When sentiment is approaching extreme levels, stock traders may begin to see a reversal as more likely which is why it is seen as both a contrarian indicator as well as potentially having a leading component.
\n
Below is an example ofthe IG Client Sentiment Index, IG’s sentiment gauge derived from execution desk data, for the Dow Jones index (Ticker: Wall Street). Based on the data below, 64% of traders have short positions which means that majority of traders expect the price of Wall Street to drop. However, sentiment is seen to be bullish, meaning that based on this data the price of Wall Street may be expected to increase. Although it is not advisable to trade-off sentiment (or any individual indicator) alone, an individual who is trading a constituent of the DJIA could use this data as an informative tool before applying additional indicators.
\n
DailyFX providesclient sentimentdata which isderived from live IG retail client trades forforex, commodities, cryptocurrencies and major stock indices. Stock sentiment analysis is also available for individual shares on the IG platform where applicable or available.
\n
RELATIVE STRENGTH INDEX (RSI)
\n
The relative strength index (RSI) is a momentum oscillator that measures the magnitude of price movements to determine whether a market is overbought or oversold. A market is seen to be oversold when the RSI is below 30 and is overbought when the RSI is above 70. These are key levels could indicate a potential reversal, classifying the RSI as a leading indicator.
\n
The chart below shows the RSI being applied to the daily chart for Uber. The RSI trades between 30 and 70 for some time before falling below the 30 level. Below the 30 level, the first signal is a false signal because although it looks like the trend is going to reverse to the upside, the price continues to fall. However, the second signal is present when the RSI is below 30 and turns towards the upside. However, the RSI only confirms the reversal by crossing above the 30 line the next day.
\n
STOCHASTIC
\n
The stochastic oscillator is another momentum indicator which is used to determine overbought and oversold conditions when trading stocks. Unlike the RSI which measures the speed of price movements, the stochastic measures current price in relation to its price range over a period of time.
\n
The %K line (the black line) is calculated by using the latest closing price relative to the lowest low and highest high over a specified period of time and the %D line represents the simple moving average of the %K (three period Simple Moving Average is the most common). With stochastics, a bullish crossover occurs when the %K line (the black line) crosses over and above the %D line (the red dotted line). Likewise, a bearish signal occurs when the %K line crosses under and below the %D line. The strongest signals will often occur when there is a bullish cross-coupled with a move above 20 from below and a bearish signal coupled with a move below 80.
\n
In the image below, the stochastic indicator is applied to the S&P 500 price chart (Ticker: US 500). As indicated on the chart, a bearish crossover occurs from above the 80 line, indicating that the trend may reverse to the downside. The reversal is then confirmed once the lines cross 80. Likewise, the bullish crossover occurs below 20 and the reversal is confirmed once the 20 line is crossed.
\n
SIMPLE MOVING AVERAGE (SMA)
\n
A simple moving average (SMA) is a lagging indicator which represents the average price of a security over a specified period of time. In a trending market, themoving averagemodulates short-term price fluctuations and allowsstock traders to identify the trend in a simplistic way.
\n
As depicted in the chart below,in a rangebound market,it is also possible to use a moving average to identify support and resistance levels. By applying the 50 day MA to the Boeing price chart, it is clear that the 50-day SMA can also be seen as potential support evenas Boeing is trading in a ranging environment.
\n
EXPONENTIAL MOVING AVERAGE (EMA)
\n
As with the SMA discussed above, the exponential moving average (EMA) is a lagging indicator which represents the average price of a security over a specified period of time. However, unlike the SMA which gives equal weighting to all data points in the series, the EMA gives more weight to recent prices, removing some of the lag found with a traditional SMA. This makes the EMA an optimal candidate for trend trading as it allows traders to get a holistic view of the market without missing out on opportunities with may be due to the lag of a simple moving average.
\n
MACD
\n
The MACD (moving average convergence/divergence) is a technical indicator that can be used to measure both momentum and the strength of the trend. The MACD displays a MACD line (blue), signal line (red) and a histogram (green) which shows the difference between the MACD line and the signal line.
\n
The MACD line is the difference between two exponential moving averages (the 12 and 26 period moving averages using common default settings), whilst the signal line is generally a 9-period exponentially average of the MACD line. These lines waver in and around the zero line, giving the MACD the characteristics of an oscillator with overbought and oversold signals occurring above and below the zero-line respectively.
\n
With reference to the chart below, featuring Apple:
\n
\n
A bullish signal is present when the MACD line crosses ABOVE the signal line from BELOW the zero line.
\n
A bearish signal is present when the MACD line crosses BELOW the signal line from ABOVE the zero line.
\n
\n
TECHNICAL INDICATORS FAQ’S
\n
What is the difference between a leading and a lagging indicator?
\n
Although leading and lagging indicators are both derived from historic price data, a leading indicator is used to indicate expected price movements in the market while lagging indicators are used to provide entry and exit signals once the trend has been identified.
\n
