This end-to-end approach streamlines transactions, removing the complexities created by third-party lenders and closing service providers.</p>\n<p>Zillow also buys homes directly through its Zillow Offers business, giving sellers the certainty of an all-cash offer and the convenience of never having to list their homes. More importantly, because the company draws more viewers to its listings, Zillow can acquire customers at a lower cost than its rivals.</p>\n<p>Likewise, its foundational Internet, Media, and Technology (IMT) business -- which comprises ad revenue from real estate agents, rental properties, and home builders -- is profitable. In fact, Zillow generated more gross profit in 2020 than any other tech company in the real estate space. Of course, homes aren't cheap, and this business requires sizable upfront investments that erode gross profit.</p>\n<p>However, management is moving up the learning curve. Zillow sold 5,337 homes in 2020, up 24% from the prior year. More importantly, the company reported a 9% gross margin in its Homes business in Q1 2021, up from 5% in Q1 2020. Investors should look for Zillow to maintain that momentum.</p>\n<h2>A bright future</h2>\n<p>Since Q1 2001, the median price for houses sold in the U.S. has climbed from $169,800 to $374,900. Put another way, home prices tend to rise about 4% annually. To add to that, millennials represent the largest generation in the country, and as they age into their homebuying years Zillow believes the number of U.S. households will rise 5% by 2025.</p>\n<p>In other words, the residential real estate market should see rising prices and increased demand in the years ahead, meaning Zillow's market opportunity should only get bigger.</p>\n<p>More importantly, I believe the future of real estate is more streamlined and digital, and Zillow's business model plays into that trend. Sales from regulatory credits—a source of revenue seen as less sustainable than sales of vehicles—-fell, but operating profits rose to record highs because of strong profitability in the automotive division.</p>\n<p>Tesla generates the credits by making more than its fair share of zero- emission cars and sells them to manufacturers that still rely on internal-combustion engines. Pessimists on the stock believe that source of income will dwindle over time.</p>\n<p>The stock, however, was down 1.5% in early trading Tuesday. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average,for comparison, had fallen 0.6% and 0.4%, respectively.</p>\n<p>It is a muted reaction to a good quarter, typical of the way stocks of mature businesses behave. Tesla stock moved more than 10% in response to three of the four 2019 quarterly reports. But it rose or fell an average of about 2.5% in response to the 2020 earnings reports.</p>\n<p>The typical 2020 move was a fall in the price in response to news of better-than-expected results. The same thing happened after the release of results for the first quarter of 2021.</p>\n<p>That is another sign of maturity. A small drop in response to better-than-expected results is the typical outcome for stocks. Investors always expect companies to exceed analyst projections, and when they get that result, they “sell the news.”</p>\n<p>The reaction among Wall Street analysts to the latest results is yet another sign of maturity. Mizuho analyst Vijay Rakesh raised his target for Tesla’s stock price by $5 to $825 following the news, for a bump of less than 1%.</p>\n<p>Back in January, RBC analyst Joe Spak raised his target price to $700 a share from $339 after changing how he thought about Tesla’s business. That was a huge target-price change from a large broker.</p>\n<p>Smaller changes in price targets can indicate a business is becoming more stable, and that analysts believe they have a grip on what is happening. That reduces the need for them to dramatically overhaul their views in response to events.</p>\n<p>Overall, the average analyst target price is up about $18, or 3%, in reaction to Monday’s results to about $644 a share. Tesla shares are trading about 1% or 2% above the average analyst target price.</p>\n<p>Target prices generally reflect where analysts think a stock should trade to earn a fair return out into the future. The average target price on stocks in the S&P 500 implies a gain of 7%.</p>\n<p>Even the fact that Tesla is trading around its average analyst target price is a sign of maturity. A year ago, the average target price for Tesla stock was about $225, while the price was above $300.</p>\n<p>Shareholders and bulls on the stock might like a bigger response from the stock when earnings come in strong, but the days of 20% moves, up or down, might be gone for Tesla. Sales from regulatory credits—a source of revenue seen as less sustainable than sales of vehicles—-fell, but operating profits rose to record highs because of strong profitability in the automotive division.\nTesla generates the credits by making more than its fair share of zero- emission cars and sells them to manufacturers that still rely on internal-combustion engines. Pessimists on the stock believe that source of income will dwindle over time.\nThe stock, however, was down 1.5% in early trading Tuesday. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average,for comparison, had fallen 0.6% and 0.4%, respectively.\nIt is a muted reaction to a good quarter, typical of the way stocks of mature businesses behave. Tesla stock moved more than 10% in response to three of the four 2019 quarterly reports. But it rose or fell an average of about 2.5% in response to the 2020 earnings reports.\nThe typical 2020 move was a fall in the price in response to news of better-than-expected results. The same thing happened after the release of results for the first quarter of 2021.\nThat is another sign of maturity. A small drop in response to better-than-expected results is the typical outcome for stocks. Investors always expect companies to exceed analyst projections, and when they get that result, they “sell the news.”\nThe reaction among Wall Street analysts to the latest results is yet another sign of maturity. Mizuho analyst Vijay Rakesh raised his target for Tesla’s stock price by $5 to $825 following the news, for a bump of less than 1%.\nBack in January, RBC analyst Joe Spak raised his target price to $700 a share from $339 after changing how he thought about Tesla’s business. That was a huge target-price change from a large broker.\nSmaller changes in price targets can indicate a business is becoming more stable, and that analysts believe they have a grip on what is happening. That reduces the need for them to dramatically overhaul their views in response to events.