Could analyst Dan Ives be right that Apple stock and some of its peers have bottomed for the year?</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fd834b5930cc8484f73b322c50b95c91\" tg-width=\"1240\" tg-height=\"827\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Figure 1: Apple Stock: Bright Green Light To Buy, Says One Analyst</span></p><p><b>Interest rate hikes underway</b></p><p>Mr. Ives’ key catalyst this week has been the Federal Reserve’s announcement on monetary policy. In a move that has been widely anticipated, the US central bank is raising short-term interest rates by 25 basis points. Six more hikes are expected in 2022.</p><p>I explained yesterday that the bullish reaction to the rate bump can be counterintuitive. Shouldn’t higher interest be a drag for tech and growth stocks?</p><p>The key here is that the markets do not usually react to what is happening right at this moment. Rather, it tends to look forward a few months and anticipate future events.</p><p>Dan Ives seems to agree with me that, rather than causing concern, the start of the rate hike campaign has been felt as a relief. Finally, monetary policy will begin to tighten, and investors can slowly start to worry about something other than rampant inflation.</p><p>This is very much what happened in early November of last year. When the Fed announced the start of the tapering process (that is, the winding down of the Bank’s bond purchase program), the Nasdaq immediately rallied — although enthusiasm lasted barely two months.</p><p>Therefore, yes, I believe that the macroeconomics events of the week were a positive for Apple stock. If “left alone” (i.e., absent market-level shocks and concerns), I think that AAPL share price will tend to rise due to the company’s strong fundamentals and execution.</p><p><b>Has AAPL bottomed?</b></p><p>While I think that Apple stock will be worth much more several years down the road, the harder question to answer is whether shares have seen the worst of 2022.</p><p>Any realistic analyst or investor must leave the door open for further share price weakness. I still think it is a bit too early to say, with much conviction, that the early-year selloff in the markets has completely run its course.</p><p>But here’s one thing that I can do: look at the historical data to understand what could happen next. Barron’s has done some of the work for us.</p><p>According to the publication, citing Dow Jones Market Data in an email that landed in my inbox last evening:</p><blockquote>“The start of a Fed tightening is not necessarily bad for stocks. There have been five rate-raising cycles since 1990, and the major stock indexes ended<i>higher</i>a year after the first rate increase 80% of the time.”</blockquote><p>In isolation, this figure is not particularly impressive, since the S&amp;P 500 has produced positive returns for the year 80% of the time in the past 3 decades. But at least, the observation suggests that recent rate hikes have not been any more likely to drag the performance of the stock market.</p><p>I then looked at Apple stock itself. Keep in mind that AAPL dropped as much as 17% from its all-time high, with the YTD bottom being reached as recently as March 14.</p><p>In the iPhone era, i.e. since 2007, Apple shares dropped at least this much a few times: certainly during the Great Recession of 2008, but also in 2013-2014, 2017-2018, and during the more recent COVID-19 bear market.</p><p>Whenever a 17%-plus selloff happened, Apple managed to produce outstanding average returns of 56% one year later! When the Fed announced the start of the tapering process (that is, the winding down of the Bank’s bond purchase program), the Nasdaq immediately rallied — although enthusiasm lasted barely two months.Therefore, yes, I believe that the macroeconomics events of the week were a positive for Apple stock. If “left alone” (i.e., absent market-level shocks and concerns), I think that AAPL share price will tend to rise due to the company’s strong fundamentals and execution.Has AAPL bottomed?While I think that Apple stock will be worth much more several years down the road, the harder question to answer is whether shares have seen the worst of 2022.Any realistic analyst or investor must leave the door open for further share price weakness. I still think it is a bit too early to say, with much conviction, that the early-year selloff in the markets has completely run its course.But here’s one thing that I can do: look at the historical data to understand what could happen next. Barron’s has done some of the work for us.According to the publication, citing Dow Jones Market Data in an email that landed in my inbox last evening:“The start of a Fed tightening is not necessarily bad for stocks. There have been five rate-raising cycles since 1990, and the major stock indexes endedhighera year after the first rate increase 80% of the time.”In isolation, this figure is not particularly impressive, since the S&P 500 has produced positive returns for the year 80% of the time in the past 3 decades. But at least, the observation suggests that recent rate hikes have not been any more likely to drag the performance of the stock market.I then looked at Apple stock itself. Keep in mind that AAPL dropped as much as 17% from its all-time high, with the YTD bottom being reached as recently as March 14.In the iPhone era, i.e. since 2007, Apple shares dropped at least this much a few times: certainly during the Great Recession of 2008, but also in 2013-2014, 2017-2018, and during the more recent COVID-19 bear market.Whenever a 17%-plus selloff happened, Apple managed to produce outstanding average returns of 56% one year later! Leaders of those organizations learned of the halt in production from New York Times reporters.