 2020 to just over $500 million in 2021. Tesla paid back $15 billion in debt in 2021 for a net debt reduction of $6 billion. There's very little doubt that other automobile companies will be forced to take on more debt to finance increased production and in this raising rate environment, that can snowball.\nTesla is set to seecash flowof around $10 billion annually whereas a company like Ford has been fluctuating between a net positive and negative cash flow status for the past few years, and that's not expected to change through 2025 as they continue to increase investments in the electrification of their vehicles.\nWhat About Current Valuation\nAnalystscurrently expect the company to report EPS of $5.38 for 2021 and grow at a fast pace to reach EPS of $10.33 for 2024. As I mentioned in my earlier article, I believe that, given comparison with other major automobile companies, the company is fairly valued at around 75x forward earnings.\nI do, however, believe that some of the current competition expectations are overblown for the near term, as I've been mentioning throughout the entire article. Therefore, I do believe that Tesla will outperform current expectations at least through 2023. This means that a 75x forward earnings multiple is the ground base for appropriate valuation, I believe.\nThis presents the following fair value, with the implied increase potential:\nAs you can see, this means that Tesla is almost 40% overvalued relative to earnings expectations, even if they overcome them by as much as 20%. However, given that these expectations are likely to be beaten, I don't believe that shorting the company is a good idea, but one thing that is worth looking out for is a general market correction.\nThe Biggest Risk Of Owning Tesla\nThe biggest risk with owning Tesla right now is that, in a general market correction, which can happen at any moment as the post-pandemic trade is winding down, companies with lofty expectations tend to fall the most as fair value is sought beyond what their potential is way down the line.\nI don't believe that shorting Tesla is the right approach, even though my disclosures down below and in previous article state that I am, given general market exposure. I am short simply because I don't believe that much upwards potential is there, whilst downward potential in a market correction is vast. So, given that I am mostly long, this short is a general portfolio hedge while I reduce positions in case of a correction.\nIn Conclusion\nTesla has several positive catalysts which should keep them on top of the EV industry growth roster for the next 24 to 36 months, while other companies struggle to make even a single penny on their new vehicles. These are set, I believe, to allow them to beat earnings expectations for that time period.\nEven so, their long-term competitive pressures remain high and as I stated in my previous article - their long-term growth prospects will continue to dim as time moves on.\nEven with these positive near-term advantages, I still believe that the company is overvalued by as much as 40%, and although I do not favor shorting the company for this overvaluation, I remain slightly bearish on their long-term prospects and neutral to slightly bullish on their near-term one.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":320,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":806726117,"gmtCreate":1627695434839,"gmtModify":1703494790037,"author":{"id":"4088467012186210","authorId":"4088467012186210","name":"andy1216","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/653530be86acad69c77bb71bf41481e5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088467012186210","authorIdStr":"4088467012186210"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$ARK Innovation ETF(ARKK)$buy moreee","listText":"$ARK Innovation ETF(ARKK)$buy moreee","text":"$ARK Innovation ETF(ARKK)$buy moreee","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3c53f8ee1dc8e464bfd2e0dd7b2ef19f","width":"1284","height":"2223"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/806726117","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":153,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":809186241,"gmtCreate":1627352501483,"gmtModify":1703488178557,"author":{"id":"4088467012186210","authorId":"4088467012186210","name":"andy1216","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/653530be86acad69c77bb71bf41481e5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088467012186210","authorIdStr":"4088467012186210"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$ARK Innovation ETF(ARKK)$Nothing to panic","listText":"$ARK Innovation ETF(ARKK)$Nothing to panic","text":"$ARK Innovation ETF(ARKK)$Nothing to panic","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/53e858e14bc5773ddd20f7d994600991","width":"1284","height":"2223"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/809186241","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":443,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":800247147,"gmtCreate":1627306977089,"gmtModify":1703487243421,"author":{"id":"4088467012186210","authorId":"4088467012186210","name":"andy1216","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/653530be86acad69c77bb71bf41481e5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088467012186210","authorIdStr":"4088467012186210"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Buy during dip","listText":"Buy during dip","text":"Buy during dip","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/800247147","repostId":"1191789958","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1191789958","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1627306293,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1191789958?