Reserve wi","content":"

Goldman Sachs Group Inc.’s economists joined Wall Street peers in forecasting the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates more aggressively than they previously expected.

Economists led by Jan Hatzius now predict the Fed will lift its near zero benchmark by 25 basis points five times this year rather than on four occasions. Although no one can predict when that will happen, a 10% drop occurs about once every two years. That's why I'm highlighting five high-quality companies to buy if the most recent swoon persists.
\n
I can't tell you where Adobe(NASDAQ:ADBE),Markel(NYSE:MKL),Take Two Interactive Software(NASDAQ:TTWO),Vertex Pharmaceuticals(NASDAQ:VRTX), and BostonBeer(NYSE:SAM)will trade next week or next month. But I'm confident they will significantly outperform the market over the next three-plus years. Here's why.
\n
Adobe
\n
At a market capitalization of $300 billion, Adobe is one of the largest software companies in the world. Its applications are the backbone of a lot of the content creative professionals produce. Through the years, it has also given them the ability to manage, measure, and monetize their output. The company breaks its results into three categories.
\n
Digital media encompasses the company's creative cloud offering. It's a subscription service that houses applications for virtually anyone creating or delivering content. The digital experience segment is a cloud platform that helps companies deliver the most engaging customer experiences. It provides everything from marketing management and automation to digital commerce and predictive analytics. Finally, its publishing and advertising division contains legacy products in addition to its advertising cloud offerings.
\n
The business has performed amazingly well. Over the past decade, sales and free cash flow have grown 241% and 281%, respectively. Through the first nine months of its fiscal 2021, it posted revenue of $11.7 billion. That was up 24% from the same period last year and 43% over 2019. It carries little debt and its return on invested capital is 33%. That's slightly better thanMicrosoft.
\n
CEO Shantanu Narayen sees strength across the business and believes the digital transformation will power the company's financial performance even while it invests in what it calls \"massive market opportunities.\" There is no question the runway is long. That's why I believe any significant sell-off is a gift to investors. Take advantage if you get it andbuy shares of Adobe.
\n
Markel
\n
Markel has been called the \"baby Berkshire\" for its resemblance to Berkshire Hathaway. It is also an insurance company that uses some of its float -- premiums collected on policies that haven't been paid out in claims -- to invest in stocks and buy businesses. It also manages those businesses in a similar way, treating its holding period as forever.
\n
One big difference is that Markel is only a $16.5 billion company. That gives it more flexibility in what it can buy and offers the potential for decades of steady, market-beating returns for shareholders. Want proof? Would it surprise you to find out Markel's stock has outperformed Berkshire Hathaway since 1990? It has.
\n
MKLDATA BYYCHARTS
\n
At less than 37 times the size of Warren Buffett's behemoth, Markel still has an almost limitless opportunity to employ the same model. It might not be an exciting technology stock or double your investment over a short time, but it is a proven market-beating company that can add ballast to a portfolio. If you get a chance to add shares during a sell-off, take it.
\n
Take Two Interactive
\n
Take Two has one of the most popular video game franchises of all time --Grand Theft Auto. As of last year, the fifth installment in the series --GTA V-- was the third-best-selling video game ever. It trailed onlyMinecraftandTetris. Want more proof? It tookGTA Vthree days to reach $1 billion in sales. That's more than five times faster than the closest video game, the best-performingHarry Pottermovie, andAvatar. And the company has more in its stable.
\n
Another of its popular games -- theNBA2Kseries -- is also praised for both its polish and commercial success. But what excites me about Take Two is what those games have in common. They both offer an immersive experience in a virtual world where the possibilities seem endless. As talk of a metaverse becomes more mainstream, the company has already proven it can create engaging virtual worlds where users participate in crafting their own experience, as well as the experience of others. It has set the company apart financially.
\n
Since 2012, sales have grown 308%. That compares favorably toActivision Blizzard's 70% andElectronic Arts' 36%. Of course, those publishers were already more established. Still, it helps highlight why I think Take Two is the game maker to buy in a market sell-off.
\n
EA REVENUE (ANNUAL)DATA BYYCHARTS
\n
Vertex Pharmaceuticals
\n
Some drugmakers have a portfolio of treatments across many disease areas. Others focus on one type of ailment and work to dominate the space. That's how Vertex has built a market capitalization of $48 billion and annual revenue of $6.7 billion. The company has four approved drugs for cystic fibrosis -- a disease that causes mucus to build up in organs -- and treats roughly half of the 83,000 patients in the U.S., Europe, Australia, and Canada.
\n
Management believes it can treat an additional 30,000 of those patients by successfully commercializing drugs in markets where it recently gained approval, obtaining approval in new markets, and rolling out its newest CF drug in the U.S. and Europe.
\n
It has also partnered with other biotechs to maintain its position in CF and explore new growth opportunities. It spent $900 million to purchase a controlling interest in CTX001 -- its collaboration withCRISPR Therapeutics-- for treating sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia. The company also has a non-opioid pain treatment, a drug targeting kidney disease, and a stem cell-derived therapy for type 1 diabetes in clinical trials. Vertex also has pre-clinical gene-based programs withModernaand Arbor Biotechnologies. It's a robust pipeline with a lot of potential.
\n
Despite that, Wall Street isn't giving the company a lot of credit. Itsprice-to-sales ratiois the lowest it has been since 2012 -- the year it began selling its first CF drug. Analysts expect sales to climb this year and next, making the discount even more pronounced. With a strong foundation in CF and so much potential in the pipeline, Vertex Pharmaceuticals might already be a steal.
\n
Boston Beer
\n
Riding the trends in the alcoholic beverage industry is like being on a rollercoaster. Tastes in the U.S. have shifted over the years with wine, whiskey, hard cider, craft beers, and hard seltzer each taking a turn as the drink of choice. For the most part, Boston Beer has been able to succeed no matter what was in vogue. But it's been an up and down journey for shareholders. The stock has experienced drops of at least 60% three times in the last 20 years.
\n
SAMDATA BYYCHARTS
\n