Although similarities and differences exist between the two, both are equally important and it is often beneficial for traders to use both leading and lagging indicators simultaneously.
","source":"lsy1568971417606","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
6 Popular Technical Indicators for Stock Trading
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n6 Popular Technical Indicators for Stock Trading\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-08-05 15:26 GMT+8 DailyFX\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Traders with a strong understanding of technical indicators are usually better equipped to navigate the financial markets than those that lack this knowledge. This makes the EMA an optimal candidate for trend trading as it allows traders to get a holistic view of the market without missing out on opportunities with may be due to the lag of a simple moving average.\nMACD\nThe MACD (moving average convergence/divergence) is a technical indicator that can be used to measure both momentum and the strength of the trend. The MACD displays a MACD line (blue), signal line (red) and a histogram (green) which shows the difference between the MACD line and the signal line.\nThe MACD line is the difference between two exponential moving averages (the 12 and 26 period moving averages using common default settings), whilst the signal line is generally a 9-period exponentially average of the MACD line. These lines waver in and around the zero line, giving the MACD the characteristics of an oscillator with overbought and oversold signals occurring above and below the zero-line respectively.\nWith reference to the chart below, featuring Apple:\n\nA bullish signal is present when the MACD line crosses ABOVE the signal line from BELOW the zero line.\nA bearish signal is present when the MACD line crosses BELOW the signal line from ABOVE the zero line.\n\nTECHNICAL INDICATORS FAQ’S\nWhat is the difference between a leading and a lagging indicator?\nAlthough leading and lagging indicators are both derived from historic price data, a leading indicator is used to indicate expected price movements in the market while lagging indicators are used to provide entry and exit signals once the trend has been identified.\nAlthough similarities and differences exist between the two, both are equally important and it is often beneficial for traders to use both leading and lagging indicators simultaneously.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":279,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":804210964,"gmtCreate":1627957586858,"gmtModify":1703498577450,"author":{"id":"4089678242671080","authorId":"4089678242671080","name":"thepheebsfan","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9c2858fc90646a9df6d00501e4d02d15","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4089678242671080","idStr":"4089678242671080"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"To the moon!AMD is still undervalued.","listText":"To the moon!AMD is still undervalued.","text":"To the moon!AMD is still undervalued.","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c7f47d5049f02c8e58aa0eb070b56fb3","width":"1125","height":"4213"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/804210964","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":129,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":801410520,"gmtCreate":1627527344560,"gmtModify":1703491723527,"author":{"id":"4089678242671080","authorId":"4089678242671080","name":"thepheebsfan","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9c2858fc90646a9df6d00501e4d02d15","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"authorIdStr":"4089678242671080","idStr":"4089678242671080"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Please like and comment tq!","listText":"Please like and comment tq!","text":"Please like and comment tq!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/801410520","repostId":"1127264445","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1127264445","pubTimestamp":1627514621,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1127264445?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-07-29 07:23","market":"us","language":"en","title":"S&P 500 ends off day's lows; Powell says Fed still a ways away from rate hikes","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1127264445","media":"Reuters","summary":"NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 ended little changed on Wednesday but off its session lows after th","content":"
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 ended little changed on Wednesday but off its session lows after the Federal Reserve said the U.S. economic recovery remains on track and Chair Jerome Powell said the central bank was still a ways away from considering raising interest rates.
\n
Keeping the market in check, shares of tech giant Apple Inc fell 1.2% after it forecast slowing revenue growth.
\n
In a news conference following the release of a new policy statement from the Fed, Powell also said the U.S. job market still had “some ground to cover” before it would be time to pull back from the economic support the U.S. central bank put in place in the spring of 2020 to battle the coronavirus pandemic’s economic shocks.
\n
“It looks like probably the most positive thing for the market was that they are nowhere near increasing interest rates,” said Alan Lancz, president, Alan B. This article will cover six of the most popular technical indicators for stock trading.
\n
BEST TECHNICAL INDICATORS FOR STOCK TRADING
\n
For traders looking for the most effective technical indicators, it is important to consider the objectives of the trading strategy as well as the current market condition. For individuals trading individual stocks, it is often beneficial to apply indicators to the stock index in which that share belongs to get a holistic view of the larger market as a whole.
\n
Below are six of the most popular technical indicators to use when analyzing stocks:
\n
\n
\n
\n