</p><p>“This is not the time to be switching production lines of anything, when the lives of people across the developing world hang in the balance,” said Dr. Ayoade Alakija, a co-head of the African Union’s vaccine-delivery program.</p><p>Jake Sargent, a spokesman for Johnson &amp; Johnson, said in an email that the company was “focused on ensuring our vaccine is available where people are in need” and that its global production network “is working day and night” to help fight the pandemic.</p><p>He said the company was continuing to deliver batches of the vaccine to facilities that bottled and packaged doses. He also said Johnson &amp; Johnson had millions of finished doses in inventory.</p><p>Johnson &amp; Johnson’s Covid vaccine, initially billed as a single shot, fell out of favor in the United States and other wealthy countries in part because of its link to a rare but dangerous blood-clotting disorder. Studies have found that it performs worse by some measures than the shots from Pfizer and Moderna.</p><p>But poorer countries remain reliant on Johnson &amp; Johnson’s vaccine, which does not require ultracold refrigeration. It has been shown to provide strong and long-lasting protection against severe disease across variants,including Omicron, when given as a two-shot regimen. As a single shot, the vaccine is less expensive and relatively easy to give to hard-to-reach populations.</p><p>“In many low- and middle-income countries, our vaccine is the most important and sometimes only option,” Dr. Penny Heaton, a Johnson &amp; Johnson executive,saidin December at a meeting of experts advising the U.S. government on vaccines. She added, “The world is depending on us.”</p><p>Lower-income countries now have more vaccine options than at any previous point in the pandemic, and the impact of pausing production at the Leiden plant is therefore less severe than it might have been in the past. Some African governments have asked vaccine manufacturers to pause shipments until the countries use what they have on hand. Companies have cited that as evidence that they are providing plenty of vaccines to poorer countries.</p><p>But the reality is more complicated.</p><p>Only about 11 percent of Africans have been fully vaccinated (and few have received boosters). Many countries lack the infrastructure — medical personnel, storage facilities and transportation — to quickly inoculate their populations. The company badly missed that target, releasing roughly 400 million doses, according to a person familiar with the company’s vaccine production.</p><p>Mr. Sargent said the company was continuing to fulfill its contractual obligations to the African Union, which has ordered vaccines on behalf of dozens of countries in Africa and the Caribbean, and to Covax, which buys vaccines for scores of low-income governments.</p><p>But Johnson &amp; Johnson failed to deliver anywhere near as many doses to Covax as it planned. The company said in May that it “aimed to supply” up to 200 million vaccine doses to Covax by the end of last year. Covax got only four million; another 151,000 arrived last month, according to Gavi, the main nonprofit that runs Covax. (Wealthy countries supplemented that with donations.)</p><p>The African Union, which ordered 220 million doses, has fared better. It has been receiving doses on or ahead of schedule, with the bulk of the order due in the next eight months.</p><p>Dr. Seth Berkley, who helps run Covax as the chief executive of Gavi, said the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine had been at the center of the program’s strategy for fighting Covid last year. But because of Johnson &amp; Johnson’s delay in delivering doses, Covax has increasingly looked to other vaccine providers.</p><p>“We really needed their doses in 2021, and we were counting on them,” Dr. Berkley said. “They didn’t deliver. So we had to find other doses to meet the countries’ needs.”</p><p>An African Union official said the bloc was also concerned by the decision to pause production at the Leiden plant because it had been assured that all of its vaccine would come from that facility. The official said Johnson &amp; Johnson’s move raised doubts about whether the bloc would exercise an option to buy an additional 180 million Johnson &amp; Johnson doses.