It's in one of those slumps now as Truly -- its hard seltzer brand -- underperforms amid an avalanche of competition. After the decline, the stock is offering investors an opportunity they don't get very often. Analysts still expect revenue of $2.16 billion this year. Although no one can predict when that will happen, a 10% drop occurs about once every two years. That's why I'm highlighting five high-quality companies to buy if the most recent swoon persists.\nI can't tell you where Adobe(NASDAQ:ADBE),Markel(NYSE:MKL),Take Two Interactive Software(NASDAQ:TTWO),Vertex Pharmaceuticals(NASDAQ:VRTX), and BostonBeer(NYSE:SAM)will trade next week or next month. But I'm confident they will significantly outperform the market over the next three-plus years. Here's why.\nAdobe\nAt a market capitalization of $300 billion, Adobe is one of the largest software companies in the world. Its applications are the backbone of a lot of the content creative professionals produce. Through the years, it has also given them the ability to manage, measure, and monetize their output. The company breaks its results into three categories.\nDigital media encompasses the company's creative cloud offering. It's a subscription service that houses applications for virtually anyone creating or delivering content. The digital experience segment is a cloud platform that helps companies deliver the most engaging customer experiences. It provides everything from marketing management and automation to digital commerce and predictive analytics. Finally, its publishing and advertising division contains legacy products in addition to its advertising cloud offerings.\nThe business has performed amazingly well. That's slightly better thanMicrosoft.\nCEO Shantanu Narayen sees strength across the business and believes the digital transformation will power the company's financial performance even while it invests in what it calls \"massive market opportunities.\" There is no question the runway is long. That's why I believe any significant sell-off is a gift to investors. Take advantage if you get it andbuy shares of Adobe.\nMarkel\nMarkel has been called the \"baby Berkshire\" for its resemblance to Berkshire Hathaway. It is also an insurance company that uses some of its float -- premiums collected on policies that haven't been paid out in claims -- to invest in stocks and buy businesses. It also manages those businesses in a similar way, treating its holding period as forever.\nOne big difference is that Markel is only a $16.5 billion company. That gives it more flexibility in what it can buy and offers the potential for decades of steady, market-beating returns for shareholders. Want proof? Would it surprise you to find out Markel's stock has outperformed Berkshire Hathaway since 1990? It has.\nMKLDATA BYYCHARTS\nAt less than 37 times the size of Warren Buffett's behemoth, Markel still has an almost limitless opportunity to employ the same model. It might not be an exciting technology stock or double your investment over a short time, but it is a proven market-beating company that can add ballast to a portfolio. If you get a chance to add shares during a sell-off, take it.\nTake Two Interactive\nTake Two has one of the most popular video game franchises of all time --Grand Theft Auto. And the company has more in its stable.\nAnother of its popular games -- theNBA2Kseries -- is also praised for both its polish and commercial success. It has set the company apart financially.\nSince 2012, sales have grown 308%. That compares favorably toActivision Blizzard's 70% andElectronic Arts' 36%. Of course, those publishers were already more established. Still, it helps highlight why I think Take Two is the game maker to buy in a market sell-off.\nEA REVENUE (ANNUAL)DATA BYYCHARTS\nVertex Pharmaceuticals\nSome drugmakers have a portfolio of treatments across many disease areas. Others focus on one type of ailment and work to dominate the space. That's how Vertex has built a market capitalization of $48 billion and annual revenue of $6.7 billion. The company has four approved drugs for cystic fibrosis -- a disease that causes mucus to build up in organs -- and treats roughly half of the 83,000 patients in the U.S., Europe, Australia, and Canada.\nManagement believes it can treat an additional 30,000 of those patients by successfully commercializing drugs in markets where it recently gained approval, obtaining approval in new markets, and rolling out its newest CF drug in the U.S. and Europe.\nIt has also partnered with other biotechs to maintain its position in CF and explore new growth opportunities. It's a robust pipeline with a lot of potential.\nDespite that, Wall Street isn't giving the company a lot of credit. Itsprice-to-sales ratiois the lowest it has been since 2012 -- the year it began selling its first CF drug. Analysts expect sales to climb this year and next, making the discount even more pronounced. With a strong foundation in CF and so much potential in the pipeline, Vertex Pharmaceuticals might already be a steal.\nBoston Beer\nRiding the trends in the alcoholic beverage industry is like being on a rollercoaster. The stock has experienced drops of at least 60% three times in the last 20 years.\nSAMDATA BYYCHARTS\nIt's in one of those slumps now as Truly -- its hard seltzer brand -- underperforms amid an avalanche of competition. After the decline, the stock is offering investors an opportunity they don't get very often. Analysts still expect revenue of $2.16 billion this year. That makes the projected P/S ratio of less than three close to the lowest level since the beginning of 2019.\nOf course, it could get worse before it gets better. Management slashed its earnings forecast in July and then pulled guidance earlier this month, saying it would incur write-offs and fees associated with the product. As scary as that is, I'm betting Boston Beer will repeat its history of surviving a downturn, finding a new trend, and powering to new all-time highs in the years ahead.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":247,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3576648177420535","authorId":"3576648177420535","name":"Matchbox20","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/475916823fe04f3f17460a204e8e4aa0","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3576648177420535","authorIdStr":"3576648177420535"},"content":"ya, no chance to buy in.","text":"ya, no chance to buy in.","html":"ya, no chance to buy in."}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9018977427,"gmtCreate":1648965106607,"gmtModify":1676534429839,"author":{"id":"4094557117203060","authorId":"4094557117203060","name":"YS82","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/00edaee27a12bd6d16f16f29a3f0c55d","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4094557117203060","authorIdStr":"4094557117203060"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$ChargePoint Holdings Inc.(CHPT)$Hope it fly soon","listText":"$ChargePoint Holdings Inc.(CHPT)$Hope it fly soon","text":"$ChargePoint Holdings Inc.(CHPT)$Hope it fly soon","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b6c7923fe50428bc917803e7efa0279d","width":"828","height":"1632"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9018977427","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":458,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9006372468,"gmtCreate":1641619486215,"gmtModify":1676533635601,"author":{"id":"4094557117203060","authorId":"4094557117203060","name":"YS82","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/00edaee27a12bd6d16f16f29a3f0c55d","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4094557117203060","authorIdStr":"4094557117203060"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"I am looking into crowdstrike, Zscaler and cloud flare, but none is profitable yet… so pain may continue…. Despite that advice, many investors tend to buy and sell quickly. In fact, the average holding period for shares on the New York Stock Exchange has trended downward over the last several decades, and it dropped below six months in June 2020.

