Additionally, its generative AI engine, Gemini, has recently been subjected to bad press, as its image generation feature failed to depict accurate images of prompts.</p><p>The big problem is that if Alphabet&#39;s AI model is flawed, or shows a particular bias, it can affect its primary business: advertising. The Gemini model will become the basis of everything Alphabet does, and if it causes issues with Alphabet&#39;s advertising model, advertisers may look elsewhere to spend. Considering that 76% of Alphabet&#39;s total revenue comes from ads, this would be a big problem.</p><h2 id=\"id_1514715566\">The hold case: Alphabet isn&#39;t sitting around doing nothing</h2><p>Alphabet is well aware of the issues with its Gemini model. It apologized for the image generation issue and vowed to improve the platform. Additionally, just because the consumer-facing model does one thing doesn&#39;t mean that there isn&#39;t a different model being used internally to perform tasks like improving search results.</p><p>The Gemini model still scores better than many competitors in tasks like math and coding, making it a clear choice for many applications.</p><p>While time will tell what Alphabet does, investors should be assured that the company isn&#39;t letting a generational investment opportunity slip by.</p><h2 id=\"id_2287068253\">The buy case: Alphabet&#39;s stock is far cheaper than its peers</h2><p>Because of Alphabet&#39;s various problems, there isn&#39;t much of a premium attached to the stock. Yet, after a dismal 2022, shares of the Canadian e-commerce platform remain more than 61% off their all-time high achieved roughly two years ago. Still, I think Shopify is worth considering because of its massive growth potential.</p><p>In its most recent quarter (the three months ended on June 30, 2023), Shopify reported $1.7 billion in revenue and $55 billion in Gross Market Value (GMV) sales on its platform. That represents year-over-year revenue growth of 31%, nearly double the 16% revenue growth that Shopify recorded a year ago.</p><p>What&#39;s more, the company&#39;s product attach rate (company revenue divided by GMV of all products sold on the platform) increased to a best-ever 3.08% -- meaning Shopify is generating more revenue for each dollar of products sold on its platform. </p><p>In addition, the company&#39;s subscription revenue has grown to $444 million, up 21% from a year ago. Not only is this subscription revenue more consistent, but it&#39;s more profitable. Shopify&#39;s Subscription Solution segment boasts a gross margin of 81%, compared to the company&#39;s overall gross margin of 49%.</p><p>Looking ahead, management anticipates around 20% revenue growth next quarter as the company completes the sale of its logistics business. In addition, Shopify expects free cash flow to increase as its recent cost-cutting measures kick in.</p><p>Overall, Shopify is a company that is trimming the fat and revving up growth -- an excellent combination for a growth stock on the rise.</p><h2 id=\"id_213468650\">A new AI platform breathed new life into this emerging analytics company</h2><p><strong>Will Healy</strong> <strong>(Palantir): </strong>One of the more prominent beneficiaries of this year&#39;s tech rally is Palantir. Year to date, the stock has risen by approximately 140%, even when accounting for a recent pullback.</p><p>Investors piled into Palantir in the spring as the artificial intelligence and machine-learning-related benefits of Palantir&#39;s Gotham and Foundry platforms became more apparent to investors.</p><p>However, the stock reached a new level when Palantir introduced its Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) in May. The AIP enhances Palantir&#39;s analysis capabilities, capitalizing on large language models to refine the software package&#39;s analytical results. Despite its recent release in May, more than 100 organizations have begun to use AIP, according to CEO Alex Karp.</p><p>Moreover, even with the massive stock price increase this year, Palantir trades 61% below its all-time high. </p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3f9a1194f7b5e4d960a21f147ec8ee59\" alt=\"PLTR data by YCharts.\" title=\"PLTR data by YCharts.\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"433\"/><span>PLTR data by YCharts.</span></p><p>Despite that discount, it may be a more attractive investment now. Its revenue for the first half of 2023 came in at just under $1.1 billion, a 15% increase from the same period in 2022.</p><p>Also, unlike the days of the 2021 bull market, Palantir now earns a generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) profit and has done so for three consecutive quarters. In the first two quarters of 2023, it earned $47 million in net income, an improvement over the $281 million loss during the same period in 2022. Interest income accounted for most of that profit, though it reported $14 million in net operating income. Palantir also expects to earn a profit in each of the next two quarters.</p><p>The downside of these improvements is that the price-to-sales (P/S) ratio has risen to 16. While that does not make Palantir a cheap stock, it is less expensive than in the 2021 bull market when the sales multiple rarely fell below 24.</p><p>Ultimately, the fact that the software as a service (SaaS) stock is now profitable should make such valuations more tolerable. As long as more organizations continue turning to Palantir&#39;s technology, investor interest should grow over time.