That makes it still look pricey, even in today&#39;s generally downward-trending stock market.</p><p>This raises a key question for potential investors. Which is more important: Tesla&#39;s innovation or its valuation? In other words, if you&#39;re looking to invest in stocks as the market swoons, which looks like a better buy, Tesla or the entire <b>Nasdaq</b>?</p><h2>The case for Tesla</h2><p>According to data collected by InsideEVs, Tesla is still registering more all-electric cars than any other manufacturer, with more than 564,000 vehicles registered in the first half of 2022. In addition to its market share lead, Tesla expects that its investment in its Gigafactories will dramatically lower its costs when it comes to batteries. Since batteries are such an important component of both an electric car&#39;s cost and its range, that investment should help Tesla have a cost advantage over other manufacturers.</p><p>In addition, since Tesla has <i>always </i>been an all-electric vehicle manufacturer, it doesn&#39;t have the legacy costs and structures that traditional gas-powered-car companies have in place. Those structures were built up over decades to optimize for manufacturing gas-powered cars. While that helps with scale and efficiency, those same factors often get in the way of helping a company be more nimble and change with the times. That may hinder other car companies&#39; ability to play catch-up with Tesla on electric cars.</p><p>A cost advantage on batteries plus a business model built from the ground up for electric vehicles certainly puts Tesla in a great spot as the world shifts to a higher proportion of electric cars.</p><h2>The case against Tesla</h2><p>Of course, Tesla faces challenges in the electric-vehicle space as well. First, it is losing its early mover advantage. While that InsideEVs report still had Tesla in the lead when it came to electric-vehicle registrations, it also indicated that Tesla&#39;s market share of EVs was 19% -- and shrinking. That means competition is getting a stronger foothold -- and gaining their <i>own </i>economies of scale to improve their ability to effectively operate in the electric car space.</p><p>Second, according to the JD Power Initial Quality Survey for 2022, Tesla&#39;s initial quality is below average in the automobile industry. It scored 226 problems per 100 vehicles, versus 180 problems per 100 vehicles for the typical car. In a world where electric cars are premium-priced to gas-powered ones to cover those battery costs, having below-average initial quality makes it tough to command a premium price. That&#39;ll be especially true as consumer choice continues to increase as competition intensifies.</p><p>Then, of course, there&#39;s Tesla&#39;s valuation. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, worldwide car sales were around 74.9 million units in 2019, up from an average around 71 million throughout the 2010s. Tesla&#39;s $862.7 billion market cap gives it a price tag of around $11,500 <i>per</i> <i>car sold by all manufacturers in 2019</i>, worldwide. To justify that kind of valuation, Tesla would need to become a dominant player across the entire industry, not just a fast mover (and one losing share) in just a segment of it.</p><p>Is it possible that Tesla could get there? Maybe, but its shares are trading as though that has already happened. As a result, I&#39;m not sure where future shareholder returns would come from, even if the company does reach that pinnacle of success.</p><h2>What about the entire Nasdaq?</h2><p>On the flip side, the Nasdaq as a whole currently trades at about 22 times the trailing earnings of its constituent companies, thanks to a fairly substantial market decline in 2022. While a little higher than a value investor would like to see, it&#39;s not that far out of whack with its pre-pandemic trends .</p><p>In addition, the <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ONEQ\">Fidelity Nasdaq Composite Index ETF </a>, which attempts to track the Nasdaq, offers investors a chance to buy the index for a reasonably low 0.21% expense ratio. That makes buying shares in the entire Nasdaq about as easy as buying shares in Tesla, without having to sacrifice a huge part of your overall potential return to overhead fees.</p><h2>Which is a better buy?</h2><p>At a lower valuation -- 22 times for the Nasdaq composite, versus 90 times earnings for Tesla -- the Nasdaq wins out as a better buy on valuation. When it comes to business prospects, Tesla clearly has room to grow as the electric-vehicle market does. With its stock price already reflecting the anticipated success from that growth, however, it&#39;s hard to justify paying the premium price over the overall index.</p><p>Overall, the decline in the overall market has opened up an opportunity to where the entire Nasdaq looks like a better buy at the moment than Tesla does. You&#39;ll have more Tesla shares after the stock split</h2><p>A stock split increases the number of shares outstanding, giving investors more shares in their account for every one share they previously owned.</p><p>After a stock split, the value of each share will be reduced to a lower price. This makes it easy for more retail investors to get their hands on a whole share of stock, because the stock price appears more affordable. If you&#39;re already an investor, your shares will be split into bite-sized pieces, but the total value of your shares will not increase.</p><p>Let&#39;s say you have one share of Tesla&#39;s stock. On the day of the 3-for-1 stock split, the company will grant you two additional shares. Each share in your portfolio would be valued at one-third the price of the original share. If one Tesla share is trading at $900 before the stock split, you&#39;ll have three Tesla shares valued at $300 each after the stock split. As you can see, the total value of your shares is still $900.