All eyes will therefore be on its upcoming Sept. 22 fiscal Q2 earnings release. Investors will want to see if revenue is growing and the company achieves positive FCF.</p>\n<p>For example, last quarter ending May 31 revenue fell by 15.5% year-over-year (YOY) from $206 million last year to $174 million this quarter. In fact, it was also down by 17.1% from the prior quarter as well.</p>\n<p>That is almost like a curse for a stock like Blackberry. Investors and analysts want to see positive growth on a steady YoY and quarter-over-quarter (QOQ) basis. This probably explains why the stock fell so much.</p>\n<p><b>Where This Leaves BlackBerry</b></p>\n<p>Last year BlackBerry produced $893 million in revenue, but for this fiscal year ending May 2022 analysts still see lower sales at $781.6 million. However, they also expect a recovery by May 2023 to $954.1 million. But is the market willing to wait until then? That is why the upcoming fiscal Q2 2022 earnings release will be so important. Investors want to see if the company is back on a growth track.</p>\n<p>If it is, then the likelihood that it can produce positive free cash flow for the year will increase, and this will help BB stock recover.</p>\n<p>For example, as I pointed out in my last article, BlackBerry reported FCF during Q4 of $49 million. This was a huge 23.33% of its $210 million in revenue during the quarter. Assuming it can pull off the same thing next year the company could make $222.3 million in FCF that year. That is based on 23.33% of sales of $954.1 million.</p>\n<p>However, to be more conservative let’s assume that it can only make half of that or an 11.5% FCF margin. That lowers its forecast FCF to $109.7 million. Moreover, its present value using a 10% discount rate and a year and a half in the future is 86.68% times this FCF number. That lowers it to $95.1 million.</p>\n<p><b>What BlackBerry Stock Could Be Worth</b></p>\n<p>If we use an FCF yield of between 1% we can calculate the company’s ongoing value. This is calculated by dividing the free cash flow estimates by its FCF yield ratio.</p>\n<p>For example, using $95.1 million in FCF forecast for Blackberry in 2023 brings its value to $9.51 billion. This is 55.7% over today’s market value for Blackberry of $6.109 billion.</p>\n<p>And if we use a 1.5% FCF yield, the target market value falls to $6.34 billion (i.e., $95.1/0.015=$6.34b). That is just 3.78% over today’s price.</p>\n<p>Therefore, BB stock has a target value between 3.78% and 55.7% over today’s price. The average is 29.74%, or basically 30% over today’s price of $10.73. That puts its value at $13.95 per share (estimate rounded to $14).</p>\n<p><b>What to do With BB Stock</b></p>\n<p>Analysts are not very positive about BB stock. For example, seven analysts surveyed by Refinitiv (reported by&nbsp;<i>Yahoo! Finance</i>) have an average target price of $8.36. That implies a potential drop of 22% from today’s price.</p>\n<p>Another survey by&nbsp;<i>TipRanks.com</i>&nbsp;says that four analysts have an&nbsp;average price of $9.50or 11.5% below today’s price. However, nine Wall Street analysts surveyed by&nbsp;<i>Seeking Alpha</i>&nbsp;have an&nbsp;average target of $8.19, or 23.7% below today.</p>\n<p>So the average of all three of these surveys is a price of $8.68, or 19% lower. I would not be too bothered by this though. In fact, it was also down by 17.1% from the prior quarter as well.</p>\n<p>That is almost like a curse for a stock like Blackberry. Investors and analysts want to see positive growth on a steady YoY and quarter-over-quarter (QOQ) basis. This probably explains why the stock fell so much.</p>\n<p><b>Where This Leaves BlackBerry</b></p>\n<p>Last year BlackBerry produced $893 million in revenue, but for this fiscal year ending May 2022 analysts still see lower sales at $781.6 million. However, they also expect a recovery by May 2023 to $954.1 million. But is the market willing to wait until then? That is why the upcoming fiscal Q2 2022 earnings release will be so important. Investors want to see if the company is back on a growth track.</p>\n<p>If it is, then the likelihood that it can produce positive free cash flow for the year will increase, and this will help BB stock recover.</p>\n<p>For example, as I pointed out in my last article, BlackBerry reported FCF during Q4 of $49 million. This was a huge 23.33% of its $210 million in revenue during the quarter. Assuming it can pull off the same thing next year the company could make $222.3 million in FCF that year. That is based on 23.33% of sales of $954.1 million.</p>\n<p>However, to be more conservative let’s assume that it can only make half of that or an 11.5% FCF margin. That lowers its forecast FCF to $109.7 million. Moreover, its present value using a 10% discount rate and a year and a half in the future is 86.68% times this FCF number. That lowers it to $95.1 million.</p>\n<p><b>What BlackBerry Stock Could Be Worth</b></p>\n<p>If we use an FCF yield of between 1% we can calculate the company’s ongoing value. This is calculated by dividing the free cash flow estimates by its FCF yield ratio.</p>\n<p>For example, using $95.1 million in FCF forecast for Blackberry in 2023 brings its value to $9.51 billion. This is 55.7% over today’s market value for Blackberry of $6.109 billion.</p>\n<p>And if we use a 1.5% FCF yield, the target market value falls to $6.34 billion (i.e., $95.1/0.015=$6.34b). That is just 3.78% over today’s price.