</p><h2 id=\"id_1521400577\">Investors are paying up for Cloudflare&#39;s long-term prospects</h2><p><strong>Justin Pope (Cloudflare):</strong> Shares of this content distribution network (CDN) and internet technology company are up more than 40% in 2023. Despite this comeback, the stock is roughly 70% off its former highs. Cloudflare was a market darling in 2021, and investors bid shares to an eye-popping valuation as high as 113 times sales.</p><p>What makes Cloudflare such an appealing company? It began as a CDN, which houses data centers worldwide. Customers cache their websites and data on these servers. When someone calls up a site, the network will send the information from the closest server, creating faster load times and better reliability. But Cloudflare is taking things further, layering additional products and services such as security on top of its CDN product.</p><p>This encourages revenue growth from existing customers spending more on Cloudflare over time. The company&#39;s dollar retention rate has ranged from 115% to 126% over the past five quarters, meaning it&#39;s growing without adding new customers, though it&#39;s not slouching there either. The company has 174,129 paying customers, and those spending at least $100,000 (2,352) grew 34% year over year in the second quarter.</p><p>Perhaps best of all, Cloudflare has grown enough to generate free cash flow, a big step toward profitability. Management estimates that product innovation and secular growth will raise its addressable market to $204 billion by 2026. Unimpressed with the company’s plan to counter potential competition to its cash-cow Search unit, shares have pulled back in response.</p><p>While some may view this as an overreaction, the market is likely right on the money. If that’s not bad enough, this latest sell-off may not necessarily be a “one-and-done” event.</p><p><b>GOOG Stock: A.I. Event Fails to Save the Day</b></p><p>When <b>OpenAI’s</b> ChatGPT was released in November, some investors worried it could eventually “disrupt” Alphabet’s dominance in the area of search advertising.</p><p>These concerns have kept climbing following news of <b>Microsoft’s</b>(NASDAQ: <b>MSFT</b>)$10 billion investment in OpenAI, and its plans to integrate OpenAI’s technology into its platforms. Understanding the need to respond quickly to this emerging threat, Alphabet has revealed its answer to ChatGPT: Bard.</p><p>On Feb. 8, at a live-streamed “A.I. Event,” Bard made its public debut. The company may have expected this event to help put to rest worries about Search market competition, but far from “saving the day,” this event was an abject disaster. As <i>Reuters</i> reported, in an ad released in conjunction with the event, Bard gave an inaccurate answer to a prompt.</p><p>Even worse, Alphabet revealed little on how it planned to integrate Bard into its Search platform. This was concerning in the eyes of GOOG stock investors. Microsoft revealed it has already started to integrate OpenAI’s technology into its Bing search engine and Edge web browser at its own event this week.</p><p><b>Competition Is Just One of Many Issues</b></p><p>Clearly not ready for prime time, it makes sense why Bard has increased, not decreased, the market’s confidence in Alphabet’s ability to keep Microsoft from becoming a formidable competitor in search advertising.</p><p>Increased competition in this space could negatively affect both future growth and operating margins for the company’s core business segment.</p><p>As you may know, Alphabet is experiencing competitive pressures across its other units, such as Google Cloud and <b>YouTube</b>, as well. It would be one thing if the competition was the only issue at hand with GOOG stock.</p><p>However, alongside this problem, are a slew of other problems that stand to threaten both the company’s future operating results and the future performance of its shares.</p><p>Alongside the increased competition, the current slowdown in demand in the tech and digital advertising markets is having an impact on near-term results. Although sell-side analysts expect GOOG’s earnings to rise this year, after dropping in 2022, it’s not a guarantee that this will happen.</p><p>As I have discussed recently, Alphabet is also contending with two antitrust suits from the U.S. Department of Justice. With all these issues on its plate, there’s still plenty out there to sink GOOG yet again.</p><p><b>The Takeaway</b></p><p>Although Bard’s debut was undoubtedly a bust, I admit that it’s possible that subsequent developments with Alphabet’s A.I. game plan may help to assuage the latest concerns about competition.</p><p>The company’s earnings could also start to improve in the quarters ahead, whether from better macro conditions or from the cost savings resulting from the recent layoffs. It’s also possible that Alphabet can emerge from current regulatory issues relatively unscathed.</p><p>However, there’s no reason to buy today, in the hopes such promising signs emerge. There’s a strong chance the situation worsens before it improves, which will in turn result in further weakness for shares.</p><p>Put simply, it’s best to stay away from GOOG stock. In the last 90 days, EPS estimates for Apple’s FY 2023 have declined consistently due to growing worries about China&#39;s reopening prospects and down-ward EPS revisions outmatch up-ward EPS revisions by a ratio of 37:2. For FY 2023, analyst expect only 1.2% EPS growth for Apple.