</p><p>Here&#39;s how many shares you will have after the stock split based on the number of shares you have on record as of Aug. 17. All you have to do is look at the number of shares you have now, and multiply the total by three. It has reported strong operational and financial results for several quarters straight, but its shares are down over 60% over the last yearnonetheless. To be fair, the Street chastised the stock over concerns regarding its growth momentum, but things aren&#39;t all that bad. In this article, I&#39;ll attempt to have a balanced discussion over why Palantir makes for a good buying opportunity on dips, in spite of the floating concerns. Let&#39;s take a closer look at it all.</p><p><b>The Growth Trajectory</b></p><p>Let me start by saying that the market isn&#39;t entirely wrong by selling off Palantir. Its management had previously assured investors of their growth being at breakneck rates but they later tempered revenue growth forecasts to 30%-plus rates. Fast forward to May 2022, they&#39;re now guiding Q2 revenue to grow just 25% year over year due to the challenging macroeconomic environment. They reported flat government revenue on a sequential basis, which fuels speculation that Palantir may have hit its growth saturation point.</p><p>Under normal circumstances, 20%-plus growth rates are deemed healthy and not worth chiding a company&#39;s management over. But Palantir&#39;s lowering of their growth guidance, time and again, seems like its top brass is just moving the goal post without actually delivering on its targets. It casts doubt on the company&#39;s long-term growth story and makes one wonder about how many more such downward revisions would be there in its future quarters.</p><p>So, I empathize with investors who&#39;re questioning Palantir&#39;s management, the company&#39;s growth prospects and rethinking their investment thesis in the name. However, there are a couple of key takeaways from its Q2 earnings report, that nobody seems to be paying attention.</p><p>For starters, the slowdown in its government revenue was expected. There were preliminary signs of its impending government revenue slowdown, about which I warned my readers in an earnings preview article published back in April (Read - Palantir: Brace For Impact). The company reported $241.8 million in government revenue in Q1 which is eerily close to my forecast of $243.4 million. From my prior article:</p><blockquote>I expect Palantir&#39;s government revenue to grow marginally on a sequential basis this time around. See, Palantir hasn&#39;t won any major contracts from the federal government during Q1 -- its new orders have actually shrunk in the said time frame. The company, also, hasn&#39;t announced any major order wins that would trump this decline. This suggests that Palantir&#39;s government segment will be revenue challenged in Q1.</blockquote><p>Having said that, Palantir&#39;s commercial segment performed rather well. Its revenue amounted to $204.5 million, which was up 136% year over year and up 5.2% sequentially. Contrary to what the bears may suggest, I believe this segment will become the leading growth catalyst for Palantir in coming quarters.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3db8ff900a490ad54ab870a3dbc14a69\" tg-width=\"841\" tg-height=\"698\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>BusinessQuant.com</span></p><p>I say this because Palantir has been adding commercial customers at a rapid rate. It added 37 new commercial customers during Q1, which expanded its customer base by as much as 25% within a span of just one quarter. Bear in mind that Palantir&#39;s commercial revenue grew at just 5.2% over the said time frame. It&#39;s this disparity in revenue and customer growth rates, that offers a growth opportunity for investors.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ecf49e8573de71e8733ff481c7b73761\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"423\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>BusinessQuant.com</span></p><p>We must understand that these new customers won&#39;t outrightly replace their existing systems in place. They&#39;d naturally want to test out Palantir&#39;s platform in the beginning, explore its functionality, understand its integrations with their prevalent data set and train their personnel along the way. It&#39;s only after a few quarters of extensive use, that commercial enterprises would want to ramp spending on the new workflow that Palantir&#39;s platforms bring along.</p><p>Secondly, as more and more commercial enterprises start to use Palantir&#39;s platforms in their workflows and develop trust on the brand, the word of mouth will spread and Palantir is likely to win more customers along the way. In essence, I expect the successful commercial deployments to have a snowball effect for Palantir, at least in terms of customer wins.</p><p>Third, unlike the government sector where there&#39;s a limited number of agencies, lots of bureaucratic hurdles and geopolitics at play, the commercial sector is fragmented and usually doesn&#39;t involve such limitations. This essentially means that Palantir can continue expanding its customer base forward as well, without hitting a saturation point anytime soon. As a reminder, the company had just 184 commercial customers at the end of Q1.</p><p>So, overall, I consider Palantir&#39;s rapid commercial customer adds to be a leading indicator for an impending commercial revenue growth explosion in coming quarters.</p><p><b>Deflating Stock Compensation</b></p><p>Next, Palantir has been infamous for its high stock-based compensation in prior quarters. Concerned investors, bears and bag holders saw this as management&#39;s way to reward themselves for poor performance. However, the company has, once again, made steady progress on this front.