Are these optimistic bulls correct, and is Tesla headed for a market cap of $1 trillion again?</p><p>Let&#39;s run the numbers and see if this makes sense from a fundamental perspective.</p><h2>An incredible run start to 2023</h2><p>Along with <strong>Nvidia</strong>&#39;s soaring stock, this bull run by Tesla is one of the fastest price returns from a mega-cap company in stock market history. But Tesla shares are still off 39% from their high point during the pandemic bubble of 2021:</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/759a7b29ceb599fce919cb8f358c23db\" alt=\"TSLA data by YCharts\" title=\"TSLA data by YCharts\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"433\"/><span>TSLA data by YCharts</span></p><p>It wouldn&#39;t be surprising to see Tesla&#39;s stock regain a trillion-dollar market cap this year. Investors across the board are extremely optimistic right now, and it would only require another 30% pop from the stock to get there. Over the last month, it has gone up in value by 50%. </p><p>But should an arbitrary price hurdle mean anything to you if you are an investor focused on the long haul? I don&#39;t think so. </p><h2>Who cares about $1 trillion?</h2><p>If you are an investor in Tesla, a trillion-dollar market cap is meaningless to you in a vacuum. All that matters is whether Tesla will generate more in excess cash flow than its current enterprise value at some point in the future, discounted back to today. Cash flow is the <em>only thing</em> that drives shareholder returns in the long run and is what all investors should be focused on. Betting on whether a stock price will jump 30% in a month is just a guessing game and will not work out for you.</p><p>In other words, you need to ask yourself: Will Tesla generate enough profits to warrant a trillion-dollar market cap (or higher) sometime in the near future? Consider that in 2022, Tesla generated a net profit of $12.6 billion on $67.2 billion in revenue, giving it a profit margin of 19%. This is well above the typical margins for automakers of 5% to 10% and is a key reason why Tesla&#39;s stock has soared in recent years. If it can keep a margin of around 20% and grow to hundreds of billions in revenue annually due to the boom in electric vehicle demand, one could argue Tesla&#39;s stock deserves a market capitalization of $1 trillion.</p><p>The problem is, these margins don&#39;t look sustainable and are headed in the wrong direction. Tesla has slashed prices around the world multiple times this year. All else being equal, these cuts will lead to margin compression on the income statement and less cash-flow generation. Car prices have started to fall across the board, and Tesla is feeling the worst of this pain. For reference, overall used car prices are down 4% year over year in the United States. For Tesla, they have fallen 31.6%, which is why it has had to cut its new car prices by 20% or more.</p><p>In the first quarter, Tesla&#39;s net margin fell to 13.3% and could be headed for 10% or lower due to recent price cuts that were not fully reflected in the Q1 results. A 10% margin on $300 billion in revenue in 2030 -- which would give Tesla half of the projected global electric vehicle market -- equates to $30 billion in annual earnings. That would be a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 33, which is well above the long-term market average and would still only be achieved five to 10 years from now.</p><p>If you own or are thinking of buying Tesla shares at close to a trillion-dollar market capitalization, you need to be extremely optimistic about the company&#39;s revenue growth and profit margin potential. Tesla investors seem to think so. After going on a multi-week streak, shares of the electric vehicle (EV) maker are now up a staggering 111% this year, giving it a market capitalization of $825 billion and adding hundreds of billions in value in just a few short months.Yet, the stock is still down significantly from all-time highs in 2021 when, in what seemed like a fever dream at the time, shares went vertical and hit a market cap of over $1.2 trillion. This made Tesla one of the most valuable companies in the world. Optimistic Tesla shareholders like Cathie Wood think the 2021 party is about to get kicked into overdrive again. Her price target of $2,000 compared to the current price of $250 implies that a ton of gains are left for Tesla shareholders. Are these optimistic bulls correct, and is Tesla headed for a market cap of $1 trillion again?Let's run the numbers and see if this makes sense from a fundamental perspective.An incredible run start to 2023Along with Nvidia's soaring stock, this bull run by Tesla is one of the fastest price returns from a mega-cap company in stock market history. But Tesla shares are still off 39% from their high point during the pandemic bubble of 2021:TSLA data by YChartsIt wouldn't be surprising to see Tesla's stock regain a trillion-dollar market cap this year. Investors across the board are extremely optimistic right now, and it would only require another 30% pop from the stock to get there. Over the last month, it has gone up in value by 50%. But should an arbitrary price hurdle mean anything to you if you are an investor focused on the long haul? I don't think so. Who cares about $1 trillion?If you are an investor in Tesla, a trillion-dollar market cap is meaningless to you in a vacuum. All that matters is whether Tesla will generate more in excess cash flow than its current enterprise value at some point in the future, discounted back to today. Cash flow is the only thing that drives shareholder returns in the long run and is what all investors should be focused on. Betting on whether a stock price will jump 30% in a month is just a guessing game and will not work out for you.In other words, you need to ask yourself: Will Tesla generate enough profits to warrant a trillion-dollar market cap (or higher) sometime in the near future? Consider that in 2022, Tesla generated a net profit of $12.6 billion on $67.2 billion in revenue, giving it a profit margin of 19%. This is well above the typical margins for automakers of 5% to 10% and is a key reason why Tesla's stock has soared in recent years. If