One captures the difference in returns between value and growth stocks, while the other captures the difference between stocks in companies with small and large market capitalizations. Fama suggests tilting your diversified portfolio toward value stocks and small-cap stocks, both of which tend to do well over time.</p>\n<p>As the creator of the first index mutual fund, Bogle’s portfolio was all about stock and bond index funds, such as Vanguard’s ETF that tracks the S&amp;P 500 index SPX, +0.60%. His mantra was to lower your costs through index funds and not take actions that might destroy value: “Don’t do something, just stand there!”</p>\n<p>For Scholes, the Perfect Portfolio is about risk management. Your investment success will depend most on avoiding the downside “tail risks,” rare but severe stock market downturns such as the financial crisis of 2007–2009 or the COVID-19 pandemic, while capitalizing on the positive “tail gains.”</p>\n<p>Pay attention to what the derivatives markets such as the VIX volatility index VIX, -1.39% are telling you. Anything Musk does to make buying electrics easier is good for Tesla. Besides, Tesla could make a lot of money by opening its network. Although Tesla didn’t respond to a question about potential pricing, charging won’t be free, and refusing to let others use the system would be like a gas station only servicing Fords. And charging eventually will be as ubiquitous as gas stations.</p>\n<p>Then there’s the free publicity and advertising. He rates the stock a Buy, with a $1,000 price target. “While some will view it as letting competition in on Tesla’s supercharger moat, we disagree…”\nFor all the competition between their makers, EVs account for less than 5% of all new cars sold in the U.S. The larger struggle remains between electric- and gasoline-powered vehicles. Anything Musk does to make buying electrics easier is good for Tesla. Besides, Tesla could make a lot of money by opening its network. Although Tesla didn’t respond to a question about potential pricing, charging won’t be free, and refusing to let others use the system would be like a gas station only servicing Fords. And charging eventually will be as ubiquitous as gas stations.\nThen there’s the free publicity and advertising. Opening up the charging network shows Tesla is interested in overall EV adoption and not just in selling its own vehicles. That’s positive for the brand. And it means that thousands of EV buyers will be pulling up to a Tesla logo, again and again.\nInvestors brushed off the tweet. Activision Blizzard</h2>\n<p>Activision Blizzard owns eight franchises that have achieved at least $1 billion in lifetime bookings.&nbsp;It's best known for making <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the most-played first-person shooters on the market in <i>Call of Duty</i>. A $1,000 investment in Activision stock in 2003, right after the first <i>Call of Duty</i> title was released,&nbsp;would be worth nearly $30,000 today.</p>\n<p>The <i>Call of Duty</i> franchise continues to grow. It's included in the company's Activision segment, which reached a record 150 million monthly active users (MAUs) in the first quarter.&nbsp;With seven other major franchises under its umbrella, Activision Blizzard sees an opportunity to improve those titles to more than double its MAUs to 1 billion.</p>\n<p>Making big-budget video game titles does require investing in thousands of employees and can involve significant marketing expenses, but many other aspects of production are not as capital intensive when compared to other industries. This allows top game companies that can sell millions of copies of new releases to produce robust amounts of free cash flow. Over the past four quarters, Activision Blizzard generated $2.8 billion in free cash flow on $8.5 billion in revenue.</p>\n<p>It pays out less than a fifth of that free cash flow in dividends, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.52%. There's clearly potential for Activision to safely double or triple that yield by increasing the payout ratio over time.</p>\n<p>Activision Blizzard owns several franchises that each have a built-in base of millions of fans, including <i>World of Warcraft</i>, <i>Diablo</i>, and <i>Overwatch</i>. The company is well stocked with cash, with $9.3 billion on the balance sheet,&nbsp;which should provide plenty of capital to continue reinvesting for growth.</p>\n<h2>2. Electronic Arts</h2>\n<p>Electronic Arts is known for its EA Sports titles, most notably <i>Madden</i> and <i>FIFA</i>. EA added 42 million new players to its network during the pandemic. It&nbsp;has a total of 230 million players and viewers, but management is targeting 500 million over the next five years.</p>\n<p>Most importantly, EA has demonstrated the ability to bring out new hits. The free-to-play shooter <i>Apex Legends</i> launched in 2019&nbsp;and recently surpassed $1 billion in bookings.