</p><p>Johnson &amp; Johnson has already faced criticism for failing to prioritize people in developing countries for its Covid vaccine. Last summer, the head of the World Health Organization rebuked the companyafter The Times reported that millions of doses that had been bottled in South Africa were being exported for distribution in Europe.</p><p>To make its Covid vaccine, Johnson &amp; Johnson relies on a sprawling international network. In addition to the company-run Leiden facility, factories in India, Baltimore and North Carolina have been hired to make the substance of the vaccine. Emergent, however, failed to meet federal manufacturing standards, and regulators forced the plant to suspend production last April.</p><p>The factory restarted in August, but regulators with the Food and Drug Administration have not yet determined that it can consistently operate in compliance with manufacturing standards, officials said.</p><p>As a result, the F.D.A. has insisted on reviewing individual batches of vaccines before they are shipped to be bottled. Regulators haven’t cleared any batches made since the factory reopened, said Matt Hartwig, a spokesman for Emergent.</p><p>Plans are underway for two other facilities — one a Merck plant in North Carolina, the other run by Biological E in India — to start contributing batches of the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine. But those plants are not yet producing usable vaccine substance and are not expected to do so until late spring.</p><p>The Merck plant — whose participation in the vaccine production the White House last year hailed as a “historic” breakthrough — was supposed to be producing batches as early as last fall. That timeline has since been pushed back to late spring, federal officials said.</p><p>The delays at Merck and Emergent increased the importance of the Leiden plant. After a renovation last year, the facility had the capacity to produce the equivalent of well over 50 million Covid vaccine doses a month, said two people familiar with the matter.</p><p>Unlike companies such as Pfizer and Moderna, which have reaped billions of dollars in profits, Johnson &amp; Johnson did not find the Covid vaccine to be a big moneymaker.</p><p>Johnson &amp; Johnson vowed to sell its vaccine on a not-for-profit basis. Emergent, however, failed to meet federal manufacturing standards, and regulators forced the plant to suspend production last April.The factory restarted in August, but regulators with the Food and Drug Administration have not yet determined that it can consistently operate in compliance with manufacturing standards, officials said.As a result, the F.D.A. has insisted on reviewing individual batches of vaccines before they are shipped to be bottled. Regulators haven’t cleared any batches made since the factory reopened, said Matt Hartwig, a spokesman for Emergent.Plans are underway for two other facilities — one a Merck plant in North Carolina, the other run by Biological E in India — to start contributing batches of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. But those plants are not yet producing usable vaccine substance and are not expected to do so until late spring.The Merck plant — whose participation in the vaccine production the White House last year hailed as a “historic” breakthrough — was supposed to be producing batches as early as last fall. This year, Wall Street professionals are watching them closely.</p><p>Fund managers who might have once derided small-time day traders as “dumb money” are scouring social-media posts for clues about where the herd might veer next. Some 85% of hedge funds and 42% of asset managers are now tracking retail-trading message boards, according to a survey by Bloomberg Intelligence.</p><p>JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. in September introduced a new data product that includes information on which securities individual investors are likely buying and selling, as well as which sectors and stocks are being talked about on social media. About 50 clients, including some of the largest asset and quant managers, are testing the product, the bank says. JPMorgan equity traders are also using it to help manage their own risk.</p><p>“The flow from retail is not something you can ignore if you are a professional investor,” says Chris Berthe, JPMorgan’s global co-head of cash equities trading. “It’s a whole new investor class that has emerged, and it’s an investor class that’s actually getting themes right.”</p><p>The shift illustrates just how much the rookies have changed the investing landscape. A year ago, market observers were questioning if the retail revolution would continue. Now many are asking what it will look like this year.