it can keep a margin of around 20% and grow to hundreds of billions in revenue annually due to the boom in electric vehicle demand, one could argue Tesla's stock deserves a market capitalization of $1 trillion.The problem is, these margins don't look sustainable and are headed in the wrong direction. Tesla has slashed prices around the world multiple times this year. All else being equal, these cuts will lead to margin compression on the income statement and less cash-flow generation. Car prices have started to fall across the board, and Tesla is feeling the worst of this pain. For reference, overall used car prices are down 4% year over year in the United States. For Tesla, they have fallen 31.6%, which is why it has had to cut its new car prices by 20% or more.In the first quarter, Tesla's net margin fell to 13.3% and could be headed for 10% or lower due to recent price cuts that were not fully reflected in the Q1 results. A 10% margin on $300 billion in revenue in 2030 -- which would give Tesla half of the projected global electric vehicle market -- equates to $30 billion in annual earnings. That would be a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 33, which is well above the long-term market average and would still only be achieved five to 10 years from now.If you own or are thinking of buying Tesla shares at close to a trillion-dollar market capitalization, you need to be extremely optimistic about the company's revenue growth and profit margin potential. As a result, Amazon is now scrambling to cut costs, announcing that it would lay off 10,000 corporate employees; it&#39;s closing or canceling construction of dozens of warehouses, and pulling the plug on experiments like Amazon Care and Scout, its home delivery robot.</p><p>Those moves haven&#39;t done much for the stock as shares are still trading around 52-week lows, but things could start looking up for the company in 2023. Keep reading to see why the FAANG stock could rebound sooner than you think.</p><h2>1. The cost cuts will pay off</h2><p>Wall Street often cheers when businesses announce cost cuts or layoffs. Shares of <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/META\">Meta Platforms</a>, for example, jumped when it made public plans for layoffs earlier in November, but Amazon didn&#39;t get the same response.</p><p>However, Amazon is making the necessary moves to right-size its business after it overinvested during the pandemic.</p><p>It&#39;s also become apparent that Amazon has a lot of fat to trim. Business Insider, for example, reported that the company is on track to lose $10 billion this year on Alexa and other devices, and the Alexa division also appears to be the primary focus for the company&#39;s layoffs.</p><p>There are other areas where cost controls would be prudent. Amazon&#39;s international e-commerce division loses money most years, and lost $5.5 billion through the first three quarters of this year. While the company&#39;s more mature international markets are profitable, exercising greater discipline might help make the segment as a whole profitable.</p><p>With the layoffs and other cost-cutting moves, Amazon seems to be striking a more conservative balance from its traditional emphasis on experimentation and willingness to fail, and that should start to pay off for investors on the bottom line next year.</p><h2>2. Core businesses remain highly profitable</h2><p>While much of the attention on Amazon this year has been focused on problems like slowing growth and macroeconomic headwinds, investors seem to be forgetting that Amazon&#39;s most important profit centers continue to print cash.</p><p>Amazon Web Services, the leading cloud infrastructure service, is on track for nearly $25 billion in operating income this year, and its revenue grew 27% in the third quarter even as CFO Brian Olsavsky noted some cautiousness on spending from customers on the recent earnings call.</p><p>As more data, storage, and other needs move to the cloud and AWS, the business should continue to grow -- and it&#39;s already proven itself to be highly profitable with an operating margin of 30%.</p><p>Meanwhile, Amazon&#39;s advertising business is still putting up brisk growth even as top digital advertising platforms like <b>Alphabet </b>and Meta reported sluggish growth in the third quarter. Amazon, which is now the third-largest advertising platform in the U.S. behind Alphabet and Meta, said its advertising segment grew by 25% in the third quarter to $9.5 billion, putting it on an annual run rate of nearly $40 billion in revenue.</p><p>Amazon doesn&#39;t break out margins in advertising, but Alphabet and Meta have historically generated operating margins in the 30% range so it&#39;s reasonable to expect the same from Amazon. That would translate into $12 billion in operating income from $40 billion in revenue.</p><h2>3. The stock is well priced</h2><p>Amazon has never been an easy company to value. Investors seem to believe that the company&#39;s profits are artificially low because it invests in new products and service like Alexa, healthcare, or Amazon Go.</p><p>However, on a price-to-sales basis, the stock is now as cheap as it&#39;s been in eight years at a P/S of less than 2. The last time the stock was this cheap on a revenue multiple, AWS wasn&#39;t even a stand-alone business segment and investors had no idea how profitable it was.</p><p>Similarly, after Amazon guided for just 2% to 8% revenue growth in the fourth quarter, investors seem to expect its growth rate to be permanently impaired, but it&#39;s likely to recover. The company will face easier comparisons next year, the macro headwinds will eventually dissipate, and the markets it competes in, like e-commerce and cloud computing, still have a lot of growth left.</p><p>Market sentiment shifted against the stock due to sluggish growth in the e-commerce sector and fears of a recession this year, but the stock should bounce back once the economic narrative improves.