However, poor management decisions, a slow economic environment, high interest rates, worsening sentiment, higher costs, and other factors caused PayPal's stock to melt to a low of just $50 in recent months.

PYPL (StockCharts.com)

This monstrous decline illustrates an epic drop of 84%. PayPal probably bottomed, and we could see an epic recovery from here. Despite the transitory issues, PayPal remains the preeminent global online payment platform. Also, despite the economic slowdown, PayPal's revenues continue expanding, and we should see healthy revenue growth ahead. Most notably, PayPal stock is dirt cheap, trading at only 11 times this year's EPS estimates and below a 10 forward P/E.

This ultra-low valuation likely won't last long, as PayPal deserves a higher multiple due to its leading market position, growth potential, and profitability prospects. Moreover, PayPal surpassed its most recent earnings announcement and could report better-than-expected earnings as we advance. The dynamic of an ultra-low multiple and better-than-anticipated top and bottom line growth should enable sentiment to improve, causing PayPal's multiple to expand and its share price to rise much higher in future years.

Management Change - A Considerable Advantage

One of the most favorable factors concerning PayPal is the new CEO and a changing management team. Under the leadership of Dan Schulman, PayPal booted accounts that didn't "align" with its beliefs. The company became too politicized, serving as a crusade tool for top management and their political agenda instead of focusing on growth and optimization processes. As a result, PayPal found itself in the center of a storm, alienating users, employees, and investors.

The primary objective of PayPal, and any business, is to make money for shareholders. Of course, the company must abide by ethical and moral guidelines and provide a product or a service that benefits society. However, when an organization steps away from its objectives, begins censoring speech, taking on responsibilities it shouldn't, and so on, bad things can happen to its business.

Fortunately, PayPal's issues appear transitory and can be corrected with the right approach. Dan Schulman wasn't up for this job, and his departure from the company may be the best thing for shareholders. PayPal can return to focusing on growing revenues, increasing profits, and delivering returns for shareholders instead of taking on obligations unfavorable to its business in the long run.

PayPal's Revenue Growth to Increase

PayPal revenue trend (businessofapps.com)

First, I must point out PayPal's excellent revenue growth trajectory. PayPal had less than $1B in quarterly revenue in 2010, and now it's scheduled to report about $7.9B, a record for the company in Q4. And the stock is trading 84% below its ATH? What's going on here?

Also, PayPal's earnings revisions have been aggressive and could be overdone. Just as revenue and earnings growth projections were too optimistic around the height of the tech bull market, they may be too pessimistic now. This dynamic should enable PayPal to beat its upcoming earnings announcement (anticipated around February 1st), improving sentiment and resulting in a higher stock price as we advance.

PayPal's Earnings To Increase

PayPal reported $7.42 billion last quarter, a solid increase of 8% over the same quarter one year ago. Also, we must consider that the healthy 8% revenue increase comes during an economic slowdown. Interest rates are the highest in decades, yet PayPal faces minimal adverse effects. As economic growth returns, costs, and inflation moderates, and interest rates move lower, PayPal's growth should improve. Moreover, PayPal's profitability should increase.

EPS Estimates (SeekingAlpha.com)

This year's consensus EPS estimate is $5.55, illustrating PayPal's dirt-cheap P/E ratio of 10.98 relative to this year's lowballed consensus estimate. Also, I want to highlight that PayPal's earnings revision grade is a B (SA Quant System). There's a high probability PayPal can surpass the consensus figure, earning roughly $6 this year, placing its P/E multiple even lower (around 10). It's remarkable how cheap PayPal is.

Additionally, the consensus EPS estimate is $6.16 next year, but PayPal could surpass this depressed, lowballed EPS expectation. Demonstrating modest 10-12% YoY EPS growth, PayPal could deliver $6.50 (or higher) in EPS next year, placing its forward P/E ratio at just 9.3. With this multiple, the market is not valuing PayPal correctly because it's factoring in Armageddon, possible loan defaults, an earnings recession, and I don't know what else. In short, the sentiment surrounding PayPal is ultra-low, and this is typically the ideal time to buy a stock.