\nOverall, the average analyst target price is up about $18, or 3%, in reaction to Monday’s results to about $644 a share. Tesla shares are trading about 1% or 2% above the average analyst target price.\nTarget prices generally reflect where analysts think a stock should trade to earn a fair return out into the future. The average target price on stocks in the S&P 500 implies a gain of 7%.\nEven the fact that Tesla is trading around its average analyst target price is a sign of maturity. In fact, CEO Elon Musk has often said this would be the company's primary long-term advantage, and he now has data to back that claim: Tesla posted an industry-leading operating margin of 6.3% in 2020.</p>\n<p>How did that happen? Last year, Tesla ramped production of the Model 3 and started producing the Model Y at Gigafactory Shanghai. This helped expand and localize its China business, offering a cost-efficient alternative to importing vehicles. At the same time, the company started making the Model Y at its factory in Fremont, California, further boosting capacity.</p>\n<p>In both cases, Tesla's highly automated, scalable approach to manufacturing is paying off. The Model Y was immediately profitable, marking the first time in the company's history that a new product achieved profitability in its first quarter of production. Investors should look for this trend to continue.</p>\n<p>However, while Tesla's performance in 2020 was impressive, the company's future looks even brighter. Tesla recently unveiled its new 4680 battery cell, an innovative design that will slash production costs by 56%, increase EV range by 54%, and cut capital expenditure by 69%.</p>\n<p>During the most recent earnings call, Musk said Tesla is roughly 12 to 18 months away from \"volume production of the 4680.\" But on the bright side, he believes this technology will allow Tesla to build a fully autonomous $25,000 EV in the next three years.</p>\n<h2>Tesla's future</h2>\n<p>If Tesla does indeed build an affordable self-driving EV in the next three years, it would expand the company's market opportunity dramatically. In fact, Musk has already had \"preliminary discussions about licensing autopilot.\" In either case, this would transform Tesla's business, replacing its dependence on cyclical hardware sales (i.e., EVs) with highly recurring revenue in the form of ride fares or software subscription fees.</p>\n<p>Of course, before rushing to buy the stock, investors should consider Tesla's valuation. Shares currently trade at an absurd 19.8 times sales, while automakers like <b>General Motors</b> trade at a much more reasonable 0.7 times sales.</p>\n<p>However, a decade from now, that valuation may not look so crazy if Tesla does disrupt the mobility industry. Articles and news calling for the 'crash of the decade' have been condemned as fear-mongering with little substance to them. After all, technology stocks kept on rising, and those who listened missed out on impressive gains. Now, generally speaking, neither have I been too worried about valuations in the best, as fundamentals towards Technology in our society are simply too strong.</p>\n<p>However, a lot has changed over the course of the pandemic, which has led me to rethink my perspective. As the global pandemic shut down economies around the world and caused substantial economic contraction, federal banks counteracted by injecting trillions of dollars into the economy in the form of stimulus checks, grants, loans, etc. As a result, fresh liquidity immediately reflected itself in stocks and other market instruments.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c688f97bd5e513daa2e0c76d5ace6a1c\" tg-width=\"1845\" tg-height=\"651\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source: Bloomberg</span></p>\n<p>Throughout this article, I want to demonstrate a few graphs to strengthen my argument, with the chart above being the first one. The Nasdaq 100 is perhaps the most common index to track the technology market, although it only includes profitable and large-cap Tech stocks. On average, the index currently holds a Price to Sales ratio of 5.7x, levels that the Index last saw in early 2001 after the dot.com bubble began to bust.</p>\n<p>It is important to note that at the height of the bubble, the ratio stood at 7.5x, around 30% higher than it is right now. Still, the median valuation has been trailing significantly lower, at around 3.5x over the last 20 years. Of course, it can be argued that Technology deserves a higher valuation these days due to the increased use of Technology and perhaps higher growth rates. However, should Technology valuations be nearly 100% higher than just 5 years ago, in 2016, where Technology integration was pretty much at the same level as today?</p>\n<p>Profitability</p>\n<p>In recent years, unprofitable but growing companies have been favored over mature and profitable companies. Usually, rotations from Growth to Value or the other way around occur every 2-5 years, which is totally unsurprising. Historically, in terms of performance, there has been no significant difference in terms of returns on a risk-adjusted basis - it really does depend on the time period of investing. That said, in the last 5 years, growth outperformed value by a wide margin - by 105% to be exact. I derived this from the 5-year performance chart of Vanguard's Growth ETF vs. Vanguard's Value ETF. This compares with an expected anomaly of 5% annually or a 28% expected anomaly for a 5-year time period.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/02ae7e7ebc11fdc907d363cb5da38576\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"427\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source: Leuthold Group</span></p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, the number and market value of unprofitable companies has skyrocketed throughout the last couple of years. Here, the total number of unprofitable firms has skyrocketed to over 200, while their combined value handily beats 2000 levels, reaching nearly $2.5 trillion (3 times higher than in 2000). Of course, there is more money in circulation today, so when accounting for the dollar's real value, they are at comparable levels. Again, either way you twist it, there is a significant anomaly in the value of unprofitable companies in the stock market.