</p><p>Investors seem to be ignoring the company&#39;s growth and profit potential, and that&#39;s a mistake. It has been widely reported that Elon Musk is selling Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) shares so as to complete the acquisition of Twitter (TWTR) (see<i>Reuters</i> articlehere). What&#39;s also somewhat ironic is that on the last earnings conference call a few weeks back, it&#39;s becoming a possibility that the company may actually, for the first time in its history, buy back some of the shares on the open market (see<i>WSJ</i> articlehere).</p><p>In spite of all of the pushing and pulling in the stock over the last few months, has anything changed from a fundamental standpoint?</p><h2>A Fundamental Recap</h2><p>From what we&#39;re seeing, there are no changes in the actual fundamentals of the company itself. If anything, with the potential of a share buyback, this may suggest that the company is confident in its free cash flow and sees the shares as a bargain.</p><p>In a recent discussion of the fundamentals for TSLA, Lyn Alden offered these comments:</p><p>&#34;Tesla is one of the hardest stocks to analyze fundamentally because it trades a lot more so on sentiment than even other stocks of its size. This is a stock that has ranged from a 1.5x price/sales multiple to a 30x price/sales multiple over the past few years. Although it is cut in half from its 2021 highs in terms of its price/sales multiple, I continue to be concerned about Tesla&#39;s valuation as primarily a hardware company.&#34;</p><p>&#34;One of the bull cases for Tesla historically is to argue that it&#39;s more of a software company than a hardware company. However, in terms of the various operational risks and profit margin profiles they have, they clearly fit more in the hardware category. For example, this is the gross margin of two example software companies vs two examples hardware/&#39;car&#39; companies.&#34;</p><p><i>Now, please note Lyn&#39;s conclusion and one of the main benefits of our synergistic methodology in StockWaves:</i></p><p>&#34;So, I generally leave Tesla purely for the technical analysts to work with, because it&#39;s a stock that has such wild valuation fluctuations, that fundamentals are a distant second in terms of analysis compared to sentiment and narratives.&#34;</p><h2>The Prior Setup</h2><p>Back on Sept. 27, we published &#34;Tesla: Catch Me If You Can.&#34; The main takeaway from the piece was that the stock price needed to hold support in a fourth wave pullback and then<i>make a higher high</i>. Note the commentary near the conclusion of the article:</p><p><i>&#34;We see TSLA as needing a higher high in the near term, perhaps near the $340 level. In the bullish case, that would complete wave 5 of the parenthesis wave &#39;1&#39; up. Thereafter, a pullback in parentheses wave &#39;2&#39; would be underway and would typically retrace 38% to 62% of the larger wave &#39;1&#39;.&#34;</i></p><p><i>&#34;The highest probability entry point would be once that larger wave &#39;2&#39; finds its low and starts back up in what would be a third wave to new highs.&#34;</i></p><p>The stock instead broke support at the $260 level and this told us that it would at least retest the recent lows at $210 or even lower.</p><h2>Where Do We Find Ourselves Now?</h2><p>For those who follow our methodology, you will know that we view the markets as fluid, dynamic and non-linear in nature. This means that at any point in time there are various possibilities that can take shape. However, what this does not mean that we present all of these possibilities and then whichever comes to fruition we proclaim ourselves as correct.</p><p>We view the markets from a probabilistic standpoint. A basic stance would be that when the market moves up in a 5 wave structure and back down in a 3 wave structure that holds the prior low or higher, that usually proves to be a buying opportunity.</p><p>It&#39;s at that point that we find ourselves with TSLA. We&#39;re looking for a 5 wave advance to start from the $165-$175 area. Can TSLA move lower than that? Of course it can. But note what we are currently seeing in the near term structure of price.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3d5ddbf584b1dd0c30347e0ebe3df3d1\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"363\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>TradingView</span></p><p>So, should price strike this zone and then<i>move up in 5 waves</i> from there, a 3 wave corrective pullback would be a swing long buying opportunity with stops at that recent low.</p><h2>What&#39;s The Current Context?</h2><p>Elliott Wave theory, when correctly applied, is one of the only methodologies we know of that will provide context to any market at any given point in time. Where do we see TSLA at the moment? This is in a Primary fourth wave pullback that once complete, may indeed lead to new highs in the stock.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/693ade9b3b063722eedfd4e517cd1eeb\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"364\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>TradingView</span></p><h2>Risks and Conclusion</h2><p>It&#39;s plausible to conclude that TSLA is actually in a deeper fourth wave correction that could take it to the $128 - $138 area. While we don&#39;t see a probable setup for that scenario at the moment, it&#39;s possible. However, since we deal in probabilities, we mention it but are not projecting that at this time.</p><p>If we do not see a 5 wave move up from this $175 price target zone, then we will look for another high-probability setup in the near future.</p><h2>What&#39;s Truly Moving This Stock?</h2><p>We might even ask, what truly moves the markets? As humans, we love a narrative. Tell us a story, forge a narrative to explain what is happening at any moment in time. It&#39;s this craving for a framework around market movements that requires regular feeding on news, stories, narratives and the like. A narrative makes us feel like we are in control of our environment.</p><p>It&#39;s the narrative that seems to somehow provide reason to market movements. However, the markets are anything but reasonable. They&#39;re a mass of emotions driven hither and thither by the whims of the crowd.</p><p>We have some fascinating research in the Education section of ElliottWaveTrader.net. Avi Gilburt has gathered a wealth of scientific studies discussing what truly moves the markets. This is an excerpt from an article that asked the question, &#34;Does Man Truly Have Free Will?