&nbsp;EA also revealed plans earlier this year to relaunch its previous <i>NCAA Football</i> franchise under the new title <i>EA Sports College Football</i>, which should be released within the next few years.</p>\n<p>EA's success in growing its sports business in recent years has left it with lots of cash to reinvest. It entered fiscal 2022 with $6.3 billion of cash and investments and has already put that to work.&nbsp;So far this year, EA has spent a combined $4.7 billion to buy Glu Mobile, Codemasters, and Playdemic.&nbsp;These studios bring their own game development prowess and popular titles to accelerate EA's&nbsp;expansion into mobile.</p>\n<p>In fiscal 2021, EA's free cash flow came to $1.8 billion on $5.6 billion of revenue. EA started paying a dividend within the last year,&nbsp;which signals management's confidence in its growth strategy. The quarterly dividend amounts to $0.17 per share, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.48%.&nbsp;The company's growing sports lineup and willingness to return capital to shareholders makes it a top video game stock to consider buying.</p>\n<h2>3. Tencent</h2>\n<p>Tencent is the largest video game company in the world by revenue and also operates the popular WeChat social media platform in China.&nbsp;It owns Riot Games,&nbsp;the operator of one of the top esports titles in the world in <i>League of Legends</i>. It also has ownership stakes in several other companies, including Epic Games and Activision Blizzard.</p>\n<p>Gaming makes up 29% of its annual revenue, with online advertising, fintech, and business services composing most of the balance. But gaming is Tencent's largest business segment. It's the diversity of revenue streams across fast-growing markets, including gaming and cloud services, that make it a stock worth keeping on your radar.</p>\n<p>Over the last four quarters, Tencent generated $18.5 billion in free cash flow.&nbsp;It has $39 billion of dry powder on the balance sheet,&nbsp;in addition to a portfolio of investees that was worth over $200 billion in the first quarter.&nbsp;That's a lot of firepower.</p>\n<p>Tencent compares the current state of the video game industry to the movie business in the 1930s,&nbsp;and it's investing to maintain its leadership status. Last year, management announced a deep pipeline of 40 new titles, including internally developed and licensed games in development.&nbsp;It's particularly focusing on where gamers are spending more time, which is with big-budget, immersive gaming experiences.</p>\n<p>\"The development speed, scale, range, and depth of information technology is much greater than the last Industrial Revolution,\" said Senior Vice President Steven Ma. \"This brings unimaginable opportunities for games and the space is almost limitless.\"</p>\n<p>However, investors should note the risks of investing in Chinese companies. Tencent has come under scrutiny by regulators that have cracked down on \"inappropriate\" content in the company's games,&nbsp;but Tencent has been able to navigate through these obstacles and deliver market-beating returns to investors. The stock price has fallen recently, which can be chalked up to regulatory issues and near-term investments in the business that will pressure profitability this year. Activision Blizzard\nActivision Blizzard owns eight franchises that have achieved at least $1 billion in lifetime bookings. It's best known for making one of the most-played first-person shooters on the market in Call of Duty. A $1,000 investment in Activision stock in 2003, right after the first Call of Duty title was released, would be worth nearly $30,000 today.\nThe Call of Duty franchise continues to grow. It's included in the company's Activision segment, which reached a record 150 million monthly active users (MAUs) in the first quarter. With seven other major franchises under its umbrella, Activision Blizzard sees an opportunity to improve those titles to more than double its MAUs to 1 billion.\nMaking big-budget video game titles does require investing in thousands of employees and can involve significant marketing expenses, but many other aspects of production are not as capital intensive when compared to other industries. This allows top game companies that can sell millions of copies of new releases to produce robust amounts of free cash flow. Over the past four quarters, Activision Blizzard generated $2.8 billion in free cash flow on $8.5 billion in revenue.\nIt pays out less than a fifth of that free cash flow in dividends, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.52%. There's clearly potential for Activision to safely double or triple that yield by increasing the payout ratio over time.