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-07-26 21:31","market":"fut","language":"en","title":"S&P 500 slips from a record ahead of megacap tech earnings","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1191789958","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"The S&P 500 slipped from a record high on Monday ahead of a busy week of earnings reports from technology's heaviest hitters. The broad equity benchmark dipped 0.1% after hitting a record closing high in the previous session. Without a cord, the earbud gets its power from a tiny cylindrical battery that has about 1% of the capacity of an iPhone’s battery.\nBut lithium-ion batteries, like those used by the AirPods, wear out the more they are used.\nSome owners have noticed that, after a few years, used AirPods eventually will last only an hour or so before needing to be recharged -- a big decay from the four-to-five-hour battery life they have when new. Because each AirPod is so small and so tightly packed into its housing, it’s almost impossible to swap out the old battery for a new one. Most people give up and just buy a new pair.\nThe limited lifespan of AirPods is exactly the kind of problem that the “right-to-repair” movement wants to fix. Repair shops and lobbyists that support repair reform want lawmakers to implement a variety of rules, including increased access to manuals and official parts and consumer protections around warranties.\nBut one of their most important requests is for companies to design products with repair in mind, instead of packing gadgets with unlabeled parts and sticking them together with glue, forcing users to use a knife to take them apart.\nThis desire puts repair advocates at odds with hardware companies like Apple, whose business models depend on customers upgrading to the latest model every few years. When Apple offered cheap iPhone battery repairs a few years ago, it hurt sales as consumers were able to hang on to their old phones for longer instead of upgrading. Apple also charges customers for repairs and extended warranties.\n“We design our products for durability in order to minimize the need for repair,” Apple wrote in an environmental report earlier this year. “But in the instance a repair is needed, we believe our customers should have convenient access to safe and reliable repair services, to get their product back up and running as quickly as possible.”\nThe right-to-repair movement gains steam\nPolicymakers have started to engage more closely with right-to-repair advocates in recent years. State-level bills have been introduced in a majority of states, but electronics companies have lobbied against them and none have passed.\nIn May, the Federal Trade Commission released a 56-page report on repair restrictions, concluding that repair restrictions have “steered consumers into manufacturers’ repair networks or to replace products before the end of their useful lives” — exactly the problem users are running into with their AirPods.\nThe Biden administration on Friday ordered the FTC to write new regulations targeted at limiting manufacturers’ ability to hamper independent or do-it-yourself repairs as part of a sweeping executive order. New repair rules have not yet been drafted.\n“Tech and other companies impose restrictions on self and third-party repairs, making repairs more costly and time-consuming, such as by restricting the distribution of parts, diagnostics, and repair tools,” the White House wrote in a fact sheet about the order on Friday, linking to a story about fixing Apple products. Apple declined to comment on the White House executive order.\nThe FTC has not said what it plans to do, but repair advocates want a few key policy changes, as detailed in its May report. They want companies to be required to make official replacement parts available. They want access to tools that could make repairs easier without reverse-engineering the tools or parts themselves. And ultimately, they want products to be designed with longer lifespans.\nApple is not the only company that would be affected by these policies. Much of the recent pressure is on medical device companies and tractor manufacturers. But given Apple’s ubiquity, it has become a poster child for repair, especially because it promotes its environmental efforts as a corporate value.\nApple has launched a program it calls the “Independent Repair Program” which gives repair shops the option to enter into a certification process and contract with Apple in order to get access to authentic Apple parts, tools and manuals.\nApple has also reduced the price of its battery replacement for iPhones, and recent models have been designed to make it easier to replace a battery or cracked screen, according to iFixit. Plus, compared to other consumer electronics companies, Apple has a large existing network of stores and authorized repair shops.\nStill, many Apple products remain challenging to repair at home or as a business with no contact with Apple.\nThe only AirPods battery replacement company\niFixit, a company that provides disassembly instructions and sells replacement parts for gadgets, gives AirPods models a score of zero out of 10 for repairability. According to iFixit, repairing these earbuds involves soldering, hot air guns and slicing through glue — that is, if replacement battery parts are even available. In the end, a would-be home repairer would have to put the four-gram computer back together again.