CareTrust REIT</h2><p>CareTrust is a healthcare-focused real estate investment trust (REIT) that pays an impressive yield of 6.6%. The stock has been falling this year amid general softness in the stock market and worries about a possible recession. However, that hasn&#39;t stopped the REIT from providing a top dividend. Last year, it was paying its shareholders $0.265 every quarter, and now that dividend payment is up to $0.275, representing an increase of 3.8%. On an annualized basis, that means investors are collecting $1.10 per share in dividend income.</p><p>Although REITs have to pay out 90% of their earnings back to investors, they rely on funds from operations (FFO) to evaluate the safety of their dividend payments. The latest increase, its 21st in a row, is no surprise for shareholders as the company says its long-term contracts allow it to generate predictable earnings numbers and enable it to consistently grow its dividend. The $0.02 hike is just as large as the <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> it announced last year. At $2.72 in dividends per share over the course of a full year, the stock now yields 3.7%.</p><p>The news of the hike came just before Southern announced its latest quarterly results, covering the first three months of 2022. But on an adjusted basis, they remained nearly identical to the $0.98 that the company reported during the same period last year. However, that sell-off reduced Qualcomm&#39;s forward price-to-earnings ratio to just 13 and boosted its forward dividend yield to about 2%.</p><p>Qualcomm spent 41% of its FCF on its dividends over the past 12 months, and has raised its dividend annually for nearly two decades. Often, the best decision you can make is deciding to do nothing at all, taking your lumps on faith those beaten-down stocks will eventually recover.</p>\n<p>With that as the backdrop, here's a closer look at three long-term investments you can actually commit to for the long term. Each <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> is built not only to last, but to thrive no matter what the future has in store.</p>\n<h2>1. Alphabet</h2>\n<p>Sure, it's technically a consumer tech name, and technology is generally prone to being made obsolete by, well, newer technologies. If there were ever a tech name shielded from the never-ending cycle of improved tech, though, it's likely Google parent<b> Alphabet</b> (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL).</p>\n<p>Think about it. While there was a time when consumers clearly functioned without either one, the internet and smartphones have become de facto centerpieces of our lives. Chances are, we're not going to give them up now. And Alphabet is the powerhouse on both fronts, with Google fielding 92% of the world's web searches (according to numbers from GlobalStats' statcounter) and its Android mobile operating system installed on nearly 73% of the world's mobile devices. In fact, when broadening this look to all consumer tech devices like notebooks and tablets, there are more Android-powered devices than there are machines running <b>Microsoft</b> Windows.</p>\n<p>This reach of course positions Google as a gatekeeper to the world wide web, giving Alphabet a variety of ways to monetize all of its platforms.</p>\n<p>And it's done so quite well. The company's year-over-year revenue comparison has fallen in only two quarters since 2006, and one of those quarters was the second quarter of last year when the COVID-19 pandemic was rapidly spreading. In fact, we've also only seen the company's quarterly top line fall twice on a sequential basis -- from the previous calendar quarter -- for the same time frame, and again, one of those two instances was linked to COVID-19. It's all due to consumers' habitual reliance on Google and/or their Android devices.</p>\n<h2>2. Walt Disney</h2>\n<p>Entertainment giant <b>Walt Disney</b> (NYSE:DIS) is nowhere near as consistent as Alphabet when it comes to driving revenue; the pandemic was downright devastating to the company. Nevertheless, Disney is a long-term winner -- not because it does one thing incredibly well, but because it can do a variety of things incredibly well when one piece of its business is struggling.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F643205%2Folder-investors.jpg&amp;w=700&amp;op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>You likely know all about Disney's theme parks and movies. You've also heard plenty of late about their streaming platform, Disney+. What you may not realize, however, is how minor those ventures are compared to the company's other lower-profile operations.</p>\n<p>Before COVID-19 rattled the world beginning in early 2020, television -- Disney, ESPN, and ABC -- collectively accounted for roughly one-third of Walt Disney's revenue, parks and resorts along with licensed product sales made up another third of its top line, films were 16% of its business mix, and its direct-to-consumer and international arm (think Hulu and ESPN+) contributed 13% of its top line. With the pandemic still crimping some segments of the entertainment industry and after the launch of Disney+, direct-to-consumer alone now makes up nearly one-third of the company's top line, while other divisions now contribute relatively less revenue.