\nActivision Blizzard owns several franchises that each have a built-in base of millions of fans, including World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch. The company is well stocked with cash, with $9.3 billion on the balance sheet, which should provide plenty of capital to continue reinvesting for growth.\n2. Electronic Arts\nElectronic Arts is known for its EA Sports titles, most notably Madden and FIFA. EA added 42 million new players to its network during the pandemic. It has a total of 230 million players and viewers, but management is targeting 500 million over the next five years.\nMost importantly, EA has demonstrated the ability to bring out new hits. The free-to-play shooter Apex Legends launched in 2019 and recently surpassed $1 billion in bookings. EA also revealed plans earlier this year to relaunch its previous NCAA Football franchise under the new title EA Sports College Football, which should be released within the next few years.\nEA's success in growing its sports business in recent years has left it with lots of cash to reinvest. It entered fiscal 2022 with $6.3 billion of cash and investments and has already put that to work. So far this year, EA has spent a combined $4.7 billion to buy Glu Mobile, Codemasters, and Playdemic. These studios bring their own game development prowess and popular titles to accelerate EA's expansion into mobile.\nIn fiscal 2021, EA's free cash flow came to $1.8 billion on $5.6 billion of revenue. The quarterly dividend amounts to $0.17 per share, bringing the current dividend yield to 0.48%. The company's growing sports lineup and willingness to return capital to shareholders makes it a top video game stock to consider buying.\n3. Tencent\nTencent is the largest video game company in the world by revenue and also operates the popular WeChat social media platform in China. It owns Riot Games, the operator of one of the top esports titles in the world in League of Legends. It also has ownership stakes in several other companies, including Epic Games and Activision Blizzard.\nGaming makes up 29% of its annual revenue, with online advertising, fintech, and business services composing most of the balance. But gaming is Tencent's largest business segment. It's the diversity of revenue streams across fast-growing markets, including gaming and cloud services, that make it a stock worth keeping on your radar.\nOver the last four quarters, Tencent generated $18.5 billion in free cash flow. It has $39 billion of dry powder on the balance sheet, in addition to a portfolio of investees that was worth over $200 billion in the first quarter. That's a lot of firepower.\nTencent compares the current state of the video game industry to the movie business in the 1930s, and it's investing to maintain its leadership status. Review your risk tolerances and asset allocation model</h2>\n<p>When you invest, you should get rewarded for holding risky investments like stocks. That reward often comes in the form of earning a higher-than-average rate of return. But you should also understand that the riskier your holdings, the higher the extremes on that rate in both good years and bad years.</p>\n<p>The table below, compiled by Vanguard, shows average annual returns between 1926 and 2000 among index funds using the asset allocation listed. It also shows the best one-year return rate for that model and the worst one-year return rate for the various asset allocation models. Note too that the number of years where a loss was reported increases as the allocation goes more toward 100% stocks.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8e70af3c789c62b5afab01a3b7ad6e32\" tg-width=\"1149\" tg-height=\"460\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data source: Vanguard Group.</span></p>\n<p>Part of assessing your risk tolerances involves gauging your comfort level. You should examine how you feel about volatility but also make sure you can withstand all of the return rate scenarios that a particular asset class provides.</p>\n<p>So if losing 43% of your wealth in a single year terrifies you, a portfolio made up of 100% stocks probably isn't a good fit. And a model with a slightly lower average rate of return but lower potential losses will probably make you more comfortable.</p>\n<h2>2. Rebalance your portfolio</h2>\n<p>As the stock market does well or badly, your asset allocation model could shift over time. This could result in you being either too aggressive or conservative compared to the model you chose. As an example, let's say we have $100,000 invested with 70% stocks and 30% bonds at the start of 2008. That year was not a good one for stocks (darn you, Great Recession!), and the $70,000 wound up as $44,100 by the end of the year. Bonds did better, gaining a little over 5% and turning $30,000 into $31,572. So at the start of 2009, an unchanged portfolio would be 58% stocks and 42% bonds.