</p><p>After shying away from active investing for much of the past decade, millions of Americans, hunkered down at home because of Covid-19, became day traders in 2020. Enticed by volatile markets and phone apps that made it free to trade stocks, they flocked to social media for investing ideas. That year, they piled into stocks like Hertz Global Holdings Inc. (and ultimately were rewarded when the car-rental company exited bankruptcy). It is estimated that more than 10 million individual investors opened new brokerage accounts in 2020, according to Devin Ryan, director of financial-technology research at JMP Securities.</p><p><b>Avoiding Crowds</b></p><p>The total number of stocks with at least $10 million in short interest rose last year, but the number of the most heavily shorted stocks declined.</p><p>Last year the trends from 2020 accelerated. JMP Securities estimates that a further 15 million Americans signed up for brokerage accounts in 2021. Social-media forums became increasingly used for trading. Some individual investors used their growing numbers to send stocks including GameStop Corp. and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. flying. Many newbies relished in inflicting steep losses on some hedge funds and demonstrating that traditional playbooks aren’t the only way to win.</p><p>Investments that made little sense on paper became valuable in 2021 because day traders declared them so. Joke cryptocurrencies such as dogecoin—up more than 1,900% in the past year based on late Friday levels—minted self-proclaimed millionaires. A market for nonfungible tokens (NFTs), or digital images of items such as bored-ape avatars, exploded.</p><p>JPMorgan estimates that individual investors accounted for more than a third of daily trading activity several times over the past 18 months, reaching nearly 40% of shares traded on peak days.</p><p>To be sure, many of the newbies lost money. Some took on debt without understanding what they were doing, leaving them vulnerable to steep losses when stock prices fell. Riskier investing strategies, including options trading, exploded. Many amateur investors bought into buzzy shares near the top of rallies, only to watch the prices rapidly plummet.</p><p>Individual traders in 2021 purchased a net $292 billion of U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds, according to Vanda Research’s VandaTrack platform, which tracks and sells data on the purchases of U.S. equities by individual investors. That is more than seven times the amount in 2019. Individual investors so far appear poised to continue similar levels of buying activity in 2022.</p><p>Analysts expect a bumpier road ahead for U.S. stocks this year, and some money managers believe that any prolonged volatility could wash individual investors out of the market. Many say that today’s activity resembles the late 1990s, when individual investors piled into trading only to flee when the dot-com bubble burst.</p><p>So far, individual investors have shown a strong stomach for bumpy days. Last year, the group’s eight largest buying days by dollar volume occurred when the S&amp;P 500 sank 1.3% or more, VandaTrack data show. Several academic papers have found that individual investors have at times helped stabilize markets, providing liquidity in times of volatility.</p><p><b>The big names notice</b></p><p>By some accounts, the newbie investors have already altered some professional investors’ trading strategies. One way in particular: the way some make bearish bets.</p><p>Meme stocks like GameStop had high levels of short interest before they caught the attention of Reddit traders. That means that other investors—usually professionals, like hedge funds—were betting those stocks would fall. When shorting a stock, an investor borrows shares of a company and sells them, hoping to buy them back later at a lower price.</p><p>When the amateurs sent GameStop and other stocks soaring, the short sellers were sometimes forced to buy back shares, often at much higher prices.</p><p>These days, investors are avoiding taking big chances with their short-selling plays, according to an analysis by Ihor Dusaniwsky. He is head of predictive analytics at S3 Partners, a technology and data analytics firm that closely tracks activity by short sellers.</p><p>Just seven stocks in the U.S. market had short interest of 40% or more at the end of 2021, according to his analysis of stocks where at least $10 million of shares had been sold short. That was down from 40 stocks at the beginning of January 2020 and 19 stocks in January 2021. This year, Wall Street professionals are watching them closely.Fund managers who might have once derided small-time day traders as “dumb money” are scouring social-media posts for clues about where the herd might veer next. Some 85% of hedge funds and 42% of asset managers are now tracking retail-trading message boards, according to a survey by Bloomberg Intelligence.JPMorgan Chase & Co. in September introduced a new data product that includes information on which securities individual investors are likely buying and selling, as well as which sectors and stocks are being talked about on social media. About 50 clients, including some of the largest asset and quant managers, are testing the product, the bank says. JPMorgan equity traders are also using it to help manage their own risk.