So what? History tells us that whether the market is up or down in any given year is essentially a coin toss. In other words, if you're dipping in and out of stocks, you're not investing -- you're gambling. And there's nothing wrong with gambling, but if you're looking to build life-changing wealth, you're better off taking a buy-and-hold approach. A long-term mindset helps you avoid short-term volatility and it gives your investment theses time to play out.

Two stocks that could benefit an investor using a buy-and-hold approach are Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Zscaler (NASDAQ:ZS). Each has great potential to make you richer in the long run. Here's what you should know.

1. Tesla

CEO Elon Musk has often said manufacturing efficiency would be Tesla's long-term advantage, and the company is making good on that notion. Its theoretical annual production capacity now exceeds 1 million electric vehicles (EVs), and despite headwinds created by chip shortages, Tesla delivered over 936,000 vehicles in 2021, up 87% from the prior year.

More importantly, as production capacity has scaled in both the U.S. and China, Tesla's cost per vehicle has fallen, dropping 55% between 2017 and the first quarter of 2021. That efficiency is due in part to Tesla's 2170 battery cell, a technology that Musk has called "the highest energy density cell in the world, and also the cheapest." To that end, Tesla pays an estimated $187 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for its battery packs -- the most expensive part of an EV. That's 24% lower than the industry average and 10% lower than the next-closest competitor.

Additionally, through November 2021, Tesla held 13.7% market share in terms of EV sales, easily besting the second-place EV manufacturer BYD, which captured 9% market share. Collectively, the company's improving efficiency and its dominant position have translated into impressive financial results on both the top and bottom lines.

Metric

Q3 2019

Q3 2021

CAGR

Revenue (TTM)

$24.4 million

$46.9 billion

39%

Free cash flow (TTM)

$873 million

$2.6 billion

71%

Data source: YCharts. TTM = trailing 12 months. CAGR = compound annual growth rate.

Despite Tesla's past success, I think the company's best days are yet to come. Production of the Tesla Semi (a semi-tractor trailer) is slated to start in 2022, and the trucking industry is ripe for disruption. The company also plans to integrate its new 4680 battery cell into vehicles this year, a technology that should reinforce its current cost advantages. Specifically, management believes the 4680 battery cell will cut the cost per kWh by 56% and boost EV range by 54%.

Further down the road, Tesla aims to launch an autonomous ride-hailing service, a market that ARK Invest analysts value at $1.2 trillion by 2030. While Tesla's full self-driving software is still in the works, Musk has hinted that the company would have a fully autonomous $25,000 EV in late 2023 or 2024. But even if Tesla misses that target, the company still appears to have a big head start in the race to build a self-driving car. That's why I plan to hold this stock forever.

2. Zscaler

Zscaler specializes in cybersecurity. Its cloud platform, the Zero Trust Exchange, is spread across 150 data centers, creating a global network that is fast, safe, and reliable. This distributed architecture, known as a secure access service edge (SASE), allows clients to access corporate resources from any device or location, while also eliminating the IT burden of buying and managing on-site hardware. In short, Zscaler is the new corporate network.

Specifically, Zscaler Private Access (ZPA) safeguards internally managed resources, like software hosted in a private data center; and Zscaler Internet Access (ZIA) offers the same protection for externally managed resources, such as applications hosted in the public cloud. More recently, the company expanded its offering with Zscaler Digital Experience (ZDX), an infrastructure performance monitoring solution, and Zscaler Cloud Protection (ZCP), a suite of tools that allows clients to secure cloud workloads.