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5804bc535329d20e013417a7e3f95614\" tg-width=\"500\" tg-height=\"357\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source: FT</span></p>\n<p>As a result, startups have utilized the opportunity to raise as much money as possible by going public. In total, nearly 900 companies in the U.S. have gone public in 2021, raising over $202 billion collectively. Before, the previous record was set in 2000, when around 600 companies rang the bell. What's even more frightening is the fact that a large portion of IPOs went public through special-purpose acquisition companies (SPACs). Many of these companies were acquired early on, with the only objective to go public as soon as possible. Here, various blank-check companies generate little or no revenues and face a rockier path to raising money through traditional IPOs.</p>\n<p>Today's Bubble</p>\n<p>Frankly, today's bubble is fundamentally different from the 2000 bubble, although there are striking similarities. Arguably, the dot.com bubble revolved purely around Internet stocks. Today, the bubble is much broader, ranging from old written-off industries to Consumer Tech, being concentrated on Cybersecurity. This makes sense, considering Cybersecurity is a quickly evolving industry with potentially billions of earnings for future winners in the space. The same applies to E-commerce, Fintech, Cloud Computing, Gene Editing, and other major future industries.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/68b42d04a15d16c506a4abf4feb58df0\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"518\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>This brings me to my next chart: High-flying stars of the early Internet era traded at similar multiples to cloud computing stars of today (when adjusted for monetary changes). However, early market leaders tend to lose competitive advantages in rising industries, in what someresearchersrefer to as \"First to Market First to Fail.\" Here, early entrants typically bury the greatest market and technological uncertainties.</p>\n<p>In other words, no one knows yet how our new industries will look like and how consumer trends will evolve. For instance, Facebook(NASDAQ:FB)was the 10th social networking company, Google(NASDAQ:GOOG)(NASDAQ:GOOGL)the 12th search engine, etc. Thus, today's most promising companies are unlikely to be the most promising companies 10 years from now. It is therefore questionable if current valuations can be supported in the long term.</p>\n<p>This is where I want to introduce Cisco's(NASDAQ:CSCO)example from 1999. However, valuation growth exceeded business growth for many high-growth companies, making various stocks appear increasingly overvalued. While higher valuations can be supported by the acceleration of Technology in the future, striking similarities of the Tech bubble in 2000 make me increasingly cautious of today's market environment.</p>\n<p>Bubble or not, many graphs point to a significant anomaly in valuations, and it will be difficult for companies to justify these sorts of valuations in the long term. More importantly, a heating economy with rising inflation will pressure the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates to prevent an economic contraction.</p>\n<p>Nonetheless, investors can protect themselves by rotating back into stable value stocks or Big Tech companies that have underperformed on a relative basis. The issue with every insurance is that you are only being paid in the case of a crash, quite literally. After all, valuations of high-growth stocks could continue rising and those not invested miss out on potential gains. Another viable option could be to rotate back into cash, but the same prior issue applies here. Even those who decide to short stocks have to be careful since an upside ceiling doesn't exist in the market.</p>\n<p>This is the point where I would like to address the risks of my thesis: First, inflation may stabilize quicker than expected, which would push a potential interest rate hike back to 2024 or later. In this case, money will continue to be cheap, which will support higher valuations and the growth market in general. Secondly, companies can scale somewhat faster today, making a historical valuation comparison to early years less relevant. After all, technology stocks kept on rising, and those who listened missed out on impressive gains. Now, generally speaking, neither have I been too worried about valuations in the best, as fundamentals towards Technology in our society are simply too strong.\nHowever, a lot has changed over the course of the pandemic, which has led me to rethink my perspective. As the global pandemic shut down economies around the world and caused substantial economic contraction, federal banks counteracted by injecting trillions of dollars into the economy in the form of stimulus checks, grants, loans, etc. As a result, fresh liquidity immediately reflected itself in stocks and other market instruments.\nSource: Bloomberg\nThroughout this article, I want to demonstrate a few graphs to strengthen my argument, with the chart above being the first one. The Nasdaq 100 is perhaps the most common index to track the technology market, although it only includes profitable and large-cap Tech stocks. On average, the index currently holds a Price to Sales ratio of 5.7x, levels that the Index last saw in early 2001 after the dot.com bubble began to bust.\nIt is important to note that at the height of the bubble, the ratio stood at 7.5x, around 30% higher than it is right now. Still, the median valuation has been trailing significantly lower, at around 3.5x over the last 20 years. Of course, it can be argued that Technology deserves a higher valuation these days due to the increased use of Technology and perhaps higher growth rates. However, should Technology valuations be nearly 100% higher than just 5 years ago, in 2016, where Technology integration was pretty much at the same level as today?\nProfitability\nIn recent years, unprofitable but growing companies have been favored over mature and profitable companies. Usually, rotations from Growth to Value or the other way around occur every 2-5 years, which is totally unsurprising. Historically, in terms of performance, there has been no significant difference in terms of returns on a risk-adjusted basis - it really does depend on the time period of investing. That said, in the last 5 years, growth outperformed value by a wide margin - by 105% to be exact. I derived this from the 5-year performance chart of Vanguard's Growth ETF vs. Vanguard's Value ETF. Here, the total number of unprofitable firms has skyrocketed to over 200, while their combined value handily beats 2000 levels, reaching nearly $2.5 trillion (3 times higher than in 2000). Of course, there is more money in circulation today, so when accounting for the dollar's real value, they are at comparable levels. In total, nearly 900 companies in the U.S. have gone public in 2021, raising over $202 billion collectively. Before, the previous record was set in 2000, when around 600 companies rang the bell. What's even more frightening is the fact that a large portion of IPOs went public through special-purpose acquisition companies (SPACs). Many of these companies were acquired early on, with the only objective to go public as soon as possible. Last year, Tesla ramped production of the Model 3 and started producing the Model Y at Gigafactory Shanghai. This helped expand and localize its China business, offering a cost-efficient alternative to importing vehicles. At the same time, the company started making the Model Y at its factory in Fremont, California, further boosting capacity.