PayPal Remains A Top Player In The Industry

As of Q3 2023, PayPal had 428 million active user accounts. While this is a slight decline from the recent 435 million user record, growth will likely return. At about 42% market share, PayPal leads the global online payment services segment. Inside the U.S., PayPal owns nearly 60% of the payment services market.

PayPal's 42% Global Share In Online Payment Processing

Market share payments segment (helpama.com)

In 2022, PayPal processed 22.8 billion global transactions. Despite the transitory decline in active users, PayPal processed a record 6.2 billion transactions last quarter, 11% more than the 5.6 billion processed in the same quarter a year ago. Therefore, PayPal's growth continues despite a slow economic environment. As rates moderate and economic growth improves, PayPal could benefit from a compound effect of increased transaction volume and renewed user growth. Moreover, this phenomenon should lead to better-than-anticipated profitability, multiple expansions, and a significantly higher stock price.

Where PayPal's stock could be in the future:

Source: The Financial Prophet.

The last I checked, PayPal was still a fintech company capitalizing on transactions. It's different from a traditional financial institution with heavy loan exposure and minimal growth. Despite the transitory economic slowdown and other short-term negative factors, PayPal's sales growth should improve, and increased optimization and cost-cutting should expand profitability in future quarters. Therefore, PayPal deserves a higher multiple than its current sub-ten P/E ratio.

I used modest revenue and EPS growth to achieve price projections much higher than PayPal's current stock price. Also, I used a relatively low P/E ratio of below 20 for PayPal in future years. In a bullish scenario, PayPal's sales and earnings growth could be higher than my projections, and its P/E ratio could expand beyond the 20 range, leading to higher stock prices than my model projects. PayPal Holdings, Inc. stock is exceptionally undervalued and remains a strong buy here with an intermediate-term and more extended outlook for its shares.

Risks to PayPal

Despite my bullish projections, there are risks associated with investing in PayPal. Competition may be PayPal's most significant concern. To keep leading in its segment, PayPal needs to remain on top of its game, as big companies like Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN), Apple Inc. (AAPL), and Alphabet Inc. (GOOG, GOOGL) all have alternative payment processing platforms. The primary risk factor is worsening user growth, which could transition to fewer active users, leading to declining transactions. Another concern is lower margins and a potential earnings contraction. There is also the risk of poor performance by new management. Macroeconomic factors and Fed policy could also adversely influence PayPal's business. Investors should consider these and other risks before committing to a PayPal investment.