\nApple provides “battery service” for AirPods, at the cost of $49 per earbud. But functionally, Apple simply gives you a replacement pair, and the old earbuds are recycled. It’s not a repair, it’s a replacement. And it’s expensive. AirPods originally cost $159, so opting for battery service costs more than half of the price of a new pair.\nApple sold about 72.8 million AirPods units in 2020, according to a CounterPoint research estimate, so tens of millions of consumers will face the same lack of choice in the coming years.\nPodSwap is a Miami company founded by Emma Stritzinger and Emily Alpert which aims to keep AirPods “out of the landfill.” They’re not associated with Apple.\nThey believe they’re the only company performing AirPod battery replacements, although other companies “refurbish” old AirPods, the founders told CNBC. The company was formed after the founders experienced dying AirPods themselves and thought that upgrading or replacing them would be wasteful and impractical.\nI recently replaced a pair of AirPods that were only holding a charge for 45 minutes -- too short to complete a phone call. I paid $59 on PodSwap’s Shopify site and a few days later received a replacement pair of AirPods with new batteries. They weren’t my old AirPods, they were another set that had their batteries replaced.\nAlong with those new pods, PodSwap includes a box and a return label. It wants your old AirPods back. It then cleans and sanitizes the old pair, puts in new batteries and sends them out to the next person who wants to change the battery in their old AirPods.\nBut PodSwap faces many challenges that show why repair advocates want new rules. Alpert said the design of the AirPod makes it challenging for repair shops or companies like theirs to do a lot of battery replacements. PodSwap’s process uses both robotics and manual labor, the founders said.\n“The process was developed through trial and error and a large number of units were ‘sacrificed’ and ultimately recycled. One major challenge we faced was overcoming the uniqueness of this product. Each AirPod is assembled with slight differences, which creates complexity in the disassembly,” Alpert said.\nPodSwap plans to soon offer service for the AirPods Pro, a newer model that costs $249 and are, surprisingly, powered by a standard-sized coin battery.\nBut the AirPods Pro have many of the same problems as the first model — tight tolerances, potential damage while taking them apart, a lack of replacement parts, and a design that suggests the product was always designed to last a limited time.\n“We have found the AirPods Pro’s batteries to be more difficult to replace,” Alpert said. “The ergonomic design and tight unforgiving tolerances make it exceptionally challenging to replace the batteries repeatedly, with a high degree of efficiency.”\nPodSwap wasn’t totally seamless for me — I got sent a combination of “first generation” and “second generation” AirPods. They caused my iPhone to send error messages, but I sent an email to PodSwap and a day or two later I got a second replacement set, which worked.\nAfter that, I sent my first replacement set and my old AirPods back. The AirPods I received look and work like new.\nI plan on trying to get another four years out of them.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":118,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":899886431,"gmtCreate":1628173645223,"gmtModify":1703502595065,"author":{"id":"4088467012186210","authorId":"4088467012186210","name":"andy1216","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/653530be86acad69c77bb71bf41481e5","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088467012186210","authorIdStr":"4088467012186210"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Then invest for long term :S","listText":"Then invest for long term :S","text":"Then invest for long term :S","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/899886431","repostId":"1175346944","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1175346944","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1628172732,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1175346944?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-08-05 22:12","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Tesla's Short-Term Advantages Aren't Enough","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1175346944","media":"seekingalpha","summary":"Contrary to common belief, Tesla has one main advantage over any competition emerging in the electric vehicle market, set to bolster its near-term prospects.Even so, current lofty valuation leaves little room for upside investment potential.I remain slightly bearish on the company's prospects.Tesla , the undoubted leader in the electric vehicle market, has had the share price run of a lifetime, rising nearly 1,500% over the past 24 months as markets rallied for the post-pandemic surge and the co","content":"
Summary
\n
\n
Contrary to common belief, Tesla has one main advantage over any competition emerging in the electric vehicle market, set to bolster its near-term prospects.
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; With the economy sprinting coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic, the big commercial and investment banks are expected toreport strong results.