&#34;:</p><p>&#34;Based upon much recent research, it seems that, as a society, we are moved by our limbic system, which controls the impulsive actions of living creatures (including the &#39;herding&#39; impulse), and which will, subconsciously, often override the neocortex of our brain, which controls our reason. From there, to create a high-probability setup, we want to see an initial 5 wave structure up, then a corrective 3 wave structure down that holds that low struck or higher. What's also somewhat ironic is that on the last earnings conference call a few weeks back, it's becoming a possibility that the company may actually, for the first time in its history, buy back some of the shares on the open market (seeWSJ articlehere).In spite of all of the pushing and pulling in the stock over the last few months, has anything changed from a fundamental standpoint?A Fundamental RecapFrom what we're seeing, there are no changes in the actual fundamentals of the company itself. If anything, with the potential of a share buyback, this may suggest that the company is confident in its free cash flow and sees the shares as a bargain.In a recent discussion of the fundamentals for TSLA, Lyn Alden offered these comments:\"Tesla is one of the hardest stocks to analyze fundamentally because it trades a lot more so on sentiment than even other stocks of its size. This is a stock that has ranged from a 1.5x price/sales multiple to a 30x price/sales multiple over the past few years. Although it is cut in half from its 2021 highs in terms of its price/sales multiple, I continue to be concerned about Tesla's valuation as primarily a hardware company.\"\"One of the bull cases for Tesla historically is to argue that it's more of a software company than a hardware company. However, in terms of the various operational risks and profit margin profiles they have, they clearly fit more in the hardware category. For example, this is the gross margin of two example software companies vs two examples hardware/'car' companies.\"Now, please note Lyn's conclusion and one of the main benefits of our synergistic methodology in StockWaves:\"So, I generally leave Tesla purely for the technical analysts to work with, because it's a stock that has such wild valuation fluctuations, that fundamentals are a distant second in terms of analysis compared to sentiment and narratives.\"The Prior SetupBack on Sept. 27, we published \"Tesla: Catch Me If You Can.\" The main takeaway from the piece was that the stock price needed to hold support in a fourth wave pullback and thenmake a higher high. Note the commentary near the conclusion of the article:\"We see TSLA as needing a higher high in the near term, perhaps near the $340 level. In the bullish case, that would complete wave 5 of the parenthesis wave '1' up. Thereafter, a pullback in parentheses wave '2' would be underway and would typically retrace 38% to 62% of the larger wave '1'.\"\"The highest probability entry point would be once that larger wave '2' finds its low and starts back up in what would be a third wave to new highs.\"The stock instead broke support at the $260 level and this told us that it would at least retest the recent lows at $210 or even lower.Where Do We Find Ourselves Now?For those who follow our methodology, you will know that we view the markets as fluid, dynamic and non-linear in nature. This means that at any point in time there are various possibilities that can take shape. However, what this does not mean that we present all of these possibilities and then whichever comes to fruition we proclaim ourselves as correct.We view the markets from a probabilistic standpoint. A basic stance would be that when the market moves up in a 5 wave structure and back down in a 3 wave structure that holds the prior low or higher, that usually proves to be a buying opportunity.It's at that point that we find ourselves with TSLA. We're looking for a 5 wave advance to start from the $165-$175 area. Can TSLA move lower than that? Of course it can. But note what we are currently seeing in the near term structure of price.TradingViewSo, should price strike this zone and thenmove up in 5 waves from there, a 3 wave corrective pullback would be a swing long buying opportunity with stops at that recent low.What's The Current Context?Elliott Wave theory, when correctly applied, is one of the only methodologies we know of that will provide context to any market at any given point in time. Where do we see TSLA at the moment? This is in a Primary fourth wave pullback that once complete, may indeed lead to new highs in the stock.TradingViewRisks and ConclusionIt's plausible to conclude that TSLA is actually in a deeper fourth wave correction that could take it to the $128 - $138 area. While we don't see a probable setup for that scenario at the moment, it's possible. However, since we deal in probabilities, we mention it but are not projecting that at this time.If we do not see a 5 wave move up from this $175 price target zone, then we will look for another high-probability setup in the near future.What's Truly Moving This Stock?We might even ask, what truly moves the markets? As humans, we love a narrative. Tell us a story, forge a narrative to explain what is happening at any moment in time. On Wednesday, Binance walked away from the deal citing problems with FTX’s finances as well as potential regulatory investigations. Its decision to walk away deepened the ongoing crypto rout, with Bitcoin tumbling to the lowest level in two years.</p><p>While crypto might seem like a niche corner of finance, the saga between two of its top players has upended the crypto ecosystem and is likely to have far-reaching repercussions.</p><p><b>What are Binance and FTX?</b></p><p>They’re two of the biggest crypto exchanges, which are marketplaces where investors buy, sell and store tokens. Binance is the biggest crypto exchange by volume by a long way — and FTX is in the top five, according to crypto data provider CoinMarketCap (which is owned by Binance).</p><p><b>Who runs them?