</p>\n<p>In both cases, Tesla's highly automated, scalable approach to manufacturing is paying off. The Model Y was immediately profitable, marking the first time in the company's history that a new product achieved profitability in its first quarter of production. Investors should look for this trend to continue.</p>\n<p>However, while Tesla's performance in 2020 was impressive, the company's future looks even brighter. Articles and news calling for the 'crash of the decade' have been condemned as fear-mongering with little substance to them. After all, technology stocks kept on rising, and those who listened missed out on impressive gains. Now, generally speaking, neither have I been too worried about valuations in the best, as fundamentals towards Technology in our society are simply too strong.</p>\n<p>However, a lot has changed over the course of the pandemic, which has led me to rethink my perspective. As the global pandemic shut down economies around the world and caused substantial economic contraction, federal banks counteracted by injecting trillions of dollars into the economy in the form of stimulus checks, grants, loans, etc. As a result, fresh liquidity immediately reflected itself in stocks and other market instruments.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c688f97bd5e513daa2e0c76d5ace6a1c\" tg-width=\"1845\" tg-height=\"651\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source: Bloomberg</span></p>\n<p>Throughout this article, I want to demonstrate a few graphs to strengthen my argument, with the chart above being the first one. The Nasdaq 100 is perhaps the most common index to track the technology market, although it only includes profitable and large-cap Tech stocks. On average, the index currently holds a Price to Sales ratio of 5.7x, levels that the Index last saw in early 2001 after the dot.com bubble began to bust.</p>\n<p>It is important to note that at the height of the bubble, the ratio stood at 7.5x, around 30% higher than it is right now. Still, the median valuation has been trailing significantly lower, at around 3.5x over the last 20 years. Of course, it can be argued that Technology deserves a higher valuation these days due to the increased use of Technology and perhaps higher growth rates. However, should Technology valuations be nearly 100% higher than just 5 years ago, in 2016, where Technology integration was pretty much at the same level as today?</p>\n<p>Profitability</p>\n<p>In recent years, unprofitable but growing companies have been favored over mature and profitable companies. Usually, rotations from Growth to Value or the other way around occur every 2-5 years, which is totally unsurprising. Historically, in terms of performance, there has been no significant difference in terms of returns on a risk-adjusted basis - it really does depend on the time period of investing. That said, in the last 5 years, growth outperformed value by a wide margin - by 105% to be exact. I derived this from the 5-year performance chart of Vanguard's Growth ETF vs. Vanguard's Value ETF. This compares with an expected anomaly of 5% annually or a 28% expected anomaly for a 5-year time period.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/02ae7e7ebc11fdc907d363cb5da38576\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"427\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source: Leuthold Group</span></p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, the number and market value of unprofitable companies has skyrocketed throughout the last couple of years. Here, the total number of unprofitable firms has skyrocketed to over 200, while their combined value handily beats 2000 levels, reaching nearly $2.5 trillion (3 times higher than in 2000). Of course, there is more money in circulation today, so when accounting for the dollar's real value, they are at comparable levels. Again, either way you twist it, there is a significant anomaly in the value of unprofitable companies in the stock market.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5804bc535329d20e013417a7e3f95614\" tg-width=\"500\" tg-height=\"357\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source: FT</span></p>\n<p>As a result, startups have utilized the opportunity to raise as much money as possible by going public. In total, nearly 900 companies in the U.S. have gone public in 2021, raising over $202 billion collectively. Before, the previous record was set in 2000, when around 600 companies rang the bell. What's even more frightening is the fact that a large portion of IPOs went public through special-purpose acquisition companies (SPACs). Many of these companies were acquired early on, with the only objective to go public as soon as possible. These are historical valuation levels and dwarf the valuation expansions of Microsoft and Alphabet, which are supported by growing profitability over the years. However, an overall drop in the market will lead to short-term weakness in every Technology stock, undervalued or not. Nevertheless, stocks that have underperformed in the rally over the last five years are more likely to outperform during a downturn. Moreover, large Tech companies are less sensitive to higher inflation as they will earn higher interest on their cash reserves.</p>\n<p>So What?</p>\n<p>The stock market is always driven by two contradicting emotions: Fear and Optimism. Over the last couple of years, optimism has clearly dominated the Growth/Technology market, yielding impressive returns and widely outperforming stable but profitable companies. However, valuation growth exceeded business growth for many high-growth companies, making various stocks appear increasingly overvalued. While higher valuations can be supported by the acceleration of Technology in the future, striking similarities of the Tech bubble in 2000 make me increasingly cautious of today's market environment.