\n
The banks are also expected to begin rewarding shareholders after the U.S. Federal Reserve recently cleared them to again payout dividends and buyback their own stock. Wall Street estimates forecast that the six biggest U.S. banks could return more than $140 billion to shareholders in coming months through dividends and share buybacks.
\n
Here are seven of the biggest American banks with earnings reports next week:
\n
\n
JPMorgan Chase(NYSE:JPM)
\n
Goldman Sachs(NYSE:GS)
\n
Bank of America(NYSE:BAC)
\n
Citigroup(NYSE:C)
\n
Wells Fargo(NYSE:WFC)
\n
Morgan Stanley(NYSE:MS)
\n
U.S. Bancorp(NYSE:USB)
\n
\n
JPMorgan Chase (JPM)
\n
First out of the gate next week is the biggest U.S. bank, JPMorgan Chase. The financial conglomerate led by Jamie Dimon has generated headlines for its spate of recent acquisitions. The bank has made 33 acquisitions so far this year, its biggest spending spree in several years. The deals have mostly involved small foreign money managers and digital banks in countries such as England and Brazil.
\n
JPMorgan Chase has said that it is pursuing acquisitions to contend with an ongoing low-interest-rate environment and greater competition from financial technology (fintech) companies.
\n
The deals completed in the first half of this year are on par with all the deals JPMorgan Chase completed last year. JPM stock has risen this year along with the entire bank sector. Year-to-date, JPM stock is up 22% to a July 9 open of $153.05. In the past 12 months, the stock has increased 66%. In this year’s first quarter, JPMorgan Chase’s earnings increased 477% to $4.50 per share diluted and beat analyst estimates of $3.06 a share. Earnings were given a significant boost by $5.2 billion of net reserves that the bank had built up in 2020 during the pandemic.
\n
For the second-quarter results to be released on July 13, analysts are forecasting revenue of $30 billion and earnings per share (EPS) of $3.03.
\n
Goldman Sachs (GS)
\n
Leading investment bank Goldman Sachs also reports second-quarter results on July 13, and expectations are high for blockbuster earnings. The venerable Wall Street firm set the bar high earlier this year when it reported record first quarter results that blew away expectations. Fueled by a record amount of investment banking activity, Goldman Sachs reported first quarter revenues of $17.7 billion, way ahead of the $12.6 billion forecast by analysts. EPS for the bank came in at $18.60, destroying the $10.22 estimated by analysts and 498% higher than in the first quarter of 2020.
\n
Can Goldman do it again with its second-quarter results? The consensus among analysts is for the investment bank to report second-quarter EPS of $9.52 a share, for year-over-year growth of 52%. Should Goldman Sachs beat expectations by a wide margin, it will likely propel the company’s share price to new heights. In this year’s first half, GS stock rose 40% to its July 9 opening price of $366. In the past year, the stock has gained 77%.
\n
Despite the big run in the bank’s share price, analysts see further gains in store. The median price target on GS stock is $415, implying another 13% gain in coming months.
\n
Bank of America (BAC)
\n
The second-largest U.S. bank by assets, Bank of America, reports its latest quarterly numbers on July 14. And the lender has been signaling that Wall Street should expect solid second-quarter results. Chief Executive Officer Brian Moynihan has been saying publicly that Bank of America is emerging from the pandemic a stronger and more competitive financial institution, helped by higher capital ratios and higher reserves. In the first quarter, the bank reported record levels of deposits, investment flows and investment banking revenues.
\n
Bank of America attracted the attention of investors when it announced on June 28 that it will increase its common stock dividend by 17% to 21 cents per share for the third quarter of this year. This came after the bank announced a $25 billion share buyback plan in April. For the second quarter, Bank of America is expected to report EPS of 77 cents, more than doubling Q2 2020’s $0.37.
\n
In this year’s first quarter, Bank of America posted EPS of 86 cents, up 115% year-over-year and above the consensus forecast of 66 cents. First quarter revenues were up a slight 0.2% to $22.8 billion, beating analysts’ estimates of $22.13 billion. BAC stock has climbed 32% higher year-to-date to $39.65 a share as of July 9. In the past 12 months, the share price has increased 73%. While the stock pulled back in the middle of June, next week’s earnings could spark the next leg higher.