</b></p><p>They’ve also been led by two of the most visible and charismatic people in the crypto world: Binance by Changpeng Zhao (or CZ, as he is known), and FTX by Sam Bankman-Fried (or SBF).</p><p>Formerly a trader at Jane Street, until just a few weeks ago the curly-haired 30-year-old was everywhere in the crypto industry — backing flailing projects including BlockFi, Voyager Digital and Celsius. He counted the likes of Softbank Vision Fund, Singapore wealth fund Temasek and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan as investors.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/535bbd30b95ab09c2c91bada9c2bb89c\" tg-width=\"1000\" tg-height=\"666\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/><span>Sam Bankman-FriedPhotographer: Jeenah Moon/Bloomberg</span></p><p>Zhao is a China-born Canadian citizen who emigrated to Vancouver aged 12 and graduated with a degree in computer science from McGill University in Montreal. He started Binance in 2017 in Shanghai — but the Chinese government banned crypto exchanges the same year. He’s now based in Dubai.</p><p><b>Why did they fall out?</b></p><p>Back in 2019, Binance invested in FTX, then a derivatives exchange. The next year, Binance launched its own crypto derivatives, quickly becoming the leader in the field.</p><p>Tensions rose as the two companies increasingly took divergent tacks with regulators. Bankman-Fried was testifying in the US Congress, while Binance was said to be facing regulatory probes around the world.</p><p>The two companies have also been competing for assets, with both bidding for assets of Voyager Digital. FTX.US, the American affiliate of FTX, won the auction.</p><p>Zhao and Bankman-Fried have been trading barbs on Twitter for months, feuding over issues ranging from lobbying US politicians to allegations of frontrunning trades.</p><p><b>So what just happened in the crypto world?</b></p><p>Over the weekend Zhao tweeted that Binance would be liquidating its holdings of a token known as FTT, which is issued by FTX.</p><p>The tweet followed a story from crypto news outlet CoinDesk saying that Alameda Research, a trading house owned by FTX’s founder Bankman-Fried, had a lot of its assets in FTT token.</p><p>That fueled broader concerns about FTX’s health and investors began to withdraw money. The FTT token plunged. A day before reaching a deal, Bankman-Fried said on Twitter that assets on FTX were “fine” and that “a competitor is trying to go after us with false rumors.”</p><p>On Tuesday, CZ announced a potential takeover of FTX, with due diligence to be conducted “in the coming days.”</p><p>Then late Wednesday afternoon New York time, Binance said it was pulling out of the deal saying its rival’s issues were “beyond our control or ability to help.” Binance executives had discovered a gap between FTX’s liabilities and assets that may amount to more than $6 billion,  a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.</p><p>What’s more, US regulators are investigating whether FTX properly handled customer funds, as well as its relationship with other parts of Bankman-Fried’s crypto empire, including his trading house Alameda Research, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday.</p><p><b>What does this mean for the markets?</b></p><p>It’s injected a lot of uncertainty for investors who are worried about the potential for spreading contagion given the pivotal role FTX and its co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried played in the industry.</p><p>FTT, the utility token of the FTX exchange, collapsed by more than 40% Wednesday following a tumble of more than 70% Tuesday. But just about every digital coin is struggling.</p><p>Bitcoin fell as much as 15% to $15,987 on Wednesday, the least since November 2020, which leaves a lot of holders under water.</p><p><b>What does this mean for FTX users?</b></p><p>That’s unclear. Clients worried about the future of the exchange have already pulled out $430 million worth of Bitcoin in the space of just four days.</p><p><b>How does this affect CZ and SBF?</b></p><p>It’s a huge comedown for SBF, who had previously been seen as one of the most accomplished people in the industry.</p><p>That’s playing out in fortunes, as well. Bankman-Fried’s 53% stake in FTX was worth about $6.2 billion before Tuesday’s takeover, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, based on that fundraising round and the subsequent performance of publicly traded crypto companies. His crypto trading house, Alameda Research, contributed $7.4 billion to his personal fortune.</p><p>The Bloomberg wealth index assumes existing FTX investors, including Bankman-Fried, will be completely wiped out by Binance’s bailout, and that the root of the exchange’s problems stemmed from Alameda. As a result, both FTX and Alameda are given a $1 value. That leaves SBF’s net worth at about $1 billion, down from $15.6 billion heading into Tuesday. He’s had a rough period too, with his fortune down 84% year-to-date, according to the Billionaires Index — but he’s still estimated to be worth $14.9 billion.</p><p>What does this mean in terms of regulation?</p><p>This episode and how quickly it unfolded provide a stark example for regulators who have been concerned about the lack of guardrails in the freewheeling crypto space. Its decision to walk away deepened the ongoing crypto rout, with Bitcoin tumbling to the lowest level in two years.While crypto might seem like a niche corner of finance, the saga between two of its top players has upended the crypto ecosystem and is likely to have far-reaching repercussions.What are Binance and FTX?They’re two of the biggest crypto exchanges, which are marketplaces where investors buy, sell and store tokens. Binance is the biggest crypto exchange by volume by a long way — and FTX is in the top five, according to crypto data provider CoinMarketCap (which is owned by Binance).Who runs them?They’ve also been led by two of the most visible and charismatic people in the crypto world: Binance by Changpeng Zhao (or CZ, as he is known), and FTX by Sam Bankman-Fried (or SBF).Formerly a trader at Jane Street, until just a few weeks ago the curly-haired 30-year-old was everywhere in the crypto industry — backing flailing projects including BlockFi, Voyager