“The flow from retail is not something you can ignore if you are a professional investor,” says Chris Berthe, JPMorgan’s global co-head of cash equities trading. “It’s a whole new investor class that has emerged, and it’s an investor class that’s actually getting themes right.”The shift illustrates just how much the rookies have changed the investing landscape. A year ago, market observers were questioning if the retail revolution would continue. Now many are asking what it will look like this year.After shying away from active investing for much of the past decade, millions of Americans, hunkered down at home because of Covid-19, became day traders in 2020. Enticed by volatile markets and phone apps that made it free to trade stocks, they flocked to social media for investing ideas. That year, they piled into stocks like Hertz Global Holdings Inc. (and ultimately were rewarded when the car-rental company exited bankruptcy). It is estimated that more than 10 million individual investors opened new brokerage accounts in 2020, according to Devin Ryan, director of financial-technology research at JMP Securities.Avoiding CrowdsThe total number of stocks with at least $10 million in short interest rose last year, but the number of the most heavily shorted stocks declined.Last year the trends from 2020 accelerated. JMP Securities estimates that a further 15 million Americans signed up for brokerage accounts in 2021. Social-media forums became increasingly used for trading. Some individual investors used their growing numbers to send stocks including GameStop Corp. and AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. flying. Many newbies relished in inflicting steep losses on some hedge funds and demonstrating that traditional playbooks aren’t the only way to win.Investments that made little sense on paper became valuable in 2021 because day traders declared them so. Joke cryptocurrencies such as dogecoin—up more than 1,900% in the past year based on late Friday levels—minted self-proclaimed millionaires. A market for nonfungible tokens (NFTs), or digital images of items such as bored-ape avatars, exploded.JPMorgan estimates that individual investors accounted for more than a third of daily trading activity several times over the past 18 months, reaching nearly 40% of shares traded on peak days.To be sure, many of the newbies lost money. Some took on debt without understanding what they were doing, leaving them vulnerable to steep losses when stock prices fell. Riskier investing strategies, including options trading, exploded. Many amateur investors bought into buzzy shares near the top of rallies, only to watch the prices rapidly plummet.Individual traders in 2021 purchased a net $292 billion of U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds, according to Vanda Research’s VandaTrack platform, which tracks and sells data on the purchases of U.S. equities by individual investors. That is more than seven times the amount in 2019. Individual investors so far appear poised to continue similar levels of buying activity in 2022.Analysts expect a bumpier road ahead for U.S. stocks this year, and some money managers believe that any prolonged volatility could wash individual investors out of the market. Many say that today’s activity resembles the late 1990s, when individual investors piled into trading only to flee when the dot-com bubble burst.So far, individual investors have shown a strong stomach for bumpy days. Last year, the group’s eight largest buying days by dollar volume occurred when the S&P 500 sank 1.3% or more, VandaTrack data show. Several academic papers have found that individual investors have at times helped stabilize markets, providing liquidity in times of volatility.The big names noticeBy some accounts, the newbie investors have already altered some professional investors’ trading strategies. One way in particular: the way some make bearish bets.Meme stocks like GameStop had high levels of short interest before they caught the attention of Reddit traders. That means that other investors—usually professionals, like hedge funds—were betting those stocks would fall. When shorting a stock, an investor borrows shares of a company and sells them, hoping to buy them back later at a lower price.When the amateurs sent GameStop and other stocks soaring, the short sellers were sometimes forced to buy back shares, often at much higher prices.These days, investors are avoiding taking big chances with their short-selling plays, according to an analysis by Ihor Dusaniwsky. He is head of predictive analytics at S3 Partners, a technology and data analytics firm that closely tracks activity by short sellers.Just seven stocks in the U.S. market had short interest of 40% or more at the end of 2021, according to his analysis of stocks where at least $10 million of shares had been sold short. That was down from 40 stocks at the beginning of January 2020 and 19 stocks in January 2021.
