They were some of the theater chain’s best results in recent memory. AMC stock gained more than 10%on the news.

“AMC’s 2021 results improved significantly as the year progressed, and we finished the year with the strongest quarter in two years,” AMC CEO Adam Aron stated in the company’s news release.

“The fourth quarter of 2021 marks a meaningful milestone with positive EBITDA of more than $145 million, positive Operating Cash Generated of more than $215 million, and a record year-ending liquidity position of $1.8 billion.”

Although it appears AMC has made strides in the right direction, the final part of Aron’s comments about liquidity stick in my craw.

Here’s why.

AMC Stock Gets Temporary Relief

While AMC stock gained more than 10% on the news, its share price has been trending down for some time. Over the past six months, it’s lost 58% of its value. As a result, it now trades just $3 above its share price in May 2021, when the gravy train began for AMC’s CEO.

Of course, Aron will be confident of the company’s progress. Selling the AMC story has made him a wealthy man. Aron sold more than $40 million in stock in the last three months. As I’ve said in the past, it’s a nice retirement gift from retail investors.

But if you think about it, all the CEO has accomplished over the past two years is keep AMC from going bankrupt. He hasn’t developed a way forward that diversifies its revenue streams.

As for liquidity, AMC finished the fourth quarter with $1.8 billion in liquidity, comprised of $1.59 billion in cash and cash equivalents, along with $209.1 million left on its$225 million credit facility.

That’s temporary relief, in my opinion.

AMC Lowers Its Interest Expense

On Feb. 2, it announced that it was selling$500 million in first lien senior secured notes due 2029. While the press release doesn’t mention interest rates, presumably it will be less than 10.5%, the rate it pays for similar notes due 2025. AMC plans to use the proceeds plus cash to redeem its 2025 notes.

I’m not going to argue with the move. It extends out $500 million of its long-term debt by four years while reducing its annual interest expense.

However, AMC’s biggest problem is too much debt and negligible profits.

At the end of September, AMC had $5.49 billion in long-term obligations at interest rates between 2.95% and 17%. In the fourth quarter, it paid $97.1 million in interest on this debt. On an annualized basis, that’s an average interest rate of 7.1% [$388.4 million divided by $5.49 billion].

Assuming it can lower its interest rate on the $500 million from 10.5% to 6.5%, that would reduce the average interest rate to 6.7% [$500 million multiplied by 10.5% less $500 million multiplied by 6.5% equals $368 million in interest on an annualized based multiplied by $5.49 billion].

Even if it used 100% of its cash to pay down its long-term debt, it would still have annual interest payments of $261 million [$4.59 billion less $1.59 billion in cash multiplied by 6.7%].

The Bottom Line

At the height of AMC’s business success in 2018, as judged by revenues ($5.46 billion) and operating profits ($265 million), the company’s annual interest payments were $262.3 million, leaving $123.7 million in pre-tax profits, or 2.3%.

That’s as good as it gets.

Even with the reduction in interest costs through the redemption of the 10.5% notes, its interest costs remain 40% higher than in 2018, its proverbial heyday.

With interest rates headed higher and AMC delivering no plan for growth other than post-pandemic re-openings, I don’t see what will move AMC stock higher other than irrational exuberance.