</p>\n<p>In 2009, stocks began their recovery from the Great Recession and did well. If you left your 2008 asset allocations alone (58% stocks/42% bonds), you would have seen a 17.87% return in 2009. That's a decent return. But if you adjusted your portfolio allocation back to 70% stocks/30% bonds, your return in 2009 would have been more like 20.35%. Using our hypothetical numbers, not rebalancing costs the hypothetical investor $1,877 in potential returns just in 2009.</p>\n<p>Because the stock market has done so well over the last 13 years, your portfolio may have experienced the opposite situation from our scenario above. Now instead of your allocations becoming less risky, they could've become riskier (i.e. more invested in stocks). A rebalancing may be overdue.</p>\n<p>Rebalancing basically means selling a portion of your stocks and buying bonds when the stock market does well. And you will sell bonds and buy stocks when stocks have had an off-year. Most investment advisors suggest doing this once a year, but if there is a year with a lot of volatility, you could end up doing it more often. The goal is to get your allocations back in line with your risk tolerance.</p>\n<h2>3. Revisit stock market crashes of the past</h2>\n<p>Even though stock market crashes will happen, they don't happen often. Technically one happens when there is a loss of 10% or more in a stock market index in a short period of time. And since 1929, that has only happened five times.</p>\n<p>But we don't know when the next one could happen. It could be tomorrow, next week, next month, or next year. And there is no exact way of telling how many years you'll have between crashes. For example, after 1929, the next crash didn't come until 1987. But a crash happened in 2007, roughly six years after the dot-com crash ended in 2000. The stock market had mostly positive growth following the 2007-2009 Great Recession until 2020's pandemic-induced crash.</p>\n<p>What you can take from this information is that even though you'll probably endure at least one crash in your lifetime, you probably won't experience many. And if history repeats itself, you will probably get many more years of positive growth than negative.</p>\n<h2>4. Get a long-term investing perspective</h2>\n<p>Even knowing that crashes are relatively rare, you still need to answer some questions about how you are investing. What is the money for? Are you saving for a goal like your retirement that's 20 years or more out? And if so, how much of an impact will a stock market crash now have on you meeting your goal?</p>\n<p>Say, for instance, you lose 20% of your portfolio because of a crash but you don't need the money for 25 years. You'll have plenty of time to recover those lost funds. That would suggest you can be more aggressive with your asset allocation. But what if you'll need your money sooner? That's when you should rethink an aggressive asset allocation model. If you don't have enough time, you risk having to sell your stocks before they've recovered from a crash. Money that is needed over the next year or two should be kept out of the stock market completely.</p>\n<h2>Investor takeaway</h2>\n<p>Short-term losses are a part of the investing process and often aren't worth avoiding. Six have Nobel Prizes in Economics: Harry Markowitz, the founder of Modern Portfolio Theory, the basis of the modern investment portfolio; his protégé William Sharpe, creator of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and the beta risk measure that changed how we think about risk and reward in the financial markets; Eugene Fama, who developed the Efficient Market Hypothesis; Myron Scholes and Robert Merton, two of the co-creators of the Black-Scholes/Merton option pricing model; and Robert Shiller, the behavioral economist whose work challenged the notion of market efficiency.</p>\n<p>The other four are portfolio managers, investors and bestselling authors who have sold millions of investment books, including The Vanguard Group’s founder Jack Bogle; the “Bond Guru,” Marty Leibowitz; the “Wisest Man on Wall Street” and Greenwich Associates founder Charles Ellis; and the “Wizard of Wharton,” Jeremy Siegel.</p>\n<p>It’s no surprise that there isn’t consensus among their suggestions, given their varied backgrounds and interests. The different viewpoints of these financial luminaries illustrate the complexity of portfolio management—one size clearly doesn’t fit all.</p>\n<p>Think of the Perfect Portfolios of our experts as building blocks for your own Perfect Portfolio, collectively capable of accommodating the goals and constraints of all investors, if used in the right combination.</p>\n<p>Markowitz suggests that first and foremost, you should diversify. Focus only on portfolios of securities, and in particular, those that have the highest level of expected returns for a given level of risk, Markowitz’s famous efficient frontier. The same concept applies across asset classes like bonds, real estate and commodities. The key for the investor is to find securities and asset classes with low correlations to each other, so that movements in one are not necessarily reflected in the others.