The Singapore-based gaming, e-commerce, and fintech company's revenue rose 5% year over year to $3.1 billion, which missed analysts' estimates by $150 million.

It posted a net profit of $331 million, compared to its loss of $931 million a year ago, as its earnings of $0.54 per share beat the consensus forecast by $0.08. That marked its third consecutive quarter of profitability on the basis of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), but its soft sales growth overshadowed that progress. Let's review Sea's biggest challenges and find out if it's too late to bet on its long-term recovery.

Why is Sea's sales growth slowing down?

Sea owns Shopee, the top e-commerce marketplace in Southeast Asia and Taiwan. It also owns Garena, a video game publisher that generates most of its bookings from Free Fire, a popular battle-royale mobile game launched in 2017.

Both businesses flourished during the pandemic as people shopped online and played video games more frequently. Shopee's revenue rose 160% in 2020 and 136% in 2021, while Garena's bookings grew 80% in 2020 and 44% in 2021.

However, both businesses faced a tough slowdown as the pandemic-induced tailwinds dissipated. Shopee struggled with slowing demand for online shopping and fierce competition from Alibaba's Lazada and other regional competitors.

Garena's Free Fire was banned in India, one of its fastest-growing markets, in early 2022, while the gaming market's post-pandemic slump and competition from similar titles exacerbated its difficulties.

That's why Shopee's revenue only rose 42% in 2022 as Garena's bookings fell 39%. Garena's rapid deterioration was a red flag, since Sea had been largely subsidizing Shopee's loss-leading strategies with Garena's profits. In the second quarter of 2023, Shopee's growth decelerated again as Garena's bookings plummeted.

<colgroup><col width=\"168\"/><col width=\"72\"/><col width=\"72\"/><col width=\"72\"/><col width=\"72\"/><col width=\"71\"/></colgroup>

Metric

Q2 2022

Q3 2022

Q4 2022

Q1 2023

Q2 2023

Shopee revenue growth (YOY)

51%

32%

32%

36%

21%

Garena bookings growth (YOY)

(40%)

(45%)

(39%)

(42%)

(38%)

Data source: Sea Limited. YOY = year over year.

Why are Sea's profits rising?

Sea's sales growth is slowing down, but its profits are rising as it implements aggressive cost-cutting. It laid off thousands of employees, froze salaries, and reduced its bonuses.

At Shopee, it hiked its seller fees while reining in its loss-leading subsidies, promotions, and marketing campaigns. It shut down several of its overseas marketplaces in Latin America, India, and Europe.

On the gaming front, it focused on monetizing Free Fire's existing players instead of growing its user base or developing new games. It also curbed its investments in its smaller fintechs.

Yet all of those cost-cutting moves could also narrow Sea's moat against its top competitors. Its commitment to reining in Shopee's spending coincides with Alibaba's increased investments in Lazada, which only fell behind Shopee in Southeast Asia during the pandemic.

Garena's commitment to propping up Free Fire instead of launching fresh games could also weaken its competitive position in the cutthroat mobile gaming market.

Lastly, cutting its fintech investments -- which had been aimed at expanding its SeaMoney digital wallet and other payment services -- could erode its defenses against Lazada's HelloPay, which is integrated with Ant Group's AliPay and other digital payment platforms.

Its past mistakes are becoming easier to see

Sea's slowdown and abrupt cost-cutting suggests it didn't capitalize on its growth spurt during the pandemic to set up the foundations for its future. Unlike the Latin American e-commerce leader MercadoLibre, which pumped a lot of its cash into the expansion of its own fulfillment network to solidify its control of the region, Sea spent a lot of its excess cash on Shopee's expansion into other saturated overseas markets. As a result, Shopee remains heavily dependent on third-party logistics services and partners across its core markets in Southeast Asia and Taiwan.

But throughout the first half of the year, Sea gradually ramped up its investments in Shopee's first-party logistics network. These improvements include hundreds of new self-service lockers as well as new delivery scheduling and tracking features. Still, the bears will say it should have implemented those sweeping changes several years ago.