Collectively, those products fuel digital transformation, keeping corporate networks secure no matter whether the information is stored on-site or in the cloud, nor whether it's accessed by employees in the office or those working remotely. To that end, research firm Gartner believes 60% of enterprises will have plans in place to adopt SASE networks by 2025, up from just 10% in 2020.

More importantly, Gartner has recognized Zscaler as the industry leader for 10 consecutive years, and that advantage has been a powerful growth driver for this cybersecurity company.

Metric

Q1 2020

Q1 2022

CAGR

Revenue (TTM)

$333.1 million

$761.0 million

51%

Free cash flow (TTM)

$33.5 million

$184.9 million

135%

Data source: YCharts. TTM = trailing 12 months. CAGR = compound annual growth rate. Note: Q1 2022 ended Oct. 31, 2021.

Going forward, Zscaler has plenty of room to grow its business. The company currently serves 5,600 clients, comprising 26 million paid seats. But management puts the near-term opportunity at 335 million seats, which brings the company's addressable market to $72 billion. However, Zscaler could extend its services to smaller businesses (fewer than 2,000 employees), which would push its opportunity above 600 million seats.

More broadly, as the best-in-class network security solution, the company should see strong demand in the coming years as more enterprises seek to protect their sensitive data. Despite that advice, many investors tend to buy and sell quickly. In fact, the average holding period for shares on the New York Stock Exchange has trended downward over the last several decades, and it dropped below six months in June 2020.So what? History tells us that whether the market is up or down in any given year is essentially a coin toss. In other words, if you're dipping in and out of stocks, you're not investing -- you're gambling. And there's nothing wrong with gambling, but if you're looking to build life-changing wealth, you're better off taking a buy-and-hold approach. A long-term mindset helps you avoid short-term volatility and it gives your investment theses time to play out.Two stocks that could benefit an investor using a buy-and-hold approach are Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Zscaler (NASDAQ:ZS). Each has great potential to make you richer in the long run. Here's what you should know.Image source: Getty Images.1. TeslaCEO Elon Musk has often said manufacturing efficiency would be Tesla's long-term advantage, and the company is making good on that notion. Its theoretical annual production capacity now exceeds 1 million electric vehicles (EVs), and despite headwinds created by chip shortages, Tesla delivered over 936,000 vehicles in 2021, up 87% from the prior year.More importantly, as production capacity has scaled in both the U.S. and China, Tesla's cost per vehicle has fallen, dropping 55% between 2017 and the first quarter of 2021. That efficiency is due in part to Tesla's 2170 battery cell, a technology that Musk has called \"the highest energy density cell in the world, and also the cheapest.\" To that end, Tesla pays an estimated $187 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for its battery packs -- the most expensive part of an EV. That's 24% lower than the industry average and 10% lower than the next-closest competitor.Additionally, through November 2021, Tesla held 13.7% market share in terms of EV sales, easily besting the second-place EV manufacturer BYD, which captured 9% market share. Collectively, the company's improving efficiency and its dominant position have translated into impressive financial results on both the top and bottom lines.MetricQ3 2019Q3 2021CAGRRevenue (TTM)$24.4 million$46.9 billion39%Free cash flow (TTM)$873 million$2.6 billion71%Data source: YCharts. TTM = trailing 12 months. CAGR = compound annual growth rate.Despite Tesla's past success, I think the company's best days are yet to come. Production of the Tesla Semi (a semi-tractor trailer) is slated to start in 2022, and the trucking industry is ripe for disruption. The company also plans to integrate its new 4680 battery cell into vehicles this year, a technology that should reinforce its current cost advantages. Specifically, management believes the 4680 battery cell will cut the cost per kWh by 56% and boost EV range by 54%.Further down the road, Tesla aims to launch an autonomous ride-hailing service, a market that ARK Invest analysts value at $1.2 trillion by 2030. While Tesla's full self-driving software is still in the works, Musk has hinted that the company would have a fully autonomous $25,000 EV in late 2023 or 2024. But even if Tesla misses that target, the company still appears to have a big head start in the race to build a self-driving car. That's why I plan to hold this stock forever.2. ZscalerZscaler specializes in cybersecurity. In short, Zscaler is the new corporate network.Specifically, Zscaler Private Access (ZPA) safeguards internally managed resources, like software hosted in a private data center; and Zscaler Internet Access (ZIA) offers the same protection for externally managed resources, such as applications hosted in the public cloud. More recently, the company expanded its offering with Zscaler Digital Experience (ZDX), an infrastructure performance monitoring solution, and Zscaler Cloud Protection (ZCP), a suite of tools that allows clients to secure cloud workloads.Collectively, those products fuel digital transformation, keeping corporate networks secure no matter whether the information is stored on-site or in the cloud, nor whether it's accessed by employees in the office or those working remotely. To that end, research firm Gartner believes 60% of enterprises will have plans in place to adopt SASE networks by 2025, up from just 10% in 2020.More importantly, Gartner has recognized Zscaler as the industry leader for 10 consecutive years, and that advantage has been a powerful growth driver for this cybersecurity company.MetricQ1 2020Q1 2022CAGRRevenue (TTM)$333.1 million$761.0 million51%Free cash flow (TTM)$33.5 million$184.9 million135%Data source: YCharts. The company currently serves 5,600 clients, comprising 26 million paid seats. But management puts the near-term opportunity at 335 million seats, which brings the company's addressable market to $72 billion. However, Zscaler could extend its services to smaller businesses (fewer than 2,000 employees), which would push its opportunity above 600 million seats.More broadly, as the best-in-class network security solution, the company should see strong demand in the coming years as more enterprises seek to protect their sensitive data. Some of that has to do with expectations leading into the report. But most of the time, it has to do with management's guidance for the quarters to come.