</p>\n<p>Sharpe’s Perfect Portfolio is just what his famous Capital Asset Pricing Model suggests: investing in the market as a whole. Sharpe recommends a U.S. total stock market fund, a non-U.S. total stock market fund, a U.S. total bond market fund, and a non-U.S. total bond market fund.</p>\n<p>Fama and his collaborator Ken French created a model that starts with Sharpe’s CAPM and augments it with two other factors. One captures the difference in returns between value and growth stocks, while the other captures the difference between stocks in companies with small and large market capitalizations. Fama suggests tilting your diversified portfolio toward value stocks and small-cap stocks, both of which tend to do well over time.</p>\n<p>As the creator of the first index mutual fund, Bogle’s portfolio was all about stock and bond index funds, such as Vanguard’s ETF that tracks the S&amp;P 500 index SPX, +0.60%. His mantra was to lower your costs through index funds and not take actions that might destroy value: “Don’t do something, just stand there!”</p>\n<p>For Scholes, the Perfect Portfolio is about risk management. Your investment success will depend most on avoiding the downside “tail risks,” rare but severe stock market downturns such as the financial crisis of 2007–2009 or the COVID-19 pandemic, while capitalizing on the positive “tail gains.”</p>\n<p>Pay attention to what the derivatives markets such as the VIX volatility index VIX, -1.39% are telling you. For example, when the VIX is at a level below its historical average, you may feel more comfortable investing a greater proportion of your assets in risky stocks.</p>\n<p>For Merton, ultimately, the Perfect Portfolio should be your very own risk-free asset, like the inflation-protected government bond TIPS. For your retirement goal, ideally you would take your savings at retirement, and buy an annuity that would provide a lifetime income to meet your anticipated needs.</p>\n<p>Leibowitz’s Perfect Portfolio is about the amount of risk you can personally bear. Be prepared to try to make some tough judgment calls, and consider all of your circumstances, including potential life events, current taxes and estate taxes. In addition to equities, you should include bonds to reduce its overall volatility. Have a contingency plan to deal with serious adverse events.</p>\n<p>For Shiller, your Perfect Portfolio should be widely diversified, not only across major asset classes, but internationally as well. Place a heavier than typical weight in stocks around the world, where Shiller’s CAPE ratios—that is, cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings ratios—are relatively low.</p>\n<p>For Ellis, one of the original advocates of passive investing, your Perfect Portfolio should of course include index funds, especially if you want to have a good chance of being in the top 20% of funds over the next 20 years. A strong forecast may imply that the company intends to make its new lineup available during the waning days of its fiscal year, while weaker guidance could suggest the launch will be pushed in to the calendar fourth quarter.</p>\n<p>The problem this time around is that Apple has held off on issuing a formal outlook for more than a year amid the pandemic, and it remains unclear when or if the company will resume the practice. Apple has instead been offering \"directional insights\" to offer some indication of how its results could stack up to those of prior quarters, but it has been notoriously tight-lipped about plans for iPhone launches.</p>\n<p>\"We expect the timing of iPhone 13 availability will ultimately prove to be the swing factor in [the fiscal fourth quarter], thus we anticipate the company will provide more granular directional commentary,\" wrote Monness, Crespi, Hardt &amp; Co. analyst Brian White.</p>\n<p>The coming launch is of keen interest given that the current lineup has performed well. \"The iPhone 12 cycle has been strong but we believe the next two cycles may prove challenging with units potentially down [year over year] in FY22 and FY23,\" wrote Barclays analyst Tim Long.</p>\n<p>The June quarter that Apple will report Tuesday is traditionally a slower <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a>, as consumers wait for the next iPhone launch, but the company is still expected to deliver big growth in its smartphone business. Not only does the company have the benefit of easy comparisons to the early days of the pandemic, but it should also be reaping the rewards of an unusually promotional wireless industry.