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1be9a525cf8b91905c59b4294f66e355\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"359\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>BusinessQuant.com</span></p><p>Palantir&#39;s stock-based compensation expenses declined to $149.3 million during Q1, hovering close to its all-time low. Also, note in the chart above that the figure has steadily declined over the past year and a half. But that&#39;s not all. Per our database at Business Quant, Palantir&#39;s stock compensation expenses are more or less in line with many other rapidly growing software infrastructure stocks.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bfb60b913c4f6ac175eeb9de5efc36fe\" tg-width=\"424\" tg-height=\"724\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>BusinessQuant.com</span></p><p>As Palantir&#39;s shares are down 60% over the past year, employee compensation in the form of stock options will become less lucrative. Its employees will suddenly feel that their pay packages are inadequate. So, to address this issue and to retain key talent, I believe Palantir will significantly cut down on its stock awards and its dilutive effects, and resort to cash-based compensation at least until its shares remain distressed.</p><p>So, this is another area where Palantir has shown steady improvement and it&#39;s likely to continue doing so in the foreseeable future as well.</p><p><b>Final Thoughts</b></p><p>Palantir&#39;s price action has caught many off guard, including yours truly, but the stock seems to be attractively valued after its recent crash. It&#39;s trading at 10-times its trailing twelve-month sales, which is considerably lower than many of the other rapidly growing software infrastructure stocks.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4dba7ec35cbb3ccc0d08d25b05b40cb7\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"346\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>BusinessQuant.com</span></p><p>Besides, green shoots are starting to appear in Palantir&#39;s growth story, with its declining stock compensation expenses, rapid customer adds and a potential sales acceleration. In essence, I expect the successful commercial deployments to have a snowball effect for Palantir, at least in terms of customer wins.Third, unlike the government sector where there's a limited number of agencies, lots of bureaucratic hurdles and geopolitics at play, the commercial sector is fragmented and usually doesn't involve such limitations. This essentially means that Palantir can continue expanding its customer base forward as well, without hitting a saturation point anytime soon. Concerned investors, bears and bag holders saw this as management's way to reward themselves for poor performance. However, those headwinds are temporary, and the long-term investment thesis is still intact.</p><p>Roku is the top streaming platform in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico in terms of engagement, and engagement is a critical metric for marketers. As a result, Roku captured nearly 45% of programmatic connected TV (CTV) ad spending in North America in June 2022, while second-place <b>Samsung </b>and third-place <b>Amazon</b> held just 17% and 12% market share, respectively.</p><p>Roku is working to strengthen that sizable lead with The Roku Channel, an ad-supported streaming service that features free movies, TV shows, and live linear channels dedicated to news and sports. Roku began adding original content to the mix last year, and the reception has been quite positive so far. That, in turn, should enhance its ability to license and create high-quality content for The Roku Channel, which should result in greater viewer engagement, bringing more ad dollars to its platform.</p><p>Building on that, CTV ad spend is poised for dramatic growth, both because viewers are moving away from traditional TV and because CTV ads can be targeted more effectively. In fact, CTV ad spend in the U.S. alone could reach $100 billion by 2030, up from $21 billion in 2021, according to BMO Capital Markets.</p><p>With that in mind, if Roku can deliver revenue growth of 20% per year over the next decade, its market cap could increase sixfold by 2032 (assuming a reasonable price-to-sale ratio of 2.9). That&#39;s why investors should consider buying this growth stock today.</p><h2>MercadoLibre: The e-commerce leader in Latin America</h2><p>MercadoLibre is the largest e-commerce marketplace in Latin America, and it ranks as the market leader in each of the major countries in which it operates. It has reinforced that edge with value-added services like logistics, financing, digital advertising, and digital payments. That makes MercadoLibre a one-stop shop for merchants.</p><p>Its logistics business (Mercado Envíos) and its fintech business (Mercado Pago) have been particularly instrumental in its success. Mercado Envíos handled 91% of shipping volume in the most recent quarter, and nearly 80% of that volume was delivered within 48 hours. That makes for a great consumer experience, and merchants wouldn&#39;t be able to achieve that on their own.</p><p>Additionally, Mercado Pago supports digital payments both on and off the MercadoLibre marketplace, a particularly important role given that many Latin Americans lack access to a bank account and debit card. The vast majority of its revenue comes from Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico, and all three countries rank among the 10 fastest-growing e-commerce markets in the world. More broadly, Latin America itself has one of the fastest-growing internet penetration rates in the world, and that should drive adoption of online shopping and digital payments in the years ahead.</p><p>According to Statista, e-commerce sales across all countries in which MercadoLibre operates will grow at 18% per year to reach $260 billion by 2025, and digital payments volume will grow at 15% per year to reach $510 billion by 2027. That leaves plenty of room for growth.</p><p>On that note, if MercadoLibre can grow revenue at 25% per year over the next decade, its market cap could easily increase sixfold (assuming a reasonable price-to-sales ratio of 3.1) in that time.