INDICATOR NAME

\n

TYPE OF INDICATOR

\n

CHARACTERISTICS

\n
\n
\n

Client Sentiment

\n

Contrarian Indicator

\n
\n
\n
Shows client positioning of the market
\n
Indicates when markets are nearing extremes
\n
Leading indicator
\n
Useful in trending markets
\n

\n
\n
\n

Relative Strength Index (RSI)

\n

Momentum Oscillator

\n
\n
\n
Plotted between 0 – 100
\n
Indicates when the market is overbought or oversold
\n
Leading indicator
\n
Useful in trending markets
\n

\n
\n
\n

Stochastic

\n

Momentum Oscillator

\n
\n
\n
Plotted between 0 – 100
\n
Consists of two lines, %K and %D line
\n
Indicates when the market is overbought or oversold
\n
Leading indicator
\n
Useful in rangebound markets
\n

\n
\n
\n

Simple Moving Average (SMA)

\n

Trend following indicator

\n
\n
\n
The SMA represents the average price of a security over a specified period of time
\n
Equal weighting is given to all points in the data set
\n
Used to confirm the direction of the current trend
\n
Lagging indicator
\n
Useful in trending markets
\n

\n
\n
\n

Exponential Moving Average (EMA)

\n

Trend following indicator

\n
\n
\n
The EMA represents the average price of a security over a specified period of time with a greater emphasis on recent prices
\n
Higher weighting is given to recent points in the data set
\n
Lagging indicator
\n
Useful in trending markets
\n

\n
\n
\n

Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD)

\n

Momentum oscillator

\n
\n
\n
The MACD measures both momentum and the trend
\n
Overbought and oversold signals occur above and below the zero-line
\n
Lagging indicator
\n
Useful in trending markets
\n