","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; (NASDAQ:PYPL) stock used to trade around $300, hitting a high of about $310 in 2021. However, poor management decisions, a slow economic environment, high interest rates, worsening sentiment, higher costs, and other factors caused PayPal's stock to melt to a low of just $50 in recent months.PYPL (StockCharts.com)This monstrous decline illustrates an epic drop of 84%. PayPal probably bottomed, and we could see an epic recovery from here. Despite the transitory issues, PayPal remains the preeminent global online payment platform. Also, despite the economic slowdown, PayPal's revenues continue expanding, and we should see healthy revenue growth ahead. Most notably, PayPal stock is dirt cheap, trading at only 11 times this year's EPS estimates and below a 10 forward P/E.This ultra-low valuation likely won't last long, as PayPal deserves a higher multiple due to its leading market position, growth potential, and profitability prospects. Moreover, PayPal surpassed its most recent earnings announcement and could report better-than-expected earnings as we advance. The dynamic of an ultra-low multiple and better-than-anticipated top and bottom line growth should enable sentiment to improve, causing PayPal's multiple to expand and its share price to rise much higher in future years.Management Change - A Considerable AdvantageOne of the most favorable factors concerning PayPal is the new CEO and a changing management team. Under the leadership of Dan Schulman, PayPal booted accounts that didn't \"align\" with its beliefs. However, when an organization steps away from its objectives, begins censoring speech, taking on responsibilities it shouldn't, and so on, bad things can happen to its business.Fortunately, PayPal's issues appear transitory and can be corrected with the right approach. Dan Schulman wasn't up for this job, and his departure from the company may be the best thing for shareholders. PayPal can return to focusing on growing revenues, increasing profits, and delivering returns for shareholders instead of taking on obligations unfavorable to its business in the long run.PayPal's Revenue Growth to IncreasePayPal revenue trend (businessofapps.com)First, I must point out PayPal's excellent revenue growth trajectory. This dynamic should enable PayPal to beat its upcoming earnings announcement (anticipated around February 1st), improving sentiment and resulting in a higher stock price as we advance.PayPal's Earnings To IncreasePayPal reported $7.42 billion last quarter, a solid increase of 8% over the same quarter one year ago. Moreover, PayPal's profitability should increase.EPS Estimates (SeekingAlpha.com)This year's consensus EPS estimate is $5.55, illustrating PayPal's dirt-cheap P/E ratio of 10.98 relative to this year's lowballed consensus estimate. Also, I want to highlight that PayPal's earnings revision grade is a B (SA Quant System). There's a high probability PayPal can surpass the consensus figure, earning roughly $6 this year, placing its P/E multiple even lower (around 10). It's remarkable how cheap PayPal is.Additionally, the consensus EPS estimate is $6.16 next year, but PayPal could surpass this depressed, lowballed EPS expectation. In short, the sentiment surrounding PayPal is ultra-low, and this is typically the ideal time to buy a stock.PayPal Remains A Top Player In The IndustryAs of Q3 2023, PayPal had 428 million active user accounts. While this is a slight decline from the recent 435 million user record, growth will likely return. At about 42% market share, PayPal leads the global online payment services segment. Inside the U.S., PayPal owns nearly 60% of the payment services market.PayPal's 42% Global Share In Online Payment ProcessingMarket share payments segment (helpama.com)In 2022, PayPal processed 22.8 billion global transactions. Moreover, this phenomenon should lead to better-than-anticipated profitability, multiple expansions, and a significantly higher stock price.Where PayPal's stock could be in the future:Source: The Financial Prophet. Therefore, PayPal deserves a higher multiple than its current sub-ten P/E ratio.I used modest revenue and EPS growth to achieve price projections much higher than PayPal's current stock price. Also, I used a relatively low P/E ratio of below 20 for PayPal in future years. In a bullish scenario, PayPal's sales and earnings growth could be higher than my projections, and its P/E ratio could expand beyond the 20 range, leading to higher stock prices than my model projects. PayPal Holdings, Inc. stock is exceptionally undervalued and remains a strong buy here with an intermediate-term and more extended outlook for its shares.Risks to PayPalDespite my bullish projections, there are risks associated with investing in PayPal. Investors should consider these and other risks before committing to a PayPal investment.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":524,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":262100332519608,"gmtCreate":1705024101672,"gmtModify":1705024106030,"author":{"id":"4097562661170010","authorId":"4097562661170010","name":"noobInvestor","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/d104a307a36e9cc236579f70bc63ebba","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4097562661170010","authorIdStr":"4097562661170010"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"hopefully More commonly, this virtual world concept is called the metaverse. Much of the details of how all this will come about are up in the air, but savvy investors know this is a trend that shouldn't be ignored. There are a number of ways to play metaverse trends, but betting on solid companies with a history of success that could benefit from metaverse tailwinds is a great way to profit.

We asked three Fool contributors to provide their favorite stock that will win regardless of how the metaverse materializes. They came up with Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), and Autodesk (NASDAQ:ADSK).