Digital and Celsius. The next year, Binance launched its own crypto derivatives, quickly becoming the leader in the field.Tensions rose as the two companies increasingly took divergent tacks with regulators. Bankman-Fried was testifying in the US Congress, while Binance was said to be facing regulatory probes around the world.The two companies have also been competing for assets, with both bidding for assets of Voyager Digital. FTX.US, the American affiliate of FTX, won the auction.Zhao and Bankman-Fried have been trading barbs on Twitter for months, feuding over issues ranging from lobbying US politicians to allegations of frontrunning trades.So what just happened in the crypto world?Over the weekend Zhao tweeted that Binance would be liquidating its holdings of a token known as FTT, which is issued by FTX.The tweet followed a story from crypto news outlet CoinDesk saying that Alameda Research, a trading house owned by FTX’s founder Bankman-Fried, had a lot of its assets in FTT token.That fueled broader concerns about FTX’s health and investors began to withdraw money. The FTT token plunged. A day before reaching a deal, Bankman-Fried said on Twitter that assets on FTX were “fine” and that “a competitor is trying to go after us with false rumors.”On Tuesday, CZ announced a potential takeover of FTX, with due diligence to be conducted “in the coming days.”Then late Wednesday afternoon New York time, Binance said it was pulling out of the deal saying its rival’s issues were “beyond our control or ability to help.” Binance executives had discovered a gap between FTX’s liabilities and assets that may amount to more than $6 billion,  a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.What’s more, US regulators are investigating whether FTX properly handled customer funds, as well as its relationship with other parts of Bankman-Fried’s crypto empire, including his trading house Alameda Research, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday.What does this mean for the markets?It’s injected a lot of uncertainty for investors who are worried about the potential for spreading contagion given the pivotal role FTX and its co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried played in the industry.FTT, the utility token of the FTX exchange, collapsed by more than 40% Wednesday following a tumble of more than 70% Tuesday. But just about every digital coin is struggling.Bitcoin fell as much as 15% to $15,987 on Wednesday, the least since November 2020, which leaves a lot of holders under water.What does this mean for FTX users?That’s unclear. That’s because stocks have rallied after every single mid-term election since the Second World War. It’s no flash-in-the-pan effect either. According to the data, the S&P 500 shows gains for up to a year after a mid-term vote. And with the markets going into election day after 10 months of losses, there’s plenty of room for them to climb back up.In the words of Oppenheimer’s chief investment strategist John Stoltzfus, “Market history suggests to us that regardless of which party is considered the victor in the mid-term elections a rally of some kind is likely in the equity markets near term.”While Stoltzfus acknowledges that there are multiple issues which will drive markets into next year, the immediate post-election period should see a rally in stocks. Chalk it up to clarity; investors never like uncertain situations, and putting the elections behind us will add a degree of predictability to the next few months.So let’s assume that we’re in for a short-term rally in stocks. The question then become, which stocks to pick? And that’s where the stock analysts at Oppenheimer can help us. They’ve followed Stoltzfus’ lead, and picked out three equities that are likely to gain as the markets pick up some upward momentum. We’ve used the TipRanks platform to find out what makes them tick. Let’s take a closer look.DoorDash, Inc.(DASH)The first Oppenheimer pick is DoorDash, a Silicon Valley company in the world of online food ordering and food delivery services. The company boasts a market share of approximately 56%, making it the undisputed leader in the on-demand delivery niche. The service is accessed through a mobile app, and operates in 27 countries around the world, and from the beginning of 2020 through to 3Q22, the company has generated over $70 billion in sales for affiliated merchants along with more than $25 billion in cumulative earnings for its drivers.Taking a look at the 3Q numbers, we find that DoorDash has reported rising revenue in each of the last five quarters. The current top line is $1.7 billion, up 33% year-over-year. This was supported by 27% y/y growth in total orders, to 439 million for the quarter, and a 30% gain in marketplace gross order volume, which hit $13.5 billion.The total order number was the key for the company, as it exceeded Wall Street’s forecast of 433 million. Investors and analysts were also pleased by the revenue number, which came in above the $1.63 billion expectation.These beats compensated for a deeper-than-expected earnings loss. The net EPS loss of 77 cents was significantly higher than the 60-cent forecast.Oppenheimer’s 5-star analystJason Helfsteinlooks at the half-full glass and upgrades DoorDash shares from Neutral to Outperform (i.e. Buy). Helfstein also sets a $70 price target to indicate room for ~35% upside in the coming year.Backing his stance, Helfstein wrote, “Increased disclosure shows improving US restaurant margins… As such, we forecast ’25 EBITDA of $1.5B, with GOV margins of 1.8%, up from 0.7% in ’22E. We forecast US restaurant contribution margins improving from 5.7% in ’22E to 6.1% in ’25E, with Int’l. & US non-restaurant contribution margins improving from -13.4% in ’22E to -2.4% in ’25E—based on 4–5% incremental margins. 3Q showed continued strength, despite uncertain macro.”