</p>\n<p>Bubble or not, many graphs point to a significant anomaly in valuations, and it will be difficult for companies to justify these sorts of valuations in the long term. More importantly, a heating economy with rising inflation will pressure the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates to prevent an economic contraction.</p>\n<p>Nonetheless, investors can protect themselves by rotating back into stable value stocks or Big Tech companies that have underperformed on a relative basis. The issue with every insurance is that you are only being paid in the case of a crash, quite literally. After all, valuations of high-growth stocks could continue rising and those not invested miss out on potential gains. Another viable option could be to rotate back into cash, but the same prior issue applies here. Even those who decide to short stocks have to be careful since an upside ceiling doesn't exist in the market.</p>\n<p>This is the point where I would like to address the risks of my thesis: First, inflation may stabilize quicker than expected, which would push a potential interest rate hike back to 2024 or later. In this case, money will continue to be cheap, which will support higher valuations and the growth market in general. Secondly, companies can scale somewhat faster today, making a historical valuation comparison to early years less relevant. Lastly, I could be underappreciating given growth rates and the ability of management to shake off competition in the long run. As the global pandemic shut down economies around the world and caused substantial economic contraction, federal banks counteracted by injecting trillions of dollars into the economy in the form of stimulus checks, grants, loans, etc. As a result, fresh liquidity immediately reflected itself in stocks and other market instruments.\nSource: Bloomberg\nThroughout this article, I want to demonstrate a few graphs to strengthen my argument, with the chart above being the first one. The Nasdaq 100 is perhaps the most common index to track the technology market, although it only includes profitable and large-cap Tech stocks. On average, the index currently holds a Price to Sales ratio of 5.7x, levels that the Index last saw in early 2001 after the dot.com bubble began to bust.\nIt is important to note that at the height of the bubble, the ratio stood at 7.5x, around 30% higher than it is right now. Still, the median valuation has been trailing significantly lower, at around 3.5x over the last 20 years. Of course, it can be argued that Technology deserves a higher valuation these days due to the increased use of Technology and perhaps higher growth rates. However, should Technology valuations be nearly 100% higher than just 5 years ago, in 2016, where Technology integration was pretty much at the same level as today?\nProfitability\nIn recent years, unprofitable but growing companies have been favored over mature and profitable companies. Historically, in terms of performance, there has been no significant difference in terms of returns on a risk-adjusted basis - it really does depend on the time period of investing. That said, in the last 5 years, growth outperformed value by a wide margin - by 105% to be exact. I derived this from the 5-year performance chart of Vanguard's Growth ETF vs. Vanguard's Value ETF. These advantages mean that the company will remain superior in the near term when it comes to profitability and diversity within the EV industry and can best utilize the rapid growth rate the entire industry is expecting.</p>\n<p>The Long-Term Headwinds Haven't Changed</p>\n<p>As I've been highlighting for several months now,Tesla's long-term prospects have dimmedsince other automobile companies like Ford and General Motors (GM) in the United States, NIO (NIO) and others in the Asia-Pacific region and other European and South Korean automobile manufacturers moved up their electrification process timelines. The main reason for this is that these companies have very solid brand recognition, and individuals who have owned these models for years or decades have the option to opt for an electric version of those; they choose those over trying out a new untested model a majority of the time.</p>\n<p>With companies like Ford introducing the all-electric F-150 and others, it's unclear how Tesla can maintain this high growth rate beyond 2024 as these models are expected to hit the streets and begin capturing back market share away from Tesla and other current models. Other factors like Tesla opening up their charging station network to all EV models, as well as a massive capital injection into EV charging stations in the most recent infrastructure spending bill in the United States, will surely help Tesla's income when it charges for the use, but it also helps other companies overcome the main hurdle of widespread adoption - clearing a pathway for more and more EV models to emerge.</p>\n<p>The Short-Term Tailwinds Are Emerging</p>\n<p>Tesla has several near-term tailwinds which will keep way ahead of any competition for the next 12 to 24 months. These mostly all boil down to profitability but also focus on various business model advantages.</p>\n<p>1. A positive profit margin: While other companies are just now beginning to invest in transforming their manufacturing facilities from fossil fuel intake engines to electric vehicle production, Tesla has done this and way more efficiently. Since they've built these from scratch, they've mostly automated the process and thus enjoy a much higher profit margin. Other companies won't see a profit per vehicle for years to come.</p>\n<p>2. Surging battery manufacturing: Although other companies have a mixed position on whether to manufacture their own batteries or set up joint ventures with existing companies, Tesla has been churning out batteries for years and have, as similar with the vehicle manufacturing process, nearly fully automated the process to maximize profits per unit.</p>\n<p>3. International manufacturing: Other companies, thus far, have focused on restructuring and transforming current assembly plants in the United States and will likely take several more years before they do so for other international facilities, which means they will need to spend a fortune shipping these new vehicles around the world to the EMEA and the Asia-Pacific. Tesla, on the other hand, has manufacturing facilities in the United States and in China and is set to open their plant in Germany as well as being in final development stages of an India plant, which will allow them to access a much larger market.