There's no denying that Tesla's business is in its best shape of all time. It delivered 87% more vehicles in 2021 than in 2020, grew year-over-year full-year revenue by 71%, earned $5.52 billion in net income, and generated over $5 billion in free cash flow despite incurring more than double the capital expenditures in 2021 compared to 2020 due to factory build-outs in Texas and Germany.

It also finished 2021 with a full-year operating margin of 12.1% and a record-high quarterly operating margin of 14.7%. Tesla's industry-leading operating margin continues to be one of the company's biggest competitive advantages. It is the result of strong demand for its vehicles, virtually nonexistent advertising costs, and production efficiency.

However, there were some major red flags in the earnings report and conference call. The operating margin could have been a few percentage points higher if it weren't for massive stock-based compensation for CEO Elon Musk, higher logistical costs due to supply chain issues, and higher costs for parts and services due to inflation. Tesla, which had been navigating the global chip shortage arguably better than other automakers, signaled that it now expects the issue to persist throughout 2022. "In 2022, [the] supply chain will continue to be the fundamental limiter of output across all factories," said Musk during the company's Q4 2021 earnings call on Wednesday.

Tesla's results and management's commentary indicate that other companies like Lucid could have a difficult time getting their production off the ground in 2022. As of Q3 2021, Lucid reported over 17,000 reservations across the four trims of its Air luxury electric sedan line, so the demand is clearly there for it to reach its goal to produce and deliver 20,000 vehicles this year. However, Lucid only began delivering its most expensive version of the Air, the Air Dream Edition, in late October and has yet to announce meaningful deliveries of the second most expensive option, the Grand Touring. Tesla's cost concerns could indicate that Lucid will face challenges and higher than expected input costs as it attempts to produce low volumes of four different versions of the Air.

Another point of concern is shipping and logistics costs. Lacking a sophisticated distribution system, Lucid could face bottlenecks on the customer delivery side of its business as it attempts to ship vehicles across the country.

In sum, supply chain challenges and an ongoing chip shortage are serious threats that could impede Lucid from hitting its 2022 goals. Or even if it does, it could deplete its cash position much quicker than expected.

Rivian's situation isn't like Tesla's, but there's some overlap

John Rosevear (Rivian): This might be oversimplified, but I see two big takeaways from Tesla's fourth-quarter earnings report.

Tesla's getting good prices for its vehicles right now, and that drove nice operating margins last quarter.

Tesla is facing some big challenges in the near term, including rising competition, supply chain woes, and a new-product drought.

The first bullet point won't be a factor for Rivian for a while. It'll be at least a couple of years before the company has the scale to generate positive operating margins, much less Tesla-sized ones.

But that said, Rivian is facing its own challenges in the near term, and some of them do overlap with Tesla's.

Like Tesla (and just about every other automaker), Rivian has been struggling with supplier issues amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and a related global shortage of automotive-grade semiconductors. Those supply chain woes caused Rivian to miss its own modest 2021 production guidance: Rivian had told investors that it expected to build about 1,200 vehicles in 2021, but it was able to complete just 1,015 before year-end.

(I think that miss is no big deal in context, but Rivian's communications around it could have been better. Let's hope that's a lesson learned.)

What about competition? Tesla's stock is priced for absolute global domination; any signs that the "legacy" automakers can build competitive electric vehicles at scale are arguably bearish. Rivian, to its immense credit, doesn't have that problem — first, because nobody is expecting Rivian to sell 20 million vehicles a year any time soon, and second, because it has staked out an interesting, profitable, and unique niche with its first two products.

Rivian's R1T pickup and the related R1S SUV are aimed at an upscale, outdoorsy crowd -- a market niche that the company might have to itself for a while. Image source: Rivian Automotive.

Simply put, Rivian is courting the kinds of customers who might also be drawn to upscale apparel maker Patagonia. Like Patagonia, Rivian's products are premium-priced, tailored for an outdoor lifestyle, and well-made. While other automakers offer products that occupy somewhat similar spaces in the market, nobody has aimed directly at that niche like Rivian — and certainly not with pure-electric vehicles.

To be clear, that's not a moat. In time, if Rivian is successful, direct competition will arrive, just as it's arriving now for Tesla. But that will probably take at least a few years. That's time that Rivian can use to turn its promising start into a sustainable business — just like Tesla did with its original Model S and Model X.

Two exciting companies that are worth following

Lucid and Rivian remain high-risk, high-reward options in the EV space. Share prices of both companies are down over 60% from all-time highs. But to be clear, Lucid's $44 billion valuation and Rivian's $49 billion valuation are still extremely expensive for companies that are years away from positive operating income.