</p>\n<p>But that's the point. Walt Disney's always got something to sell to someone; oftentimes it's got several products and services to offer to the same consumers. It may not be completely recession-proof, but it's certainly recession-resistant, and it's also able to capture more than its fair share of growth stemming from a strong economy.</p>\n<h2>3. SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust</h2>\n<p>Finally, add the <b>SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust</b> (NYSEMKT:SPY) to your list of long-term investments you'll be glad you tucked away.</p>\n<p>Unlike Walt Disney and Alphabet, owning an index-based fund isn't an attempt to outperform the market. It's just an attempt to match the market's overall performance; in some ways it's also an admission that, given enough time, you probably can't beat the market.</p>\n<p>Statistically speaking though, that's not a bad bet.</p>\n<p>Data from Standard &amp; Poor's tells the story, pointing out that measuring results from the end of the year 2000 and the end of 2020, around 94% of actively managed mutual funds available to U.S. investors didn't perform as well as the <b>S&amp;P 500 Index</b> (SNPINDEX:^GSPC). The results are similarly bad when you look at shorter time frames.</p>\n<p>Why can't many of these professional fund managers do what they're presumably trained and paid to do even when they're giving it a full-time effort? Because timing trade entries and exits is hard to do well. That doesn't prevent these folks from attempting it in their hunt for market-beating results, however.</p>\n<p>It's possible you could have better luck. In fact, the whole purpose of highlighting Alphabet and Walt Disney is that these two names have the potential to outpace the broad market's gains.</p>\n<p>Both of those individual stock picks still require long-term holding periods to make the most of their potential, though. Often, the best decision you can make is deciding to do nothing at all, taking your lumps on faith those beaten-down stocks will eventually recover.\nWith that as the backdrop, here's a closer look at three long-term investments you can actually commit to for the long term. Each one is built not only to last, but to thrive no matter what the future has in store.\n1. Alphabet\nSure, it's technically a consumer tech name, and technology is generally prone to being made obsolete by, well, newer technologies. If there were ever a tech name shielded from the never-ending cycle of improved tech, though, it's likely Google parent Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL).\nThink about it. While there was a time when consumers clearly functioned without either one, the internet and smartphones have become de facto centerpieces of our lives. Chances are, we're not going to give them up now. And Alphabet is the powerhouse on both fronts, with Google fielding 92% of the world's web searches (according to numbers from GlobalStats' statcounter) and its Android mobile operating system installed on nearly 73% of the world's mobile devices. In fact, when broadening this look to all consumer tech devices like notebooks and tablets, there are more Android-powered devices than there are machines running Microsoft Windows.\nThis reach of course positions Google as a gatekeeper to the world wide web, giving Alphabet a variety of ways to monetize all of its platforms.\nAnd it's done so quite well. The company's year-over-year revenue comparison has fallen in only two quarters since 2006, and one of those quarters was the second quarter of last year when the COVID-19 pandemic was rapidly spreading. In fact, we've also only seen the company's quarterly top line fall twice on a sequential basis -- from the previous calendar quarter -- for the same time frame, and again, one of those two instances was linked to COVID-19. It's all due to consumers' habitual reliance on Google and/or their Android devices.\n2. Walt Disney\nEntertainment giant Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS) is nowhere near as consistent as Alphabet when it comes to driving revenue; the pandemic was downright devastating to the company. Nevertheless, Disney is a long-term winner -- not because it does one thing incredibly well, but because it can do a variety of things incredibly well when one piece of its business is struggling.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nYou likely know all about Disney's theme parks and movies. You've also heard plenty of late about their streaming platform, Disney+. What you may not realize, however, is how minor those ventures are compared to the company's other lower-profile operations.