Is it too late to buy Sea's stock?

For the full year, analysts expect Sea's revenue to dip 2% to $12.2 billion as it generates a net profit of $671 million, compared to a net loss of $1.7 billion in 2022. Why is Sea's sales growth slowing down?Sea owns Shopee, the top e-commerce marketplace in Southeast Asia and Taiwan. It also owns Garena, a video game publisher that generates most of its bookings from Free Fire, a popular battle-royale mobile game launched in 2017.Both businesses flourished during the pandemic as people shopped online and played video games more frequently. Shopee's revenue rose 160% in 2020 and 136% in 2021, while Garena's bookings grew 80% in 2020 and 44% in 2021.However, both businesses faced a tough slowdown as the pandemic-induced tailwinds dissipated. Shopee struggled with slowing demand for online shopping and fierce competition from Alibaba's Lazada and other regional competitors.Garena's Free Fire was banned in India, one of its fastest-growing markets, in early 2022, while the gaming market's post-pandemic slump and competition from similar titles exacerbated its difficulties. That's why Shopee's revenue only rose 42% in 2022 as Garena's bookings fell 39%. Garena's rapid deterioration was a red flag, since Sea had been largely subsidizing Shopee's loss-leading strategies with Garena's profits. In the second quarter of 2023, Shopee's growth decelerated again as Garena's bookings plummeted.MetricQ2 2022Q3 2022Q4 2022Q1 2023Q2 2023Shopee revenue growth (YOY)51%32%32%36%21%Garena bookings growth (YOY)(40%)(45%)(39%)(42%)(38%)Data source: Sea Limited. YOY = year over year. Why are Sea's profits rising?Sea's sales growth is slowing down, but its profits are rising as it implements aggressive cost-cutting. It also curbed its investments in its smaller fintechs.Yet all of those cost-cutting moves could also narrow Sea's moat against its top competitors. Its commitment to reining in Shopee's spending coincides with Alibaba's increased investments in Lazada, which only fell behind Shopee in Southeast Asia during the pandemic.Garena's commitment to propping up Free Fire instead of launching fresh games could also weaken its competitive position in the cutthroat mobile gaming market.Lastly, cutting its fintech investments -- which had been aimed at expanding its SeaMoney digital wallet and other payment services -- could erode its defenses against Lazada's HelloPay, which is integrated with Ant Group's AliPay and other digital payment platforms. Its past mistakes are becoming easier to seeSea's slowdown and abrupt cost-cutting suggests it didn't capitalize on its growth spurt during the pandemic to set up the foundations for its future. Still, the bears will say it should have implemented those sweeping changes several years ago.Is it too late to buy Sea's stock? For the full year, analysts expect Sea's revenue to dip 2% to $12.2 billion as it generates a net profit of $671 million, compared to a net loss of $1.7 billion in 2022. Based on those estimates, Sea looks cheap trading at less than two times this year's sales.Unfortunately, the company's mistakes are tough to ignore. It balanced its entire business on a single hit video game for far too long, neglected the expansion of Shopee's logistics network in Southeast Asia while pursuing a costly (and largely unsuccessful) overseas expansion, and it's focusing on boosting its profits when it should be far more worried about its long-term growth. So Sea has a lot on its plate as it works to regain investor confidence. In light of these struggles across its entire operation, investors should hold off on buying this beaten-down stock as a turnaround play.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":465,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9073677446,"gmtCreate":1657340760386,"gmtModify":1676535995258,"author":{"id":"4095317771450410","authorId":"4095317771450410","name":"NellyPembers","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a4ee148ae823c1aea7312be4646bf7b1","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4095317771450410","authorIdStr":"4095317771450410"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"They forget I'm playing GME for fun. Wedbush’s Dan Ives, for example, has been talking about the market cap milestone since our conversation in Q3 of last year, at least.

