What's more, Applied's guidance turned out to be strong as well, fueled by the massive growth in semiconductor investments across the globe as chipmakers are scrambling to meet huge end-market demand.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/36e7c524b510f3ddf875d48fa2f3ac29\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"393\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>It's worth noting that Applied Materials stock is now trading at a cheaper valuation than it was before the quarterly report came out, thanks to the terrific earnings growth. Its price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is just 23, while the forward earnings multiple of 17 indicates that more bottom-line growth is in the cards. These multiples are lower than the <b>S&amp;P 500 Index</b>'s trailing P/E of 31 and forward P/E of 22.</p>\n<p>That means there's a golden opportunity for investors to add a rapidly growing company to their portfolios at an attractive valuation, and they shouldn't miss out. Let's look at some reasons.</p>\n<h2>Applied Materials is now growing at a blistering pace</h2>\n<p>A $1,000 investment in Applied Materials stock a decade ago would be worth almost $12,000 now:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/81e0104d17e81fcbfbe06af299b88f05\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>AMAT data by YCharts.</span></p>\n<p>However, as the chart above shows, the company's top and bottom lines haven't exactly grown at a blistering pace over the past 10 years. Its revenue just about doubled, while earnings growth hasn't been eye-popping either, considering the pace at which the broader market's bottom line has increased. Also, as the chart indicates, most of Applied Materials' gains arrived in the past year and a half, after it became evident that the company's offerings would remain in hot demand amid a global semiconductor shortage that has disrupted several industries.</p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, Applied Materials' revenue and earnings have been growing at a much faster pace when compared to its average annual growth in the past 10 years. The company delivered record quarterly revenue of $6.2 billion in Q3, up 41% year over year. It also clocked a record (adjusted) operating margin of 32.7%, a jump of 6.3 percentage points over the prior year.</p>\n<p>The terrific sales and margin growth led to record adjusted earnings of $1.90 per share, up 79% from the year-ago quarter. The results crushed the expectations of analysts who'd been looking for $1.77 per share in earnings on $5.94 billion in revenue.</p>\n<p>Applied Materials' guidance was the icing on the cake. The company expects, at the midpoint of its guidance range, to earn $1.94 per share this quarter on revenue of $6.33 billion. Wall Street had set the bar lower; analysts were expecting just $1.81 in earnings per share on $6.04 billion in revenue. The midpoint of the guidance indicates that Applied is anticipating 35% year-over-year revenue growth this quarter, while non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings could increase 55%.</p>\n<p>The impressive guidance is a clue that Applied Materials has switched into a higher gear, and it's unlikely to step off the gas given the massive end-market opportunity at hand. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising to see its growth over the next decade significantly outpacing the rate at which it's grown in the past 10 years, helping the stock to fly higher once again.</p>\n<h2>Sustainable growth drivers can help the stock soar</h2>\n<p>Applied Materials supplies chip fabrication equipment, services, and software to semiconductor manufacturers. Its largest source of revenue is the semiconductor systems business, through which Applied develops, manufactures, and sells semiconductor fabrication equipment. This segment produced nearly 72% of the company's total revenue last quarter and recorded 53% year-over-year growth.</p>\n<p>Within the semiconductor systems business, the foundry/logic vertical occupied the largest share with 63% of total revenue, up from 55% in the year-ago quarter. The foundry business is built for long-term growth, as chipmakers across the globe are ramping up capacity. For instance, global semiconductor capital spending stood at an estimated $29.4 billion in 2010, according to <b>Gartner</b>. Last year, that number had ballooned to $106.9 billion.</p>\n<p>Gartner estimates that global semiconductor spending will rise to $141.9 billion this year. Spending on semiconductor equipment can keep moving higher in the coming years on the back of a huge jump in chip demand.</p>\n<p>Applied Materials points out that the semiconductor industry took 40 years to achieve its first $200 billion in revenue; from 2000 to 2017, the industry added the next $200 billion. An additional $200 billion of revenue is expected by 2024, over a shorter span of just seven years. What's more, the semiconductor industry's revenue is anticipated to increase a whopping $400 billion from 2025 to 2030, hitting $1 trillion at the end of the forecast period.</p>\n<p>Chipmakers will need to buy new equipment or upgrade their existing setups to cater to this massive increase in semiconductor demand, which will be driven by several verticals including automotive, networking, and industrial. Discussing \"PPACt\" (chip power efficiency, performance, area, cost, and time to market), Applied Materials CEO Gary Dickerson said on the Q3 earnings call that the company is on track to take advantage of these tailwinds and outperform the broader market:</p>\n<blockquote>\n As we look ahead, we are confident that the strength of longer-term secular trends will drive semiconductor and wafer fab equipment markets structurally higher. And we believe Applied is in the best position to accelerate our customers' PPACt roadmaps, and grow significantly faster than our markets.\n</blockquote>\n<p>All of this indicates that Applied Materials is in a solid position to deliver more upside. Analysts expect the company's earnings to clock a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 25% for the next five years. What's more, Applied's guidance turned out to be strong as well, fueled by the massive growth in semiconductor investments across the globe as chipmakers are scrambling to meet huge end-market demand.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nIt's worth noting that Applied Materials stock is now trading at a cheaper valuation than it was before the quarterly report came out, thanks to the terrific earnings growth. Its price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is just 23, while the forward earnings multiple of 17 indicates that more bottom-line growth is in the cards. These multiples are lower than the S&P 500 Index's trailing P/E of 31 and forward P/E of 22.\nThat means there's a golden opportunity for investors to add a rapidly growing company to their portfolios at an attractive valuation, and they shouldn't miss out. Let's look at some reasons.\nApplied Materials is now growing at a blistering pace\nA $1,000 investment in Applied Materials stock a decade ago would be worth almost $12,000 now:\nAMAT data by YCharts.