\n
\n
\n
\n
CLIENT SENTIMENT
\n
Client sentiment data is derivedfrom a brokerage’s execution desk data, measuringlive retail client trades to determine possible directional biases in the market.
While personal investing goals, risk appetite and trading style will help to determine a strategy and trading plan, knowing what technical indicators to use in your approach can help to determine possible entry and exit points.\nHundreds of technical indicators exist, and clear signals can be identified using effective indicators as part of a strategy. This article will cover six of the most popular technical indicators for stock trading.\nBEST TECHNICAL INDICATORS FOR STOCK TRADING\nFor traders looking for the most effective technical indicators, it is important to consider the objectives of the trading strategy as well as the current market condition. For individuals trading individual stocks, it is often beneficial to apply indicators to the stock index in which that share belongs to get a holistic view of the larger market as a whole.\nBelow are six of the most popular technical indicators to use when analyzing stocks:\n\n\n\nINDICATOR NAME\nTYPE OF INDICATOR\nCHARACTERISTICS\n\n\nClient Sentiment\nContrarian Indicator\n\n\nShows client positioning of the market\nIndicates when markets are nearing extremes\nLeading indicator\nUseful in trending markets\n\n\n\nRelative Strength Index (RSI)\nMomentum Oscillator\n\n\nPlotted between 0 – 100\nIndicates when the market is overbought or oversold\nLeading indicator\nUseful in trending markets\n\n\n\nStochastic\nMomentum Oscillator\n\n\nPlotted between 0 – 100\nConsists of two lines, %K and %D line\nIndicates when the market is overbought or oversold\nLeading indicator\nUseful in rangebound markets\n\n\n\nSimple Moving Average (SMA)\nTrend following indicator\n\n\nThe SMA represents the average price of a security over a specified period of time\nEqual weighting is given to all points in the data set\nUsed to confirm the direction of the current trend\nLagging indicator\nUseful in trending markets\n\n\n\nExponential Moving Average (EMA)\nTrend following indicator\n\n\nThe EMA represents the average price of a security over a specified period of time with a greater emphasis on recent prices\nHigher weighting is given to recent points in the data set\nLagging indicator\nUseful in trending markets\n\n\n\nMoving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD)\nMomentum oscillator\n\n\nThe MACD measures both momentum and the trend\nOverbought and oversold signals occur above and below the zero-line\nLagging indicator\nUseful in trending markets\n\n\n\n\nCLIENT SENTIMENT\nClient sentiment data is derivedfrom a brokerage’s execution desk data, measuringlive retail client trades to determine possible directional biases in the market. When sentiment is approaching extreme levels, stock traders may begin to see a reversal as more likely which is why it is seen as both a contrarian indicator as well as potentially having a leading component.\nBelow is an example ofthe IG Client Sentiment Index, IG’s sentiment gauge derived from execution desk data, for the Dow Jones index (Ticker: Wall Street). Based on the data below, 64% of traders have short positions which means that majority of traders expect the price of Wall Street to drop. However, sentiment is seen to be bullish, meaning that based on this data the price of Wall Street may be expected to increase. Although it is not advisable to trade-off sentiment (or any individual indicator) alone, an individual who is trading a constituent of the DJIA could use this data as an informative tool before applying additional indicators.\nDailyFX providesclient sentimentdata which isderived from live IG retail client trades forforex, commodities, cryptocurrencies and major stock indices. Stock sentiment analysis is also available for individual shares on the IG platform where applicable or available.\nRELATIVE STRENGTH INDEX (RSI)\nThe relative strength index (RSI) is a momentum oscillator that measures the magnitude of price movements to determine whether a market is overbought or oversold. A market is seen to be oversold when the RSI is below 30 and is overbought when the RSI is above 70. These are key levels could indicate a potential reversal, classifying the RSI as a leading indicator.\nThe chart below shows the RSI being applied to the daily chart for Uber. However, the RSI only confirms the reversal by crossing above the 30 line the next day.\nSTOCHASTIC\nThe stochastic oscillator is another momentum indicator which is used to determine overbought and oversold conditions when trading stocks. Unlike the RSI which measures the speed of price movements, the stochastic measures current price in relation to its price range over a period of time.\nThe %K line (the black line) is calculated by using the latest closing price relative to the lowest low and highest high over a specified period of time and the %D line represents the simple moving average of the %K (three period Simple Moving Average is the most common). With stochastics, a bullish crossover occurs when the %K line (the black line) crosses over and above the %D line (the red dotted line). As indicated on the chart, a bearish crossover occurs from above the 80 line, indicating that the trend may reverse to the downside. The reversal is then confirmed once the lines cross 80. Likewise, the bullish crossover occurs below 20 and the reversal is confirmed once the 20 line is crossed.\nSIMPLE MOVING AVERAGE (SMA)\nA simple moving average (SMA) is a lagging indicator which represents the average price of a security over a specified period of time. It dropped on Tuesday after Apple warned that growth in the September quarter would not be as strong as June’s.\nHere are the key numbers compared to what Wall Street was expecting, per Refinitiv estimates:\n\nEPS: $1.30 vs. $1.01 estimated\nRevenue: $81.41 billion vs. $73.30 billion estimated, up 36% year-over-year\niPhone revenue: $39.57 billion vs. $34.01 billion estimated, up 49.78% year-over-year\nServices revenue: $17.48 billion vs. $16.33 billion estimated, up 33% year-over-year\nOther Products revenue: $8.76 billion vs. $7.80 billion estimated, up 40% year-over-year\nMac revenue:$8.24 billion vs. $8.07 billion estimated, up 16% year-over-year\niPad revenue: $7.37 billion vs. $7.15 billion estimated, up 12% year-over-year\nGross margin: 43.3% vs. 41.9% estimated\n\nApple did not provide formal guidance for the sixth quarter in a row and has not since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.