</p>\n<p><b>What to watch for</b></p>\n<p><b>Earnings:</b> Analysts tracked by FactSet expect Apple to post $1.01 in earnings per share, up from 65 cents a year earlier. According to Estimize, which crowdsources projections from hedge funds, academics, and others, the average expectation is for $1.16 a share in EPS.</p>\n<p><b>Revenue: </b>The FactSet consensus calls for $73.26 billion in overall revenue, up from $59.69 billion a year prior. On Estimize, the average estimate is for $77.38 billion.</p>\n<p>On a segment level, analysts surveyed by FactSet project $34.19 billion in iPhone revenue, $7.17 billion in iPad revenue, $7.86 billion in Mac revenue, $16.26 billion in services revenue, and $7.83 billion in revenue for the wearables, home, and accessories category.</p>\n<p><b>Stock movement: </b>Apple shares have fallen after four of the past five earnings reports, though the stock is up 60% over the past 12 months as the Dow Jones Industrial Average has increased 32%.</p>\n<p>Of the 44 analysts tracked by FactSet who cover Apple's stock, 33 have buy ratings, nine have hold ratings and two have sell ratings, with an average price target of $157.88.</p>\n<p><b>What else to watch for</b></p>\n<p>Apple's iPhone business is set up for its second-largest rate of growth in at least three years, behind only what was seen in the previous quarter. Analysts tracked by FactSet are calling for $34.2 billion in iPhone revenue, up 29.4% from a year earlier.</p>\n<p>Some encouraging signals came from Verizon Communications Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/VZ\">$(VZ)$</a>, which recently ran a big iPhone promotion as it sought to match discounts at rival AT&amp;T Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/T\">$(T)$</a></p>\n<p>\"Momentum built throughout the quarter, and we timed our promotions to take full advantage of the economic recovery and increased customer activity,\" Verizon Chief Financial Officer Matthew Ellis said on his company's earnings call. About 20% of Verizon's consumer base is now using 5G-enabled phones .</p>\n<p>Raymond James analyst Chris Caso noted that the quantity of upgrades might not even be the most important factor, as his analysis of iPhone carrier deals from last year found that they can be helpful in driving a greater \"mix\" of more expensive devices.</p>\n<p>\"Consumers appear to have been willing to pay the few dollars per month to upgrade to higher-end models, if the base model was offered for free,\" he wrote, based on analyzing last year's subsidies.</p>\n<p>UBS analyst David Vogt is also feeling upbeat about the business heading into the fiscal third-quarter report, pointing to positive signs in the telecommunications industry like the \"aggressive promotions\" and improving retail traffic at wireless stores.</p>\n<p>But he notes that demand may not be the big issue for Apple, as the company's overall upside is \"gated\" due to supply constraints plaguing the broader electronics industry and beyond. Assuming I'm right,&nbsp;<b>BioNTech</b> (NASDAQ:BNTX) should soar if the market crashes.</p>\n<p>A massive market sell-off due to COVID-19 worries would almost certainly light a fire beneath the stocks of the leading vaccine makers. My view is that BioNTech would be <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the biggest winners in the group.</p>\n<p>BioNTech and its partner <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PFE\">Pfizer</a></b> (NYSE:PFE) are already moving forward with plans to test a vaccine that specifically targets the delta variant. That gives the companies a head start. BioNTech is by far the smallest of the companies with COVID-19 vaccines already on the market, which makes its shares more likely to jump higher on a positive catalyst. It's also easily the cheapest of these vaccine stocks, based on forward earnings multiples.</p>\n<p>What if there isn't an imminent market crash? BioNTech is still set to rake in billions of dollars with sales of its COVID-19 vaccine. The company will almost certainly use its growing cash stockpile to invest in expanding its pipeline. I think that BioNTech will be a winner over the long term, regardless of what happens over the short term.</p>\n<h3><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DG\">Dollar General</a></h3>\n<p>I've maintained for a long time that&nbsp;<b>Dollar <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BGC\">General</a></b> (NYSE:DG) is one of the best stocks to own during a market downturn. That view seemed to be confirmed during the big market meltdown last year.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b0e75aa27d2d22b4296c80687da5be97\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"449\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>DG data by YCharts.</p>\n<p>Shares of Dollar General fell at first, but not nearly as much as most stocks did. Dollar General stock also rebounded much more quickly and trounced the overall market's return throughout the rest of the year.