Do not buy into Aron’s liquidity game. They were some of the theater chain’s best results in recent memory. AMC stock gained more than 10%on the news.“AMC’s 2021 results improved significantly as the year progressed, and we finished the year with the strongest quarter in two years,” AMC CEO Adam Aron stated in the company’s news release.“The fourth quarter of 2021 marks a meaningful milestone with positive EBITDA of more than $145 million, positive Operating Cash Generated of more than $215 million, and a record year-ending liquidity position of $1.8 billion.”Although it appears AMC has made strides in the right direction, the final part of Aron’s comments about liquidity stick in my craw. Here’s why.AMC Stock Gets Temporary ReliefWhile AMC stock gained more than 10% on the news, its share price has been trending down for some time. Over the past six months, it’s lost 58% of its value. As a result, it now trades just $3 above its share price in May 2021, when the gravy train began for AMC’s CEO.Of course, Aron will be confident of the company’s progress. That’s temporary relief, in my opinion.AMC Lowers Its Interest ExpenseOn Feb. 2, it announced that it was selling$500 million in first lien senior secured notes due 2029. While the press release doesn’t mention interest rates, presumably it will be less than 10.5%, the rate it pays for similar notes due 2025. AMC plans to use the proceeds plus cash to redeem its 2025 notes.I’m not going to argue with the move. On an annualized basis, that’s an average interest rate of 7.1% [$388.4 million divided by $5.49 billion].Assuming it can lower its interest rate on the $500 million from 10.5% to 6.5%, that would reduce the average interest rate to 6.7% [$500 million multiplied by 10.5% less $500 million multiplied by 6.5% equals $368 million in interest on an annualized based multiplied by $5.49 billion].Even if it used 100% of its cash to pay down its long-term debt, it would still have annual interest payments of $261 million [$4.59 billion less $1.59 billion in cash multiplied by 6.7%].The Bottom LineAt the height of AMC’s business success in 2018, as judged by revenues ($5.46 billion) and operating profits ($265 million), the company’s annual interest payments were $262.3 million, leaving $123.7 million in pre-tax profits, or 2.3%.That’s as good as it gets.Even with the reduction in interest costs through the redemption of the 10.5% notes, its interest costs remain 40% higher than in 2018, its proverbial heyday. With interest rates headed higher and AMC delivering no plan for growth other than post-pandemic re-openings, I don’t see what will move AMC stock higher other than irrational exuberance.Do not buy into Aron’s liquidity game. It’s one you will lose, and he’ll ride off into the sunset with $40 million in his pockets.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":566,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9091256849,"gmtCreate":1643881689292,"gmtModify":1676533867463,"author":{"id":"4104573873141100","authorId":"4104573873141100","name":"WXRaisin","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4104573873141100","authorIdStr":"4104573873141100"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Should i trust this article?!?!? Yet, NIO sto","content":"

Chinese automaker Nio(NYSE:NIO) has several strengths, including its innovative battery-exchange program, significant sales growth and its pending expansion into multiple overseas markets. Yet, NIO stock is down 50% in the past year.

Maybe that’s because in the past several months, the company’s sales growth and financial results haven’t been all that impressive. Or perhaps it’s because the electric vehicle maker faces extremely tough competition from the likes of Xpeng(NYSE:XPEV),Li Auto(NASDAQ:LI) and Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA). Nio also seems to be significantly behind a number of its rivals when it comes to autonomous driving.

High Prices and Tough Competition

One thing that could hinder Nio going forward is the relatively high prices of its vehicles. The base prices for Nio’s EV lineup ranges from about $50,000 to roughly $70,000. Add in extras and customization and they can run upward of $80,000.

NIO’s latest model, the ET7, will cost customers about$68,710 and $77,640depending on what battery pack they pick. And that’s after factoring in EV subsidies from the Chinese government.

For comparison, Xpeng’s after-subsidy base prices range from $23,000 to $36,000, while Tesla’s cheapest Model 3starts at around $40,000.

Nio also faces a great deal of competition at the higher end of the EV market from some famous and well-regarded brands including BMW(OTC:BMWYY), Audi, Lincoln and Mercedes.

In China, where incomes are generally lower than in the U.S. and Western Europe, less expensive EVs have a much better chance of becoming bestsellers than their more costly peers. In the end, selling millions of EVs with, say, a 20% gross margin will prove more profitable than selling a few hundred thousand vehicles with, say, a 40% gross margin.