However, the market is different today than it used to be. Lucid and Rivian both have tons of cash on their balance sheets. As long as the investment thesis remains intact, both companies should find it easier to raise more cash if needed -- a luxury Tesla wasn't afforded when it was building out its business a few years ago. That's because industry sentiment has shifted in favor of EV investment. Even the legacy automakers are seeing the potential in EVs -- and investing billions accordingly.

For investors that have been waiting to pick up shares of Lucid and Rivian, now good be a good time to open a starter position, but only if you're OK with the stock falling much further and waiting years for the investment thesis to play out.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
How Tesla's Record Earnings Impact Lucid and Rivian
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nHow Tesla's Record Earnings Impact Lucid and Rivian\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-01-31 07:35 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The old saying that the U.S. stock market goes up more than it goes down but goes down faster than it goes up couldn't be truer. Or even if it does, it could deplete its cash position much quicker than expected.Rivian's situation isn't like Tesla's, but there's some overlapJohn Rosevear (Rivian): This might be oversimplified, but I see two big takeaways from Tesla's fourth-quarter earnings report.Tesla's getting good prices for its vehicles right now, and that drove nice operating margins last quarter.Tesla is facing some big challenges in the near term, including rising competition, supply chain woes, and a new-product drought. The first bullet point won't be a factor for Rivian for a while. It'll be at least a couple of years before the company has the scale to generate positive operating margins, much less Tesla-sized ones. But that said, Rivian is facing its own challenges in the near term, and some of them do overlap with Tesla's.Like Tesla (and just about every other automaker), Rivian has been struggling with supplier issues amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and a related global shortage of automotive-grade semiconductors. Let's hope that's a lesson learned.) What about competition? Tesla's stock is priced for absolute global domination; any signs that the \"legacy\" automakers can build competitive electric vehicles at scale are arguably bearish. Image source: Rivian Automotive.Simply put, Rivian is courting the kinds of customers who might also be drawn to upscale apparel maker Patagonia. Two exciting companies that are worth followingLucid and Rivian remain high-risk, high-reward options in the EV space. For investors that have been waiting to pick up shares of Lucid and Rivian, now good be a good time to open a starter position, but only if you're OK with the stock falling much further and waiting years for the investment thesis to play out.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":213,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9085539508,"gmtCreate":1650724274543,"gmtModify":1676534782798,"author":{"id":"4094557117203060","authorId":"4094557117203060","name":"YS82","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/00edaee27a12bd6d16f16f29a3f0c55d","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4094557117203060","authorIdStr":"4094557117203060"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$JD.com(JD)$Hope it will start to return. With the possible exception of billionaires, just about everyone does. The idea spawned a British (and then an American) quiz show. On television, it can happen overnight.

In investing, becoming a millionaire takes time. Buying shares of high-performing companies can, over time, produce life-changing gains. The Trade Desk, Paycom Software, and Align Technology are three that I believe have that potential.

Let's look at their earnings, growth rates, and valuations to see how they could transform a $100,000 portfolio into a seven-figure retirement nest egg over the next decade.

1. The Trade Desk

There is an old saying in the advertising business that half of ad spending is wasted, but nobody knows which half. The Trade Desk is eliminating that waste with its data-driven self-service platform. Its customers manage their ad spending on more than 500 billion digital opportunities per day. The goal is to help customers make the most intelligent ad-buying decisions and provide them with an abundance of performance feedback. In today's digital economy, it's invaluable.

And business is growing like a weed. Earnings per share (EPS) are expected to climb more than 23% next year. That's a reasonable rate to use in our calculation. The company has grown revenue 375% over the past five years. Also, gross spend on Trade Desk's platform climbed 47% last year to $6.2 billion. And management pegs the global ad-spend opportunity at $750 billion, with about $50 billion in display advertising. That offers plenty of room to grow for years.

TTD revenue (TTM). Data by YCharts. TTM = trailing 12 months.

Wall Street sees the potential. The Trade Desk's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio has varied between 40 and 120 over the past few years. We'll use 50 for our calculations.

Doing the math on an initial investment of $33,333.33 (a third of the $100,000) leads to a stake in The Trade Desk worth almost $190,000 in 2032. That relies on bold assumptions. But they are well within what the company has delivered so far.

2. Paycom

Paycom offers businesses a platform to manage employee payroll, time and attendance, and benefits administration, among other things. Its product was built for the cloud. That's different from many traditional human capital management (HCM) vendors that have pieced together acquired software over the years.

Customers can clearly tell the difference. Paycom topped $1 billion in revenue last year for the first time, a 26% increase over 2020. Most importantly, that revenue is recurring and sticky. Revenue retention was 94% in 2021. Customers stick around once they start using the platform.

Before the pandemic, Paycom's top line was expanding between 30% and 45% each year. We'll use last year's 26% for our calculation and apply a multiple of 60 times earnings. That seems high. But shares have stayed within a range of 50 to 100 times earnings over the years.

For Paycom, that one-third of the $100,000 hypothetically invested in 2022 turns into more than $350,000 a decade from now. That would make it a 10-bagger. While it might seem unlikely, if the market continues to reward predictable revenue, and Paycom continues to grow, it's possible. After all, its $1.1 billion in 2021 revenue is a drop in the bucket of an HCM market that is predicted to reach $47 billion by 2029.