Nvidia: Powering the metaverse and so much more

Danny Vena (Nvidia): There's no denying the potential the metaverse represents. That said, it could take years or even decades for it to reach escape velocity. For that reason, investors looking to capitalize on the metaverse should narrow their focus to industry leaders that have a thriving business, secular tailwinds, and a large addressable market -- aside from any opportunity presented by the coming digital realm. One company that passes that test with flying colors is Nvidia.

The pioneer of graphics processing units (GPUs) is the undisputed industry leader, boasting a dominant 83% share of the discrete desktop GPU market. Nvidia's consistent innovation makes its processors a must-have for any serious gamer. This led to record gaming revenue that surged 61% in fiscal 2022 (ended Jan. 30, 2022).

Parallel processing is the secret sauce that gives GPUs the ability to process a multitude of complex mathematical calculations at lightning-fast speeds -- and no company has been able to harness this raw power better than Nvidia. This will no doubt come into play when creating the graphic reality of the metaverse.

Then there's the data center segment, which supplies processors for artificial intelligence applications, cloud computing, and data centers. More commonly, this virtual world concept is called the metaverse. They came up with Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), and Autodesk (NASDAQ:ADSK).Image source: Getty Images.Nvidia: Powering the metaverse and so much moreDanny Vena (Nvidia): There's no denying the potential the metaverse represents. 30, 2022).Parallel processing is the secret sauce that gives GPUs the ability to process a multitude of complex mathematical calculations at lightning-fast speeds -- and no company has been able to harness this raw power better than Nvidia. This will no doubt come into play when creating the graphic reality of the metaverse. Then there's the data center segment, which supplies processors for artificial intelligence applications, cloud computing, and data centers. Investors might be surprised to learn that Nvidia is also the leading provider of chips used in cloud computing. This situation might be scaring investors out of the market entirely, as the downward trend could continue with uncertainty about inflation, the Fed's pending rate hikes, and the ongoing pandemic adding to the worries.

But if you're an investor with a long time horizon, like me, then now could be the perfect time to add fresh capital to your portfolio. When the market seems overly pessimistic and full of fear is usually the best time to be aggressive.

With $1,000 to invest, look no further than Lululemon (NASDAQ:LULU), Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), and PayPal (NASDAQ:PYPL) as worthy additions to your portfolio.

1. Lululemon

Since February 2017, Lululemon's stock has soared 390%, an outstanding investment if you got in at that time. This performance can be attributed to Lululemon's impressive sales and profit growth of 166% and 175%, respectively, over the past five years. Expanding the store footprint, now at 552 locations, also helped.

This burgeoning apparel brand sports a better gross margin, at 57.2%, than industry leader Nike. A higher metric generally indicates customers' propensity to pay premium prices for a company's products. In Lululemon's case, having a strong direct-to-consumer presence -- a channel that represented 40% of sales in the most recent quarter -- is crucial for brand relevance.

The business first gained popularity as a seller of yoga pants to women, but it has now become a major men's outfitter. The men's segment increased revenue 44% year over year in the fiscal 2021 third quarter, while the women's segment grew 25%. Diversification of revenue sources is a positive sign.

Lululemon shares have lost 30% in value over the past three months as the threat of higher interest rates negatively impacts high-multiple, high-growth stocks. Consequently, investors are presented with a great opportunity to buy shares in this thriving retailer at a meaningful pullback.

2. Netflix

This top streaming stock reported fourth-quarter 2021 financial results on Jan. 20 that disappointed investors. Management guided to 2.5 million net new subscribers in the current quarter, far less than the 6.9 million Wall Street was expecting. But despite the stock being down 17% since that announcement, Netflix has been a massive winner, rising 200% over the past five years.

Quarterly membership growth has certainly been irregular and unpredictable after the pandemic started in the spring of 2020, but the secular shift away from traditional cable TV and toward streaming is not going away. According to data from S&P Global, there were 1.1 billion households worldwide with a cable TV subscription in 2020. This means that Netflix, with its 221.8 million customers today, still has a large runway for expansion in the years ahead.

Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, through his firm Pershing Square Capital Management, took advantage of the market souring on Netflix by scooping up 3.1 million shares. His firm is now a top-20 shareholder in the company. Ackman has a proven track record of pouncing on attractive investment opportunities when the time is right. That's a great endorsement for why you might want to consider owning Netflix stock as well.

3. PayPal

Another major historical winner is fintech behemoth PayPal. Its stock has climbed 379% since the business was spun off from eBay in July 2015. PayPal has long been a pioneer in the digital payments space, and it now counts an impressive 426 million active accounts, of which 34 million are merchants.

I think there are three main factors that make PayPal a special business. For starters, the company's brand exemplifies a relentless focus on security and ease of use. These characteristics, along with massive scale to the tune of $1.25 trillion in total payment volume in 2021, are probably why e-commerce giant Amazon chose to partner with PayPal's Venmo starting this year.

Additionally, PayPal possesses remarkable financial metrics. In 2021, the company's non-generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) operating margin of 24.8% was stellar. Image source: Getty Images.1. Lululemon Since February 2017, Lululemon's stock has soared 390%, an outstanding investment if you got in at that time. 2. Netflix This top streaming stock reported fourth-quarter 2021 financial results on Jan. 3. PayPalAnother major historical winner is fintech behemoth PayPal. And the business continued to prove that it's a cash machine, generating $5.4 billion in free cash flow during the 12-month period. Lastly, the company is not done growing. Along with the Amazon partnership, initiatives to bolster the PayPal mobile app and an acquisition like that of Japanese buy now, pay later specialist Paidy showcase management's huge ambition to one day have 1 billion daily active users. PayPal's shares are off more than 50% from their recent high set in July 2021. The stock currently trades for a lower and more attractive price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of below 40, making it a solid investment right now.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":381,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9081248672,"gmtCreate":1650247695319,"gmtModify":1676534678349,"author":{"id":"4097562661170010","authorId":"4097562661170010","name":"noobInvestor","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/d104a307a36e9cc236579f70bc63ebba","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4097562661170010","authorIdStr":"4097562661170010"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[smile] ","listText":"[smile] ","text":"[smile]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9081248672","repostId":"2228379987","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2228379987","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1650237595,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2228379987?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-04-18 07:19","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Netflix, Tesla Earnings: What to Know in Markets This Week","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2228379987","media":"Yahoo Finance","summary":"This week, earnings season is set to ramp up, offering investors a fresh set of data on the strength of corporate profits in the face of elevated inflationary pressure. Two of the major names reporting","content":"

This week, earnings season is set to ramp up, offering investors a fresh set of data on the strength of corporate profits in the face of elevated inflationary pressure.

Two of the major names reporting this week will include Netflix (NFLX) and Tesla (TSLA), offering an early look at how some of the mega-cap technology companies performed in the early part of the year.

The other names set to report this week will span a range of industries, broadening out from last week's bank-dominated results. Companies including United Airlines (UAL), American Express (AXP), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and Kimberly-Clark (KMB) are each on deck to report in the coming days.

For earnings season so far, results have been mixed, albeit heavily skewed toward the slew of financial names that reported last week including JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Goldman Sachs (GS). About 7% of S&P 500 index components have reported actual Q1 results so far, and 77% of these have topped Wall Street's earnings per share (EPS) estimates, matching the five-year average percentage, according to data from FactSet. The estimated earnings growth rate for the index currently stands at 5.1%, which if carried through the rest of the season would mark the lowest earnings growth rate for the index since the fourth quarter of 2020.

Netflix earnings

Netflix is set to report results on Tuesday, with investors closely watching for further signs of a slowdown in the streaming giant's growth after a pandemic-era surge in subscriber numbers.

Analysts' consensus estimates are looking for Netflix to have added about 2.51 million subscribers for the first quarter, which would mark the least since the second quarter of 2021. This would bring Netflix's total subscribers to just under 225 million. In the same quarter last year, subscribers grew by nearly 4 million.