</p>\n<p>4. Charging stations advantage: Although the new infrastructure bill in the United States, as well as massive investments in countries like Japan and China, are certain to put in hundreds of thousands of new EV charging stations across the globe, this will take time. So far, only Tesla has a real robust charging network across the world. A recent development, which does have negative elements to it as mentioned earlier, has a positive near term one - they will be raking in net profits from allowing other electric vehicles to charge on their network. This means that they'll likely be profiting from each vehicle their competitors churn out, at least until the scaling up of non-Tesla charging stations takes place.</p>\n<p>5. \"Other Business\" growth rate: While other automobile companies are still spending hand over fist on their other models and products, Tesla enjoys being only in high-growth industries like SolarCity's solar panels and battery sales. As I'll expand on in the next segment, they also don't have near-term or long-term financial obligations from these \"other business\" segments as establishment automobile companies have.</p>\n<p>Balance Sheet Advantages</p>\n<p>Although some elements of their balance sheet advantage are set to help them in the long run as well, they're mostly advantages for the short term since once these other companies begin making a profit from their EV sales - a lot of this will be reversed.</p>\n<p>Tesla's main advantage, as mentioned earlier, is that they're actually raking in cash from each car they sell, allowing them to use that cash to continue and set up more manufacturing facilities and invest in battery technology, solar technology and production increases. This is contrary to other automobile companies which have high financial obligations to their other business segments like pensions and leases. This will further aid the company's overall profit margin, while they don't struggle with such obligations.</p>\n<p>These other companies will need to use profits and cash from their existing legacy business segments to pay for their losses on each vehicle they produce, hurting their overall valuation moving forward.</p>\n<p>Although Tesla has $6.9 billion inlong-term debt, a factor which kept many investors on the sidelines as debt racked up, they currently hold just under $16.3 billion in cash and equivalents, making their net debt position negative. They've been using the cash to pay down their debt as well,reducing their interest expense burdenfrom almost $800 million in 2020 to just over $500 million in 2021. Tesla paid back $15 billion in debt in 2021 for a net debt reduction of $6 billion. There's very little doubt that other automobile companies will be forced to take on more debt to finance increased production and in this raising rate environment, that can snowball.</p>\n<p>Tesla is set to seecash flowof around $10 billion annually whereas a company like Ford has been fluctuating between a net positive and negative cash flow status for the past few years, and that's not expected to change through 2025 as they continue to increase investments in the electrification of their vehicles.</p>\n<p>What About Current Valuation</p>\n<p>Analystscurrently expect the company to report EPS of $5.38 for 2021 and grow at a fast pace to reach EPS of $10.33 for 2024. As I mentioned in my earlier article, I believe that, given comparison with other major automobile companies, the company is fairly valued at around 75x forward earnings.</p>\n<p>I do, however, believe that some of the current competition expectations are overblown for the near term, as I've been mentioning throughout the entire article. Therefore, I do believe that Tesla will outperform current expectations at least through 2023. This means that a 75x forward earnings multiple is the ground base for appropriate valuation, I believe.</p>\n<p>This presents the following fair value, with the implied increase potential:</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/052968e079d7fe8419e4790de451c9fd\" tg-width=\"620\" tg-height=\"201\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\">As you can see, this means that Tesla is almost 40% overvalued relative to earnings expectations, even if they overcome them by as much as 20%. However, given that these expectations are likely to be beaten, I don't believe that shorting the company is a good idea, but one thing that is worth looking out for is a general market correction.</p>\n<p>The Biggest Risk Of Owning Tesla</p>\n<p>The biggest risk with owning Tesla right now is that, in a general market correction, which can happen at any moment as the post-pandemic trade is winding down, companies with lofty expectations tend to fall the most as fair value is sought beyond what their potential is way down the line.</p>\n<p>I don't believe that shorting Tesla is the right approach, even though my disclosures down below and in previous article state that I am, given general market exposure. I am short simply because I don't believe that much upwards potential is there, whilst downward potential in a market correction is vast. So, given that I am mostly long, this short is a general portfolio hedge while I reduce positions in case of a correction.</p>\n<p>In Conclusion</p>\n<p>Tesla has several positive catalysts which should keep them on top of the EV industry growth roster for the next 24 to 36 months, while other companies struggle to make even a single penny on their new vehicles. These are set, I believe, to allow them to beat earnings expectations for that time period.</p>\n<p>Even so, their long-term competitive pressures remain high and as I stated in my previous article - their long-term growth prospects will continue to dim as time moves on.</p>\n<p>Even with these positive near-term advantages, I still believe that the company is overvalued by as much as 40%, and although I do not favor shorting the company for this overvaluation, I remain slightly bearish on their long-term prospects and neutral to slightly bullish on their near-term one.</p>","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Other factors like Tesla opening up their charging station network to all EV models, as well as a massive capital injection into EV charging stations in the most recent infrastructure spending bill in the United States, will surely help Tesla's income when it charges for the use, but it also helps other companies overcome the main hurdle of widespread adoption - clearing a pathway for more and more EV models to emerge.