But other analysts have also hopped on the bullish bandwagon recently. Morgan Stanley upped its price target to $200 per share in November, while the JPMorgan research team saw Apple stock heading to $3.5 trillion in market cap over the next 12 months.

One of the most vocal optimists came from the buy side. Loup’s Gene Munster thought that his previous price target had quickly become stale, and that $250 per share now seemed more reasonable. Better yet, demand for Apple’s products and services, as well as consumer appreciation for the brand, seem to be at or near an all-time high.

That said, the setup for the first few weeks or months of 2022 looks challenging to me. Apple stock climbed relentlessly in 2020, and then again last year. Aided by a spike in pandemic-driven demand for tech devices and lavish liquidity in the system, AAPL recorded one of its best three years of returns ever between 2019 and 2021.

As much as the metaverse and autonomous vehicles can and likely will support the company’s financial results over the next many years, I think that AAPL stock is overdue for a breather. While shares will likely climb back above $3 trillion and head much higher from there eventually, I am not so confident that this rally will happen in the immediate future.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":267,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9001862282,"gmtCreate":1641219702402,"gmtModify":1676533584159,"author":{"id":"4095317771450410","authorId":"4095317771450410","name":"NellyPembers","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a4ee148ae823c1aea7312be4646bf7b1","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4095317771450410","authorIdStr":"4095317771450410"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Happy new year! Can shares reclaim the milestone soon and head higher in 2022?

Recently, Apple stock flirted with $3 trillion in market cap, but quickly dipped below $2.9 trillion — as the broad market reacted to monetary tightening that should now happen more rapidly than previously expected.

Can shares of the Cupertino company finally find its way north in 2022 and meet the expectations of so many bulls on Wall Street? Or will bearishness take over during a year of rising interest rates and lingering inflation?

Figure 1: Apple Park in Cupertino, CA.

AAPL: the bull case

As Apple stock climbed viciously between late November and early December, many Wall Street experts piled on in support of “AAPL $3T”.

Can shares reclaim the milestone soon and head higher in 2022?Recently, Apple stock flirted with $3 trillion in market cap, but quickly dipped below $2.9 trillion — as the broad market reacted to monetary tightening that should now happen more rapidly than previously expected. Can shares of the Cupertino company finally find its way north in 2022 and meet the expectations of so many bulls on Wall Street? Or will bearishness take over during a year of rising interest rates and lingering inflation?Figure 1: Apple Park in Cupertino, CA.AAPL: the bull caseAs Apple stock climbed viciously between late November and early December, many Wall Street experts piled on in support of “AAPL $3T”. They're thinking about what trends they want to buy into for the upcoming year and what stocks might help make them rich.

However, reflection is a two-way street. Just as there are great companies that can make investors wealthy, there are stocks that could cost investors a lot of money and should be avoided at all costs. Below are five stocks investors should consider selling right now.

AMC Entertainment

It's no secret that I believe movie theater chain AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) is the most overvalued stock on Wall Street.

For those of you who may not have followed the AMC "made for TV drama" that's occurred this year, the company's shares are up more than 1,200% following an epic short squeeze earlier this year. Short-sellers (investors betting on a security's price to decline) were caught off-guard when AMC was able to save itself from imminent bankruptcy by selling 164 million shares of stock and issuing high-interest debt. But with this short squeeze now in the rearview mirror, AMC's abysmal operating performance, bloated balance sheet, and declining bargaining power with movie studios are in plain view.

For example, before the pandemic took effect, AMC was regularly securing theatrical exclusivity deals of 75 to 90 days. Nowadays, AMC is lucky to secure 45-day theatrical exclusivity. Even taking into account that most revenue is picked up in the first couple of weeks, this 30- to 45-day reduction in exclusivity is going to pinch AMC. It's also bad news considering that inflation-adjusted domestic box office sales have been in decline since 2002.