\nHowever, as the chart above shows, the company's top and bottom lines haven't exactly grown at a blistering pace over the past 10 years. Its revenue just about doubled, while earnings growth hasn't been eye-popping either, considering the pace at which the broader market's bottom line has increased. Also, as the chart indicates, most of Applied Materials' gains arrived in the past year and a half, after it became evident that the company's offerings would remain in hot demand amid a global semiconductor shortage that has disrupted several industries.\nNot surprisingly, Applied Materials' revenue and earnings have been growing at a much faster pace when compared to its average annual growth in the past 10 years. The company delivered record quarterly revenue of $6.2 billion in Q3, up 41% year over year. It also clocked a record (adjusted) operating margin of 32.7%, a jump of 6.3 percentage points over the prior year.\nThe terrific sales and margin growth led to record adjusted earnings of $1.90 per share, up 79% from the year-ago quarter. The results crushed the expectations of analysts who'd been looking for $1.77 per share in earnings on $5.94 billion in revenue.\nApplied Materials' guidance was the icing on the cake. The company expects, at the midpoint of its guidance range, to earn $1.94 per share this quarter on revenue of $6.33 billion. Wall Street had set the bar lower; analysts were expecting just $1.81 in earnings per share on $6.04 billion in revenue. The midpoint of the guidance indicates that Applied is anticipating 35% year-over-year revenue growth this quarter, while non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings could increase 55%.\nThe impressive guidance is a clue that Applied Materials has switched into a higher gear, and it's unlikely to step off the gas given the massive end-market opportunity at hand. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising to see its growth over the next decade significantly outpacing the rate at which it's grown in the past 10 years, helping the stock to fly higher once again.\nSustainable growth drivers can help the stock soar\nApplied Materials supplies chip fabrication equipment, services, and software to semiconductor manufacturers. Its largest source of revenue is the semiconductor systems business, through which Applied develops, manufactures, and sells semiconductor fabrication equipment. This segment produced nearly 72% of the company's total revenue last quarter and recorded 53% year-over-year growth.\nWithin the semiconductor systems business, the foundry/logic vertical occupied the largest share with 63% of total revenue, up from 55% in the year-ago quarter. The foundry business is built for long-term growth, as chipmakers across the globe are ramping up capacity. For instance, global semiconductor capital spending stood at an estimated $29.4 billion in 2010, according to Gartner. Last year, that number had ballooned to $106.9 billion.\nGartner estimates that global semiconductor spending will rise to $141.9 billion this year. Spending on semiconductor equipment can keep moving higher in the coming years on the back of a huge jump in chip demand.\nApplied Materials points out that the semiconductor industry took 40 years to achieve its first $200 billion in revenue; from 2000 to 2017, the industry added the next $200 billion. An additional $200 billion of revenue is expected by 2024, over a shorter span of just seven years. What's more, the semiconductor industry's revenue is anticipated to increase a whopping $400 billion from 2025 to 2030, hitting $1 trillion at the end of the forecast period.\nChipmakers will need to buy new equipment or upgrade their existing setups to cater to this massive increase in semiconductor demand, which will be driven by several verticals including automotive, networking, and industrial. Discussing \"PPACt\" (chip power efficiency, performance, area, cost, and time to market), Applied Materials CEO Gary Dickerson said on the Q3 earnings call that the company is on track to take advantage of these tailwinds and outperform the broader market:\n\n As we look ahead, we are confident that the strength of longer-term secular trends will drive semiconductor and wafer fab equipment markets structurally higher. Not only NIO continues to improve its top and bottom-line performances quarter after quarter, but it’s also able to increase its Y/Y deliveries at a double-digit rate and is on track to deliver a record number of electric vehicles this year. On top of that, the launch of new models in the following years should also help the company to establish a greater presence in the ever-growing Chinese EV market. For that reason, we continue to own NIO’s shares and have no plans to unwind our position anytime soon.</p>\n<p><b>More Upside Ahead</b></p>\n<p>Founded in 2014, NIO develops three different premium electric SUVs under the names ES6, ES8, and EC6, but next year the company also plans to release an electric sedan called ET7, which will come with a solid-state battery. Thanks to the successful performance since the beginning of the pandemic, NIO became one of the dominant Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, which helped its shares to significantly outperform the rest of the market in the last 12 months. As of today, we continue to believe that NIO’s stock is one of the most attractive Chinese-based EV plays on the market right now.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1d218d050d6d6c3aff73b3015e2dd027\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"443\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Chart: Seeking Alpha</span></p>\n<p>Just last week NIO reported successful earnings results forQ2. Its revenues for the period were $1.31 billion, up 127% Y/Y, while its gross profit of $243.8 million was up 402.7% Y/Y. In addition, its vehicle margin increased to 20.3% at the end of the period, up from 9.7% a year ago. At the same time, the company’s non-GAAP EPS of -$0.07 was above the estimates by $0.04, as its net loss narrowed to $90.9 million. On top of all of this, NIO has also reached its goal of delivering nearly 22,000 vehicles during the quarter, despite the ongoing chip shortage crisis, which affected and continues to affect every automaker in the world from the beginning of this year.</p>\n<p>The positive thing about NIO is that just like Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA), the company started selling luxury electric vehicles first, but now it’s on its way to enter the mass market and create more affordable vehicles, which will lead to an even greater growth of the business. The company expects to launch three additional models in the next couple of years, one of which will be a new sedan ET7. On top of that, the company is also expected to continue to increase the number of cars sold in the following quarters and in Q3, it expects to deliver 23,000 to 25,000 vehicles, above the previous guidance of 21,000 to 22,000 vehicles. If that goal is reached, then NIO will be able to generate $1.38 billion to $1.49 billion in revenues during the quarter, which represents a growth of 97% Y/Y to 113% Y/Y. The completion of the quarterly goal will also help NIO to reach another goal of delivering 90,000 to 100,000 vehicles this fiscal year. As for the next year, it’s also likely that NIO will deliver even more vehicles since recently it reached a deal with its manufacturer Jianghuai Automobile Group to extend the manufacturing agreement up to 2024 and increase the annual capacity to up to 240,000 vehicles. As a result, investors should expect the growth of deliveries to continue in the following years.