Though Netflix has already seen subscriber growth slow sharply from a pandemic-era peak, the streaming giant's exit from Russia in early March is also set to further contribute to the deceleration. The Los Gatos, Calif.-based company suspended operations in Russia on March 6 over the country's invasion of Ukraine, and since then, analysts further trimmed their subscriber estimates.

"We now expect paid net adds of 1.45MM, below guide of 2.5MM given Russia suspension (~1MM subs)," Cowen analyst John Blackledge wrote in a note last week. The firm also lowered its price target on Netflix to $590 a share from $600 previously, on account of the lower subscriber growth forecast.

Other analysts also suggested that Netflix's churn, or subscriber losses, could increase in the quarter after the company announced a price increase for subscribers in the U.S. and Canada in January. But revenue pulled from these price increases could also be used to help Netflix build out bigger content slates and drive growth in less saturated markets internationally, others pointed out.

"Netflix appears to be nearing a ceiling on UCAN (U.S. and Canada) subscribers, and is pulling new levers to lower churn," Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter wrote in a note. "Subscription price increases in the West should fuel additional content production and growth in other regions, and our bias is that cash flow will turn positive in 2022 and beyond, as management has guided. However, subscriber growth will likely occur primarily in less developed regions at lower subscription prices, with Western subscribers paying higher rates to fund new content."

"Content dumps, where all episodes of a new season are delivered at the same instant, will likely keep churn high, as price conscious consumers can swap out of Netflix and shift to a competitor service after viewing the content they desire," he added. "Sustainable profit growth should continue so long as Netflix is able to continue raising subscription prices, but competition may limit future price increases."

Overall, Netflix is expected to report GAAP earnings of $2.91 per share on revenue of $7.95 billion, which on the top line would represent just a 11% increase over last year. In the same quarter in 2021, revenue grew 24%.

Shares of Netflix have fallen 43% for the year-to-date in 2022, underperforming against the S&P 500's 7.8% drop over that same period.

Tesla earnings

Meanwhile, another major company set to report results this week will be Tesla.

The electric vehicle maker is scheduled to post its quarterly report Wednesday after market close. Ahead of these results, Tesla announced record deliveries of more than 310,000 during the first three months of this year. That represented a 68% jump over last year's deliveries. Tesla has sought to average 50% growth in annual vehicle deliveries.

Production, however, slipped slightly on a quarter-over-quarter basis, with output coming in at 305,407 for the first quarter compared to 305,840 during the final three months of 2021. Tesla, like many other automakers, has continued to grapple with lingering supply chain challenges and rising input costs, leading CEO Elon Musk to suggest that the company may begin mining its own lithium for batteries as metal prices soar.

"Right now Tesla has a high-class problem of demand outstripping supply with this issue now translating into ~5-6 month delays for Model Ys, some Model 3s in different parts of the globe," Wedbush analyst Dan Ives wrote in a note. "The key to alleviating these issues is centered around the key Giga openings in Austin and Berlin which will alleviate the bottlenecks of production for Tesla globally."

Just earlier this month, Tesla officially began delivering its first Texas-made vehicles from its new Austin Gigafactory. At Tesla's "Cyber Rodeo" launch party on April 7, Musk said the facility was aiming to begin building the Tesla Cybertruck starting in 2023 and has targeted making 500,000 units of the Model Y per year.

The newly made U.S. Gigafactory is set to be pivotal in helping Tesla further ramp production and help meet demand domestically, especially given snarls internationally as Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory closed for weeks due to a COVID outbreak in the region.

"We believe by the end of 2022 Tesla will have the run rate capacity for overall ~2 million units annually from roughly 1 million today," Ives added. "While the China zero COVID policy is causing shutdowns in Shanghai for Tesla (and others) and remains a worrying trend if it continues, seeing the forest through the trees with Austin and Berlin now live and ramping, Musk & Co. will continue to flex its distribution muscles in the EV landscape while many other automakers struggle to get things off the ground."