\nThe Short-Term Tailwinds Are Emerging\nTesla has several near-term tailwinds which will keep way ahead of any competition for the next 12 to 24 months. These mostly all boil down to profitability but also focus on various business model advantages.\n1. A positive profit margin: While other companies are just now beginning to invest in transforming their manufacturing facilities from fossil fuel intake engines to electric vehicle production, Tesla has done this and way more efficiently. Since they've built these from scratch, they've mostly automated the process and thus enjoy a much higher profit margin. Other companies won't see a profit per vehicle for years to come.\n2. Surging battery manufacturing: Although other companies have a mixed position on whether to manufacture their own batteries or set up joint ventures with existing companies, Tesla has been churning out batteries for years and have, as similar with the vehicle manufacturing process, nearly fully automated the process to maximize profits per unit.\n3. International manufacturing: Other companies, thus far, have focused on restructuring and transforming current assembly plants in the United States and will likely take several more years before they do so for other international facilities, which means they will need to spend a fortune shipping these new vehicles around the world to the EMEA and the Asia-Pacific. Tesla, on the other hand, has manufacturing facilities in the United States and in China and is set to open their plant in Germany as well as being in final development stages of an India plant, which will allow them to access a much larger market.\n4. Charging stations advantage: Although the new infrastructure bill in the United States, as well as massive investments in countries like Japan and China, are certain to put in hundreds of thousands of new EV charging stations across the globe, this will take time. So far, only Tesla has a real robust charging network across the world. A recent development, which does have negative elements to it as mentioned earlier, has a positive near term one - they will be raking in net profits from allowing other electric vehicles to charge on their network. This means that they'll likely be profiting from each vehicle their competitors churn out, at least until the scaling up of non-Tesla charging stations takes place.\n5. \"Other Business\" growth rate: While other automobile companies are still spending hand over fist on their other models and products, Tesla enjoys being only in high-growth industries like SolarCity's solar panels and battery sales. As I'll expand on in the next segment, they also don't have near-term or long-term financial obligations from these \"other business\" segments as establishment automobile companies have.\nBalance Sheet Advantages\nAlthough some elements of their balance sheet advantage are set to help them in the long run as well, they're mostly advantages for the short term since once these other companies begin making a profit from their EV sales - a lot of this will be reversed.\nTesla's main advantage, as mentioned earlier, is that they're actually raking in cash from each car they sell, allowing them to use that cash to continue and set up more manufacturing facilities and invest in battery technology, solar technology and production increases. This is contrary to other automobile companies which have high financial obligations to their other business segments like pensions and leases. This will further aid the company's overall profit margin, while they don't struggle with such obligations.\nThese other companies will need to use profits and cash from their existing legacy business segments to pay for their losses on each vehicle they produce, hurting their overall valuation moving forward.\nAlthough Tesla has $6.9 billion inlong-term debt, a factor which kept many investors on the sidelines as debt racked up, they currently hold just under $16.3 billion in cash and equivalents, making their net debt position negative. They've been using the cash to pay down their debt as well,reducing their interest expense burdenfrom almost $800 million in 2020 to just over $500 million in 2021. Tesla paid back $15 billion in debt in 2021 for a net debt reduction of $6 billion. There's very little doubt that other automobile companies will be forced to take on more debt to finance increased production and in this raising rate environment, that can snowball.\nTesla is set to seecash flowof around $10 billion annually whereas a company like Ford has been fluctuating between a net positive and negative cash flow status for the past few years, and that's not expected to change through 2025 as they continue to increase investments in the electrification of their vehicles.\nWhat About Current Valuation\nAnalystscurrently expect the company to report EPS of $5.38 for 2021 and grow at a fast pace to reach EPS of $10.33 for 2024. As I mentioned in my earlier article, I believe that, given comparison with other major automobile companies, the company is fairly valued at around 75x forward earnings.\nI do, however, believe that some of the current competition expectations are overblown for the near term, as I've been mentioning throughout the entire article. Therefore, I do believe that Tesla will outperform current expectations at least through 2023. This means that a 75x forward earnings multiple is the ground base for appropriate valuation, I believe.\nThis presents the following fair value, with the implied increase potential:\nAs you can see, this means that Tesla is almost 40% overvalued relative to earnings expectations, even if they overcome them by as much as 20%. However, given that these expectations are likely to be beaten, I don't believe that shorting the company is a good idea, but one thing that is worth looking out for is a general market correction.\nThe Biggest Risk Of Owning Tesla\nThe biggest risk with owning Tesla right now is that, in a general market correction, which can happen at any moment as the post-pandemic trade is winding down, companies with lofty expectations tend to fall the most as fair value is sought beyond what their potential is way down the line.\nI don't believe that shorting Tesla is the right approach, even though my disclosures down below and in previous article state that I am, given general market exposure. I am short simply because I don't believe that much upwards potential is there, whilst downward potential in a market correction is vast. So, given that I am mostly long, this short is a general portfolio hedge while I reduce positions in case of a correction.