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b6f978e36e1a1fbbb1a8ae487d56241d\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"433\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>The picture doesn’t look much better for Apple’s revenue estimate trend: Analysts now expect Apple to grow its top line only 2.7% in FY 2023 to $404.9B. While it&#39;s hard to say whether Amazon is a good long-term investment, it looks pretty dicey in the short term. Here&#39;s why.</p><h2>1. A struggling retail business</h2><p>The retail side of Amazon -- which includes direct sales, the third-party seller business, Prime, advertising, and essentially everything that&#39;s not Amazon Web Services (AWS) -- is having some issues.</p><p>The company overbuilt during the pandemic as it raced to meet intense demand, and now it&#39;s dealing with too much capacity, an uneven consumer spending environment, and competition from traditional retailers like <b>Walmart</b> and <b>Target </b>that spent the pandemic investing heavily in e-commerce.</p><p>Amazon&#39;s North America and International segments combined to produce more than $300 billion of revenue through the first nine months of 2022, but both segments lost money on an operating basis. Between them, Amazon booked an operating loss of more than $8.1 billion.</p><p>During that nine-month period, those two segments included $9.5 billion of advertising revenue, which is presumably a high-margin revenue stream; $8.9 billion in subscription-services revenue like Prime, and $28.7 billion of revenue from third-party seller services. Those sources are growing faster than revenue from online sales, and yet both segments are now posting large losses.</p><p>Amazon&#39;s fast-growing advertising business gets a lot of attention, but it hasn&#39;t improved the bottom line at all. It doesn&#39;t make sense, in my opinion, to treat Amazon&#39;s advertising operations as a distinct business because it&#39;s intimately tied to the retail business. All that advertising revenue appears to just be subsidizing losses elsewhere.</p><p>It&#39;s great that Amazon figured out how to generate billions in advertising revenue, but ads have done absolutely nothing to improve the profitability of its retail business. As consumers pull back, Amazon&#39;s retail business might be a drag on profits throughout much of 2023.</p><h2>2. A potential AWS slowdown</h2><p>AWS is an incredible business. It&#39;s the dominant provider of cloud infrastructure services, and is still growing quickly and producing sky-high profit margins. In the first nine months of 2022, AWS revenue jumped 32% to $58.7 billion, and operating income soared 30% to $17.6 billion.</p><p>In the long run, the cloud infrastructure industry should continue to grow at a healthy clip. On top of newer companies being cloud-first as a matter of course, large enterprises have plenty of on-premises workloads that could be shifted to the cloud over time. AWS is tailor-made for the largest enterprises, and it will likely win a lion&#39;s share of those deals.</p><p>In the shorter term, however, a slowdown is a distinct possibility. A potential recession next year will put many companies into cost-cutting or survival mode. Start-ups that previously didn&#39;t worry about soaring cloud-computing bills will start taking a closer look and work to optimize costs. Enterprises that love to talk about &#34;digital transformation&#34; will slow down or put those plans on hold.</p><p>Amazon&#39;s market capitalization -- nearly $900 billion -- is largely based on the assumption of continued rapid growth and strong profitability of AWS. If that growth slows and margins contract as companies slash costs, the stock market could rethink the company&#39;s premium valuation. The stock is already down more than 50% from its all-time high, but the valuation is still extreme.</p><p>Based on the average analyst estimate for 2023, Amazon stock trades for more than 50 times earnings. That estimate has wide error bars, but it&#39;s hard to argue that the stock is cheap. While it's hard to say whether Amazon is a good long-term investment, it looks pretty dicey in the short term. Here's why.1. A struggling retail businessThe retail side of Amazon -- which includes direct sales, the third-party seller business, Prime, advertising, and essentially everything that's not Amazon Web Services (AWS) -- is having some issues.The company overbuilt during the pandemic as it raced to meet intense demand, and now it's dealing with too much capacity, an uneven consumer spending environment, and competition from traditional retailers like Walmart and Target that spent the pandemic investing heavily in e-commerce.Amazon's North America and International segments combined to produce more than $300 billion of revenue through the first nine months of 2022, but both segments lost money on an operating basis. Between them, Amazon booked an operating loss of more than $8.1 billion.During that nine-month period, those two segments included $9.5 billion of advertising revenue, which is presumably a high-margin revenue stream; $8.9 billion in subscription-services revenue like Prime, and $28.7 billion of revenue from third-party seller services. Those sources are growing faster than revenue from online sales, and yet both segments are now posting large losses.Amazon's fast-growing advertising business gets a lot of attention, but it hasn't improved the bottom line at all. It doesn't make sense, in my opinion, to treat Amazon's advertising operations as a distinct business