Nio Appears To Be Falling Behind in Autonomous Driving

It seems that Nio is well behind Xpeng and Tesla when it comes to autonomous driving. Last month, Barron’s reported: “NIO Autonomous Driving or NAD, as the company calls it, will maintain driving speeds and do some steering, but drivers still need to pay attention to the road at all times.” Doesn’t sound all that “autonomous” to me.

Meanwhile, in October, Xpeng released its Xpilot 3.5 version of its advanced driver-assistance system. “The system allows Xpeng’s cars to change lanes, speed up or slow down, or overtake cars and enter and exit highways,” according to CNBC.

And in November, Tesla started offering its Enhanced Autopilot system in China to some customers. According to Inside EVs, among the features offered by Tesla’s system are “Summon, Autopark, Auto Lane Change, and, most importantly, Navigate on Autopilot.”

You don’t have to be an expert on autonomous vehicles to see that Nio is trailing Xpeng and Tesla in this area by a significant margin.

Disappointing Sales Growth and Financial Results

For December, Nio reported that its deliveries had increased nearly 50%year over year to 10,489 EVs. That’s not terrible, but it was lower than the prior month’s 10,878 deliveries and a marked slowdown from November’s year-over-year growth of 106%.

It also paled in comparison to its competitors’ December growth. XPeng delivered 16,000 vehicles in December, up 181% from a year ago and 2.5% from November. And Li Auto saw its deliveries hit 14,087 in December, up 4.5% over November and 130% year over year.

Nio is expected to report fourth-quarter earnings next month. Management’s most recent guidance, released in November, of $1.46 billion to $1.56 billion fell short of analysts’ estimates of $1.75 billion. The consensus has since lowered its forecast, predicting Nio will earn $1.53 billion. That represents year-over-year growth of 49.5%, while full-year revenue is expected to increase 120% to $5.62 billion.

If the company fails to meet or beat these numbers, NIO stock could sell off sharply.