“We believe DoorDash can leverage its early focus on suburban markets to gain traction in Tier-1 markets and continue expanding its current market leader position,” the analyst summed up.Overall, there are 14 recent analyst reviews on file for DoorDash and they break down to 8 Buys against 6 Holds, for a Moderate Buy consensus rating. The stock is currently trading for $52.27 and has an $84.07 average price target; this implies ~61% potential gain in the next 12 months.Playa Hotels & Resorts(PLYA)The leisure industry was hit hard by the COVID lockdowns, but it has been enjoying a renaissance since last year, when economies began opening up and travel restrictions were loosened. The second stock our list, Playa Hotels, is owner, operator, and developer of hotel and resort locations in Mexico and the Caribbean. The company has 25 locations, at prime beachfronts, in Mexico, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic, with a total of 9,352 rooms.The company reported its 3Q22 numbers earlier this week, and key figure to focus on was the occupancy rate. Playa reported that 73.8% of its rooms were occupied during the third quarter, a huge increase from the 59.3% reported in the year-ago period. The company’s total revenue, of $204.6 million, was up 35% year-over-year, and the adjusted net income came to $5.9 million – which compared favorably to the $13.7 million adjusted net loss in 3Q21. The company has been benefiting from high consumer demand for leisure travel and activities, post-COVID.Covering PLYA for Oppenheimer, analyst Tyler Batory takes an upbeat view of the company, noting: “We continue to think PLYA is well positioned to take advantage of leisure travel demand and should benefit from increased recognition of the all-inclusive business model by consumers. We also think it’s a positive that the company has not seen an increase in cancellation activity or a slowdown in booking demand outside of hurricane-related activity.”Following from this optimistic outlook, Batory gives the stock an Outperform (i.e. Buy) rating, and his $13 price target suggests it has a robust one-year gain of 121% ahead of it.This international resort operator has picked up 3 recent reviews on Wall Street – and those reviews are all positive, making for a unanimous Strong Buy consensus rating on the stock. Shares in PLYA are trading for $5.88 and the $12.33 average price target implies a 110% gain in the year ahead.BioMarin Pharmaceutical (BMRN)We’ll now shift to the biotech sector, where BioMarin Pharmaceutical is a pioneer in the treatment of rare genetic diseases. The company is working on the development and commercialization of new therapeutic agents for genetic-based diseases that cause debilitating or life-threatening conditions, and that currently lack any effective treatments.In addition to an active research pipeline, BioMarin also has a line-up of seven approved drugs currently on the market. These products generated over $464 million in revenues in 3Q22, out of $505 million total at the top line. The product revenues were up 26% year-over-year, and drove a total y/y revenue gain of 24%.The company’s lead revenue generator is Vimizim, a treatment for the genetic enzyme disorder Morquio A, which causes severe damage to bone, cartilage, and ligament tissues. BioMarin realized $155.5 million in Q3 revenue from Vimizim, up 14% from the year-ago period. The company’s drug Naglazyme showed the largest y/y revenue gain among the product line. This medication, a treatment for the progressive wasting condition Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome, saw revenues grow 40% y/y to reach $99.5 million.Turning to the company’s pipeline, the leading drug candidate is valoctocogene roxaparvovec, branded as roctavian. This company is facing even more challenges than the other high-profile China-based EV makers with U.S. stock market listings.</p><p>It’s not an opportune move to try and call a bottom in this stock, as it’s likely to become “cheaper” from here. Here’s why.</p><p><b>XPEV Stock and its Discounted Valuation</b></p><p>XPeng stock currently has a P/S ratio of around 1.9. <b>Li Auto</b>(NASDAQ:<b>LI</b>) and <b>Nio</b>(NYSE:<b>NIO</b>), the other two China EV stocks popular with U.S. investors, each have P/S ratios around 3.5.</p><p>Given that analyst forecasts call for this company to experience a similarly-high level of sales growth next year, this may at glance create the assumption that XPEV stock is mispriced. However, take a closer look at the details, and that’s clearly not the case.</p><p>XPeng isn’t the only Chinese EV maker facing challenges. China’s economic slowdown has only started to affect EV demand, but the situation could intensify in the coming months. As<i>Barron’s</i>reported on Oct 1., the latest delivery figures for Li Auto and Nio may signal that both names are struggling to take their sales to the next level.</p><p>But while Li and Nio may be facing growth challenges, XPeng’s deliveries are in decline. As I discussed on Sep. 30, from June through August, XPeng’s monthly vehicle delivery numbers dropped from15,295 to 9,578.</p><p>For September, deliveries fell yet again, to just 8,468 vehicles. Declining sales, plus worsening fundamentals, justify XPEV’s discounted (and declining) valuation.</p><p><b>Why XPeng Could Keep Dropping</b></p><p>It’s not only falling delivery numbers that make XPEV stock a less appealing opportunity than its peers. This company is also facing the issue of widening losses.</p><p>Over the past year, XPeng’s quarterly net losses more than doubled, from$185 million to $403.1 million, or from 23 cents to 47 cents per share. Sell-side estimates call for GAAP losses to come in at a similar amount this quarter (48 cents).</p><p>If the company fails to make progress in getting out of the red, shares will continue to trend lower. There’s a good chance of this happening for two reasons.</p><p>First, it’s debatable whether the launch of XPeng’s latest model, the G9 Flagship SUV, will help to reverse the aforementioned deliveries/sales decline.</p><p>So far, sales of newer models have failed to counter declining sales among older models. This could continue to be the case, especially given decreasingly-favorable conditions in the Chinese EV market. It’ll be difficult for Xpeng to narrow losses if sales keep dropping.</p><p>Second, despite the challenges in its home market, XPeng is moving ahead with plans to expand into Europe. This will likely create initial losses, piled atop continued losses for the company’s existing operations.