</p>\n<p>Therefore, BB stock has a target value between 3.78% and 55.7% over today’s price. The average is 29.74%, or basically 30% over today’s price of $10.73. That puts its value at $13.95 per share (estimate rounded to $14).</p>\n<p><b>What to do With BB Stock</b></p>\n<p>Analysts are not very positive about BB stock. For example, seven analysts surveyed by Refinitiv (reported by&nbsp;<i>Yahoo! Finance</i>) have an average target price of $8.36. That implies a potential drop of 22% from today’s price.</p>\n<p>Another survey by&nbsp;<i>TipRanks.com</i>&nbsp;says that four analysts have an&nbsp;average price of $9.50or 11.5% below today’s price. However, nine Wall Street analysts surveyed by&nbsp;<i>Seeking Alpha</i>&nbsp;have an&nbsp;average target of $8.19, or 23.7% below today.</p>\n<p>So the average of all three of these surveys is a price of $8.68, or 19% lower. I would not be too bothered by this though. Meanwhile, capital expenditures increased 21% to $189 billion, which is still down 3% from the final three months of 2019 before the pandemic shutdown the economy.</p>\n<p>“Borrowing is inexpensive for corporations right now, so financing their capital spending was expected -- but those expectations still haven’t been met,” Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&amp;P Dow Jones Indices, said in an interview. “Part of the reason could be related to the pandemic, as a shift in consumer demand has fueled lots of uncertainty for businesses and makes it difficult for companies to plan ahead.”</p>\n<p>Companies typically ramp up spending on factories, equipment and other capital goods as they grow more confident in their financial outlook and the economy. Given uncertainties about the outlook, buybacks have been a way for businesses to return cash to shareholders and have helped propel U.S. stock indexes climbing to multiple records this year.</p>\n<p>Markets have also benefited from the monetary and fiscal support that the Federal Reserve and policy makers in Washington put in place to help support the economy in the pandemic.</p>\n<p>Apple Inc., Google parent Alphabet Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc. (formerly know as Facebook) were the biggest buyers of their own stock in the third quarter, repurchasing a total of $48.1 billion shares, according to S&amp;P Dow Jones Indices. Total buybacks surpassed the previous record of $223 billion set in the fourth quarter of 2018, the data show.</p>\n<p>While buybacks surge, robust capital investment will be key to&nbsp;the long-term economic recovery&nbsp;after the spending boost from business reopenings and fiscal stimulus fades. The authorized funds can be used over a two-year period to buy back shares.</p>\n<p>Actually, Moderna has invested and will invest a lot more than just $1 billion in its business. CFO David Meline noted in the company's Q2 conference call that Moderna more than tripled its research and development spending year over year in the first half of 2021. He said to expect significantly increased R&amp;D investments going forward.</p>\n<p>In addition, Moderna plans to make between $450 million and $550 million this year in capital investments. These investments include a major expansion of capacity to be able to manufacture up to 3 billion doses of its COVID-19 vaccine in 2022. The company is also investing in technology improvements and beefing up its global commercial operations.</p>\n<h2>Why buy back shares?</h2>\n<p>Probably the most important reason why Moderna is preparing to invest so much in itself is that the company's management team is very confident in its business prospects. CEO Stéphane Bancel said in the Q2 call, \"We are very optimistic about the future of Moderna and we are just getting started.\"</p>\n<p>Another reason why Moderna is ready to spend up to $1 billion in stock buybacks is that it's likely going to have more cash than it knows what to do with. The company ended the second quarter with a cash stockpile of $12.2 billion. That amount will almost certainly continue to grow.</p>\n<p>Moderna expects to rake in $20 billion in sales from its COVID-19 vaccine this year. It already has advance purchase agreements worth $12 billion plus another $8 billion in options for next year.</p>\n<p>Repurchasing shares is actually Moderna's third investment priority. The company first wants to reinvest in its base business, which includes the aforementioned increased R&amp;D and capital spending. Moderna also is interested in expanding its pipeline through business development, deals including licensing and acquisitions.</p>\n<p>Moderna's board seems to think that the company will still have plenty of money left over after investing in those two top priorities. Based on the company's revenue projections, it should easily be able to spare $1 billion for stock buybacks.</p>\n<h2>A good bet?</h2>\n<p>Just because Moderna <i>can</i> spend $1 billion on share repurchases doesn't mean that it <i>should</i> do so. I don't think Moderna should make that $1 billion bet in buying back shares.&nbsp;My view is that stock buybacks at Moderna's current valuation (or anywhere close to it) would be ill-advised.</p>\n<p>Of course, Moderna could wait to buy back shares only on pullbacks.&nbsp;However, unless its shares plunge significantly, I think that Moderna would better serve its shareholders by making a strategic acquisition with the $1 billion than buying its own richly priced shares.</p>\n<p>The company needs to be able to generate growth after the worst of the pandemic ends.