The bigger issue, as I've stated over and over, is AMC can't make good on its liabilities. It has $5.45 billion in outstanding debt at roughly an 8% average interest rate. Keep that rate in mind, because lending rates are pretty much at historic lows. It also has over $1 billion in aggregate debt due in late 2026 and mid-2027 that's valued at more than 30% below face value. With the company hemorrhaging cash and not able to sell any additional stock thanks to its impassioned but misguided retail investors, it looks to be making a slow walk toward a chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization.

Suffice it to say, AMC Entertainment is a stock investors can confidently sell right now.

MicroStrategy

A second stock investors should strongly consider selling right now is "enterprise analytics software company" MicroStrategy (NASDAQ:MSTR). I have "enterprise analytics software company" in quotations because CEO Michael Saylor has effectively ignored this stagnant part of the company's operations and turned MicroStrategy into a leveraged gamble on Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC).

According to the company's investor presentation earlier this month, it's holding 122,478 Bitcoin at an average price of $29,861. The issue with this strategy is threefold, in my view.

First, I'm not convinced Bitcoin is a sound investment. I recently outlined my views on Bitcoin, which centers on its false scarcity and it's less-than-stellar network performance. Bitcoin is constantly being out-innovated when it comes to payments and nonfinancial blockchain applications.

Second, MicroStrategy destroyed a reasonably safe balance sheet by piling on more than $2 billion in debt and issuing $900 million in stock, all of which was used to buy Bitcoin. Saylor has leveraged a public company's future on an asset that produces nothing.

And third, I believe Saylor is a poor leader. Earlier this year, Saylor told the world in an interview to "go mortgage your house and buy Bitcoin with it." This is incredibly bad advice, and all the more reason to avoid MicroStrategy.

Cassava Sciences

Another stock investors can sell right now is clinical-stage biotech stock Cassava Sciences (NASDAQ:SAVA).

Cassava made waves in the first quarter when it announced positive interim analysis data from its open-label study of simufilam for patients with Alzheimer's disease. The data showed both cognition and behavior score improvements at the six-month mark. Since Alzheimer's has no cure, any positive clinical data tends to be well-received.

But there are two glaring issues that should send folks scurrying to the sidelines. First of all, the track record of success for clinical-stage therapeutics targeting Alzheimer's disease is incredibly low. While we've witnessed plenty of early stage success, virtually all late-stage Alzheimer's trials end in failure. This isn't a knock against the research, so much as recognizing that tackling the blood-brain barrier is tricky.

The second concern is that Cassava Sciences is facing allegations of manipulating its trial data. The company also announced in November that federal agencies are investigating its practices, without specifically naming the federal agencies in question. Keeping in mind that some of the allegations have come from firms shorting the stock, this is a headache you're better off letting someone else deal with.

GameStop

Investors should also considering selling the original meme stock, GameStop (NYSE:GME).

A few weeks before AMC ascended to the heavens on its short squeeze, GameStop's high short interest attracted retail investors. In fact, GameStop's short interest was higher than any publicly traded company, as of mid-January, making it the perfect candidate for an epic squeeze. However, with this short-term event now over, investors are forced to grapple with GameStop's poor operating performance.

On the positive side, GameStop was able to raise sufficient capital from selling its stock to rid its balance sheet of debt. This net-cash position, coupled with the long-term growth potential of digital gaming, means there are no bankruptcy concerns, unlike with AMC.