3. Align Technology

The company best known for its Invisalign clear teeth-straightening system is actually a vertically integrated combination of several businesses. They all help people get straighter teeth faster, and orthodontists and dentists see more clients every year. It also provides scanners and software -- two acquisitions -- that help practitioners develop and communicate a plan for patients.

The growth opportunity is tremendous. Management estimates 500 million potential customers in the world with 21 million orthodontic starts each year -- two-thirds of them teens. For context, it shipped 2.55 million aligners last year.

Align is the crown jewel in our attempt to grow a million-dollar portfolio. The $33,333.33 invested in it could grow over the next 10 years into $461,000. That's assuming the $12.50 analysts expect this year grows at the midpoint of management's long-term guidance of 20% to 30% a year. Similar to the other two stocks, Align typically trades at a premium. We'll use 50 times earnings, slightly above the bottom of the 40 to 100 historical P/E range. It's an amazing potential return when running the numbers.

"It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future"

That quote from Yankees legend Yogi Berra underscores a key point in the analysis above. No one knows what the world is going to look like in 10 years. Investors with a long-term mindset need to block out the noise without being irresponsible.

The Trade Desk, Paycom, and Align have all grown rapidly while turning a profit. I expect that to continue. If the assumptions hold, a $100,000 investment will be worth $1 million in 10 short years.

Calculations and chart by author.

It's an interesting exercise that relies on the past as a guide. I don't see any good reason or justification for the sell-off as Palantir will continue to grow its top line rapidly and new service offerings are set to fuel the firm's commercial growth. That Palantir is overvalued, is a myth!

Commercial revenue growth could accelerate as new products launch

There are few industries that have as fantastic growth prospects as the big data and analytics industry. Companies are accumulating more and more data from customers and their operations, requiring software solutions and artificial intelligence support to monetize this data most efficiently.

What am I most excited about, as a Palantir investor, is Palantir's opening of a new growth frontier in the big data world. Palantir will start to roll out its "Foundry for Crypto" in FY 2022 which offers banks, FinTechs and other companies involved in the crypto economy a way to validate customer information and to implement anti-money laundering tools. Since the crypto universe is still highly unregulated, Palantir's Foundry for Crypto could make a big difference in legitimizing this industry.

Blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies are here to stay and Palantir has a huge opportunity at its hands to develop a multi-million-dollar revenue business within a very short period of time. Key customers for Palantir's Foundry for Crypto are likely going to be financial institutions and crypto trading marketplaces like Coinbase (COIN) which have massive customer bases. Adoption of Palantir's Foundry for Crypto platform by leading market institutions could materially accelerate Palantir's commercial revenue growth.

Because of the opening of a new business segment, I see strong prospects for revenue acceleration for Palantir in the foreseeable future. Palantir's commercial revenue growth accelerated throughout FY 2021 due to strong customer acquisition and growing adoption of the firm's products and services. Palantir's commercial revenue growth accelerated from 19% in Q1'21 to 28% in Q2'21, and then to 37% in Q3'21. Palantir's revenue acceleration in the commercial business was the reason why Palantir raised its free cash flow and revenue guidance for FY 2021. Because the commercial segment is growing increasingly fast, Palantir already raised its free cash flow outlook twice in FY 2021. The firm now expects free cash flow of $400M+ for FY 2021, after raising the guidance by 33% in Q3'21.

Palantir is not overvalued based on expected free cash flow ramp

Palantir's business reached a critical point in FY 2021 and the proof is in the company's growing free cash flow margins. As the firm scales its services and leads more customers through its onboarding process, Palantir should see a significant improvement of its free cash flow margin going forward. Palantir's Q3'21 free cash flow was $119M which calculates to a free cash flow margin of 30%. I believe Palantir could grow its free cash flow margin to 40% by 2025, meaning the firm is set to become a seriously profitable business within the next four years.I also expect Palantir to grow revenues faster than the 30% that have been mentioned as a long-term growth target. The reason for this is that Palantir is signing on more customers and those customers spend more money on the firm's products and services over time, meaning monetization is improving. Assuming that Palantir can grow revenues at an annual 35% rate over the next four years, Palantir is looking at $5.0B in revenues and $2.0B in free cash flow by FY 2025. The calculation below is built on the assumption that Palantir's free cash flow margin will grow from 30% in FY 2021 to 40% by FY 2025. Over the next four years, Palantir should be able to increase its annual free cash flow by at least a factor of 4 X.And investors should not forget about this potentially massive income stream…

The "forgotten" SPAC business

Palantir has come up with a clever revenue growth strategy that combines upside in SPAC investments with long-term software servicing contracts. Palantir is committing investing capital to startups that look to finance growth and, in return, the company gets equity and a signed contract for the provision of its software platforms. I rarely see this business discussed, but it presents considerable valuation upside for Palantir. In Q3'21, the firm's total investments in startups summarized to $226.5M. Palantir only needs one big exit from one of these SPAC investments listed below to generate a massive windfall.Risks with Palantir

The biggest risk for shares of Palantir, as I see it, is continual selling pressure that is the result of a profound misunderstanding related to how the firm's business model works in practice. Palantir's business is evolving and progress is measurable and undeniable. The proof is in Palantir's improving free cash flow margin and accelerating (commercial) revenue growth. Revenues can only accelerate if more companies adopt Palantir's services. Customers are also growing their platform spend, meaning each customer that signs with Palantir is going to have a higher value for the firm in the future, unless they cancel their relationship of course. Since the business had a net customer add of 34 in Q3'21, there is no evidence that customers are unhappy with the services they receive. Palantir's total customer base increased at a massive 20% rate quarter over quarter in Q3'21, proving significant momentum in customer sign-ups.