\nIn Conclusion\nTesla has several positive catalysts which should keep them on top of the EV industry growth roster for the next 24 to 36 months, while other companies struggle to make even a single penny on their new vehicles. For instance, BofA Global Research analyst Wamsi Mohan is projecting revenue of $77 billion, with profits of $1.05 a share, driven by strength across the company’s hardware portfolio. Sales from regulatory credits—a source of revenue seen as less sustainable than sales of vehicles—-fell, but operating profits rose to record highs because of strong profitability in the automotive division.</p>\n<p>Tesla generates the credits by making more than its fair share of zero- emission cars and sells them to manufacturers that still rely on internal-combustion engines. Pessimists on the stock believe that source of income will dwindle over time.</p>\n<p>The stock, however, was down 1.5% in early trading Tuesday. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average,for comparison, had fallen 0.6% and 0.4%, respectively.</p>\n<p>It is a muted reaction to a good quarter, typical of the way stocks of mature businesses behave. Tesla stock moved more than 10% in response to three of the four 2019 quarterly reports. But it rose or fell an average of about 2.5% in response to the 2020 earnings reports.</p>\n<p>The typical 2020 move was a fall in the price in response to news of better-than-expected results. The same thing happened after the release of results for the first quarter of 2021.</p>\n<p>That is another sign of maturity. A small drop in response to better-than-expected results is the typical outcome for stocks. Investors always expect companies to exceed analyst projections, and when they get that result, they “sell the news.”</p>\n<p>The reaction among Wall Street analysts to the latest results is yet another sign of maturity. Mizuho analyst Vijay Rakesh raised his target for Tesla’s stock price by $5 to $825 following the news, for a bump of less than 1%.</p>\n<p>Back in January, RBC analyst Joe Spak raised his target price to $700 a share from $339 after changing how he thought about Tesla’s business. That was a huge target-price change from a large broker.</p>\n<p>Smaller changes in price targets can indicate a business is becoming more stable, and that analysts believe they have a grip on what is happening. That reduces the need for them to dramatically overhaul their views in response to events.</p>\n<p>Overall, the average analyst target price is up about $18, or 3%, in reaction to Monday’s results to about $644 a share. Tesla shares are trading about 1% or 2% above the average analyst target price.</p>\n<p>Target prices generally reflect where analysts think a stock should trade to earn a fair return out into the future. The average target price on stocks in the S&P 500 implies a gain of 7%.</p>\n<p>Even the fact that Tesla is trading around its average analyst target price is a sign of maturity. A year ago, the average target price for Tesla stock was about $225, while the price was above $300.</p>\n<p>Shareholders and bulls on the stock might like a bigger response from the stock when earnings come in strong, but the days of 20% moves, up or down, might be gone for Tesla. Sales from regulatory credits—a source of revenue seen as less sustainable than sales of vehicles—-fell, but operating profits rose to record highs because of strong profitability in the automotive division.\nTesla generates the credits by making more than its fair share of zero- emission cars and sells them to manufacturers that still rely on internal-combustion engines. Pessimists on the stock believe that source of income will dwindle over time.\nThe stock, however, was down 1.5% in early trading Tuesday. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average,for comparison, had fallen 0.6% and 0.4%, respectively.\nIt is a muted reaction to a good quarter, typical of the way stocks of mature businesses behave. Tesla stock moved more than 10% in response to three of the four 2019 quarterly reports. But it rose or fell an average of about 2.5% in response to the 2020 earnings reports.\nThe typical 2020 move was a fall in the price in response to news of better-than-expected results. The same thing happened after the release of results for the first quarter of 2021.\nThat is another sign of maturity. A small drop in response to better-than-expected results is the typical outcome for stocks. Investors always expect companies to exceed analyst projections, and when they get that result, they “sell the news.”\nThe reaction among Wall Street analysts to the latest results is yet another sign of maturity. Mizuho analyst Vijay Rakesh raised his target for Tesla’s stock price by $5 to $825 following the news, for a bump of less than 1%.\nBack in January, RBC analyst Joe Spak raised his target price to $700 a share from $339 after changing how he thought about Tesla’s business. That was a huge target-price change from a large broker.\nSmaller changes in price targets can indicate a business is becoming more stable, and that analysts believe they have a grip on what is happening. That reduces the need for them to dramatically overhaul their views in response to events.\nOverall, the average analyst target price is up about $18, or 3%, in reaction to Monday’s results to about $644 a share. Tesla shares are trading about 1% or 2% above the average analyst target price.\nTarget prices generally reflect where analysts think a stock should trade to earn a fair return out into the future. The average target price on stocks in the S&P 500 implies a gain of 7%.\nEven the fact that Tesla is trading around its average analyst target price is a sign of maturity. A year ago, the average target price for Tesla stock was about $225, while the price was above $300.\nShareholders and bulls on the stock might like a bigger response from the stock when earnings come in strong, but the days of 20% moves, up or down, might be gone for Tesla. That's roughly in-line with history. Typically it happens eight times annually, and we'reroughly halfway through the year.</p>\n<p>But here's the interesting part that shows how \"buying the dip\" is in vogue. In just one week following the S&P 500 falling below its 50-day moving average each time this year, it gained 3.95% on average.</p>\n<p>That's an astounding level of bounce back. Historically, the S&P 500 only inched up 0.06% in the week after dropping to the 50-day moving average since 1945. And this year's average one-week bounce back ranks No. 1 for any year since at least World War II, Bespoke says.</p>\n<p>And it's not just a short bounce either. Following its drops below the 50-day moving average this year, the S&P 500 was 5.7% higher, on average, a month later.