\nBefore COVID-19 rattled the world beginning in early 2020, television -- Disney, ESPN, and ABC -- collectively accounted for roughly one-third of Walt Disney's revenue, parks and resorts along with licensed product sales made up another third of its top line, films were 16% of its business mix, and its direct-to-consumer and international arm (think Hulu and ESPN+) contributed 13% of its top line. With the pandemic still crimping some segments of the entertainment industry and after the launch of Disney+, direct-to-consumer alone now makes up nearly one-third of the company's top line, while other divisions now contribute relatively less revenue.\nBut that's the point. Walt Disney's always got something to sell to someone; oftentimes it's got several products and services to offer to the same consumers. It may not be completely recession-proof, but it's certainly recession-resistant, and it's also able to capture more than its fair share of growth stemming from a strong economy.\n3. SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust\nFinally, add the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEMKT:SPY) to your list of long-term investments you'll be glad you tucked away.\nUnlike Walt Disney and Alphabet, owning an index-based fund isn't an attempt to outperform the market. It's just an attempt to match the market's overall performance; in some ways it's also an admission that, given enough time, you probably can't beat the market.\nStatistically speaking though, that's not a bad bet.\nData from Standard & Poor's tells the story, pointing out that measuring results from the end of the year 2000 and the end of 2020, around 94% of actively managed mutual funds available to U.S. investors didn't perform as well as the S&P 500 Index (SNPINDEX:^GSPC). The results are similarly bad when you look at shorter time frames.\nWhy can't many of these professional fund managers do what they're presumably trained and paid to do even when they're giving it a full-time effort? Because timing trade entries and exits is hard to do well. That doesn't prevent these folks from attempting it in their hunt for market-beating results, however.\nIt's possible you could have better luck. In fact, the whole purpose of highlighting Alphabet and Walt Disney is that these two names have the potential to outpace the broad market's gains.\nBoth of those individual stock picks still require long-term holding periods to make the most of their potential, though. The unemployment rate dropped to 3.6%, a new two-year low while average hourly earnings rose 5.6% on a year-over-year basis.</p><p>The report heightened expectations that the central bank is likely to become more aggressive in raising interest rates as it seeks to curb inflation as it unwinds its easy monetary policy.</p><p>&#34;Job gains were broad, more people are going back to the office,&#34; said Brian Jacobsen, senior investment strategist at Allspring Global Investments in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.</p><p>&#34;If other data between now and the next Fed meeting stay this rosy, the Fed will likely feel comfortable hiking by 50 basis points and announcing an aggressive rundown of its balance sheet.&#34;</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 139.92 points, or 0.4%, to 34,818.27, the S&amp;P 500 gained 15.45 points, or 0.34%, to 4,545.86 and the Nasdaq Composite added 40.98 points, or 0.29%, to 14,261.50.</p><p>The defensive real estate, utilities and consumer staples were the best performing sectors on the day, with each rising more than 1%.</p><p>For the week, the Dow slipped 0.1%, the S&amp;P edged up 0.1% and the Nasdaq advanced 0.7%.</p><p>Expectations for a 50-basis point interest rate hike at the central bank&#39;s May meeting stand at 73.3%, according to CME&#39;s FedWatch Tool.</p><p>At its March meeting, the Fed raised rates by 25 basis 25 basis points, its first hike since 2018, and a host of central bank policymakers have indicated they are prepared for bigger rate hikes.</p><p>Chicago Federal Reserve President Charles Evans said on Friday he does not see a big risk in using &#34;some&#34; half-point rate hikes to bring borrowing costs to neutral sooner as long as the objective was not to raise rates much faster and push them higher.</p><p>Other data on Friday showed U.S. manufacturing activity unexpectedly slowed in March, although it remained firmly in expansion territory, as tight supply chains continued to put upward pressure on input prices.</p><p>In the wake of the payrolls report, U.S. Treasury yields jumped and a closely watched part of the yield curve between two-year and 10-year notes, seen by many as a reliable indicator of a recession, inverted for the third time this week.</p><p>The S&amp;P 500 closed out the first quarter on Thursday with its biggest quarterly decline since the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. was reaching full swing on concerns about rising prices, fueled further by the war in Ukraine, and the Fed&#39;s response could slow economic growth. And massive investments in infrastructure could help the sector keep its momentum in the coming decades. <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\">Facebook</a></b> (NASDAQ:FB) is installing a subsea cable called 2Africa that will provide almost triple the network capacity of all subsea cables currently serving the continent by 2023. <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GOOG\">Alphabet</a></b>'s (NASDAQ:GOOG)(NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google is undertaking a similar project called Equiano, expected to complete the first phase this year.