I am willing to change my opinion on Palantir if the firm's actual revenue growth rates and free cash flow margins drop below my estimates.

Final thoughts

Based off of free cash flow estimates, which do not include pay-offs from SPAC divestments, shares of Palantir trade at 16 X FY 2025 projected free cash flow, assuming a 10 PP FCF margin improvement in the next four years. This margin improvement could result from the launch of new high-margin products like Foundry for Crypto, the accelerating roll-out of Foundry for Builders and higher product spend on a per-customer basis. I don't see any good reason or justification for the sell-off as Palantir will continue to grow its top line rapidly and new service offerings are set to fuel the firm's commercial growth. That Palantir is overvalued, is a myth!Commercial revenue growth could accelerate as new products launchThere are few industries that have as fantastic growth prospects as the big data and analytics industry. Companies are accumulating more and more data from customers and their operations, requiring software solutions and artificial intelligence support to monetize this data most efficiently. What am I most excited about, as a Palantir investor, is Palantir's opening of a new growth frontier in the big data world. Palantir will start to roll out its \"Foundry for Crypto\" in FY 2022 which offers banks, FinTechs and other companies involved in the crypto economy a way to validate customer information and to implement anti-money laundering tools. Since the crypto universe is still highly unregulated, Palantir's Foundry for Crypto could make a big difference in legitimizing this industry.Blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies are here to stay and Palantir has a huge opportunity at its hands to develop a multi-million-dollar revenue business within a very short period of time. Key customers for Palantir's Foundry for Crypto are likely going to be financial institutions and crypto trading marketplaces like Coinbase (COIN) which have massive customer bases. Adoption of Palantir's Foundry for Crypto platform by leading market institutions could materially accelerate Palantir's commercial revenue growth.Because of the opening of a new business segment, I see strong prospects for revenue acceleration for Palantir in the foreseeable future. The firm now expects free cash flow of $400M+ for FY 2021, after raising the guidance by 33% in Q3'21.Palantir is not overvalued based on expected free cash flow rampPalantir's business reached a critical point in FY 2021 and the proof is in the company's growing free cash flow margins. All of those choices can sometimes feel overwhelming, and it can be tough to determine which investments are right for you.
\n
While everyone will have different preferences and investing styles, there are some investments that can make a fantastic addition to anyone's portfolio. If you're ready to send your savings to the moon, these options could be a wise choice.
\n

\n
\n
1. Growth stocks
\n
Growth stocks are investments that have the potential for above-average growth. Many tech stocks fall into this category, including companies like Amazon, Shopify, and Square.
\n
Although growth stocks can be higher risk than their more established counterparts, there's also more room for reward. These stocks are often from innovative companies that are disrupting their industries, which could make them lucrative investments. However, these organizations can also be more volatile than slower-growing businesses.
\n
If you choose to invest in growth stocks, be sure to look beyond the stock's earnings and focus more on the big picture. Stocks that have experienced explosive growth aren't always good long-term investments, so look at factors like the company's financials and its leadership team to gauge whether this stock will continue growing over time.
\n
2. Dividend stocks
\n
Dividend stocks are unique in that they can provide a source of passive income in addition to the returns you earn on your investment.
\n
Some companies will reward shareholders by paying back a portion of their profits each quarter or year, called a dividend. While each dividend payment is small, over time, they can add up substantially and create a source of passive income.
\n
You may also have the option to reinvest your dividends to buy more shares of that particular company's stock. By consistently reinvesting your dividends, you can increase the number of shares you own without actually paying anything out of pocket. And the more shares you own, the more you'll collect in dividend payments.
\n
3. S&P 500 ETFs
\n
If you prefer an investment that requires little to no upkeep, S&P 500 ETFs are a fantastic option. These funds track the S&P 500 index, which means they include the same stocks as the index itself and aim to mirror its long-term performance.
\n
With an S&P 500 ETF, you don't need to choose stocks or research individual companies. All you need to do is invest regularly and hold your investments for as long as possible, and your portfolio will gradually grow over time.
\n
The downside to this type of investment is that it's impossible to beat the market. By definition, S&P 500 ETFs earn average returns. They follow the market, so they can't outperform the market. However, for many investors, average returns are a worthwhile trade-off when you consider that these funds require very little effort to achieve consistent growth over the long run.
\n
4. Fractional shares
\n
Fractional shares are perfect for the investor who wants to buy individual stocks without breaking the bank.
\n
When you buy fractional shares, you're investing in a portion of a single full share of stock. Some stocks cost hundreds or thousands of dollars for a full share, but with fractional shares, you can spend as little as $1 for a small slice of the same stock.
\n
It's still important to do your research when buying fractional shares. It can be tempting to buy risky stocks when it'll only cost you a dollar to invest, but the same general investing principles still apply, regardless of how much you're spending. If you're not willing to hold a stock for at least a few years, it's probably not a stock you should be buying right now.
\n
Investing in the stock market is one of the best ways to increase your net worth and generate wealth over time.