\n
Citigroup (C)
\n
On July 14, we’ll also get earnings from Citigroup. And the latest results come at a time when C stock has been struggling and, at its July 9 level of $66.73 a share, is starting to look a little undervalued compared to its peers.
\n
Citigroup’s share price is up 11% year-to-date and has risen 34% over the last 52 weeks. Those are decent returns, but they trail the other big banks featured in this article. In the past month, Citigroup’s share price has slumped 14%. The June drop came after the bank warned that its trading revenue will likely decline by 30% this year on weak deal volumes.
\n
Despite the downward guidance, analysts still expect Citigroup to report earnings growth for the second quarter of this year. The bank is forecast to post EPS of $1.91 next week, which would be a year-over-year increase of nearly 300%. However, revenues are expected to come in at $17.35 billion, which would be about 10% lower than the second quarter of 2020 revenue of $19.77 billion. Many analysts revised down their revenue forecasts after Citigroup warned of rising costs. Chief Financial Officer Mark Mason said on June 16 that he expects second-quarter expenses to increase by as much as $11.6 billion.
\n
Wells Fargo (WFC)
\n
San Francisco-based Wells Fargo, which reports earnings on July 14, recently dominated headlines after it announced that it is closing out all of its existing personal lines of credit and will no longer offer the financial product. Lines of credit typically give retail customers loans of $3,000 to $100,000 and is often used to consolidate higher-interest credit card debt, pay for home renovations and fund college educations.
\n
The news came as a jolt to Wells Fargo customers, who were informed by the bank that the credit line closures “may have an impact on your credit score.”
\n
Eliminating the lines of credit is the latest move by Wells Fargo as it reviews its operations coming out the pandemic. The steps taken to date seem to be winning approval from investors. WFC stock is one of the best performing among banks this year. So far this year, Wells Fargo stock has gained 44% and now trades at $43.18. The share price is up 77% over the last year. For its second quarter, analysts expect Wells Fargo to report EPS of 93 cents on $17.78 billion in revenues.
\n
Morgan Stanley (MS)
\n
Investment bank Morgan Stanley won praise from investors a few weeks back after it became the first Wall Street firm to increase its dividend payout after passing the U.S. Federal Reserve’s latest stress test. A day after getting the all clear from the central bank, Morgan Stanley announced that it is doubling its quarterly dividend to 70 cents per share starting in this year’s third quarter and spending $12 billion to buy back its own stock. The share repurchase program will run for the next four quarters.
\n
The positive news for shareholders helped to extend a rally in MS stock, which is now up 31% year-to-date at $87.40 a share, and up 79% over the past 12 months. Similar to rival investment bank Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley’s first quarter revenue toppled analyst expectations. For the first three months of this year, Morgan Stanley reported EPS of $2.22 a share, a substantial improvement over projections of $1.70. And the company’s revenue increased 61% in the first quarter to a record $15.7 billion, beating analysts’ estimates by $1.6 billion.
\n
For the second quarter reporting on July 15, analysts forecast that Morgan Stanley will report EPS of $1.65 on revenue of $13.96 billion.
\n
U.S. Bancorp (USB)
\n
Probably the least-known bank on this list is Minneapolis, Minnesota-based U.S. Bancorp. While it primarily operates in the Midwest, U.S. Bancorp is currently the fifth-largest American bank with assets approaching $500 billion. Often referred to as a“super regional bank”because of its size and performance, the lender is a long-term holding of legendary investor Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway(NYSE:BRK.B) holding company. Buffett currently has more than $8 billion invested in USB stock.
\n
Year-to-date, USB stock is up 22%, opening July 9 at $56.08 a share. In the past 12 months, the share price has climbed 60% higher. However, like the rest of the banking sector, U.S. Bancorp’s stock pulled back over the past month, dipping 6% on worries that inflation is abating and interest rates may remain at historic lows over the medium-term.
\n
As for its earnings on July 15, analysts expect the lender to report EPS of $1.12 for the second quarter on revenues of $5.63 billion. In this year’s first quarter, U.S. Bancorp reported EPS of $1.45, beating consensus estimates of 96 cents.