While Tesla shares have outperformed the S&P 500 for the year-to-date, the stock came under pressure on Thursday after Musk disclosed he made an offer to buy social media company Twitter (TWTR) for $54.20 per share, or about $43 billion in cash. Many have noted Musk would likely have to sell Tesla shares in order to finance the deal if it were to go through.

In Tesla's first-quarter results, Wall Street is looking for the company to post adjusted earnings of $2.27 per share on revenue of $17.85 billion, representing sales growth of 65%.

Economic calendar

Monday: NAHB Housing Market Index, April (77 expected, 79 in March)

Tuesday: Housing starts, March (1.745 million expected, 1.769 million in February); Building permits, March (1.830 million expected, 1.859 million in February)

Wednesday: MBA Mortgage Applications, week ended April 15 (-1.3% during prior week); Existing home sales, March (5.78 million expected, 6.02 million in February); Federal Reserve releases Beige Book

Thursday: Philadelphia Fed Business Outlook index, April (20.5 expected, 27.4 in March); Initial jobless claims, week ended April 16 (185,000 during prior week); Continuing claims, week ended April 9 (1.475 million during prior week); Leading Index, March (0.3% expected, 0.3% in February)

Friday: S&P Global U.S. Manufacturing PMI, April preliminary (57.8 expected, 58.8 in March); S&P Global U.S. Services PMI, April preliminary (58.1 expected, 58.0 in March); S&P Global U.S. Composite PMI, April preliminary (57.7 in March)