</p>\n<p>During uncertain times, consumers tighten their purse strings. That makes discount retailers such as Dollar General more attractive than ever.</p>\n<p>Even when the overall market performs well, though, Dollar General should still be able to grow. As a case in point, the company's shares delivered more than double the gain that the <b>S&amp;P 500</b> index did in the five years leading up to 2020 when the market was roaring.</p>\n<p>I think that Dollar General will be able to continue to beat the market. It's moving forward with an aggressive expansion strategy. The company is also undertaking a major initiative to \"establish itself as a health destination.\" While Dollar General didn't provide many details on exactly what its plans are, moving more into healthcare sounds like a smart move to me.</p>\n<h3>Viatris</h3>\n<p>There are at least two reasons why a given stock might hold up well during a big market sell-off. One is that its underlying business isn't impacted much by the reason behind the broader plunge. Another is that the stock is so cheap that investors scoop up shares if it falls much below its existing price. My take is that&nbsp;<b>Viatris</b> (NASDAQ:VTRS) qualifies on both of these criteria.</p>\n<p>Viatris specializes in biosimilars and generic drugs. Patients need these drugs, regardless of what the stock market does. The drugs are also less expensive than branded prescription drugs.</p>\n<p>The stock is irrefutably dirt cheap. Viatris' shares trade at a little over four times expected earnings. It's unlikely that the stock is going to move much lower because it would simply be too much of a steal for investors to ignore.</p>\n<p>Granted, Viatris probably won't keep up with the overall stock market's performance if the current uptrend continues. However, the company's dividend is attractive. The Pirates of the Caribbean swashbuckler-heavy boat ride has spawned the most successful theatrical franchise based on a theme park attraction, but Disney hasn't shied away from putting out films titled <i>Country Bear Jamboree</i>, <i>Haunted Mansion</i>, <i>Mission to Mars</i>, and <i><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWR.AU\">Tower</a> of Terro</i>r.</p>\n<p>Some of those flicks aren't particularly watchable, but the synergy is fairly obvious if things click. A blockbuster at the multiplex will draw visitors to Disneyland or Disney World, and the media giant won't have to invest in building a new ride to cash in on a hot movie.</p>\n<p>Next week's <i>Jungle Cruise</i> will be somewhat different. Disney has been investing in updating the attraction on both coasts. It's not necessarily the new film's arrival inspiring the tweaks. We're not getting audio-animatronics of Blunt and The Rock added to the watery attraction. The original Jungle Cruise ride had some elements that don't jibe with the woke new normal, joining Pirates of the Caribbean and eventually Splash Mountain as classic rides that are going for a more socially-aware makeover.</p>\n<p>Disney's ecosystem is difficult to top. It operates the world's most-visited theme parks. In 2019 it put out the country's six highest-grossing films. Its media empire is helmed by <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/01288\">ABC</a>, Disney Channel, and ESPN, and they give the House of Mouse a deep reach into homes. It's not just mere luck that the Disney+ streaming service would go on to top 100 million paying subscribers just months into its second year of availability. Put it all together and Disney is built to cash in on any property that spikes in popularity in any of its operating segments.</p>\n<p>The easiest connection is when Disney has a hit movie, a pond that is well stocked after making 10-figure acquisitions of Marvel, Pixar, and Lucasfilm. Lucasfilm's <i>Star Wars</i> is the basis of themed lands at Disney's theme parks in Florida and California; it's the series that put Disney+ on the map, and a <i>Star Wars</i>-themed luxury escapism hotel will open next year at Disney World.</p>\n<p>The new <i>Behind the Attraction</i>&nbsp;show on Disney+ is smart. It gives the bellwether media stock promotional material that it can push out as content for the fast-growing service. If <i>Jungle Cruise</i> is a hit, it will be even smarter, especially if it's successful enough to warrant sequels that will keep demand humming for the theme park experience as well as incremental merchandising opportunities. The film, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, is named and themed loosely for the classic pun-laden Disneyland boat ride.\n\nImage source: Disney.\nBehind the scenes\nThis isn't the first time Disney has leaned on an iconic in-park experience as a content creator. The Pirates of the Caribbean swashbuckler-heavy boat ride has spawned the most successful theatrical franchise based on a theme park attraction, but Disney hasn't shied away from putting out films titled Country Bear Jamboree, Haunted Mansion, Mission to Mars, and Tower of Terror.