</p>\n<p>Another advantage of NIO is that all of its business is concentrated in China, which is the largest electric vehicle market in the world. Currently, China expects that 20% of all cars sold in the country will be EVs by 2025, while there are also&nbsp;predictions&nbsp;that by 2030 70% of new cars sold in the region will be electric. As a result, it’s safe to assume that the Chinese EV market will continue to grow at a double-digit rate at least until the end of the current decade. Therefore, as the penetration rate of electric vehicles on Chinese roads increases every year, NIO, as one of the most popular EV manufacturers in the country, has all the chances to continue to establish a stronger presence and increasing its foothold in the domestic market. This will inevitably lead to the creation of additional shareholder value in the long term, especially since thanks to the help of Chinese subsidies, its cars are becoming more affordable for consumers in comparison to Tesla, which is slowly losing&nbsp;ground&nbsp;in the region and is no longer the best-selling EV manufacturer in the region.</p>\n<p>On top of all of this, the potential trade war between China and the United States is also a positive thing for NIO, since it’s very likely that Beijing will put more regulatory pressure on American businesses such as Tesla, which sees China as the second-biggest market after the US. Tesla is already under a lot of&nbsp;scrutiny&nbsp;in the region and additional pressure from the authorities could pave the way for NIO and others to take an additional market share from the foreign competitor. In addition, since NIO doesn’t have a presence in the United States, the increased hostilities between China and the US are unlikely to hurt the company.</p>\n<p>Considering all of this, NIO has everything going for it to continue to dominate the Chinese EV market and expand its foothold there. The company’s solid Q2 results and positive Q3 guidance shows that the demand for its vehicles is out there so the momentum is unlikely to fade anytime soon. For that reason, we stick to our belief that as long as deliveries continue to increase at an aggressive rate, NIO’s stock will likely be appreciating and creating additional shareholder value in the long term.</p>\n<p>While recently its shares slightly declined due to the negative market sentiment regarding Chinese stocks, we believe that the decline was a market overreaction. It’s very unlikely that NIO will be strictly regulated by the Chinese government anytime soon, as it’s in the interest of Beijing to help NIO and others become more successful in order to reach its climate goals on time and become a carbon-neutral nation by 2060. Therefore, the recent depreciation of NIO shares created a good buying opportunity for new investors.</p>\n<p>One of the biggest upsides of NIO is that its gross profit continues to increase, while losses continue to narrow with every quarter. Thanks to this, the company has all the chances to break even and become&nbsp;profitable&nbsp;in 2023. On top of that, NIO has a solid&nbsp;balance sheet, as it had $7.26 billion in liquidity and only $1.52 billion in long-term debt at the end of Q2, which will help it to continue to fund its growth. In addition, the company is forecasted to generate $5.62 billion in revenues in FY21, and $9.39 billion in revenues in FY22, which represents a growth of nearly 70% Y/Y. Thanks to such an expected double-digit growth of its revenues, it’s safe to say that NIO is a good growth stock to own, especially since it has an upside of ~60% from the&nbsp;consensus&nbsp;street price of $61.83 per share. Not only NIO continues to improve its top and bottom-line performances quarter after quarter, but it’s also able to increase its Y/Y deliveries at a double-digit rate and is on track to deliver a record number of electric vehicles this year. On top of that, the launch of new models in the following years should also help the company to establish a greater presence in the ever-growing Chinese EV market. For that reason, we continue to own NIO’s shares and have no plans to unwind our position anytime soon.\nMore Upside Ahead\nFounded in 2014, NIO develops three different premium electric SUVs under the names ES6, ES8, and EC6, but next year the company also plans to release an electric sedan called ET7, which will come with a solid-state battery. Thanks to the successful performance since the beginning of the pandemic, NIO became one of the dominant Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, which helped its shares to significantly outperform the rest of the market in the last 12 months. As of today, we continue to believe that NIO’s stock is one of the most attractive Chinese-based EV plays on the market right now.\nChart: Seeking Alpha\nJust last week NIO reported successful earnings results forQ2. Its revenues for the period were $1.31 billion, up 127% Y/Y, while its gross profit of $243.8 million was up 402.7% Y/Y. In addition, its vehicle margin increased to 20.3% at the end of the period, up from 9.7% a year ago. At the same time, the company’s non-GAAP EPS of -$0.07 was above the estimates by $0.04, as its net loss narrowed to $90.9 million. On top of all of this, NIO has also reached its goal of delivering nearly 22,000 vehicles during the quarter, despite the ongoing chip shortage crisis, which affected and continues to affect every automaker in the world from the beginning of this year.\nThe positive thing about NIO is that just like Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA), the company started selling luxury electric vehicles first, but now it’s on its way to enter the mass market and create more affordable vehicles, which will lead to an even greater growth of the business. The company expects to launch three additional models in the next couple of years, one of which will be a new sedan ET7. On top of that, the company is also expected to continue to increase the number of cars sold in the following quarters and in Q3, it expects to deliver 23,000 to 25,000 vehicles, above the previous guidance of 21,000 to 22,000 vehicles. If that goal is reached, then NIO will be able to generate $1.38 billion to $1.49 billion in revenues during the quarter, which represents a growth of 97% Y/Y to 113% Y/Y. The completion of the quarterly goal will also help NIO to reach another goal of delivering 90,000 to 100,000 vehicles this fiscal year. As for the next year, it’s also likely that NIO will deliver even more vehicles since recently it reached a deal with its manufacturer Jianghuai Automobile Group to extend the manufacturing agreement up to 2024 and increase the annual capacity to up to 240,000 vehicles. As a result, investors should expect the growth of deliveries to continue in the following years.