Earnings calendar

Monday

Before market open: Synchrony Financial (SYF), Bank of New York Mellon Corp. The estimated earnings growth rate for the index currently stands at 5.1%, which if carried through the rest of the season would mark the lowest earnings growth rate for the index since the fourth quarter of 2020.Netflix earningsNetflix is set to report results on Tuesday, with investors closely watching for further signs of a slowdown in the streaming giant's growth after a pandemic-era surge in subscriber numbers.Analysts' consensus estimates are looking for Netflix to have added about 2.51 million subscribers for the first quarter, which would mark the least since the second quarter of 2021. This would bring Netflix's total subscribers to just under 225 million. In the same quarter last year, subscribers grew by nearly 4 million.Though Netflix has already seen subscriber growth slow sharply from a pandemic-era peak, the streaming giant's exit from Russia in early March is also set to further contribute to the deceleration. The Los Gatos, Calif.-based company suspended operations in Russia on March 6 over the country's invasion of Ukraine, and since then, analysts further trimmed their subscriber estimates.\"We now expect paid net adds of 1.45MM, below guide of 2.5MM given Russia suspension (~1MM subs),\" Cowen analyst John Blackledge wrote in a note last week. The firm also lowered its price target on Netflix to $590 a share from $600 previously, on account of the lower subscriber growth forecast.Other analysts also suggested that Netflix's churn, or subscriber losses, could increase in the quarter after the company announced a price increase for subscribers in the U.S. and Canada in January. But revenue pulled from these price increases could also be used to help Netflix build out bigger content slates and drive growth in less saturated markets internationally, others pointed out.\"Netflix appears to be nearing a ceiling on UCAN (U.S. and Canada) subscribers, and is pulling new levers to lower churn,\" Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter wrote in a note. \"Subscription price increases in the West should fuel additional content production and growth in other regions, and our bias is that cash flow will turn positive in 2022 and beyond, as management has guided. However, subscriber growth will likely occur primarily in less developed regions at lower subscription prices, with Western subscribers paying higher rates to fund new content.\"\"Content dumps, where all episodes of a new season are delivered at the same instant, will likely keep churn high, as price conscious consumers can swap out of Netflix and shift to a competitor service after viewing the content they desire,\" he added. \"Sustainable profit growth should continue so long as Netflix is able to continue raising subscription prices, but competition may limit future price increases.\"Overall, Netflix is expected to report GAAP earnings of $2.91 per share on revenue of $7.95 billion, which on the top line would represent just a 11% increase over last year. In the same quarter in 2021, revenue grew 24%.Shares of Netflix have fallen 43% for the year-to-date in 2022, underperforming against the S&P 500's 7.8% drop over that same period.Tesla earningsMeanwhile, another major company set to report results this week will be Tesla. The electric vehicle maker is scheduled to post its quarterly report Wednesday after market close. Ahead of these results, Tesla announced record deliveries of more than 310,000 during the first three months of this year. That represented a 68% jump over last year's deliveries. Tesla has sought to average 50% growth in annual vehicle deliveries.Production, however, slipped slightly on a quarter-over-quarter basis, with output coming in at 305,407 for the first quarter compared to 305,840 during the final three months of 2021. Tesla, like many other automakers, has continued to grapple with lingering supply chain challenges and rising input costs, leading CEO Elon Musk to suggest that the company may begin mining its own lithium for batteries as metal prices soar.\"Right now Tesla has a high-class problem of demand outstripping supply with this issue now translating into ~5-6 month delays for Model Ys, some Model 3s in different parts of the globe,\" Wedbush analyst Dan Ives wrote in a note. \"The key to alleviating these issues is centered around the key Giga openings in Austin and Berlin which will alleviate the bottlenecks of production for Tesla globally.\"Just earlier this month, Tesla officially began delivering its first Texas-made vehicles from its new Austin Gigafactory. At Tesla's \"Cyber Rodeo\" launch party on April 7, Musk said the facility was aiming to begin building the Tesla Cybertruck starting in 2023 and has targeted making 500,000 units of the Model Y per year. The newly made U.S. Gigafactory is set to be pivotal in helping Tesla further ramp production and help meet demand domestically, especially given snarls internationally as Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory closed for weeks due to a COVID outbreak in the region.\"We believe by the end of 2022 Tesla will have the run rate capacity for overall ~2 million units annually from roughly 1 million today,\" Ives added. \"While the China zero COVID policy is causing shutdowns in Shanghai for Tesla (and others) and remains a worrying trend if it continues, seeing the forest through the trees with Austin and Berlin now live and ramping, Musk & Co. will continue to flex its distribution muscles in the EV landscape while many other automakers struggle to get things off the ground.\"While Tesla shares have outperformed the S&P 500 for the year-to-date, the stock came under pressure on Thursday after Musk disclosed he made an offer to buy social media company Twitter (TWTR) for $54.20 per share, or about $43 billion in cash. Many have noted Musk would likely have to sell Tesla shares in order to finance the deal if it were to go through. In Tesla's first-quarter results, Wall Street is looking for the company to post adjusted earnings of $2.27 per share on revenue of $17.85 billion, representing sales growth of 65%.Economic calendarMonday: NAHB Housing Market Index, April (77 expected, 79 in March)Tuesday: Housing starts, March (1.745 million expected, 1.769 million in February); Building permits, March (1.830 million expected, 1.859 million in February)Wednesday: MBA Mortgage Applications, week ended April 15 (-1.3% during prior week); Existing home sales, March (5.78 million expected, 6.02 million in February); Federal Reserve releases Beige BookThursday: Philadelphia Fed Business Outlook index, April (20.5 expected, 27.4 in March); Initial jobless claims, week ended April 16 (185,000 during prior week); Continuing claims, week ended April 9 (1.475 million during prior week); Leading Index, March (0.3% expected, 0.3% in February)Friday: S&P Global U.S. Manufacturing PMI, April preliminary (57.8 expected, 58.8 in March); S&P Global U.S. Services PMI, April preliminary (58.1 expected, 58.0 in March); S&P Global U.S. Composite PMI, April preliminary (57.7 in March)Earnings calendarMondayBefore market open: Synchrony Financial (SYF), Bank of New York Mellon Corp.