\nSome of those flicks aren't particularly watchable, but the synergy is fairly obvious if things click. A blockbuster at the multiplex will draw visitors to Disneyland or Disney World, and the media giant won't have to invest in building a new ride to cash in on a hot movie.\nNext week's Jungle Cruise will be somewhat different. Disney has been investing in updating the attraction on both coasts. It's not necessarily the new film's arrival inspiring the tweaks. We're not getting audio-animatronics of Blunt and The Rock added to the watery attraction. The original Jungle Cruise ride had some elements that don't jibe with the woke new normal, joining Pirates of the Caribbean and eventually Splash Mountain as classic rides that are going for a more socially-aware makeover.\nDisney's ecosystem is difficult to top. It operates the world's most-visited theme parks. In 2019 it put out the country's six highest-grossing films. Its media empire is helmed by ABC, Disney Channel, and ESPN, and they give the House of Mouse a deep reach into homes. It's not just mere luck that the Disney+ streaming service would go on to top 100 million paying subscribers just months into its second year of availability. Put it all together and Disney is built to cash in on any property that spikes in popularity in any of its operating segments.\nThe easiest connection is when Disney has a hit movie, a pond that is well stocked after making 10-figure acquisitions of Marvel, Pixar, and Lucasfilm. My view is that BioNTech would be <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the biggest winners in the group.</p>\n<p>BioNTech and its partner <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PFE\">Pfizer</a></b> (NYSE:PFE) are already moving forward with plans to test a vaccine that specifically targets the delta variant. That gives the companies a head start. BioNTech is by far the smallest of the companies with COVID-19 vaccines already on the market, which makes its shares more likely to jump higher on a positive catalyst. It's also easily the cheapest of these vaccine stocks, based on forward earnings multiples.</p>\n<p>What if there isn't an imminent market crash? BioNTech is still set to rake in billions of dollars with sales of its COVID-19 vaccine. The company will almost certainly use its growing cash stockpile to invest in expanding its pipeline. I think that BioNTech will be a winner over the long term, regardless of what happens over the short term.</p>\n<h3><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DG\">Dollar General</a></h3>\n<p>I've maintained for a long time that&nbsp;<b>Dollar <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BGC\">General</a></b> (NYSE:DG) is one of the best stocks to own during a market downturn. That view seemed to be confirmed during the big market meltdown last year.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b0e75aa27d2d22b4296c80687da5be97\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"449\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>DG data by YCharts.</p>\n<p>Shares of Dollar General fell at first, but not nearly as much as most stocks did. Dollar General stock also rebounded much more quickly and trounced the overall market's return throughout the rest of the year.</p>\n<p>During uncertain times, consumers tighten their purse strings. That makes discount retailers such as Dollar General more attractive than ever.</p>\n<p>Even when the overall market performs well, though, Dollar General should still be able to grow. As a case in point, the company's shares delivered more than double the gain that the <b>S&amp;P 500</b> index did in the five years leading up to 2020 when the market was roaring.</p>\n<p>I think that Dollar General will be able to continue to beat the market. It's moving forward with an aggressive expansion strategy. The company is also undertaking a major initiative to \"establish itself as a health destination.\" While Dollar General didn't provide many details on exactly what its plans are, moving more into healthcare sounds like a smart move to me.</p>\n<h3>Viatris</h3>\n<p>There are at least two reasons why a given stock might hold up well during a big market sell-off. One is that its underlying business isn't impacted much by the reason behind the broader plunge. Another is that the stock is so cheap that investors scoop up shares if it falls much below its existing price. My take is that&nbsp;<b>Viatris</b> (NASDAQ:VTRS) qualifies on both of these criteria.</p>\n<p>Viatris specializes in biosimilars and generic drugs. Patients need these drugs, regardless of what the stock market does. The drugs are also less expensive than branded prescription drugs.</p>\n<p>The stock is irrefutably dirt cheap.