\nAnother advantage of NIO is that all of its business is concentrated in China, which is the largest electric vehicle market in the world. Currently, China expects that 20% of all cars sold in the country will be EVs by 2025, while there are also predictions that by 2030 70% of new cars sold in the region will be electric. As a result, it’s safe to assume that the Chinese EV market will continue to grow at a double-digit rate at least until the end of the current decade. Therefore, as the penetration rate of electric vehicles on Chinese roads increases every year, NIO, as one of the most popular EV manufacturers in the country, has all the chances to continue to establish a stronger presence and increasing its foothold in the domestic market. This will inevitably lead to the creation of additional shareholder value in the long term, especially since thanks to the help of Chinese subsidies, its cars are becoming more affordable for consumers in comparison to Tesla, which is slowly losing ground in the region and is no longer the best-selling EV manufacturer in the region.\nOn top of all of this, the potential trade war between China and the United States is also a positive thing for NIO, since it’s very likely that Beijing will put more regulatory pressure on American businesses such as Tesla, which sees China as the second-biggest market after the US. Tesla is already under a lot of scrutiny in the region and additional pressure from the authorities could pave the way for NIO and others to take an additional market share from the foreign competitor. In addition, since NIO doesn’t have a presence in the United States, the increased hostilities between China and the US are unlikely to hurt the company.\nConsidering all of this, NIO has everything going for it to continue to dominate the Chinese EV market and expand its foothold there. The company’s solid Q2 results and positive Q3 guidance shows that the demand for its vehicles is out there so the momentum is unlikely to fade anytime soon. For that reason, we stick to our belief that as long as deliveries continue to increase at an aggressive rate, NIO’s stock will likely be appreciating and creating additional shareholder value in the long term.\nWhile recently its shares slightly declined due to the negative market sentiment regarding Chinese stocks, we believe that the decline was a market overreaction. It’s very unlikely that NIO will be strictly regulated by the Chinese government anytime soon, as it’s in the interest of Beijing to help NIO and others become more successful in order to reach its climate goals on time and become a carbon-neutral nation by 2060. Therefore, the recent depreciation of NIO shares created a good buying opportunity for new investors.\nOne of the biggest upsides of NIO is that its gross profit continues to increase, while losses continue to narrow with every quarter. Thanks to this, the company has all the chances to break even and become profitable in 2023. On top of that, NIO has a solid balance sheet, as it had $7.26 billion in liquidity and only $1.52 billion in long-term debt at the end of Q2, which will help it to continue to fund its growth. In addition, the company is forecasted to generate $5.62 billion in revenues in FY21, and $9.39 billion in revenues in FY22, which represents a growth of nearly 70% Y/Y. Thanks to such an expected double-digit growth of its revenues, it’s safe to say that NIO is a good growth stock to own, especially since it has an upside of ~60% from the consensus street price of $61.83 per share. It has a reasonable 0.65% expense ratio.</p>\n<p>The fund is co-managed by Prabha Ram, who I recently caught up with. Raised in India, Ram came to the U.S. as a teaching assistant at the University of Maine, where she earned a master’s degree in computer science. She went on to receive an MBA at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Ram and three other portfolio managers have led this fund since 2016.</p>\n<p>Here are the five key takeaways, with examples of specific stocks.</p>\n<p><b>1. Own companies that can “land and expand” in big markets</b></p>\n<p>Even though we’ve been in the digital age for years, many small companies still do much of their business on paper. Bill.comBILLwants to change that. The company was founded by CEO René Lacerte, who in the late 1990s started the online payroll company PayCycle, which was acquired by Intuit.</p>\n<p>Bill.com helps small companies go digital in accounts payable and receivable payments. But that’s just the start. Once inside a company, Bill.com digitizes other areas like cash and expense account management.</p>\n<p>Bill.com “lands and expands” at clients, but it also uses their business partners to create a network of leads.</p>\n<p>“Every vendor is a network member, even if it is not a Bill.com customer,” says Ram. This network has about 2.5 million members. Bill.com also gets prospects from its partners, including Bank of AmericaBAC,JPMorgan ChaseJPMand American ExpressAXP.Sales grew 45% in the first quarter.</p>\n<p>Founder-run companies such as this one are worth considering because they often outperform.</p>\n<p><b>2. Seek out innovators</b></p>\n<p>Ram’s portfolio contains obvious innovators, including TeslaTSLA,Amazon.comAMZNand AlphabetGOOGL,her top three positions. Let’s look beyond technology — to beer.</p>\n<p>Back in the 1980s, Boston Beer founder Jim Koch began taking share from beer giants Anheuser-Busch InBevBUDand HeinekenHEINYby rolling out successful “craft” brews, starting with Samuel Adams. Koch helped invent the craft brew category, essentially taking the country back to pre-Prohibition days when the U.S. had hundreds of regional breweries making more flavorful beers for local tastes.</p>\n<p>Boston Beer stock did very well, but then it stalled during 2015-2017 as beer sales overall went flat. In response, Boston Beer helped put a new category on the map — with its Truly Hard Seltzer brand rolled out in 2106. It remains one of the leading hard seltzers.</p>\n<p>“We were drawn to the company because of its history of innovation,” says Ram, referring to her fund’s early position from the second quarter of 2016. “The stock was doing poorly because the beer market was flattening, but they were coming up with Truly Hard Seltzer. Truly was more successful than we anticipated. It created a new category.”</p>\n<p>This penchant for innovation at Boston Beer has helped keep Ram’s fund in the name. Other successful Boston Beer brands include Twisted Tea, Angry Orchard and Dogfish Head.</p>\n<p>A key takeaway here is that to find innovative companies, look for the ones led by people who have demonstrated a knack for innovation in the past. Innovative managers tend to keep on innovating. Boston Beer continually tests new seltzers, beers, hard ciders, distilled spirits and other drinks. Shareholders are betting they will come through again.