Shares","content":"

What happened

Fintech stocks are also enjoying some gains after a tough few months of trading. Shares of the artificial intelligence (AI) powered lender Upstart Holdings(NASDAQ:UPST)traded 12% higher today, Brazilian fintech Nu Holdings(NYSE:NU)traded nearly 15% higher, and Brazilian payments company StoneCo(NASDAQ:STNE)traded more than 5% higher.

So what

As has now been discussed many times, the markets turned ugly starting in early November as the Federal Reserve got more serious about combatting the rising inflation being seen in higher daily prices. The Fed began tapering its billions of additional monthly bond purchases that it first started making at the beginning of the pandemic. It indicated it would begin raising its federal funds rate, the agency's benchmark overnight lending rate, likely starting in March and would then likely proceed to do so multiple times in 2022.

The Fed also hinted that it may look to shrink its balance sheet, which now has trillions of dollars on it. That means the Fed would be removing liquidity from the market. All of this spooked investors who in the middle of 2021 might have thought that rate hikes wouldn't begin until the very end of 2022 at the earliest. Since Nov. 1, the Nasdaq is down 7.5% but had been down around 14% at one point in January.

During this time period, tech and fintech stocks got hammered. Since Nov. 1, Upstart stock is down close to 38%, StoneCo is down about 10%, and Nu is down about 3%, although Nu only started trading in early December. There doesn't seem to be anything, in particular, driving the move higher for these stocks today -- it mostly seems like investors are buying the dip after some intense selling.

I'm reluctant to believe that the volatility is over, though. Tomorrow, the latest data for the consumer price index, which tracks a range of prices of everyday goods and services used by consumers, will be out for January. The market is expecting to see a 0.5% increase from December and a 7.3% jump year over year. If the CPI comes in higher than expected the market may sell off on worries that inflation is rising too fast and may cause a recession. If it comes in lower than expected, the market may rise on beliefs that inflation fears are overblown.

Now what

The other thing about these three stocks, in particular, is that Upstart, Nu, and StoneCo have yet to report their latest earnings results for the fourth quarter and full year of 2021. So far, the market has not been lenient on earnings. Tech companies that beat analyst earnings and revenue estimates, but implied lower revenue and profits than analysts had been forecasting for 2022, have gotten hammered. There is a high bar for tech companies right now because the market is now taking a much tougher approach to growth multiples. Upstart will report on Feb. 15.

Then, of course, the Fed could say or hint about something at the Fed's next meeting in March that may spook the fragile state of the markets. It's nice to get some relief over the past few days, but I think a lot of volatility lies ahead and that the market is still not in a friendly mood.

I would recommend focusing on valuations and trying to pick growth stocks that you still like, but have not risen too far and too fast in terms of their valuations. For instance, Nu Holdings rising back up to a $46.7 billion market cap definitely seems like too high of a valuation right now.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Shares of Upstart, Nu Holdings, and StoneCo Are All Rising
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy Shares of Upstart, Nu Holdings, and StoneCo Are All Rising\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-02-10 11:01 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
What happenedFintech stocks are also enjoying some gains after a tough few months of trading. With the Federal Reserve stating its intention to raise interest rates this year to pump the brakes on soaring inflation, investors could be worried that an economic slowdown is possible in the not-too-distant future. In that case, figuring out how to position your portfolio is a top priority.

Let's look at why Costco Wholesale , Home Depot , and O'Reilly are three stocks you'll want to buy during a recession.

1. Costco Wholesale

Selling everything from groceries and electronics to furniture and jewelry at some of the lowest prices around, warehouse-club operator Costco makes for an extremely low-risk investment during economic downturns, a time when people look to stretch their budgets as much as possible.

After the pandemic first struck the U.S. in March 2020, consumers flocked to their nearest Costco location to get all of their shopping done in one trip. And the growth still hasn't fallen off. In the month of December, Costco grew same-store sales, or comps, 14.5% year over year.

Costco's massive scale and resulting purchasing power -- with $196 billion in fiscal 2021 revenue and 828 warehouses -- afford it the ability to negotiate favorable terms with vendors. But because the business keeps prices as low as possible, its margins on merchandise sales are intentionally slim. Costco's 62.5 million membership households (as of Nov. 21, 2021) are the solution, driving customer engagement and loyalty, and providing the company with stable, recurring revenue.

If another recession is on the horizon, I'm certain that Costco will continue to be a top shopping destination. This makes it a no-brainer stock to own during tough times.

2. Home Depot

Another top-notch retail stock to consider in an economic downturn is home-improvement giant Home Depot. What makes this business, which generated trailing-12-month sales of $148 billion, particularly appealing is that it serves both do-it-yourself (DIY) and professional customers extremely well.

At the onset of the pandemic, the DIY segment saw a surge in demand as people took on simpler projects. But over the past three quarters, the pro business has outpaced DIY, demonstrating homeowners' renewed comfort with strangers coming into their homes to complete complex renovations. This flexibility is key when the economy takes a turn.

In a weak economy, people are less inclined to consider moving and instead will focus on renovation projects to improve their living quarters. Management's goal to "lead the market down and lag going up" when it comes to pricing strategy shows how the company focuses intensely on offering customers as much value as possible.

As a result, Home Depot is a safe and dependable business for investors to own in both good and bad economic times. The company is a critical part of the housing industry, reliably there for customers and whatever projects they need to complete. And the stock has been a huge winner, soaring 163% over the past five years.