But GameStop was notably late in shifting its strategy to include digital gaming. Nowadays, the company is busy shuttering stores in an effort to lower its expenses and back its way into the profit column. They're thinking about what trends they want to buy into for the upcoming year and what stocks might help make them rich. However, reflection is a two-way street. Just as there are great companies that can make investors wealthy, there are stocks that could cost investors a lot of money and should be avoided at all costs. Below are five stocks investors should consider selling right now.Image source: Getty Images.AMC EntertainmentIt's no secret that I believe movie theater chain AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) is the most overvalued stock on Wall Street. For those of you who may not have followed the AMC \"made for TV drama\" that's occurred this year, the company's shares are up more than 1,200% following an epic short squeeze earlier this year. It's also bad news considering that inflation-adjusted domestic box office sales have been in decline since 2002.The bigger issue, as I've stated over and over, is AMC can't make good on its liabilities. With the company hemorrhaging cash and not able to sell any additional stock thanks to its impassioned but misguided retail investors, it looks to be making a slow walk toward a chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization.Suffice it to say, AMC Entertainment is a stock investors can confidently sell right now.Image source: Getty Images.MicroStrategyA second stock investors should strongly consider selling right now is \"enterprise analytics software company\" MicroStrategy (NASDAQ:MSTR). I have \"enterprise analytics software company\" in quotations because CEO Michael Saylor has effectively ignored this stagnant part of the company's operations and turned MicroStrategy into a leveraged gamble on Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC).According to the company's investor presentation earlier this month, it's holding 122,478 Bitcoin at an average price of $29,861. The issue with this strategy is threefold, in my view.First, I'm not convinced Bitcoin is a sound investment. I recently outlined my views on Bitcoin, which centers on its false scarcity and it's less-than-stellar network performance. Bitcoin is constantly being out-innovated when it comes to payments and nonfinancial blockchain applications.Second, MicroStrategy destroyed a reasonably safe balance sheet by piling on more than $2 billion in debt and issuing $900 million in stock, all of which was used to buy Bitcoin. Saylor has leveraged a public company's future on an asset that produces nothing. And third, I believe Saylor is a poor leader. Earlier this year, Saylor told the world in an interview to \"go mortgage your house and buy Bitcoin with it.\" This is incredibly bad advice, and all the more reason to avoid MicroStrategy.Image source: Getty Images.Cassava SciencesAnother stock investors can sell right now is clinical-stage biotech stock Cassava Sciences (NASDAQ:SAVA).Cassava made waves in the first quarter when it announced positive interim analysis data from its open-label study of simufilam for patients with Alzheimer's disease. The data showed both cognition and behavior score improvements at the six-month mark. Since Alzheimer's has no cure, any positive clinical data tends to be well-received.But there are two glaring issues that should send folks scurrying to the sidelines. Keeping in mind that some of the allegations have come from firms shorting the stock, this is a headache you're better off letting someone else deal with.Image source: Getty Images.GameStopInvestors should also considering selling the original meme stock, GameStop (NYSE:GME).A few weeks before AMC ascended to the heavens on its short squeeze, GameStop's high short interest attracted retail investors. This net-cash position, coupled with the long-term growth potential of digital gaming, means there are no bankruptcy concerns, unlike with AMC.But GameStop was notably late in shifting its strategy to include digital gaming. Nowadays, the company is busy shuttering stores in an effort to lower its expenses and back its way into the profit column. The company's large brick-and-mortar presence is expected to work against it for the foreseeable future, and could keep it from profitability for a few years.Further, Wall Street has been unimpressed with management's lack of concrete steps that'll be taken to turn the business around. Even with a hefty cash balance, GameStop is grossly overvalued.A Tesla Model S charging. Image source: Tesla Motors.Tesla MotorsLast, but certainly not least, investors should consider giving electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) the boot.Tesla has managed to do a lot of great things with its first-mover advantage. Tesla's first-mover advantage will fade sooner than later. What's more, Tesla's income statement has been aided by selling Bitcoin at a profit earlier this year, as well as selling renewable energy credits (RECs) to other automakers. Take away these RECs and Tesla's profits aren't even remotely as impressive.Valued at nearly 130 times Wall Street's forward-year earnings in an industry where single-digit earnings multiples are commonplace, I'd have to think Tesla's stock is due for a major reversion.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":304,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9073677446,"gmtCreate":1657340760386,"gmtModify":1676535995258,"author":{"id":"4095317771450410","authorId":"4095317771450410","name":"NellyPembers","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a4ee148ae823c1aea7312be4646bf7b1","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4095317771450410","authorIdStr":"4095317771450410"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"They forget I'm playing GME for fun.