</p>\n<p>They’ll need the help. Boston Beer shares fell 20% on July 23 because so many competitors entered the hard cider niche. Sales grew 33% but net income fell 1.6% as the company jacked up advertising costs to try to combat the competition. The company slashed estimates for the year on an expected slowdown in sales growth.</p>\n<p>But don’t count out this innovator yet.</p>\n<p>“We recently announced plans to develop new innovative beverages with&nbsp;Beam Suntory&nbsp;that we are planning to launch in early 2022,” Boston Beer’s Koch said. Beam Suntory&nbsp;sells Jim Beam whiskey and other brands of spirits. “We believe these new beverages will further demonstrate our ability to innovate and grow our business as drinker preferences evolve.”</p>\n<p><b>3. Look for companies that can create and dominate a niche</b></p>\n<p>For years as the gig economy emerged, the big credit card companies didn’t really care that much if the local yoga instructor could accept payments with a credit card. SquareSQrecognized this as an opportunity. So it launched its card payment device business in 2009. Since then, it has grown by taking on larger customers, and expanding into new lines of business in financial services such as cash management, debit cards loans and tax filing. Transaction-based revenue grew 27% in the first quarter, and subscription and services revenue soared 88%.</p>\n<p>This is a great example of a company that created a business niche. But it’s also a “land and expand” company because it grows by offering customers new services. Both qualities help companies maintain the competitive advantage Ram likes see in investments.</p>\n<p><b>4. Buy companies in the early stages of rapid growth</b></p>\n<p>One way to find these is to identify companies developing products that will transform an entire industry. Ram thinks that is the case with Alnylam PharmaceuticalsALNY.It’s developing novel therapies base on a technique called RNA interference (RNAi). Inside the body, messenger RNA (mRNA) encodes proteins we need, based on signals from RNA. Sometimes mRNA gets the signals crossed, and it encodes flawed proteins. This causes diseases.</p>\n<p>Alnylam has developed a way to tweak the RNAi pathway to silence the flawed signaling and block the creation of disease-causing proteins. So far, Alnylam has four approved RNAi-based medicines that treat rare hereditary diseases. The company has a dozen other therapies in clinical studies, including six in late-stage development.</p>\n<p>“This is a completely new area of therapeutics,” says Ram. “It is a platform of products that can treat a variety of conditions.”</p>\n<p><b>5. Hold stocks for the long term</b></p>\n<p>All of the names above are large positions in Ram’s fund, which tells me that Ram and her team think they have considerably more upside. If you buy any of them, though, remember you have to do so with a multi-year time horizon. That’s what Ram’s fund does. It has a low annual portfolio turnover of 27%. What's more, Applied's guidance turned out to be strong as well, fueled by the massive growth in semiconductor investments across the globe as chipmakers are scrambling to meet huge end-market demand.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/36e7c524b510f3ddf875d48fa2f3ac29\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"393\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p>\n<p>It's worth noting that Applied Materials stock is now trading at a cheaper valuation than it was before the quarterly report came out, thanks to the terrific earnings growth. Its price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is just 23, while the forward earnings multiple of 17 indicates that more bottom-line growth is in the cards. These multiples are lower than the <b>S&amp;P 500 Index</b>'s trailing P/E of 31 and forward P/E of 22.</p>\n<p>That means there's a golden opportunity for investors to add a rapidly growing company to their portfolios at an attractive valuation, and they shouldn't miss out. Let's look at some reasons.</p>\n<h2>Applied Materials is now growing at a blistering pace</h2>\n<p>A $1,000 investment in Applied Materials stock a decade ago would be worth almost $12,000 now:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/81e0104d17e81fcbfbe06af299b88f05\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>AMAT data by YCharts.</span></p>\n<p>However, as the chart above shows, the company's top and bottom lines haven't exactly grown at a blistering pace over the past 10 years. Its revenue just about doubled, while earnings growth hasn't been eye-popping either, considering the pace at which the broader market's bottom line has increased. Also, as the chart indicates, most of Applied Materials' gains arrived in the past year and a half, after it became evident that the company's offerings would remain in hot demand amid a global semiconductor shortage that has disrupted several industries.</p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, Applied Materials' revenue and earnings have been growing at a much faster pace when compared to its average annual growth in the past 10 years. The company delivered record quarterly revenue of $6.2 billion in Q3, up 41% year over year. The results crushed the expectations of analysts who'd been looking for $1.77 per share in earnings on $5.94 billion in revenue.</p>\n<p>Applied Materials' guidance was the icing on the cake. The company expects, at the midpoint of its guidance range, to earn $1.94 per share this quarter on revenue of $6.33 billion. Wall Street had set the bar lower; analysts were expecting just $1.81 in earnings per share on $6.04 billion in revenue. The midpoint of the guidance indicates that Applied is anticipating 35% year-over-year revenue growth this quarter, while non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings could increase 55%.</p>\n<p>The impressive guidance is a clue that Applied Materials has switched into a higher gear, and it's unlikely to step off the gas given the massive end-market opportunity at hand. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising to see its growth over the next decade significantly outpacing the rate at which it's grown in the past 10 years, helping the stock to fly higher once again.</p>\n<h2>Sustainable growth drivers can help the stock soar</h2>\n<p>Applied Materials supplies chip fabrication equipment, services, and software to semiconductor manufacturers. Its largest source of revenue is the semiconductor systems business, through which Applied develops, manufactures, and sells semiconductor fabrication equipment. This segment produced nearly 72% of the company's total revenue last quarter and recorded 53% year-over-year growth.</p>\n<p>Within the semiconductor systems business, the foundry/logic vertical occupied the largest share with 63% of total revenue, up from 55% in the year-ago quarter. The foundry business is built for long-term growth, as chipmakers across the globe are ramping up capacity. For instance, global semiconductor capital spending stood at an estimated $29.4 billion in 2010, according to <b>Gartner</b>. Last year, that number had ballooned to $106.9 billion.