\nHowever, Apple CFO Luca Maestri said that it expected double-digit year-over-year growth in the current quarter. Maestri said that Apple expected less than 36% growth in the September quarter because of foreign exchange rates, less growth in its services business, and supply constraints for iPhones and iPads.\nApple CEO Tim Cook said in a call with analysts that Apple is seeing supply constraints related to silicon that would affect the company’s iPhone and iPad sales in the September quarter.\nApple also had a strong quarter in its Greater China region, which includes Taiwan and Hong Kong in addition to the mainland. Apple reported $14.76 billion in sales in the region, up 58% from the same quarter last year, although it was an easy comparison given that China was in stages of lockdown during the quarter.\nAmericas sales were up nearly 33% year-over-year to $39.57 billion.\nWATCH NOWVIDEO00:46Apple up after earnings, revenue beat\nApple’s quarter ending in June is typically one of its slowest of the year, but the company has benefitted from work-at-home and remote schooling trends that have boosted sales of its premium computers.\nLast year’s June quarter was a company record for sales despite lockdowns around the world, so Apple is growing even compared to a strong basis from a year ago.\nCook mentioned that the success was not just because of people upgrading their old iPhones, but also Android customers buying their first iPhone.\n“We saw a very strong double digit increases in both upgraders and switchers during the quarter,” Cook said.\nApple’s quarter could have been even better if it had not grappled with supply shortages likely linked to the global chip shortage, which mostly affected its Mac and iPad sales.\n“The shortage primarily affected Mac and iPad,” Apple CEO Tim Cook told CNBC’s Josh Lipton. “We had predicted the shortages to total $3 to $4 billion. But we were actually able to mitigate some of that, and we came in at the lower than the low end part of that range.”\nHowever, Apple warned that silicon supply constraints could affect its September quarter iPhone and iPad sales, although the chips that are in short supply are the “legacy nodes” of older kinds of chips, instead of the processors that power Apple devices. Cook also said on a call with analysts that the company believes that freight costs are high.\nApple’s services business also shook off investor fears that its rate of growth could slow as more people go back to work and spend less on online services and apps. Services was up 33% year-over-year, an acceleration from last quarter’s 26.7% growth rate. Maestri said that Apple expected the company’s services growth rate to decrease in the September quarter.\nWhile Apple’s services business includes many products and Apple does not break down how it’s composed, Cook told CNBC that the company set records in music, video, cloud services, advertising and payments.\n“It’s clear that our long running investment in our services strategy is succeeding,” Cook told CNBC.\nApple now has 700 million paid subscribers, up 150 million year-over-year, Cook said. Apple’s subscriber figure includes customers subscribed to an app through Apple’s App Store billing.\nCook also said that Apple pushed back its return to its campus headquarters from September to at least October because of the Covid-19 situation.\n“I’ve been really pleased with what we’ve been able to accomplish in this fully remote mode,” Cook said.\nApple declared a dividend of $0.22 per share of stock. In a statement, Apple said that it spent $29 billion on shareholder return during the quarter. Apple CFO Luca Maestri told CNBC that the company has bought back almost $450 billion in stock in recent years.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":84,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":803620592,"gmtCreate":1627437118516,"gmtModify":1703489917277,"author":{"id":"4089678242671080","authorId":"4089678242671080","name":"thepheebsfan","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9c2858fc90646a9df6d00501e4d02d15","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4089678242671080","authorIdStr":"4089678242671080"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Done!","listText":"Done!","text":"Done!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/803620592","repostId":"2154991792","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2154991792","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1627428087,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2154991792?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-07-28 07:21","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Wall St snaps five-day up streak as caution rises before tech earnings, Fed","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2154991792","media":"Reuters","summary":"NEW YORK, July 27 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Tuesday, ending a five-day winning streak in the t","content":"
NEW YORK, July 27 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Tuesday, ending a five-day winning streak in the three major indexes, as investors were cautious before results from top tech and internet names and Wednesday's Federal Reserve announcement.
\n
The Nasdaq led the day's declines, registering its biggest daily percentage drop since May 12, but the three indexes pared losses heading into the close and ended well off the lows of the session.
\n
Shares of Apple Inc, Microsoft Corp and Google parent Alphabet Inc , which all reported earnings after the bell, dropped and weighed the most on the Nasdaq and S&P 500 along with Amazon.com Inc , which is expected to report results later this week.
\n
Also, electric-car maker Tesla Inc fell 2%, a day after it posted a bigger-than-expected second-quarter profit but said a global chip shortage that led to temporary factory shutdowns for the automaker remains serious.
\n
Shares of the heavily weighted tech and internet companies have run up recently and last week regained leadership in the market, putting their results even more in the spotlight.
\n
\"Expectations are so high.