</p><p><b>Bottom Line on XPEV Stock</b></p><p>Based on the most recently reported financial and delivery figures for XPeng, there’s little to indicate that this EV maker is on the verge of turning a corner. In fact, there’s a lot more out there pointing toward continued deterioration of its fundamentals. This in turn will drive a further move lower for shares.</p><p>That’s not to say this stock is heading to zero. XPeng currently has sufficient cash and short-term investments on hand (totaling $4.82 billion) to sustain itself for the next few years.</p><p>However, after falling nearly 75% over the past twelve months, depending on the severity of China’s in-progress economic downturn, another 75% drop may be in the cards.</p><p>XPEV stock has already hurt plenty of bottom-fishers, who’ve attempted to catch this “falling knife” since the summer. As it stands to continue being a “falling knife” situation, don’t become XPEV’s next victim. The company is a third-party manufacturer for chip leaders like <b>Apple</b>, <b>Nvidia</b>, and dozens of other companies designing their own chips.</p><p>Designing a great chip is great, but someone has to make the chip, and that&#39;s where Taiwan Semiconductor comes in.</p><p>You can see in the chart below that the company is now trading at just 13.2 times earnings, and has grown revenue and net income 91.5% and 140.4% respectively in the last three years.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2e668a2f2fb90e6a05bd7f422329d4cf\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>TSM Market Cap data by YCharts</span></p><p>What&#39;s fascinating about the company&#39;s place in chip manufacturing is that there&#39;s no clear competitor at the bleeding edge of manufacturing. <b>Intel</b> is years behind, <b>GlobalFoundries</b> is much smaller, and <b>AMD</b> has a more integrated business model. For chip companies that don&#39;t own fabrication facilities, Taiwan Semiconductor is still the go-to manufacturer if you&#39;re designing at the cutting edge.</p><p>Given the company&#39;s strong strategic position, technology, growth, and profitability, I think this could be the first of these companies to reach $1 trillion in value.</p><h2>Disney</h2><p>The last five years haven&#39;t been quite as smooth sailing at Disney. The company has seen cable connections decline, streaming has been an enormous investment, and the pandemic had a huge effect on both theaters and theme parks. But Disney is positioned for a decade of growth.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4102ed8cca7a57381df2423238b66694\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>DIS Market Cap data by YCharts</span></p><p>Disney now technically has more subscribers than <b>Netflix</b> when you add together Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu. So, it&#39;s a leader in next-generation media distribution.</p><p>Investors haven&#39;t liked the money being spent on streaming, but the payoff may be getting better very soon. Disney announced an advertising tier, but instead of offering a lower-cost version of Disney+ with ads, it is keeping the same $8 per month price but adding advertising, increasing the price to $11 per month if you want no ads.</p><p>Disney&#39;s ability to create compelling content and then monetize it through what I call a waterfall of businesses -- from the theater to streaming to merchandise to theme parks -- is unmatched in media. The company needs to do well to reach a $1 trillion valuation by 2030, but I think it can get there.</p><h2>Adobe</h2><p>Adobe has long made valuable software for designers, but it&#39;s now poised to become the operating system of the design and programming community if it can complete the acquisition of Figma.</p><p>You can see below that Adobe&#39;s business of licensing software to creators has been a growth machine over the last decade. But it&#39;s creating tools that people use to create assets, not a platform they&#39;re using to collaborate on. That&#39;s why the acquisition of Figma is a big deal.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4993ed493e311f71a565023c2e41fdad\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>ADBE Revenue (TTM) data by YCharts</span></p><p>You can see above that Adobe currently trades for 28.5 times trailing earnings, and Figma should help with future growth. But for Adobe to become a $1 trillion company, it needs to lean into Figma&#39;s multi-user platform to become a real juggernaut. I think it can do that, pulling not only graphic designers but programmers, project managers, and many more into the Figma ecosystem. Don&#39;t be surprised if products like Photoshop and Illustrator become add-ons to Figma, not the other way around.</p><p>Now that Adobe has a potential platform solution, the sky is the limit for the company&#39;s value. That&#39;s why I think this could be a $1 trillion company by the end of the decade.</p><h2>Thinking big</h2><p>There&#39;s no guarantee any of these companies will reach the heights of a $1 trillion company, but they all have the foundation needed to get there. The company is a third-party manufacturer for chip leaders like Apple, Nvidia, and dozens of other companies designing their own chips.Designing a great chip is great, but someone has to make the chip, and that's where Taiwan Semiconductor comes in.You can see in the chart below that the company is now trading at just 13.2 times earnings, and has grown revenue and net income 91.5% and 140.4% respectively in the last three years.TSM Market Cap data by YChartsWhat's fascinating about the company's place in chip manufacturing is that there's no clear competitor at the bleeding edge of manufacturing. The company has seen cable connections decline, streaming has been an enormous investment, and the pandemic had a huge effect on both theaters and theme parks. But Disney is positioned for a decade of growth.DIS Market Cap data by YChartsDisney now technically has more subscribers than Netflix when you add together Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu. So, it's a leader in next-generation media distribution.Investors haven't liked the money being spent on streaming, but the payoff may be getting better very soon.