</p>\n<p>Gartner estimates that global semiconductor spending will rise to $141.9 billion this year. Spending on semiconductor equipment can keep moving higher in the coming years on the back of a huge jump in chip demand.</p>\n<p>Applied Materials points out that the semiconductor industry took 40 years to achieve its first $200 billion in revenue; from 2000 to 2017, the industry added the next $200 billion. An additional $200 billion of revenue is expected by 2024, over a shorter span of just seven years. What's more, the semiconductor industry's revenue is anticipated to increase a whopping $400 billion from 2025 to 2030, hitting $1 trillion at the end of the forecast period.</p>\n<p>Chipmakers will need to buy new equipment or upgrade their existing setups to cater to this massive increase in semiconductor demand, which will be driven by several verticals including automotive, networking, and industrial. Discussing \"PPACt\" (chip power efficiency, performance, area, cost, and time to market), Applied Materials CEO Gary Dickerson said on the Q3 earnings call that the company is on track to take advantage of these tailwinds and outperform the broader market:</p>\n<blockquote>\n As we look ahead, we are confident that the strength of longer-term secular trends will drive semiconductor and wafer fab equipment markets structurally higher. Its price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is just 23, while the forward earnings multiple of 17 indicates that more bottom-line growth is in the cards. These multiples are lower than the S&P 500 Index's trailing P/E of 31 and forward P/E of 22.\nThat means there's a golden opportunity for investors to add a rapidly growing company to their portfolios at an attractive valuation, and they shouldn't miss out. Not only NIO continues to improve its top and bottom-line performances quarter after quarter, but it’s also able to increase its Y/Y deliveries at a double-digit rate and is on track to deliver a record number of electric vehicles this year. On top of that, the launch of new models in the following years should also help the company to establish a greater presence in the ever-growing Chinese EV market. For that reason, we continue to own NIO’s shares and have no plans to unwind our position anytime soon.</p>\n<p><b>More Upside Ahead</b></p>\n<p>Founded in 2014, NIO develops three different premium electric SUVs under the names ES6, ES8, and EC6, but next year the company also plans to release an electric sedan called ET7, which will come with a solid-state battery. Thanks to the successful performance since the beginning of the pandemic, NIO became one of the dominant Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, which helped its shares to significantly outperform the rest of the market in the last 12 months. As of today, we continue to believe that NIO’s stock is one of the most attractive Chinese-based EV plays on the market right now.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1d218d050d6d6c3aff73b3015e2dd027\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"443\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Chart: Seeking Alpha</span></p>\n<p>Just last week NIO reported successful earnings results forQ2. Its revenues for the period were $1.31 billion, up 127% Y/Y, while its gross profit of $243.8 million was up 402.7% Y/Y. In addition, its vehicle margin increased to 20.3% at the end of the period, up from 9.7% a year ago. At the same time, the company’s non-GAAP EPS of -$0.07 was above the estimates by $0.04, as its net loss narrowed to $90.9 million. On top of all of this, NIO has also reached its goal of delivering nearly 22,000 vehicles during the quarter, despite the ongoing chip shortage crisis, which affected and continues to affect every automaker in the world from the beginning of this year.</p>\n<p>The positive thing about NIO is that just like Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA), the company started selling luxury electric vehicles first, but now it’s on its way to enter the mass market and create more affordable vehicles, which will lead to an even greater growth of the business. The company expects to launch three additional models in the next couple of years, one of which will be a new sedan ET7. On top of that, the company is also expected to continue to increase the number of cars sold in the following quarters and in Q3, it expects to deliver 23,000 to 25,000 vehicles, above the previous guidance of 21,000 to 22,000 vehicles. If that goal is reached, then NIO will be able to generate $1.38 billion to $1.49 billion in revenues during the quarter, which represents a growth of 97% Y/Y to 113% Y/Y. The completion of the quarterly goal will also help NIO to reach another goal of delivering 90,000 to 100,000 vehicles this fiscal year. As for the next year, it’s also likely that NIO will deliver even more vehicles since recently it reached a deal with its manufacturer Jianghuai Automobile Group to extend the manufacturing agreement up to 2024 and increase the annual capacity to up to 240,000 vehicles. As a result, investors should expect the growth of deliveries to continue in the following years.</p>\n<p>Another advantage of NIO is that all of its business is concentrated in China, which is the largest electric vehicle market in the world. Currently, China expects that 20% of all cars sold in the country will be EVs by 2025, while there are also&nbsp;predictions&nbsp;that by 2030 70% of new cars sold in the region will be electric. As a result, it’s safe to assume that the Chinese EV market will continue to grow at a double-digit rate at least until the end of the current decade. Therefore, as the penetration rate of electric vehicles on Chinese roads increases every year, NIO, as one of the most popular EV manufacturers in the country, has all the chances to continue to establish a stronger presence and increasing its foothold in the domestic market. This will inevitably lead to the creation of additional shareholder value in the long term, especially since thanks to the help of Chinese subsidies, its cars are becoming more affordable for consumers in comparison to Tesla, which is slowly losing&nbsp;ground&nbsp;in the region and is no longer the best-selling EV manufacturer in the region.</p>\n<p>On top of all of this, the potential trade war between China and the United States is also a positive thing for NIO, since it’s very likely that Beijing will put more regulatory pressure on American businesses such as Tesla, which sees China as the second-biggest market after the US. Tesla is already under a lot of&nbsp;scrutiny&nbsp;in the region and additional pressure from the authorities could pave the way for NIO and others to take an additional market share from the foreign competitor. In addition, since NIO doesn’t have a presence in the United States, the increased hostilities between China and the US are unlikely to hurt the company.</p>\n<p>Considering all of this, NIO has everything going for it to continue to dominate the Chinese EV market and expand its foothold there. The company’s solid Q2 results and positive Q3 guidance shows that the demand for its vehicles is out there so the momentum is unlikely to fade anytime soon. For that reason, we stick to our belief that as long as deliveries continue to increase at an aggressive rate, NIO’s stock will likely be appreciating and creating additional shareholder value in the long term.