</p>\n<p>But internet penetration doesn't guarantee e-commerce adoption. And Jumia's challenge will be to overcome Africa's hard infrastructure challenges (roads, bridges, and the like) while encouraging the adoption of a brand new way of shopping for many people. So far, the results aren't encouraging.&nbsp;</p>\n<h2>Growing at a snail's pace</h2>\n<p>Jumia's first-quarter revenue increased by a measly 4.6% year over year to $40.2 million. And that wasn't even driven by its core third-party e-commerce marketplace, where annual active customers only grew just 3.3% to 7 million. Marketing and advertising (up 18%) was the company's best-performing segment in the quarter, but this opportunity has a very limited runway for expansion with user growth so slow.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>To make matters worse, the total value of goods sold on Jumia (gross merchandise value) declined by 11% to 223.5 million as consumers shifted from high-value items like phones to everyday items like toiletries. </p>\n<p>This slowdown is alarming because Jumia is still far from profitable and would benefit from more scale to cover its overhead. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BGC\">General</a> and administrative costs totaled a whopping $34.2 million (85% of revenue) in the second quarter, and its operating loss increased 25% year over year to $51.6 million in the period.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>That said, management is taking steps to turn things around. Jumia is boosting its investment in marketing and technology and has begun testing micro fulfillment centers in highly populated areas to help deliver groceries. It is also developing social commerce features like user-generated content (video/picture uploads). But it could take years for these efforts to trickle down to the company's bottom line, and that's a long wait for shareholders.</p>\n<h2>Jumia is not a buy (yet)</h2>\n<p>While Jumia faces massive challenges, I don't think it's a write-off. The African e-commerce market has potential, but it isn't mature yet. And Jumia might have arrived too early to create a viable business in the niche.</p>\n<p> But the company has accumulated logistics infrastructure, along with user data and experience that could be valuable in the right hands. But the shares, around $185, are off nearly 30% after the company recently cut 2021 financial guidance, citing Covid-related staffing and cost issues, mostly in acquired hospice operations. The 2021 earnings estimate is now $6.13 a share, down from nearly $7. The stock trades for 30 times projected 2021 profits. Cole says that the company remains capable of generating 10% annual gains in earnings per share.</p>\n<p>Amyris(AMRS) is a leader in synthetic biology. It fans say its opportunity is to supplant, in an eco-friendly way, a range of products now made from petrochemicals, animals, and plants.</p>\n<p>Using genetically re-engineered yeast and sugar cane, Amyris produces such things as squalane, a high-end moisturizer formerly made from shark livers; vanillin, the flavoring for vanilla; and a no-calorie sweetener normally derived from plants. The stock trades around $13.</p>\n<p><i>Barron’s</i>&nbsp;wrote&nbsp;favorably on the company in July. Amyris sees sales reaching $2 billion by 2025, up from an estimated $400 million this year, driven by its consumer brands.</p>\n<p>“The world needs clean chemistry, and Amyris is the point on the spear to create it,” says Randy Baron, a portfolio manager at Pinnacle Associates, which owns Amyris shares. He thinks they could hit $75 by the end of 2022.</p>\n<p>Booz Allen Hamilton Holding(BAH) is an important consultant to the Defense Department and other agencies. The U.S. government accounted for 97% of its revenue in its latest fiscal year. Booz Allen has built robust ties to the government over the years by providing an array of services, like cybersecurity. Its stock trades around $81, for a 1.8% yield.</p>\n<p>“It has built a strong, partnership-like culture and has a long record of steady growth,” says Josh Spencer, manager of the T. Rowe Price New Horizons fund. He sees Booz Allen as capable of generating 9% to 10% annual growth in revenue and yearly gains of 15% to 16% in earnings, in line with its historical performance. The stock is off 20% from its peak of $100, amid concerns about more restrained military spending. Spencer sees the pullback as a buying opportunity, with the stock valued at less than 20 times earnings.</p>\n<p>J.B. Hunt Transport Services(JBHT) is a leader in intermodal freight, which involves the fuel-efficient movement of trucks over rail lines. It has been one of the most successful trucking companies. Its stock has risen 30-fold over the past 20 years, to a recent $173. “It has an incredible franchise,” says Henry Ellenbogen, chief investment officer at Durable Capital Partners and a member of the&nbsp;Barron’s Roundtable.