The Bottom Line on Nio Stock

Nio faces tough competition in the Chinese EV market and appears to be falling behind its competitors in terms of growth. Yet, NIO stock is down 50% in the past year.Maybe that’s because in the past several months, the company’s sales growth and financial results haven’t been all that impressive. Or perhaps it’s because the electric vehicle maker faces extremely tough competition from the likes of Xpeng(NYSE:XPEV),Li Auto(NASDAQ:LI) and Tesla(NASDAQ:TSLA). Nio also seems to be significantly behind a number of its rivals when it comes to autonomous driving.High Prices and Tough CompetitionOne thing that could hinder Nio going forward is the relatively high prices of its vehicles. The base prices for Nio’s EV lineup ranges from about $50,000 to roughly $70,000. Add in extras and customization and they can run upward of $80,000.NIO’s latest model, the ET7, will cost customers about$68,710 and $77,640depending on what battery pack they pick. And that’s after factoring in EV subsidies from the Chinese government. For comparison, Xpeng’s after-subsidy base prices range from $23,000 to $36,000, while Tesla’s cheapest Model 3starts at around $40,000.Nio also faces a great deal of competition at the higher end of the EV market from some famous and well-regarded brands including BMW(OTC:BMWYY), Audi, Lincoln and Mercedes. In China, where incomes are generally lower than in the U.S. and Western Europe, less expensive EVs have a much better chance of becoming bestsellers than their more costly peers. In the end, selling millions of EVs with, say, a 20% gross margin will prove more profitable than selling a few hundred thousand vehicles with, say, a 40% gross margin.Nio Appears To Be Falling Behind in Autonomous DrivingIt seems that Nio is well behind Xpeng and Tesla when it comes to autonomous driving. Last month, Barron’s reported: “NIO Autonomous Driving or NAD, as the company calls it, will maintain driving speeds and do some steering, but drivers still need to pay attention to the road at all times.” Doesn’t sound all that “autonomous” to me.Meanwhile, in October, Xpeng released its Xpilot 3.5 version of its advanced driver-assistance system. “The system allows Xpeng’s cars to change lanes, speed up or slow down, or overtake cars and enter and exit highways,” according to CNBC.And in November, Tesla started offering its Enhanced Autopilot system in China to some customers. According to Inside EVs, among the features offered by Tesla’s system are “Summon, Autopark, Auto Lane Change, and, most importantly, Navigate on Autopilot.”You don’t have to be an expert on autonomous vehicles to see that Nio is trailing Xpeng and Tesla in this area by a significant margin.Disappointing Sales Growth and Financial ResultsFor December, Nio reported that its deliveries had increased nearly 50%year over year to 10,489 EVs. That’s not terrible, but it was lower than the prior month’s 10,878 deliveries and a marked slowdown from November’s year-over-year growth of 106%.It also paled in comparison to its competitors’ December growth. XPeng delivered 16,000 vehicles in December, up 181% from a year ago and 2.5% from November. And Li Auto saw its deliveries hit 14,087 in December, up 4.5% over November and 130% year over year.Nio is expected to report fourth-quarter earnings next month. The Bottom Line on Nio StockNio faces tough competition in the Chinese EV market and appears to be falling behind its competitors in terms of growth. The high price of Nio’s vehicles compared with some of its rivals’ and its relatively slow progress when it comes to self-driving technologies could cost the company its edge.Shares are currently trading for five times analysts’ average 2022 revenue estimate, which could prove to be overly optimistic. NIO stock isn’t expensive for an EV name, but it isn’t cheap either. And that valuation appears to bake in a meaningful amount of sales growth for the automaker, both at home and overseas.I recommend investors avoid NIO stock at this point.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":543,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3581978054709801","authorId":"3581978054709801","name":"Nickystonks","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9ea10f153b0e264f05c7d19fcc08cdee","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"idStr":"3581978054709801","authorIdStr":"3581978054709801"},"content":"they are a good company. just that it is a Chinese stock. tough","text":"they are a good company. just that it is a Chinese stock. tough","html":"they are a good company. just that it is a Chinese stock. tough"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":9004072663,"gmtCreate":1642465470924,"gmtModify":1676533712714,"author":{"id":"4104573873141100","authorId":"4104573873141100","name":"WXRaisin","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4104573873141100","authorIdStr":"4104573873141100"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"I like netflix bt with competition. But finding the right investment, the ‘one’ that will bring profits, no matter what direction the overall markets take, can sometimes be challenging. The two simplest courses of action an investor can take to ensure solid returns are based on common sense. The first is, to buy low and sell high. That is, find a cheap stock with sound fundamentals and good prospects for growth – and buy in to take advantage of the growth potential. The second common sense move is to buy stocks that will pay you back. That is, buy into dividend stocks.Today we’re going to look at two stocks that offer investors the best from both of those routes toward market success. According to TipRanks' database, these are Strong Buys, with a dividend yield up to 7% and substantial upside potential. And all that for a cost of entry below $5.National CineMedia (NCMI)The