3. O'Reilly

Perhaps the most recession-proof company on this list is O'Reilly Automotive. The aftermarket auto parts chain has proven its all-weather appeal, especially during the financial crisis more than a decade ago. In 2008 and 2009, revenue jumped 41.8% and 35.5%, respectively, year over year. If another recession happens in the near future, shareholders have absolutely nothing to worry about.

People will look to extend the lives of their existing vehicles as opposed to buying new ones when the economy takes a turn for the worse. We still need to get to work and school as well as complete errands, all of which require a functioning car. This sense of customer urgency puts O'Reilly and its 5,740 domestic stores in a beneficial position to serve their needs.

What's more, strong industry tailwinds should support the company's growth in the years ahead. With the Federal Reserve stating its intention to raise interest rates this year to pump the brakes on soaring inflation, investors could be worried that an economic slowdown is possible in the not-too-distant future. In that case, figuring out how to position your portfolio is a top priority.Let's look at why Costco Wholesale , Home Depot , and O'Reilly are three stocks you'll want to buy during a recession.1. Costco Wholesale Selling everything from groceries and electronics to furniture and jewelry at some of the lowest prices around, warehouse-club operator Costco makes for an extremely low-risk investment during economic downturns, a time when people look to stretch their budgets as much as possible. After the pandemic first struck the U.S. in March 2020, consumers flocked to their nearest Costco location to get all of their shopping done in one trip. And the growth still hasn't fallen off. In the month of December, Costco grew same-store sales, or comps, 14.5% year over year.Costco's massive scale and resulting purchasing power -- with $196 billion in fiscal 2021 revenue and 828 warehouses -- afford it the ability to negotiate favorable terms with vendors. This makes it a no-brainer stock to own during tough times.2. Home Depot Another top-notch retail stock to consider in an economic downturn is home-improvement giant Home Depot. What makes this business, which generated trailing-12-month sales of $148 billion, particularly appealing is that it serves both do-it-yourself (DIY) and professional customers extremely well.At the onset of the pandemic, the DIY segment saw a surge in demand as people took on simpler projects. But over the past three quarters, the pro business has outpaced DIY, demonstrating homeowners' renewed comfort with strangers coming into their homes to complete complex renovations. This flexibility is key when the economy takes a turn.In a weak economy, people are less inclined to consider moving and instead will focus on renovation projects to improve their living quarters. Management's goal to \"lead the market down and lag going up\" when it comes to pricing strategy shows how the company focuses intensely on offering customers as much value as possible. As a result, Home Depot is a safe and dependable business for investors to own in both good and bad economic times. The company is a critical part of the housing industry, reliably there for customers and whatever projects they need to complete. And the stock has been a huge winner, soaring 163% over the past five years.3. O'ReillyPerhaps the most recession-proof company on this list is O'Reilly Automotive. The aftermarket auto parts chain has proven its all-weather appeal, especially during the financial crisis more than a decade ago. In 2008 and 2009, revenue jumped 41.8% and 35.5%, respectively, year over year. If another recession happens in the near future, shareholders have absolutely nothing to worry about.People will look to extend the lives of their existing vehicles as opposed to buying new ones when the economy takes a turn for the worse. We still need to get to work and school as well as complete errands, all of which require a functioning car. This sense of customer urgency puts O'Reilly and its 5,740 domestic stores in a beneficial position to serve their needs. What's more, strong industry tailwinds should support the company's growth in the years ahead. Americans drive more miles each year, and the average age of vehicles on the road continues to climb. Both create increased wear and tear on cars, a boon for O'Reilly's business. For 2021, same-store sales are expected to rise between 10% and 12%. Meanwhile, the gross margin is expected to exceed 52% and free cash flow should top $2 billion -- superb financial metrics by any measure.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":445,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9004759315,"gmtCreate":1642696254363,"gmtModify":1676533737104,"author":{"id":"4099285884763860","authorId":"4099285884763860","name":"Jack_JJ","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":5,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4099285884763860","authorIdStr":"4099285884763860"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great ","listText":"Great ","text":"Great","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9004759315","repostId":"1122582573","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1122582573","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1642691790,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1122582573?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-01-20 23:16","market":"us","language":"en","title":"WSB Stocks Rallied in Morning Trading, with Gamestop Rising Over 5% and AMC Rising Over 7%","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1122582573","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"WSB Stocks Rallied in Morning Trading, with Gamestop Rising Over 5% and AMC Rising Over 7%.","content":"

WSB Stocks Rallied in Morning Trading, with Gamestop Rising Over 5% and AMC Rising Over 7%.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; takes a turn for the worse, you'll be smart to consider these reliable businesses.","content":"

The economy today is in a strong position, but you wouldn't be able to tell that by observing the S&P 500's 6% decline in January.

Americans drive more miles each year, and the average age of vehicles on the road continues to climb. Both create increased wear and tear on cars, a boon for O'Reilly's business.

For 2021, same-store sales are expected to rise between 10% and 12%. Meanwhile, the gross margin is expected to exceed 52% and free cash flow should top $2 billion -- superb financial metrics by any measure.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Stocks to Buy During a Recession
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Stocks to Buy During a Recession\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-02-04 10:23 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The economy today is in a strong position, but you wouldn't be able to tell that by observing the S&P 500's 6% decline in January.