</p>\n<p>J.B. Hunt’s relationship with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad gives it a strong position in intermodal freight, he notes. J.B. Hunt also has a growing business taking over the trucking operations of smaller companies. And it is involved in digital freight brokerage—matching truckers with shipping customers.</p>\n<p>Ellenbogen says the stock is reasonable at 22 times estimated 2022 profits, given a mid-teens annual growth outlook for earnings.</p>\n<p>Marriott Vacations Worldwide(VAC) is one of the top companies in the timeshare industry. It has 700,000 owners, a resilient business model with significant revenue from fees, and more exposure than its peers to luxury properties in places including Hawaii and Orlando, Fla.</p>\n<p>“It has the best customer base, with the highest spending and an impeccable balance sheet,” says David Baron, a manager of the Baron Focused Growth fund. Marriott Vacations, whose shares recently were trading around $145, should reinstate its dividend later this year, he adds.</p>\n<p>The shares, Baron argues, are cheap at a 11% free-cash-flow yield, based on 2022 estimates. He says that the stock, little changed since 2018, could produce 20% annual returns for shareholders in the coming years.</p>\n<p>SiteOne Landscape Supply(SITE) is the country’s top supplier of landscaping products, with ample opportunity to expand, given that it has just a 13% market share in a highly fragmented industry.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>“It’s growing organically and has lots of acquisition opportunities,” says Columbia’s Cole, who considers the company to be capable of 10% to 15% annual revenue growth.</p>\n<p>The stock, around $197, has a rich valuation, trading for 43 times projected 2022 earnings of $4.54 a share.</p>\n<p>Staar Surgical(STAA) has developed an implantable lens to correct myopia (nearsightedness). That addresses a potentially huge market, given the rising global incidence of that vision problem. The company expects the lens, which has been available in Europe and Asia for at least five years, to be on the U.S. market in the fourth quarter, pending Food and Drug Administration approval.</p>\n<p>“It could do substantial volumes,’’ says Doug Brodie, a global manager at Baillie Gifford. “It’s early in a journey and is largely devoid of competition.”</p>\n<p>Lenses for both eyes can be implanted in less than an hour, and they don’t involve the removal of the natural lenses. The wholesale cost in the U.S. could be around $1,000 per lens.</p>\n<p>At a recent $138, Staar shares are richly valued at more than 20 times projected 2022 sales and 140 times estimated 2022 earnings. But the market opportunity is enormous: Some five billion people worldwide could have myopia by 2050.</p>\n<p>Stitch Fix(SFIX) has developed a subscription service for clothing, shoes, and other accessories and boasts over four million customers.</p>\n<p>“This could be the Nordstrom of the future,” says Mario Cibelli, chief investment officer at Marathon Partners Equity Management, a Stitch Fix holder. “This a potentially huge market and nobody is addressing it in the same way.” Using a staff of 6,000 personal stylists and lots of data, Stitch Fix seeks to identify subscriber tastes to generate high satisfaction and limit returns on packages sent at intervals and determined by subscribers.</p>\n<p>Its shares, around $44, are down 60% from their level earlier in the year, on investors’ worries about potential churn and the business’s ultimate profitability.</p>\n<p>Yet Cibelli sees revenue growth of 20%-plus annually, opportunities outside its current U.S. and U.K. markets, and a potentially very profitable business in two to three years.</p>\n<p>Trex(TREX) is the top producer of a high-end wood alternative for decks that comes from 95% recycled material, making it an eco-friendly housing play. The shares, at $105, trade for 43 times projected 2022 earnings.</p>\n<p>T. Rowe Price’s Spencer views Trex as worth the price, based on his view that it can generate sustainable annual revenue growth of 15% to 20%. Earnings are expected to climb by about 20% in 2022 and at a similar pace in the following years. “If you roll the clock forward three years, it doesn’t look as expensive,” he says.</p>\n<p>Upwork(UPWK), an online marketplace for freelance workers, is favored by Baillie Gifford’s Brodie, who says it offers a play on the greater acceptance of freelancers by businesses.</p>\n<p>The shares, recently around $44, aren’t cheap. Upwork is valued at $5.7 billion, or more than 10 times this year’s projected sales of nearly $500 million. It operates at a slight loss.</p>\n<p>The investment case is about rapid sales growth leading to ample earnings. Sales are expected to rise by 30%-plus this year and 25% for 2022.</p>\n<p>“Freelancers are more accepted by small to midsize business, but they’ve been frowned on by the HR departments at large businesses,” Brodie says.