</p>\n<p>While recently its shares slightly declined due to the negative market sentiment regarding Chinese stocks, we believe that the decline was a market overreaction. It’s very unlikely that NIO will be strictly regulated by the Chinese government anytime soon, as it’s in the interest of Beijing to help NIO and others become more successful in order to reach its climate goals on time and become a carbon-neutral nation by 2060. Therefore, the recent depreciation of NIO shares created a good buying opportunity for new investors.</p>\n<p>One of the biggest upsides of NIO is that its gross profit continues to increase, while losses continue to narrow with every quarter. Thanks to this, the company has all the chances to break even and become&nbsp;profitable&nbsp;in 2023. On top of that, NIO has a solid&nbsp;balance sheet, as it had $7.26 billion in liquidity and only $1.52 billion in long-term debt at the end of Q2, which will help it to continue to fund its growth. In addition, the company is forecasted to generate $5.62 billion in revenues in FY21, and $9.39 billion in revenues in FY22, which represents a growth of nearly 70% Y/Y. Thanks to such an expected double-digit growth of its revenues, it’s safe to say that NIO is a good growth stock to own, especially since it has an upside of ~60% from the&nbsp;consensus&nbsp;street price of $61.83 per share. Not only NIO continues to improve its top and bottom-line performances quarter after quarter, but it’s also able to increase its Y/Y deliveries at a double-digit rate and is on track to deliver a record number of electric vehicles this year. On top of that, the launch of new models in the following years should also help the company to establish a greater presence in the ever-growing Chinese EV market. For that reason, we continue to own NIO’s shares and have no plans to unwind our position anytime soon.\nMore Upside Ahead\nFounded in 2014, NIO develops three different premium electric SUVs under the names ES6, ES8, and EC6, but next year the company also plans to release an electric sedan called ET7, which will come with a solid-state battery. Thanks to the successful performance since the beginning of the pandemic, NIO became one of the dominant Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, which helped its shares to significantly outperform the rest of the market in the last 12 months. As of today, we continue to believe that NIO’s stock is one of the most attractive Chinese-based EV plays on the market right now.\nChart: Seeking Alpha\nJust last week NIO reported successful earnings results forQ2. Its revenues for the period were $1.31 billion, up 127% Y/Y, while its gross profit of $243.8 million was up 402.7% Y/Y. In addition, its vehicle margin increased to 20.3% at the end of the period, up from 9.7% a year ago. At the same time, the company’s non-GAAP EPS of -$0.07 was above the estimates by $0.04, as its net loss narrowed to $90.9 million. On top of all of this, NIO has also reached its goal of delivering nearly 22,000 vehicles during the quarter, despite the ongoing chip shortage crisis, which affected and continues to affect every automaker in the world from the beginning of this year.\nThe positive thing about NIO is that just like Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA), the company started selling luxury electric vehicles first, but now it’s on its way to enter the mass market and create more affordable vehicles, which will lead to an even greater growth of the business. The company expects to launch three additional models in the next couple of years, one of which will be a new sedan ET7. On top of that, the company is also expected to continue to increase the number of cars sold in the following quarters and in Q3, it expects to deliver 23,000 to 25,000 vehicles, above the previous guidance of 21,000 to 22,000 vehicles. If that goal is reached, then NIO will be able to generate $1.38 billion to $1.49 billion in revenues during the quarter, which represents a growth of 97% Y/Y to 113% Y/Y. The completion of the quarterly goal will also help NIO to reach another goal of delivering 90,000 to 100,000 vehicles this fiscal year. As for the next year, it’s also likely that NIO will deliver even more vehicles since recently it reached a deal with its manufacturer Jianghuai Automobile Group to extend the manufacturing agreement up to 2024 and increase the annual capacity to up to 240,000 vehicles. As a result, investors should expect the growth of deliveries to continue in the following years.\nAnother advantage of NIO is that all of its business is concentrated in China, which is the largest electric vehicle market in the world. Currently, China expects that 20% of all cars sold in the country will be EVs by 2025, while there are also predictions that by 2030 70% of new cars sold in the region will be electric. As a result, it’s safe to assume that the Chinese EV market will continue to grow at a double-digit rate at least until the end of the current decade. Therefore, as the penetration rate of electric vehicles on Chinese roads increases every year, NIO, as one of the most popular EV manufacturers in the country, has all the chances to continue to establish a stronger presence and increasing its foothold in the domestic market. This will inevitably lead to the creation of additional shareholder value in the long term, especially since thanks to the help of Chinese subsidies, its cars are becoming more affordable for consumers in comparison to Tesla, which is slowly losing ground in the region and is no longer the best-selling EV manufacturer in the region.\nOn top of all of this, the potential trade war between China and the United States is also a positive thing for NIO, since it’s very likely that Beijing will put more regulatory pressure on American businesses such as Tesla, which sees China as the second-biggest market after the US. Tesla is already under a lot of scrutiny in the region and additional pressure from the authorities could pave the way for NIO and others to take an additional market share from the foreign competitor. In addition, since NIO doesn’t have a presence in the United States, the increased hostilities between China and the US are unlikely to hurt the company.\nConsidering all of this, NIO has everything going for it to continue to dominate the Chinese EV market and expand its foothold there. The company’s solid Q2 results and positive Q3 guidance shows that the demand for its vehicles is out there so the momentum is unlikely to fade anytime soon. For that reason, we stick to our belief that as long as deliveries continue to increase at an aggressive rate, NIO’s stock will likely be appreciating and creating additional shareholder value in the long term.