first stock we'll look at lives in a fascinating niche, one that most of us almost certainly never think about. National CineMedia is in the advertising business, creating, producing, and distributing ads that run before the movies in the theater start. The company benefits from having something of a captive audience, one already cued to watch what’s on the screen.Unsurprisingly, NCMI shares plummeted back in February of 2020, when the corona pandemic forced closures of the movie theater chains. And equally unsurprisingly, the stock has not regained its pre-corona price levels. In the most recent quarter reported, for 3Q21, NCMI showed $31.7 million at the top line. While well short of pre-pandemic levels (which regularly exceeded $100 million), and while it missed the Street’s estimates by approximately 25%, it was still up a whopping 428% year-over-year. Also, it was the second quarter in a row of increasing revenues, and even after a year or more of pandemic-related headwinds, NCMI still has $64.4 million in cash assets available. Those cash assets are helping to fund the company’s dividend, which it has been careful to continue to paying out during the corona crisis. While National CineMedia has been forced to lower the payment, it has been able to maintain the dividend for the past two years without missing a quarterly payment. The most recent dividend, paid in December, was set at 5 cents per common share, or 20 cents annualized, which gives a yield of 7.3%. This compares favorably to the average yield found among peer stocks, which is currently about 2%.In coverage of this stock for B. Riley Securities, 5-star analyst Eric Wold writes: “We remain positive on the opportunity for the 'lights down' strategy to differentiate NCMI's offering vs. the emerging AVOD networks—given that NCMI's platform can offer a larger and more captive audience of key demographics. While we are modeling NCMI's advertising revenues throughout 2022/2023 to, more or less, mirror box office and attendance patterns, we would expect to see some positive separation in the coming quarters as NCMI benefits from stronger inventory utilization and higher CPMs…”Wold also turns to the company’s liquidity situation, adding, “Not only did NCMI have enough liquidity to push through year-end and into January (with LLC cash + additional revolver capacity + the Inc. loan), the company will start to benefit from incoming cash flow on the stronger 4Q21 seasonality and monetization of the upfront advertising commitments.”Based on these comments, Wold gives NCMI stock a Buy rating, and his $6 price target suggests it has ~119% room to run this year. (To watch Wold’s track record, click here)Wall Street seems to share Wold's view here, as the stock has 4 positive reviews to back its Strong Buy consensus rating. The shares are priced at $2.74 and have an average price target of $5.38, suggesting ~96% gains for 2022. (See NMCI stock forecast on TipRanks)loanDepot, Inc. (LDI)Next up is loanDepot, an originate-to-sell lending platform focused on residential mortgage products, with a multi-channel go-to-market strategy that uses both a direct branded presence as well as varied partnerships.loanDepot is relatively new to the public markets, as it only held its IPO in February of last year. The company, however, has been buffeted by problems since its IPO. First, the company operates in a highly competitive niche, nonbank retail mortgage lending; second, loanDepot has been forced to face several lawsuits in the last few months, involving allegations of business fraud and employee discrimination. All of this has put heavy headwinds in the way of the company. The company has strengths, however, allowing it to meet the challenges. To start with, the company’s most recent fiscal report, for 3Q21, showed the ninth quarter in a row of year-over-year market share growth, as its share grew 46% to 3.5%. Furthermore, the company reported $923.8 million at the top line. While this was down from $1.36 billion in the year-ago quarter, it was up a solid 18% from Q2. EPS did even better, growing from 7 cents in Q2 to 40 cents in Q3. loanDepot reported having $506 million in cash at the end of Q3, a value that has grown steadily since the end of December 2020.The revenues and earnings, and the solid cash holding, all combined to give the company confidence to keep up the dividend. LDI’s most recent declaration was 8 cents per share, its third in a row at that level. With an annualized payment of 32 cents per common share, the company gives a dividend yield of 6.5%.Kevin Barker, 5-star analyst from Piper Sandler, takes a bullish stand on LDI, writing: “In our view, LDI appears better positioned to weather the current rate cycle, which should allow the company to remain reasonably profitable despite heavy competition. This should lead to downside protection via incremental book value growth while an unexpected turn in the market (i.e. rates move lower) could lead to a significant jump higher in the stock.”Barker takes this upbeat stance despite the pending lawsuits. He does not avoid that headwind, but he does not see it as decisive at this time. Barker writes of the suits, “We cannot ignore these allegations and we do not know if they have merit. However, we believe the potential outcome of this lawsuit and a potential regulatory action would have a limited impact.\"Overall, LDI gets an Overweight (i.e. Buy) rating from Barker, and an $8 price target that implies an upside of 63% in the next 12 months. (To watch Barker’s track record, click here)Wall Street appears to be in broad agreement with Barker, as LDI shares maintain a Strong Buy rating from the analyst consensus. There have been 8 recent reviews, including 6 Buys and 2 Holds. Meanwhile, the stock’s $10.19 average price target implies ~108% upside potential from the $4.90 trading price.