because it's intimately tied to the retail business. All that advertising revenue appears to just be subsidizing losses elsewhere.It's great that Amazon figured out how to generate billions in advertising revenue, but ads have done absolutely nothing to improve the profitability of its retail business. As consumers pull back, Amazon's retail business might be a drag on profits throughout much of 2023.2. A potential AWS slowdownAWS is an incredible business. It's the dominant provider of cloud infrastructure services, and is still growing quickly and producing sky-high profit margins. In the first nine months of 2022, AWS revenue jumped 32% to $58.7 billion, and operating income soared 30% to $17.6 billion.In the long run, the cloud infrastructure industry should continue to grow at a healthy clip. On top of newer companies being cloud-first as a matter of course, large enterprises have plenty of on-premises workloads that could be shifted to the cloud over time. AWS is tailor-made for the largest enterprises, and it will likely win a lion's share of those deals.In the shorter term, however, a slowdown is a distinct possibility. A potential recession next year will put many companies into cost-cutting or survival mode. Start-ups that previously didn't worry about soaring cloud-computing bills will start taking a closer look and work to optimize costs. Enterprises that love to talk about \"digital transformation\" will slow down or put those plans on hold.Amazon's market capitalization -- nearly $900 billion -- is largely based on the assumption of continued rapid growth and strong profitability of AWS. If that growth slows and margins contract as companies slash costs, the stock market could rethink the company's premium valuation. The stock is already down more than 50% from its all-time high, but the valuation is still extreme.Based on the average analyst estimate for 2023, Amazon stock trades for more than 50 times earnings. That estimate has wide error bars, but it's hard to argue that the stock is cheap. But they&#39;re still heading for a 12% decline.</p><p>And the stock is trading for 29 times forward earnings estimates -- down from about 40 earlier this year.</p><p>Here&#39;s why this looks like a deal. First, Starbucks continues to grow revenue in the double digits. In the most recent quarter, revenue climbed 11% to a record $8.4 billion.</p><p>What&#39;s driving the gains? Starbucks&#39; loyal fans. Starbucks Rewards members accounted for more than half of spending in U.S. stores in the quarter. And this membership base keeps on growing. In the quarter, U.S. active Rewards members increased 16% to 28.7 million members.</p><p>Coronavirus restrictions in China have held back total revenue potential. So, you can imagine Starbucks doing even better in the future. That future may be soon. China recently loosened restrictions. That should offer Starbucks a boost, especially since China is the company&#39;s second-biggest market after the U.S.</p><p>Another reason to be positive about Starbucks has to do with its recently launched &#34;reinvention&#34; plan. The company plans on focusing on several growth areas. For example, it will boost store licensing opportunities -- they tend to lift return on invested capital. Starbucks also aims to strengthen beverage innovation and open new stores to meet consumers&#39; needs.</p><p>The goals are to deliver annual double-digit revenue growth and non-GAAP (EPS) earnings-per-share growth.</p><p>All of this means there are plenty of share price catalysts just ahead. And you may benefit if you scoop up these bargain shares right now.</p><h2>3. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DIS\">Walt Disney</a></h2><p><b>Walt Disney</b> (DIS) has reached an important transition point. The entertainment giant recently brought back one of its star chief executive officers. The move was meant to cut costs and kick-start growth. CEO Bob Iger will stay on for two years, then name a successor.</p><p>There&#39;s reason to believe Iger is the right person for the job. He led Disney through key acquisitions -- such as Marvel -- and was the CEO when the company launched blockbuster film <i>Frozen</i>. Disney&#39;s market value also soared during his tenure.</p><p>Disney isn&#39;t starting off from an extremely weak point. The company&#39;s theme parks remain favorites around the world. And revenue is climbing.</p><p>The parks, experiences, and products unit posted a 73% increase in revenue in the recently ended fiscal year. And the unit&#39;s operating income more than doubled from the year-earlier period to $1.5 billion. Spending in the parks also is on the rise. Per-capita spending climbed almost 40% from fiscal 2019. Strength in this unit is key since it generally represents the most revenue for Disney.</p><p>At the same time, losses have deepened at Disney&#39;s streaming services. The company has invested heavily to expand this business and gain subscribers. Recently, Disney increased the price of its ad-free streaming service. That should help the company as it tries to move this unit toward profitability.</p><p>Disney trades for 22 times forward earnings estimates. That&#39;s down from about 40 earlier this year. Considering the ongoing strength of the parks business and Iger&#39;s return, right now is a great time to buy. Apple has a history of financing generous stock buybacks. In the fourth-quarter, Apple repurchased $25.2B of its shares in the market and buybacks in FY 2022 totaled $84.2B.