\nWhile recently its shares slightly declined due to the negative market sentiment regarding Chinese stocks, we believe that the decline was a market overreaction. It’s very unlikely that NIO will be strictly regulated by the Chinese government anytime soon, as it’s in the interest of Beijing to help NIO and others become more successful in order to reach its climate goals on time and become a carbon-neutral nation by 2060. Therefore, the recent depreciation of NIO shares created a good buying opportunity for new investors.\nOne of the biggest upsides of NIO is that its gross profit continues to increase, while losses continue to narrow with every quarter. Thanks to this, the company has all the chances to break even and become profitable in 2023. On top of that, NIO has a solid balance sheet, as it had $7.26 billion in liquidity and only $1.52 billion in long-term debt at the end of Q2, which will help it to continue to fund its growth. In addition, the company is forecasted to generate $5.62 billion in revenues in FY21, and $9.39 billion in revenues in FY22, which represents a growth of nearly 70% Y/Y. Thanks to such an expected double-digit growth of its revenues, it’s safe to say that NIO is a good growth stock to own, especially since it has an upside of ~60% from the consensus street price of $61.83 per share. But importantly, Facebook is the most exposed to Apple’s privacy changes, and it looks like it is starting to have an impact to the outlook beginning in 3Q,” said Ygal Arounian, an analyst at Wedbush Securities.</p>\n<p>Brian Wieser, GroupM’s global president of business intelligence, said all social media companies would see slower growth in the second half of the year and that it would take more concrete warnings about activity in June and July for anyone to anticipate a “meaningful deceleration.”</p>\n<p>Facebook’s total revenue, which primarily consists of ad sales, rose about 56% to $29.08 billion in the second quarter from $18.69 billion a year earlier, beating analysts’ estimates, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.</p>\n<p>Its revenue from advertising rose 56% to $28.58 billion in the second quarter ended June 30, Facebook said. You can kind of think of this as an embodied internet that you're inside of rather than just looking at.\"</p>\n<p>Facebook (FB) is not alone. Increasingly, tech companies are hailing the importance of building a \"metaverse\" as a technological bridge from smartphones and mobile devices to virtual worlds where large numbers of people congregate to play, work and socialize. Microsoft Corp. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MSFT\">$(MSFT)$</a> CEO Satya Nadella, even spoke of an \"enterprise metaverse\" during his company's earnings call last week.</p>\n<p>Since \"Snow Crash,\" about the inevitability of intertwined physical and virtual worlds to form a fully fledged economy with unprecedented interoperability.</p>\n<p>It all sounds rather futuristic and utopian, but Zuckerberg's vision of a maximalist Facebook is equally rooted in a deft corporate play to sidestep Apple Inc.'s onerous commission fees for app developers.</p>\n<p>Facebook, like other app developers such as Epic Games Inc. and Roblox Inc., see the metaverse as a strategic lever that could bypass Apple Store fees and present an \"existential threat,\" said Benjamin Bertram Goldman, head of films at design company InVision, where he runs a documentary film unit that explores the future of design and technology.</p>\n<p>\"Metaverse forces the impracticality of Apple's position into the spotlight,\" Goldman told MarketWatch. \"The creation of a virtual shopping world suddenly makes a company demanding a 30% commission fee to be viewed as absurd. It ascribes to an end state that is incompatible with Apple.\"</p>\n<p>During Epic's historic antitrust courtroom war with Apple earlier this year, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney invoked the \"metaverse\" and Stephenson's novel. The metaverse is \"a real-time, computer-powered 3-D entertainment and social medium in which real people would go into a 3-D simulation together and have experiences of all sorts,\" he explained in testimony. Sweeney pointedly chose \"metaverse\" in his testimony as a metaphor for \"Fortnite,\" the multiplayer game Apple banned from its iOS App Store last year.</p>\n<p>Zuckerberg has made no secret of his desire for more e-commerce-related business within Facebook apps. He just doesn't want to help Apple -- its privacy-baiting nemesis -- by paying fees of up to 30% on transactions within its app.</p>\n<p>A metaverse could also allow other tech companies to take advantage of their augmented- and virtual-reality assets before Apple launches whatever comes from its longtime ambitions in augmented reality .</p>\n<p>\"It's a logical progression for Facebook to invest meaningfully in technology that deepens user connection and creates more ubiquity between our physical and digital worlds,\" Daniel Newman, principal analyst at Futurum, told MarketWatch. \"VR, for instance, has advanced but hasn't fully immersed us due to equipment and cost constraints, plus software is intensive.\"</p>\n<p>Newman posited that Facebook and Microsoft in particular have accumulated vast AR and VR assets to build virtual platforms with acquisitions of properties such as Oculus (Facebook) and AltspaceVR (Microsoft) and developing mixed-reality smart glasses internally. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg sounded serious last week about its potential to transform the company he co-founded -- and the internet itself.\n\"I wanted to discuss this now so that you can see the future that we're working toward and how our major initiatives across the company are going to map to that,\" Zuckerberg said on a conference call with analysts following Facebook's (FB)second-quarter earnings report . \"What is the metaverse? It's a virtual environment where you can be present with people in digital spaces. You can kind of think of this as an embodied internet that you're inside of rather than just looking at.\"\nFacebook (FB) is not alone. Increasingly, tech companies are hailing the importance of building a \"metaverse\" as a technological bridge from smartphones and mobile devices to virtual worlds where large numbers of people congregate to play, work and socialize. Microsoft Corp. $(MSFT)$ CEO Satya Nadella, even spoke of an \"enterprise metaverse\" during his company's earnings call last week.\nSince \"Snow Crash,\" about the inevitability of intertwined physical and virtual worlds to form a fully fledged economy with unprecedented interoperability.\nIt all sounds rather futuristic and utopian, but Zuckerberg's vision of a maximalist Facebook is equally rooted in a deft corporate play to sidestep Apple Inc.'s onerous commission fees for app developers.\nFacebook, like other app developers such as Epic Games Inc. and Roblox Inc., see the metaverse as a strategic lever that could bypass Apple Store fees and present an \"existential threat,\" said Benjamin Bertram Goldman, head of films at design company InVision, where he runs a documentary film unit that explores the future of design and technology.\n\"Metaverse forces the impracticality of Apple's position into the spotlight,\" Goldman told MarketWatch. \"The creation of a virtual shopping world suddenly makes a company demanding a 30% commission fee to be viewed as absurd.
